Ear Infection Remedies for Pets

I read a post about treating dog ear infection with home remedies. I used 1 Tbsp. Balsamic vinegar, 2 Tbsp. hydrogen peroxide and 3 Tbsp. water and swabbed ears with this. Two treatments and the irritation and redness was gone. Cleaned ears for three day and she was cured. No doctors visits. This works!!!

My cousin's lab puppy's ear was red and hot. there was dried blood and dirt in it too. i have a book of home remedies for dogs and cats. cleaned ear with acv plus water then mixed 1 tbsp pure aloe vera gel and 1/2 tsp hydrogen peroxide. she's getting over it nicely' at first i used 2 eyedroppersful but got better results with 3 she had a small growth under an eye on the same side as the affected ear and it has disappeared. could it have been a mite? just want to mention,i mixed up the mixture to put in her ear fresh everyday.

We have a poodle Bridgett who gets infections after grooming. My wife takes 1/2 peroxide and water and cleanse her ears and then takes virgin coconut oil and rubs her ears and it works great no scratching and rubbing until the next grooming.

Thank you for the remedy about using the peroxide in the cats water. I believe it cured his ear infection and saved his life. My cat was running diarrhea,vomitting and would not eat for two days. I used an ear dropper with the water peroxide solution, gave him Pedialyte so he would not dehydrate. I also, rubbed apple cider vinegar on him until I could get him to the vet. He started drinking on his on even before I got him to the vet. He is back to his old self. Also for now, I'm not gaving him water from the sink. I'm also letting him eat a little raw chicken, which he loves. I freeze it first. He's doing great.

I have a 4 year old pug who usually only got ear infections in the summer due to her love of swimming (she has a lab big brother what can I say.) this winter she has had two ear infections, both cured with home remedy. (I have a solution from the vet seemed to only clean it but not kill it.) So I tried equal parts vinegar, rubbing alcohol and peroxide. It worked, period. The smell, ooze, scratching, all stopped after 1st treatment. Cleaned and repeated 3 timnes a day until cleared and continued to clean with vet solution. I dont know what the vet will say when we get her in but it has worked twice now...I'll update if I get in trouble!

I have 2 yellow labs, one 9 the other 6. Both have had ear infection problems. The 9 year old had ear infections when he was a pup through year 3. Then a redneck vet gave us the solution. Mix 4-5 drops of iodine with warm water, draw up in bulb syringe squirt in ear. Rub ear and side of head for a few minutes. Place cottonball in ear as far as possible, then pull out. Don't worry never lost one yet in over 5 years. Continue with cottonballs until clean. In two days, it'll be cured. Continue to do once every month or two. Don't let dog swim in ponds or lakes. Ocean, most rivers, and pool is okay.

The rubbing alcohol works for swimmers ear because it breaks the surface tension of the water trapped in the ear, which facilitates draining. The trapped water is not sterile and creates a nice warm humid environment for bugs to grow in.

Get the water out and no infection develops. I use the cocker spaniel ear cleaner which is alcohol based after my setter has been swimming to avoid problems from this. And I learned it when I was a kid, from dad, who was a competitive swimmer ; -)

After a year of trying to figure out the perfect solution to clean my dogs ears to cure and then prevent her ear infections I learned that the only way to keep her infection free is to put NOTHING liquid in her ears! I took her to the vet with a raging ear infection in both ears which they suggested removing her ear canal for a long term prevention treatment! Of course that was a big fat NO!

After clearing up her infection with Mometamax and Baytril Otic, I maintained her condition by wiping her ears out with a tissue every day!!!

I put NOTHING in her ears! Now I am able to wipe out her ears maybe 1x a week. I've also started putting a drop of Zymox Otic Enzymatic solution in her ears, wiping that out with the tissue then following it up with a little powder. She has been infection free for MONTHS!!! AFter 10 years of fighting for a solution for her problems i've figured it out! She smells great and doesn't hate her ear cleanings anymore! I hope this helps anybody who is struggling with this same problem. One last thought, I literally put a drop of the enzymatic solution in her ears, no more. Also, I always have the meds on hand in case I smell the beginning of an infection. Fortunately I have not had to use them!!!

I have used olive oil many times for ear infection or mites in ear and has always cured it just a couple of drops then massage ear to work it down

I tried the Vinegar solution but it only caused more redness in my dogs ears. But I have had great success with the Olive Oil and milk remedy. 2tbs oil to 1 tbsp of milk, warmed up. Soak a piece cotton wool in the mixture and rub on the inside of the ears making sure only a little goes into the ear cavity. It is really helping, the redness and smell is nearly gone. It will need to be kept up once a day a least to keep it at bay for now though.

Peroxide, water and vinegar mixed,, 1 teaspoon each has made my dogs ears smell good, plus a probiotic every day and a drop of vinegar on the food daily...

I am a breeder of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Every year I was fighting ear infections in some of my doggies, as Cavaliers have long ears and infections are quite common. After learning about use of probiotic formula for pets 2 years ago, I don't see these infections any more. I am giving them just a little sprinkle (a pinch) on their food once a day - not even the recommendation on the product container. Only once a week I am cleaning their ears, but there are no infections. You can buy this "Geneflora Probiotic formula" in any pet store. It costs around $36.00, which is much cheeper then vet visits, medications and the time involved. I hope this will help somebody else as well...

WOW... This site has been a godsend. My shihtzu has had chronic skin issues and ear infections for years. His skin has been managable lately but his ears never seem to clear up even after 2 weeks of a daily dose of ear antibiotics. I took him off the ears meds and started him on acidophilus mixed with fish oil on sunday-01/22/12. I also started wiping his ears with a 50/50 ratio of white vinegar and water. His ears are clearing up!!! I'm not sure if its the acidophilus, the vinegar or both. He's still doing a lot of paw licking at night around bedtime, of course, but not near as much licking during the day. I've given him plain yogurt a couple of times, also, but it's tough convincing him to eat it.

I plan on buying raw, organic Apple Cider Vinegar this weekend so that I can really soak his paws and see how that works. I also plan on gradually adding to his water.

this works perfectly for my dogs after many wasted trips to the vet and many useless expensive drug treatments

* 16 Oz. Isopropyl Alcohol
* 4 Tablespoons Boric Acid Powder
* 16 Drops Gentian Violet Solution 1%

Mix together in alcohol bottle and shake well. You also will need to shake solution every time you use it to disperse the Boric Acid Powder. To use, purchase the "Clairol" type plastic bottle to dispense solution to affected ears.

TREATMENT: Evaluate condition of ears before treating and if very inflamed and sore do not attempt to pull hair or clean out ear at all. Wait until inflammation has subsided which will be about 2 days. Shake the bottle each time before using. Flood the ear with solution (gently squirt bottle), massage gently to the count of 60, wipe with a tissue. Flood again on first treatment, wipe with a tissue and leave alone without massage. The dog will shake out the excess, which can be wiped with a tissue. Best done outside wearing old clothes, as the Gentian Violet does stain fabrics.

The SCHEDULE of treatment is as follows: Treat 2x per day for the first week to two weeks depending upon severity of ears. Treat 1x per day for the next 1-2 weeks. Treat 1x per month (or even less frequently, depending on the dog). All of these ingredients should be available at a pharmacy. Despite the alcohol, most dogs will not object to even the first treatment. The Boric Acid Powder soothes the ear. The Gentian Violet Solution is an anti-infection agent. The solution appears to work well on any and all ear problems from mites to wax to canker. After the 2nd or 3rd day you can clean out the ear with a Q-tip or cotton balls. Their success rate for this treatment is 95-99%. Those who do not succeed have usually not done the treatment long enough or have not been regular about it.

I have used this on my dog (a cocker spaniel) for more than 10 years. No more ear infections!

Dog Ear Cleaner

16 oz. rubbing alcohol
10 drops violet solution
2 tabs. boric acid powder

You can purchase violet solution and boric acid powder at the drug store. Pour a little of the rubbing alcohol out of a 16 oz. bottle. Add the violet solution (be careful! - it stains) and the boric acid powder. Shake well. Put 5-8 drops in each ear several times per week. Shake each time you use it. You will save loads of money on vet bills - no more ear infections in your dog!
