Cure Shingles

Updated: 10/23/2008

Shingles (also known as Herpes Zoste or the varicella-zoster virus) is a painful, blistering rash caused by the same virus as chickenpox. Shingles affects only a limited area of skin. Someone with shingles may feel unwell and develop a localized area of pain a few days before the rash appears. The rash starts off as red spots, which quickly turn into blisters. The pain from the blisters can be intense. The rash only affects one side of the body because the blisters appear on the area of skin connected to one particular nerve. Below are some of the best home remedies (sent by our readers) to cure shingles quickly.

ACV INTERNALLY, ALOE AND CAYENNE EXTERNALLY

1 YEA

[YEA]  10/05/2008: Bob from Boston, Ma writes: "I ended up on your site looking for a cure for shingles. I found it and it involved among other things Apple cider vinegar to be ingested and a mix of Aloe vera and crushed cayenne pepper rubbed on the redness which almost instantly brought the blisters to a head. I was done with shingles in about a week. Because of all the testimonials here, I decided to keep on taking the ACV orally 3 times a day. In liquid form or capsules. I realized that my flow of urine got stronger and started to last much longer. I had prostate problems for a few years and I was taking every day some very expensive herbal tea that was working somewhat. I decided to stop the herbal tea and stay on the ACV only. I now pee like a 15 years old and I'm not on any medication. ACV also cured me of my insomnia! Thank you Earth Clinic for such a great site."

ALOE VERA

2 YEA

[YEA]  04/28/2008: Susan from Sulphur, LA writes: "April 24th, 2008 I came down with shingles again. This is something I have dealt with for the last 13 years. In the past I have tried antibiotics, cortisone, etc. anything that I thought would bring relief. I was at my mothers and she told me to try the gel from an aloe leaf. To my surprise it brought great relief. I have done this 2 or 3 times a day. She also told me that once the blisters burst to apply honey to complete the healing process. I fully intend to try this at that time. It has been wonderful to have relief from this awful disease."

[YEA]  10/04/2007: Mafri from Zurich, Switzerland writes: "Another wonder of the world to be added-YOUR SITE! For 20 years my Fiance has been suffering with horrific Shingles, he has been to every skin Specialist there is, tried every cream, every oil and every natural product on the market. His feet are so bad, and so painful, causing more pain with certain foods- We have noticed that the worst are garlic, onions and spicy foods. 3 days ago, I was looking on the internet for a certain cream, very expensive especially after you have bought and tried almost everything. I came to your site and read all the posts, while doing so I looked what ingredients I had in the house, Aloe vera Gel - YES! Cayenne pepper- YES! Corn flour -YES! I went to the kitchen mixed it all up in bowl , got my fiance's feet and pasted it with the above, Now what? How does he go to sleep with all this on his feet? I took plastic wrap and wrapped his feet up, looking like a Astronaut he went to sleep with the paste and plastic.......... In the morning............. there was such a huge difference, are those really his feet. WOW! We are now on the 3rd day of nightly pasting and wrapping, the blisters are gone, the hard scaling skin is almost away, the only thing left is the redness. This is amazing!!! My only concern is with the plastic wrapping----- the feet don't get fresh air during this time, Thank you so much, I will keep you posted of the complete results in the future."

ANTI FUNGAL CREAM AND CHLOROX

1 YEA

[YEA]  03/19/2007: Izma from Hollywood, California writes: "From what I see of your numerous cures. It appears that Shingles may just dissappear. Personally I used the antifungal cream clotrimazole, followed the next day by Clorox disinfectant spray applied with a Q tip to each spot, and the shingles and the pain left.and havn't returned in more than five years. I had used the clorox spray before to no avail but when first used the anti fungal cream apparently that did the trick. Another thought viruses seem to be resistant to nearly everything but they may have a protective coating that takes a wetting agent to crack. and the anti fungal creme may have that ingredient. I know that it takes a wetting agent to break down ordinary mold, before clorox can disolve it. A chemist probably could explain this better than I can."

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR

11 YEA    2 NAY    2 MAYBE

[YEA]  10/23/2008: Donna from Halifax, Nova Scotia writes: "Apple Cider Vinegar for Shingles

I used cotton rounds soaked in Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) and swabbed area as often as I could, approx every hour. I also drank 2 tbsp mixed in juice, morning and night. Best to leave the soaked cotton on affected area as long as possible. On first attempt, I placed cotton on area and wrapped plastic around myself to keep cotton from moving, however, after approx 30 min the burning sensation was too strong and I had to remove plastic. From that point on I placed soaked cotton on affected area and laid down with it on my back for as long as I could. I saw a drastic improvement in less than 24 hours. The affected area looked better, pain had decreased substantially and rash stopped spreading. Never would have believed it if I hadn't tried it myself!!"

[YEA]  09/14/2008: Gena from Baltimore, Maryland writes: "My son had his first case of shingles (13yr) this week. I came upon your site and read the remedies from others. We tried the ACV. I soaked cotton balls in ACV and put them on the rash area for about 45 min. 2 times a day. I also had him drink 1 tbl ACV w/ 10oz of cold apple juice in the am and at night. His rash begin to heal overnight. His pain and rash went away within 3 days. I think that we will try this remedy when he feels the rash coming on. I believe that if you start it early on-this remedy will lessen the shingles time. Thanks so much to others who shared their remedies and to you for getting this info to others! Gena Taylor"

[YEA]  08/29/2007: Denise from Tampa, FL writes: "Shingles stopped with ACV -- I suddenly had severe stabbing pains in my back on the left side. A few hours of this and some red blisters were starting to appear. I read about the Apple Cider Vinegar and took 1 1/2 T in a glass of distilled water with some honey for taste. I had only 2 more stabbing pains and went to bed. In the AM the rash was gone. I am continuing to take the ACV twice a day and so far I feel like it is trying to break out again on my upper thigh, but then disappears due to the ACV. Time will tell, but I have no doubt that it is the ACV that is keeping it at bay."

[YEA]  08/06/2007: Dani from Melbourne, Australia writes: "My Bf got shingles almost 1 and a half weeks ago now. he went to the doctors and got anti viral tablets, and i spent almost a full day in between answering phone calls at work reading up on natural remedies,as i fuss over him, and wanted him to get better quick! im a quick fix type of person. i went out and brought him everything i had read about, ACV, tea tree oil, broccoli, fish, which i cooked with lemon grass, parsley, a killer amount of garlic and rosmary,to ensure he got a good does of all the good stuff, along with all these other things. he didnt want to drink the vinegar or have it on his body! "it stinked" according to him, and he didnt see how it'd help, so i maintained feeding him heaps of broccoli..with all of his meals and applied tea tree oil twice a day after his showers. this helped it maintained the rash and kept blistering to a minimal, but it was not a quick fix. last night i talked him into trying the vinegar as while the sores were slowly clearing he was starting to get sharp pains, and i told him it was either try everything natural to help otherwise acupunture, so the chicken decided we'll try the vinegar. i soaked cotton wool, i brough in strips from the supermarket in ACV placed it on his sores and wrapped him in cling wrap for a good 2 hours or so! he still had a few sharp stbbing pains for the first half an hour, but then the pain stopped and when we took the plastic and cotton off, the infected area had completely cleared up with the exception of a few little blisters. he woke up this morning, the affected area still looks great and the pain is minimal. a few more days of the ACV treatment and he should be 100% and would have dodged acupuncture completely."

[YEA]  09/28/2006: Sue from Charleston, SC writes: "I cut strips, sufficent to cover areas affected with Shingles, from a brown paper bag and soaked them in ACV. I placed them onto those areas and covered the entire area with cling wrap which kept the paper from drying. I was amazed at the results--immediate comfort, drying of small blisters, and my first night of painless sleep since they first appeared.

Note: I do not leave the treatment on overnight. I do use it at least twice a day for short periods. Thanks for the help your website provides."

[YEA]  03/22/2006: Phoebe from Zebulon, NC writes: "I read about the ACV on this website. About 2 weeks ago I began adding 2T of ACV in a quart of good water and sipping on it throughout the day. I immediately noticed more energy, exquisite bowel function, better kidney function and about a 1/2 pound a day weight loss. I noticed an outbreak of shingles starting, but after only a day, the process reversed and disappeared. This has never happened before. I have no other explanation other than the ACV."

[MAYBE]  06/05/2005: Virgil from Houston, Texas writes: "Can't say I am cured but applying the vinegar sure gave me pain relief. I apply when the posthepetic neuralgia pain kicks up and befroe bedtime. Started using the ACV last Tuesday, just 6 days ago. This is the best treatment so far. I had acupunture initially and it reduced the most severe pain by a lot however 6 treatments could not erase the remaining pain."

[YEA]  Brenda from Bear, DE writes: "I have lost 23 lbs. in 2 months. ACV Also helped me through a bout of shingles in a very short time. I use 2 TBS. of vinegar in 6 oz. water twice a day. I find it helps me more to take it right after lunch and supper. I don't feel so bloated after my vinegar drinks and swear this has took the weight off and makes me feel better overall."

[YEA]  Anonymous writes: "Yes, I tried vinegar, not orally, but rubbed it on the spot in my back that has given me horrific pain for 6 years, I have used Zonalon ($85 per tube, Empi ($45 per oz) and Capsascin, even athletes foot medicine, Aspercream, and this is so far, the most relief I have had. My shingles never blistered, but I was left with Posthepetic neuralgia which has been terrible. Worth a try, and you have it in your kitchen. I wonder how does it work, is it the acid?"

[YEA]  Ursula from Barrington, IL writes: "ACV has helped me with a recent bout of shingles. Instead of drinking the vinegar, I applied a solution of 1 tsp. ACV with 1/4 cup of water with some cotton balls. I also made a foot-bath with 1/4 cup of ACV and 1 gallon of warm water, twice a day for three days. The sores were healed within a few days and gone was the pain."

A month later, I got an itch and the small beginning bumps on both my right wrist and side, I started the ACV immeadiatly and the breakout never happened! Seems to work as a preventative too."

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR, VITAMINS, ACUPUNCTURE

1 YEA

[YEA]  04/02/2008: Bert from New Brunswick, NJ writes: "SHINGLES REMEDY I'm getting over a case of the shingles now. Thank you for all the inputs provided here...they really helped. Here's what worked for me. When the rash starts to appear accompanied with the burning sensation, apply vinegar to the rash. This will soothe the burn (this same remedy is used in jellyfish stings) Also use Neosporin to help with healing and the itching. Aleeve or Tylenol for the pain. TylenolPM at night to help me sleep. I also took Vitamin C, B and Lysine everyday. When the rash first appeared, I was in so much pain that I was willing to do anything that would ease the pain. My friend recommended acupuncture so on I went. My skin was so sensitive to touch that they could only apply the acupuncture needles in a small portion of the rash. The part of the rash that received the treatment never actually turned to blisters. It just became less red and went away. The rest turned into red bumps and blisters. That was my first time getting acupuncture. I was so nervous. I'm not a fan of needles at all but I think it really helped eased the pain and the rash. So if you are brave enough for it I think acupuncture works."

BLACK SALVE

1 YEA

[YEA]  10/16/2008: Kate from Nevada City, CA USA writes: "I have used black salve successfully on many different skin lesions, as well as moles. Two years ago I had an initial, very painful outbreak of shingles on my chest. After several days of suffering I decided to try black salve on the blisters. At first it hurt like heck, but it hurt anyway. By the next day the pain and itching were gone. It took a long time to heal completely, and a couple more spots appeared in the area along the way (which I treated also), but the pain was gone and it eventually healed nicely. I still have scars, but no more problems since.

I haven't seen any other postings for using it on shingles, so I thought someone might find it helpful."

10/20/2008: Kat from Drummond, Montana replies: "I just learned of black salve from a friend of mine who used it on a growth on her breast that looked like it had spider veins coming from it when xrayed. In 6 months time, when they re-xrayed that growth it was completely gone! I have psoriosis and am wondering if anyone has any info on me maybe trying this black salve on it"

CLAY

1 YEA

[YEA]  Jathinder from Kent, UK writes: "I have taken this opportunity to pass on this cure for shingles after my son suffered a severe case of shingles on his face. After trying several creams by the doctor which failed to work I decided to use a powered form of clay which I mixed to a medium paste with distilled water and put in on my sons face where the shingles first appeared, only covering the blistering ares. This enabled the drying clay to absorb the liquid coming from the blisters, as I found it was this liquid from his face when spread which caused further blisters when in contact with his skin. This helped contain the shingles to a small part of his face until the virus had taken its course. I hope this is of help but I know how helpless I felt when the first bout of shingles spread over half of my son's face with the creams doing nothing to help. The clay paste needs to be applied regularly as if too thick it cracks and flakes of, too thin and it will not absorb the weeping blisters therefore a consistency which you can see absorb the weeping blisters is fine."
