Home Remedies to Lose Weight

Updated: 11/15/2008

"The least intrusive weight loss methods, and those most often recommended by physicians, are adjustments to eating patterns and increased physical exercise. Usually, health professionals will recommend that their overweight patients combine a reduction of the caloric content of the diet with an increase in physical activity.

Other methods of losing weight include use of drugs and supplements that decrease appetite, block fat absorption, or reduce stomach volume. Surgery is another method. Bariatric surgery artificially reduces the size of the stomach, limiting the intake of food energy. Some of these treatments may have serious side-effects." (Wikipedia)

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR DOSAGE AND RECIPE
09/08/2008: Earth Clinic writes: "We are going to revise our recommendations for daily use of apple cider vinegar. As you know, Earth Clinic has recommended the standard 2 teaspoons in 8 oz of water 3x a day for years now. For more severe conditions, we recommended 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in 8 oz of water 3x day. We are coming to believe, however, that less is more in the case of apple cider vinegar. Less vinegar, more water.

Our revision to this remedy is as follows:

2 teaspoons of organic apple cider vinegar
16 ounces of water
Sip, don't chug!

We now suggest 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in 16 ounces of water that you'll sip throughout the day, rather than drinking the whole concoction at once 3 times a day. You will be keeping your pH in a constant, alkalized state by sipping this highly diluted dosage. Usually one tall glass of the concoction is all you'll need each day.

If you drink a lot of water throughout the day, consider adding just a splash of apple cider vinegar to your glass/container each time you fill it up, rather than drinking the one, 16 oz glass of acv and water mentioned above.

For the record, we are not big fans of adding baking soda to apple cider vinegar, nor are we fans of adding any kind of sweetener to the acv/water solution. The baking soda works great for some people, but causes severe side effects in others.

Also, we know the B---- brand is the most popular apple cider vinegar on the market, but we've had just as good results using Whole Foods' organic and Trader Joe's organic apple cider vinegar.

We hope you will experience better, faster results with this revised remedy!"

*** Note: Are you drinking or eating any diet products containing artificial sweeteners? If so, you may want to read the feedback on aspartame and sucralose side effects!

TED'S REMEDIES

12/16/2006: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand writes: "The fast food industry problems was actually covered in a documentary movie made by Morgan Spurlock called "Super Size Me". In the movie, Mr. Spurlock mentioned that he wanted to prove whether fast food was healthy or not after seeing a news on T.V. purporting that you cannot prove that eating fast food is not healthy.

At the time, Morgan Spurlock's body was healthy so he decided to take a 30 day challenge by eating McDonald's food for 30 days. The rules were quite fair. He needs to eat all the items sold in McDonald's. If they ask whether he wanted super size, he will say yes. There is a good reason why -- most people order Super Sized portions.

Within the third day he vomited, and within 15 days he was sick and gaining weight. The amount of sugar he was consuming was several gallons of sugar, which is quite a bit for one person.

At the end of the experiment, he gained weight, had high cholesterol, blood pressure problem, etc.

Cheese is opiate producing and causes addiction, but then so does caffeine from the cola.

More than 90% all items in fast food is actually acid forming, which includes hamburgers, french fries, fried chicken, coke, etc. The only item that isn't so is salad using Italian Dressing!

The other problem appears that OILY food and trans fatty acid are quite dangerous, particularly that when you do boil vegetable oils in high temperature the starch and sugars and vegetable oils will form a cancer causing compound called Marylander.

The other thing that is less known is oil tends to act like a sponge in gathering heavy metals during cooking. This is why avoiding oily food is important.

Eating sweets causes you to be fat because they are not burned when you do eat it, so the body stores them. Eating oily food is not healthy either, because oily foods becomes fat too, but most importantly free fatty acids are highest in fried food (from the frying possibly) and scientists do know that free fatty acids BLOCKS the actions of hormones.

Hormones, in my opinion play an important part in controlling your weight, in fact most of my weight loss is actually attributable to the increase in hormone supplements of DHEA, or the reduction of oily foods from frying as well as reduction of sugar. Most weight loss that is clearly seen by scientists which are often on short term of a year or less that clearly shows weight loss have a lot to do with hormone injections using human growth hormone and other hormonal related substances.

Of course we as a consumer prefer a safer method than just following the scientist footsteps since hormones are rather risky in some cases. A much safer way is the use of secretogues, which means taking more of certain amino acids to cause the body to increase in hormone naturally. Human growth hormone is well known to increase from taking certain amino acids such as L-glutamine, L-glycine, L-ornithine, and L-arginine for example and they found to increase several times.

The other is vitamin, where B3 niacin is the common one, however, I went to dig a little deeper and found niacinamide, which won't cause the flush to work just as well. Of course for the purists, niacin red flush problem can be stopped by just taking one aspirin 30 minutes before taking niacin.

Whichever, I still prefer to take niacin, and my remedy for human growth hormone formula is to take several grams of amino acid before sleep, in particular L-glutamine, L-glycine and niacin. I still think the adrenal glands, which prevent you from job burnout or inability to handle stress, ESPECIALLY me, means that I also need certain vitamins which will cause my body to produce adrenal glands naturally too. The best ones to handle that is taking a gram or two of Vitamin B5 such panthenol or pantothenic acid. I tend to avoid calcium and take more magnesium, but in the fish aquarium world and natural sea, the ideal concentration should be 3 parts magnesium to 1 part calcium. Since our food already has plenty of calcium, usually from vegetables, then magnesium is something we need more of. Very few people in fact know that an ordinary potatoes same serving has a lot more calcium then that of milk. So i guess we can thank the boys on Madison Avenue for creating this kind of urban legends.

Finally the single most important things we DON'T need whether it be fast food or even all processed food: Monosodium Glutamate (MSG). MSG not only will make the food taste good, but MSG also destroys the hypothalamus which controls the entire body's homeostasis. The most easily seen is appetite. Upon taking it, you will have a sudden urge to eat more and more which leads to obesity. In fact, scientist can make baby mice morbidly fat by injecting them with monosodium glutamate. The MSG will once entering into the brain destroying the delicate homeostasis mechanism controlling hunger and will be morbidly fat throughout its lives.

Of course this can be boon sales for the pharmaceuticals selling cholesterol lowering drugs and other. However, most people do not read the labels, especially when taking vaccine injections, monosodium glutamate is commonly added too, besides just the toxic mercury thimerosal and alzheimer causing aluminum.

A couple of decades ago, it was required that babies be in their 6 months or life or beyond to get a vaccine, otherwise it would cause brain damage. Today we are doing it within a week of birth and suddenly there is a jump in the number of ADHD, attention deficit disorder and autism case. [EC: read Candice Pert's research on this subject]

Currently it is the developed countries that have the highest rate of ADHD, attention deficit disorder and autism while the underdeveloped countries can't afford them.

So as you can see it is not JUST the fast food being a problem, other areas are also problems too."

ACAI BERRY

1 YEA

[YEA]  11/08/2008: Robyn from Perth, Western Australia writes: "I have been reading a lot of late about the fantastic anti-oxidant power of this acai berry. Have also read that it is very good for weight loss. Has anyone tried this for this purpose, did it work and did you use it alone or with a colon cleanse? Some articles I have read suggest that is has colon cleansing properties and others seem to suggest that the two need to be used in conjunction with each other. I would be very interested in anyone's personal experiences. Looking forward to feedback. Thanks."

11/09/2008: Lori Keat from Blacksburg, Virginia replies: "I have been drinking Acai Berry juice w/blueberry,pomegranite,raspberry juice added from a major vitamin shop chain store. I have also been doing the colon cleanse. I chose to do so, because I'd read where the "1-2 punch" was the way to go. I did not buy what was recommended on the internet as a packaged deal, but purchased my own from our local health food store. Having been doing both for about a month now, I have seen NO weightloss. I have, however, discovered that I love the Acai Berry juice. It seems to make me a better me. No side effects, I just 'feel better' I sleep like a dream, whether I take the juice in the a.m. or p.m. I have also tried the company's Acai Berry juice which comes in a bottle that resembles a wine bottle, and you can only purchase from someone who has become a distributor for that company. I believe this was on Oprah (like I care). Anyway, it had a nasty bitter taste to it, but I finished the bottle because it was given to me, and I did not have to spend the normal fee of approx. $45.00 per bottle. I like the one I get from the vitamin shop w/the three other juices added. Now for the colon cleanse. I bought mine from our local health food store. I started w/ the 2 week, just to besure my body could handle it. I was concerned because I thought I'd 'go' all day every day. In my case this was not so, I was going every other day, but 'better'. I know that doesn't make much sense unless you experience it. Also it was very gentle. I did notice my indigestion lessoned quite a bit, and so did my occassional acid reflux feeling. I did not diet, but was more aware of my food choices.

I will continue both, because I see a difference in 'me', but not my body weight. I hope this helps you.
Lori K."

ACTIVATED CHARCOAL

2 YEA

[YEA]  06/15/2008: Jennie from Copenhagen, Denmark writes: "I had been losing weight really quickly after starting an exercise program. I wanted to make sure that any old toxins that had been stored in my fat didn't start circulating in my body, so I took 1 tablet of activated charcoal, 3 times a day (remembering to wait 2 hours before/after eating), for a week. I didn't exactly feel a difference, but I SAW one. I looked five years younger (am only 30, so that's a lot for me)! I also highly recommend adding 1 teaspoon of activated charcoal powder to 1 tablespoon of facial mask. It is a mini-facelift!"

06/24/2008: Stephanie from Montgomery, Texas, USA replies: "Where did you find the activated charcoal?"

[YEA]  03/04/2008: Sharon from Santa Fe, NM writes: "After menopause, I seemed to be bloated in my midsection most of the time. My lower stomach was puffy most of the time. I'm a thin person, and thought this was weight gain due to menopause & quitting smoking. Ond day I took 2 activated charcoal capsules for gas, and I ended up spending a lot of time in the bathroom that day. By that evening, I realized that my stomach was flat again! I figured that the charcoal had detoxified my system!! I will continue to take the charcoal once or twice weekly now. I am extremely happy with the results!!"

ACV AND BAKING SODA

3 YEA

11/08/2008: Gigi from Palm Coast, Florida USA writes: "To the person who is experiencing constipation with ACV use. I, too, had the same experience. But once I got organic ACV, the problem was gone. So, if you're using a supermarket brand, stop using it, and get the Bragg's brand with the mother in it. You will begin to notice all the benefits without detrimental side effects (in fact, it promotes regular bowle movement). Good luck, and remember to drink it with a straw so as to protect tooth enamel. Hope this helps you! Gigi"

[YEA]  11/03/2008: Kathy from Bristol, TN writes: "I have been taking ACV/BS/Water for several months now. Loss of 17 lbs is terrific! I've been tapering off the ACV due to the jitters. I drink only filtered or mountain spring water (at least 1 liter) and tea now, no soft drinks, no diet drinks, no aspartame. Occasionally I take BSM. Also take SuperGreens and Magnesium plus flax seed pill. I use only coconut or grape seed oils for any eating/cooking. Gave up sugar, white bread, white flour, am eating organic mostly or home cooking veggies, rice, some chicken, whole wheat breads. Cut way back on proportion size. I use sea salt. Take B compound 3 times a week. Use Turmeric and Oil of Oregano for sinuses/sore throat/cold. I keep my Ph around 7 and walk 3 or 4 times a week. Still I have insomnia, plus now I am SUFFERING WITH CONSTIPATION. Additional fiber makes it much worse. In my life I can only remember being constipated 2 or 3 times and I am over 60. To combat this, I took 2 TBL mineral oil last night, nothing happened. I took 2 more TBL late this morning, still nothing by 11 pm tonight. I am on blood pressure meds (HCTZ and atenolol) plus cymbalta anti depressant. I was taking Lipitor but gave that up recently. Anyone have any thoughts? I have read all the posts on constipation and suppose tomorrow I will try Lime and BS, or maybe tonight. HELP.

THIS IS THE VERY BEST SITE EVER, EVER, EVER! Thank everyone who contributes."

11/04/2008: Joanna from Westport, CT replies: "Kathy, the baking soda might be causing your problem. You might want to cut that out first and see what happens."

[YEA]  12/17/2007: Blanche from toronto, canada writes: "Remedy: Apple cider venigar and baking soda. Ailment: weight loss and blood ph. I am senior who has been using ACV off and on for years, but did not attribute it to anything particular, even though people commented on my skin, I thought that I was just blessed; however, six months ago, I saw an article on the wonders of ACV and baking soda, and thought that I whould try the mixture (which I drank through a straw three times a day, to protect my teeth from the acid), in combination with a daily exercise program, (bally total fitness twister), for weight loss, also to alkalize my blood ph. Well in no time at all, (1 month), I lost those stubborn five pounds that I had been struggling with, and my ph went from 8.0 to 6.8. Hope this helps those who are concerned about their weight and teeth. "

[YEA]  10/08/2007: Kimberly (Supermom82@aol.com) from Mineral, VA, USA writes: "Hello, I've been using the ACV & Baking Soda since June and have been very please with the results. I went from having NO energy, chronic general joint pain all over, excessive weight and acid reflux to feeling about 75% better with a lot more energy, NO chronic general pain and I have lost 20lbs to date and although my acid reflux isn't gone, at least when it flairs up even with meds, I can now get it under control. I have about 60lbs I would like to still loose. I would like to stop taking my medication for acid reflux, but I think I need to loose some more weight to. I think that in conjunction with the ACV and baking soda would do the trick. I am also on blood pressure medication and would like to see what happens with that to. I have seen a decrease in my blood pressure since starting the ACV. It will be interesting to see if my dr removes me for this medication to. The one thing I was really hoping for with the ACV and baking soda that I haven't seen an improvement in yet is a reduction in my chronic back pain and pinched nerve. I still have to take something for these two when they flair up. I have scoliosis and I guess this will be something I will have to address differently. However, if anyone has any suggestions, please feel free to post or e-mail me. Over all I am very very please with the results I've had with the ACV and baking soda. Thanks!"

I have over the last 5 months removed a majority of the processed foods that I was eating from my diet, as most processed foods had allergens in them for me and I feeling even better now that I am avoiding my food allergies. I am loosing weight around my waistline, which is a very good sign as I have metabolic syndrome. My next step is to change my cooking oil. This is where I have a question for Ted. I know you like to coconut oil but have you tried the virgin red palm oil? It is very high in vitamin E including tocotrienols which is a good anti-inflammatory and protects the skin. Is this a good oil or not? Here is a website for the product that I know of. http://www.tropicaltraditions.com/red_palm_oil.htm They also carry the palm oil. Thank you"

[YEA]  11/15/2008: Kurt from Seffner, Florida. USA writes: "Hello I was diagnosed with RA when I was about 35 years old. Over the last 11 years I've gone from walking and running to barely walking. A little over a month ago I found this site and decided to try the ACV. Now not being able to exercise I gained about 50 some pounds in 11 years. Since I've started taking ACV I have noticed that the RA has lightened up A little, But to be honest I missed a couple days of taking it, while in the hospital. Now normally, I eat pretty well and have had no problem with that. But when they weighed me at the hospital, I found that in the last month I have lost over 30 pounds without even trying. Now I have tried to loss this weight before on diets with no success. Now I'm just starting to notice that I am losing my appetite. So I'm not eating as much now. What a nice side effect to losing the pain of RA. My doctor has been after to lose weight over the last couple of years. Can't wait to see his face and tell him what I've been doing. I think he's gonna be shocked, I know that I was. Thanks Kurt"

[NAY]  11/14/2008: Stacey from Greensboro, North Carolina writes: "I've been using apple cider vinegar for about 2 months now, and I have to admit that it does give you glowing skin. I drink one tablespoon of organic unfiltered ACV in a glass of water once a day and use regular filtered as a skin toner on my face twice a day. I'm in my late 20's and have acne, and I saw immediate results in 2 days. My skin glows, even when I have a break out. I use other products for acne, but I have noticed that break outs are reduced.

Additionally, drinking ACV has helped my acid reflux. I do not exactly understand how consuming an acid helps, but it does. I suppose it is possible that my stomach does not have to produce and excessive amount of acid if I am ingesting one.

As a side effect, I did notice that I had the constipation problem other people mentioned. I found it was worse the more ACV I drank, so I just restrict myself to 1 tablespoon per day and give my body a break from ACV at least one day a week.

Weightloss-wise, I've not noticed any results, but I think this is because I am not significantly over-weight and eat a healthy diet in the first place. I'm a 5'8'' 155lbs woman, so even a 5-10lbs loss from drinking ACV would be a bit drastic. I may, over an extended period, lose a bit, but I think that ACV helps more if you have not been taking any weight management measures. I think it might be helpful if more people describe their lifestyle pre-ACV in the weightloss section so that people will have a better idea of what results they can expect."

[YEA]  10/11/2008: Betty from Plant City, Florida writes: "Raw organic apple cider vinegar has helped me so much, I feel like a vinegar evangelist!! I tell everyone about it. I heard about it in 2003 after having been in the hospital for chronic broncitis three times that year and had develped asthma, was on a nebulizer and inhalers. I have always had allergies.

After I started the raw vinegar mixed with raw honey - I have been drinking 1/4 cup mixed with a glass of water at night.- I have lost 55 pounds, which I learned was due to the vinegar daily - have not had bronchitis or asthma and have quit taking acid reflex meds, lung meds, singular for asthma, don't need the nebulizer or inhalers. I also quit taking nexium and just learned it is also good for leg cramps. I am a much healther person. I take mine at night, but think I will try taking smaller doses three times a day. Even my lung doctor agreed ACV was good for your lungs. He said his Mother raised them on it for sore throats and colds. Too bad the drug companies don't agree. Thanks for your site"

[YEA]  10/02/2008: Bev from Chicago, Illinois, USA writes: "I have been taking two tablespoons of avc 3 to 2 times a day with four ounces of apple juice or grape juice, for about four weeks now (I usually drink 6 to 8 ounces of water after). I orginally took it for acid reflux and it began working immediately. I read more info on this site and continued to take the same dosage and just last Monday, I have lost over two inches in belly fat, fat from back and upper arms. I usually eat raw and steamed veggies with low carbs, but never had results such as this. My hair is growing faster and my nails are growing like never before. Thanks for this site."

[MAYBE]  10/01/2008: Beth from Auckland, Middle-Earth New Zealand writes: "

I have been using ACV for weight loss for a week now and this is what I've noticed;

POSITIVES:
1. My hair seems to have suddenly grown an inch and is glossy.
2. My skin is really looking good and that's everywhere even my legs. I've had 1 person comment that I look younger but she didnt know what it was.
3. Sinus seems to have calmed down the head aches, but I still suffer with the sneezing and sore eyes.
4. Energy levels are definitely higher AND that includes libido..?

NEGATIVES:

1. No weight loss or curbed appetite.
2. Always farting and not the 'fun' type either.
3. Sudden salivating in the mouth for no reason.

I will carry on using ACV because of the other benefits and it's only been a week so will continue until the bottle is empty. At the moment, I have to give ACV for Weightloss a 'MAYBE'."

[NAY]10/23/2008: Beth from Middle Earth, New Zealand replies: "Follow up from my previous post... It is now a month and I have had NO WEIGHT LOSS though my clothes do feel a little bit loose. I tried taking the ACV with baking soda and it tasted like rotten raw potatoes! I drink 2 tsp ACV with 475ml cold filtered water, and sip it through the day. I increased my water intake because you do feel thirsty for water. Even though I havent lost any weight, my hair and nails are really growing fast. It is true that you do feel energised. It is also true that the cravings for sugar and FAT SALTY junk foods are curbed.

Just in the last 2 weeks I noticed that I was eating less and that I cant tolerate some of the fried fatty doughnuts or chips! Now that's an accomplishment!

I'm still going to take ACV regularly because I'm addicted to the taste :)"

[YEA]11/13/2008: Beth from Middle Earth, New Zealand replies: "WEIGHT LOSS = YES

Following up from my posts, I've lost 3 kgs (6.6pds) in 7 weeks. The weight started coming off in the 5/6th week. I also increased my drinking intake (of 425ml and 2tsp) to twice a day. I actually feel sick if I eat a couple of chips (your french fries?) or a nibble of biscuits. I can taste the fat in the back of my throat. I also noticed that I lost the craving for KFC. What an amazing thing this ACV is! My weightloss is not as rapid as some of the other posters here but it is working for me. All I needed was a bit of patience and faith."

[YEA]  09/26/2008: Nima from Dhaka, Bangladesh writes: "I was having severe knee pain. One of my friends asked me to take apple cider vinegar. I started that while I was in Singapore. Until now I finished 3 bottles. Doses : two teaspoonful with one glass of cold water. My knee pain has not been cured, but I reduced extra fat of my body & lose weight. But some of my relatives cautioned me that ACV will increase acidity, as well as may be harmful for kidney. It may be mentioned that I have given away my one kidney to my husband & am now living with one kidney. Bangladesh's nephrologist couldn't answer my query whether ACV would be harmful for kidney. And can I take this dose for life long? Would appreciate your respond & suggestion in this regard. Regards."

EC: Apple cider vinegar is said to alkalinize your pH, not make it more acidic, but the only way to know for sure is to check your urine with a pH strips, bought at your local health food store or pharmacy. (Even garden supply and pool supply stores will have pH kits.) We'll pass your questions on to Ted for response!

09/30/2008: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "I prefer a moderate approach where a both baking soda and ACV is added to the remedy so that the pH is between 7- 7.5. This beats me worrying whether the ACV is going to make my urine pH any more acid because of possible acidity in the ACV. Certainly the pH strips and pH meters of measuring urinary acidity or alkalinity will decide it, but people with low levels of bicarbonates in their system may not have sufficient metabolism to metabolise the ACV to be alkaline in a few cases. The usual remedy to get a fairly neutral or biologically friendly pH is 2 tablespoons of ACV plus 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda in 1/2 glass of water at least. This can be taken 2 or 3 times a day. The pH is between 7 - 7.5, which is fairly close to the pH of the blood. The ORP (oxidation reduction potential) has a -150 millivolts, indicates its healing potential in a solution, while most of the foods and drinks we take actually is a free radical and steals electrons from healthy cells where it's ORP for a typical processed food to be between +200 to +300 mV, which is oxidative kind of food and tend to accelerate aging process, and hence greater kidney damage because of its oxidative nature. Exposures to hydrocarbons and aspartame, Sweet n' Low, and other artificial sugars tend to accelerate metabolic acidosis and kill the kidneys by causing the kidney to be bathe in high acid environment much like our stomach digesting our own kidneys, as an illustration.

Sour foods in general is the major problem, but more bitter foods are generally more alkaline. To help protect the kidney monitoring pH is one of them, but other diets that are too high in beans can result in high calcium oxalates too, so moderation is best and by that I don't mean eating beans everyday. Certain Indian diets I have noticed are quite high in beans where they might consume this almost everyday. Without sufficient alkalinity the oxalates creep into the body as oxalic acid and form calcium oxalates, which clogs up the kidney. The other issue is high blood pressure, and high blood sugar which tends to kill the kidney too. A blood sugar can be held stable if water was drank before during and after a meal so that there's no blood sugar spikes occuring between meals. In fact kidney is often congested after eating if certain people do not drink sufficient amount of water causing a cloudy urine, which is one possible effects of dehydration from insufficient liquids during the meal. In certain foods that I have found to interfere with kidneys is alcohol, potato chips, and many salted products, of which these salted products used common table salt, which raises the blood pressure. A sea salt is substituted and kelp is taken as an iodine supplements instead. Since potassium is above average in an Indian diets from more vegetables the biggest problems appear to be the high oxalate diets found in beans, spinach for example which tends to intefere with kidney health.

Ted"

I discovered ACV from a good read and decided to give it a try due to its many benefits. I drink a tspn before each meal (except breakfast). The results are wonderful! My energy level went up, and I also lost weight. It wasn't an overnight success, but it worked! Just recently my husband suggested I put some on a cotton ball and use it for a couple of flare ups I had. And that was last week. Today, I can stand here and honestly say, my pores shrunk and my face is glowing. Needless to say, I've used it as a toner. I've never felt so confident."
