PROBIOTICS FOR YEAST INFECTIONS

06/27/2008: Bret from Phoenix, Arizona writes: "Anybody: I have always had a question about vaginal yeast and probiotics. I had a doctor in an infirmary at a girl's correctional facility who prescribed yogurt every time a youth was placed on antibiotics. Now, I know eating floral bacteria replaces intestinal bacteria, but can someone explain to me how bacteria can start in the digestive tract and end up in the vagina."

04/19/2009: Taylor from Boise, Idaho replies: "I have read that instead of eating yogurt you actually insert it into your vagina. One way to do this is by getting a rubber glove and filling the fingers with plain yogurt, then freezing the glove. You remove one of the yogurt molds from the glove and just insert it into your vagina. You are supposed to continue this for several days until the side effects begin to subside."

08/20/2009: Anng from Bolingbrook, Il replies: "It works faster than yeast cream. It's best to have an old quality applicator. Not a cheap one. You suck it through the applicator to the top then insert it. Make sure you wear a mini pad though. You will ha ve to do it a few times, and I also recommend an inexpensive cream. But for fast relief, plain yogurt...no fruit, no low fat. Enjoy~"

GARLIC SUPPLEMENT QUESTION

04/18/2008: Kelly from Cleveland, Ohio writes: "I have bought some garlic supplements to take. I also wanted to try inserting one directly into my vagina at bedtime, but I am worried about doing this, because the capsules I bought contain peppermint oil in their coating. Will this cause any problems for me? I'm hoping that my taking garlic and a good probiotic (25 billion good bacteria), drinking lots of water and being on the almost-no-sugar diet I'm on now will clear this up for me. Over the counter meds have not really worked for me in the long-term, only the short-term, so I want to clear this up, once and for all. Any extra advice about the garlic is appreciated! Oh, and just to be extra pesky and ask a question...why are people saying NOT to use baking soda for yeast? Bicarbonate soda is used in septic tanks and pool treating to raise pH (read: increase ALKALINITY, not acidity). I thought yeast overgrowth within the vagina was cause by over-acidity. Do I have this all wrong? Thanks to anyone who replies to this. :)"

04/19/2008: Molly from Madison, USA replies: "ANSWER to Kelly, 4/18/08 re: garlic & candida. No, it seems very inadvisable to use peppermint oil, but here is an article with many home remedies for yeast infections, and they are very well explained:

RECURRING YEAST INFECTIONS

09/27/2007: S writes: "Ted, I am a 34 year old mother that has had reoccurring yeast infections for the past year, every month 5 to 7 days prior to my menstrual period a yeast infection develops. My physician says my Ph balance is off and I need to work on getting that in order with my diet. Due you think the Apple Cider Vinegar remedy will help me in this case and if not, what?"

Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Apple cider vinegar may help in some cases, actually more like through the use of douches.

But I think trying to get a normal nutritional pH balance is more important. A normal pH balance can be supplemented so that the urinary pH is within normal parameters. Take for instance, a lime and baking soda remedy where 2 tablespoon of lime juice plus 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda in 1/2 glass of water taken twice a day, will normalize or reduce the excess serum calcium, and will allow a more generalized pH balance overall. Apparently yeast growth is more apparent whenever serum calcium is higher than usual.

The most common remedies other people use seems to be the use of douches, such as boric acid, gentian violet, yogurt, potassium sorbate, hydrogen peroxide (one teaspoon H2O2 3% in one glass of water as douche), potassium sorbate (3-4% solution) and cranberries. Most interesting is that apple cider vinegar can be combined with cranberries. However that philosophy involved killing the yeast. But killing them is not a way to resolve recurring yeast problems.

A good example to draw parallels involve ants in my house around the kitchen area. I can kill them with bug sprays forever and the queen ant don't seem to care - as the biology of reproduction of mother nature reigns supreme . As long as there are food to be supplied, mother nature will produce all the ants needed and produce more of those ants coming back again and again. I can go on killing them forever, and the ants will just attack my kitchen forever. The real issue is to remove its food source, and the ants are no longer there. So I guess it's simple human laziness as opposed to rocket science in washing dishes here. However in a biological system, you just simply can't withdraw food source entirely, and mother nature uses a different mechanism where normal bacteria flora are kept in equilibrium or within normal parameters, what scientist called symbiosis. A yeast outgrowth will only occur whenever the nutrients in our system, not just the pH are off the normal parameters. Hence, it should be noted that nearly everyone has yeast present in their body only that their growth are kept in check through mother nature's equilibrium. An equilbrium can only be achieved if nutrtion and other parameters are within normal range. It is acheiving this equilibrium that interest me when finding a cure of yeast infections where a recurring yeast infection can't happen. What that is depends on its occurence.

It is well known that a woman will have yeast infection after her pregnancy, it is quite worse if it happens during her pregancy and a vitamin deficiency can deform a baby through a deficiency. So a yeast infection is mother nature gentle warning of a deficiency of an impending child's development in the womb. The most common deficiency of mothers tend to be the sudden deficiency in the water soluble vitamins, in particular is the vitamin C (usually sodium ascorbate insufficient might lead to miscarriage) and vitamin B complex, but also trace micronutrients, as well as acidosis typical during term pregnancy. Water soluble vitamins are unique - the body can't store them and they get depleted fairly quickly. It is the same with electrolytes in maintaining the sensitive sodium, potassium, and magnesium without excess calcium, in a specific ratio and levels. Bicarbonates deficiency occurs relatively quickly and unrecognized since the body can't store that very well either. Of course, all this sounds complicated, but it boils down really to a simple remedy if I understand what other factors keeps the yeast infection growth in check as a clue.

One major vitamin I have narrowed down, is the niacinamide vitamin B3, usually taken at about 300 mg/day has usually resulted in 50% reduction in yeast infection on the first dose, and the resulting doses, on the third or fourth day nearly all the yeast infection goes away and never came back, provided of course the body has sufficient vitamin B3 maintenance dose without causing a deficiency. The reason why is that yeasts have a gene called SIR 2 mechanism whereby the niacinamide induces early death of the yeast cells and hence keep their growth in check and stays within normal biological parameters and ideal symbiosis. If I am looking for that one single bullet it has got to be that niacinamide B3. No need for antibiotics when deficiency is indicated. There is even no need to worry about biological resistance to antibiotic either. The yeast have existed along with human evolution for billions of years and have become part of the normal flora, but if they are not, then nutrition imbalance are indicated. To keep niacinamide B3 not within the excess, assuming some people were to take it only 5 days out of a week, a twice weekly (say on 3rd and 5th day) of vitamin B complex where B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B8 are 100 mg each, and B12 are 100 mcg.

Once the condition has reduced, then the dose can be pared off, but not completely while maintaining perhaps much later, a once a week or twice a week dose of B3 plus B complex. It SHOULD BE noted that B12 cyanocobalamin is a cobalt and the B12 is also important because cobalt also has anti-fungal properties on that cobalt element too. Hence a B3 and a B12, appears important factor, but the body's ability to handle glucose from the B1 thiamine and B3 are just as important too, and a one tablespoon a day of granulated lecithin can also maintain blood glucose to be stable too. Too high of a blood sugar glucose can also cause candida overgrowth just the same. It is therefore important that all sugar, and mostly oily and fatty foods be avoided whenever a candida becomes a major problem too.

Perhaps I am being too simplistic, just narrowing down the Niacinamide B3, but there are others that are also helpful too. Yeast generally can grow unabated if copper are low, free metal iron (free radicals!) are high, molybdenum levels are low, iodine levels are low, and electrolytic imbalances, and the body's acidosis occur too. Hence, copper from cocoa (no sugar), drinking green tea (without milk and sugar) to reduce the free metal iron, and eating kelp and use iodine tincture drops as a mouthwash can raise the iodine levels. The lime and baking soda remedy will normalize the excess calcium levels, discouraging the yeast growth, normalizing acidosis, optimizes the body's ability to manage pH differences in the body. Drinking some 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt in one liter of drinking water should help maintaion some normal electrolytes and microminerals too.

Therefore to prevent recurring yeast infection, it is nutrition, especially B3 and vitamin B complex which is the most important. Mineral and electrolytes mentioned should also be considered. This is not just a theory, it has worked quite well to such an extent that it has worked much better than boric acid, and all other common remedies, and yet most people now don't even know that yeast infection can be controlled through simple vitamins. Certain cases of allergies, eczema and mycoplasma, hence a B3 mght also be helpful too."

11/03/2009: London from Sandusky, Ohio replies: "Ted is right!! Yeast infection are caused by a vitamin defiency. Ever since I became sexually active I have struggled with reocurring yeast and vaginal infections, so much so it impaired my sex life, it was awful. But then, I read on here about the benefits of Folic Acid and Vitamin E.

Ever since I have taking those 2 supplements, I have been yeat free, which is unheard of for me. I can have sex as often and as many times as I want like normal people, without fear of getting a yeast infection after.

Who would have thought it was a simple vitamin defiency.

Sometimes I get mild ones, but they don't last long, they go away after a few days, and the symptoms are no where near as severe and uncomfortable as they were when I wasn't on the supplements."

HOW INGESTING YOGURT HELPS

07/14/2007: Kate writes: "i understand how yogurt helps in BV and yeast infections, because it helps to balance the acidity of the vaginal bacterial flora. it makes sense that if one is suffering from these ailments, that one should apply plain (unsugared) yogurt to the vagina. what i don't understand is how ingesting yogurt helps. simply, how does the yogurt get from the stomach to the vagina? perhaps this is a ridiculous question, but to me, it doesn't make sense that one would eat yogurt to cure a yeast infection rather than apply it to the infected area. thanks very much for your time!"

Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Dear Kate: Eating might help, applying to infection area brings more immediate results, but the underlying blood terrain still makes it favorable to yeast growth as yeast growth tend to grow faster whenever the the body is slightly acidic. Too acidic a yeast cannot grow, too alkaline it cannot grow either, but alkalinity is more effective in the long run when there is blood terrain to consider, and it is easier in practice to use acidic yogurt to apply them locally.

The yogurt does so by helping reduce the constipation, and normalizes intestinal flora in the short run, thus reducing the bacterial toxin buildup. It is the lactic acid component that has some anti yeast or anti fungal properties that does get to the vagina area from eating lactic acid rich foods. However, lactic acidosis and high lactic acid do have toxicity to healthy cells, and athletes do the best to this avoid or reduce this serious problem.

Therefore to reduce yeast infections I would much prefer the 1/2 teaspoon of bakng soda with 8 teaspoon of freshly squeezed lime or lemon juice in 1/2 glass of water taken two times a day, once in the morning and once before bedtime. Taking this has a weak laxative effect reducing toxic buildup.

The alkalizing effects also reduces the body of constipation, normalizes intestinal floral by normalizing the pH environment in the intestines helping growth of favorable intestinal flora.

The yeast also have trouble growing whenever the body's serum level is more alkalizing also. There are many other reasons, besides this, for example, if the body is more alkalizing the capillaries on the skin dilate and the body can rid of toxins faster, and increases of immunity occurs whenever toxins in the body are reduced.

Alkalizing also generates free ammonia inside the body which is strongly antifungal. Therefore, one possibility is to take plenty of baking soda and lemon/lime and eat plenty of fish - baked fish if at all possible, never a fried one.

The high protein fish breaks down into amino acids (such as soy sauce) and the alkalizing effects of baking soda creates free ammonia compound, killing the yeast cells in the process.

Now my observations are rather limited but I do think eating fishes and alkalizing is one way of reducing yeast infection, at least those who do it don't seem to have them.

In general, a topical application of yogurt, or just plain white distilled vinegar in the area can also reduced localized problem, but overall alkalizing the body will have a more larger area effect of the body when used in combination."

SYMPTOMS OF YEAST INFECTION

11/25/2006: Amanda writes: "I actually have a question. Ok i thought i had a yeast infection and i went to the doctor and got medication but it only worked for like a week then came back! I don't have itching, it's just there is an odor and i have white clumpy stuff that comes out and also i do have abdominal pains when having intercourse. Do you think this is a yeast infection and if so what can i do to get rid of it efficiently and prevent it from coming back? Please help! Thanks"

Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Dear Amanda: It is my observation that vinegar or weak solution of vinegar (50% water and 50% distilled water) cleaning externally and internally will help remove the odor. In the long run, however, alkalizing your pH will raise your immune system and this may help prevent such problems. Take baking soda 1/4 teaspoon + 1/4 citric acid taken twice a day for a couple of days out of a week. '

Sometimes the immune system is weak and the odor can be an indicator. In this case taking some zinc acetate/zinc citrate supplements maybe once a week or twice a week 25 mg. would help too."

TREATMENT FOR YEAST INFECTION ON TONGUE

10/14/2006: Rony writes: "I have yeast infection on my tongue and I have a thrush in my esophagus and in my intestine , too. so the doctor said to take Nystatin. Nystatine didn't cure any of my problems. Please tell me if you can think of any treatment for my problems."

Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "A yeast infection and thrush of esophagus and intestines appear to be spreading. Taking plenty of zinc acetate (or zinc chloride) at 50 mg/day, plus 25 mg of sodium molybdate, and 6-12 drops of 3% hydrogen peroxide per glass of water should help reduce your thrush/yeast infection. Add sea salt 1/4 teaspoon per liter of water, and take some 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda and 1/4 teaspoon of citric acid to 1/2 glass of water, will help raise the oxygen and immune system to fight this off also. Should be taken at least twice, once before bedtime and once in the morning. There are many other remedies depending on the causes and conditions. The more information I have from you the better. "

06/25/2008: Uvernona from Dover, USA replies: "I had a budding yeast infection in my personal area that doctors couldn't detect until I went yesterday. My doctor literally "painted" me with Gentian Violet and it really worked! The only downside to it, it stains clothes. It's been used for thrush in babies and adults, on nursing mothers, as well as on burns, cuts, and etc. If the infection is caused by yeast, you can use it there! It's hard to come by, but you can get it at www.walgreens.com You can try to have your local pharmacy to order it for you. I don't recommend you using it "inside" your personal area yourself. I'd recommend you asking your doctor to do it for you. Other than that, it's GREAT!"

YEAST INFECTION SINCE FIRST PREGNANCY

08/25/2006: Lisa from FL writes: "I have been dealing with yeast infections since my first pregnancy, 14 years ago. I also remember as a child having one. I have seen specialists, my gyno, I feel no one can help me and they are exhausted with my condition. I even had a Dr. tell me. there is nothing else I can do for you. I tried Depo, monistat, yogurt, Diflucan, which used to temp. work until now. I get a yeast infection every month about a week after I start my period and it lasts until I am about ready to start my next period. This has been the pattern now for about four months and prior to that I would get them about 5-6 times a year. I have recently took almost all sugars out of my diet and started garlic, vitamin C, and adicophilus tablets. I have read so much about Candida that I myself am exhausted mentally and physically. Needless to say my sex life is practically non existent. So far I don't know if these pills are working I have only taken them for two days. I would like to try some of the recommendations on this site. I just don't know which one to try. Everyone has their own opinion and experience. Any recommendations would be so helpful. I am putting off calling my Dr. for now. I just saw him last week and he pres. me fluconazole. I have taken two pills since then and still have symptoms, not as bad as before, but still irritated."

Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Lisa: Most alternative medicine, which are basically holistic, the use of natural therapies tend to be synergistic as opposed to antagonistic as most pharmaceutical drugs are.

Taking together plenty of garlic oil, selenium, zinc, and vitamin B complex will be your best approach instead of trying them individually. These supplements work together like a soccer team, instead of like an individual marathon competition.

One additional complement to the candida issue is to take 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda plus 1/4 teaspoon of citric acid in 1/2 glass of water taken twice a day once in the morning and evening to balance out your pH making it unfavorable for candida to grow if your urinary pH is reaches near 6.5-7.35.

Other people who do have successes are such as these: http://www.ithyroid.com/candida.htm

"Following this and supplementation with zinc and selenium, my candida and hypoT both ended."

"Selenium deficiency and anemia appear to be the biggest factors in promoting candida growth. Years ago when I had hypoT I also had a severe candida infection. I found a book titled "Candida: Silver (Mercury) Fillings and the Immune System" which eventually led me to getting my mercury fillings removed. Following this and supplementation with zinc and selenium, my candida and hypoT both ended.

Experiments with animals show that candida growth can be increased by selenium deprivation and reduced by selenium supplementation. Since mercury depletes selenium, it makes sense that candida is higher when there are mercury fillings in the teeth.

Other studies show that anemia and iron deficiency increase candida growth. There are some studies suggesting that B12 and folic acid deficiencies may be involved in candida, since deficiencies of these lead to anemia. In anemia and iron deficiency friendly bacteria cannot grow well in the body. A lack of these bacteria probably is a key factor which promotes candida growth, since candida is a fungal growth rather than a bacteria growth. "

To make it work better in pharmaceutical they call it "cocktails" where a combination of drugs worked more effectively than any individual drugs. Food would also taste bad if you only eat one individual food and it will also cause you to be deficient in many vitamins and minerals if that is done."
