Apple Cider Vinegar Remedy for Hair Loss
Holistic Treatment Ingredients
- Apple Cider Vinegar - 1 Teaspoon
- Filtered Water - Large Glass
Adding the apple cider vinegar (ACV) tonic to your daily diet can increase your digestive acids and enzymes, improving your overall nutrition and health thereby giving your body the ability to grow a healthy head of hair. Take one teaspoon of ACV (honey optional) and mix it in a large glass of water. Drink this ACV Tonic with breakfast or at each daily meal. You can then slowly increase the apple cider vinegar in each glass of tonic to as much as 2 tablespoons.
[YEA] 04/16/2007: Vincent from Tampa, Florida: "I'm a college student and spent most of my money on car insurance, rent, books and college tuition. I have a problem with my hair, it constantly shedding every day for the last 4 years to the point where i can see different bald spot on my head. I tried prescription shampoo, over the counter, scalp sensitive shampoo and different type of shampoos but nothing work. After finding out about this website about cleaning your hair with apple cider vinegar, out of desperation, i gave it a try and at the first week, it didn't seem to work but i kept on trying for a month and i begin to see result. My hair isn't falling as much and in fact, i don't see a large lump of hair on my hand every time i shampoo any more ( i only see 2-5 pieces of hairs). My scalp feel clean, my hair is shiny and smooth and even my hair stylist noticed and complemented me."
[YEA] 05/13/2006: Wayne from Oakville, Ontario, Canada: "John wrote that taking Apple Cider Vinegar has caused his hair to grow. I had heard this from one other person about a year ago. In their case they massaged it into their scalp. I'd be interested in hearing testimonials from others out there who have had similar, positive experiences. I have just begun taking ACV orally for weight loss - am I soon going to have a full head of hair again?"
[YEA] 04/26/2006: John from Hesperia, CA: "I took Apple Cider to dissolve Gallbladder and kidney stones. I stopped getting kidney infections and can take vitamins again; I had to stop taking vitamins because it increased kidney discomfort. It appears as a side effect that my hair is growing back on my head."Replies
08/19/2008: Brandon from Baton Rouge, Louisiana replies: "Good afternoon. I have a question to everyone who has stated that ACV has helped re-grow their hair. The question is how long did it take before you saw the results? 3 weeks, 3 months, what?"
[YEA] 11/26/2009: Brenda from San Luis Obispo, Ca replies: "Last January I started using Apple Cider Vinegar to help with post holidy weight-loss. About 3 months later I noticed that I had 1 1/2 inch sprouts of hair all over my head, particularly at the crown. I tried to figure out what caused this and the only change I had made was the ACV. I Googled "ACV, hair regrowth" and there it was! My husband started taking it and within a week we could see little hairs growing where there had only been shiny scalp before! He told the guys and work, and everyone who has tried it found it worked for them! Amazing! I was taking about 1t at first. My husband 1-2 T daily with a little pinch of baking soda. We also started taking kelp tablets to help with the iodine depletion that sometimes accompanies ACV treatments. Another side benefit: my acid reflux is gone and my husband's snoring is greatly reduced."
01/07/2010: Bc from Melbourne, Vic replies: "Does anyone know anything about whether acv affects iodine absorption?"
[YEA] 05/27/2010: Gina from Sydney, Nsw Australia: "QUESTION FOR TED
FIRSTLY, THANK YOU SOOOOOOO MUCH FOR THIS REMEDY ACV BICARB SODA. MY HAIR HAS STOPPED FALLING & NEW GROWTH HAS APPEARED. I DIDN'T THINK IT POSSIBLE TO GET MY BEAUTIFUL HAIR BACK AGAIN!!
TED CAN YOU PLEASE TELL ME WHAT IS IN THE ABOVE REMEDY TO REGROW THE HAIR. I AM VERY EXCITED AND INTERESTED TO LEARN HOW THIS WORKS?????
05/28/2010: Francisca from Michelbach-le-bas, Alsace, France replies: "Gina, what is the remedy exactly and how do you use it?
As an update to my hair problems I have to say that I made a huge mistake. I decided to dye my hair at home, something I hadn't done for a few years. When I found a dye which worked in 10 minutes I was quite happy. Why wait for 30 minutes with that stuff in your head? But after using it I started to lose hair again. I think that this happened because this stuff is maybe stronger than the 30 minute one so I will never use it again. Anyway, next time I will try one from the health shop."
[NAY] 01/09/2009: Al from Deerfield Beach, FL: "I have been losing hair for almost 3 yrs now. the process is slow though. it began a little bit behind my forehead line. It seemd rare that it began there b/c I've seen the MBP pics and they're not similar. And no one in my family is bald. I'm only 25 yrs old and have alot of hair for most part. I have been taking ACV with baking soda., for a month now. But I still dont see any results. I also put some ACV on my head but dont see much difference. Although the ACV did help with the dryness of the bottom of my feet. The bottom of my feet are smooth now. Can you help me out?? I'm really desperate."Replies
01/09/2009: AR447 from Austin, TEXAS replies: "I am also young with no history of hair loss in my family, but had been experiencing hair loss, slowly and gradually since I was 20. I am now almost 30 and have been having success with monthly acupuncture and chinese herbs taken twice daily. My hair loss was a result of a kidney deficiency which is actually pretty common. western medicine refused to acknowledge other possibilities aside from anemia and hereditary balding. I was desperate too but am starting to see some results. It's only been 6 months but I am hopeful."
01/09/2009: Rosy from Orlando, Fl replies: "Stop using shampoos that have chemicals in them, SLS especially. This is a web site with more info. I stopped using shampoos with it in if for dandruff, and itchiness. Worked like a charm!
[QUESTION] 01/10/2009: Al from Deerfield Beach, FL replies: "hey AR447 from Austin, TEXAS -- have you seen hair growth after taking acupuncture and chinese medicine? And on what part of your head have u been losing hair? Have you been doing the acupuncture for 6 months? Do you eventually stop?"
01/10/2009: Joyce from Joelton, Tn. replies: "Hello Al,
Are you using a dandruff shampoo such as Head & Shoulders, Zincfrin or any other shampoo with the same active ingredients.
When I was using them, I found myself losing hair until it suddenly dawned on me that it had started a few weeks after switching shampoos. Worked fine for the dandruff, but the hair loss stopped when I threw out the dandruff shampoo. I know several other people who lost hair from the same products. I find the dandruff problem was corrected by using 50/50 apple cider vinegar and warm water final rinse after shampooing."
01/11/2009: Al from Deerfield Beach, FL replies: "Actually Joyce I'm not. I used to use regualr shampoos but lately Ive been using organic ones. I cant explain it. I mean I remember I used to take hydrocut to lose some fat in my stomach, years ago. I dont know if that might have cause my hair to fall out slow. Its been 3 or 4 years that my hair has been thinning."
12/15/2010: Jeffrey from Austin, Tx replies: "Hey AR447... There is a new product on the market in Austin from a company called ManeGain.. They have it in 6 or 7 salons around town, and it has been proven to regrow people's hair naturally without chemicals or drugs... They even give a 100% money back guarantee. Good luck!"
01/26/2011: Vee from Ft. Hood, Tx replies: "Well, my hair has been always been thin on the sides, but for the past 5 years since I was diagnosed with fibroids, I see that my thinning has become worse. I was diagnosed with anemia because of the fibroids & I thought this & the medicine that I was on caused the hair loss. Recently, it has become really bad & I almost have no hair on the side of my head but fortunately have enough hair to cover up the bald spot. I see that you mentioned that your hair loss got worse when you used dandruff shampoo. Well, I have had so many changes happen in my body due to this illness & dandruff is one of them & I have been using Head and Shoulders Every time I shampoo, and my hair loss has been worse. So I'll stop using it & try other remedies mentioned here and update when I see results!"
[YEA] 07/11/2008: Jarad from Auckland, New Zealand: "Bach Flowers For Hair Growth.
First off, thank you for this fantastic site. It has really helped me.
I will give you a run down of my situation as I feel it's all-relevant in some way or another.
For many years, about 17 years (starting when I was 21) I have been worried about my hair, which has always been quite fine. Because I thought it was thinning I read all I could and searched out remedies etc. As I didn't want to admit it to anyone I felt isolated. I really worked myself into a state by constantly checking in the mirror at home and where ever I went. The problem with this is that all mirrors have different lighting and some lighting makes hair look thinner etc. It was like I wanted confirmation and then some way of tracking the process so I could see if what I was trying as a remedy was working. I tried topical herbal solutions. One called Nioxin (the shampoo basically makes your hair thicker). This made me feel better but it didn't really help my state, which was basically, secretly underneath it all,...anxiety. But I kept spending $ on these things and vitamins. I had developed a kind of dread. I had real insecurity.
I visited a few natural doctors, Chinese, Ayurvedic etc. about this and general things. I discovered I had quite low blood pressure.
I started using Tumric, fennel, Cumin, Basil, Cardimon, Coriander and Cinimon.
I went to a herbalist who muscle tested me and reckoned that my thinning hair was caused by dairy products and hormonal reasons. I could cut out the dairy, but the hormonal thing, I had no idea why that was. But I got herbs off her to deal with this. And I felt better.
She also said my tests told her that dipping my head bellow my knees regularly for 60 seconds would help (I thought at the time this was silly. But now I think it's a very good idea).
I was always looking at other men to see if they where balding as a way of either feeling better that I had more hair than them or thinking "Oh no that's how I will be".
I had a very uncomfortable feeling. I would wake up feeling gutted. So did a lot of meditation to deal with these awful feelings. But I was addicted to looking and checking. My scalp felt tight so I randomly massaged it.
I had a hair analysis test about 3 years ago and went on a homeopathic detox because of high lead. It also showed Amalgam. After this detox I took Chlorella tablets for months. By this time I had decided that my thinning hair was because of stress and these heavy metals. This test also said I had a Thyroid issue, being under active (Even though I'm quite skinny).
I kept using the Nioxin topical treatment (which really just makes hair look thicker I think).
Over the years, at times I perceived that my hair was getting thicker, but I think it was just as it was at the time just different lighting and hair cuts. And after this sense of wow its growing thicker now, I would then have panic attacks when I saw in certain lights that it was indeed getting worse.
Its all about the tracking and gauging what's happening and then the reaction + or -. A real roller coaster of emotions. My state was not about acceptance. It was a battle.
What I felt all along, deep down, was that "This is not how things are meant to be" This is why I was searching for a remedy. Not just because I was vain. Maybe this is because there WAS a solution to my hair thinning, I didn't feel acceptance of my condition.
About a year and a half ago I started to seriously search the inter net for cures. I found lots of herbal remedies and was about to send off for some but thought I would just go the local health food shop and get the free herbalist to make me up a combo of the herbs these products contained, Saw Palmetto etc, for DHT blocking etc.
I did this for 6 months or so. I didn't perceive much difference.
I went to my Anthrosophic doctor about 10 months ago who suggested I take Iscador (Mistletoe homeopathic by Weleda) by injection, which I did myself. This he said would boost my immunity and cause my hair to grow thicker. I was taking it 3 times a week. You must have this prescribed to get it and use under supervision.
I was taking Saw Palmetto, Thyro Vital Complex (with L-Tyrosine, Withania, Kelp, vitamin + minerals) Life Stream's "Skin" (Aloe Vera, Horsetail, Gotu Kola, Grape Seed) Vit B complex, Fish Oil. MRI brand "Multi Complete" and Cell Salts (all 12 combo). Also I have always and still have a good, natural, hole food diet with small amounts of meat and fish.
At this time I found the Earth Clinic web site. I started the suggestions; rubbing my fingernails together. I also took a deep breath, dipped my head bellow my knees and while holding the breath, gently pushed my fingers from my neck down my side burns and down my forehead and held at my hairline for a few moments, Then coming back up and breathing out. I did this morning and night.
I also started using a Plumb Blossom Hammer, which is a small acupressure tapping hammer with little needles. I was tapping my scalp all over till it was all red twice a day.
I perceived that my hair was in fact getting thicker by this regime.
Shortly after this I became very emotional and upset about other things. I thought that these issues where caused by the Iscador, or the scalp tapping, so I stopped and my regime was crushed. I soon felt that my hair was once again thinning. I also felt the Saw Palmetto wasn't really doing anything. On top of these stuck feelings I realised I had an odd ringing in my left ear that sounded like mores code. I was beside myself! I felt like my body was malfunctioning, and I was looking and checking everything trying to track these new rapidly appearing symptoms. I called all kinds of practitioners to find some clues to it. I was physically exhausted through lack of sleep from the stress.
I got great relief from a Japanese acupressure technique called Shin Jin Jitsu. This really helped my emotional turmoil, amazing.
I went to a Homeopath who gave me a homeopathic called Wiesbaden (aqua 5c, use under supervision of Homeopath). This he said would grow my hair. He also said that the Plumb Blossom Hammer does work but that I didn't need it, just his remedy. I took it for about a month 3 x a day. Not sure if it worked.
I went back to the Anthrosophic doctor. My Thyroid was normal now, and so too was my blood pressure (which had been low)
My scalp started to smell this I think was from using the Plumb Blossom Hammer. I got rid of the smell by applying coconut oil over night a few times as suggested on Earth Clinic. It worked.
I got my last Amalgam filling removed and went back to the Earth Clinic web site and found the Oil Pulling suggestion. I did this and my week feeling, sensitive gums felt better. I was also inspired by the promised heavy metal removal. So I did it every morning (and have been doing so for 6 months). I do sesame mostly. Coconut oil works for my sensitive gums, just twice. Weleda Herbal Toothpaste (silica based).
I did the oil pulling while fingernail rubbing for 10 minutes each morning. Then two glasses of water one with cider vinegar. Deep breathing and head below the knees for a few moment regularly over the day. I also started the hair brushing suggestion on this site, which I did twice a day.
So now back to my hair worries. I felt this terrible knot in my stomach, and at times in my heart. Again at this time I went to a place I had gone to 4 years ago that helped me sort out my health. They use a machine that reads the meridians from my fingers and toes. This gives a picture of how the organs are functioning inside the body. The practitioner is very skilled at the choosing homeopathic treatments and diet based on the readings.
(They can test substances on the body also. Most of the vitamins tested they on me where fine but the COATINGS on the tablets and capsules where BAD (So I recommend washing the paint like gunk of your tablets and empty the capsules out). They said that as the tablet goes through your body it is accompanied by this coating and your body will reject both as waste not nutrient.)
They ultimately said my body was not absorbing nutrients because of my emotional imbalance. They prescribed me a Bach Flower combination. This really helped. I went back and they gave me a new combo to deal with other emotional issues, my absorption was getting better with my feelings. The following month they said my absorption of nutrients was even better. I told them that the yucky feelings where pretty much gone, I was feeling like myself again. They then prescribed another homeopathic and a new combo of Bach Flower remedies, but this time for my SCALP. Some how they ascertained that my scalp was stressed and this was why my hair was thinning. I was to put 5 drops in an eggcup half filled with good water and then simply apply it to the whole scalp twice a day.
The combination of Bach Flowers would be dependent on your personal stress reasons.
Within two weeks I had noticed a change in my scalp. Deep down I felt that this was the real solution! I ran out of Nioxin shampoo and stopped it. It tested no good for me anyway. I also stopped the Plumb Blossom Hammering.
The next visit and they said my absorption of nutrients was excellent now and I was feeling so much better.
Into the second month and my hair is definitely getting thicker.
My dad is going bald and his dad is bald. So I had figured maybe its just hereditary. But my dad didn't start thinning till he was in his late 40s. But I also know that this was probably his most stress full work heavy time of his life being self-employed. So I feel that it is actually stress in my family that is the issue. I have been self- employed for 17 years and quite a stress sensitive person. This is held in my scalp but the Bach Flowers relax it. I will see what happens now that this cycle has been interrupted with continued use.
So if it is stress for you, try Bach Flowers. It's also no good having uncomfortable feelings full stop. These must be relieved for good health and proper nutrient absorption.
I am not sure exactly if it's just the Bach Flowers applied to the scalp or if it's a combo of the oil pulling, rubbing nails together, hair-brushing technique etc. Or maybe the removal of my amalgam fillings.
I figure that doing it all can't hurt. But listen to yourself above all.
THANK YOU AGAIN EARTH CLINIC!!! (I tell every one about you. One guy said the Oil Pulling fixed his gum infection)"
04/29/2009: Tim from Manhattan, New York replies: "thank you Jara for your in depth report! I would like to ask which Bach remedies worked for you? I sometimes take the Rescue Remedy but not for hair loss. ...thanks"
01/02/2010: Linda from Chipley, Fl replies: "What is fingernail pulling and rubbing fingernails together all about?
I am 67 and my fingernails look terrible from wearing fake nails for years and years (I think thats why)
I am so excited about Earth Clinic, I have told several people about it. One lady told me using ACV or CO sounded like voodoo. lol I dont think I will have to listen to her story about her arthritis anymore though."
EC: Hi Linda,
Not sure where the original post about fingernail rubbing is on the site! Some kind of acupressure technique... Anyone know?
P.S. The only voodoo remedies on the site in on the warts page with an astounding 19 YEAS!!http://www.earthclinic.com/cures/warts7.html#VOODOOREMEDIES
06/28/2010: Brian from Pelham, Nh replies: "I've bought a book on this once it involves rubbing the finger nails together together for 15minutes twice a day. its reflexology it sais that fingernails are a direct path to the follicles it takes a few months but it does work, just alot of work just to have hair. look up balayam on the web......good luck"
04/02/2011: Flo from Vancouver, Bc, Canada replies: "Hi Jarad:
What were the 2 Bach flower remedies given to you? One for stress , the other for hair loss?cheers, Flo"
[YEA] 01/31/2008: Quetzalcoatl from Tampa, USA: "The men in my family lose their hair. As one of those men in the family, I did too and expected to do so..... No one really feels bad about it and each of us have enough "game" LOL that we never feel bad about ourselves THAT SAID Strangely it has not been in the usual MPB pattern .... Just a consistent thinning starting in the 30's..... SO for one month the guys decided to secretly agree on an experiment ..... every other day we pour aluminum FREE!!!! baking powder in our DRY hair, rub in into the scalp, let it sit for 15 minutes and wash it out (no shampoos ever and no metrosexual gel or styling!!!! THEN every other day we add 2 tablespoons of ACV to our tea with as much AGAVE nector to sweeten the flavor flav.(hehe) 2 months later we all noticed less hair falling out and NEW hair growth .... its been over a year and comparing pictures of the guys at thanksgiving the past year and pictures this year and the results are clear and affirmative. worked for us. IMPORTANT: we dont eat red meat."Replies
11/22/2008: Julie from Sydney, Australia replies: "Was it baking powder or baking soda you used?"
EC: Good question! Usually people refer to aluminum-free baking soda.
Info from The Cook's Thesaurus website: http://www.foodsubs.com/Leaven.html
Baking powder is a mixture of one or more acidic salts and baking soda, an alkali. These two compounds react when they get wet and release carbon dioxide gas bubbles. These, in turn, cause baked goods to rise. Baking powder is perishable. To test a batch, add 1 teaspoon to ½ cup hot water. If it doesn't bubble, throw it out. Look for baking powder among the baking supplies in most supermarkets.
baking soda = bicarbonate of soda = sodium bicarbonate = bicarb = bread soda
Equivalents: One tablespoon of baking soda = 1/4 oz = 7 grams Notes: Baking soda is alkaline, and when mixed with acidic ingredients, it reacts and releases bubbles of carbon dioxide. These bubbles, when trapped inside batter, help baked goods rise. Baking powder contains baking soda, along with acidic salts that react with the soda when they get wet or heated. Recipes that call for both baking powder and baking soda are probably using the baking soda to offset extra acidity in the batter (from ingredients like buttermilk or molasses) and to weaken the proteins in the flour. Omitting the baking soda from these recipes may alter the color or flavor of whatever you're baking, and make it less tender.
[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 08/22/2010: Angelo from New York replies: "I have been waiting a little over a year to write this letter expecting better results than what I have. Unfortunately, I believe the benefits of fighting Male Pattern Baldness with baking soda and ACV may have been exaggerated. I've been using ACV & baking soda since Aug. 9, 2009 (today is Aug. 22 2010) and the difference in my hair regrowth is only slight at best. The shape of my head is still quite visible. I've found that drinking horsetail tea on a regular basis and adding it to the ACV rinse helped with the MPB even more so but again only slightly. However, until something better comes along I'm going to continue using baking soda & ACV because it's a wonderful treatment for dandruff. Also, every shampoo & conditioner I've investigated contains Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and/or Sodium Laureth Sulfate. These two chemicals are what are used to make soap nice and lathery but they also destroy hair follicles. I must also add that baking soda & ACV restored my hair color. It didn't get rid of the gray hairs but restored the youthful shine & got rid of the dullness that comes with age. As I continue the baking soda & ACV treatment, if anything should favorably change, I will make sure to write."
08/24/2010: Alfred from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Okay lets talk.. I am 83yrs young --6 month ago all my hair, mustache & beard pure white.. Eye lashes and brows black. I started taking PP. I thing the HA will do more for you than what your now taking. PS if u can take that large pill, that will work better. Stay well

[YEA] 09/27/2010: Shary from Centennial, Co: "My son has had increasing hair loss due to the drugs he takes for a seizure disorder. Based on the recommendation of a dermatologist, he began taking 2,000 micrograms/day of biotin. This was about 2 months ago. He has stopped losing hair in the shower and the hair on his head has thickened. Biotin is available in healthfood stores."Replies
09/28/2010: Cheryl1999 from Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada replies: "I read on about.com that people with a history of seizures shouldn't use biotin unless under the supervision of a qualified health practitioner."
03/22/2011: Brenda from Mt. Dora, Fl replies: "Regarding the previous post, www.whfoods.com states that a symptom of BIOTIN deficiency is seizures. BIOTIN is readily available in egg yolks, tomatoes, romaine lettuce, carrots, almonds, etc. "
[SIDE EFFECTS] 03/27/2013: Mira from Strathclyde, Scotland, Uk replies: "I took 900mcg of biotin for about three weeks recently for eyebrow growth. Although I got new eyebrow hair growth, I also developed itchy bumps along my jawline that started to spread to other areas of my face. Not pleasant! I have reduced the dosage to 300-600mcg a day (which I've been doing for a couple weeks) and I have experienced a few bumps here and there but no real itching. No obvious hair growth yet either."
[YEA] 08/28/2009: Leelannee from Sussex, Nj: "YEA for biotin (hair loss)
YEA for iodine & borax (dandruff)
After the birth of my son 15 years ago, I had more hair loss every time I brushed or washed my hair than I had ever had before. I always had long, almost waist-length, thick hair. After the birth, I became so distressed over the thinning, dryness, & split ends that I cut my hair to chin-length. I kept trying to grow it long but every few years "chopped" it again due to split ends. My hair is medium-coarse and never seemed thin to people who cut my hair but I could tell the difference.
About a year ago I started taking biotin. I take 5mg per day, and I get a bottle of 300 capsules (10 months' supply) for $12, so this is a very affordable, no fuss remedy! It took a month or two to notice a real difference, but my hair loss became minimal. My hair is now so thick, and has grown past my shoulder blades for the first time in 15 years! Also, there are very few split ends--even though this doesn't make much sense, as only the new growth would be affected by the biotin, but it's true (a few months ago I bought some very sharp scissors and trimmed my split ends, but they haven't come back). And my hair is growing a little faster; it used to grow no more than 1/2 inch per month (I color my hair 3-4 times per year, and occasionally measure) and now it is growing almost 1 inch per month.
Another hair problem I had for about 20 years was dandruff. This started when I was 16. I tried many, many supplements, diet changes and topical remedies over the years with no results (except for a liquid zinc treatment for excema--this helped but didn't cure). I eventually tried a dandruff shampoo, which would give me relief for no more than 24 hours. I really didn't want to do this, but if I didn't I would actually get scabs in addition to incessant itching & painful inflammation.
A few weeks ago I bought a "liquid kelp" iodine supplement, took a dropperful twice a day in water and within 48 HOURS I had ZERO FLAKES! This is after 20 years of discomfort, self-consciousness, and not being able to wear black or use nicer shampoos! I recently found another supplement that has 150mcg iodine per drop, and I take 2-3 drops per day.
About 2-3 weeks after starting the iodine, I had a VERY slight return of the dandruff. But now I am not using dandruff shampoo at all. I shampoo, douse my scalp with a borax solution (1-2 tablespoons in 2 cups of water), let that sit for a couple of minutes, then condition. My scalp is super clean, I can go several days without shampooing (when I had the dandruff I had to shampoo every other day), and my hair seems softer & less frizzy."
09/08/2009: Leelannee from Sussex, Nj replies: "Okay, the iodine doesn't seem to be working as well for the dandruff anymore...still working, just not as miraculously. About a week ago I had a massive outbreak of flakes on the top of my head near my hairline. Having read that milk of magnesia is great for skin & itching, I impulsively doused that area, left it on for about 1/2 an hour, then rinsed it out--without using shampoo or conditioner, to make sure nothing else affected my "experiment". My hair felt like it was full of glue and baby powder (washed out fine the next day), but it seems that Milk of Magnesia really helps the dead skin slough off!!! I had to brush out lots of flakes but since then my scalp has been pretty clear, and much less itchy.
I also patted some Milk of Magnesia on my face and let it dry. My skin was SO soft afterwards, for days, and a couple of rough rashy patches are cleared up!"
09/10/2009: Rob from Manhattan, New York replies: "re: your dandruff, There may be triggers in your diet that could be causing the dandruff. For me coffee is a culprit. Fairly consistent in that a few days after a cup I will have flaking. I like to make up a tea of Rooibos & Peppermint & sometimes Nettles (though nettles are a diuretic). It seems to have a balancing, & hydrating effect & eliminates the dandruff.
this from Wiki...
Rooibos is purported to assist with nervous tension, allergies and digestive problems. Traditional medicinal uses of rooibos in South Africa include alleviating infantile colic, allergies, asthma and dermatological problems."
02/24/2010: Laurie from Sudbury, Ontario replies: "Hi, is biotin part or the same as taking the b-complex vitamins as my doctor told me a while back only to take b vitamins for 2 weeks at a time. Also, does anyone know if biotin grows hair elswhere as one person told me it will grow facial hair. thanks"
04/14/2010: Laurie from Sudbury, Ontario replies: "I noticed on the bottle of biotin that I am taking is 300 mcg's what exactly is this.
Did anyone ever have side effects from Biotin.I have taken it for a month now and nothing. Thank you"
04/14/2010: J0hnn from Toronto, Ontario Canada replies: "This reply to Laurie from Sudbury...
I used a combination of Biotine, Vegitil Silica, and Chelated Zinc to stop hair loss and regrow natural coloured hair on my head last fall.
A couple of points...
1...the Biotine I used was capsules of 5,000 mcg each. Possibly your 300 mcg caps are not enough for this purpose. Has the hair loss cause been removed?
2...the hair on the crown of your head grows an average of 1/2 inch per month, so if the rest of your nutrition is adequate, you should start seeing some fuzz on the previously bald areas at the 4 to 6 week point.
Hopefully this answers some of your questions."
07/21/2010: Labrat from Burlington, Nc, Usa replies: "My husband started using biotin, silica and zinc for hair loss. But after reading about zinc toxicity, I am concerned about the doses in the protocol I got from JOhnn in Toronto's post. 100mgs 3x/day for first 3 wks. Did I interpret that right? and is chelated zinc, zinc gluconate?"
07/23/2010: Johnn from Toronto, Ont, Canada replies: "To Labrat from Burlington, Nc, Usa. . . Yes, that is the dosage I used. However, if you are concerned with the zinc, reduce the zinc amount only. I have never seen or experienced any problems with this dosage of chelated (organic)zinc and have taken zinc supplements for decades. It is almost always below optimal in older men(prostate issues). I think you can still get the hair results without as much zinc as the zinc in this protocol is for getting the hair to grow in with your natural hair color. Hopefully this answers your questions and you see the same success I had. Regards, Johnn"
07/23/2010: Jay from Toronto, Ont, Canada replies: "To Labrat from Burlington, Nc, Usa. If you are using regular zinc glutonate, only 15 percent of it is absorbed which means only 15 mg of the 100 mg ingested is actually absorbed by your body. Therefore 3x100 mg only nets out at 45 mg actual that your body can use per day. . Again, as I said in my other post, the extra zinc is mostly for the hair color and can probably be reduced without affecting hair growth. Regards, Johnn"
[BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS] 08/06/2012: Karmala from Templeton, Ca replies: "Good news/bad news regarding biotin. It worked great at growing hair.... I actually had eyebrows for the first time in years! But, I wound up with severe migraines. I have tried different brands and different strengths, but ended up with migraines each and every time. Just to let you know that some of us get negative side effects from biotin. I suffer from multiple chemical sensitivities.... not sure if this has anything to do with it or not."
02/10/2009: Tasha from Los Angeles, CA: "Is it true that Biotin can promote fast hair growth?"Replies
03/01/2009: Deborah from Saint Augustine, Florida replies: "I understand that it helps to strengthen hair and if you are deficient that deficiency can represent itself in hair loss. I have also read that it can help maintain your color, slowing down graying hair. It is also good for strengthening your nails to prevent cracking and splitting."
[BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS] 05/11/2009: Guest_Mother from Toronto, Ontario: "Load Many thanks to all who are contributing to this great site. I have been using 1 Tbsp of BSM in milk first thing in the morning for past two months,Vitamin b complex for 2-3 weeks and 1 tbsp ACV 2-3 times a week in glass of warm water for hair loss and gray hair problem. I am 29 yrs old breastfeeding mother of a toddler.
The remedy seems to work for hair loss as i have much better hair now. Gray hair problem is still there, no effect. But my daughter's front teeth have developed brown streaks. Can this be because of the treatment i am using. I do not want to stop as it is working for my hair loss. Please advise."
06/01/2009: Caitlin from Austin, TX replies: "Yes! Those brown streaks are more than likely because of your mixture, especially if she did not have this condition before. I would be very wary of using so much iron while you are breastfeeding your daughter. Babies do not need THAT much iron. When I breastfed my daughter, I noticed that anytime I ate garlic, she would have garlic breath. Also anytime I drank cow's milk (I'm allergic to milk protein) my daughter would have excruciating stomach pains. When I stopped drinking milk, her pain disappeared. PLEASE, be very careful of what you give yourself while you breastfeed. Loss of hair is common after having a baby due to hormone adjustment and stress. I would suggest y9ou simply eat as healthily of food as you can while your body adjusts itself; don't stress over your hair so much right now. (By the way, a good stress soother for you and the baby is stewed apples with cinnamon. Just heat 2 sliced apples in pot or microwave until soft and add cinnamon and eat when warm. I found that my baby would sigh with pleasure whenever I ate this before or while breastfeeding; we both felt calmer and it safely soothed her stomachache) Please go on line and check what excess iron can do to babies and their brains. If it was me, I would wait until I finished breastfeeding before putting such potent (toxic for the baby) concentrations into my body. Please check before going further.. Best wishes for you both..."
10/20/2009: Alessandra from Oklahoma City, Ok replies: "The baby cannot get too much iron from the mother's breastmilk as iron levels in breastmilk are not effected by the mother's iron intake, even if she is anemic. The brown streaks could be caused by a number of things including tartar buildup, which caused significant brown staining on my oldest son's two lower front teeth. I would recommend the mother schedule an appt with a pediatric dentist for a checkup and teeth cleaning."
[BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS] 10/17/2012: Rapunzel from Chicago, Illinois: "May I please address this email to Ted. Ted, I found this site very informative and helpful. I have long hair and am 57 years old and over the past 3 years have noticed my hair falling out, along with seeing a scalp problem get worse and worse. I do remember that a few years ago a strange odor from the crown of my head when I scratched it because it was itching. I would sometimes be in a hurry when I washed my hair and not finish letting it dry by putting it up in a bun on the top of my head! I know that wasn't good and might have contributed to the crown area of my scalp having an odor. I have always had very thick hair until the last 3 years. I now have only 1/3 of the hair I once had.
I went to my doctor and a dermatologist and they had me on topical steroids and prescription shampoos. Which helped ease the itching but it seemed like it spread all over my scalp after that. Also the dermatologist didn't give me any explanations about what caused my scalp and hair problems. So I became desperate and came upon your website and Ted upon your recommedations for washing the hair with borax and water. It was amazing how soft and untangled my hair was after washing with it. My scalp felt very good too.
Unfortunately I began having some strange side effects right away from this such as burning in my chest area and I became very nervous and didn't do the borax solution again. I was so miserable with this burning in my chest that my mother in law suggested I take a tablespoon of her organic apple cider vinegar amish product that had some ginger and garlic in it. I took one tablespoon and had immediate relief from the burning which was probably acid reflux. I dont have a reflux problem usually at all. Could it be that the borax changed the ph of my body? It is a mystery or a coincidence that this happened.
Anyway, now talking about my present situation, for the past 4 days I have been taking ACV (2 teaspoons in an 8 oz. Glass of water) 2X a day. My scalp still feels itchy and there seems to be a slight calming in the scalp but the bumps and scales are still there, but I think my hair loss problem is slightly improving. I don't know what to wash my hair with. When I was in my 30's I took tetracycline for acne and nystatin with it. I took it over a long period of time. I probably messed up my stomach because I have sensitivity in the left side of my stomach or intestinal area I have a problem laying on that side of my body when I sleep at night. Any suggestions, Ted. Thank you so much for your time. God bless you and Earth Clinic!"Replies
10/18/2012: Louwrence from Rustenburg, North West, South Africa replies: "Hi Rapunzel, To treat your scalp problem I will soak it with urine which willqui ckly solve your problem it works."
11/06/2012: Miranda from Campbellsville, Ky replies: "Hi, I'm not Ted, BUT, you might try putting about 1/2 to 1 cup of ACV in your bath water, then taking a container and rinsing your hair and scalp with it when you're threw bathing. My sister uses ACV to soak her feet with, and I've started using it in my bath water sometimes. I'm afraid everytime could be drying. I had some itching and it took care of mine and made me feel good all over. An ACV and water rinse is good for a lot of problems, for instance, it helps with mange on animals. It's because it kills many little bitty no- seeums, mites, mange, lice, scabes, etc. All sorts, and it's healing. If afraid of a reaction, then start with a smaller amount, like the 1/2 cup. Also, if a place is very irritated, it might burn, so I would take a small amount of the ACV/water mixture and just test a small area first. Hope this helps. God bless."
[YEA] 09/23/2009: Kindee from Southbridge, Massachusetts: "I tried this brushing technique for hair loss and noticed a difference within a couple weeks. I really had my doubts, but truthfully I feel that nowadays I have less hairs falling than I ever have.
I always had really thick hair which I took for granted but over the past few years it had been shedding at a more and more rapid pace. It began to look thin, and I had a handful of maybe fifteen hairs nearly every time I ran my hand through it. Naturally I was panicked and self conscious at the age of 23, but was reluctant to use certain topical drugs and other unnatural "remedies." Since starting this technique once a day or every other day, along with decreasing my shampooing to two times a week (three max), my hair has looked great! Shiny, full, and I've had several unrelated unsolicited comments from people I know about the difference they noticed.
All I do is flip my head over and use a boar's bristle brush over all my hair until it's brushed (sometimes this requires pre-combing if it's knotted), making sure not to put pressure on the scalp, and I can feel the follicles being stimulated. Flip back over, brush it all down, and viola, treatment over.
No more clogged drains, no more hairy brush. I also quit eating beef; I wonder if this had anything to do with it? Either way, now I'm grateful for the hairs in my head, even though they're turning gray. Thank you earth clinic."
[YEA] 03/06/2008: Shirley from MO: "I would like to share this with earth clinic and Ted. I found this on the Internet but sorry I don't remember where or I would give them the credit for this simple stop hair fall out remedy.
This person said to use a soft bristle brush such as a boar bristle brush and bend forward at the waist and brush your hair toward the floor. Do not push brush into the scalp but just start at the scalp and brush to the tips. (I use the other hand to hold the hair against the brush) No certain amount of times to brush. When you have all the hair brushed this direction, stand up and now you push the brush against the scalp and brush your hair towards the back or sides with constant pressure on the brush. Again this doesn't have to be done for any certain amount of times, just until you get the hair all brushed.
You can then style your hair. They said to do this 3 times a day.
I only do it twice, first thing in the morning and before I go to bed.
Their statement was this: Your hair WILL stop falling out. Not maybe or should stop.
So that's what convinced me to try it.
I am 65 years old and I have been losing hair constantly over the past few years. I tried a lot of diets, meds, shampoos and even one of Ted's remedies, with no success.
So when I read this article, I thought that's easy and cheap to try. I can do that.
I expected it to take a long time to show up if it was doing anything. To my surprise the hair fallout was stopped the first time I did this technique.
In the past, after each shower, I would have to clean the hair out of the drain or it would clog up.
The very first time I did this brushing there was nothing to clean out of the drain. I was so shocked because nothing had ever worked that fast to solve any problem I've had in the past.
I have been doing this for about 2 months now. The balding spot on the back of my head is completely gone. The thinning part on each side of my head is full again.
I didn't want to tell anyone until I knew for sure I wasn't imagining how well it works.
This person said as we get older we loose something on the scalp but that it's still on our hair, it just won't stay on the scalp. (I'm sorry I can't remember the word he used for that, but I'm sure Ted would know.)
The first brushing we are collecting this and the second brushing we are depositing it back onto the scalp where it is needed.
While getting my hair cut the last time, my beautician told me that my hair was very healthy and so was my scalp. I never had anyone tell me that before. I hadn't mentioned doing this to her. So it's noticeable to others.
08/19/2008: Sad Ger from Singapore replies: "hi mdm, i would like to try your technique but forgive me, i do not really get what you meant. do i brush the scalp out to the hair tip in both direction? is that what u meant?"
08/20/2008: Shirley from Missouri replies: "Response To 08/19/2008 Sad Ger from Singapore:
I hope I can to be clearer about the way this brushing should be done. When you start to brush your hair while you are bent forward and have your hair toward the floor, you start at the scalp but do not put pressure on the brush at the scalp. At this point you don't want to be brushing the scalp but just the hair. From the scalp you brush your hair down to the tips.I use one hand to push the hair into the brush and brush all the hair starting from the back of my neck down to the ends.
When you're finished, you would stand up straight again. Let you hair fall back away from your face and brush from the forehead towards the back or from the crown down the sides. When you begin this brushing, you hold the hairbrush firm onto the scalp and beginning brushing from the scalp with pressure on the brush, and brush the hair towards the back, sides or whatever feels right for your hair.
Hope that explains it more correctly. If not you may send me an email for more info."
08/21/2008: Norma from Austin, Tx replies: "I found the brushing technique quite interesting and am anxious to give it a try. I am 67 years of age and have started losing some hair, so hopefully this will help. Thank you for the info."
11/21/2008: julie from Sydney, Australia replies: "Just to clarify - when I lean forward I hold my hair in one hand, start at base of scalp and kinda glide the brush through the hair to tips. Do I go round the side and front as well? So I'm not really touching my scalp with brush more like feeding my hair into brush at this point with not much pressure at all. More like I want to wipe my hair through the brush. I do this from base down to tip back, side and front. Then I stand up and apply pressure from front to back tips side to back tips and base underneath to tips. Is this correct? Thanks."
11/23/2008: Shirley from Missouri replies: "Reply to; Julie from Sydney You have the idea, I think. There's nothing different about the way you would be brushing your hair anyway. Except you brush the underneath hair first without pressure on the scalp. Then you stand up and you will start to brush your hair as usual only with pressure being applied to brush at the scalp."
[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 11/24/2008: Pamela from Houston, Texas replies: "I don't know if this brushing technique will grow hair back. I don't have a lot of hair loss but some thinning on top thought I would give it a try. Will let you know if my hair thickens up. Thanks"
[YEA] 02/25/2009: May from Portland, Oregon replies: "I want to thank you for posting this, and affirm that this really worked for me! As another poster mentioned, it may not be a hair growth remedy, but it sure does slow or halt the hair shedding. This regiment should be a must for anyone with a certain length of hair. I saw a dramatic decrease in the amount of hairs that I shed while washing my hair, and it is now down to 1 or zero! I had read about brushing with a boar bristle brush on a Long-Hair web forum, in order to decrease the shedding and clogging in the shower, but they did not list this technique and I only tried this after reading it here on earth clinic! Thank you so much!"
