12/05/2007: L.T. from Wilkesboro, NC writes: "Please advise when to use coconut oil for hair conditioner. Before shampooing, after while still wet, after dry? BTW, best moisturizer (face and body) ever used.

Also great for oil pulling (added 2-3 drops peppermint, tea tree or Idaho Balsam Fir essential oil) and taking internally. Day 3 and so far fantastic results."

[YEA]  09/03/2007: Danielle from Atlanta, Georgia writes: "I am a black woman with fine hair. I have never been able to have the shiny beautiful hair I wanted so I wore weaves and braids for many years because my "real" hair was sooo hard to take care of and it always seemed to break off. recently I took my weave out, and I was worried because my hair is down my back and I thought it would break off, but I discovered VCO and have been using it, my hair that was once dull is now shiny, it doesn't tangle, it doesn't come out in huge amounts when I comb it like it did before, and the ends look wonderful. I don't have to use any of the expensive products for my hair anymore. I only need the shampoos. It works great and even protects your hair from heat of blowdrying and flat ironing. I will use this for the rest of my life and I am going to start using it on my body and eventually eating it to see what it does for my entire body. It smells good, and it is really lightweight on your hair. I love it!!!! You will too."

[YEA]  07/04/2007: Jill from MH, USA writes: "I have been also been heating up virgin coconut oil and putting it in my hair as a hot oil treatment. It washes out easily. Leaves my hair shiny and I don't use expensive hair products anymore. Since doing this my hair has stopped coming out in huge amounts anymore. I have a low thyroid and have suffered hair loss. But now my hair is coming back thicker and Im not losing it anymore at a high rate. Plus its cured me of a dry itchy flaky scalp also."

[YEA]  02/01/2006: Cynthia from Los Angeles, CA writes: "I bought coconut oil originally for my hair, which makes the hair very shiny and silky. I used the end of a paint brush to apply it, worked it through, and left it on overnight with a wrap over it. Wash thoroughly the next morning, but do not use conditioner or any other additive, you won't need to for a few days, hair looks and feels great. I couldn't figure out how to "eat" it, which didn't seem desireable, but I added it to tea (black currant) and it was quite good, not very greasy, goes down very nicely!"

[YEA]  Shana from Caddo Mills, TX writes: "I used Coconut oil as a hair conditioner to treat dry damaged hair. I use all natural hair care products from a wellness company I work for and the shampoo really dries my hair out pretty bad and the conditioner doesn't work at all, so I needed a natural hair conditioner and this worked awesome."

DISHWASHING LIQUID FOR HAIR GROWTH IN TODDLER

1 YEA

[YEA]  12/13/2007: Candy from Riverdale, New York writes: "I am a big fan of Earth Clinic and I not only use it to my benefit, but I also recommend remedies to friends and loved ones. My cousins lamented that her 2 yr. old daughter's hair was not growing as fast as it ought to. So, low and behold, I looked for a remedy which would suit a 2yr old. My cousin started using Original Dawn dishwashing liquid and saw immediate results. It's been over 2 months and there hasn't been any negative side effects. My sister cut her hair early this year and she expect that it would grow back quickly, but to her surprise, no. I spoke about the results my cousin noticed with her daughter and my sister decided to try Dawn. Well, it has been almost 2 weeks since she started and guess what, her hair is growing at an unexpectedly speedy rate."

01/03/2009: Laurie from Sudbury, Ontario replies: "HI about the diswashing liquid, I was wondering if anyone had experience with their own hair (adults). IF so how did it work on grown ups? Would it make an adults hair grow also? Thanks."

[YEA]  05/27/2005: Darwin from Chennai, India writes: "You can condition and nourish your hair through fenugreek seeds. Soak fenugreek seeds in water for about 1 hour and grind it to paste. Apply all over the head and leave it for 30 minutes and wash it with cold water, woww beautiful and glowing hair..."

HONEY

1 YEA

[YEA]  10/22/2006: Sandra writes: "Honey as a styling product: Frizzy or hard to manage hair? Try mixing 1/4 tsp of honey with a tsp of your styling product and dilute with about a tbs of warm water and comb through towel dried hair. I have long hair so ppl with short hair should use less. Style normally. The honey acts like a hair mousse and holds hair style all day, plus I found my hair had extra volume from the roots, which lasted until the next time day-- even after waking up (my hair is really heavey so it always went flat after 5 minutes of applying hair spray). Best styling product I have ever used its actually conditions your hair as you use it and smells great. Just becareful not to put too much honey in your hair other wise it'll go stiff."

JOJOBA OIL

1 YEA

[YEA]  11/28/2006: Maureen from Carrollton, GA writes: "After menopause my perfect hair became a nightmare. It is dry and stands straight up like something from a cartoon. I have tried many things - all of them natural - but the only success I have had is with straight jojoba oil. It takes very little and I occasionally put some on my dry hair if it needs a "touchup". It is cheap because you use so little at a time. I love it. The cure is cosmetic. If I go a few times without it, I am pretty much back where i began, however, rather than look like I just took my hand out of a socket, I'll settle until I can do better. (Yes, I do know about EFAs.)"

MAYONNAISE

1 YEA

[YEA]  08/04/2009: Molly from Austin, Tx writes: "I have very long, thick and dry and damaged hair. And until now the only way I could get my hair the least bit soft was with lots of Apple Cider Vinegar. However yesterday I covered my hair (dry) with lots of mayonnaise and kept it in there for about 15 minutes then washed it twice (to get the smell out) and conditioned as normal. It SERISOUSLY like I have a new head of hair, its so bouncy and soft and shiney, but not in a greasy way, I HIGHLY recommend this, especially to people like me that spent their teenages years dying their hair constantly!"

NETTLE TEA

1 SIDE EFFECT

[SIDE EFFECTS]  01/09/2009: Laurie from Sudbury, Ontario writes: "Hi, I was wondering if anyone knew of taking or using nettle tea for hair.

Long ago I went into the health food store and was told nettle tea in rinse water helped your hair thicken. I just used it a couple of times and hated it as it was like tea all over the shower and you and stuck in the hair and had to be rinsed well. It was a pain. Now I bought nettle tea again and was wondering if anyone at all has any stories about it.

Thanks."

[YEA]  01/09/2009: Rosy from Orlando, Fl replies: "Try a spay bottle, I used to use that with chamomile tea I put in my hair."

01/09/2009: Dianna from Austin, Tx replies: "i've used nettle tea on my hair. both as a hair 'wash' and as a last rinse.

personally, i like other herbs better (lavender is my favorite) - but try straining the herbs out of the tea before you pour it on your hair - or you can buy (or make) a little muslim bag to keep all the herbs together in while brewing. to use a strainer simply put the strainer over a plastic bottle and pour the tea with the nettles into it. then you can add water as needed to the rinse.

djh/austin, tx"

[NAY]  01/09/2009: Dorotka from Apopka, Florida replies: "For me the herb Fo-ti , or the other name is Ho-Shou-Wu ,worked much better then nettle tea."

OLIVE OIL FOR SPLIT ENDS

[YEA]  10/24/2006: Melissa from Omaha, NE writes: "I have a tip for dry split ends. After shampooing and conditioning, use a dime size amount (more for long hair) of olive oil. Just put into hands, apply to hair but not the scalp b/c it will make it greasy and then comb through. It seals the split ends and makes hair soft. Bye Bye flyaways and money for expensive hair products."

PURE CRUDE OIL

1 YEA
1 QUESTION

[YEA]  03/09/2008: Brooke from Montgomery, TX writes: "I have been using Pure Crude Oil on my hair for 15 years now, followed by a vaseline rub. I put on the Oil and massage it into my scalp with a cupped massager, then I put on the vaseline and massage it with the cupped massager. It is an amazing conditioner and makes your hair grow quicker than usual. It stimulates growth when you don't have it also!! It is an amazing cure for all scalp issues!!"

[QUESTION]  01/11/2009: Laurie from Sudbury, Ontario replies: "Hi there, please tell me what crude oil is and can you use any other oils like olive or coconut oil instead? As i am trying to go out and buy everything mentioned on here, its getting awfully expensive. So many as the saying goes, get three things done with one thing.

Not exactly as the saying goes but you know what I mean. I would appreciate any feed back. Thank you."

EC: Pure crude oil is motor oil, so she must mean another type of oil unless this is a joke! Don't put motor oil in your hair!

05/17/2009: VALERY from ROSE HILL, KS replies: "I SAW THIS POST ABOUT CRUDE OIL FOR HAIR, AND EARTHCLINICS WARNING RESPONSE, SO I GO CURIOUS AND LOOKED IT UP

AND,

if you do a google search for "pure crude oil for hair"
----i got as one of the first results, a company selling that product: "pure crude oil for hair" and in the specifics about the product, they mentioned " Crudoleum " and after doing another google search for " Crudoleum for hair" i found several companies selling it and one site says this about their Crudoleum conditioner: "Ingredients include castor oil, olive oil, aloe vera, jojoba, lanolin, and a pleasant almond fragrance for a manageable shine"

also another site sells a "Crudoleum cream" that combines white petroleum jelly and crude oil"

so the "crude oil" these compaines, and i believe the woman behind this post is refering to the oil these companies are selling, not motor oil....obviously! but it is confusing and i wanted to clear up any confusion for other readers!!"

SILICON SUPPLEMENTS

Ted from Bangkok, Thailand writes: "Try taking some foods rich with silicon. Such as nuts, horsetails, oatmeal, etc. Or you can take some silicon supplements in the form of orthosilicic acid or silicic acid, which is a water soluble form of silicon. Taken vitamin C will help strengthen or thinken the epidermis. Taking some magnesium seems to helpful. Apple cider vinegar have some traces of silicon and will help. But you need to reduce your intake of vegetable oils (they seem to destroy the liver) and is seen not helpful to the circulation as liver once not functionally as efficiently will not provide nutrients throughout the body.

Takin silicon supplements 5-10 mg/day seems to cause thickening of nails and hair within weeks. (They also grow faster)

Taking some rutin rich foods, such as bee pollen will help develop capillaries, which hopefully will be helpful for the scalp also."

SOAP NUTS

1 YEA

[YEA]  03/14/2009: Dianna from Austin, Tx writes: "i just noticed that you don't have soapnuts listed on your site.

soap nuts are actually berries, you can use them for laundry (yay! no perfumes, dyes, soap, etc.) and they work great for this. i even get good results from using them in cold water. also if you make the liquid you can use it for many uses around the house: dishwashing, counters and surfaces, spot treatments of very dirty clothes before washing with the whole soap nuts, carpet cleaning AND hair washing!

also if you use the liquid for washing your pets - fleas don't like it!

it makes your hair very shiny and soft and thick.

if you are interested - google soapnuts - there is a LOT of info out there.

btw - the 'brand' i have is maggies - which is sold at my food co-op. although they may seem expensive upon first inspection - $17.99 for about 50 berries - you can re-use them in the laundry up to 5 times! and then 20 of them will make 32 ounces of cleaning liquid - and you can even do this 2 or 3 times if you save the berries after cooking them.

so a box could work for like 50 loads of laundry! and we wash in cold water - if you use hot or warm water it takes even less of the soapnuts.

this is a wonderful find for anyone who is allergic to conventional detergents. they even clean my boyfriend's very dirty and greasy car working on clothes!"

EC: Thanks, Dianna. We are going to cross-post this to the Earth Clinic Planet site as well!
