EXTRA VIRGIN COCONUT OIL

11/19/2008: Marion from Riverside, Ca writes: "I was on a quest to find Organic Virgin Coconut Oil. So many people from this site rave about EVCO so it led me to do my own research about the benefits and truth of EVCO. It turns out that EVCO is the best oil on Earth! Not only good internally but also topically. Just good over all healthy for your body head to toe, inside and out. So of course I HAD TO HAVE IT! After searching in every grocery store and having no luck I decided to take the long drive to our Health food store.."Trader Joe's". Was totally dissapointed to find that there was none there either. Maybe it was out of stock? The trip wasn't a total waste because I picked up a bottle of Tea Tree oil for 6 bucks which is normally $13 in drug stores. I also bought some Organic Apple Cider Vinegar there too which I hear is very good. So I guess there is not a market for Coconut Oil in California?? I guess the brain washing and false information has really worked on us Americans. What a shame! So my last stop was Walmart. I have heard that Walmart carries the low quality Coconut oil made from dried COPRA. So I wasn't too optimistic since I was only going to purchase the high quality EVCO even if it meant I had to buy online. They had the cheap stuff but I FOUND USDA EVCO there!! Yay! I'm so happy = )~ Nutiva is the brand and can be bought online as well. For 29 oz. it was $19.99 pricey I know. But well worth it since I love it on my skin and cooking with it! I guess after my long story the point is never give up in your quest for ultimate health. Cheers to good health and many blessings!"

It's by the vitamin company "Rexall", I cannot remember the size, but it was about $10.00. They also carry Tea Tree Oil, which I bought - 50ml for $5.00."

06/04/2007: Allison from New York, NY writes: "I just wanted to clear something up about Extra Virgin Coconut Oil. There is no such thing as "Extra Virgin" there is only "Virgin." This term has just been picked up from olive oil and used by marketers to market their product and try to convince people that their product is better than Virgin Coconut Oil. This is not true. So don't be fooled when a company says that it is "Extra Virgin Coconut Oil" it is still just Virgin Coconut oil."

06/16/2009: Karmala from Templeton, CA replies: "on the contrary... there is a difference.. just as in olive oil... it has to do with the length of time from harvest to jar... "
01/13/2012: Shary from Miami, Fl/usa replies: "The person above is right. There is no such thing as Extra virgin coconut oil. There is no industry standard for coconut oil, as there is for olive oil. You can read about it more in depth at Tropicaltraditions.com. They happen to make one of the best (if not the best) virgin organic coconut oils. Made the old fashion way and without the use of any machinery. Their website has alot of information on the manufacturing and terms for coconut oil. So pay them a visit, I think you'll find the information helpful."

02/25/2007: Pam from Santa Barbara, CA writes: "For people who are not sure if they are using Extra Virgin Coconut Oil. If it doesn't say that on the jar then it's not that. It is much more expensive to make and they will always label it that way. I have been taking coconut cream instead because I love it so much. I found the oil hard to take and there is plenty of fat in the cream to do the job. Pam"

Does this have the same properties as VCO or is Palm oil completely different? For now I stay with VCO but I was simply curious on the jarr of the red palm oil it said it has even more natural vitamin E - which is something I was looking for."

NAY

[NAY]  01/16/2008: RP from Chicago, IL writes: "Nay for coconut oil for the face. I have read coconut oil was good for dark circles and rashes. I have really sensitive skin. I applied virgin coconut oil to my skin and instead developed a terrible rash. It's a shame because I love the smell. I instead use vaseline as a moisturizer, especially for a rash. I apply it in the shower and sleep with it on."

Replies
05/13/2008: Kathleen from Rice Lake, WI replies: "re: Coconut Oil side effects: The rash is a good thing! It means all the toxins from your body are leaving and this creates the rash! It will go away with regular use :)"
06/22/2008: Lulu from Mpls, MN replies: "I agree on the rash being a cleanse rather than a reaction. I started using VCO on my skin a few weeks ago and I love the way my skin feels from it but at first I did have some flare ups of stuff that I thought were old and healed issues. Now after sticking to it things have gotten wonderful. If you try again to use VCO then just reassure yourself it is temporary healing. I think they call it re-tracing."
02/05/2009: Heather from WallaWalla, WA replies: "I think vaseline is a horrible toxin!!! It is petroleum based which is poison to your system and has to be removed by your body as such. Do not put petrol on your skin and keep using the coconut oil, the cleanse will complete and the rash will go away!! Vaseline is good as a firestarter if you are stuck during the winter in the woods....keep it in your car!"
02/06/2009: Dianna from Austin, Tx replies: "i can't actually believe that anyone would put vaseline on their face - but i have heard of it a lot lately. it is a by-product of the petroleum industry. besides probably being toxic going through your skin into your blood stream - it also clogs your pores so your skin cannot breathe. it may seem to work at first - but what you are actually doing is sealing your skin closed. if you put water on your skin and then seal it closed that may help with hydrating your skin with it - but i would advise against it. google vaseline and see what you think....
you may try using olive oil instead of VCO. just make sure before you use any oil on your face that your face is damp. the oils do not moisturize on their own - they seal in water. djh"
02/07/2009: Joy from Solana Beach, CA replies: "My late mother used to use vaseline all the time to moisturize her face and hands...and she had a lot of health problems. So this was just one more toxic thing...and she was not aware at the time that it was toxic."
[YEA]  11/09/2009: Kai from San Francisco, California replies: "I have sensitive skin and I love Coconut Oil! I started using it two weeks ago and my skin looks so much younger, toned and soft! I am not going to buy face creams anymore!!"
09/22/2010: Linda from York County, Maine replies: "Hi Dori-don't ever apologize for asking questions! This site is all about sharing and learning..... We take what we need and leave the rest! I use coconut oil to wash my face every night by wetting a washcloth then scooping up about 1/4 teaspoon of solid coconut oil-as soon as it hits your face, it'll liquify; it removes makeup well and leaves my skin very soft... I don't rinse, just allow it to absorb; I have not had a problem with breakouts from using it.... I tend to suffer from adult acne, but this treatment does not aggravate the acne at all.... Try it, I'm willing to bet you'll LOVE it :)"
09/22/2010: Dori from Easton, Pa replies: "I have read so much about Coconut Oil. I just bought it this morning. Question: How do you put it on your skin? Rub it in then rinse? Does it just soak in? Please excuse my ignorance on the topic. Just starting to learn."
12/03/2010: Dee from Porter, Tx, Usa replies: "Linda,
I understand not rinsing the coconut oil when using it as a moisturizer, but if you use it to remove makeup, wouldn't you have to wipe it off with a wet washcloth or a tissue? I was confused about that part. I am new to this site, and I'm trying to soak in the wealth of information. The only thing I have tried so far is the ACV."
[YEA]  12/05/2010: Linda from York County, Maine replies: "Hi Dee - I guess I do tend to go over my face again once the makeup is off.... Dab a little more c.o. on a clean part of the washcloth but I then don't wipe it off..... It absorbs quickly and leaves skin really soft. Thanks for asking for the clarification...."
10/02/2011: Eric from Seattle, Wa, Usa replies: "So the flare up is a typical result of applying VCO? We just recently (2 days ago) applied VCO on my daughter's eczema on her face, and it has gotten worse. Some threads suggest that this is a good thing, I.E. , worse then better. I am worried of my daughter well being and would like confirmation from those who have experienced this. Thx."

[YEA]  10/06/2007: Julie from Newcastle, NSW Australia writes: "I have been using coconut oil for some time now, taking it orally and cooking with it. Has anyone noticed how using coconut oil in a well used baking pan for the first time, strips the pan clean of old baked on oil residue. So much so that after baking with it, the pan will rust if you do not keep oiling it. Does this support the claim that coconut oil will cleanse your clogged arteries? Can anyone tell me how much oil you can make from 1 coconut please"

09/21/2010: Jennifer from Mi, Usa replies: "I read on another site written by a doctor who researched VCO that although it IS high in saturated fat it is a Medium Chain Fatty Acid, which means the saturated fat does not get ingested into our system. It is processed in our bodies as energy and then whatever is left is flushed out and takes all the bad stuff (toxins) with it!!"
[YEA]  03/21/2011: John from Arlington, Texas replies: "Coconut oil helped my dad get over pneumonia. It has a host of good benefits. Visit some sites where they are listed.

Coconut oil is white and solid when it is below 76 degrees. It is liquid and looks like water above 76 degrees. Unfortunately I had just bought a bottle of it for my dad, when my sister came in and poured the whole bottle down the drain. She thought it was water. lol.

Coconut oil was the only oil in a study in India which looked at the best hair oil to use. Of the three, only coconut oil penetrated the hair folicle and nurished the hair. The other two did nothing.

Yes coconut oil is not like other oils. It does not get used like other oils. It actually increases your metabolism and it is a bacteriacide, a viruscide and a fugicide. Check out the benefits for yourself."

03/22/2011: Granny Laura from Waco, Tx, Usa replies: "You are so right about the coconut oil for hair. I put some on the dry ends of my hair last week before I washed it. I put a plastic cap on and just let it soak for 2-3 hrs. I didn't put the oil on my scalp, just the ends. I had thought I would have to have 2-3 in cut off as it was so damaged. It still looks good after washing it this time. Wonder what they would have charged for an oil treatment at the hairdresser's?"

[YEA]  01/19/2010: Coconutgirl from Greenville, Sc, Usa writes: "I read several excellent books on coconut oil and gave it a try. After two years of taking around one heaping teaspoon a day or extra virgin organic (either eating it or cooking with it), I have not had a cold, sore throat, flu, cough etc, and I used to be cold a lot and have a lower body temperature. Taking the coconut oil has kept my body temperature normal. I believe I wasn't getting enough fat in my diet, since I eat about 75% vegetarian foods. I also stopped taking the flu shot when I started the coconut oil and still no flu. While everyone around me at work was sick during flu season, I got nothing! The books tell you to take much more, like a couple of tablespoons, but I am a small person, and coconut oil is expensive, so I decided to start with a small amount and stick with that. During the summer, I don't take it regularly, but during flu season, I take it or cook with it daily or at least 5 days per week. You can also just buy coconut and crack it yourself, but it takes time. The stores also have shredded coconut, which is great in oatmeal. Try different forms so you don't get bored. It's all good."

[YEA]  08/27/2007: Tony from Quezon City, Philippines writes: "I used to be a regular sufferer of flu. About 3 years ago, after reading in a book that coconut oil can kill the influenza virus that causes flu based on in-vitro studies, I took 4 tablespoon of Virgin Coconut Oil when I had flu, went to sleep and woke up after about 6 hours later and found my flu amazingly gone. Since then, I take at least 1 tablespoon of Virgin Coconut Oil everyday, and when I feel an onset of flu, I increase the intake up to 4 tablespoon and predictably the flu would not continue."

10/21/2009: Anon from Brazil replies: "I agree, its not easy to take. I don't like to cook with it either.

But I found the best way! I take it with my tea! I just make some green tea (or whatever you like), sweeten it with molasses, and put a table spoon of virgin coconut oil. Perfect combination!

Now I keep my VCO in the fridge to keep it in solid state because it's easy for me to just go take a scoop of it.

Good luck!"

Not an attractive sight. I have been using coconut oil now for about 9 months and can honestly say it has made a difference in the appearance of my toenails. One of the many properties of CO is antifungal. I can"t say enough about this tropical oil. I eat at least 3 Tbles a day I have more energy, have lost weight, no change in my cholesterol and love its taste. Try it and you will never go back to the other veggie oils."

You name it I tried it... I thought it was from salon pedicures, then, I thought damage to my nail beds from running and maybe my toes hitting the top of my shoes... Well, needless to say... I just couldn't get the fungus to go away!!! Then my life was changed by this site! I started taking ACV (Apple Cider Vineger) and VCO and I am now fungus free! I was taking the coconut oil orally ( 3 t. a day) and it made me bloated so I didn't take it for more than a month I'd say... However, I did use it as a moisterizer every night after my shower and I would specifically rub it around and under my toe nails... I cannot believe that the fungus is gone!!! Honestly! I share my story every where I go! Nail shops really need this information to pass onto their clients... Fungus makes you feel so dirty... My beautiful toe's have returned! Thank you! Earth clinic and friends! Suzie Fluss, H.B."

[YEA]  08/17/2006: Annabelle from Victoria, Australia writes: "I had toenail fungus for 5yrs. started using virgin coconut oil applied topically with amazing results. Used loceryl lacquer for 3yrs did not get rid of it. Used some oxygenated melaluca cream which helped & may have cured it but smelled so bad it really wasn't practical. I read about coconut oil on internet & gave it a go, i didn't think it would seriously work. I massaged it into top of nail & all around it & made sure it was under toenail which was easy as it is liquid (hardens in cold weather but melts on contact with skin). Now 1 big toenail totally cured, other toenail is almost gone but it was much worse and was first to be infected. Absolutely amazing and i don't even apply it everyday!!! Doesn't smell. I rub it into all my other toenails (hoping this will prevent them from getting it in them). I bought a brand from my local health food shop and made sure it was 100% virgin and this one was cold pressed-don't know if that means anything but i'm sure other brands would work, I am just thrilled with results and grateful that i gave it a go."

12/26/2011: Alicia from Vancouver, Bc, Canada writes: "Hello, can someone please recommend a good coconut oil that is available in BC Canada? Does it have to be organic and / or expeller pressed ? (don't know what that means lol )

I would also really appreciate if someone could answer some questions.

I was wondering about its use as a deodorant and after reading the many posts I'm a bit confused: does the oil HAVE to be extra virgin? How to apply it on underarms, how much? Will it be greasy and leave oil marks? Does it have to be solid or runny and does it matter?

Also I have read that some are eating it for general well being, how much and how often? Should it be cold or hot and is it better than apple cider vinegar? I know I'm asking a lot but I hope someone can help me out, this site is THE best for learning natural remedies!! I love reading the posts from all over the word. 11/29/2011: Sarah from Denver, Colorado writes: "Reply to JB of New Iberia, Louisiana: about the LouAna company--they DO make coconut oil but also make the oils that you mentioned. The local groceries decide what oils go on their shelves according to popular demand.

Also, being a "foodie" I have recently learned a little about our nation's food history. Bananas and coconuts have been coming into our ports even as our nation was being formed. I don't know when the tradition started but... "Ambrosia" is a fruit salad which includes coconut and has been served at Thanksgiving in the South for many, many years.

From what I've heard, I think baking with coconut oil--pure or not--may be preferable to using butter, which is what I do now (except for those few recipes that use a liquid oil, then I use canola)."

05/11/2011: Andreea from Grimsby, On, Canada writes: "Hello

I read a lot that was written on this site about the possible effects of VCO and decided to get some for myself. I went to the healthfood store and bought a jar and noticed on the back under the Nutritional Values that 1 tablespoon contains 22% of the recommended daily fat intake and 67% on the saturated fat intake. Given that the recommended dosage is 2-3 tablespoons a day is that normal and healthy? I am just a bit apprehensive about all that fat.

Thank you"

Replies
05/11/2011: Debbie from Melbourne, Australia replies: "Andrea why don't you google the "truth about saturated fat". Saturated fat is needed by our brain, by our lungs, by our kidneys. Butter, animal fat, cream, hard cheeses are the most healthy things you can eat. Cholesterol is necessary for the brain as well.

On the other hand margarine and vegetable oils are like rubber in our arteries.

Eating a meal with animal fat satisfies our hunger. Low fat diets only make our bodies scream out for more and most people then eat carbohydrates to fill the void. The end result is obesity and many many health problems. Many children have learning disabilities because their brain is starving.

If you didn't have carbohydrates and ate animal fats, coconut oil, Cod liver oil you would be very healthy. Govts have not been truthful about what is healthy and what is not.

There are some great books out there you can read as well. Nourishing Traditions is one."

05/11/2011: Bill from San Fernando, San Fernando, Philippines replies: "Hi Andreea... I used virgin coconut oil in order to help successfully cure my own systemic candida 4-5 years ago. I also know that when you ingest VCO -- even though it is called a saturated fat(which is why everyone is scared of it) -- the VCO is handled completely differently in the body as compared to polyunsaturated vegetable oils(PVO). PVO's are Long Chain Triglycerides which are absorbed into the lymph system and are eventually stored as fats throughout the body.

However, since VCO consists mainly of Medium Chain Tryglycerides(smaller fats than PVO's), these are absorbed directly into the blood and all of it is taken to the liver where only some of it is stored and the excess is always excreted into the intestines through the liver bile. Medium Chain Tryglycerides are never stored throughout the body as fats like PVO's.

Also, the stored VCO takes a completely different pathway than fats or sugars when energy is needed in the body. When energy is needed, the VCO stored in the liver is released into the blood as ketone bodies which are directly absorbed by all cells and easily converted to glucose to provide energy. This VCO energy pathway is completely independent from control by insulin, which is why VCO is so useful to diabetics.

VCO is an anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal:

05/12/2011: Francisca from Michelbach-le-bas, Alsace, France replies: "Hi Andrea, Debbie is absolutely right! I haven't read Nurishing Traditions yet but I can advise you two books, Trick and Treat which I have reviewed on the book review section and Fat and Cholesterol are good for you which I will review shortly, both excellent books. I hadn't realised how important saturated fats were till I came to this site! I have to thank the knowledge I have now to Bill in the Philippines.

By the way, EC, the spell check is not working!"

05/12/2011: Stacey from Triad, Nc replies: "Hi,

My experience with coconut oil is that it did cause me to gain weight and did not help decrease my appetite. I am within the upper range of "normal" bmi for my size, and was hoping to benefit from the oil for candida issues. I tried to decrease my caloric intake from other foods while taking the oil, but since I was already consuming a low-calorie, low fat diet, I gained weight and riddled with hunger pangs. This was really unfortunate, as I have to be within a certain BMI to retain 80/20 health insurance through my employer.

I found that coconut oil did help with fatigue, so I was very dissapointed that I gained so much fat in such a short time (~2.5-3.0 in around the abdomen). Because of my health insurance issue, weight is actually more important than the rest of my health for retaining medical coverage, so I discontinued use.

If you are already on a low-calorie, low fat diet, and the issue of weight gain is significant for you, it is posssible to gain weight."

05/12/2011: Andreea from Grimsby, On replies: "Thank you for your reply. Perhaps a little bit more background was called for. I had my cholesterol levels checked recently and they came back at 4.5. This is way above the high limit. However, the HDL is 2.2 (so almost equal to LDL) so the ratio is good... The doctor told me I have nothing to worry about, but I still do

I also suffered an acute pancreatitis attack one year ago. Nobody knows what caused it. I am thin and have a healthy diet. I eat lots of veggies, good fats (avocados, some butter, etc) some meat, fish, I don't smoke, I don't drink So, as you can imagine - I am scared of anything that might trigger pancreatitis again.

I will look for the books and read them

Thank you again, Andreea"

05/12/2011: Debbie from Melbourne, Australia replies: "Andrea, here is an excellent video by Dr. Natasha McBride on why cholesterol is vital for our health & the brain.

Pancreatitis in the past may indicate that you have trouble breaking down fats and are deficient in enzymes so maybe digestive enzymes would be beneficial (or maybe you are already taking them).

05/12/2011: Debbie from Melbourne, Australia replies: "Stacey, you said

"I tried to decrease my caloric intake from other foods while taking the [coconut] oil, but since I was already consuming a low-calorie, low fat diet, I gained weight and riddled with hunger pangs".

A low fat diet will cause hunger pangs because your body needs the fat. Most people eat lots of carbohydrates to compensate for being hungry. That is why the obesity levels are skyrocketing.

Our grandparents ate a high fat diet and mostly were not fat.

Here is a great website - Weston Price and a page entitled "know your fats". Heaps of info. Great website. Fats are also loaded with nutrients.

05/12/2011: Andreea from Grimsby, On Canada replies: "Thank you Debbie,

I watched the video, and it is interesting, will definetily go deeper into this..

I don't think I have trouble digesting the fats, I don't have any of the signs for this. After having the attack I was put on a low fat diet and I was miserable on it. I decided I was feeling that bad because I wasn't getting enough fat and started re-introducing it into my diet. I immediately felt better. That being said, I'm still afraid I might trigger something. I guess I will start with a low dose and see how it goes.

Thanks for your help

Andreea"

05/13/2011: Stacey from G-boro, Nc replies: "Hi Debbie,

I had made two previous attempts just introducing coconut oil into my diet without any change. I had the same weight gaining respose and no decrease in appetite. With the exception of when I had severe food poisoning, I am the sort of person who is always hungry. I have tried everything on the market to surpress my appetite, but other than diet supplements with ephedra, nothing works.

I was feeling tired walking around feeling like I was starving to death and blacking out (yes, I am hypoglycemic and do not eat sugars or statches), so I was really hoping coconut oil would work for me, but it just didn't."

[YEA]  05/04/2011: Patty from Naalehu, Hawaii writes: "Aloha, we are a family that are in the coconut business in Hawaii. We have been harvesting and processing coconuts for over 20 years. We sell fresh chopped up ripe coconut at a weekly farmer's market, and also make a yummy coconut candy, simmered with raw sugar.

Before coconut oil had made such a comeback, we always knew it was good. When we are chopping the fresh ripe coconut two or three days a week, we always make sure to eat some.

Anyway, I have now incorporated the oil also in to our diet, as my husband has been diagnosed with early Alzheimers. (Yes he ate coconut, but probably not enough to keep it at bay)

I just put in on toast in the morning with a bit of jam or honey.

As for myself, I am a 56 year old woman that has had coconut as a part of my diet all these years. I also have a different diet than my husband, he was raised local style, alot of good fish etc. but lots of meat and oils. Personally I have always said that it is the coconut that keeps me so full of energy and so healthy. (I also eat lots of local fruit and vegetables)

Coconut rules, I always knew that!"

I love to cook with the Coconut oil as well. Hope to hear back from you soon. Thanks for the info in advance."
