[YEA] 04/15/2009: Leighanne from Mena, Arkansas, USA writes: "I had done some research on mange and found out that they live in the cuticle of the hair. My husband and I have a beauty school and know how to open and close the cuticle. We decided to try Salon grade 40% Volume peroxide on a sample of our dog's hair to see if it would lift color, know that if the color would lift, the cuticle would open. Our dog is a black doberman mix and it lifted the color right out in 30 minutes. We decided to use level 2 brown (black) hair color (salon grade NOT grocery store hair color) mixed with equal parts the 40 Volume Developer. I applied it to the area of the mange and about 2" beyond. Left it on for 30 minutes and then rinsed and shampooed with salon grade shampoo and conditioner. Time may vary depending on the brand of hair color and developer used. There are some beauty supply shops that are open to the public that you can buy salon grade hair color, developer and shampoo and conditioner. I then apply a salon grade silkening protien on the area every day. I have been applying color once a month for the past 4 months. The mange is almost gone and she smells good too! I may have to keep coloring her hair for the rest of her life but only her hairdresser will know!
I learned to use salon grade products on my animals when I had a hairless doberman. Her skin was so dry from the pet shampoos so I tried my shampoo and conditioner on her and she quit having dry skin and quit itching. I've used them ever since."
[WARNING!] 08/31/2009: Aurora from Kingston, On Canada replies: "I clean with 30% peroxide quite often. It blasts drains open, removes lime buildup, lifts paint and peels the skin off the fingers within seconds! I can't even begin to IMAGINE using anything more than 3% - thats THREE percent on a dog's skin which is even more delicate than ours! IMO conventional treatment is safer than this particular remedy. I can only hope anyone tries a skin patch on themselves before they subject their pet to any of these remedies.
I'm very big on DIY, not when it endangers the patient however.

09/01/2009: Indigo from Anchorage, Alaska replies: "Mange mites don't live in the hair cuticle. I think this is confused with the fact that the outer shell of the mite is called a cuticle. Mites live in the hair follicle, not in the hair, so "opening" the cuticle of the hair has nothing to do with mange control.
Whenever treating any invader, the first step isn't the product or the remedy but to identify the parasite and obtain accurate information on its habits and life style.
Depending on the type of mange, the dog may recover control on his own and the remedy applied may have nothing to do with it. Skin damage can result from applying these products."
12/01/2010: Gary from Burns, Or. replies: "The part that is used in another home remedy is 1 part 3% peroxide to 4 parts water and borax but never 30% peroxide and another uses neem oil which is 1 tbs. To 1 gallon of water with one drop of Dawn dishsoap."
12/22/2011: Diamond from Salisbury, Usa replies: "I was using Teds remedy. It has done great for close to a year with only one follow up in between when I used a lotion for head lice, it's almost as if the solutions used are only good once, like it gets used to the mites and/or the system (not sure) it too worked temp. I noticed there was tiny bugs floating around the house, a few were like baby fleas, then the others flew by so fast I didn't get a look at them, however there were dead bodies of what looked like the mange bugs on my kitten in my fish tank so it's obvious they search water when out of animals body? My kitten is easily targeted because I feel they do search sickly animals first or a weaker immune system, as of late I either use head lice treatment or just a cream rinse then use a comb specially for combing out head lice. It's a great temp. remedy and less stressful on my cat with just the cream rinse, it's quicker and less painful. Thanks for letting me share."

this is a great website. I have a westie which was diagnosed with Demodex mange and has been living with it for 5 years.... Inflamed toes... Black belly.. Torn skin... Bloody tail... Lotsa dried blood.. Etc etc. Its usually the ivermectin, heartworm tablets and lotsa $$$ that is spent at the vet which temporarily gets rid of the demodex.
Now I have discovered ACV. Today is the 3rd day of ACV in his food and he is no more scratching at all.
I intend to start giving my baby some multi-vitamin tablets and would like to know whether those sold over the counter consumed by humans can be given to my westie. If not, what brand of pet multivitamin would be good? Which ingredients in the vitamin tablets should I stay away from.
I have also placed an order for Borax and will be following thru the HydroPero Borax regime.

[YEA] 12/24/2009: Gdsmkg from Las Vegas, Nv, USA writes: "After adopting a very sick cat from SPCA, he had ear mites, mange, ring worm. I first tried the borax mixture that I found on here, saw a little improvement but not much. Tried olive oil in the ears, was very soothing but didn't seem to do much.
Then I tried one capful of natural apple cider vinegar to a cup of water. I took a cotton ball, dipped it in the mixture, rang it out good. Then cleaned his ears with a slightly moist cotton ball. Within a couple of days I saw a big difference in his ear grime.
So then I thought I would try it for the mange and ring worm, I took the mixture, and soaked his ear good. I also wet the areas where there was the most flakiness and crusty flakes. Again within a week, big improvement! I highly recommend anyone to try this, but for him I couldn't use full strength. Just the smell made him puke on the spot.
One capful is all you need to one cup tepid water, it worked so well. I imagine you could also use it in a spray bottle and spray around the house, wherever he hangs out. They also liked me, so I used full strength on myself for ring worm and mange mites."

I never got to see what it looked like first hand until I just saw the picture of mange on a dog in this chat forum. I have been trying to find out what my kitten has, I found her as a stray roaming aimlessly around certain streets, I looked at her sores and thought it was where she keeps biting her self, then I saw this black mite come out of her fur/how gross, I have tried about every thing including dawn dish liquid there are white sores all over her body then some black sores I'm assuming are the mites. I'm going to have to try everything until I find a remedy and first is the Apple Cider Vinegar with warm water. I am constantly cleaning everything with either amonia or bleach. Thanks to every one here for your input, it's been a god send for this site. I cannot afford a vet only to find I'm back to square one still looking for the same remedies. Thanks....... ;o)"

08/25/2011: Sam from Qld, Australia replies: "IF YOU ARE SERIOUS ABOUT HELPING YOUR PET WITH MANGE, PLEASE READ. My dogs hair was falling out so naturaly I look him to the vet, spending hundreds on vet bills, skin scrapes and medication, I was told I had to put him on ivomec, I didn't know much About the product but trusting the vets advice I begain to use the ivomec. I was recommended 1.2 ml a day until the mite died. About 2 weeks into the treatment I noticed a big change in my dog, but it was not for the better. He was swaying and began to fall over. He became a very sick dog. I took him straight off the medication and he became healthy again, but it did not kill the demodectic mite he was diagnosed with. I didn't seem to have any form Of effect on the mite at all.Almost giving up I found this site! I read a few post and saw a few people had positive things to say about apple cider vinegar. I was in my local shopping centre and it caught my eye. I thought it was worth a try! I have been puring it directly on a cotton bud and applying it directly to the infected area! I had only applied it to one section of the infected area for testing and In just four days his hair had starting growing back in this section, its clear that this really works as the areas I havnt applied it to were still the same, I had noticed a huge difference, so t I applied it to all the infected areas. Pryer to using the ACV, I rubbed mayonnaise over the infected area ( This is ment to help to suffocate the mite), and have started him on a raw food diet. If your serious about helping your pet I seriously reccoment these things:
1. Make sure he/she is clean.
2. Make sure where they sleep is clean.
3. Clean drinking water
4. Put them on a raw food diet. - tuna - off cuts of raw meat from your local butcher. - raw egg - & graded carrot.
5. Add a thick layer of mayonnaise to the infected area. Leave it on for a few hours! Rince off with water!
6. When infected area is dry rub on apple cider vinigar and leave it on.
I just wanted to share my experience and findings with everyone, and helpfully this info can help someone else as it has helped me!"

I am very sad because I try to keep her clean and I do what the vet say and it is not working. I wonder how she is getting the mites. I have birds and I want to know if the birds may transmite the mites to my dog. Also, I have grass in my backyard do you know if the mites are also present in the grass? I am going to start today the ACV treatment. Thank you"
01/29/2012: Chlo3l33 from Atlanta, Georgia replies: "My puppy mill rescue dog has had demodectic mange all of his three years since I've had him when he was 2 weeks old. I took him to a couple different vets when one treatment would fall then to the next. And here's what I'm learning after I almost lost my dog after what was diagnosed as overdose on ivermectin-which by the way is great for ear mites and the mange, caused my dog to go blind and paralyzed within hours of the new refilled dosage of ivermectin-any treatment for demodex mites are temporary only because it will start taking over your pet's skin because of the weak immune system. So whatever works, great. Keep On that track until it doesn't work, go back to something that used to work. It won't cure your dog, but will make it manageable."

I have tried everything and more from the regular md's including pain pills for years to get rid of that horrible head ache around my eyes and cheek bones. A couple of years ago while walking, I Met a man' selling a book about Cancer cures/prevention. he had published the book himself and i was interested in prevention, and what he had to say. He told me that all Humans and animals would benefit greatly by drinking and BATHING in ORGANIC APPLE CIDER VINEGAR WITH THE MOTHERS... I found this to be very interesting and decided to do my own experiments and research, I have a dog who was beginning to get mange on her hind knee it was red and irritaded the vets wanted to give her some horrible medicine and she was clearly not feeling well.I held him over the sink and poured the Vinegar strait from the bottle over her infected knee she squirmed a bit probably from the stinging but a second later that smart pooch put her leg on my chest so i could at it better (as though she knew i was gonna fix her) after the first time it was 80% better and in two days that mange was gone! so I took a bath using the vinegar i probably used a quart as I buy it in gallon jugs ...I could not believe how I felt after one bath..."Reborn" is the word that comes to mind. after that one bath I began to take it orally, in the morning or anytime i had heart burn another ailment of mine...The ACV has worked wonders,also it took My skin tags off and made my skin and hair so much brighter.i also only use coconut oil for moisturizing and a small amount in my hair for dryness..."

I use and recommend apple cider vinegar (braggs) to most everyone as it seems to have amazing healing capabilities. I never thought about using on my animals. Duh. One of my pugs that was rescued from a puppy mill came to me with a hot spot on her tail. Within 2 weeks she was covered in hot spots. Vet said she had allergies.Soon pug #2 with beautiful hair had spots all over her, to the point of bleeding. Vet said pug #2 had allergies as well. I thought this odd since everyone was fine until the puppy mill pug came to live with us. Had a skin scrape done and nothing was found. Many hundreds of dollars later, pug #3 and husky are scratching and have hot spots all over them. Figuring its not allergies but rather mange, mites maybe scabies. I have started using apple cider vinegar on all dogs and myself as I felt a couple of bites on my arms. I will let you know the result. Should have thought of this a long time ago!"

09/11/2011: Booda from Auburn, Nh replies: "I have 2 dogs Booda (pug) & Bella (Lab/Border Collie) booda started digging about 2-3 months ago and the vet said allergies, than Bella is itching since 2-3 weeks ago and now so am I, as we speak :-(. This is a big deal as I have done meds, cleaning everything in hot water, vacuming, and a scrin scrap that was negative on booda (pug) my vet says fleas (dont see any types of bugs at all), and my dr says dry skin or stress. 11/29/2011: Teri from Alvin, Texas replies: "Dear Folks with itching dogs- my dad has two Boston's Terriers and they both have suffered with the chewing on feet, tail etc. Dad was able to take them to a vet dermatologist (yet- there is such a beast- kidding) they had the "scrape test". Results were varied from foods to different grasses- in other words ALLERGIES- egads. They are now (and have been for years) on a rabbit meat diet (available canned and in dry from various manufactures) and doing well. There are also Limited Ingredient Diets you may want to try. When they occasionally find their way into the cat food or something outside (like spring or fall) sets off the chewing feet- we give them benadryl. I know telling the dosage is important here but the best I can do for you is to advise you to ask/call your vet - most will tell you over the phone how much for your dog's weight. Hope this helps. Patience is key."

06/12/2009: Doggie Nahni from Wilmington, OH writes: "We rescued a pure bred Springer (Buddy) Sept. 2007 for my daughter as therapy for her conversion disorder(causes non-epileptic siezures) then in March we rescued a sheltie/chow mix puppy (Hercules) for her birthday. Everything was fine until we moved to a farmhouse with 2.6 acres. We were having trouble with potty training Herc but the farmhouse has a doggy door and there have been no more accidents (Buddy has been a great pac leader), the propery was still in town and the there was so much room to play for the dogs so it's been great for all of us or so we thought. Hercules started with a spot on his muzzle, I thought it was because he and Buddy love to wrestle and chew on each other so I thought it was from that, then Herc started chewing his legs and I started to notice raw spots on the front ones, then it was like over night and his back and fromt legs were going bald and he was scratching and chewing like mad and then the stink. It was atrocious. I wanted to take him to the vet but my husband is not into spending that kind of money on pets but since they were our daughters he said she could take him if she paid for it. I decided to do some research on what it could be and came up with the conclusion it was mange. I then started researching natural remedies since I am into that for my own family I thought why not the pets. I came across your website, read the postings and told my daughter about it then gave her the choice. She decided to try the natural route first. We started last night. We washed him with Herbal Essance Anti Dandruff then soaked him with the mixture and let him dry naturally. I washed both dogs bedding since they tend to go in and out of each others kennels, then I made a mixture of Apple Cider Vinegar,Neem Oil (very stinky) and Borax and sprayed their clean bedding and all around their room and sprayed Buddy (although he shows no signs of mange) then I made a spray bottle of the Listerine, Baby Oil and water to help with the stink. I do think he looks a little better but I am wondering if I should do this daily for a few weeks or every other day. He is licking but not chewing so I am thinking of giving him a dose of Benedryl. How much washing and spraying and treating is too much. Is daily too much until I see a noticable improvement? I hate seeing him look so miserable, he was such a pretty pup and now he looks like a 'mangy mut'. Someone please let me know a really good schedule to use for treatment! Thanks in advance:)

04/03/2011: Diamond from Salisbury, Ma replies: "Doggie Nahi;Wilmington, OH.I think I read the treatments to be a week apart, but please don't quote me, Im not too sure of where to actually start, my mangy mutt is a kitten(chuckles)she is very hard to hold onto and I have no one to actually help me. I did part of her mid section back but I never got to get to her tail which is also infested, I tried to do her ears where they too are a nasty smelly mess, it's a total nightmare and I know she is in great pain even though I did some of the work she seems to feel better than when I found her as a stray.

[YEA] 05/11/2011: Atts from Brooksville, Fl replies: "I found an easy solution for mange. A small matted pekingese ran in front of my daughters car. Well thank god she didnt hit it. She brought her home and she was badly matted with black mange from mid torso to back legs. She was so stinky I could smell her from across the room. I work with a local rescue so she knew I wouldnt turn her away. I shaved the matts. She is a small dog so it was easier to do this. I put olive oil on her for two days and covered it with a small very stretchy sock cutting holes in it like underpants. Of course I removed it to take her outside.After two days of that I soaked her for 15-20 minutes in Dr Scholls foot soak (CVS has a brand of there own foot soak almost same ingredients) which contains borax, iodine and some other very good ingredients. I did not dry her I let her just blot dry and air dry. I saw immediate improvement in her. I have used the olive oil on many mites and lices before and the foot soak on my own kids that had itchies! So I tried in on this small beautiful girl. What a success! The black skin flaked off and low and behold she had short hair under that huge patchy place. Her coat was full thick and shiney. She laid down and off to sleep she went. Cheap and easy fix. Now I will take her to the vet to check microchip and get a checkup. Hope everything else goes just as well!"

I just used a home remedy of Apple Cider Vinegar & mayonaise on the hot spots on my dog & (mange) his itiching seemed to go away immediately. I then put the ACV in a spray bottle with water and a tiny bit of hydrogen peroxide and sprayed the carpet and his bedding. I gave my dog a bath and shampooed the carpet. I put 2 tablespoons of ACV in his food and he licked his bowl clean. took him to the park and dabbed mayonaise(2 tablespoons-suffocates the Mites)on his chest where the red spots were and the itiching and then brought him home and gave him a good bath. I washed his bedding and then sprayed it with ACV, water, H202. I have not heard him scratching since. Lou"

The Mayo she said deprives oxygen from getting to the mite...
I just took a plastic teaspoon and slathered it on the hair loss patch and directly on with the mite bumps ... about an hour later I removed the mayo with a paper towel.. and took sterile gauze pads and soaked them in the apple vinegar.. I left the gauze soaked pads in place for about 10 minutes ( my pooch was very cooperative. so I guess she felt relief immediately.. and became calm as if she was getting a spa treatment.
I did this procedure twice in 12 hours ( night time ) and I am amazed to report that YES the mites vacated the bumps .. you can see the exit opening in the bumps
but they were evidently trapped in the mayo.. and were tossed out in the paper towel..(RIP... < smile > and my dog's relief? priceless all this from my cupboard./ grocery store.. fantastic
I now have made a mixture of the borax soap ( 20 mule team laundry detergent .. from Von's grocery store) and diluted 3 percent hydrogen peroxide ( cut with equal amounts of water to reduce it to approx 1 percent hydrogen peroxide )
I made a paste of sorts of the mixture and took a plastic spoon and mad a sort of poultice? covering the effected mite bumps on my dog.. I have placed it on her and am letting her dry -- as I said the relief she is getting is making her soooooo cooperative
NOW while she is sleeping I am taking all towels used, and my bed sheets and putting them in the washing machine..bleach, hottest water, 20 Mule Team Laundry detergent .. and washing everything while she sleeps ..
wow I cant believe the difference @80 percent improvem3ent and almost all the mite mounds/bumps are gone !!Again thank you for this web site.. amd thanks Ted and the woman with the Rescue in Florida for posting your natural treatments on this site ..
I notice that there is a cure for people who have Scabies.. with the same remedies
if it works as well on the same treatment for people as it did my little dog.. i can only imagine what relieve it would be.. hopefully I won't befall such a medical issue myself.. but if I ever should I am reaching for the mayo and cider vinegar.. and the borax and peroxide treatment --cause they are Very Very effective.. Leave it on as long as you can before rinsing it off. After rinsing I like to shampoo the dog and rinse with vinegar and water. The dog may smell like a salad while wearing the mayo, but the mayo suffocates the mites. We run a dog rescue and take in babies with all sorts of skin ailments, and this works like a charm getting rid of mites. Lots of people claim dogs with mange are incurable - well, the mange caused by mites is taken care of with mayo every time."
April thanks for posting tis.. I did this twice in 12 hrs to my little female pooch
it is awesome.. and the mayo also made her coat smooth and the vinegar balanced out the residual redness of her skin .. I can't believe how well it worked and how calm it made her.. like she was getting a spa treatment .. the may gave her instant relief
guess the mites are less active right away?? And she just laid there I was able to leave the mayo on for over an hour each time. I put sterile gauze pads in the apple vinegar and let them stay on her deflated mite sites......again AWESOME.. about 75 to 80 percent better after the first treatment and a small gain after the 2nd on.. I am letting her skin recuperate and w ill do it again in a day or two
my question.. how often to you do this treatment.. how long does it take ( does it vary) to eliminate all the mite sites? and more specific instructions would be appreciated

The vet thought it was allergies, then mange. But neither med helped nor relieved the itching. I found this website and have read alot. I have ruled out poor diet, wheat, grains. I tried ACV and H2O and it does relieve itching and I noticed his coat was very soft afterwards. I will continue to use this as a rinse after his baths. But after a few days the redness got worse.
I decided to try the Ted's mange remedy. I will say that after 2 days he has gotten better. I put the mixture in a spray bottle and either squirt it on his belly and groin area (he doesnt really like being sprayed) or I put it on a cotton ball and rub it all over his underside. He really likes this better. I just pet him and talk to him until it dries. My problem is that he wants to lick this area afterwards so I do rub it on him 2-3 times a day. He loves having his belly rubbed so it is very easy for me to soak his underside. He is a great puppy, I hope this continues to work. I will post again after I have done this longer."

Usa replies: "I have found some great things in here, I was just considering puting this kitten to sleep because she had so many illnesses, she would eat and throw it up but it was the hair balls she threw up, then to top things off I didn't know what mange was or even seen it to know, this kitty was a stray and it looked as though she had chewed on her skin so much I couldn't tell what she had, then I came into this site and found out exactly what she has, everything I put on her she laps it right off no matter what it is, I just put mayonaise on her and she loves it(chuckles) it's hard to occupy her time & mind while I am trying to treat her, she was eating her cat food while I put the mayo. I have a very strong feeling that this mange/mites suck's all the nutrients as well as the blood from animals(?) that might be why my kitten is so thin and loses weight as fast and as soon as she eats. I have been giving her probiotics called L-Lysine 500 it's good for maintenance of nitetrogen balance, I give her one every day for the first ten to fifteen days, then every other day only because she is small for a kitten an thin. I also hope to wash her down again with Apple Cider Vinegar to get the vit. I know I cannot use Q-tips and I did use cotton swabs but I can't reach all the way inside and she starts getting feisty. Her fur is full of scabs, I hope this means the mites are dead? I continue to clean every thing in the house, from bed linnen, and every where she sits or lays down to nap. My dogs are going to a groomer the first of next week, I also put Apple Cider Vinegar on their backs, I also gave them a bath in ammonia and they loved it, no reactions from the ammonia either. I brought home a cat with mange and tried everything. I could not find Borax here in Brooklyn, but I came up with a remedy that worked, I mixed
1 oz. apricot kernel oil
1/2 oz. castor oil
2 dropperfuls Neem oil
2 dropperfuls Oregano oil
I applied it whenever I saw the cat scratching to the area being scratched. Took a week or two to get it all. Also important to vacuum bedding and I sprayed that with rubbing alcohol mixed with 10 drops Peppermint essential oil and 10 drops Thyme essential oil."

My 6mnth old Amstaff pup developed dermodectic mange. At first just one spot on the top of her head, then moved to her cheek, eye and nose. Tried the conventional dip routine - didn't work, mite population wasn't decreasing after two weeks and the dip made the pup very drowsy and nauseous. Looked on this site and found the 'Acne cream cure'. I bought some from my local chemist - called 'Benzac' here. Applied it to the first spot on top of the head every day for a week. After two weeks the hair started growing back. Have since applied to all the bald spots and after approx two weeks of treatment, the hair is growing back on all the patches. She is also on homeopathic sulphur and immune boosters, but looking great.

He was also killing any plants in the garden he urinated on! I stopped the treatment as I believed ivermectin was worse than the mange. I found a remedy on this site Benzoyl Peroxide 5% gel, which you can get over the counter for Acne. I read some scientific study of this product for Mange and it has two affects. It opens the pours that the mites are living in and the product then kills the mites. After the first application we saw an immediate affect. My dog stopped biting and licking his paws. We carried on treating him for about a week, rubbing a small amount of the gel in to the affect areas. It all went ! It is amazing. The amount of time and money we have spent trying to treat him. I can't believe that an appalling product such as ivermectin is being used, when a small local application of benzoyl peroxide does the trick. If the mange ever comes back we just apply the gel and it goes. We have had the same tube for 6 months now, it is so economical (maybe another reason why vets don't recommend it!)"
Replies09/30/2007: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "I agree that commercial products are useless, but I worked for a commercial interest as an industrial chemist once (just moonlighting!), and the point in making certain products is NOT to cure, but to make sure the medicine is weak enough or useless enough so that people can keep coming back again and again for more.Oh yes, one more interesting tidbit on "company policies" that I worked for. They have this policy that says UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES can anyone in the company claim a cure, even if it IS A CURE. The reason why this is so, is it HURTS business interest a WHOLE LOT. And here is the reason why:
A cure they can sell you only once, say make $5 profit, but it becomes a lucrative product, if you HAD to buy them every month for the rest of your miserable life. Instead of a $5 profit, it becomes $60 per annum - annuity! You have a choice of a $60 annuity for the rest of your life, or a one time $5 profit.
Any company would choose the $60 annuity, and so does banks. Hence, the pressure to sell GMO plants that cannot bear seeds, modifying your DNA (by horizontal gene transferring), making you more sick, so you can buy MORE medicine. It makes business sense and it kills us. It is the same with vaccines which as mycoplasma, monosodium glutamate, mercury & aluminum added, not on consent of the parents, but by mandate.
Hence, because I wasn't a genius in formulating this kind of twisted medicine, I was eventually fired since all the formulas I submitted was "just a cure". Also the formula had to be complicated enough to get a patent. Finally, it also had to be formulated in such a way that people keep will buying them for the rest of their lives. Those are the three major policies: no cure, complicated, and addictive!
Benzoyl peroxide 5% gel works quite well on mild cases of mange. It works the same way as hydrogen peroxide and borax, although the benzoyl won't kill the demodectic directly (benzoic acid and oxygen, when broken down is not an insecticidal), it kills them by oxidative properties of the peroxide portion. It works like a hydrogen peroxide, but without the insect killing properties of the borax. So simple cases of mange a benzoyl peroxide would do.
However, I would much prefer to mix borax with the benzoyl peroxide to get some insecticidal properties, at the very least. Still my dog had a bad case of mange, and it didn't work for him, perhaps it was because I didn't add borax at the time, but I decided it was safer for my dog to use a hydrogen peroxide with borax, at the very least borax had a LASTING effect on killing mites and fleas, as the borax powder continues to kill WHEREVER the dog goes.
A benzoyl peroxide used alone couldn't do this, but it becomes a mild preservative (benzoic acid) instead of an insecticidal borax that has essential mineral of boron in nutrition for mammals, such as my dog, if it does so happen on accidental ingestion. "
05/29/2009: Marg from Pflugerville, TX replies: "We have a 11-week-old puppy with demodedic mange around her eyes. We found a 3.5% Benzoyl Peroxide cream at a local pharmacy. The directions on this product say to apply and then remove (rinse with water). Is rinsing necessary or are you supposed to leave the gel on? Would there be some other ingredient to watch out for that would require rinsing of this particular product?

He is a standard poodle. He started smelling really bad and scratching ALL the time. I found no fleas.. At a loss I thought maybe he had pyoderma since he had all of these sores on his elbows, stomach, abdomen, hind legs etc.... I took 10% benzoyl peroxide and mixed it with hydrocortizone cream and applied twice a day, after I shaved all these areas. Yes he looked funny. Lol. It cured his mange but irritated his skin.I took him to the vet and the vet said no, it's not mange and gave him a steroid shot calling it allergies... Well it took away the last of the redness and he was better, but I started him on revolution to be sure. A few weeks later though I broke out... Yep, I caught mange from the dog because I did all his grooming etc... Myself... I am almost completely healed with just a few spots lingering but not very itchy. I am positive he had mange due to me catching it. None of my kids nor my spouse had a single bite. I assume I have no more live mites on me or my hunny would be affected as well. Lol When a vet says allergies... Be suspious and benzoyl peroxide will work!!! I seen it first hand. Oh, so will clove oil. There is even a published study in it."

Give the dog a haircut so his fur is 1/2 inch. Mix 8 ounce bottle of 10% benzoyl peroxide (People) facial cleanser with 16-20 ounce bottle of dog shampoo. This will do for several baths. BENZOYL PEROXIDE BLEACHES JUST LIKE HYDROGEN PEROXIDE.
Use 'dog' towels and blankets and remove the nice bathroom rug. Wear old clothes. Wet dog completely. Drain bathtub. Lather dog with a generous amount of benzoyl peroxide shampoo mix for 10 minutes. Give dog a shower for 10 minutes to rinse very carefully. Benzoyl peroxide opens the pores-- mites live in the pores. Keep dog in tub. Add 1/4 cup neem oil to gallon of warm water in a bucket. If the dog is small and you can find a container that he fits in, do that inside of bathtub. Soak him for 5 minutes, massage well several times and he's done. For medium to large dog, put each foot in bucket and massage solution into dog's leg. Use a cup to pour over dog repeatedly trying to save as much as possible in bucket to reuse. Massage into the entire dog. Be careful of eyes. Use a sponge for the belly and face. Wash 5-10 minutes, depending on how big the dog is. Do not rinse off. Do not towel off. When he stops dripping, wrap him in a blanket and stick him in his kennel or a small warm spot. Keep dog warm until dry. All his pores are open; he could take a terrible chill. Bathe every week. He can have baths twice a week instead if it is really bad. Every 2-3 days, rub neem oil on afflicted areas, more often if he won't stop chewing. It doesn't matter if he licks it off after a few minutes. They make neem oil pills. My dog also gets the skin yeast infections dogs can get with demodex so we had to soak him in vinegar. No soap, no scrubbing, just soak good. He has a wading pool. We always add a gallon of vinegar to it. He soaks himself in it and that cures his yeast."

My pug had demodectic mange. It was just hair loss, but in several spots and his chin and neck were almost bare. I took him to the vet and he recommended promaris flea/tick medicine. I used this product three months(three applications). I also bought benzoyl peroxide (acne cream) and rubbed on the spots once a day for about 3 weeks. I started giving him omega 3 gel caps once per day and I started him on ___Natural Choice chicken, oatmeal and rice puppy food. He's completely cured. I don't know which part contributed the most, I just know his hair has completly grown back and he is so healthy and active. I hope this helps someone, cause it took hours of searching for me to decide what to do with my little pug!"

after reading such positive feedback on this website for the above treatment for demodex mange. I decided to apply this on my 2 year old femal pitbul who had lost all her hair on her muzzle, around the eyes and was no longer responding to ivomec, lime sulphur dips. I tried amitraz once on her and she did not react well to is, so you can imagine my excitement to find the borax h2o2 cure. I did the dip as advised however the next day my dog's entire face was 5 times its original size and she was oozing blood from her eyelids, ears, muzzle.
She had such a bad reaction to this treatment that I would like to warn anyone new who would be tempted to try this. No wonder we never hear about this treatment anywhere else except this particular website. I would discourage people from trying treatments like I did without my vet's approval. The first thing I did was to give her a bath and make sure that the deadly mixture was out of her fur and body as much as possible. I then rushed her to the vet where she is being treated but she looks bad. If I could post a photograph of her on this site, you would know the before and after."

Right now the worst part is her muzzle which has no hair and bleeds excessively if the dog is in stress. Other than that she has lost most of her hair on her under belly as well as on her legs. I have been struggling to find a cure for her since the last 4 months since her condition triggered as she went into heat in early May. Before that she had a few hot spots but since May she has had major issues. I started her on lime sulphur dips and they helped to control the mange on her body however since I applied the solution sparingly on her face , therefore that was the part that suffered the worst and lost all its hair. The vets in this country kept experimenting with various medicines including anti fungal tablets, ivermectin shots ( she has received 3 of those with only momentary difference ). She's been on antibiotics. Has had her food changed to check for food allergies. However in the end it has been determined that she is suffering from demodex even though the skin scrapings were negative. The vets dont trust the labs here. I read Ted's post and decided to try the borax and hydrogen peroxide solution. It so happened that after 24 hours of administrating this , her symptoms got so worse that I got scared and just gave her a bath and applied the lime sulphur dip. her face was totally swollen and so was her ear, the borax hydrogen peroxide had actually exascerbated the situation and made me get scared that Ihad to wash out the solution.
I am wondering if anyone else had a similar reacation. I used 3 tbs of borax powder in 500cc 3% h2O2 and 1000cc water.
Can anyone suggest what needs to be done next? I have tried one amitraz dip previously which also made her skin situation get worse and I discontinued.
I thought the borax h2o2 was safe. Then why did this happen. Please advise"

I found this site and tried the vegetable oil and borax bath. I applied vegetable oil all over the spots on my dog. I crated my dog for 6 hours while leaving the oil on her. I then gave her a bath in borax laundry detergent. My dog is now cured, no more scratching , no more hair loss, her coat is now shiny. Please give this a try to cure your dog. Happy with the results. Some vinegars are made from a petroleum base. Read the label and be sure that it states it's made from grain alcohol. Otherwise this is a great atricle. :)"
