WARNING!

[YEA]  12/20/2006: Emily from Chandler, AZ writes: "organic oregano oil ( capsules size 00 ) 4 drops in capsule every 2 hours the first day and every 4 hours and then every 6 and then every 8 for a period of 10 days cures sinus infections. I have a friend that uses essential oils. I didn't have insurance at the time so i called her at my wits end. I normally am prescribed Zithromax and Prednisode ( a steroid) that's how severe my sinus infections normally are. You take it for 10 days and it fights off the infection. Also peppermint oil rubbed around your sinus area ( use a 1 to 1 ratio with cold pressed extra virgin olive oil) it gets your nose running right away. You do have to take it for 10 days or it can come back. Using this in combination to the other remedies on here will take care of the bacterial and viral sinus infections. (i get both!) Hope it helps. I've been doing this for the last 2 times i got a sinus infection."

PROBIOTIC DRINK

11/22/2010: Mickey from Canberra, Act Australia writes: "I have just had my first sinus infection. Painful and the smell was like a dead kangaroo rotting in the sun. I went to a stupid doctor and asked for something to help but asked him to ensure it was something that would not cause anxiety as antibiotics (and all pharmaceuticals) very often can. He prescribed something that could cause palpitations, nervousness and depression (and you know how pharmaceutical companies disguise the worst of it). No thanks.

Out of desperation I drank Yakult (a probiotic drink in tiny little bottles). When I gargled it and put some in my nose, there was an exponential improvement almost immediately. The bacteria obviously eat the infection. You have to be very careful with your nose obviously but I just gently let a bit drip into my nose from my hand. No fair dinkum it's awesome. Tomorrow I'm going to try the apple cider vinegar as well and hopefully that will help to completely knock it on the head. Gosh isn't sinus infection horrible!!!"

If youve taken 1 or more rounds of antibiotics and they don't cure the sinus infection it usually means that the infection is fungal, not bacterial. When you take antibiotics they kill all the benificial baceria in your stomach and intestines which the Probiotics replenish. I started taking Probiotics and started feeling better the first day."

[NAY]  02/22/2010: Dana from Toronto, Ontario, Canada replies: "Would have to give this one a big "Nay". I heard and read so much about probiotics that I decided to try them - in both pill form, and in yogurt, on two separate occasions. With the pill, I felt sick but wasn't sure it was a direct result of taking it. Flash forward a few years, and I ate probiotics in yogurt. However, doing so seems to have changed my physiology - and not for the better, which I find quite worriesome. For example, where I used to have only a slight lactose intolerance, I can barely eat dairy products now, yogurt especially, without getting stabbing stomach cramps and excessive bloating. Please check with your doctor before taking a probiotic. They really are NOT for everyone - trust me on this one."

[YEA]  08/14/2011: Lilianne from Corona, California writes: "Just had to let people know about this supplement. I've had a chronic sinus infection for 3 weeks now. First I went to the doctor and got the usual antibiotics and was told to take zyrtec-d. After 10 days I felt no relief. My head, cheeks and jaw were pounding from the pressure. I started doing sinus rinses, acv, and purchased nature's rite sinus relief. After 5 days, I felt some relief but I still had pressure and lots of mucous coming out. I bought quercetin-bromelain from the vitamin shoppe for $25 because the worker said it worked really well so I figured why not? Omg, within the first half hour, I started breathing through my nose, my sense of smell was coming back, no mucous was coming out and absolutely no pressure. I was in heaven. Gonna take this on a daily basis. Did some research and it looks like this stuff is good for a whole bunch of other stuff. I can finally sleep at night!!"

[YEA]  03/22/2007: Dolly from Melbourne, Vic, AU writes: "I went to the doctors re severe sinusitis becoming a bronchitis infection 3 weeks ago and got a cocktail of antibiotics. Recently got results of blood tests which showed I had a virus which of course antibiotics don't treat, doctor had nothing to give me for it. Don't know if it was the virus symptoms plus after effects of penicillin antibiotics. Last night my gland engorgement and bloating in stomach and pain in upper abdomen, swelling in neck and kidney with pain, had got severe I looked like I was in advanced pregnancy! There was another episode where my face and neck swelled in the night. Out of frustration and desperation to find a cure found this web site, (and because I didn't have any ACV, drank some red wine vinegar in water, and periodically cleaned my sinus's with FESS sinu-cleanse can, (contains salt). This morning everything is nearly back to normal. Is it possible that the properties in ACV are the same in all vinegars? My stomach bloating has gone down, sinusitis relieved, kidney pain usually intense in morning down) throat glands are no longer strangling me."

[YEA]  02/16/2009: Logan from Montreal, Quebec, Canada writes: "I always make tea with a japanese/chinese mushroom called reishi (ling zhi in chinese - it is the best for boosting the immune system) and I had been chewing on a few cloves of garlic (this really helped, but only temporarily) but this wasn't cutting it alone for this sinus infection I had. So after checking this site, I decided to do a combo of many of the ideas. I added cayenne pepper to the tea. I also got some wild oregano oil which I both consumed and I inhaled the steam. Basically for 2 days I constantly chewed raw garlic, inhaled steam from the tea, drank the tea, repeat. This is the third day and I now feel almost back to normal... I feel no pressure and no blockage in my nose or allergy irritations, just a very slight drip. My sinus infection had started 3 weeks ago, and before this weekend it was actually getting much much worse."

REMEDIES NEEDED

12/05/2011: Rendy from Lubbock, Tx, Usa writes: "I started to use Hydrogen Peroxide inhalation about the end of January to the middle of Feb. I worked instantly. However, the start of my use coincided with the end of ginning season in west Texas. We get bad dust storms. I worked outside all day long in the peak of the spring wind/dust storm season this year and I never had a problem. Early just this past November, I stayed home from work with a gout flare up. The ACV really helped that day, but getting out that day in the little bit of dust that had kicked up, my sinus' and chest immediately got infected. I kept up the ACV to no avail. I relented and called my doctor for antibiotics. I felt better immediately. Then, about 8 days ago, another dust storm; on my second course of antibotics. Does anybody have any suggestions? I hate the antibiotics, but this west Texas dust really hits me like a ton bricks!"

I have had two surgeries and I have tried almost every natural thing on the list. I sleep with a humidifier, diet changes, zinc, Apple Cider Vinegar you name it I have probably done it. The saline rinses seem to make my sinus congestion worse as all the water doesn't come out. I had one ENT doc tell me to use the rinses and the other to not. I do not take any drugs.

I could smell for a week after my surgery great. Now it is off and on and I dont know what triggers it. In feburary of this year I randomly was able to smell for an entire week. And if I blow my nose sometimes I can smell as well. I get frequent chiropractic adjustments like every other week. Any suggestions?

With my sinuses it seems when I get sinus infections I almost get dizzy but not a feeling of unsteadyness. I'm 25 and in great shape. I was sinus free and could smell 3 years ago.

This is ruining my life!"

(1) For sinus you can try a single garlic clove on every morning with a glass of water, swallow it like a pill. It will improve nasal congestion and clear your throat as well. Include garlic in your daily diet. It worked for me. Try it. All the best.

(2) You may also try Indian Goosberry (Embilica Officianalis). Crush it, boil it with water, when half glass of water will be remained, drink it empty stomach in the morning, do not eat anything before it and you may eat anything else after 30 mins of drinking it. It is rich in vitamin c, since useful for smelling I. E nasal congestion or sinus. Try it. Which ever is more convinient.

Warning(s) : If you found anything unsuitable on consuming this, please stop the practice and consult physician.

Thanks

You can get one at the pharmacy. It looks like a little teapot and comes with a few packets of sinus wash powder. You just pour it through one nostril and allow it to come out the other nostril. It takes a little practice. You will be blowing your nose a lot for a few minutes. Feels much better when you're done."

For the nasal spray, put One ounce of distilled water and 1/2 ounce of Glyco-Thymoline. Glyco-Thymoline is a great product! Search online for the cheapest place to get it."

I suffered for months before I read about doing this. The wand can be bought where you would buy any massager at a drug or discount store. I can go a few days without doing it but I have to reapply the therapy again if it starts to bother me."
01/10/2012: Jen from Bozeman, Mt, Us replies: "If it is in fact TMJ then you may need to see a Biological Dentist who can help you find out why your muscles are tense in the first place. It is possible that you actually do have sinusitis though so don't rule out the sinus issue. You can have no cold, stuffy nose, etc.... And still have sinus problems. Be careful though I had the same issue a while back when I was a dental assistant and since both my doctor and my dentist (who was my boss) couldn't figure out what it was, I was put on IV antibiotics for a week and had a rootcanal done on a tooth that was perfectly fine. I believe it was actually a sinus issue that was affecting my teeth to the point of swelling my entire face. The antibiotics helped temporarily but I still have sinus issues to this day. I am planning on trying the cayanne pepper cure (when I get the courage)that a few people have painfully tried as I am getting desparate. Good luck.

P.S. I am also currently seeing a biological Dentist as I have TMJ. She is helping me to get rid of the amalgam fillings which will also help my sinuses (I hope) and she is helping me figure out why I am clenching my teeth all day/night long. It is usually a problem with the anatomy of your bite. Hi spots, missing teeth, etc that cause you to constantly be searching for a comfortable place to rest your jaw. Some people on EC have bought a sports mouth guard with great success. I am too light of a sleeper for that and I have problems during the day as well as night so I can't necessarily wear a mouth guard while I am at work:) But it may work for you."

01/10/2012: Debbie from Melbourne, Australia replies: "Have you considered a magnesium deficiency as the reason for the clenching of the jaw? The magnesium will relax the muscles and even stop any tooth grinding as well. Maybe an epsom salt bath before bed would help determine if magnesium is the problem. Most people are deficient in magnesium. I am also an ex dental nurse from many, many years back and usually the dentist would treat this with a mouth guard and grinding down teeth. I would look into magnesium though."
01/11/2012: Madeline from Central, New Jersey replies: "Exercise particularly upper back and shoulders. I was having the same problem and once I joined a gym I started to feel better. Also fix your posture because it's causing your neck to protrude which places a lot of pressure on your neck and shoulders. Mckenzie neck retractions exercise. Good luck"

[YEA]  01/26/2009: Avi from London, United Kingdom writes: "Thanks so much for the info on Borax, its doing an amazing job on my chronic candida infection. Sinus infection has been a big, BIG, painful problem, causing the kind of headache that occupies everything from the neck up. I recently learned that sniffing up 3% H2O2 can shift that, but I find it really painful and so I tried the advice of a local herb gardener who said to sniff up rhubarb juice, and it worked magnificently.
Stings a little bit, but clears out a lot within minutes and keeps working all day, so you might be slightly sniffy, but great relief, and doing it once every day keeps the sinuses clear, although I don't think its a cure, just a great way of expelling toxins. Mixing 50/50 RAW rhubarb juice and colloidal silver [in distilled water] removes the sting but isn't quite as effective as just rhubarb juice. Anyway, variations on that theme give me immediate relief from sinus headaches. This is useful to me when I detox too fast, maybe it can be useful to others."

[YEA]  10/10/2011: Lezlie W from Los Angeles, Ca writes: "The best cure for sinus infection is a nasal saline rinse. I would get sinus infections that made me super sick for two weeks. At one point they kept reappearing every 3 months. I finally got fed up and went on-line for a remedy. I found a reference to this and decided to try it. It worked pretty effectively and quickly. I used The neilmed brand aftvies scoping out all the options on the drug store shelves. I chose it because it seemed simple compared with the other methods. When I used it, it stopped my cold flu symptoms from putting me in that I need to stay in bed and rest all day state. Then I noticed my running nose and stuffy head went away too. I was still able to function daily as the symptoms declined with the use of the saline nasal rinses. Big difference from the way the infections knocked me out ANC made me feel. I'd say after three days of the washes you feel a big difference and after a week of the washes there's no signs of the infection. Since using this twice, once in the midst of a full blown infection and once at the onset, I haven't had a sinus infection since. It's been a year and a half."

[YEA]  05/28/2010: Kristin K from Santa Barbara, Ca, Usa writes: "The CURE for SINUS INFECTIONS: Saline Irrigation with Sea Salt and Warm Water applied directly into sinus cavity.

My story: I had bacterial sinus infections on and off for 4 years and this last winter is the first year I did not have bacterial sinus infections. I saw 3 ENT specialists and have tried everything from antiobiotics through saline irrigation (netti pot) using Hydrogen Peroxide or Apple Cider Vinegar. The last year I have been finally free of sinus infections by using Sea Salt and warm water only in my irrigation. What I found it its the technique of HOW you use the irrigation; not WHAT you put in the solution. For me the trick was using an irrigation system that got the warm salt water all the way up into my sinuses. I was using the netti pot while kneeling on the batrhoom floor and holding my head upside down to get the water up into my sinuses. Now I use a water squirting devise (a brand name) that is sold to spray a stream of water to clean teeth. A friend told me about using a water spraying teeth cleaning machine for sinus irrigation years ago and I finally tried it February of 2010 with excellent results. The technique of daily squirting the warm water directly into my sinuses has what kept me from chronic bacterial sinus infections that I had in the past. I had tried Hydrogen Peroxide, Vinegar, Baking Soda etc all with stringing and irritation. The electric water spraying device has worked the best hands down.

I am writing this because this site helped me so much in trying different ways to treat my bacterial sinus infections. I was very depressed and frustrated because the ENT specialists I saw only wanted to do surgery on me. One told me specifically that I could not clean out the bacteria with sinus irrigation when I asked him about it. I believe that I can clean out bacteria and what the ENT said is not true. The sad thing is that MDs do not make any money off of telling people to do sinus irrigation at home. I just wish I had started doing sinus irrigation years ago!

Good luck, keep at it and listen to your body."

11/12/2010: Laura from Ashland, Wi replies: "A coworker friend of mine told me about this almost 10 years ago and I haven't been on antibiotics for a sinus infection since. She called it a "Chinese remedy" and instructed to use a nasal aspirator like used on babies. You fill the aspirator with salt water and, tipping your head sideways over a bathtub, push the water up your nose. It feels like you jumped off a diving board and forgot to plug you nose. You just gently blow it back out again, and what comes out with the water is what causes your infection. My friend told the first time there were scabs and dirt etc.

My dad was against homeopathic for years; until when, he complained about an especially bad infection to me, I insisted he try it. Now, he tells me about like he's instructing me and that he's eternally grateful to me and it's the only thing that has been able to dent his infections that have lasted weeks. I'm still wondering about using this for an ear infection with blocked Eustachian tubes, which I have right now. I tried it in the bath and it took about 1/3 of the pressure away. I'm not sure it was the best for that."

12/12/2010: Linda M from Mckinney, Tx replies: "Laura, can you tell me what ratio of salt to water you used? Also, did you boil the water first? When I was growing up, my mother always used a saline solution as "nose drops" on us to clear out congestion. I just can't remember the proportions. Thanks."
04/12/2011: Wyked1 from Newark, Ohio, Usa replies: "I am not familiar with the nasal irrigation but after irrigating my ears several times, my ear Dr. (who must be 80 and has been my ear Dr. Since I was 5) recommended the over the counter oral irrigation but in lieu of that said I could use the bulb syringe. It works well but you have to use good force and have the water as warm as possible without burning yourself.

If you have never had your ears irrigated it feels amazing when it is finished however, it will make you dizzy so if you are doing it yourself, have someone nearby.

Since I have sinus trouble also I am thinking I should invest in the oral system so I can irrigate both."

01/23/2012: Annie Joan from Portage, Wi replies: "First, it is REALLY important to only use "pickling salt" because it has no preservatives or anything that could further irritate your nasal passages. I use the Niel Med squirt bottle. I use 1 teaspoon of pickling salt every time I do my sinus rinse and fill it with warm water- a little above room temperature. The salt will burn at first, but it is SO worth actually being able to breath again. I unknowingly lived in an apartment with mold for 3 years. Now I have esosinophilic pnemonia, rhinosinusitis, have had 3 surgeries (because of breathing/nasal problems) Use to be in the ER at least once a week. I used over 200 tissues a day because I couldn't blow my nose because it was swollen completely shut into the back of my throat. And since it was so swollen and irritated, it ran literally all day. I couldn't sleep because I had such severe apnea.

Finally I met my "lung man" and he perscribed Azelastine HCR and Fluticasone Propionate (nasal sprays, apparently the best known combination). Since I couldn't spray anything up my nose, I was put on a high dose of Prednisone to reduce swelling so I could use the nasal sprays. After I started using them, although I still get chronic sinus infections, I can actually breathe through my nose (usually).

So anyone with issues like mine, I STRONGLY suggest forgetting about ENT doctors and going to a polmunologist (lung doctor) that specializes in allergies. There is a reason you have problems like this. It isn't normal to go through these things."

I work with toddlers and I thought that it would take me forever to feel 100% again, which is very important when working with young, energetic ones! Dreading the money it would cost to visit a Dr. (as I do not have health care) I decided to try something natural first. Thank goodness for this website! I mixed just a little over 1/4 teaspoon of salt, a pinch of baking soda and a tiny cap-full of hydrogen peroxide in 1 cup of warm water. I used a baby ear/nose bulb and rinsed like there was no tomorrow. A whole mess of green/yellow mucus came right out of my nose and continued to after the treatment every time I blew my nose. Immediately after the all of the gunk came out I could breathe again, pressure was gone and I was happy! I am very grateful for this amazing website!"

I couldn't eat because my teeth hurt so bad, I couldn't even touch my left cheek bone without a lot of pain. I am a single mom with 3 kids all under the age of 7, I couldn't miss work and I don't have the money to go to the doctor. I tried apple cider vinegar it helped a little but I needed relief NOW!! I tried this rinse and it was AMAZING!!!! Everything cleared and now 2 days later I feel great! One thing I did that helped a lot was I slowly inhaled through my nose, so the solution would get all the way into my sinuses, below my eye, where it hurt the worst."

I do not like to take medication and looked at many natural supplements and herbs to take. I discovered the Sinus Rinse last spring and tried it. I have not taken any medications since. At first I used it twice per day for a few days and it cleared my sinuses and my allergies. I will not do without this again."

I have been dealing with a sinus infection for over a week now and found the saline rinse suggestion this evening on earthclinic and could not wait to give it a try. After mixing the solution I realized that I was having a very difficult time getting the rinse into my sinuses, during the process however I had an epiphany of how it reminded me of scuba diving. In scuba diving when water gets into your mask you tilt your head back and blow out out your nose to fill the mask with air and push water out the bottom, inevitably rookie divers often pour water up their nose at the beginning of the process, myself being no exception. I got out my scuba mask, poured some saline rinse into it, pressed it to my face and simply tilted my head back and sure enough it worked like a charm. As long as the mask seals well there is little mess and it is a very controlled way to pour the rinse into your sinuses. I felt relief within minutes, the rinse really does work. I plan to buy a spray bottle, but have doubts about its ability to really flood the sinuses, when at home I think I'll keep using my scuba mask."

The Alkolol is especially great if you have irritation in your nose. I use a baby bulb syringe and use 1/2 of the mix in each side 1-2 times per day. Super easy if you do it in the shower too!"
