Cure Ulcerative Colitis

Updated: 11/04/2009

rss feed

Ulcerative colitis is a disease which causes inflammation and sores (ulcers) in the lining of the rectum & colon. When inflammation has killed the cells that usually line the colon, ulcers form and then bleed and produce pus. Inflammation in the colon also causes one to go to the bathroom frequently, causing diarrhea.

BAKING SODA

1 WORKED TEMPORARILY

10/31/2008: Rob from Wellington, UK writes: "Hi. I have mild UC. Hyperbaric oxgen and hydrogen peroxide have helped me. I was reading all about sodium bicarb and colitis. Would doing an Bicarb enema be a good idea in this case? Re finding ones acidity levels is it litmus with urine and saliva? Thanks Rob"

[WORKED TEMPORARILY]  09/03/2007: Daniel from New Plymouth, New Zealand writes: "I just tried taking baking soda for ulcerative colitis and it seemed to make things worse. I got a ph test kit and my ph seems to be alkaline most of the time anyway. as my ph came down after taking the baking soda my bowel got better. Not sure whats going on but it is very weird. what to do?"

09/07/2007: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Daniel: An ulcerative colitis is caused by a certain bacteria that is needed to kill them, a baking soda alone and alkalinity would not work as well, without the added magnesium citrate and perhaps some zinc supplements. One simple remedy, which had to do with ulcerative colitis was about a 1/2 teaspoon in one full glass of water using milk of magnesia plus 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda in a full glass of water, would have reduced the pain along its path by killing off, at least initially, but since magnesium hydroxide is poorly absorbed, a magnesium citrate 250 mg/day is still needed along with some zinc acetate supplements.

As to why baking soda causes acid urine, it is a result of the hyperosmolarity of sodium portion of the baking soda causes the acidity inside the cell to rid of easier. Apparently the improvement condition came as a result of intracellular fluids being acid to leave the body in larger amounts causing the extracellular fluids to be acid, resulting in a more acid urine. This little known fact is mentioned in medical enclyclopedia at the time I was reading up on alkalinity. To prevent this kind strange occurance, it means the body needs more alkaline electrolytes using both potassium citrate and magnesium citrate along with the baking soda. Since obtaining potassium citrate are relatively difficult I think it is more easy to find the magnesium citrate, which may be found in the ingredients of some common laxative medicine. However, the dose taken is much smaller than as per instructions on the bottle, about at least anywhere from 1/4 to 1/10 less than whatever is mentioned. But technically a 250 mg of magnesium citrate is about 1/8 teaspoon of magnesium citrate, roughly speaking and that is mixed in 1 full glass of water.

So the simplest possible remedy is 250 mg of magnesium citrate plus 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda with 1 full glass of water.

If magnesium citrate is not obtainable some temporarily relief is possible from just the use of milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide) plus baking soda as previously mentioned and perhaps a twice a week dose of 50 mg of zinc acetate or zinc gluconate are possibility. The ulcerative colitis should reduce whenever the body has sufficient amounts of magnesium. Diets low in magnesium and low in alkalinity is what causes the bacteria of the ulcerative colitis to flourish, based on my experience.

In summary baking soda alone is not sufficient to kill off the ulcerative colitis and in a severely acidity of the intracellular cells (inside cells are acid) this may cause a temporary dip in pH and shows up acid urine readings. This can prevented with the use of alkaline intracellular minerals such as magnesium and potassium, in small amounts when taking the baking soda also. One thing I am certain: a sodium citrate, which simply 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda plus 1/4 teaspoon of citric acid, won't cause a drop in pH, since citrates are an intracellular component, while the sodium is an extracellular fluids. A baking soda might get this problem now and then. But it must be noted still that if baking soda ALONE is used, it takes about two weeks for the body to attain sufficient alkalinity without a drop in pH (acid reading) since it takes time for the body to rid of tha acid OUT of the intracellular acid fluids"

09/12/2007: Daniel replies: "Thank you Ted. I did not explain myself very well I took baking soda and citric acid together for two days. It made me feel a bit sick on both occasions. I got the ph test kit the next day and then saw that my saliva ph and urine ph were above 8. my bowel had got worse after taking this 2 times over two days so I stopped taking it. I have kept checking my ph and after stopping, my ph came down but remains at about 6.5 to 7.0 and my bowel has settled a bit. I will try taking magnesium and zinc as you have suggested. my saliva or urine ph has never gone below about 6.4 since I started checking. do you think taking the baking soda and citric acid would still help? I take steroids and should be acidic but seem to be more alkaline than what is mentioned as normal 6.4. Side note: the antibiotic ciprofloxacin is the only thing to ever work on my ulcerative colitis but does not work like it used too. So it is a bacteria that is the cause of my ulcerative colitis at least. Once again thank you for your help"

09/14/2007: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "In event the urinary pH and saliva pH is above 8, baking soda is not to be used, and a more appropriate remedy to modify is to take the magnesium and zinc supplements. Usually sulfate reducing bacteria causes destructive colitis and low sulfur foods may also help in addition to magnesium and zinc. In event the pH is high, it would indicate a different sickness altogether, but in the meantime lower sulfur foods, magnesium chloride supplements and zinc acetate is the preferred solution for people with alkalosis (rare), instead of acidosis. Alkalosis is not good news either, as it indicates the body lacks chlorides or loss too much chlorides from either medication of salt free food. In that instances, 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt in one liter of water would be helpful, and apple cider vinegar taken without the baking soda will offer the best help to normalizing the pH and correcting the chlorides lost."

09/25/2007: Daniel from New Plymouth, New Zealand replies: "Thank again Ted I have been trying magnesium and zinc and baking soda mix as you suggested and have had some success. This time I felt better shortly after taking the solution after 2 day morning and night I had less almost no bleeding But then a strange thing happened. The next time I went to the toilet I had bad bleeding and my stool felt hot and burning my ph was 7.5 urine and I tested my stool as best I could and it was about 8.0 saliva was 6.0 and I was getting a bit of reflux odd yes but I will see how thing go in the next few days. Any suggestions would be great Regards"

09/30/2007: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "It takes about 2 weeks at least for the body to adjust its pH completely. While the remedy is not 100%, a tiny amount of potassium citrate or potassium bicarbonate is needed as a small tweak, such as 1/8 teaspoon of potassium citrate to the 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda. As the body tries to recover, it does need some vitamin C, although a sodium ascorbate form is more safer generally not too much is taken so that it can heal such as 250 mg of sodium ascorbate for example. The ulcerative colitis major remedies, are still the baking soda, magnesium and zinc nevertheless. It is a bacteria that grows whenever the body is deficient in certain common minerals (magnesium and zinc), but also pH. It should be noted that certain other kinds of bacteria also tend to flourish in a high metal environment. However, some chinese parsley may also help slowly remove the heavy metals, but the most important factor, I think is to avoid sugar, vegetable oils, and high fat foods."

10/14/2007: Daniel from New Plymouth, New Zealand replies: "Once again Ted Thanks your information has been great. I have been getting better The bleeding is nearly gone. but I still get hot runny stools do you know why this could be? This happened when I first took baking soda and when I take it for a few days in a row but not sure. I also get a bit of Abdominal pain at this time to. My urine ph is good mostly 7.5 8 when I test it. Is this just a side effect of taking baking soda or maybe taking a bit much."

10/25/2008: Rebecca from Fremont, CA replies: "Ted, How many times a day on the simple formula mentioned? Once a day or three times a day? And is it best on an empty stomache or does it matter? Thank you for this website!!! Rebecca :)"

BAKING SODA AND MAGNESIUM CITRATE

1 YEA

[YEA]  09/25/2008: Heidi from Mt. Pleasant, Iowa writes: "Hi all, I just wanted to post my success with the baking soda and magnesium citrate remedy. I got really sick late June and found this website looking for a cure for ulcerative colitis. I had extreme bloating, diarrhea, pain, cramping about 4 hrs after I ate anything. I began drinking glass after glass of the baking soda (1/2 tsp) and magnesium citrate (1/8 tsp.). I also took magnesium and potassium vitamins. The baking soda drink was the only thing that gave me relief from my pain and bloating. I finally got better after about 2 wks. Was feeling good and quit taking it. Relapsed and began drinking it again. Got better in exactly 2 wks. I am feeling pretty good again. It has been 2 wks since then. I finally got some tests done at the hospital a few days ago and tested positive for bacterial overgrowth in my small intestine. That's funny since I'm feeling fine now. I can imagine what the numbers might have been when I was at my worst. Thanks so much Earthclinic! This remedy was my lifesaver."

11/03/2008: Heidi from Mt. Pleasant, IA replies: "Hi Ted, I have been using the baking soda and magnesium citrate formula for my condition for several months along with magnesium and potassium vitamins. While it does help it is not clearing up my problem. I was diagnosed with an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine and tried the antibiotic route of Flagyl for about 6 days before quitting as it made me so much worse. Is there anything else I can do to kill this bacteria off? I have been doing the heavy metal cleanse of garlic, olive oil, and cilantro 4 days on and 3 days off. I was eating a clove a day for 6 days but my kidneys began to ache and hurt. Thought I was detoxing too fast so switched to the other remedy. I am also taking aloe vera juice, ocassional slippery elm, dandelion capsules on my off garlic days, licorice root capsules, and I just bought some activated charcoal. Going to give it a try. Also going to order some hydrogen peroxide. Also, is this bacteria the same type that causes the UC or something different? I also tested myself via the "spit in the glass test" for candida and was positive. I take coconut oil capsules and eliminated virtually all sugar and bread from my diet and tested again and it was not there anymore. However, I still have other symptoms of systemic candida that also coincide with flare ups of this intestinal bacterial overgrowth. Wondering if candida is the name for this bacteria overgrowth that dr.s tested me for but they do not recognize candida as a disease? What do you think? "

[YEA]  03/18/2009: Judy from Toormina, N.S.W. Australia writes: "I would like to tell you for 7 years we have been trying to find a cure for our daughter Natalie with chronic ulcerative colitis, she was just about to have her colon removed when a friend told us about black strap molasses. Within a week of taking 1 teaspoon daily she has been in complete remission and said she has never felt better am so grateful. I have been taking it too and have found a big improvement in my well being and nervous system. regards Judy Harrison"

06/09/2009: Joseph from Boston, MA replies: "Hi Judy, This is an amazing story. I have tried just about every natural and prescription treatment to get my UC under control. What is the update on your daughter? Is she still in remission? Does she take the blackstrap molasses daily? I just bought a bottle and figured I would give it a try."

06/30/2009: vandu from Silver Spring, MD replies: "Hi Judy, I'm also curious, as I'm having a bout of colitis. I wanted to do a liver flush series after reading Andreas Moritz's book "Amazing Liver Cleanse." But since I've been having colitis symptoms, I'd like to first give my body a chance to heal from this.

Please let us know if the Black strap molassas is still working. I'm wondering what would happen if it's mixed with or eaten with Turmeric? Wow..that may be a great affect no?

I usually have some turmeric in my food (i'm indian), but now adding more, and I may get the supplement, plus aloe vera, and try to the black strap molaassas. Also read in Ayurveda book that Licorice Root enemas are great to do for colitis symptoms."

07/23/2009: Lori from Delta, CO replies: "Judy, I'm curious, is your daughter off meds and taking the BSM? My daughters Dr. doesn't want to take her off her meds since she's been in remission for 7 months. I would like to get her off all meds. How is she doing now?"

2 BETTER BUT NOT CURED

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  05/24/2009: Kathi from Huntington, New York USA writes: "I have had ulcerative colitis for 46 years now. For much of that time I have not had medical insurance and therefore through necessity had to investigate naturopathic remedies. I have had great success with a combination of diet (avoiding most white flour and sugar products when I can and adding vegetables, fruit and I still do not get along except for apples and cantalope) and 1/4 cup aloe vera juice (I use one formulated for digestive problems) with 1/2 teaspoon of l-glutamine. When I had attacks I used the formula 3x daily. I have to avoid milk and milk products but I use soy milk for calcium along with copious quantities of steamed broccoli. Surprisingly I can eat cruciferous vegetables without the problems most people have. I try to eat only organic meats and in season grow my own vegetables. The foregoing has given me a real measure of control for the last 15 years before that it was on and off. Purported remedies would work for a while and then stop working. Last year I discovered probiotics in an over the counter preparation forumlated for crohns and colitis sufferers. I can now say that I feel normal. I was interested in some of the suggestions in the posts and will try them. There is no cure for colitis, but it can be controlled when you pay attention to what you are putting in your body. Reducing stress is ideal but not practical in our society."

[YEA]  08/19/2007: Marion from Las Vegas, USA writes: "I had ulcerative colitis for ten years and had seen a gastroenterologist for all those years. I was taking all kinds of medicines like Asacol and prednisone, etc., when after a while nothing seemed to help, my Dr. suggested that I may need to get a colostomy. Well I thought "unh unh no way", so I came across this book written by Jane Heimlich "What your Doctor Won't Tell you"(I believe she was the wife of the man who invented the Heimlich Manuever). In the book I read a section that was about a man named Dennis Burkitt and he studied tribes in Africa that had no colon problems whatsoever, and he stated it was due to their diet as opposed to the western diet full of dairy, sugar and fat. They ate no dairy, or flour products just truly whole grains, no sugar very little fruits, they ate lots of vegetables and legumes and little lean meats. This was probably a primitive type diet. I tried to eat as close to that diet as possible, by eating whole grain bread (with the seeds in it), no dairy, sugar or fruits, no fats, gravies, sauces or syrups. I just ate lots of fresh vegetables mostly raw some cooked, mostly fish, only water, some fresh cooked beans, some seeds and nuts. ANd lots of prayer to God It didn't take long for things to turn around and I can say that I did not have to see my Dr. ever again. I have since adjusted my diet to incorporate some stuff moderately. My colon does not have a problem anymore. But if I was to return to eating alot of the wrong foods on a regular basis I would be right back where I was before."

FOOD ALLERGY TESTS

1 QUESTION

[YEA]  12/02/2008: Marie from Huntsville, Arkansas writes: "Food allergy test cured my ulcerative colitis. I had severe ulcerative colitis for 18 years. Medicines helped suppress it, but being pregnant or nursing for 10 of those years, I wouldn't take medicine. Tried lots of alternatives,..oils, alfalfa juice, they help some. Got tested for over 100 different food allergies and found I had an allergy to eggs. I quit and all symptoms disappeared in 1 week. I noticed it returned with avengence after drinking alot of almond milk, but it stopped when I stopped drinking it. You will need a test that detects IgG-mediated (delayed) food allergies. Go to optimumhealthresource.com for info on the test I took. You can do it yourself at home if you don't have a doctor to administer it. It's expensive, but it saved my life. I've been symptom free for 3 years now."

[QUESTION]  01/19/2009: Susan from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada replies: "I was interested in Marie's response about the allergy testing. I have severe colitis as well. I do believe in the allergy testing. however, I was curious how she did for 10 years without meds before the testing. I could not possibly do that without getting very very sick. I am curious to know how she did that."

FRUIT ENZYMES

1 YEA

[YEA]  05/13/2008: Kim from Riverside, California writes: "A couple of years ago, I was diagnosed with colitis. I went to the doctor constantly with diarherra, pus and bleeding. I was having pain after every meal and at one point, was losing a pound a day. My doctor told me that I would have to stay on a diet of soft foods. I found a book on the internet called "Crohns and Colitis". The author talked about eating a strict fruit diet. I starting doing it and the symptoms that I had been suffering from for over a year left me. The enzymes in the fruit made all of the difference."

06/21/2008: R.M from Stanton, Ca, USA replies: "Fruit smoothies works as good as prednisone, though the prednisone has to be tapered of gradually. Without fruit smoothies, flare ups occurred even with prednisone and asacol. Not a cure, but a great help. Lets put it this way, I am NOT on prednisone (praise the Almighty), which is really MORE than I can ask for. One cup; made from all fresh fruit with 1/2 tsp of soy protein (from the powder mix). BTW, I also gave up black tea, except if constipated, and reduced all sweets except when I go on a binge. Also, DARK Chocolate in VERY SMALL quantities (an ounce?) helps shut off any symptoms of GERD."

07/06/2009: Debra from Bradenton, FL replies: "I must agree with the fruit enzymes. I was diagnosed with colitis over 8 years ago & suffered everyday around 4 pm with severe cramping & diarrhea. I tried many remedies & cut out certain foods. Nothing really changed. 4 years ago, a frozen custard shop opened in my neighborhood. I was hooked. 5 nights a week I would get a vanilla custard with strawberries & rasberries. A week after I started eating it consistantly, I noticed my symptoms subsided. Today, I may get an episode once every 3 or 4 months. And that is usually due to going out of town for a week & not eating my berries."

L-GLUTAMINE

2 YEA

[YEA]  04/18/2009: A Roper from Sydney, Australia, NSW Australia writes: "I recently had a flare of UC, got home from hospital feeling about 50%, kept taking the steroids (50mg), salofalk (2 grams), colifoam twice a day and wasn't seeing any improvement... so, after doing some research I added 5mg 3 times a day of L-Glutamine to my routine 30 minutes before meals and saw improvement almost immediately. I'd say I'm 90% to remission and I've only been taking the stuff for a week. I haven't felt this good in 2 years.

I also take a probiotic once a day, 5mg metamucil at dinner and 25mg aloe juice first thing in the morning, but I've been taking those for awhile and although they help, I don't believe they resonsible for this major improvement.

It should be noted that my UC is so bad that traditional medicine has not been effective at keeping me in remission and my doctor said if I have another flare I have to have surgery. L-Glutamine may just save me yet."

10/13/2009: A Roper from Sydney, Australia replies: "Just wanted to update: I have not had a flare of ulcerative colitis since February 09 and as much as I believe L-glutamine has helped, the main thing for me has been avoiding antibiotics. I realised they were causing my colitis. Change of season, sinus infection, antibiotics, flareup.... I picked up on the pattern and isolated the issue. I'm perfectly healthy now and don't think I ever had ulcerative colitis - just a reaction to antibiotics."

[YEA]  02/09/2009: Carol from Toronto, ON writes: "L-Glutamine (high dose): Upon the suggestion of a nutritionist I went to see, she claimed she didn't have a single ulcerative colitis patient that didn't respond to a supplement called "___" by ____. It has a high dose of L-Glutamine along with other herbs like Slippery Elm and Marshmallow Root and not much else (sorry I don't have a bottle here). It's a powder you mix with water every morning 1/2 hour before you eat anything and you need to do this for 3-5 weeks before you see results. And let me tell you I was shocked in 3w when it finally went away after over a year of daily attacks.

The premise of how it works is that when you have impaired digestion, your body doesn't break down proteins efficiently causing you to become deficient in amino acids. L-Glutamine is the amino acid necessary for rebuilding you intestinal wall which sheds itself every 5 days or so? and without that amino acid becomes damaged. By giving yourself pure form, in liquid (requiring no digestion of pills etc) you give your intestines what it needs to make a healthy lining. It was really mad at the time that something so simple recommended by a nutritionist of all people cured my colitis when I had spent huge $$$ seeing naturopathic Dr's, chinese herbalists and acupuncturists, some of which helped temporarily but the L-glutamine was the magic ticket for me.

It took a lot longer for my digestion to return to normal but the L-glutamine totally took care of my diarrhea, spasms and bleeding in 3w of faithfully drinking it every morning.

I just wanted to mention to be wary of psyllium fiber. The first ND I tried gave me a supplement so close to the one that worked but it made me worse and I know now that I can't take psyllium fiber AT ALL, but I can handle the flax fiber in this drink. And I also discovered that multi-vitamins cause me to bleed. I can only take whole food vitamins. Two things you might want to watch out for."

05/15/2009: Michael from LA, CA replies: "You mentioned that is took a lot longer to get your digestion back on track, what was your key to success with that??

Thank you thank you,
Michael"

11/03/2009: Andrey from Moscow, Russia replies: "I'm suffering from UC for a 5 consequtive years with few short remissions due to hydro-cortison and salofalc therapy. MMS

[YEA]  09/09/2008: Aggie from Chicago, Illinois writes: "I was browsing the Internet for anything that would help my Ulcerative Colitis. I have had it for about 10 years (I may not have it any more though ;-) ). The thing that worked for me was Miracle Mineral Solution (MMS). Most people are skeptical because of the word "Miracle", but I highly recommend it. "Don't knock it, until you've tried it." It's basically Sodium Chlorite / Chlorine Dioxide. You may want to do a little bit of research, but it wasn't that bad for me at all. I would go into details, but it takes about 20 pages to describe. I have a log online. If you want the log, just contact me and I'll send you the URL.

I can eat virtually anything I want (I'm still getting used to being normal again). The "treatment" took about 2-3 months, but I feel BRAND NEW!!!!"

EC: Yep, we're hearing a lot of great things about MMS, especially from Joyce.

11/14/2008: Matt from Staten Island, NY replies: "hey can you please send me the url to more info of this MMS solution that helped you ? thanks."

11/16/2008: Joyce from Joelton, Tn replies: "Hello Matt, You can google Miracle Mineral Supplement and download the first half of Jim Humble's book for free, it has a nominal fee for downloading the 2nd half of his book. He is a very interesting guy and his long time persistence in trying to get this information out to the general public is to be commended. It is rather lenghy but interesting reading.

For a short summary of how it works and what it does, you can pull up the reference that mentions MMS - "no miracle, just wonderful chemistry". I think this fellow's site calls himself the Phaelosopher.

Have fun reading."

11/19/2008: Ana from USA replies: "Please send me the online log. I am interested where did you get it from and also did you take any other supplements/medicines etc with it. I hope your online has all these details. Thanks!!"

12/02/2008: Aggie from Chicago, Illinois replies: "Well, it turns out I may have spoken a bit too soon or went off of it a little bit too soon. I have been having a few issues lately. Either way, I am back on the MMS again and now I'm not sure if the effects are Herxheimer or UC now.

Also, I reread the MMS protocol again and it turns out I never actually finished the entire process. So, I attribute this second coming to that. I only did the 15 drops about 5 times total. It turns out, you're supposed to do the 15 drops twice a day for an entire week.

I'm not sure if the URL will get cut or not, but the log is at:

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  05/12/2009: Allison from Houston, Texas writes: "I have ulcerative colitis (UC) and have to take mesalamines everyday to keep it under control. I agree with Ted from Bangkok that UC is caused by bacteria related to the acidity or PH in the intestine. Thus, I am trying to increase the PH of my gut by increasing intake of magnesium. Things that I find helpful to minimize loose stools include: 1 tablespoon L-glutamine on an empty stomach first thing in the morning along with a capsule of B-complex vitamin and vitamin C to help increase absorption of the amino acid. 1 tablespoon of sweet dairy whey (this is different from whey protein) that some health food stores may carry. The sweet dairy whey helps me to be able to take magnesium supplements without getting the runs or diarhea everytime. I don't notice any difference when I take prebiotics (i.e.: FOS, Inulin) and probiotics (yogurt, acidophilus), but I take them nontheless as I figure it doesn't hurt to supplement them."

05/14/2009: Dj from PDX, OR replies: "I had colitis for years. My doctor put me on the little purple pill and it of course helped mask the symptoms. I finally wanted off all my meds so she suggested I start drinking a fiber drink.

The drink coats the stomach and allows for healing. I started off drinking it before meals then slowly reduced my intake to only in the mornings. It took a few months but I have never had colitis again. I continue to drink fiber in the mornings not only as maintenance/preventative but because it is good for me. I have changed over to a natural rice fiber from the chemically produced store brands. Be careful at first as you may swing between constipation and diarrhea until your body levels out. I took acidophilus to increase the good bacteria also.

Meditation helped with the stress that was contributing to my condition. Some days I would listen to music or just sit in a chair for a while and stare into space.

Don't get frustrated the fiber takes time but it was well worth the effort.

Good luck."

RAW FOOD DIET

1 BETTER BUT NOT CURED

[YEA]  08/25/2008: Tamara from Valencia, California writes: "Recently I started having symptoms of Colitis (diarrhea, blood in stools, upset stomach, nausea, etc.) I did research on the net and found a web site where a man had colitis for 8 years, in and out of the hospital, almost had to get a colostomy bag. He decided to go "natural" and has been symptom free for 24 years. His secret: a raw foods vegan diet!!! I started the diet and my symptoms have gone away!! within 4 days I felt and looked better. I have lost 17 pounds in 1 month and feel great. I truly believe that a raw foods vegan diet is the answer to ulcerative colitis. Give it a shot and see for yourself!!!"

08/26/2008: Angie from Sparta, USA replies: "Tamara, could you give me an idea on what you eat on your raw food diet? Also, what kind of protein do you substitute for meat? Thanks, Angie"

08/26/2008: Angie from Sparta, USA replies: "Tamara, could you give me an idea on what you eat on your raw food diet? Also, what kind of protein do you substitute for meat? Thanks, Angie"

I started a raw foods, vegan diet that is comprised of mainly fruits and vegetables. I will eat almond butter, brown rice, and almond or soy milk. I probably eat 80% raw vegetables and fruit, but I will steam vegetables sometimes. I also juice fruits and vegetables. The more you cook something, the more you are killing the nutrients your body needs. I also eat what is called an "organic food bar". These have 14 grams of protein in them, and I eat one of those a day. I also take an amino acid complex (derived from vegetable sources) daily, in the morn. on an empty stomach for better absorption.

If you can make it to a natural foods market, or even the library, you will be able to find info on a raw foods diet (also try online).

I just know this, that I have never felt better in my life than I do now after being on this diet. Hope that helps, and I am sorry that took so long, my computer was messed up and just got fixed."

[YEA]  09/21/2008: Kim from Riverside, CA replies: "I followed the same diet and my symptoms left me in about the same amount of time after a year of suffering. I ordered a book from a website (not sure I can post it here). The author claimed 100% success. It sounds like the same book."

08/02/2009: Mohammed from Birmingham, West Midlands, england replies: "hi there tamara could u plz tell me if ur uc has gone compelety and if raw food diet really wrks thanks"

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  09/08/2009: Joseph from Lawrence, Ks replies: "I decided to try the raw vegan diet after years of nothing else working. Mostly fresh fruits and vegetables, sometimes steamed. Salads, smoothies, nuts, seeds, berries, srpouts... I'm pretty sure we're all talking about the same author, the one that comes up if you search for vegan and ulcerative colitis.

After a few months it was like I never even had UC. It was crazy, I hadn't felt so good in years, if not better. I only ate like that for about four months, then I adopted it into my own diet. It's been a year and a half and I'm still doing great. UC doesn't really affect my life anymore. No more medications, no more pain, no more being confined to an area with a nearby bathroom. If I do get a flare up, it's because I ate something I knew I shouldn't have. There are rare occasions where I will suffer for a food I miss eating (like fried stuff). I still eat a vegan diet, but maybe 60-70% of it being raw. I just love cooking too much. I see the raw vegan diet as a great way to heal your body, but I don't think it's sustainable for most people. You can use it to let your ulcers calm down and then incorporate large amounts of fresh, raw, organic produce into your own diet, which is much more doable for most people. "

10/16/2009: Tamara from Valencia, California replies: "Mohammed, I am sorry it took so long to get back to you. I haven't been on the website for quite a while. A raw foods diet has worked perfectly for me. As long as I continue to eat whole foods (fruits and vegetables) as the majority of my diet, then I am free from any symptoms. When I try to incorporate other foods into my diet (bread, sweets, any fast foods, etc.) my symptoms reappear. Staying on this raw foods diet is quite a challenge at times, but it is truly worth it. I can almost guarantee that your symptoms will disappear if you stick to it! Happy eating and God bless!"

REMEDIES NEEDED

09/13/2009: Reeba from Hong Kong, Hong Kong, Hong Kong writes: "Hi,

My husband has been suffering from Ulcerative Colitis for the past 4 years. His disease got into remission for few months after taking ASACOL. But now it has returned and the medications arent doing him any good. He is having bloody stools and very painful abdominal cramps. His large intestine seems as if someone is rubbing salt on it. He has stopped going to his job as well and is very despressed. I was just searching on net about this job and came across this website. Could you please tell me more about the cure for this disease? My husband seems so fed up with it and i'm very worried about his health. He has lost 7 pounds. Does baking soda really help in this matter? Is baking soda and baking powder the same? Do you think he should start drinking it? Please reply asap as we both are really very worried.his health seems to be getting worse. Your kind, quick reply would be highly appreciated. Thanks"

09/13/2009: Kathy from Dubois, Pa replies: "Ulcerative colitis can be a symptom of celiac disease, and many people get relief when they go off gluten entirely.

p.s. celiac disease can appear at any age."

09/14/2009: Mazen from Amman, Jordan replies: "Dear Reeba,

The inflammatory process of the intestines should be helped with half teaspoonful of Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda) and half teaspoonful of citric acid powder(crystals) mixed in half glass of water and stir until the reaction stops then drink it on an empty stomach early thing in the mornig and before going to bed (you can add a third dose in the middle of the day on an empty stomach also), remember not to eat anything after it for at least 45 minutes. This should go on for 5 days and stoped for two days and so on. This is Ted's remedy and it really helped greatly with ulcerative colitis patients.

Hope yur husband gets better.

M.E"

09/15/2009: Reeba from Hong Kong replies: "hi Mazen,

Thanks for your feedback. Last night my husband had a very severe pain in his intestine due to that ulcerative colitis...I didnt have any Baking Soda at home so I gave him half teaspoonful of baking powder instead. Are there any differences between the baking powder and baking soda? I'd like to know where I can find the citric acid powder (crystals)??? The Baking Powder that I gave my husband contains Corn starch, raising agent, sodium hydrogen carbonate, monocalcium phosphate. Is that ok? I'm nervous about him getting some other side effects.....did i do the right thing??? please reply asap.

Thanks alot
Reeba"

10/17/2009: Donna from Taunton, Ma replies: "Hi Reeba,
I'm sure you've had a chance to get baking soda by now, but to answer your question - no. Baking powder is not a substitute. I'm on this site looking for info too, as I suffer from chronic UC. I'd suggest reading through all the info. Problem is there doesn't seem to be any one cure (or remedy) that works for everyone, at least that's what I've found from my extensive research. The only way to go is to try things that multiple people swear by, and give them enough time to work. That could be up to six weeks . . . unless they are making things worse, in which case ditch that and go on to the next. I'm going to be trying the raw foods diet next, even though it goes against conventional wisdom and my own experience. I've heard enough good reports about it to make it seem worth a more organized attempt. Juicing definitely seems helpful to me . .. carrot, celery, beet . . . cabbage and spinach are supposed to be very good too, for these problems. Coconut water (not milk, as yes, it's in the health food section) calms me in the morning. Also, a Tbl. kuzu powder dissovled and heated until translucent, with (or without) a little umeboshi paste creamed in after heating is great. The kuzu (or kudzu) is healing for the intestinal lining, while umeboshi is very alkalizing. It should be taken morning and night, but any amount will help. These are suggestions from my experience, along with noticing if certain foods make it worse, and reading over a site like this one to benefit from others' experience and give you ideas for what to try. Good luck."

10/17/2009: Donna from Taunton, Ma replies: "Oops! I forgot to say that if you're still looking for citric acid (or anything) you can just do an online search and you'll get resources. I'll check back in after trying this diet. I plan to do mostly raw foods, with some fish, not sure about other protein sources yet . . . and lots of mostly vegetable juice, including wheat grass--which I'm going to start growing today."

SLIPPERY ELM

2 YEA

[YEA]  12/05/2008: Carl from Leeds, West York UK writes: "Colitis: Slippery Elm Powder

Slippery elm kick-started my return to good colonic health. After enduring several years of extreme colitis symptoms I spent a whole week without food except for a teaspoonful of slippery elm powder mashed with banana. It can be mixed with water but it is a bit of an art. I preferred the banana method.

This was taken first thing in the morning and again in the evening before bed. Sipping only water all day, taking hot baths and lots of rest. Going to bed no later than 9 or 10 O'clock ensured that my colon had plenty of opportunity to heal itself.

The first 4 days were spent feeling weak and lethargic but I feel that it was my body busy repairing itself. By day 7 I was symptom free. From then on it was a matter of avoiding harmful food and drinks and generally living a less stressful and abusive lifestyle.

The slippery elm powder I am convinced gave me the encouraging cure start that I needed. Follow my blog at www.colitis-free.blogspot.com

[YEA]  02/06/2007: Diane from Minster nr Ramsgate, UK writes: "I would like to recommend pure slippery elm powder (not slippery elm food which has flour in it) to help with acid reflux. Slippery elm when made up into a milkshake type drink (see tip at end of this for making it up without lumps!) has soothing properties, lines as it goes down, and is also nutritional. My children used to have slippery elm mixed with fruit such as stewed apple or apricots or banana as a cereal when they were bubbies. They loved it. Anyway, re: acid reflux - it will not instantly make it go away but will help soothe some of the symptoms and calm the volcanic eruptions a bit if drunk fairly frequently, especially when one has the symptoms of heartburn or sore throat etc. I think used in conjunction with yoghurt (or even better pre and pro biotic capsules) and the apple cider remedy, as well as of course changes to ways of living, it would be very good. I cannot say it will be as I have not tried the ACV remedy yet - but I intend to! My husband has ulcerative collitis and drinking slippery elm has really helped him as well as natural anti-inflammatories such as turmeric, taking pre and pro biotics, and taking linseed oil. Has anyone tried ACV for ulcerative collitis btw? Oh before I forget...I said I would give a tip for making up slippery elm without the lumps. This is how my hubby and I do it: Put two heaped teaspoonfuls of slippery elm in a mug. Bring kettle to boil but before pouring into mug, put a covering of cold water over the powder in the mug. DO NOT STIR yet though but stir as you are pouring in the hot water. Leave some room at the top for adding milk (we use soya milk btw as this suits my husband's UC more, but other types of milk are ok if you can drink them)."

SWEET WHEY

1 YEA

[YEA]  10/23/2008: Greg from Media, PA writes: "After years of suffering on and off with inflamed colon, I have finally found something that works. The colonics people don't like to hear this and I'm starting to believe that they are trying to supress this information. We have been told that we should take pro-biotics to help re-establish our friendly bacteria. I find this to be only partially helpful. It seems that there is a way to reestablish the friendly bacteria in the colon and that's by feeding your bacteria with the ideal food and that's Sweet Whey. I didn't find this on Earth Clinic so I decided to post this. I am hoping to find others that have tried this product to hear what I have experienced confirmed.

I first read this several years ago in Acidophilus and Colon Health by David Webster. Sweet Whey cured my inflamed colon. Other positive side-effects are a floating feces and better smelling too.

I will admit that I was skeptical at first trial. I asked my colonics provider about the use of sweet whey I went so far as to loan my book to her. It took me three years to get my book back. I tried and tried to get it back but to no avail. So I stopped taking the sweet whey and my colon problems came back. Finally when I got my book back I started back on the sweet whey. After reading the book more thourughly I realized why she kept it. If it's this easy to cure some colon problems. Why would you need colonics. I know that this is not entirely true because there are other reasons to have colonics.

The ph balance talked about in regard to ACV prompted me to write this because I feel may be as essential as balancing your ph. Restoring your friendly bacteria. I'll be looking for other feedback."

10/26/2008: Catherine from Wellington, New Zealand replies: "Q? What is sweet whey? Is it the same as whey protein ie a dried powder, or the whey left after making junket? There are many things on the web not available here so I would appreciate your comments. Thanks."

10/28/2008: Catherine from Wellington, New Zealand replies: "Further to question about sweet whey... Have discovered some info which I am sharing in case others wish to know.

Sweet whey is a product of the cheese making process in which RENNET is used. Junket is made with rennet and after setting, it can be cut with a knife and strained thru muslin, the curds make a simple cottage cheese and the drained liquid is the whey...Now as a child I happily drank the junket whey and it was sweet and refresshing to the taste, so I'll start doing the homemade cottage cheese again and, like Miss Muffet, eat my curds & whey. Thanks to all the wonderful people out there who share their cures for the benefit of all."

04/02/2009: Joseph from Boston, MA replies: "Hi Greg,

I am curious to hear more about sweet whey. How much did you take when you started seeing results? How are you doing now?

-Paul"
