For centuries, people have given the ol' apple cider vinegar drink a run for its money thanks to apple cider vinegar's widely known health benefits. Apple cider vinegar can aid in weight loss and also promote rosy, glowing skin when taken as a daily health tonic or applied to the skin.
How to Drink Apple Cider Vinegar
Earth Clinic knows a thing or two about how to drink apple cider vinegar. We've been experimenting with apple cider vinegar recipes since 1999!
ORIGINAL APPLE CIDER VINEGAR TONIC
1 teaspoon and up to 2 tablespoons unpasteurized apple cider vinegar
1 large glass of water (8-12 oz.)
1 tsp natural sweetener (optional)
This version of the tonic is mixed and ordinarily taken just before or along with meals, 1-3 times a day. When it comes to natural sweeteners, honey is probably ideal since it offers substantial health benefits of its own. Natural maple syrup likewise has many proponents, whereas refined sugar also offers sweetness but little if any other health benefit. Any natural sweetener, however, will do just fine. Alternatively, some prefer to forgo a separate sweetener and simply mix their Apple Cider Vinegar in with apple juice, apple cider, or another drink that blends well with the cider vinegar. The possibilities are endless, the point is just to get the stuff into your system and your dietary habits.
MODERN APPLE CIDER VINEGAR TONIC
2 teaspoons unpasteurized apple cider vinegar
16 ounces water
Mix together in a container and refrigerate, pouring yourself a glassful whenever you are thirsty. Ordinarily a couple of glasses a day will take care of your general health needs. This version is ideal for those who are particularly concerned about maintaining an alkalizing diet for overall health.
APPLE CIDER VINEGAR TONIC WITH BAKING SODA
1/8 teaspoon baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
1-2 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
8-16 oz water
Add an eighth of a teaspoon of baking soda to either of the standard Apple CIder Vinegar tonics found above. Be careful! When you initially combine the vinegar and baking soda, a natural reaction will cause it to fizz up somewhat dramatically. Once the reaction settles, you can drink this version of the tonic as above for an additional alkalizing boost.
Alkalizing with Apple Cider Vinegar
04/01/2009: Earth Clinic : "As you may know, Earth Clinic has recommended the standard 2 teaspoons in 8 oz of water 3x a day for years now. For more severe conditions, we recommended 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in 8 oz of water 3x a day. We now think that less vinegar, more water is an optimal way of taking apple cider vinegar daily unless you are treating an acute condition like acid reflux, cough, bronchitis, or sore throat (in which case the stronger concoction of 2 TBS apple cider vinegar (ACV) to 8 OZ of water 3x a day recipe is suggested).
For daily maintenance, weight loss and pH balancing, we now suggest the following:
2 teaspoons of organic apple cider vinegar
16 ounces of water
Sip, don't chug!
We suggest 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in 16 ounces of water that you'll sip throughout the day, rather than drinking the whole concoction at once 3 times a day. You will be keeping your pH in a constant, alkalized state by sipping this highly diluted dosage. Usually 1-2 tall glasses of the concoction are all you'll need each day.
If you drink a lot of water throughout the day, consider adding just a splash of apple cider vinegar to your glass/container each time you fill it up, rather than drinking the one, 16 oz glass of acv and water mentioned above."
04/15/2009: Kristen from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA replies: "I have a question. Why do you NOT recommend putting any sweetener in the apple cider vinegar (ACV)? I was taking 2 tablespoons in a bottle of water for my allergies for the last 2 days, and could barely get it down. While my allergies went away (amazing!), I do not think I can make myself drink this every single day without something to help the taste. Today I started with 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in 16 ounces of water, as you recommend, but I added a tablespoon of organic Grade B maple syrup, which helps a lot. Is there anything you DO recommend that helps the flavor, without detracting from the benefits? Thanks so much for this extremely helpful website."
EC: Just trying to avoid adding more sugar to one's diet! However, most readers on this site seem to add one kind of sweetener or another."
10/23/2013: Walter from Baltimore Maryland replies: "When taking apple cider for what ever ailment I have found mixing it with apple juice makes it much easier to take rather then mixing it with water."
Apple Cider Vinegar and Cherry Pomegranate
[YEA] 02/20/2012: Vikingirl from Knoxville, Tn: "This is the delicious way I add apple cider vinager to my daily routine. After a long walk with my dog, I pour half glass of cold water, half glass of cherry pomegranate juice, squirt of lemon and lime juice and 1 tsp yes 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar with lots of ice and it is so good, I don't taste or smell the acv. I also drink it with a straw. YUMMY!"
Apple Cider Vinegar and Pomegranate Tea
[YEA] 01/31/2011: Mykl from Vancouver, Wa: "One of the biggest contributors to digestive problems is that most people tend to swallow their food too soon, meaning, not chewing it enough/long enough. Chew more swallow less. That said, I've been using apple cider vinegar (ACV) for quite some time now and I suffered with very bad heartburn/acid reflux for years. Then I came across ACV therapy while researching H2o2 therapy. There's another therapy that will amaze you. H2o2 and ACV therapy make a good pair to draw too.
As for ACV and mixing it with something try about 6 oz of Pomegranate green tea and a table spoon of ACV. I personally use 2 about tablespoons. Mornings and late afternoons. When I first tried apple cider vinegar to combat my acid reflux (and don't let anyone tell you acid reflux is a disease, big pharma pushes this) I would take it straight. If this is new for you be ready to think you've made a mistake. Why? It will heat you up from your sinuses through your throat, esophagus into the belly. The vapors will make it feel like it's taking your breath away. Steel yourself and muscle through it, do not breath. Don't fret the heat you feel from it, it dissipates rapidly and you'll be amazed. This is my personal experience. I have had no acid reflux in 2 years. One slight case due to, guess what? "diet". I lost 25 lbs and I've kept it off for a year and a half now.
note: your liver/kidneys love apple cider vinegar. Every cell in your body loves H2o2. Research hydrogen peroxide. Food grade!"
Apple Cider Vinegar in Apple Juice
[YEA] 06/18/2012: Wacoastalgirl from Seattle, Washington: "Thanks for the apple cider vinegar recipe in apple juice. I was just trying to get back to drinking apple cider vinegar (ACV) with water. It was still hard to get down so I made a larger drink by adding some cold apple juice to the water & apple cider vinegar. I plan to take it daily this way from now on, since I'm diabetic and limit my juice intake. The watered down Apple juice cold water 2Tbs ACV, it the way to go!"
[YEA] 02/18/2012: Dale from Poulsbo, Wa: "I don't understand why anyone would try taking apple cider vinegar (ACV) straight. I take about 2 tea spoons ACV mixed with about 4 Tbs of apple juice. Taste is not strong at all. This mix works great and is not hard to take. By the way, you only taste the first and last swollow of any liquid."
Apple Cider Vinegar Lemonade
[YEA] 06/16/2009: Mama02girls from Moundsville, Wv: "I have trouble swallowing apple cider vinegar in water so here is a recipe that I think tastes like lemonade and really makes it easy to drink.
1 cup water
2 Tbsp. Apple Cider Vinegar
2 packets lemon powder (It's all natural ground up powdered lemon sold near the spices- it comes in a box of 18 packets-ask your grocer- the regular grocery stores carry it, it comes in orange and lime, too!
two packets Stevia Powder (health food store or regular grocery store).
This tastes like regular lemonade with a kick to me! I do suggest that you drink the regular apple cider vinegar in water first, that way you can appreciate how great and normal this tastes! Good luck!"
Apple Cider Vinegar Shots
[YEA] 07/04/2013: Edward C. from Omaha, Nebraska: "I take apple cider vinegar once a day by the capful. None of this diluted nonsense. I am 79 years old and going strong. Started drinking cider vinegar 30 years ago. Haven't been sick since. Good stuff."
[YEA] 05/07/2009: Dianna from Las Vegas, Nevada: "My brother swears by apple cider vinegar (ACV) so i take 1 shot of it with water i take a big sip of acv back it up with water it takes me 3 sips to finish the shot then i kill the horrible taste (i dont like vineger) with a teaspoon of salsa the kind found by vegetables its in sm. plastic container it takes away that cruicial taste have it next to u ive been doing 1 shot daily but im gonna increase it to twice daily!"

Cold Apple Cider Vinegar Drink
[YEA] 12/13/2012: Antonia from Ithaca, Ny/usa: "I have been drinking apple cider vinegar (ACV) for 6 years for my acid reflux AND bile reflux and it works every time. BUT... I have some sage advice you will appreciate. DO NOT use regular ACV you find in your average grocery store. That stuff is like battery acid and does not work as well, taste as good or is as beneficial as Organic Unfiltered apple cider vinegar. That filtered ACV is bad, bad, bad. I mix my organic, unfiltered apple cider vinegar 50/50 with water and keep it cold in the fridge. If you take a couple of swigs before eating it will prevent problems. If you are having an acid/bile problem then take a couple of swigs and wait 5 minutes. If the problem continues take two more swigs. That usually does the trick but there are those rare occasions that I have to do three doses, but it ALWAYS works. After 7 years on Protonics and then Prilosec I now ONLY use this apple cider vinegar and it works better than those drugs, with no side affects AND other great benefits."
Fresh Juice With Apple Cider Vinegar
[YEA] 10/14/2009: Ann from Elizabethtown, K7: "I juice every morning with an apple, orange, strawberries, blueberries, and kiwi and add 2 TBSP of ACV and I have lost 20lbs since January. The good thing is that I lost my weight slowly and will likely maintain it. This is the best I've felt in years!"
