Anti-depressant Side Effects
Like the old generation of serotonin-uptake-inhibitor meds, these new anti-depressant and anti-anxiety meds have side-effects: weight gain, sexual problems, and lethargy to name a few.
Weight Gain:
Keeping the weight down is one of the most difficult battles one faces on some of these medications. We believe the medications cause the digestive system to slow down and process food at a much slower rate; one that mimics the aging process.
If you suffer from mild to moderate depression or anxiety, you might ask your doctor about going on a lower dosage of the medication you are on. Usually a lower dosage cuts down on most side effects, especially weight gain and lethargy. In cases of mild to moderate depression or anxiety, a lower dosage can work very effectively on brain chemistry but leave you feeling more normal.
You might find the below remedies helpful in stimulating your digestion.
Excellent: Ayurvedic Drachsha - an herbal relitalizer. The best remedy on the market, we believe. Made with grape juice and extracts of many traditional ayurvedic herbs and spices. Also excellent for constipation. Very good way to lose weight, especially if combined with apple cider vinegar. (Note: if you buy this product, buy the 32 oz size (around $33) as it will last you about a month. Most cost efficient.)
Excellent: Apple Cider Vinegar. Read about the amazing benefits of this inexpensive home remedy.
Very Good: Drink Chai Tea (also known as Yogi Tea) throughout the day. Try our recipe if you have the time. You can also buy the teabags in most stores If you don't have time to make the chai tea recipe, go to an Indian Tea and Spice store and ask them for a bag of Tea Masala (chai tea spice)... also for a box of good black tea. All you do is add a pinch of the Tea Masala to your boiling black tea and voila! Milk and honey make this a delicious treat.
Good: Aloe Vera Juice
Sexual Dysfunction:Lack of sexual desire is another very common side effect of these medications. We have some very simple suggestions.
Suggestion #1: Raise your energy level! From an energetic standpoint, lack of sexual desire stems from a lack of energy. More specifically, a lack of red energy, or "First Chakra" energy. If you don't have enough red in your energy system, which you get by working out regularly with energy building exercise, you will feel neither healthy, energized, nor -- need we say it -- passionate. With enough energy circulating through your system regularly, desire and vitality will return.
Suggestion #2: Vitamin E capsules. Vitamin E is an excellent natural aphrodisiac. Great too for women who suffer from vaginal dryness.
LethargyIf you are sleepy or find yourself a bit lethargic, we have a few suggestions:
#1. Exercise, exercise, exercise! We recommend the following energy building movement arts: Yoga, Pilates, Bellydance, a Martial Art that suits your temperament, Continuum Movement, Spinning (group cycling), Swimming, Walking, and Stretching consciously.
#2: The right amount of caffeine in the morning. Try and avoid coffee if you can. Besides having much more caffeine than tea, it also depletes your system of many vitamins and minerals. We recommend Chai Tea (see section above). Drink until you feel alert, but not jittery. The right amount of caffeine in the morning should last you most of the day.
