[YEA]  05/21/2010: Elizabeth from Springfield, Pa, Usa writes: "After reading your website,I have tried the Grapefruit Seed Extract (5 drops) in my neti pot along with the normal saline. I was on my 3rd round of antibiotics (I'm allergic to many)for sinus infection. I've had headaches for 2-3 months...every day. The crown of my head, base of my skull, but the worst was when I bent over. I thought my forehead would burst.

After the 1st round of the neti/GSE my nose ran for hours and I just kept sneezing. After about 3 hours, I noticed the left side was opened up. It took awhile longer for the right side, and, I'm still waiting for my right ear to pop. I just finished my 3rd neti(which I've always done daily, so, I know it was the GSE that helped) and I can't believe the difference in 24 hrs. This AM was the first morning in MONTHS that I woke up with no headache. I didn't even have to take 1 aspirin! Everything from my nose was clear...just huge amounts. I can't thank everyone enough."

05/30/2010: Elizabeth from Springfield, Pa replies: "I had the same reaction, however, after approximately 5-6 hours, I noticed the release of pressure. Perhaps you put too many drops in (I know I did...didn't have glasses on) and that's why the sudden headache etc. I've continued once a day with 4 drops plus saline in the neti pot. Blow my nose and all is well! I hope this helps."

Eye Dropper full with head back, then tilt head forward, between legs. Adding a couple shakes of Sea Salt takes away the intense pain of water introduced to the sinus cavity by 98%."

04/27/2010: Ana from New York, New York replies: "Hi,

I've had a sinus infection (so I think),as I only feel pressure but no mucus, and I've been to 2 doctors a this point and both have been prescribing antibiotics for sinus infection.

Anyway, figured I'd try the grapefruit seed extract to try to relieve some pressure to get some relief. I mixed 4 drops in 8oz of water with 1/2 tsp of salt and put into neti pot. As soon as the mixture hit my nasal passages, I felt a strong burning /stinging feeling and immediate pain in my face & head, as if the pressure was getting worse. I tried a couple more times and felt the same thing, so I stopped and wanted to get feedback first before I continue. Is this normal, the burning/sting? Does it feel worse better it gets better (regarding the pressure)? Thanks."

04/02/2011: Jane from Andover, Ma replies: "You are supposed to use 1/4 tsp fine salt in a Neti Pot... Not 1/2 tsp. Maybe that us why you felt burning? Salt in a wound? Try less salt, and body temp warm water. I hope it's better."

On sign of a sinus infection, I did a 2 cup nasal cleanse (with the nasal syringe) using 2 cups of water, 1/2 tsp salt and 8 drops grapefruit seed extract. I experienced an immediate 'stuffing up' but by morning was symptom free. I repeated cleanse before I went to work and have had no problems since! Worked great!"

It has the correct proportions, and does not sting. It worked for my sinus infection, and I have since bought a bottle for each of my grown children. I could only find it at health food stores out-of-town, so I recommend calling first, because 1 out of 5 stores might have it. Just ask if they have nasal spray with GSE, and stress that you don't mean GRAPE, but GRAPEFRUIT."

[YEA]  11/15/2008: Jamila from Washington, DC writes: "I woke up with a sinus infection on Thursday and suffered through the day on Dayquil. Friday morning, I drank 2 tbs of ACV in 8 oz of water. That helped a little bit. I found this website and read posts about GSE, oil pulling and the neti pot. I went to Whole Foods for the neti pot and GSE. Friday afternoon and evening, the neti pot helped ease sinus pressure and prompted drainage. This morning Saturday, I woke up and did oil pulling. Then, I added 4 drops of GSE to the neti pot (8 oz water with 1/4 tsp salt). I used this combo-one for each nostril.
Right now, I feel great. My sinus pressure is gone and my congestion is rapidly draining as I type this post. I am pretty sure combining the GSE with the neti pot treatment did the trick and I will continue this for at least five days to cure my sinus infection. Good luck and be peaceful!"

[YEA]  03/09/2011: Stacey from Reading, Pa replies: "Amazing! I regularly suffer from sinus infections and had been using apple cider vinegar in warm water to treat it. This time it was just not doing the trick. I tried 4 drops of grapefruit seed extract in my neti pot this evening, and just 3 hours later I am feeling the release of pressure and drainage. I have my fingers crossed for the futher improvement over the next few days with continued treatment - but already I am impressed!"
03/10/2011: Jamie from Lake Worth, Fl replies: "I also had a great experience with grapefruit seed extract. At work a girl came in sick (thanks pal) sore throat, very bad, and flu type ailments. Sure enough we all got it, my throat was not just sore, it felt like it was swollen. Maybe glands, my ears hurt down into my neck. After 2 days of getting worse, I started grapefruit seed extract. 10 drops 4 times a day, after the first day I felt a little better. I put it in warm water and drank it. This was very soothing to the throat. After two full days I was almost all better, I did continue four days, six days total

My coworkers who just let it pass naturally were sick for two weeks, some longer. I really think this stuff helped me, next time I will use it at the onset of an illness."

[YEA]  11/20/2007: MEG from Augusta, Georgia writes: "I just wanted to share my story as well. I became ill when my son contracted viral meningitis on a trip. Traveling back in the car, I could only take lots of EmergenC. For the next few days, I took the EmergenC with GAIA Echinacea three times a day and got lots of rest. It seemed to work after four days, so I stopped the treatments. Well I think I got a secondary infection because my lymph nodes became swollen and my sinuses became infected. I irrigated my nose with grapefruit seed extract (diluted) but some undiluted liquid got in my right sinus and caused a lot of pain. Discouraged and about to go to the doctor for antibiotics, I come across your wonderful website. I first started back on the C & Echinacea but added the Grapefruit seed extract (5 drops in 12 oz water). My sinuses were cured in one day! That same day I drank 12 oz of water with 3 tbsp. of ACV. The next day the affected area was in my throat. I made warm ACV with lemon (3 tbsp) and honey (2tbsp) and drank as much as I could. The day after that I felt I only had laryngitis. So I found Ted's wonderful receipe for Green Tea with baking soda (1/4 tsp). I have done this for two mornings and feel almost back to normal. Thanks to all your contributors, I am cured in a matter of a few days! You guys are awesome, especially Ted."

I have craved Ice cream every day for the past 3 1/2 months. I always use Oragnic ACV so I knew that was not helping. I tried grapefruit seed extract in water and was very pleased with the results. No more sinus headaches since I've been on it. I used about 5 drops in an 8oz glass of water."

I have been battling sinus infections since September have been on about 5 courses of antibotics. I am on antibotics right now because when I went to the ENT docter he said I have a sinus infection. What I find strange is I never get a runny nose I just get a lot of pain in my teeth pressure on the side of my nose and headache and I feel allergic to everything. Anyway was wondering I notice I started getting the sinus infections when I started taking these diets products that are soy based. Do you think there is a connection ? I feel that the grape fruit seed extract and acv are working the only thing that I notice is about 2 hours after I take the grape fruit seed extract I feel alot of chest congestion then I get this dry cought for a bit. I think its the grape fruit seed extract working. I am looking into the candida possibilities."

[YEA]  06/16/2009: Katie from Camano Island, WA writes: "I have had two severe sinus infection flare ups over the last two months. The post nasal drip from this infection has caused me to have SEVERE laringitis, so severe that i could not talk at all. As if my vocal cords were completely gone. I could only use sign language and even whispering hurt my throat and head. Has anyone ever had this problem? I have looked everywhere on the internet and have not found one story of laringitis caused by a sinus infection. I am using 13 drops of GSE and 1/8 tsp. of sea salt mixed in 3/4 cup warm water. i use a full eye dropper, tilt my head back and squirt it up both nostrils. Then i quickly plug my nose and put my head down between my legs. I plug one nostril and gently breath in through the other. Doing the same with the other nostril and back and forth for about 1 minute. When i first started doing this, the pressure in my sinus was almost unbearable. But now on my 5th day of doing this about 3-5 times a day, the pressure is gone. I still have laringitis but it is not lasting as long as my first bout with this infection. I am also starting the ACV drink. If anyone has had this Laringitis trouble, please let me know. I was completely mute for 3 days!!!"

I am teaching tomorrow, and I need my voice back. "
11/29/2009: Karen from Denver, Co replies: "Yes...laryngitis is common. Look into if you have a vocal cord dysfunction. The sinus drainage can irritate your cords and cause them to not open/close appropriately. It can give feelings of shortness of breath. There are some simple things that can be done to prevent it. A trained speech therapist can help."

[YEA]  Judy from Hawkesbury, Canada writes: "using sinus or allergy medication - makes it worse in the long run. Pain diary sounds like I could have written it. Add guaifenesin to the must-use. It's the active ingredient in Robitussin. No dextromethorphan or other fancies - just the plain stuff. Or get capsules. It tastes awful. I noticed pseudoephidrine in the diary. I use it when I can't handle the pain when I have a head cold. I also use Claritin (allergy medication) which also dries things up. It has consequences that don't seem to be listed any where that make things worse for people like us. Your face fills up with dried up mucous - layer after layer. And it won't come out. This impacts the trigeminal nerve. I couldn't even touch my cheek just beside my nose for YEARS - and my tooth ached constantly - but it is already a root canal. And the pressure on the nerve precipitates the attacks and makes migraines worse. So do swollen glands. Clean out the dried up mucous with guaifenesin (active ingredient in Robitussin). Might take awhile, but it's worth it. Also steam and massage. You'll never believe how much gunk is tucked away in your face! Makes you really sick because all the stuff that you dried up is loose again and floating around, but it's coming out - fast and easy."

H202, GSE, SEA SALT RINSE

[YEA]  02/13/2010: Llball from Belmont, Ma writes: "Remedy for Sinus Infection - WOW, FAST!

After reading through several pages of posts about remedies for sinus infection (which I have had for at least 10 days now...sinus/face pain, headaches, fatigue, achiness, etc) I decided to combine a few suggestions into a solution that was miraculous for me. I made the following mixture for my netti pot (which is actually a ceramic child's tea pot from my daughter's old tea set, sterilized of course :):

10oz of water
1 T. regular 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
5 drops grapefruit seed extract liquid concentrate
little less than 1/2 tspn. sea salt

I tried to run the solution through my nose, but it was too blocked, so I just poured some up in my nostril and then put my head down between knees to hold it in and let gravity work it up into my sinuses. Let is remain in there about 30 seconds or so...very slight burning/tingling. Then put my head over the sink and blew my nose, then repeated on the other side. Did this a couple of times each side, each time releasing a little more mucous. Then I waited a few hours. Within 2 hours, the right nostril ejected a large ball of mucous tinged with a little blood and pus (gross!..I know) and the right nostril was clear. The left side discharged a little more mucous but did not clear. I repeated the process focusing on the left side and on the second rinse, the left side also gave up a large blob of mucous also slightly tinged with a little blood and yellow pus. After then, my sinuses let go more mucous (no more blood and pus, just really thick mucous)than I have ever seen coming out of one person's nose. I could breathe clearly for the first time in over a week and the pressure and pain were greatly relieved. I can tell that I am not fully back to normal yet, but to have this much recovery in a matter of hours is WONDERFUL!! I feel so much better and wanted to pass this remedy along right away."

HOMEMADE XYLITOL NASAL SPRAY

Ratings:

YEA

[YEA]  07/28/2011: Dave J from Taylor, Mi writes: "I just tried a xylitol nasal spray to head off a sinus infection, and I HIGHLY recommend this remedy. It's the first and ONLY thing I have EVER found that effectively prevented an infection from taking hold -- and that cleared up my symptoms this quickly and effectively!

I've suffered from sinus infections for the past 25 years. If I get a cold, I'm guaranteed to get a sinus infection, no matter what I try. I've tried lots of remedies, including drinking & steaming with Apple Cider Vinegar (which helps); Flip-Turn saline rinses (these help a lot, too); and steaming with Cinnamon, Clove, and Thyme oils (doesn't seem to help me that much). I've also always had to take antibiotics on top of these remedies to clear up any sinus infection I've had.

Last weekend I noticed I had all the symptoms of an occult sinus infection --just a bit of green/yellow mucus, mostly in the morning; not feeling completely sick, but I was feeling drained, unfocused, a bit under the weather, and just not myself. Things were also obviously heading from bad to worse, even though I was using the other remedies I listed in the previous paragraph.

I've heard of xylitol nasal rinses but have never tried them before. I had good success using a xylitol mouth wash to cure a chronic toothache I had (from a dental procedure I had over 18 months ago), so I decided it was time to try xylitol for my sinuses.

I got a recipe from http://www.ehow.com/way_5457727_homemade-nasal-spray.html, bought the ingredients from the local health food store for about $18, and mixed up a batch. (It would take about a year of regular use to use up everything I bought, btw. ) Ingredients include xylitol, salt, and a couple drops of grapefruit seed extract (GSE), plus some baking soda to buffer the solution.

Two sprays in each nostril, and within 30 minutes I felt powerful results. I think my body went through a brief healing crisis, as I felt worse at first. I did 5 sprays in each nostril and added the flip-turn technique (which really helps get the spray in full contact with the ostea), and within another hour I felt significantly better. Got a good night's sleep, and the next day I felt about 90% cured.

After continuing to use the xylitol spray a couple times a day for the past 5 days, I feel FANTASTIC. I had enough energy to work a 14 hour day yesterday. And my nose has never felt this clear and free from post nasal drip since I developed sinus issues.

I believe if I had not used this spray, my entire week would have been shot. I'd have been bed-ridden for a couple days, unable to work, and taking yet another course of antibiotics. To say I'm pleased with the results of the xylitol spray would be a gross understatement!

I don't know yet how this remedy will work for me if I have a full-blown cold or sinus infection. However, I'll repeat that I have personally never found ANYTHING else that can stop a developing sinus infection in its tracks and clear it up this fast and this effectively. If you suffer from sinus issues, please give this a try."

Replies
07/28/2011: Bess from Calgary, Alberta, Canada replies: "Thanks, Dave, for the xylitol nasal spray link. I heard xylitol was good for nasal/sinus congestion but never actually tried it. We've been using an ordinary sea salt/baking soda solution so this will be a nice change and I have all the ingredients. I'm off to mix up a batch. Cheers! Bess"

HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES

[YEA]  04/11/2006: Frank from Palm Beach, FL writes: "Chronic sinusitis is caused by aspergillis fungus, a plant and vegetation borne fungus. There are several variants but aspergillis niger is the most common.. When the immune system is overloaded, the fungus creates a bacterial infection. Clearing the bacterial infection does not clear the cause. Aspergillis nosodes are available from Dolisos Homeopathic. two doses of 8 pellets three days apart will normally clear the fungus and end sinus problems permanently. If aspergillis niger doesn't work, try the other four variants. Any health food store carrying dolisos products can get these for you. (about $5.00) note this will cure the cause of the infection, not the current bacterial infection. generally sticta pulmonaria 30x and or stannum mettalicum 30x ; 4 tablets ,3times day will clear the bacterial infection."

[YEA]  03/25/2007: Laura from Westminster, Vermont writes: "I'm surprised that you have no mention of horseradish on your website. I used to take antibiotics at least once a year for sinus infections until 12 years ago when my naturopathic doctor recommended horseradish. Since then, I have had no problems if I eat a lot of horeradish (usually about a jar a day) at the first sign of infection. Until now, that is. I have developed a sinus infection and the horseradish I just brought home from the grocery store is not strong enough. So, I am going to try some of the other things listed here, at least until I can get my hands on some stronger horseradish."

[YEA]  08/04/2011: Patrick from East Storudsburg, Pa writes: "Ok, I'm going to share this in hopes it helps somone, the hot shower for sinus infections is the key:

As hot as u can stand it on your face and forehead, then I suggest not blowing your nose at all, instead imediatly after getting of the shower take some toilet tissue or cotton and plug ur nasil passages. Wait around 10 to 20 min, by then your sinuses should be opened up, gently blow your nose and after replug your nasil passages again , wait an hr then repeat the shower and redo all above, my nasal passages where so inflamed I had blood coming out, after one day of this the sinus passages were now clear. This was the only thing that helped me. It sounds weird but it worked!!!!! I think the reason was that the hot steam got into the passages and by plugging the nasal area up it let the warm vapor open the swollen passages up, letting the mucus to lossen up. Be warned when you get ready to expell your sinuses youll be suprised at what is released, nasty!!!! Good luck"

All I could dream about was an antibiotic from the doctor but didn't want to spend the money on our racket of a healthcare system. So I looked into homeopathic remedies and ended up here on this sight. Deciding against apple cider vinegar - although I do believe that it is some powerful stuff - the hydrogen peroxide was something I'd never heard of but sounded like a good idea. I shook some salt from the salt shaker into a small bowl, added about a 1/2 cup of warm water, then put in the hydrogen peroxide - just a glug - far less peroxide than water in my mixture. I dug out one of those blue baby booger suckers I used when my kids were smaller. Tipped my head back and squirted it in one side of my nose - it burned bad! This is not even the 50/50 mixture - but green & yellow snot with the fluid immediately came dripping out my nose and landed in the sink. It was really cool. I repeated this several times on each side until the snot stopped coming out. I can even breathe out of one nostril now. Wow! Thanks for this cool site! This was way better than antibiotics - even a little fun. :)"

[WARNING!]  02/08/2012: Gardner123 from Cincinnati, Ohio replies: "The person who says they use a 50/50 solution of peroxide to saline has to be joking! The first time time I tried the wash I used 2 tablespoons of peroxide to 1 packet of saline and 8 oz. Lukewarm water for my netti pot squeeze bottle (much easier than the netti pot). The first blast drove me to my knees it burned so bad. My nose foamed and I swear it felt like the foam came out my eyes and ears too. I know it didn't, but it sure felt like it did. As soon as I could breathe again and stand, I rinsed with plain, cool water. For an hour after that attempt, I could feel the uncomfortable bubbling sensation in the roots of my jaw teeth.

There is some validity to the treatment however. I now use 1 teaspoon with the saline solution. I was on antibiotics for a year, had my 2nd sinus surgery last year, and continued with aantibiotics for an ongoing sinus infection for another 7 months. I gave up on the antibiotics for the peroxide wash and have not had a sinus infection for 4 months now."

05/08/2011: Marlene from Nampa, Idaho, United States replies: "Mix 50/50 hydrogen peroxide and water. Put it in a nasal spray bottle and spray one squirt in each nostril twice a day. It clears out the infection almost right away."

[YEA]  04/18/2009: Minerva from Baton Rouge, LA writes: "Like many people who have written on this site, I suffered with sinus infections until the bouts with them became more frequent and intolerable. I would break down every year and get a steroid shot after becoming desperate. After finding this site, however, I decided to try the neti pot and added a tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide to the already pre-mixed solution packet in lukewarm water. I was not looking for a miracle, but must say that I feel like a new person after only a day and a half. I have used the solution three times and can tell that my glands are not as swollen and that my sinus passages are starting to open. I no longer have the eye or face pressure that is so painful with an infection. Truthfully, the mixture is not pleasant, but it works. After the first time you use it, you will get your same symptoms returning, but it is after the second/third use that you realize that you are being cured of your actual infection. Thanks to this web site I hope to never need antibiotics again. Thank you."

[YEA]  03/04/2009: Charles from Los Angeles, CA writes: "Hydrogen Peroxide + Neti Pot = No more Sinus Infection. I am a big believer in natural remedies (probiotics rock!) but my wife is a HUGE skeptic. She has been suffering from severe headaches with pressure in her forehead, eyes and cheeks for about a month. She has always had problems with her sinuses and has tried a neti pot with a saline solution, but with no luck. Before my wife went off to the doctor for another round of antibiotics (boo!) I found your website. What an incredible source of information. I followed some of the postings here and mixed up a 50/50 mix of lukewarm water and hydrogen peroxide in her neti pot. Almost instantly she said the pressure in her head subsided and her nose started pouring. As other people have commented the mucus was thinner and whiter than before and it did sting when she first started. But says it is definitely worth it."

03/06/2009: Charles from Los Angeles, CA replies: "No, we didn't use salt with the hydrogen peroxide, but my wife did use a saline solution after the peroxide mix. She's been using it for 3 days now and for the first time ever she gets a steady stream out of both nostrils using her neti pot.

I have another question for people - can you use too much hydrogen peroxide? At what point should you just use salt and water?"
[YEA]  03/07/2009: Jusin from Topeka, Kansas replies: "I'd like to thank Charles and Earth Clinic. a solution of Hydrogen Peroxide and water in a netti pot (or what I used, a decorative tea pot) and pouring it down through my nose cleared up the horrible pain I had. My pain on a scale of 1 (non-exisitant) to 10, 10 being the worst (pulling teeth because it would be easier to deal with), it would have been an 8. Not because of the bad sinus infection it's self but because of my bad (bad!!) tooth the infection was bothering."
[NAY]  03/07/2009: Scianna from Sacramento, Ca replies: "I tried the hydrogen peroxide, 1/2 cup warm water and 1 capful of the peroxide and I got the worst nose bleeds possible. I do not recommend this. Good thing I didn't do the 50/50!"
04/21/2009: Honesty from Durham, NC replies: "If your sinuses burn you are using too much peroxide! you should only use about a half a teaspoon per 10 oz of water. you should definitely NOT be putting a 50/50 mixture into your nose. It can and WILL make sinus symptoms worse if you use too much peroxide. Also, I would recommend using about a tsp of salt in the mixture as well."
04/01/2010: Vic from Los Angeles, Ca replies: "You should always use salt with the warm water and a little peroxide. The reason you should use salt and warm water its because it mimics what we already are made of. salt water mainly, actually the exact same amount that exists in our oceans. By using the salt or saline solution along with warm water it will not give you the drowning affect or pain in your nostrils. it will flow smoothly. Our bodys use peroxide as an antibotic. i also use peroxide when i have tooth aches or mouth rinse, anyway hope this helped."

[NAY]  01/16/2009: Lori from Kapaa, Hawaii writes: "I have had sinus congestion for the past several days real bad. I decided to try the 50/50 Peroxide/Water mix and squirt in each nostril. It burned like people said on your site and my nose started running like crazy, but it did NOT clear up my sinuses. Actually it increased the pressure in my sinuses so much that I did not sleep well at all, had a sinus headache, and my cheek bones hurt. I would not try that again."
