Toothache, Tooth Infection, Tooth Abscess Remedies
"A tooth abscess or root abscess is pus enclosed in the tissues of the jaw bone at the tip of an infected tooth. Usually the abscess originates from a bacterial infection that has accumulated in the soft pulp of the tooth. This is usually, but not always, associated with a dull, throbbing, excruciating ache.
A tooth abscess typically originates from dead pulp tissue, usually caused by untreated tooth decay, cracked teeth or extensive periodontal disease. A failed root canal treatment may also create a similar abscess.
There are two types of dental abscess. A periapical abscess starts in the dental pulp. A periodontal abscess begins in the supporting bone and tissue structures of the teeth." (Wikipedia)

06/13/2007: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand writes: "Traditionally people use clove oil (2-4 drops) to do the mouthwash in 1/4 glass of water will work better as clove has a numbing effect and kill the bacteria also. Dentists also use the clove oil applied directly using appropriate devices, to the area of cavities. Often 1% hydrogen peroxide with baking soda, for me works the best in preventing cavities from getting any larger. However, if the mouth has high number of bacterium, using them a couple of times is helpful. I do it say 2-3 times. The cavities tooth pain goes away quite quickly. The key is to make sure there is no food residue after eating, which means a peroxide mouthwash is to be done after eating of every meal.
The use of either black tea bag, or a green tea (no sugar, no fructose, no milk) is a broad spectrum antibiotics.
Sometimes, if my budget is limited, I mixed a 1/8 teaspoon of tannic acid in 1/2 glass of water to do the mouthwash, with frequent swishing of course! They work too, of course, whenever I don't have green tea or 1% hydrogen peroxide at my home.
In the long run, the key is to make sure the saliva pH exceeds 7 or at least 7. Cavities don't form if the saliva are at this level. It seems drinking green tea occasionally caused the saliva gland to worked better and raising the pH can be done with baking soda 1/4 teaspoon taken twice a day helps a lot in prevention. It must be noted that peroxide reduce the bacteria, but baking soda prevents the bacteria in the mouth from growing (that and no food particles and sugary food).
In other times I can do 2-4 drops of iodine in 1/2 glass of water as a good mouthwash also. It prevents iodine deficiency when this is done occasionally, such as once a week, for example."
--------------04/22/2006: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand writes: "The best cure I can think of for a tooth abscess that helped me is when I mixed a 1/4 teaspoon of potassium carbonate into 1/2 glass of water and use this as a mouthwash. Do it three for four times should reduce the pain in a couple of hours. Basically a relatively strong alkaline solution will usually destroy the bacteria. At least it really helped with my cavities pains.
Also I sometimes mixed sodium perborate also (after dissolving it which takes an hour in water!) keeps my teeth free from the abscess also. If you can't find potassium carbonate, a good alternative might be sodium carbonate, however, I think you might need a little less. Ideally a sodium perborate and potassium carbonate should do the trick. I have also resorted to using H2O2 1.5% as a mouthwash now and then just to be sure also.
However, a longer term solution of taking some vitamin B3 in particular plus a B complex vitamins will help reduce it too. If everything works out as expected, some improvement should be noticed within the next day. The theory is basically simple, the bacteria in your mouth has a weakness against alkaline, for the very same reason why they cause cavities by creating acid to dissolve your tooth enamel which causes tooth abscesses whenever they too get into your gums. Flossing also helps in later stages also. However, if the condition still persist it is best to see your dentist. Oh yes, by the way, take a fairly large daily dose of vitamin C also as it is also helps with tooth abscess, such as 1-2 grams (1000-2000 mg) per day. This will also really help relieve the conditions of fibromyalgia if taken together with magnesium and malic acid (apple cider vinegar is high on malic acid)."

I placed the paste in a small piece of cheesecloth and placed it in my mouth next to the infected gum. I slept with it overnight. The next morning, the infection was gone!!! So Amazing. No more waiting to get into the dentist for an appointment or prescription meds. Activated Charcoal also works great if you are planning on drinking alcohol. I take one capsule for every drink consumed and have no hangover in the morning. Amazing stuff!!"

[YEA] 10/05/2006: Keith from Orlando, FL writes: "Was reading the remedies and just wanted to add the following: I am a medical missionary that uses natural methods of healing. I encounter several different diseases and sickness in my line of work.
One remedy that I have never seen fail for toothache pain, is charcoal. It will stop severe toothache pain in about 20-45 minutes in most cases! I will give you an example with my wife. She begin to have toothache pain last year(2005) around the time of thanksgiving. She begin to call dentists for an appointment; however, the soonest that she could get an appointment was 2 weeks! To make a long story short the pain became unbearable. It radiated all the way to her temple on the side of the bad tooth.
So I took activated charcoal, added a little water, stirred to a paste consistency, placed it on a gauze(a piece of cotton t-shirt could also be used) and placed it directly over the tooth. I had her press down very gently. I then offered a prayer.
In about 12-15 minutes the pain that was radiating up to her temple begin to subside. In about 20-30 minutes my wife, who had been in such great pain, that she was in tears, and was unable to even sleep, dropped off to sleep.
The next day we also started her on a program of drinking 2-3 glasses per day of a table spoon of the charcoal mixed with a glass of water. She did eventually go to the dentist only to find that a small cavity had exposed a nerve, and infection had set in.
The charcoal worked on the infection because it is the inflammation that causes the pain. So by pulling or drawing the poisons from the infection(the underlying cause) the inflammation is addressed.
A friend of mine, who is also a very experienced medical missionary, with more than 30 years of hands on experience, even running a natural clinic in Tennessee for a long time, and having a 45-50% success rate with 4 stage cancer, (conventional success rate with 4th stage cancer is about 5%" gives the following alternative for toothache pain and abscess
These are direct quotes: "Mix 3 tablespoons charcoal,1/2 teaspoon clove oil, 1/3 teaspoon cayenne pepper, ½ teaspoon olive oil (enough to make a paste), and 1 teaspoon of golden seal. He states: " This remedy is strictly for pain in the jaw or tooth pain. Pack this around the tooth that is giving you problems. If you can cover the tooth up it will generate heat. That will remove the pain faster than any toothache remedy. Try it. You will feel the heat and you can go wash your mouth out. If you are in a lot of pain the heat is comforting. The pain of the poultice drawing is less than the throbbing of the toothache.[The mixture] should be quite thick, about the consistency of natural peanut butter. You want to be able to mould it around the tooth, so that it will stick."
The next is for an abscess specifically.
His words: "If you have an abscess with a lot of swelling, you cannot get that tooth pulled until you get the abscess under control. This recipe is famous for getting that abscess down 3 parts Slippery Elm, 2 parts baking yeast, 4 drops cloves, 1/3 teaspoon cayenne pepper. Add a little water, enough to make a paste. It will be gummy due to the slippery elm. Then pack this mixture around the gum. The slippery elm, like charcoal, draws the inflammation, the cayenne stimulates the cells around the tooth to release toxins and the cloves are added for the reputation as a pain remedy, especially in toothache."
[YEA] 07/22/2009: Teresa from Spanaway, Washington replies: "Yes! The activated charcoal STOPPED my TOOTH ACHE within minutes. I opened 1 activated charcoal capsule, poured on saucer, added drops of water, which a made runny paste, put it on my finger and then rub it on the gum above my aching tooth. When the tooth would start to feel like it was beginning to ache again, I added this charcoal mixture, and it stopped the pain."

06/13/2009: Annette from Cuy Falls, Ohio writes: "Several years ago, my husband had an abcessed tooth. A filling had been broken out for some time and we did not have dental insurance. He went to a health food store and asked about a remedy for pain relief. The propietor highly recommended Alpha Lipoic Acid. My husband bought the 50mg caps, which were the least expensive. Back then, he weighed 230 pounds (6' tall). He took 2-50mg caps of Alpha Lipoic Acid every 4 hrs, 4 times daily, for 7 to 10 days, decreasing the dose after the pain was gone.
I can attest to this remedy also, because some time later, I had a toothache that would not quit. I treated myself with Alpha Lipoic Acid. It was kind of like a do-it-yourself root canal. My pain subsided each day and was totally gone within 3 days. I continued to take it a few more days. My tooth is still A-OK 10 years later. Did not require any dental work, even though I've been in for cleaning and x-rays several times since.
On a polar opposite note, I have been reading about Urotherapy - a little known frontier with claims of curing numerous aliments, including various cancers. Each of us have this readily available, tailor-made, built-in health dispenser at no cost. Research online, as it's limited experimental findings are under wraps among med books (has been for years). I did try it myself for a lower abdominal ache, after other natural remedies did not work over a 2 month period. I searched for a cure and found it. After 2 weeks of drinking a few ounces of 'mid stream in the morning', all pain was gone. Never had another symptom of who knows what. No, it doesn't taste bad. Think of it as intended - it's personalized medicine that won't harm you, but most likely will cure you. Do the research. I've found it tried, true and an essential entry in my emergency home care journal."

[YEA] 05/22/2007: kira from Guildford, United Kingdom writes: "For severe tooth pain such as in the case of an abscess, the only thing that has worked for me is 750mg daily Amoxicillin. I have tried clove oil which is extremely powerful but does not kill the pain even if you drink the stuff and can make the pain worse as an abscess is about pressure build up from toxins under the tooth and so needs to be burst in some way.
I rubbed my tooth-brush rigorously on the abscess itself which hurt a lot, but tons of puss and blood came out that needed to come out as it is poison and what causes the pain in the first place. The colour of the puss is like a dark yellow/orange and there is often a huge amount of it if the abscess is particularly large in size. I could not burst the abscess any other way and this is the only real way of doing it and without seriously hurting yourself or your gum.
For general tooth pain not caused by an abscess, the only thing that will stop pain, is medication unless the tooth pain is mild enough to bear it. Very few people can cope with pain and so the ones that can't, they need something that is going to work and that only comes in the form of pills - not garlic, cloves and things on here that are for more tougher folk with stronger pain threshold.
I cannot cope with tooth pain at all and often suffer from abscesses and I have tried everything out there and nothing works except only for strong antibiotics. A mild tooth ache is another thing and anything will work for that as long as it stings and draws out the source of pain such as warm salt water. Dental pain comes in many forms but the worst is by far toothache caused by an abscess and to which the only cure is relief gained by bursting as much of it as possible and with an object that isn't going to cause damage. The toothbrush is the best and only real sure way of bursting an abscess It takes some pounding on the gum with the bristles to break the top layer of the abscess skin, but once you have done it and the puss and blood come, you know then that you have begun to relieve yourself of the pain an abscess does provide.
I talk from experience and with common sense."
03/09/2009: Edwin from Provo, UT replies: "I spent a weekend with a terrible abscess of a lower molar. My right cheek and jaw were swollen horribly. I tried many of the things on here such as cut/crushed garlic cloves on the abscess and tooth, teabag on the tooth/abscess, sea salt water rinse, hydrogen peroxide rinse. Unfortunately, none of them worked so I had to get to a dentist this morning. Luckily I found one with a $1 coupon for emergency exam, xray and consultation. He prescribed 500mg of amoxycillin 3 times a day. That's a pretty strong dosage. Then he went into his sales pitch and told me that for a mere $3,000 he could START to fix all my teeth. Dentists are hucksters and I have not met one who is trustworthy. Anyway, we'll see how the amoxycillin works.
I think I'll still have to lance it and drain it myself. I'll write back and let you know."
05/28/2009: Robert from Ormond Beach, FL replies: "I have had these same problems with unbearable pain and repeated visits to different dentists in hopes of finding one I could afford. Only Antibiotics and prescription pain med really worked, but I was able to hold off the pain for several months after taking antibiotics and then carrying my toothbrush everywhere and continuously brushing, also over the counter Anbesol gel really works for pain relief. I now have the pain returned and had not taken my pain meds prescribed knowing at some point the pain would return and is expensive but now am going to have to go back to the dentist an try again. I am hopefull a new dentist might have some compassion and work with me so I can pay over time, I paid off credit cards years ago and will not go into debt again as that would cause more pain in the long run. I am honest and just wish I could find a dentist that would accept partial payment and allow me to pay over time, so far they want me to fill out an application for a high interest rate medical credit card they have offered at the counter, it's like they are in with the crooked banks, but I am hopefull not all and I will find soon a good dentist with a heart.
meanwhile Anbesol is all I have and am going to try the black or green tea and clove oil mentioned above, it makes sense to change the PH levels and alkaline and I did manage for quite some time after getting infection to go away with antibiotics several months ago, the only thing that differs for me is heat, when I am in the sun it hurts my tooth, but cold water, fresh or seawater brings relief, so I am going to pass on the cayenne based on my own experience. many thanks to all posting on this thread, at least I have some ideas to try what might work.
Thank you"
05/28/2009: DJ from Pdx, Or replies: "Kira and Robert.
In regards to the clove oil make sure you get clove BUD oil. The bud part is very important and works much better than simple clove oil. This should give you more help with the pain. I would of course use the clove bud oil after the salt rinse which is a really good way to help kill the infection.
You can put the oil directly on the tooth and gums or mix it in with oil for a good swish. (yes the same as oil pulling) I use cold pressed sesame oil. All my teeth feel much better afterwards. I find that the longer you swish the better. So 20 mins is better than 5.
Good luck"
05/28/2009: Kristi Amparan from Cleburne, TX replies: "To Robert of Ormond Beach FL Regarding Tooth Abcess:
My son has recently had to deal with tooth abcess and gum pain due to a mouth injury. He eventually had a root canal.
We tried many concoctions, but the only thing that gave him relief from the pain was to make a paste with a very small amount of water and activated charcoal (get this at a health food store or your pharmacist). We put the thin paste on a piece of paper towel and tucked it in between his gum and lip. He left this on for hours at a time. After a few times it helped the swelling, redness and pain. He did this until he could get an appointment for a root canal."
05/29/2009: Marla from KCity, U.S.A. replies: "Try Oil of Oregano (liquid). I had what I believed was an abcess a few years back. My gum was very soar and if my toothbrush even lightly touched that area it was verrry painful. At the time I didn't have dental insurance.
I simply put 3-4 drops of Oil of Oregano in about 1/4 cup of warm water and swished it around in my mouth; particularly on the side where the absess/soreness was. I did this several times a day. In a few days I was pain free. In between rinses I also used my finger to dab a bit on my gum, but it does burn some.
I recommended this remedy to other people and it worked for them too. Make sure the Oil of Oregano you purchase comes from the Mediterranean; the kind the cures isn't the same kind of oregano you buy for cooking."
05/30/2009: Veronica from London, UK replies: "Would you burst an abcess that looked like a bump - it's not draining!! I have two one under a Bridge - top left. big abcess - looks like a bump - now hurting....
the other one - has been draining for at least 2 years - no pain. When i burst it - it just comes back!!!! (dentist wants to take this out also).
Back to the fist tooth... tried garlic, goldemseal, teabag - bump still there..... unlike the other tooth - it is not draining....Was interested in what you said about pushing toothbrush on abcess until pus comes out - my question is would you do it on a 'bump type abcess?"

I remembered how the Apple Cider Vinegar had killed the bacteria from my feet so I decided to start taking it internally to kill bacteria from the inside out. It immediately started to reduce the pain in my tooth. Within 3 weeks, my toothache was completed gone. I still haven't gone to a dentist to get it fixed. I just keep taking my ACV!"

The absess was not really painful but my dentist advised a root canal because the tooth was dead. How I wish I would have tried the clay first and just had a temp crown put on. I continued to have a soreness at the root. The pocket of infection had been there for years. I didn't want to do the antibiotic thing or have more work done, so I tried the clay. I simply tucked a pea sized bit of clay with a bit of cotton up at the root where the pain was. The next morning it was somewhat better. I continued for months until every bit of the soreness was gone. It took time but I just know I probably could have healed it without the root canal. I still do it once in awhile because I know dead teeth in your mouth infect the body eventually, per Dr. Weston Price. The one advantage?...It takes almost no effort to do."

I remembered my mom telling me once about Blackstrap Molasses being full of nutrients (calcium and magnesium) in large amounts in general. So I thought I'd try it the next time my tooth ache occurred, and within half an hour, my tooth ache was completely gone. When my young daughters had growing pains, I decided to also try this on them: (1 tbsp) followed by any liquid (water ,milk, juice, just to wash it down). Her growing pain had stopped. As I had figured these tooth problems and shin aches may have been from a calcium/magnesium deficiency. The pain had left her in under half an hour. I believe from my own research that if the body does not get enough calcium it will leach it from other areas. thus the pain."

I've been taking cal-mag for almost 20 years with good results. When I don't take cal-mag for a week or so my tooth begins hurting and when I take the cal-mag regularly I have few tooth problems.
In the past few months I have had to take 10-12 large cal-mag soft gels to help my teeth. I think that I became resistant to the rock mineral and oyster shell based cal-mag. has caused me to have very loose stools.
A helpful clerk at a health food store showed me natural cal-mag made from seaweeds. So far it's fantastic. I only have to take 3 small tablets with perfect results. No tooth pain! No loose stools! Maybe it will work for you too."

It was extremely powerful and was very bitter. I left it in for about 20 seconds biting down on it and pulled it out. I swallowed the reminence of it and it was spicy and bitter. Well, after that, I waited about 5 seconds and it atarted to work. All the pain was gone. I recommend it to anyone with dry socket, although it is powerful, it will get the job done better thsn psin meds, which I also took along side of clove oil, like ibuprophen, and applied Tigers Balm to the outside of the face where more of the pain was, and it took away the swelling. You will have to do this a few times a day and clean your teeth before you do this."

It was a friday night when my tooth started to ache (go figure, and on labor day weekend so no dentist available for 3-4 days, always my luck). I spent labor day with an ice pack on my jaw and cheek all day. I used anbesol so many times i began to like the flavor. I had to figure something out because the next day I had to open my store and run my business and had to sleep. So I saw this about clove oil. I tried a couple drops of pure clove oil on a gauze pad and held it between my teeth. As soon as it became saturated, it was unbearable and I had to spit it out. At that point the pain went from 7 to 10 (on a scale of 1-10). When I finally got my jaw frozen again, I decided to try again. This time I mixed 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil and 2-3 drops of clove oil in a small dish and dunked a gauze pad in. It tasted much better that way. I held it between my teeth for as long as I could before the pressure was causing more pain than the tooth was. Needless to say, the pain went away completely for the next 4 hours. To be sure I didnt wake up in the middle of the night with massive pain again, I dunked another piece of gauze in and held it for about 10 minutes. The nextg morning I woke up with no pain. This morning I woke up to a throbbing in an upper molar, and drinking cold water set me over the edge! Grabbed a tiny bottle of pure Clove Oil. Applied two drops to outside of my cheek opposite my toothe, then one drop on gum area! I couldn't believe it...sure it's a tad bitter, but ten minutes later I am pain free...like magic!"

I put powdered cloves on my abscess for the pain. Pain is instantly gone. I will apply the garlic, oil, and tumeric later and let you know how that works!"

[YEA] 03/26/2007: sue from ottawa, canada writes: "Cloves are nothing short of a miracle. I'd been in severe pain with an abscess and not even the most potent painkillers, antibiotics or extra strength oragel were helping. I read about clove oil on the internet and went to the local health food store to find some. They didn't carry it and neither did the drug store, so I bought powdered cloves and emptied the contents of a teabag and put the clove powder in. Within 5 minutes I was PAIN FREE for hours. I actually got some sleep! This is an unbelievable remedy and I only wish it were taken more seriously. No one with a toothache needs to use anything but cloves!"
