JUICING

[YEA]  05/13/2009: Deirdre from Atlanta, GA writes: "Found an incredible juicing recipe in a book called The Raw Food Detox Diet by Natalia Rose . It's called green lemonade and yes, it really does taste like lemonade! I've been drinking at least one glass of this a day for 7 days and it has curbed my appetite like no tomorrow. I do a lot of exercise every day am usually starving afterwards, but not so if I drink this beforehand. It's amazing. I have made it for 3 friends and everyone loves it. The first thing my husband noticed (on me) was glowing, soft skin. First thing I noticed beside the appetite suppressant was increased energy.

Here's the recipe from the book:

1 head romaine lettuce or celery
5 to 6 stalks kale
1 to 2 apples
1 whole organic lemon (don't peel it)
1 to 2 inches fresh ginger (optional)

Juice all ingredients. For best results, drink on an empty stomach. Not a good idea to drink with meals according to the author. You can use any greens in place of romaine and kale. Important thing is to have dark leafy greens.

Highly recommend this book, by the way. Simply prepared "quick-exit" foods. Great philosophy."

05/22/2009: Deirdre from Atlanta, GA replies: "I've just finished 14 days of juicing at least once a day. I recently discovered chunks of fresh turmeric at the international market nearby and have been adding this to the drink when I can remember to. The drink is very energizing and great for the skin. As far as weight loss, slowly but surely. Additional exercise has really been the key for me, but this drink has indeed been a great appetite suppressant and removed sugar cravings.

Best green lemonade combinations:
1. Celery, Romaine, Ginger, Lemon, Granny Smith
2. Kale, Romaine, Ginger, Lemon, Fuji apple
3. Spinach, Red Lettuce, Ginger, Lemon, Granny Smith

Collard greens - extremely bitter, beware! Causes nausea that lasts several hours, despite the lemon juice and ginger."

[YEA]  05/09/2009: Gabriela from Pahoa, HI writes: "Juice fasting for losing weight:

I go on a month-long juice fast every 2 or 3 years or whenever needed. This last time I went for 40 days. I didn't have a hard time apart from the very first day. Only on this day did I feel really bad. All the other days I felt rather good or even euphoric. I did drink fresh fruit juices, mostly in the first part of the fast grapefruit-orange juice (as it was available in our garden) and later added vegetable juices. I also made a rather large vegetable broth from a bowl of veggies including kelp and nutritional yeast. This made a wonderful hot alkaline drink. After I lost a lot of fat, I desired the nutrients of vegetable juices and included a lot of "green drinks". I haven't looked at my weight but I lost all my overweight. I was also determined to overcome my compulsive overeating habits."

WARNING!

[YEA]  04/21/2007: Marc from Koloa, Hawaii writes: "I tried eating the Korean food, Kimchee after learning about it in school. It turns out that Kimchee contains a good bacteria called lactobacilli that helps the stomach the same way ACV does. It is also considered as one of the most healthiest food in the world by the Health Magazine. You can buy Kimchee on the Oriental section of US supermarkets. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kimchi"

05/16/2008: Eve from Pleasanton, CA replies: "I am allergic to MSG but I love Kimchee. There are MSG free versions of Kimchee available in local stores. Just be mindful to read the labels. Kimchee is definitely not a low sodium food, but the MSG free is a better option for salt content."
[YEA]  05/01/2009: Livia from Spring, Texas replies: "It is also easy to make your own Kim Chee - and much less expensive, too. Nourishing Traditions cookbook by Sally Fallon and Mary Enig, PhD have a recipe for it, and you could probably find some online, too, and in other cookbooks. Also, it is interesting to know that you can make it with or without salts and starters. A strictly therapeutic raw food version, for example, will not include any salt. Others use salt routinely as a backup safety measure, in case bad bacteria try to proliferate before the good lactobaccili really get going. You can also buy commercial starters that help jumpstart the good bacteria, too. And some recipes mix a little salt with a little starter. But it can be done successfully without any additives at all, just sayin. I've helped make it that way before, and eaten lots of it at a spa where it is a daily feature on the menu, (sauerkraut, actually, without the spices and hot produce that make it the version known as kim chee). It's all the same idea, really good for you. I met a man who cured his cancer (prostate) with a raw food diet, but he ate about a quart of sauerkraut every day, loved it. And for a 70+yo guy, he had great skin. Actually, I know women in their 40's who would wish for his skin, lol! He's had his cancer licked for many years when I met him. I learned that these fermented veggies are great detoxifiers, so it makes sense that they are good for weight loss. They also contain something that, when combined with cooked meats, turns the carcinogenic part of cooked meats into harmless and easily used amino acids. COOL!"

07/04/2010: Paula from Fayetteville, Nc replies: "I took lecithin at my doctor's request (she practices alternative medicine as well as being a licensed M.D.). I took it for panic attacks though. [YEA]  11/04/2007: Alem from Perth, Australia writes: "I have heard about lemon & Honey cures from my over 110 year old grand-grandmother in Bosnia. I was overweight as a child and after starting to drink Lemon and honey tea (juice of ½-1 lemon, little honey and warm water) every morning my whole system has changed. My weight has dropped and I never had a problem with it since. I cant remember the last time I had a cold or flue. Another thing that she told me to do was: When a person feels a cold or flue coming on, to use the juice of 3 lemons and add 5-6 big tablespoons of good honey, mix it well and drink it. I know it sounds horrible, however I can swear by it. I newer got sick."

The jeans I wore while going to the trip it doesn't fit me anymore. I am going to start ACV with water from today. Last three days I have started drinking 1/2 lemon juice with warm water in the morning and in 3 days I started loosing some inches. If I continue with lemon juice and start ACV will this interfere with each other? I am 5' tall and weight 128. My ideal weigh is 108. I have to loose 20 lbs. Thanks!"

BETTER BUT NOT CURED

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  05/26/2008: Angela from Montreal, Quebec, Canada writes: "I had about 15 atleast gallbladder attacks in 2 weeks -hospitalized one night as well and they wanted to take out the gallbladder for my "diamonds" gallstones which I'd had for 16 yrs. at least with no probs. except very sick in my 4 pregnancies because of excess bile... The attacks started due to taking digestive enzymes for 2 days and then going off them. The attacks began the next night with coleslaw, sausages, and saurkraut ..but continued for the next 2 weeks pretty much whatever I ate. In my worst attack I practically crawled to the computer to earthclinic.com. The 1/2 cup lettuce cure came up with 2 yeas. Sent son running to store for it and 20 mins. later after eating the 1/2 c. I had complete relief. As one writer speculated that it stimulated the liver to produce digestive enzymes that would stop the body from calling on the gallbladder to produce digestive bile.. So for the next 24 hrs. I ate nothing but iceberg lettuce -lots of it - and slices of organic apple. The next day I tried out eating whatever I wanted which had caused attacks throughout the prev. 2 wks. (except the cabbage/sausages -bad memory!) Even McDonald's failed to give me an attack. I am so thrilled with this cure of course!

Hearing once recently that digestive enz help people lose a lot of weight, I wonder if the stimulation of the liver a couple times a day with particularly iceberg lettuce (as it's supposed to work the best rather than other lettuces) would be a natural weight loss cure as well? I know it seems to make less of the slight puff around my ankles -more definition. So it might also help with fluid retention. As well my new pretty set wrinkles of 6 mos. ago have almost completely disappeared within a few days of ingesting 3x per day atleast (vertical ones beneath my eyes -not the crow's feet). Try it and I'd love to hear your feedback as I'm a personal trainer and would love to see if it helps people lose weight -at least it brings down the glycemic index of each meal you eat it with some."

LIVER CLEANSE

YEA

[YEA]  07/30/2005: Stephen from VA writes: "Here is a natural cure for losing weight. "LIVER CLEANSE". All the drugs, in my opinion, diet pills, and FAD DIETS you've TRIED your whole life has caused excessive toxic build up in your liver, thus causing your metabolism to slow down, because the food isn't being digested properly as it should (kinda like a traffic jam). After using a liver cleanse, eat a 80% raw diet. Meaning most of your foods should be in their natural organic state, plenty of fruits, veggies, natural oatmeal, water(not tap water),and other foods that don't come in boxes. Stay away from boxed foods. Food isn't the number one problem causing obesity, in my opinion, it's what THEY put in the food that makes you fat (so they can make more money). When you look back at the 1950's or 60's and when you would go to the beach and everyone was pretty much in great shape, now there are more fat people than ever before. All of the huge food companies,in my opinion, put food additives and chemicals to make food taste sweet, when in reality they can cause chemical (toxic) build up in your body-which later on leads to many other health problems. Oh and, if you tried this and have NOT lost any weight check your thyroid, that could be a HUGE problem also. Thank you"

WORKED TEMPORARILY

WARNING!

[WARNING!]  04/05/2011: Kelly from Bellingham, Wa, Us writes: "I just wanted to share my experience with the Master Cleanse. I did it 2 years ago. The first 4 days were great and I was feeling wonderful, the 5th day not so much. I started going down hill on the 5th day and on the 6th day I landed in the hospital on the Cardiac floor. I did everything exactly like the diet said. I am in the medical field, so I do understand how PH works etc. Mine, incidentally, was 7. 11 at the time I was admitted. This is extremely acidic! The ER Physician, told my son, "If you hadn't have brought your mother in this evening, she wouldn't have been around in the morning".

They actually thought I drank "antifreeze" because the only time they had seen a human poisoned in this way was with that type of poisoning. It took me 2 days to convince them that, I had only been on the Master Cleanse and nothing else!!! They thought I had tried to commit suicide!!!

My heart went into arrythmias and was 173 while I was laying down in the ER.

My symptoms started with feeling queasy the evening of the 5th day after starting the cleanse, to throwing up repeatedly throughout the morning of the 6th, and profuse diarrhea. I got so weak I couldn't walk or hold my head up. My son found me on the floor barely conscious.

I just want people to see the other side of this "cleanse". It washes your electrolytes out FAST. I was only 42 years old when I did this, and in good health. I wanted to try it to "detox".

PLEASE BE CAREFUL! If my son didn't find me when he did, I know I wouldn't be alive now. I've been in the medical field for 21 years, so if it can happen to me, it can happen to anyone. I also met a nurse in Eastern Wa who told me a woman had died several years ago from this cleanse. For her.. it was too late.

I AM AMAZED THAT PEOPLE ARE ABLE TO SUSTAIN THIS FOR WEEKS ON END!!! THEY ARE PLAYING WITH FIRE!"

05/21/2011: Vicki from Austin, Texas replies: "I'm confused about your remark about the ph of 7.11. A ph of 7 is neutral, and anything above 7 is moving toward "basic" not acidic."
06/21/2011: Bryana from Ithaca, New York replies: "Normal human blood pH is 7.35-7.45. Therefore 7.11 is too acidic. Our blood is slightly alkaline."
[NAY]  08/01/2011: M21 from Vancouver, Bc replies: "My experience wasn't that severe, but I had a really bad experience with master cleanse too. I got so weak, my whole body was shaking, I was sick like never in my life. Maybe those are detox symptoms, but such detox is way to hard on the body, I think. There is simply no quick fix, balance is the key."
10/06/2011: Van from Sunnyvale, Ca, Usa replies: "Errrmmm...I have a natural PH of 6.25-6.5 and I NEVER had any major issues. Rarely get sick. My skin is perfect too. All my medical test pass flying colors. Healthy as a horse. So 7.11 is not too acidic and that is not the issue.

Perhaps there was issues with the source of your water or lemons. I am wondering if you used organic lemons or the cheap kind or had any household chemicals laying around. Like the lemon might have fallen on the floor, table, etc, etc. Might of been a chemical reaction with something else inside your body.

I had a friend who did the lemon cleanse and lost 20lbs in one month. No health issues. I personally don't like to side on extremes. South beach works for me."

10/06/2011: Van from Sunnyvale, Ca, Usa replies: "Also, if your Master Cleanse consists of chemicals like Borax I wouldn't recommend it because there is food grade and household uses grade which is dangerous according to my materials data sheet.

The master cleanse I know is just water (not distilled), organic lemons, cayenne peppers and maple syrup."

02/04/2012: Kelly from Bellingham, Wa replies: "I just thought I'd check back and see if there were any responses to my "nay" on the master cleanse. There are a couple of people who are confused, and I forget, not everyone is medical minded, and I should have stated my PH was NOT my urine PH. A normal urine Ph CAN be anywhere from 4.8 to 8. That is correct. However, the Ph I was referring to was my ABG results. An ABG is an arterial blood gas. Blood is drawn directly from your artery. 7.11 is dangerously low for a Ph and I scared alot of people that night, not only at the hospital but my family members :-(. Frequently, a person with a Ph of less then 7. 20 (arterial) is a strong candidate for a ventilator (a machine that breathes for you)... So 7.11 REALLY did freak some people out, including myself. Also, I DID use ALL organic lemons, maple syrup, distilled water etc. This diet is just NOT for everyone. Please be careful!"

05/20/2010: Joyful from Memphis, Tn, Usa writes: "I was eager to start the Master Cleanse (recipe I used to follow) after doing much research. However, a question arises: is it okay to replace a meal or two with the Master Cleanse instead of doing ONLY the Master Cleanse throughout the day? For example, I did the Master Cleanse drink for breakfast and lunch, but by mid/late afternoon I was ravenous (but not shaky or irritable) so I ate some protein. For dinner I ate a large salad with a lean protein. I'm on the 3rd day of doing this protocol and I'm curious what others think. Thanks in advance!

RECIPE:
10 oz steam-distilled water
2 tbsp lemon juice (freshly squeezed)
1 tbsp BSM
1/10 cayenne powder
1 tbsp raw ACV
1 tbsp raw honey
pinch of borax
dash of ginger
dash of (real) cinnamon"

He advocats liquid meals for breakfast and dinner, and solid food (no sauces or anything though - for example today I'm having salmon grilled with VCO, sauteed broccoli rabe and arugula salad). I'm enjoying it, and feeling really great - and it's easy to maintain because you do eat some real food. The rational for having a liquid meal at night (a blended raw soup - last night was zuchinni, celery, basil, avocado and a little olive oil and sea salt) is that if you leave at least 12 hour window for digestion the body kicks into detox mode - which is why the last meal is very light. SO! I'm sure you could master cleanse and eat a little too - so long as you follow clean eating guidelines - it might just take a little longer."

[YEA]  07/29/2009: Rob from Indianapolis, Indiana writes: "Master Cleanse (1/2 lemon, 2 tablespoons Grade B Maple Syrup and a little Cayenne)

I followed the Master Cleanse for 7 days. I did for both detox and weight loss. The weight came off rapidly, I lost 14 lbs over 7 days. I hadn't been able to lose more than 3-4 lbs during several previous attempts with restricting calories and working out.

I took one day with no food and just orange juice to come off, but the second day I started eating, especially at night. I would think the longer you go the more you need to follow the 3 days to get off program.

I would advise anyone to take a laxative. I didn't the first couple days and when I started the first couple days weren't pleasant. After that it became pain free. I would be more than willing to go back on in the future. Overcoming the psychological hurdle to only drink lemonade was hard. It was also a bit annoying to keep making the same concoction several times a day everyday.

best wishes"

[YEA]  07/30/2009: Eve K from Houston, Tx replies: "The lemonade can be consumed all day long, hot or cold. It is important to do the right ratios. Followed properly, the lemonade should deliver about 1200 calories per day and adequate nutrients/electrolytes to sustain normal activities. Get the book or read the official website, you will want to do the salt cleanse in the morning and take a laxative tea in the evenings. Personally I think the lemonade is delicious hot."
08/12/2009: Rob from Indianapolis, In replies: "I drank the lemon juice throughout the day. I usually left the pulp in too. I think I had as many as 11 glasses in one day.

It still was difficult to keep making the lemonade to keep up with my hunger. I wish there was someway to make a gallon at a time, but when I left some in the fridge in a bottled water container it was completely disgusting and undrinkable."
08/14/2009: Maureen from Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada replies: "Hi Rob, I have been making the Master Cleanse Lemonade for the past 10 years since going on a version of the cleanse. However, I still make the lemonade regulary as I like it. I make a 4 quart batch using 12 lemons and keep it in the fridge for two weeks or more. I strain the lemonade three times (until it flows through the strainer without any hint of pulp) and also I do not add cayenne pepper. When I feel like taking the cayenne pepper I add it to the individual glass. So maybe by not straining the lemonade and if you add the cayenne pepper up front, it affects the shelf life. I hope this helps you. Maureen"
08/14/2009: P from South America replies: "I have been doing fasts or modified diets like the MC for about 4 years now, once or twice a year. I highly advise people against doing it for weight loss reasons, unless it is followed and an improved diet change. You will get the weight back and ti could come with a vengeance. I think it could lead to other eating disorders too, who knows.

I have done MCs ranging from 7 to 21 days, strictly by the book and following the rules. The weight does come off (and a BUNCH of other nasty stuff too, if you have been there you know what I mean). I do it for health maintenance reasons, and follow it by a strictly vegetarian diet for about a month, then go back to my normal diet where everything is ok in moderation. It's an amazing experience.

Last time I fasted on water only and nothing more. You don't get the energy levels you get with the MC, but I found I was hungry less. It was easier, and more practical than making juice all day!"
08/15/2009: Kyra from Cortlandt Manor, New York, Usa replies: "You can not receive the full health benefits of the Master Cleanse Lemonade if you eliminate the pulp. We are supposed to eat our fruit not drink it, when you juice fruits and vegetables u take away vital nutrients and fiber, so in the case of a liquid fast, it is important to get as much of the fruit as possible."

[YEA]  03/09/2009: Felicia from New Rochelle, New York, USA writes: "I've used the Master Cleanser ("MC") for the past 5 years at least 3 or 4 times each year. I personally think this is by far the BEST cleansing fast I've ever tried. I highly recommend reading the entire "MC" booklet before trying the cleanse. It contains a wealth of information that should NOT be carelessly overlooked.

During the 5 years I've done the fast (always, the recommended 10 days), along with propper diet and exercise changes, I lost approximately 75lbs. I do agree, that the "MC" should not be used as a weight-loss regimine alone, but with propper diet and exercise, I feel it is an excellent way to maintain good health. I'm 46 years old, and thanks to this fast and the changes I've made in lifestyle re diet and exercise, I've been able to maintain the majority of my weight loss.

PS: You don't need to add the Cayenne pepper if you don't want to, but it aids in the removal of mucus. That's why if you have a cold, and you do the fast for 2 or 3 days, the cold will disappear immediately."

The MC is a wonderful way to clear up health issues while learing about your body and natural detox processes. You will lose some pounds, but they will most likely come back on. Just make sure you have the right intentions."

I never felt hungry. I had lots of energy so kept my schedule up no problem. I lost 15 pounds and feel really good. I would recommend this to anyone who needs change. 10 oz. good cold water 1 teaspoon maple syrup the good stuff grade A or better. 1/2 fresh squeezed lemon. Two dashes of cayenne pepper. I added two ice cubes and drank it from a straw. Thanks for this site. I love it!"

[YEA]  12/20/2007: Shaunna from Denver, Colorado writes: "I did the Master Cleanse Lemonade diet for both detoxing and weight loss. My first time out I remained on the lemonade for 21 days. I lost a total of 22 lbs and have kept it off no problem. I have done shorter periods on the lemonade and found that only going at least 21 days resulted in permanent weight loss. The first week is really just your body getting rid of water and toxins so you'll gain that weight back if you stop at just one week. The longer you can remain on the program the greater your detoxing and weight loss results will be. My eyes went from permanently bloodshot to bright white while on the lemonade. I had a ton of energy and no brain fog. One thing to note, if you suspect you may be someone with very low histamine levels this may not be for you. I have low histamine levels (histapenia) and I believe this diet lowers them ever further. I became very short tempered and testy during certain points in the fast. If you are interested look for Stanley Burroughs' book about the Master Cleanser fast"

[YEA]  12/16/2007: Sarah from Salt Lake City, Utah writes: "The Lemonade Cleanse. I lost 25 pounds. You take the juice of half a lemon, real genuine maple syrup grade A,B or C, (not the fake kind. 1/10th of a teaspoon of cayenne pepper. You mix that in with 10 oz of water. You drink this anywhere from 6 to 10 times a day. You don't eat anything else. The only other thing you want to take is an herbal lexative tea, and a salt bath. Drink the herbal lexative tea every night before you go to bed, then the salt bath every morning when you wake up. The recipe for the salt bath is 2 teaspoons of sea salt mixed in with a quart of luke warm water. Make sure to give yourself plenty of time before you leave the house, because after drinking the salt water mixture you will be going potty for about 2 hours. I'd buy the booThe Master Cleanser Book by Stanley Burroughs. This book explains the process and answers all your questions. You have to go on the diet for atleast ten days. I really gotta say, it cured my acid indigestion, depression, and all kinds of other things that were wrong with me. I'd reccommend it to anybody.

If you're diabetic you would use Molasses instead of the maple syrup. Just research it first, then go for it."

[YEA]  05/22/2006: Jessie from Knoxville, TN writes: "My Aunt Mary (who's quite heavy) and I (heavy, soon to be quite heavy if I don't do something to change things) were sitting in the emergency room waiting area waiting for news of my grandmother when this little old man leaned over and asked my aunt, "Would you like to lose some weight?" To her credit, rather than gasping, or blushing or getting affronted, Aunt Mary replied, "Absolutely." So the old man pointed to his little old wife and said, "Would you believe that she used to weight over 300 pounds?" Then the old lady took over. Apparently she'd been very heavy, but she stumbled across a weight loss secret that worked wonders for her. According to her, if you mix 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar (preferably the "light" rather than the "dark" kind -- but I've only been able to find the dark) and two tablespoons of honey in 1 quart of warm water (warm to dissolve the honey) and drink the mixture over the course of the day, the pounds just fall off. It worked for her, and for numerous friends of hers, and now she tells everyone she meets who she thinks might benefit from the info. I don't know if this works, but I'm giving it a shot -- after all, an extra quart of water per day certainly won't hurt, and ACV isn't bad for you. I'm finding the taste very unpleasant, but a few sips every hour or so is enough to get the whole quart down before the day is over. I don't know if this is easier or harder than the 2-3 tablespoons in a glass of water before meals option, but for those with irregular meal times and locations (like me), gradual consumption from a quart water bottle over the course of the day is an easy answer. We'll see if it works; in the meantime, I figured I'd give the nice old lady's advice a wider audience than a rural Missouri hospital waiting room. Fingers crossed!"

apple cider vinegar (1/2 cup),
juice of two fresh squeezed lemons,
maple syrup (to taste), and
cayenne pepper (as much as you can stand) is a great weight loss combo.....

Go on a fast for one day, only sip this "lemonade" the second day, only liquids and this lemonade the third day, chicken noodle soup and the lemonade (or cabbage soup) the fourth day -- add fresh veggies, not carrots. And the fifth day, one regular meal and the lemonade, and you can be anywhere from 10 to 15 pounds thinner, and feel great!

I used to weigh 289 pounds, I now weigh 135 pounds... and no one believes I am soon to be 47 years old... I also give my hubby the same thing, but substitute black molasses for the honey as he is pre-diabetic. Gives him instant energy and helps him digest his meals and he feels less sluggish,... I love ACV!!"

How to Make Lemonade
2 Tbsp lemon or lime juice (approx. 1/2 lemon)
2 Tbsp genuine maple syrup (not maple flavored sugar syrup)
1/10 Tsp cayenne pepper (red pepper) or to taste
Water, medium hot (spring or purified water)

Combine the juice, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper in a 10 oz. glass and fill with medium hot water. (Cold water may be used if preferred.) Use fresh lemons or limes only, never canned lemon or lime juice nor frozen lemonade or frozen juice. Use organic lemons when possible."

MULTIPLE REMEDIES TRIED

[NAY]  09/09/2010: Cara from Nyack, Ny writes: "I need to lose 20 pounds and have tried everything, exercise, dieting- nothing helps. I'll lose a few pounds then gain it back without changing anything. I have been trying the ACV (2 tbsp per 16 oz drank throughout day)that I saw on this site for about a week but have seen no change. I have also taken EV Coconut Oil (and cut fat & calories from my diet to make up for it). I am taking antidepressants and had my gall bladder removed and was wondering if either of these factors could be contributing to the inability to lose weight. I also have Epstein Barr and fibromyalgia so I have been taking vitamins as well as COQ10 & L-Carnatine for about a year just to have some energy. Any suggestions? Getting this weight off is really important to me, I'll try anything at this point. Thanks."

I have FMS, and supplements and everything else won't do me any good if I am eating foods that inflame the body. With FMS, gluten and dairy are super harmful and should be eliminated for life. Try it.. You will feel much better!"
09/11/2010: L. from Red Deer, Alberta Canada replies: "I would check the side effects of the antidepressants. I too, have been dealing with some of your health issues, including weight. For me, I had to be satisfied that I was taking a whole food diet. That means fresh perishable foods. Also, mostly just plain, loose green tea in the am, and then only water or lemon water. Recently, I've tried MMS and colodial silver, and the weight has been reducing, as well as an increase in energy. You should read up on the alkalising drink, because it's imperative to keep your PH at about 7, or 7.25. When people ask me for supplements, (I guess they see I've improved) I always tell them about raising the PH, before I tell them anything else. The body heals with a neutral (7) PH."

[QUESTION]  03/24/2009: Laure from Belleville, Ontario, Canada writes: "This is both a weight loss and health issues question.
I REALLY need your help figuring this out.

Eight yrs ago I became very ill with an extreme flu for 3.5 mths, it seemed to mutate every mth. I was given 6 day antibiotic prescriptions 1 x mth for 1st 2 mths. No medication worked.

I had previously eaten a low-carb type lifestyle diet which does contain Healthy Carbs only for 4yrs (Somersizing) with no problems. Due to being ill for so long I gained 30lbs in the 3.5mths, not like me at all. I was barely eating anything each day, sometimes going 1-3days without food. After I got better (not well), & 4mths later, I still had "0" energy & felt sick most of the time. Almost every morning since.... immediately after waking I begin coughing violently (from my stomach not chest), as if I am about to vomit. If I do vomit, its more like spit and sometimes acid (haven't had any "food" at this point). I switched to water in the morning, found this didn't help much. This continues to this day, I've found recently if I drink 2 cups of sage tea before bed it does seem to settle this down.

My doc said "my body had taken a hell of a hit, and would just take time to get over it. About 5mths". I endured the 5mths, continuing my low-carb style WOE (eating only heathly carbs 1x per day). During that 5mths I gained another 10lbs & I really have no clue how. When I went back to the doc....he just shrugged his shoulders and told me to go home and rest that it may take up to another year. I believe this was a total copout on his part. 2 yrs later he finally tested my thyroid and sugar levels & said they were fine. Refuses to test my hormone levels because he doesn't beleive in HRT's (natural or chemical). I just wanted to know where my levels were at.

I've always been one of those people who found it easy to lose weight, then I hit a phase 11 yrs ago where I gained 25lbs and couldn't take it off. I then found my low-carb style WOE (Somersizing: note we DO eat healthy carbs) & lost all the weight over 3 mths & have stayed with it since with not one problem.

It's now 8 yrs later and I'm worse not better (more fatigued), and its a struggled just to do basics everyday. And have gained another 35lbs over time. I love my low-carb type lifestyle WOE (Somersizing) and won't change that. But over the past 3.5 yrs I've noticed something weird going on. I've tried to adjust my WOE to eliminate it, but this hasn't worked either. Instant, sometimes extreme heartburn. The only things that settle it down are homemade ginger tea.....and for instant relief until the ginger is ready, I've found sipping a small amount of cream really lessens the heartburn. I've tracked down some culprits. example: my decafe coffee. I thought it was the brand so I switched brands....nothing changed. So now I can only have 1 decafe coffee every 2nd morning. I do drinks Lots of water per day, and LOTS of veggies. I sometimes get the heartburn when drinking water too. I'm assuming I must be full of acid....any ideas what could be causing all of this? Acid or other.

I've have people suggest carb blockers (but I only eat healthy carb in the morning 4x per week), I can't see where they would help.

I've tried digestive enzymes, didn't seem to do anything. Although in fairness perhaps I didn't take them long enough.

I've been wondering if my body is having difficulty breaking down proteins/fats, and need something for that????

I've now tried sooooo many different "remedies" and am at a loss. And am not rich and tired of spending $$ on what doesn't work.

Various herbal & other supplements etc.

I also tried taking CLA & borage combo and drinking sage tea.

Yes, I've been back to the doc a few times.......but he has been NO help. The most he has said is that I need to lose the weight. Refuses to get down to business regarding the other symptoms.

I don't know whether all of this is connected to my being so ill so long ago or not. Or whether each issue is connect to others or not.

I only mentioned my WOE so you'll understand that I do not eat the regular standard Canada diet, no junk foods, no fast foods, no pop etc. Just healthy foods

If you have any ideas at all they would be welcome.
I'm sorry this is soooo long, but I'm afraid I could leave out a vital clue to figuring this out.

I am desperate now.... beginning to have physical problems due to overweight and fatigue.

Ted, any help you can give me in trying to figure this out would great be appreciated."

03/25/2009: Wendy from Parksville, BC, Cananda replies: "Hi Laure:

I do not usually give advice to people, but you did not give your age in the write up. I would think that your hormones are out of whack and need balancing, in order to lose weight. I myself had gained weight, but not as much as you. Since correcting my hormones, I have lost weight and feel way better.

AS for your illness or flu, a biofeedback session might help you. I know of someone who basically gave up. Went through all tests at the doctors and could not find anything wrong. She had Diarreha for six months and was down to 80 lbs. One session of Biofeedback kiled the virus or bacteria she had and she is 100 per cent now. I believe it can get rid of candida, which is a very common problem and causes many other dieases if you are filled with the yeast. Hope this helps."
05/18/2009: Erin from Naperville, IL replies: "Your story sounds similar to mine after I got double pneumonia several years ago. I was on very strong antibiotics for about three months and then, while I still had vestiges of the pneumonia, I began picking up other strange infections like pink eye, bronchitis and a skin condition. My doctor ran tests and said that due to the infection and the pneumonia, my immune system had been compromised. Then he suggested changing my antibiotic to a different one and he said he would have to start treating me like an organ transplant patient ... which meant limiting my contact with the outside world, eating and resting as much as possible, etc. The whole time he was telling me this, my brain was shouting, "You guys did this to me! You made me sicker! There is no way I'm going to let you do anything more. You had your chance." I left his office and made an appointment with my Chinese doctor. She practices acupuncture and Chinese herbs. When I went to see her, she gave me an exam, some Chinese herbs and about an hour of acupuncture and told me to come back the following week. That night, I slept better than I had in five months. By the end of the first week, I was feeling like my old self again. My energy was coming back and I was feeling healthier and stronger. I kicked everything within a month. I should have gone to her in the first place! My advice to you is to seek out an acupuncturist and herbalist. You gave traditional medicine a chance and it didn't do much good for you. Good luck!"
05/19/2009: R from South , FL, USA replies: "Erin's suggestion is a great one. I did that years ago and it was a great help to me. Recently, I'm not having any results from it so I searched for other options. I have searched for answers to multiple issues. I too have acid reflux and struggled for a long time as I would not take the medicine that the doctor's said I had to take. Apple Cider Vinegar (with the mother on it) has allowed me to eat anything again and DRINK MY COFFEE! I started with 2 tsp with 1/8 tsp of baking soda, 3 or 4 times per day before eating. ACV is great for weight loss as well so you should take before eating. Adjust the dosage up or down. I'm a tea drinker and put it in my tea and I really like the taste. ACV can/will give you energy, weight loss, detox, and helps you digest your food properly. Also, read up on the oil pulling. On the main page to the left is a link for OP. I read everything I could on the subject and started about 4 months ago. 1 tbl every morning for 15 to 20 minutes. I change my oil to experiment but sesame, safflower is what I'm currently using. Cold pressed or expeller pressed, organic is best. These two remedies are inexpensive and can/will have excellent results. I read all the posts on these two subjects so that I could then do my own routine. I hope this helps you. Please provide an update to let us know how you are doing. "
05/19/2009: PR from Houston, Texas replies: "My heart goes out to you. Like so many of us you've had a hard time. At least you have end up at the right place with Earth Clinic. Take the time researching this site to find your answers. You will find this a journey as not everything works the same for everyone but don't give up - you will find your answers. First of all have you checked your PH balance as this is a key to wellness? You need to get ph test strips. I think I read you can buy them on amazon for a good price - otherwise your local health food store. Your ph balance is a must as disease cannot survive in the right balance. You need to check your PH balance every day. Second thing to consider is parasites as they can cause a lot of problems and are always the last thing doctors look for or never consider. Third thing is heavy metals and chemicals. I have learn this is the combination that disease needs to exist in a body. So if someone has been sick for a long time this is usually what is going on. MMS is remedy that you may want to research as it has help a lot of people. But there are so many other remedies to consider on your journey like H202, colloidal silver, Mini Beet Protocol to name a few. Some people have great with results with apple cider vinegar and baking soda. Most of us who have been where you are have had to do a combination of several things. Hope this helps."
05/19/2009: Dianne from Orillia, Ontario Canada replies: "Laure from Bellville, Have you tried any antifungal/parasite cleanses? Sounds like that could be a solution. I have learned a lot in regards to what happens when we are overloaded with parisites and fungus. Also you need to build up your immune system. You should be taking some wide spectrum pro biotics as well. There is a TV show called "Know The Cause" which you can see on the web. It features many aspects of health and the reasons for it's decline.Hope you can regain your health quickly Blessings Dianne"
05/19/2009: CheeMiss from Toronto, ON replies: "Hello Laure from Belleville, Ontario

I know that this suggestion may seem to be to easy to help, but it certainly is worth a shot. It is an old European remedy, but for some reason it was no longer working for me, UNTIL I DISCOVERED THE REASON WHY. Buttermilk, yep, buttermilk. BUT IT MUST BE ORGANIC OR IT WILL NOT HELP YOU AT ALL.

The health food stores only recently started to carry it.

I bought 3 quarts of it. Drank 1 quart per day. The 1st day it was a miracle for my acid reflux, burping, bloating, gas, cramps and IBS diarrhea . By the last quart, (only 3 days) even my Tinnitus settled down.

The ORGANIC Buttermilk contains B-12 as well as other vital nutrients for our body. (read the ingredients label). The industrial farming dairy business's have destroyed the natural healing properties in dairy by the way they confine and feed the cows. No wonder more & more people are having problems with dairy.

Organic cows are allowed to graze on clovers and grass. The entire planet was raised on health dairy before the brutal industrial farming techniques took over, and people were healthier back then than now. Including me.

I could not believe that something so simple would work so quickly.......And my weight has been coming off quickly without my dieting.

I guess my body is getting what it needs thru the Organic buttermilk AND AS A BONUS, I AM SLIMMING DOWN!!!

Believe me, I have been trying everything, incl. Omega 3's via cod liver oil, vitamins incl D, A etc, ACV (which made things worse for me) the list is endless to what I have tried. You name it, I've tried it.

I repeat, I only got these results because of the ORGANIC Buttermilk.......NOT THE ADULTERATED CONVENTIONAL BUTTERMILK.

I know that it sounds to simple.....but it really is working for me. I literally crave the stuff now, in lieu of food. Imagine that.

Btw: I now have been eating Organic dairy products only.....and they are working for me. Yeah! I missed my dairy products. If I eat conventional dairy products my problems come back.

I hope that it works for you as it is for me."
07/14/2010: Sarah from Dallas, Tx replies: "Laure, I hope you check back on your post, even though it's been quite awhile. Iodine drops got rid of my acid reflux. I guess iodine helps make digestive enzymes--but I'm not 100% sure. They also can help you lose weight because your thyroid, which controls your metabolism, uses iodine. I also tested "normal" on my thyroid test, but I don't believe it because my food journal tells me that anything that blocks iodine causes me to gain weight. These iodine blockers are called goitrogens. Soy, apple cider vinegar, mustard, cabbage (raw, and also cooked) all cause me to gain weight. Oddly enough, peanut butter does not. Also, selenium helps your thyroid, but make sure it is yeast-free. Cheap, yeast-based selenium caused me to get ovarian cysts, and they went away when I stopped taking it. Caution with the iodine: It will make Wilson's Syndrome worse. Check your body temp. Mine is always in the 96s and 97s and never gets up to 98 degrees. This is Wilson's syndrome, and too much iodine will make it worse. I am unable to lose weight and am cold all the time, and haven't been able to find a way to get better. I plan on getting a doctor's appointment and begging for prescription T-3, which is the thyroid hormone I am obviously not making. Also, I have been taking 1200 IUs daily of vit D3. Dr. Oz said on Oprah, that it heals the thyroid. Temp up, but also weight going up too. I get on the scales every morning and just curse, because nothing is keeping my weight from going up."
07/14/2010: Sarah from Dallas, Tx replies: "Note on my previous post: WOOHOO! I just took my temp and it is 98. 5! The 1200 IUs of vitamin D, and stopping the iodine did it. (Because of Wilson's Syndrome, I only take iodine drops if I get acid reflux, which is almost never, when it used to be daily. ) Now that my thyroid seems to be nearly healed, I feel so encouraged that I have thought of a new strategy for weight loss (also from reading other posts). I think what made Laure's thyroid and mine get bad, is a combination of adrenal fatigue (hers from ilness, mine from mercury poisoning), heavy metals getting into the thyroid, and candida (which mercury creates a hospitable environment for). Here's what I am already doing: No wheat (rice, potatoes and corn ok), and no goitrogens, and 1200 IUs vit D, yeast-free selenium, zinc, stress B vits, cod liver oil, and liquid calcium in the morning. At night (because I don't have coffee to block it at bedtime): 35 mg of iron, and 200 mg magnesium. The magnesium helps me sleep, and the iron is another mineral your thyroid needs but, very few people know this. New strategy: try jumping rope and moderate weights a few times a week (already walking a lot), 3 cayenne pills a day, cilantro to carry out the mercury, and olive leave, cat's claw, black walnut, and pau d'arco to get rid of the candida. Licorice herb will help heal your adrenals from your major illness, but only take it if your blood pressure is normal or below--and monitor, as licorice raises blood pressure. Also, I can't wait to try the suggestion on organic buttermilk. No doubt, if these things work--I will post again! "
07/24/2010: Sarah from Dallas, Tx replies: "Here's an update on my post from July 14. I got on the scales and weighed more than I had all year. Last summer, I tried to do the Master Cleanse, but I've done it so many years (probably with leaky gut syndrome) that I just couldn't down the lemonade any more and it turned out to be a 21 day water and carrot fast. I lost 19 pounds and only 4 of them came back when I started eating again. Well, now the weight was climbing back up a year later. I got mad and just quite eating altogether. Then a plan formed in my mind: How about a juice fast, except eat the raw fruits and veggies, so the fiber keeps the waste moving out, and I wouldn't get sick (I always get extremely sick and weak on fasts unless I can afford a really good colon cleanse which I can't, right now). I'm also drinking lots of water and taking some black strap molasses, bentonite clay, and clear Metamucil. I have lost 8 1/2 pounds in the 9 days since I started. I'm going for 21 days again, which might get me to my ideal weight. I also found and am reading a great book on undiagnosed hypothyroidism (which could cost you your life because of heart disease and cancer) called "Solved: The Riddle of Illness. Your Amazing Thyroid and How You Can Work With It To Control Arthritis, etc. Etc. " Authors: Stephen E. Langer, M. D. , and James F. Scheer."
08/11/2010: Sarah from Dallas, Tx replies: "Here's what happened after my 21 day raw fruit and veggie fast. Mostly I ate watermelon, raw carrots, an occasional carrot juice, apples, avocado (in moderation), clover sprouts, lemon juice, and black strap molasses (for vitamins and minerals). One good recipe: grated carrot mixed with minced apple, with lemon squeezed on top. Towards the end, I found that clover sprouts have the same chemicals that soy has--and was hindering the working of my still-healing thyroid. This may be why I only lost 15 pounds in the 21 days, when I expected to lose a pound a day. As to be expected, 5 pounds came back on when I started eating a normal diet again. The first thing I ate was the veggie soup from the Vegetable Soup cure in this Weight Loss category (you have to be very careful how you break a fast). That soup is SO great! I am going to try going on that for a week--starting tomorrow. It made me more full than any other food ever--even peanut butter--and got rid of all cravings. I think a lot of my hunger comes from inflamed intestines--because I got extra hungry when I ate meat. When I made the soup, I used homemade chicken broth (all store-bought has MSG), and Creole seasonings: salt, onion powder, garlic powder, black pepper, cayenne pepper, oregano, basil, thyme, and lots of paprika. SO yummy! If I have any success--I will post under the Vegetable Soup suggestion. (I keep homemade broth in the freezer at all times. My recipe: Bake a whole chicken for dinner. If there's any meat left, take it from the bones and store that in the fridge. Put the bones in the crock pot with two quartered onions, 1 1/2 tsp. Of salt, and enough pure water to cover. Simmer on low for about 24 hours. Let cool till only warm, and pour through a colander which is sitting in a big-enough bowl. Then place the bowl of broth in the fridge until the fat solidifies on top, and skim the fat off (otherwise it is grossly greasy). Then freeze in smaller containers."
08/11/2010: Sarah from Dallas, Tx replies: "I forgot one very important ingredient for the veggie soup. One chopped green bell pepper! Creole has got to have green bell pepper and celery (already in original recipe) to taste really good."
08/11/2010: Sarah from Dallas, Tx replies: "I think I forgot to mention the cayenne pepper (either ground or flakes) in the Creole seasoning. Very important: cayenne heals thyroids, cuts appetite, and heals a lot of other things--and makes things taste good. Also, forgot to mention, on the fruit and veggie fast, I also had papaya (tastes better with lemon squeezed over it), and pineapple, which tastes great all by itself. I think the enzymes in these help to clean up the gunk in our digestive systems."
