Oil Pulling Instructions to Treat Sinus Infections

Alternative Therapy Instructions:

  • You'll Need: Sunflower or Sesame Oil - 1 Tablespoon

The Ayurvedic tradition of oil pulling can remove toxins from the body and clear up congestion as well. Before brushing your teeth and with an empty stomach, take one Tbsp of oil into your mouth and swish it around for 10-20 minutes until the oil has turned milky white. Spit this out. Most any food oil will do, but sesame and sunflower oils are traditional and the most popular.

[YEA]  Tricia : "I've had a cold that wasn't going away, and seemed to be getting worse, if anything. My congestion, and the amount of mucus that was coming out when I blow my nose has been alot. I started wondering if I might have a sinus infection, so I thought I'd try oil pulling. Did it once in the afternoon yesterday, and once in the evening, and suddenly realized that, for the first time in a week, I could breathe clearly. Have done it twice today, and have just experienced a strange thing: I blew my nose and the mucus came out bright yellow, like egg yolk. I have never seen anything like this, and was wondering if Ted or any readers could comment?"

My sinus infection, which I wasn't even aware was a sinus infection, had been untreated so long my lungs had filled was green mucous, which didn't even start blowing out of me for about a week and a half...needless to say, it took me a month and a half of vinegar drinking and oil pulling, but I am cured forever, and like everyone else on this site, am not going to stop oil pulling or drinking the vinegar mixture...God bless all of you, and this site. diann"

[YEA]  02/03/2007: SuSu from Sacramento, CA: "Olbas oil prevents sinus infections. I used to get sinus infections all the time due to perfumes in the office I work in but since using the inhalant, I haven't had one. It's made up of essential oils of peppermint, eucalyptus, cajeput, wintergreen, juniper and clove."

Olbas actually has an inhalant that you can get at any health food store that sells Olbas oil. It's very similar in style to the Vicks inhalant (it's a little tube with an opening that you put up one nostril and breathe deeply) - except Olbas has a different blend of oils (more natural). If you can't find it, you can also put a couple of drops of Olbas oil on a piece of tissue, cup it around your nose and breathe deeply (I do this sometimes when I fly to avoid congestion). Good luck! Olive Leaf

[YEA]  10/22/2007: Linda Redmond from Asheville, North Carolina: "The best and only cure that worked for my lifelong, formerly constant, miserable, life-controlling and debilitating sinus infections is inexpensive Olive Leaf. I make tea from it (boil about a shotglass-full or less of dried leaves in 2 cups water for 20 minutes - it makes one cup of tea). It is also available at health stores in powder, capsule, tincture and supercritical gel cap form. I find tea the most effective, but have had great results with any decent, reputable brand. Olive leaf is known as a wide-spectrum godsend for many, many illnesses and infections from mild to severe to dangerous. I have always found it easy to look up on the web. It is an ancient tried-and-true herb with a fascinating history, reported to give no side effects except a slight lowering of blood pressure and a non-stimulant mild increase in energy (probably due to its elimination of infectious forces in the body). Take it slow at first if you are highly and chronically infected, so you don't get a big healing crisis/die-off reaction. Dosages are available in books and websites, but you can take it every day (I usually do), and it is reported to be impossible to overdose on it -- I feel lightheaded if I take more than 4-6 cups in a day (a very large amount which I'd only use if severely ill) and I am a small individual. It seems to be a best-kept secret, so spread the word and many blessings!"

04/17/2009: Rob from NYC, New York replies: "Thanks Linda, I find it interesting that you say the tea works best for you. Makes me wonder if the simplest, most patient forms, are the best approaches to healing. The subtleties of preparation and ritual may be just as important as the herb. In this case the hot water infusion could make something available that pills don't. My first instinct is to run out and buy the pill form, but am learning the slower and much cheaper method of buying bulk herbs may have greater rewards..I am going to try your tea...thanks. Also thanks EC..The process of just reading others health successes can have a healing effect in itself."

Oregano

09/26/2011: Andreea from Grimsby, On, Canada: "Hi, This is something I would definitely try, but I'm not sure what Oregano Juice is. Is it the oil? Or is it actual juice?

Thank you, Andreea"

09/24/2011: Joyce from Dallas, Tx: "Hi everyone, I SWEAR BY THIS METHOD... Six years ago I came to Earth Clinic looking for a cure for my recurring Sinus infections that constantly left me with a feeling of phlegm being trapped at the back of my throat... I read a posting from someone and this was the remedy he posted on Earth Clinic... It has worked for me for the past 6 years and I do not have that phlegm or recurring sinuses anymore! Here is the remedy:

1. Go to Kroger, buy a nasal spray, empty nasal spray bottle and clean it out with water and soap.

2. Add a little water to nasal spray bottle

3. Add a little pinch of sea salt to water in bottle

4. Add a half capful of Oregano Juice

5. Stick nasal spray in nostril and inhale it, while you spray at the same time. Breathe in hard so that it reaches the Sinus or Nasal Cavity, where all the congestion is. (This is going to burn and your eyes will water, your nose will run instantly so get some tissue to wipe your nose and eyes! )

If it burns too much then it might be too strong. Try putting less Oregano Juice or add more water. You also don't want it to be too weak! The Burning is good, it works and it really burns the infection or bugs, whatever! I have used this for the past 6 years, I have told all my friends about it. I use it on my daughter whenever she comes down with a sinus infection... No more doctors office, no more antibiotics!

Also if it is a serious sinus infection that develops into a Bronchial or chest infection, then chopped up Garlic cloves in a glass of water will help clear up the Bronchial Phlegm or Garlic capsules, which will be less potent. But you will also need to take the oregano spray to take care of the Nasal congestion... In addition, if there is a suspected Ear infection or Drainage as well, you will need to put Hydrogen Peroxide drops in the ear and that will address the ears... All these things, to address the infected and congested Ears, Nose and Throat or Chest! If it gets that far..."

Everything else sounds good though! :0)"

01/15/2013: Dz from Bakersfield, Ca replies: "Peroxide for ear infection: In reference to the person who says you can't use peroxide in your ears, I have used on myself and children, dogs etc. for over 35 years and it indeed does stop ear infections. Shame on you for retelling such lies."

01/16/2013: Liza from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada replies: "I had heard of this (Dr. Oz show) and have since used it with success both for myself and my husband as he has always had issues with his ears since being a toddler. It absolutely DOES work. Give it a try. :)"

Oregano Oil Remedy for Sinus Infections

Herbal Remedy Ingredients:

  • Oregano Oil

Put a couple of drops of oregano oil beneath your tongue to relieve sinus pressure. You can also add a few drops to a steaming pot of water and drape a cloth over your head and neck to breathe in the vapors.

[YEA]  09/24/2011: Gtcharlie from Losangeles, Ca: "I found Oil of Oregano the most effective!

I had a sinal infection a while back. The prescribed antibiotic didn't work. After two days, I gave up and used the OOO instead. I took the kind that has 64 mg Carvacrol and Thynol, 3 capsules 3 times a day to start. Improvement was felt only two hours later, much less pressure the next day! 9 capsules a day until infection was under controlled (you can feel the action, definitely), followed by 2 by 3 for 3-4 more days (infection gone) and 2x2 for another week for maintanance. I was so convinced by this herb that I would take 2x2 whenever I feel anything funny; gum infection, viral infection in a cold, etc. The infection would usually go away within the same day. Of course, we are all different - the way that worked for me might not be the right thing for you. Pay attention to your body's reaction while taking it. I didn't have any side effect taking 9 capsules a day. I found it insufficient when I tried to get down a bit. I would, with no reservation, recommend this wonderful herb to anyone."

[YEA]  07/10/2011: Robin from Juneau, Alaska: "First, I love this site and especially Ted.. you are a gift to us all.

I have struggled with sinus infections most of my life, but never like I have since moving to Southeast Alaska where pollen and mold proliferates. Being a Type 2 Diabetic, I am prone to infections and don't always adhere to the sugar free diet as I should. Last year I spent more than 5 months with a chronic respiratory infection that was finally arrested with my 3rd round of antibiotics and supplemented with Oil of Oregano drops.

I have been infection free until about a month ago. It flared up again and has caused me severe pain, fever and chills until I saw the dr last week and was placed on another round of doxycycline (I am allergic to most antibiotics.. This is one I can still take). Well, after a week, it should be gone, but it isn't. In fact, the fever and chills are returning. Today I returned to your website to review the options again (I used the neti pot but it's not working on this one). I read about the oil of oregano and went in to get my bottle out of my first aid kit. Rather than use drops under the tongue, I went straight for a Qtip saturated with the oil and swabbed both sides of my nasal cavities as far up as I could comfortably get the Qtip. Within seconds my nose began to burn from the oil, but relief was almost immediate. I sat down with a cup of hot tea and suddenly felt the stuff break loose in my cavities and start down my throat. The heat of the oil set me on fire, literally. My eyes teared up and I felt like I had sniffed a handful of horseradish up my nose.

I have absolutely NO SINUS PAIN. It's as if I imagined the problem. I plan to take this direct approach (and hope there are no side effects from oregano oil directly applied to the sinus area). The result is amazing."

[YEA]  01/18/2010: Elizabeth from Kankakee, Il: "I had been sick with sinus infections and lower respiratory problems for 2 and a half months - I went through 2 rounds of antibiotics that failed - I finally put a few drops of oregano oil in a pan of water I had just boiled and threw a towel over my head. I breathed in the steam (with my eyes closed!) for about 10 minutes. The next day,I can't say I felt better, but "different". Every day after that I felt better and better, and after the 4th day I was no longer sick - at all. I mentioned this to a friend of mine who was sick and she got the same results I did - I will do this everytime I feel like I may be getting as cold or flu - it was amazing for me - and free, since I already had the oil in my medicine cabinet!"

[YEA]  02/22/2010: Dana from Toronto, Ontario, Canada replies: "I recently was having a terrible time with post-nasal drip, which, when I woke up in the morning, started feeling as if infection was setting in. Not a fan of antibiotics, I tried oil of oregano as I've used it to treat colds in the past. It really does taste quite awful which is why you have to administer it in drops under the tongue. But I felt immediate results and am now on my second day with it. I no longer feel as if an infection is setting in and there's a noticeable difference in the amount of goop in my throat - and my voice even sounds better. Highly recommended!"
[YEA]  08/14/2012: Lavon from Lakewood, Ohio Usa replies: "Miracle, wonderful remedy. I tried this last night and I slept like a baby. You are right it was as if I had never had a sinus problem. I gathered some fresh oregano from my neighbor's garden and heated it in some olive oil. I put the oil on a q-tip and swabbed my nostril membranes. Then I held the leaves under my tongue, until dry. I feel wonderful! God is good and his herbs are fabulous! Thank you!"

[WARNING!]  04/10/2008: Randahl from San Jose, California: "For those looking to use Oil of Oregano for it's antimicrobial properties, I would like to specify that Oil of Oregano is NOT Oregano Essential oil, which would have to be diluted. If you're looking to buy this remedy, make sure that the ingredients list states that there is a carrier oil (like olive oil). Otherwise, be prepared to dilute it yourself, or there could be serious negative effects.

I have seen some people writing in remedies that include putting undiluted essential oils on their skin. I think I saw a remedy for headaches or migraines that recommended putting peppermint essential oil on the temples. I have been studying aromatherapy for 5 years, and one of the most basic lessons is that you almost NEVER use essential oils undiluted. Peppermint essential oil in particular is considered to be a skin irritant to all skin types when used undiluted. If put on the temples, the strength of the fumes could seriously irritate the eyes and the delicate area around the eye. If you are going to try any remedy including essential oils, DILUTE FIRST! Even if the remedy doesn't specify it, you'll be saving yourself from possible complications."

[NAY]  03/30/2008: Riya from Bangalore, India: "I read about the remedy oil of oregano and purchased it from an online seller last year. This is really powerful stuff and I've been using it for my son's recurring viral infections with dramatic results. However, the oil actually made my sinus infection much worse. I thought the severity of my symptoms warranted around 8 drops a day under my tongue every 3-4 hours and continued the dose for 4 days. Every day I experienced a worsening of symptoms including asthma and stuffed nose with thick greenish-yellow discharge of mucous. I believe the oregano was responsible for it firstly, because the symptoms eased off when I stopped it and second, I read somewhere that yeast infections are typically exacerbated with good bacteria die-offs which is probably what the oregano was doing in those big doses. I wasn't eating enough yoghurt to compensate either. Just a note to everyone out there to be careful with overdoing the oregano oil. I'm doing far better with 2 cloves of garlic 5-6 times a day, lots of water, the homeopathic remedy arsenicum album 30X every 2-3 hours, and drastic reduction of refined carbs in my diet."

[YEA]  03/15/2008: Aaron from Chicago, IL: "God and Oil of Oregano cured my sinus infection! Like many, one sinus infection after the other over the years. Tried, antibiotics, netti pot, homeopathics, echinacea, golden seal, tumeric, vitamin c, apple cider vinegar, acidophulus, gave up cheese and milk and other dairy items, gave up sugars. None of these did the job. Two weeks ago a cold turned into a sinus infection, with thick green and brown phlegm. On Saturday, the cold turned feverish. By 5:00 p.m, felt terrible, with a fever of 100. Online to do research. My wife, meanwhile, mentioned oil of oregano. I checked it out and discovered the Georgetown study, where it cured some drug resistant staph infections. Oil of oregano is believed to have both anti-bacterial and ant-viral properties. My wife had some in the cupboard. Decided to try it. Two drops under the tongue. Tasted terrible. Burned. Went to bed. Woke up at 6:00 p.m, an hour later, still felt terrible, but temperature had dropped to 99.1. Then, 30 minutes later, took temperature again, it was 98.6. Never in my life have I seen such immediate effects from anything. (But let's give God the credit, shall we? After all, it's God who makes the natural remedies in the first place. And it's God who directs us to the right cure at the right time. Let's always put God first and we'll always be the better for it.) Over the next 5 days, I increased the dosage to four drops under the tongue every 2-3 hours. Over those five days, the phlegm slowly changed from green and brown to clear. Sinus infection now gone completely. I would not have credited Oil of Oregano with the healing had it not been for seeing the immediate decrease in my temperature at those times. Nor would I have stuck with it when I did not see the same immediate results with the nasal secretions. But it handled it. I've continued a maintenance dose everyday since, of about five drops once a day. I recommend buying a bottle, but make sure it's wild oregano, and using it at the first sign of a cold or flu. One amazing remedy from Upstairs!"

[YEA]  11/12/2007: Renee from Los Angeles, CA: "I came down with a most horrible sinus infection after getting a really bad head cold. I was desperate! I even went to a conventional pharmacy to ask for help- which of course, they couldn't do. So, I went to the health food store in my neighborhood and the lady there recommended wild oil of oregano. WOW! Is this stuff powerful! It is day 2 and the pain is completely gone and I can breathe freely. It is really hot (I take it sub-lingually) even though it is in an olive oil base. I have spent more money than I care to mention trying to find something that really worked- and this really does. I also irrigate my sinuses with a colloidal silver spray. The combination of these two things is the best I've found so far."
