Pat writes: "My husband has two broken ribs, one week ago he broke them, falling off a ladder. Today I began the comfrey poultic. How long of a period of time do I leave it on him. Could he wear the poultice through the night while he sleeps? Thanks for the info, it is really appreciated."


Chloe replies: "Yes, leaving the comfrey poultice thoughout the night works best. Ideally you'd want to make a fresh one every 4 hours as it loses its potency. I left it on through the night for my arm and it worked wonders."

CAN I CONTINUE TRAINING?

Joanne writes: "Hi Chloe, Just today I heard about comfrey root and its apparent effectiveness in healing fractures. I sustained a fracture all the way back in February this year in a sporting competition. It's located on the base of my 4th metatarsal and unfortunately I did not allow it an opportunity to heal (I contiuned training on it) and now my doctor tells me that i'm suffering from a non-union fracture, recommending i have an operation. I would prefer avoiding any such invasive treatments. Its improved somewhat, but not to the extend that I can return to complete training without pain. unfortunately, I can't compeletely stop training as I have competitions approaching. i was just wondering whether comfrey ointment will be effective even though I continue training on my foot, and the best method of application and preparation of the ointment. Also, I was wondering how long it would take for the healing to occur?

Sorry for the amount of information I'm after - this is one of my last options and I really really really want to get back into my sport - 6 months with pain is an excruciatingly long time! my ultimate aim is the olympics and I need to be in peak condition for it.

Chloe replies: "Hi Joanna,

Comfrey will mend bones but you can't keep training. It acts like a glue but you can't mend bones that are constantly moving. When you have a fracture, there is no way around it but be patient and allow nature to take its course. Comfrey will speed up the process but there is no way it will work if you keep training. You have to stop for a second, think about your health and postpone your goals. Anything you do now under painful conditions will ruin any chance for future performances. I wish I had better news but I want to be honest and get you healed, painfree and stronger."
