1 BETTER BUT NOT CURED
[YEA] 08/27/2010: Tasha from East Coast, Usa writes: "Apple Cider Vinegar is WONDERFUL for hair especially frizzy/curly hair. I mix 1/3 ACV or White Vinegar and 2/3 water in a bowl. First thing I do is dump this over my head. I let it sit while I wash up, rinse at the end and follow with a tad of conditioner. I have fine curly hair and its usually a hit or miss as far as how my hair day goes. I havent had a bad hair days since I started doing this. Hair is smooth, shiny, FULL and just plain gorgeous."
08/28/2010: Tricia from Ireland replies: "I do this too for scalp as much as hair. I use a spray bottle to get it into the scalp and then comb it through my hair. Less waste. I find it amazing that although I can normally only use a comb on my curls when I have conditioner in it, I can comb the ACV mix through without any bother at all."
08/28/2010: Francisca from Michelbach-le-bas, Alsace, France replies: "The spray bottle is a great idea as I always waste a lot because I don't know where I am throwing it. But do you do that as a rinse after washing your hair or with it dry?"
09/02/2010: Tricia from Ireland replies: "Hi Francisca, I enjoy your posts and reviews. I had awful problems with my hair after giving birth which I blamed on hormones. It took me two years and many hairdresser visits(I usually only go once every 2-3 years) to realize it was SLS. Curl fell out. Colour wouldn't stay and it felt like I had a wire brush rubbing on my scalp. So now I rarely shampoo my hair unless I'm going to get a colour put in. I use a protocol devised by Lorraine Massey called "no poo". I 'wash' my hair each day but only use a non-silicone conditioner - no shampoo. Google her. It's a great system. Once or twice a week, before breakfast I spray my dry hair and scalp with ACV/water - have brekkie and clean up - then shower and condition. Normally I only leave it on half an hour or so but a couple of times I realize at the school gates that I forgot to wash it out. Doesn't look good but it has never done any damage. The spray bottler is non waste and I'll use it for cleaning too. I spray it on my brass bathroom taps just for a min and then scrub with an old toothbrush to get rid of the green stuff that accumulates on them. And it gets rid of the soap residue my family are determined to leave in the sink. It's great stuff to have in the bathroom."
09/03/2010: Francisca from Michelbach-le-bas, Alsace, France replies: "Hi Tricia, many thanks for your kind words. Actually I have stopped posting the book reviews because I didn't think that there was much interest.... As far as the ACV goes I have just remembered that like you I also have a spry bottle with ACV and water which I use to clean mirrors and so, that will be handy for my hair too! I will surely Google Lorraine Massey. Normally speaking I don't need to wash my hair more than once a week and I have just read in a book of mine that you should only wash the scalp, not the rest. Nowadays we only use natural shampoos and I am starting to rinse it with beer and then water. It gives volume and the hair becomes very soft. I also brush it with my head upside down and then straight up at least twice a day, like someone suggested here a while ago and that has made my hair look fuller and thicker while keeping it a lot cleaner. I have must finished reading a little book with a lot of beauty tips, if there is interest I will post a review on this site (the problem is that I don't think you can find the reviews again)! Funny you say you keep the ACV in the bathroom, I keep the spray bottle with the diluted one but also a bottle with the normal stuff as I use it in my bath, to wash my fact, against yeast infections, everything and anything!"

12/20/2008: Laurie from Sudbury, Ontario writes: "Can anyone tell me if adding ACV to your final rinse is ok if u just had ur hair colored and highlighted, or if one should wait for a bit. Has anyone had experience with this, please let me know asap if possible as I just had my hair done. Thank you"
12/20/2008: Rosy from Orlando, Fl replies: "It should be ok to use right after coloring darker hair, but it might be too soon for light hair. You could try a chamomile tea rinse for your light hair."
12/24/2008: Laurie from Sudbury, Ontario replies: "Thank you for your response, I have dark hair naturally but have red and blonde highlights in it. First time I try this its sexy actually....anyways what do u think should I wait on the AVC rinse cause of the lighter highlites. I have tried ACv rinse very little already and seemed to be ok. Just asking opinions. Thanks again."
[YEA] 08/23/2009: Pauline from Sebring, Florida replies: "to Laurie from SudburyOntario- My hair was very fine and wouldn't even hold a hair clip it would drop out. This is what I did, massage the scap real good with olive oil then massage the olive oil into the hair all the way to the ends. you can leave it on for 30 minutes or a little longer the longer the better. Then shampoo and condition, then mix half Apple Cider Vinger and half water pour this through the hair and leave it in do not rinse, just wrap a towel around your head leave it on about 5 minutes then take the towel off and let your hair air dry. When the hair dries you won't smell the vinegar. The olive oil will make your hair grow and make it thick and the A/C/V will clean out any chemicals like hairspray, spray gel, hair mousse.
Now for the nails, I use olive oil but you have a choice to use olive oil, castor oil or petroleum jelly, all three are good for the nails. If you use olive oil or castor oil use a cotton ball and wet it good with the oil and rub it into the nails and cuticles real good. for the petroleum jelly use a small amount on nails and cuticles. Make sure you do this before going to bed. Use rubber gloves for cleaning bathrooms, dishes and gardening, water is not good for the nails. Remember nothing works overnight! It will take a few weeks for this to work. You will see a difference as the weeks go by. It sure did work good for me, I know it will work for you too. Good Luck!
Pauline"

[YEA] 09/16/2006: Lana from Hamilton, OH writes: "I started using to rinse my hair after washing and cream rinse. I have long hair from my crown about 31 inches. I use 1 cup of apple cider vinegar ever time I wash my hair, which is 3 times a week. The smell only stays for about 30 min, but my hair is so much healthier and has also grown. If I miss the vinegar rinse my hair feels flat and unclean. It also helps with the split ends. White vinegar is not to be used on your hair as it will strip the naturel oils"

[YEA] Barbara from Phoenix, Arizona writes: "I have been using vinegar once a week for years and years as a hair rinse. It gives my hair the perfect pH balance. As a result, at the ripe old age of 63, I have very thick, healthy, shiny hair. When I tell people about it, they think I am crazy, but it works!! I remember when I was very young, my mom would wash my hair in rain water and then rinse it with vinegar.
I use approximately 1/2 to 3/4 cup vinegar diluted with about 1/2 cup water. I shampoo and rinse first then pour on the vinegar - let it sit about a minute and then rinse out the vinegar and then shampoo again and rinse very well so there is no odor of vinegar. This was even recommended to me by a beautician once, and I hadn't even told her that I was already doing it!! The vinegar also removes all the old shampoo, conditioner, hair spray, etc. build-up in the hair."

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] Sharon from Los Angeles, CA writes: "The Apple Cider Vinegar as a conditioner was great! However, my hair smelled quite obviously of vinegar until the next time I washed it even though I rinsed it well with shampoo! I will try it again, but perhaps with less vinegar."

[YEA] Dora from Ottawa, Ontario writes: "The apple cider vinegar worked very well. The only things to be watchful for: is not getting it in your eyes (becomes irritated for a couple of seconds) and being mindful in the shower where it becomes slippery on the floor. The best way I believe to use the ACV is over a sink to wash your hair, not the shower."

[YEA] Sue from Kingston Area,Ontario writes: "After being guided to use apple cider vinegar to rid Candida.. I decided to cleanse my scalp of any yeast buildup. Wow...my hair is so curly, shinny and very healthy. I will use every second week as a cleanser. Try diluting 1/2 cup of ACV with 1/2 cup warm water-pour onto scalp, then shampoo & conditioner. I have even tried it on a cotton ball to exfolliate my skin--results were "glowing skin". Buy the "unpasturized"apple cider vinegar-it is live and therefore ACTIVE.Try it - IT does work."

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR AND BAKING SODA
[YEA] 06/04/2007: Ed from Wenatchee WA, USA writes: "I have been using a mixture of ACV, Baking Soda, and Water for a conditioner for about a week and a half. I use about 1/4 tablespoon of BS and ACV till the bubbling stops. then I add just enough water to complete filling a small cup About 3 inches high, 1/2 full. I apply just enough of this to soak my hair ( I do this in the shower ) and rub it in with my fingertips for about 1 minute, then I rinse it out. I have had mildly itchy scalp and hair that does not obey. Now I have no more tangles, my hair does what I want, and the itchy scalp is better. It's not gone yet, but is getting less itchy. Using this small amount of ACV does not leave any smell to my hair either. Thank you so much for this site. Ed"

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR, BAKING SODA, COCONUT OIL
[YEA] 10/15/2008: Nita from Valdosta, GA writes: "I have recently become Earthclinic's biggest fan, trying a couple of suggestions that were in others' testimonials. Last night I soaked my hair in undiluted ACV to wet it. Then I used baking soda to srub my scalp clean, next I put a warm egg on my hair(focusing on the ends). I worked the mixture in and let it sit for about 10 minutes. My hair was instantly smoother when I put the BS on but I decided to add the egg anyway. When I rinsed it out my hair was very easy to comb through and it still was silky to the touch. I followed it up by putting coconut oil on my hair while it was still wet and wrapping it. I tied it up and went to sleep. When I combed the wrap down this morning I found the softest, shiniest, hair I have ever had. I am African American with chemically altered hair so this remedy is like finding a pot of gold! I am so amazed by the results of the cheapest most common things. I will never have to waste my time and money on useless hair products again. I'm 23 now so I'm sure this will save me a lot of money over the years. I feel so blessed to have found this site and I hope these remedies touch many more lives."
01/04/2009: N.B.N from Charlotte, NC replies: "Thank you so much for sharing really i needed to hear this in this season of my life"
01/12/2009: Laurie from Sudbury, Ontario replies: "Hi , first of all you need to specify amounts as a few people are now mentioning the side effects. How much "undiluted ACV" do you use (as wouldnt that burn your scalp). Then how much BS and what do you mean by a "warm egg" you mean room tempature. Thank you"

1/2 Banana (mashed) and Olive Oil (enough oil to cover your hair) = for conditioning hair (maybe once a month or as needed).
Leave on for 30 minutes. Shampoo twice or more to remove oil."

BEEF BONES AND OLIVE OIL, CARROT JUICE
[YEA] 04/15/2008: Doris from Santa Ana, USA writes: "re: Lustrous thick healthy hair.. Through my younger years in professional career, many were spent car-pooling. The Spanish women I knew all had lustrous spectacularly thick raven hair. Then, marrying, my own Spanish-American Indian origin mother-in-law also did. She said 'well of course all natives of her vicinity, New Mexico and that nearby So Amer region, boiled their cattle's beef bones till the bones were softened, and the water was marrow filled. They'd add a bit spoon or two of home pressed olive oil and use it as a hair treatment, as we do in salons today. What a difference in my own hair in those years. Also, rubbing cold pressed carrot juice, for the vitamin A, fully restored a male friend's hair from total baldness. Took one year, with substantial overall body health occurring, freckles disappearing, muscle and skin tone restoring, then year 2, a baby fine regrowth of skull hair, then by year 3, totally restored youth-level full head of hair."

[YEA] 12/08/2008: Carla from Greenville, NC writes: "I became a fan of borax when my son was 2 years old and had the chicken pox. His doctor told me to put him in a bath with borax and it would help with his itching. It was wonderful. He would sleep for hours after his borax fix. I used about 1 cup of borax in a tub of water deep enough to cover him. Now, I am trying to cut back my water usage. To do that I put a few oz. of borax in the bottom of a dixie cup and fill it with water. I pour it over my hair and rinse. Instead of using a cream rinse, I use a leave in spray rinse from my hair dresser. It helps save my well water, and my hair has never been so beautiful and soft. TRY IT!!!"

[YEA] 12/03/2007: Rhonda from Seattle, WA writes: "I learned about borax on curezone for itchy painful scalp and decided to try it. Someone else on this site has mentioned how nice her hair is as a result of using the borax. I have NEVER used a hair product- a shampoo or a conditioner that has equalled the lustruous results I have achieved with borax. My hair was dry and straw like now it feels soft and silky and very manageable. The rats nest is gone! I can now comb and brush my hair again without fear of tearing my hair out. If for no other reason, I think everyone should abondon their shampoo and start using borax to wash the hair. As for my scalp? I was pretty desperate the day I tried the borax. My scalp was very sore, there was an inflamed (swollen) ridge on my part and there were tiny bumps like zits forming. I have a theory that hair pullers are reacting to whatever it is that causes these symptoms I experience. I started messing with my hair when I started experiencing all of the above. anyway. after using the borax, pain and itching subsided. bumps scabbed over that same day. soooo gentle. Have you noticed that if you get it in your eyes, it does not burn? I remember when I was a kid, I had some sort of eye infection so I went to the doc and he said I had pink eye and prescribed boric acid ointment. so of course it would be gentle to the eye. I am anxious to try it internally for some of the other issues I have read here on the site.(arthritis, tmj, fibromyalgia)."

[YEA] 08/12/2007: Jackie from Grand Rapids, Minn. writes: "Hi, i'm using many of Ted's wonderful remedies. The latest is borax for a shampoo. I was scared at first, thought my hair would be a matted, tangled, dried out mess. Well it works better than any shampoo i've tried, and my stick straight thin hair has new thickness and body. So much so, that i was able to get a chin length haircut with bangs which i didn't dare do before. I don't know if i'm right but i use 2 tbsp borax to 2 qts. warm water and pour it over my head about 3 times then massage my scalp then rinse. i almost forgot to mention i don't need a conditioner or detangling rinse. This makes me really happy because i'm trying to reduce or eliminate chemicals on my skin and body.I use borax water to dampen my hair before a hairset too. I have very light gray hair and i'm trying blackstrap molasses everyday to see if i can get some darker hair back. several people who don't know i'm doing this have said my hair looks darker gray, it definetly is darkening at the hairline on the sides and on the nckline after a short time, so i'm hopeful, but just to be able to have body and thickness to my hair is just thrilling no matter what color it is. Thanks so many times for all this information.jackie"

BORAX, BAKING SODA, APPLE CIDER VINEGAR
[YEA] 05/24/2008: L from South Portland, Maine writes: "I put two glass jars in my shower. One filled with a mix of borax and baking soda. (More borax for dry hair...more baking soda for greasy... half and half for normal.) I get in the shower and sprinkle approximately 2 tablespoons in the empty jar and fill it with water and shake it around. I then dump that over my head and rinse it out.
I keep a bottle of ACV in the shower as well and pour approximately 1/4 of cup into the now empty jar add water pour over my head and rinse. The drying process looks a little funky but my hair is clean, shiny, flake free and dare I say fabulous. I'm actually a little dismayed that I have spent so much money over the years on toxic products that didnt make my hair look half as good. I switched to white vinegar for a week once and my hair became much blonder. The ACV brings out more amber highlights. Good Luck"
07/02/2009: Traci from Atlanta, GA replies: "Sorry I've never done this so I have no measurements or ingredients but I thought it may be of interest to anyone looking for a natural way to color hair. I was shocked last weekend when my friend told me she was actually completely gray headed now as I looked at her blond/reddish hair. She said she uses henna but that the apple cider vinegar mixed with baking soda washes it out so she switched to using the vinegar alone and it's all good. Sorry those are the only details I have right now (I am presently unable to contact her), I just thought anybody could look into it if interested."

Add a dash of lemon juice and 15 drops of calendula (marigold) extract then pour onto scalp and let sit for 10 minutes and shampoo and condition as normal. I have done this 2x a week wince winter set in and it is perfect. No more flaking or redness."

2 QUESTIONS
[QUESTION] 01/16/2009: Leeloo from San Jose, CA, USA writes: "I too have damaged hair so I started making my own coconut oil; however, I'm not sure if the boiling process has the same benefits as the process without heating the coconut oil. So I'd like to know from the professionals if the boiling the coconut milk to get the coconut oil is still a good remedy for hair treatment. Does it have the same vitamins as the coconut oil that hasn't been exposed to boiling heat?
01/16/2009: Leelo writes again: "Sorry but I left out the part that I do not drink the coconut oil, I massage it on my hair and skin, so I was wondering if using the boiling process to get the coconut oil from coconut milk is a good process for hair treatment. Will it have the same vitamins as those that has been processed without heating? Will the coconut oil still be good to use for massaging onto scalp and moisturizing the skin even when it's been boiled?"
01/18/2009: Leeloo from San Jose, CA, USA replies: "I posted a question earlier, but it seems like everyone else's got answered except mine. I thought it was an overlook so, I'm re-posting my question. Hopefully, I'll get an answer from Ted.I'm very interested in your answer so Thanks in advance!"

[YEA] 07/17/2008: Molly from Austin, Tx writes: "I use cocunut oil for many ailments, however I just tried it this week as a mask for my very dry hair, I dyed, bleach, and ironed my hair for years, so its incredibly coarse and frizzy all the time, I've tried EVERYTHING available in stores and salons, with little to no results. So I scooped out a few handfuls of coconut oil (enough to cover all my hair) and I work it in really well (as if your coating all your hair with gel) then I put a shower cap on, and in about 20 minutes I showered as normal, and my hair in SO FREAKING SMOOTH, and shiny and soft, I still iron my hair, but this is the first time I never had to use some kind of smoothing gel, its amazing, I'm going to do it all the time now!!!"

I have used in on my hair before I wash it. My hair is so soft afterwards. It's great for dandruff. As for my cats I treated the ringworm topically and the rhino virus was treated orally. My cats seem to really like it. They get about a tsp orally. They like it liquid so I run it under hot water. My dogs get about 1 Tbs and they love it too. It has helped Yeast on the skin and allergies. I work as a groomer so I try it for several skin problems."
