[YEA]  03/21/2007: Amy from Cedar Park, Texas writes: "i use apple cider vinegar topically for many things. so far, it has cured my teenage sons pimple out break(we now use it every night as a toner followed by coconut oil), athletes foot, fever blisters, styes, rashes, cleaned my sinks, windows(pretty much the whole house). i also started drinking it. 3 tblsp of acv in 8 oz. filtered water & 1/4 tsp baking soda everyday, 3 times a day. so far, i have lost weight, i have not been sick, i haven't suffered from allergies, i have more energy, and i noticed last week that a y shaped varicose vein is not even a connected v and it is flat (it was very much protruding before). i was pretty ecstatic about that! i am so excited by all the benefits that i tell everyone! my family jokes that i should put some in a windex bottle (they are referring to the father from the movie 'my big, fat greek wedding'. anyway, i now buy small bottles to put acv and coconut oil in. i have given these to my family, friends,& clients as samples. i write down the brands(and specify why) , & also your web site. they have all called me and asked where they can buy more. yeah! they have used it for there blemishes, those with diabetes have said it lowered their sugar levels. a couple of my clients who have eczema and psoriasis have told me they have been very impressed with the acv and coconut oil on their problem areas and for dry skin. wow!!! truly a miracle!!! i was also wondering if the 'nays' are using raw, unfiltered, organic acv? i have bought some in the past that did not work. after doing more research i had come to understand where i had gone wrong. i then bought acv and 'nutivas' coconut oil. what a difference! oh!!!! i use the coconut oil on my woods! it's awesome!!!"

When I keep my thryoid medicine high enough (no go by TSH) then I avoid these. I had my spider veins lasered off with an infrared laser at a electrolysis place. I am celiac and the apple cider vinegar used by Amy and her friends mentions eczema, blemishes, psoriasis, atheletese foot etc. which can be caused by celiac. Celiac's can't eat gluten grain and sometimes dairy if they wrecked their intestines too much from the celiac. I use slippery elm, valerian, green tea to heal my gut lining and eating no dairy or gluten grains to help my celiac. Celiac makes the thyroid go down which then may cause varicose veins. I take HCl and enzymes with meals and dairy free acidophlius when stomach acid is low. The acidophilus helps with yeast problems like athletes foot and more. Apple cider vinegar helps neutralize your pH, which helps people lose weight.I also helps block the absorption of carbohydrates. Lemon water also helps this. Neutral pH does not let viruses, bacteria, fungi(yeast), or parasites live too well. They like acidic bodies."

[YEA]  11/06/2006: James from Pemberton, New Jersey writes: "Apple Cider Vinegar has cured: varicose veins, weight gain, tendinitis, wrinkles. In April of 2005, I came across a booklet for ACV, at the time I was 50 years old I played sports in high school, a construction worker for 20 years and a mover for the last 15, so I have done a number on my body over the years. My daughter convinced me to start taking ACV... I have taken it everyday since! The health benefits have been many. The first thing I noticed was my hair and nail growth, doesn't seem like much but my hair was white and had no color, but was growing back in blonde! I thought that was amazing! Over all the years of abuse on my feet and ankles I had purple feet from the varicose veins, it really was a severe case, after two months of use my feet started to look clearer to me, but I wasn't sure so I started taking pictures....I now have NO varicose veins on my feet, legs or anything. In April of 2005 I was a size 38 pants, today I am a 32 pants. I have not done any extra exercise to achieve this, It simply melted the pounds away (I also have a six pack again). The ACV has given me a facelift, I do NOT look like I am 51! My wrinkles around my eyes have literally disappeared. My skin is tighter, firmer every where. I feel like a new man. Over the years while abusing my body in my everyday life (working) I developed new and painful body movements, aches where I never had before and eventually the Doc diagnosed me with tendinitis (really painful) in both of my shoulders, being a mover this isn't good for business, it really started hurting my paycheck (then I started the ACV). I really had not realized I stopped taking the naproxen the Dr. had prescribed until I went to see him for my physical. He asked me if I needed a new script, that's when I realized I used to live on those pills everyday and hadn't needed them once since I started taking the ACV, so I told the Dr. about the ACV he was awed, seeing the results for himself he decided to start taking it, in fact my Barber, Boss, Coworkers, Kids, Brothers and sister all now take it with health benefits of there own. I tell you I LOVE ACV it has changed my life and made me a new healthier man. I actually believe I have a long healthy life ahead. The recipe I use everyday is: 2 table spoons of ACV and 1 Tablespoon of honey. Add water to taste. I do this two times a day, everyday. Good luck to all in your journey to a healthier you!"

Did you apply or massage also the apple cider vinegar on your varicose veins?coz' I just started to use this ACV for 2 weeks now, honestly I haven't seen any improvement yet but I will still continue. I know it will take sometime. I'm also taking it taking it 2x a day. But mine is only 2 tsp. of ACV and 1 tsp. of honey. And at night I do rubbed the ACV to my varicose which is all over my legs and once it gets dry, I massaged it also with coconut oil. I only do this in the evening after taking a shower coz' in the morning I need to go to work. Do you have any suugestions? and the brand of ACV does it matter?Im using the vitaminshoppe organic ACV and garden of life for extra virgin coconut oil. hope anybody can suggest me.

thanks...cindy"

06/23/2009: Natalie from Wauwatosa, WI replies: "Hi, I have been using ACV since last November. Since then, I have gone from a size 6 to a size 2/4. Weight loss was not my original intention though...this past winter my family was constantly sick. I was home with my son with a severe sinus infection and was researching natural cures before I went to the Dr. to get antibiotics. That's when I came across this website. I started taking the ACV in large doses, actually slamming "shots" of them, and within 2 days my sinus infection was gone. That was as convincing as it could get for me that ACV really works. However, I'm 29 years old and have begun to get some varicose veins and spider veins, especially on my right leg. Taking ACV orally, has only minimally (if at all) helped this. Am I supposed to be rubbing the ACV on my leg? If so, can you explain why this would be effective in curing varicose veins? Thank you."

DRIED BASIL

[YEA]  10/20/2009: Connie from Manitowoc, Wisconsin writes: "Basil helps Varicose Veins, leg cramps/circulation

I drink too much coffee and get tight calf muscles. Also I have small varicose veins. One day I stumbled on this, and it works so well I try to use the basil every day. It makes my legs feel warm and relaxed; I can usually tell when it starts to take effect, as I suddenly notice the sensation. Also, the veins are shrinking. This is what I do, not sure what's most important, but the basil seems to be the thing. I tried just making basil tea, and it didn't seem to work.

Scrambled Eggs
3 eggs
1/2 teaspoon basil (dried)
chopped onion
cheese
olive oil to grease the pan
pinch sea salt
pinch ground black pepper
cook as usual

Salad
lettuce
tomatoes
onions
cheese
green pepper
olive oil
fresh lime juice
1/2 teaspoon basil (dried)
pinch sea salt"

10/21/2009: Jennifer from Sydney, Australia replies: "Thankyou, Connie for your basil posting.

One question: Wouldn't fresh basil be more potent and effective than dried basil??? Obviously this is working for you, but I am a little confused and would've thought the fresh herb would be better. Does anyone know???
thankyou. (I LOVE basil!)

Jennifer"

10/22/2009: Connie from Manitowoc, Wisconsin, USA replies: "That thought occurred to me, too. So I tried adding fresh store-bought basil to a salad thinking it would work even better. It was as if there was no basil at all. Don't know why. Maybe it was irradiated or something. Don't know. Try it. Maybe your basil is different. Both generic store brand and fancy non-irradiated dried basil worked. Maybe it was the variety rather than the processing?"
10/22/2009: Connie from Manitowoc, Wisconsin, USA replies: "That's cold pressed extra virgin olive oil. That's what I use."
10/23/2009: Lita from Sanford, Fl replies: "How exactly do you use it?? Do you apply it topically or drink it??? How much??? Thanks"

EC: Connie gives a recipe in her first post on the subject.

11/01/2009: Jb from Central, Maryland replies: "The basil remedy is very intriguing. The difference between dried basil and fresh may be more about the amount than the processing. In cooking, one must use significantly more fresh herb than dried to get the same flavor level. Perhaps this is a similiar situation. Either way, I'm going to try the dried basil-- I'm glad it's working for you, Connie. Thanks for posting your find!"
04/09/2010: Anonymous from Manitowoc, Wisconsin, Usa replies: "Looking online I saw that 2 teaspoons of dry basil contains 60% of the Daily Value of vitamin K. Curious I went to see what vitamin K is goood for. It is said to regulate the production and flow of calcium, and thereby it helps prevent osteoporosis, arteriosclerosis, high blood pressure/stroke, and may help prevent diabetes and Alzheimer's. Supposedly our bodies usually make only a third of what is needed. Liver and gall bladder disease, and diseases of the intestinal tract, as well as some medicines such as long-term antibiotics and cholesterol lowering drugs can deplete vitamin K. The volitile oils in it are destroyed by high heat, so using it at low temperatures or not heating it are recommended. Maybe basil would be helpful where free glutamic acid (think MSG) is causing a calcium imbalance?"
04/09/2010: Anonymous from Manitowoc, Wisconsin, Usa replies: "Chamomile: This at Wikipedia

German chamomile is used medicinally against sore stomach, irritable bowel syndrome, and as a gentle sleep aid. It is also used as a mild laxative and is anti-inflammatory and bactericidal. It can be taken as a herbal tea, two teaspoons of dried flower per cup of tea, which should be steeped for ten to fifteen minutes while covered to avoid evaporation of the volatile oils. The marc should be pressed because of the formation of a new active principle inside the cells, which can then be released by rupturing the cell walls, though this substance only forms very close to boiling point. For a sore stomach, some recommend taking a cup every morning without food for two to three months. [4] It is also used as a mouthwash against oral mucositis. It has acaricidal properties against certain mites, such as Psoroptes cuniculi. One of the active ingredients of the essential oil from German chamomile is the terpene bisabolol. [5][6] Other active ingredients include farnesene, chamazulene, flavonoids (including apigenin, quercetin, patuletin and luteolin) and coumarin.[7]

A 2006 review of the medical literature reported a number of beneficial effects for chamomile in in vitro and animal tests, but added that more human clinical trials are needed before firm conclusions can be drawn. Research with animals suggests antispasmodic, anxiolytic, anti-inflammatory and some antimutagenic and cholesterol-lowering effects for chamomile. [8] Chamomile has sped healing time of wounds in animals.[9] [10] It also showed some benefit in an animal model of diabetes.[11] In vitro chamomile has demonstrated moderate antimicrobial and antioxidant properties and significant antiplatelet activity, as well as preliminary results against cancer.[12] [13] Essential oil of chamomile was shown to be a promising antiviral agent against herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) in vitro. [14] Potential risks include interference with warfarin and infant botulism in very young children.[15] [16]

(end quote)

Coumarin is said to be a blood thinner."
07/23/2010: Danni from Miami, Florida replies: "I would really like to hear more about how your varicose veins are after using dried basil for a while. I saw an article about using basil in a magazine and know there was a study done on it overseas. I'm curious to see what amount of improvement you've seen in your varicose veins. How long did it take? I'd also like to hear from anyone else who is using it to help varicose and/or spider veins. Thanks!"
09/25/2011: Gina from Waxahachie, Texas, Usa replies: "FYI- dried basil isn't just leaves, it's the flower heads also. They are much more pungent. if you use fresh basil medicinally be sure to include some flower heads."

HORSE CHESTNUT AND BUTCHERS BROOM HERBS

Ratings:

YEA

[YEA]  01/23/2008: Cynthia from Grand Junction, Colorado writes: "Two herbs, Horse Chestnut and Butchers Broom, have been very helpful to me -- they have taken away the sore, aching, tired feeling from my legs. I don't know if the *appearance* of my leg veins has improved or not. They seem less noticeable now, but I've gained a little weight on my legs, so there may be more fat hiding some veins now.

These 2 specific herbs have made such a difference to my quality of life.

Background: I started getting varicose veins, and the aching that goes with them, when I was 16! Sixteen years old with varicose veins! And no, I wasn't pregnant, or obese.

The varicose veins just got worse over the decades.
The aching, TIRED feeling bothered me more than how they looked. I usually wore jeans, slacks, or a long skirt to hide them. And I hate support hosiery. It's so uncomfortable, especially in summer.

A few years ago, I was reading some traditional, conservative woman's magazine, maybe it was Woman's Day or Ladies' Home Journal, but I can't remember. There was an article about several herbal remedies that actually have some scientific evidence for being effective. It said that the herbs Horse Chestnut and Butchers Broom were helpful for varicose veins.

I tried the herbs.

The local natural foods stores sell several brands of capsules with the herbs in them. Affordable.

A couple year's ago, a doctor warned me not to take those herbs for a few days before a planned surgery, and for a couple weeks afterwards. Doctors wisely are cautious about any herb or drug before surgery, that may or may not affect circulation or blood or the speed of bleeding and/or coagulation. Other than that, my physician does not object to the herbs.

The usual common sense caveat: Of course you should talk to your doctor about any herbal remedies that you are thinking of trying. Because (1) I'm not a physician, and (2) each person's body and health are different, and (3) natural herbs can still have side effects and/or interactions with other drugs/herbs.

The Horse Chestnut and Butchers Broom herbs have worked like a miracle for me, so I'm surprised that they are not well known."

01/14/2011: Bmilush from Bronx, Ny, Us replies: "I have varicose veins and I would like to know how do you take the horse chestnut and Butchers Broom and how does it come when you buy it?"
01/15/2011: Alpha Beta Cowboy from Azusa, Ca replies: "If the Horse Chestnut does not work, try two things: one, Vitamin E for tissue repair; and two, wear compression hose (in other words, ankle socks or knee-highs) for a few days to a week and see how your legs feel. The compression hose will maximize the circulation from any movement, walking, running that you do. The hose alone will improve circulation and cause your legs to feel lighter and more energetic. The one prohibition is to not wear them at night while you sleep. Put that question to your doctor."
[YEA]  11/24/2011: Dave From Greenville, Sc from Greenville, South Carolina replies: "Ditto on the horse chestnut. My mother suffered from numerous leg problems; when the varicose veins got worse, she took three tablets of the horse chestnut herb every day for a week or so and the varicose vein issue went away for months. She did not have to take the horse chestnut all the time; only when the veins were inflamed. Some people may find that they have to take the horse chestnut on an ongoing basis to get good results."

I started making wheatgrass/quackgrass juice a few times a week. Also take chlorophyll, MSM-Glucosamine-Chrondroiten combo, fish-flax-borage oil, evening primrose oil, fresh lemon juice, plain oatmeal, raw coconut oil, dandelion root tea, plain yogurt, no gluten, no coffee, no chocolate. I quit taking the horse-chestnut a few days ago, the veins improved since then, took it again today for heavy feeling in the legs. I suspect it's the juice and the oils that are shrinking the veins. Scrambled eggs with cheese, onion, basil and garlic seems good for the legs, too. Maybe there is liver congestion or kidney congestion causing vein problems."

NETTLE TEA

01/16/2011: Lyn from Sydney, Australia writes: "Just thought I'd let u know of something I'd heard of to assist varicose and spider veins : stinging nettle tea. I'm pretty sure it's not an overnight cure, like most worthwhile cures. It is full of vitamins (A, C, E, B's and K) with important minerals (magnesium, zinc, many more) and of course, other agents, which a scientist could explain, and even more that, apparently, they can't yet! I have started taking it, just one cup A day. In about a week or so I will increase it to two cups per day. I have some varicose veins, which are sometimes very noticeable, and sometimes not. I also have spider veins. I'm also 15 weeks pregnant. I am taking Ted's lemon juice and baking soda remedy. I love it. Haven't noticed a difference in veins though. Maybe that's because of my pregnancy.

Anyway, I will let you know, in awhile how I am going with the nettle tea. Has anybody else had success with this???"

OIL OF CYPRESS

BETTER BUT NOT CURED

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  08/02/2011: Elin from The Hague, The Netherlands writes: "Varicose veins unfortunately run through our family. My grandmother suffered from them, as does my mum and when I was in my early 30's, I was diagnosed with it as well. I have had Phlebitis and my right leg has been operated on. My veins aren't visible on the outside; my legs look smooth, but upon touch it feels as if there are cables inside my calves.

Most annoying is the feeling of 'heavy legs'. On warm days, my ankles swell up despite the support hoses I wear every day.

But am seeing great results using essential oil of Cypress with Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) as carrier.

I make a small amount of salve which I apply twice a day, or more often when it's warm weather or when I expect to do a lot of standing and walking. The reason I make a small amount is I like it to be fresh.

The recipe is simple, two tablespoons of VCO; 15 drops of Oil of Cypress. Personally, I started with 7 drops to test for allergic reactions, none came, and the dosage of Cypress could be increased. Store in a glass jar, essential oils eat away at plastic. Keep in a cool place.

Apply twice a day on feet and calves, even thighs if you want or need. Massage gently and only stroke upwards. Works great to reduce fluid retention around the ankles, and my legs don't feel as "heavy".

Hope this helps!"

He is doing a study to prove sleeping on an inclined bed makes a big difference with both vericose veins and edema. Check it out for yourself. You do not have to spend a penny to try this. He would appreciate any feedback you can provide to him. I have been sleeping on the incline for 10 weeks now and see improvements in edema. Maureen"

They recently got painful and severly swollen for the first time and the women at the health food store recommended rutin. Within 3 days all the swelling was gone, even the painless swelling that persisted since childbirth disappeared. I have poor circulation and sometimes in the dry months get itchy swollen varicose veins behind my knees. This has not been a problem since taking the rutin supplement. A good complement to this herb is horse chestnut, especially for those with varicose veins."

TED'S REMEDIES

12/01/2008: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand writes: "A varicose vein is a sign of blood thickening and possible blood clot, and a blood clot is potentially dangerous, obstructing the heart, and we call it heart disease, obstructing the brain and we call stroke, obstructing the legs and we called it varicose veins. There is a much simpler disease that describes all three condition: blood clot. Scientist prefer to call them platelets aggregation. Now if we continue to use highly specialized words, we won't ever know the real cause of the condition. For doubting Thomas, is best to get a live blood analysis and just look at all the blood platelets clumping together. Vitamin E, and blood thinners such as aspirin may also help, but my findings is blood clot is influenced by bacteria (pathogens), excessive protein (leadng to blood thickness), metabolic acidosis (acid blood precipitates, and hence clots), heavy metals (free radicals) and of course, excessive calcium which accelerates blood clotting, leading to a major circulatory problems, and that leads to lower oxygen, and hence lower immune system. Blood circulation and oxygen is everything. People can't see we are strangulating ourselves quietly whenever blood clots forming varicose veins, and if they become large enough, and clots in the leg, those clots may travel to the brain causing stroke, to the heart causing heart disease, and they are all the same condtion.Theefore, I believe it is important to monitor the condition of our blood circulation. It's as important as oxygen. Just think of it this way: if blood circulation is constantly obstructed, then blood reaching the heart is limited. When this happens, it's no surprise that a heart can't beat without normal circulation to the heart muscles reaching it. Magnesium also helps heart muscles to relax so that it can beat more normal. Excess calcium causes heart to contract but can't release itself, while magnesium helps in relaxing and thus enable circulation to normalized. Therefore magnesium supplements, such as 500 mg may help too for heart condition."

THANKS TED....IF I USE MAG CHLORIDE IT IS IN 25MG/10 DROPS. THAT WOULD BE 200 DROPS A DAY TO EQUAL 500MG. OR, DOES THIS LIQUID WORK DIFFERENTLY BECAUSE THE PACKAGE RECOMMENDS 10DROPS/DAY?

ALSO, WHAT ABOUT MAGNESIUM TAURATE FOR THE HEART?

THANK YOU!!!"

I dissolve it cold water and then add hot water and apple jelly and drink it. My nails and hair been growing fast also. Be sure to buy the unflavored gelatin as you don't want to be ingesting the ones in the Jello packets that have additives."

Inclined Bed Therapy (IBT) Varicose Veins Study.
Inclined To Sleep Inclined Yet?

Dear Reader:
We are seeking more people with varicose veins who are willing to put IBT to the test and feel that this is something that your readers and colleagues will definitely find fascinating and some who have varicose veins and oedema and wish to avoid surgery may want to Help in this important trial and join our Free study which has already produced positive results in only 4 weeks as predicted!

News Release:
An Important Scientific Study into the cause of Varicose Veins and Oedema and Inclined Bed Therapy (I.B.T.) is now underway, which makes use of the way the body uses gravity to move solutes through the vessels to improve circulation and alter the pressure inside the veins to significantly reduce swelling and oedema. Our study is free for anyone to participate in. There are no products to be sold or marketed.

What is Inclined Bed Therapy?
Gravity was identified as the driving force behind circulation in trees in 1994 and was applied immediately to how circulation in the body benefits from the same interaction with salts and sugars in the circulation. A video showing the use of IBT with spinal cord injury can be viewed here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3D7tBQfCxQ

IBT is simply tilting the bed so that the head end is 15 cm's or 6 inches higher than the foot end providing a level but tilted bed, hence the name Inclined Bed Therapy.0 People with varicose veins, oedema (fluid retention) are needed to participate in an online Diary Study, in order to prove that simply altering our sleeping position can have a positive affect on these problems.

If you or someone you know has Varicose Veins, the standard advise is to raise your legs and tilt your bed the other way to IBT, Or to undergo risky and expensive surgery that is prone to fail because it does not address why the pressure inside the vein causes it to bulge.
Which according to current physiology books makes sense. But what if that logic is incorrect? All the evidence from our study is showing that gravity is not a force we are struggling to overcome but a force that drives the fluids within the body.

Are you prepared to take the 4 week challenge and provide us with your observations? Or do you know someone who has varicose veins and would like to watch them slowly but surely shrink and improve every night they go to bed instead of becoming more unsightly and uncomfortable?

Our study is located on the Naked Scientists forum, who have a regular slot on BBC Radio. http://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/index.php?topic=9843.msg121037#msg121037

My wife's calf showing clearly her varicose vein shadow, which went flat after 4 weeks of Inclined Bed Therapy back in 1994 and has not returned to its former state since. http://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/index.php?topic=9843.msg121037#msg121037

Alun has already confirmed my statement on the study thread that Varicose veins will shrink after 4 weeks of IBT and has supplied us with photographic before and after 4 weeks of IBT along with a diary account of his observations. And he is not alone. http://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/index.php?topic=9843.75

We are hoping to find at least 50 more pioneering volunteers who wish to avoid surgery and it's inherent risks and failures, who are willing to provide us with photographic and a written account of their own experiences sleeping inclined.

So far our study is running towards a predicted outcome that flies in the face of current physiology literature.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely, Andrew K Fletcher"

I happened to see around the same time, the Varicose Vein Study presented by Andrew K. Fletcher Paignton, Devon U.K

I arranged, and have been using my bed in inclined position head end 5 inches higher than feet end. This resulted in benefit on total absance of snoring for my wife.

On a critical reading of this study, it occurred to me that I need to change the inclination of feet end 5 inches higher than head end to address my problem of varicose veins.

I am hesitating if I do this, again my wife's snoring may reappear.

I wish to know what are all the benefits/ disadvantages that can be expeted with IBT - with feet end higher to head end.

I request Andrew K. Fletcher Paignton to comment/ advise on this."
