Cure Shingles

Updated: 01/31/2012

rss feed

Shingles (also known as Herpes Zoste or the varicella-zoster virus) is a painful, blistering rash caused by the same virus as chickenpox. Shingles affects only a limited area of skin. Someone with shingles may feel unwell and develop a localized area of pain a few days before the rash appears. The rash starts off as red spots, which quickly turn into blisters. The pain from the blisters can be intense. The rash only affects one side of the body because the blisters appear on the area of skin connected to one particular nerve. Below are some of the best home remedies (sent by our readers) to cure shingles quickly.

[YEA]  08/28/2011: Chrissy from Adelaide, Australia writes: "I recently had a serious bout of shingles; huge blisters from my clevage under my left arm through to my spine, After taking all the meds the doctor prescribed which did little to help the pain or help me to sleep, I decided to give acupuncture a try. The relief was instant, I have slept like a baby since beginning the treatment and the pain is very much under control. I'm only sorry I didn't get the treatment right from the onset as the acupuncturist says she could have stopped the shingles in it's tracks."

[YEA]  02/25/2007: Gloria from Salem, MA writes: "My friend came down with a painful case of shingles on her neck, into her hair, down to her chest and shoulders.I check your site and found a cure.First she soaked her feet in 1/4cup ACV and enough hot water to completely cover her feet doing this 2x a day, also dabbing straight ACV on the leasions with a cotton ball, it burns at first, followed by a cream. Made up of 1Tablespoon coconut oil,1 Tablespoon aloe vera gel and 1/4 tesp.cayenne pepper. Mix it up well and gently rub it in with a cotton ball. She also drank the ACV. 1 T.in water 3x day the blister came to a head that same day and the extreme pain decreased. By the third day she was healed. That was 3 weeks ago and she has had no reoccurence."

09/28/2011: David T from Fountain Inn, South Carolina replies: "I have found the cayenne is a key to killing the virus. We know the virus runs along the nerve. My favorite transport is DMSO. I believe the cayenne acts to "cauterize" the virus. However cayenne works, it kills the virus. Because you have to get it down to the nerve, DMSO is a great solvent as well as an anti-oxident and carrier. (Thus, make sure your hands are clean and the area of application is clean when you use DMSO. ) By the way, the younger shingles sufferer will be able to overcome shingles better than the older because the immune system can fight off the virus better.

To keep the cayenne from burning the skin I also add natural vitamin E. This must be the natural d-alpha tocopherol and not the synthetic E. Then I add any other herbal to "thicken" the mixture to make into a paste if needed. The paste should be very moist but not drippy.

I also add a dozen drops of colloidal silver to make sure the virus is killed.

So my anti shingles paste formula sufficent for two applications, one on day one, then skipping a day use a second time is as follows:

10 capsules of cayenne

10 capsules of natural vitamin E

20 drops of colloidal silver

20 drops of DMSO

any herbal/ corn meal etc to make the liquid more paste like as needed. Put into a bowl and mix until paste like.

Apply on top of affected areas. Let dry until the paste has hardened and is flaking off the skin. I even suggest if applied at night, after drying, put on a tea shirt and just let the paste fully incorporate overnight. Shower off in the morning. You will see the blisters have changed color from a bright red to a rust color... Part of the healing process. Even if the "blisters"are healed over, apply over sensitive spots. This will work to kill the virus even after months where the skin is healed back but pain remains. The pain is there because the virus still lives. This has worked so well... I would say 40 times... I am not a doctor of course, but when the regular medical community fails sometimes logical remedies work.

I also recommend that if one really wants to help the whole system fight the virus, take the cayenne orally, with food to avoid too much stomach burn, along with the natural vitamin E. Do this for a month. (I take these two as part of my own nutrient formula every day... 800 iu of the E and one capsule of cayenne.)

And so much of what is on this wonderful website is good science and good logic. Oh, of course be very careful if applying this formula to the face if the shingles are there; keep out of eyes."

[YEA]  11/19/2011: Nalatie from Farnham, Surrey replies: "Thank you so much to this site for saving me! I have Shingles so badly on my face/scalp/eye. So bad that my GP sent me to A&E eye clinic. The blistering and swelling has been so intense that I could not sleep from pain. After researching how long shingles could take to settle down I worried about my face and cancelled every appointment for the next 2 weeks. Suffering badly and fearing the worst I researched more about home remedies and came across this site.

I have used just ACV directly on the blisters on my face (Dabbed on cottonwool) and within 12 hours the blisters looked better. After 24 hours they have totally dried up and are completely calming down. I am still dabbing the blisters every 3 hours. Along with Anti Virual, antibiotics and pain killers the blisters are less painful. ACV alone HAS helped and been the cure. ALos taking one cap in water. Take what you can as ACV is the best cure. Don't be afraid just dab it on and keep persisting as it takes the pain away and also the yellowness from the blisters!

Thank you to everyone that has written about this unbelievable aid to an extremely pain and horrid virus."

12/08/2011: Phyllis from Port Elizabeth, South Africa replies: "Natural cures for shingles. In your excellent website I found a paste for shingles with an ingredient called DMSO. What is that?"
12/09/2011: Louwrence from Rustenburg, North West South Africa replies: "Hi Phyllis, The DMSO draws everything that you mix with it into the skin with it, that is probably why the shingles remedy was mixed with the DMSO."

In the past I have tried antibiotics, cortisone, etc. anything that I thought would bring relief. I was at my mothers and she told me to try the gel from an aloe leaf. To my surprise it brought great relief. I have done this 2 or 3 times a day. She also told me that once the blisters burst to apply honey to complete the healing process. I fully intend to try this at that time. It has been wonderful to have relief from this awful disease."

For 20 years my Fiance has been suffering with horrific Shingles, he has been to every skin Specialist there is, tried every cream, every oil and every natural product on the market. His feet are so bad, and so painful, causing more pain with certain foods- We have noticed that the worst are garlic, onions and spicy foods. 3 days ago, I was looking on the internet for a certain cream, very expensive especially after you have bought and tried almost everything. I came to your site and read all the posts, while doing so I looked what ingredients I had in the house, Aloe vera Gel - YES! Cayenne pepper- YES! Corn flour -YES! I went to the kitchen mixed it all up in bowl , got my fiance's feet and pasted it with the above, Now what? How does he go to sleep with all this on his feet? I took plastic wrap and wrapped his feet up, looking like a Astronaut he went to sleep with the paste and plastic.......... In the morning............. there was such a huge difference, are those really his feet. WOW! We are now on the 3rd day of nightly pasting and wrapping, the blisters are gone, the hard scaling skin is almost away, the only thing left is the redness. This is amazing!!! My only concern is with the plastic wrapping----- the feet don't get fresh air during this time, Thank you so much, I will keep you posted of the complete results in the future."

What if you wrapped his feet in old cotton dish towels or some flannel fabric, and perhaps he put a pair of cotton sox on over that?
If that's possible. Sounds like it might work very well. L-Lysine is an amino acid that helps to prevent outbreaks of shingles, ass well as cold sores. If some folks have too much L-Arginine (another amino acid) in their system, it creates an imbalance of L-Lysine and may cause the immune system to produce a flare-up of shingles or cold sores (also known as herpes simplex). Those 2 amino acids are naturally occuring in protein foods (esp. Meat). However other foods have them also. Does he still have problems with shingles?

I just discovered this site as I developed shingles 4 days ago and am now on meds to treat it. I need help with alleviating the pain and horrible sensations from it. The blisters are like water blisters, but the pain feels like someone used a red hot branding iron on me. On me the blisters popped out on my lower left belly and back. I never knew anyone could develop such a painful rash. Now I understand."

The blisters have dried, the redness has significantly decreased and the pain has all but gone. I did try the ACV but found that it stung a lot and irritated the blisters. I did take it internally though. Last night I was writhing in pain unable to speak, today the pain is manageable and significantly better."

I've struggled with painful shingles for years now and used Calamine Lotion, Betadine, Alchol (ouch ) and everything imagineable. I discovered Aloe Vera gel to soothe and it works great but it only helps the pain and does nothing to cure. I often use pure ___ Eucylyptus Oil (___) for aches and pains. It works wonders by the way, just rub it in and joint and muscle pain is gone. Anyway I had a backache so hubby rubbed some on my back and I begged him please, please dont get it on the Shingles thinking it would hurt. Well, as he got in the areas near them and not even touching I could feel the pain go away. Could it be ? So I very carefully put it on a tiny spot. NO PAIN. AND I SWEAR IT ERASED THEM. We tried just one area the first night and really massaged it in because it didnt hurt at all to touch them once the AEO was on there. They simply disappeared in that spot. I couldn't wait to put it everywhere the next day. All thats left is a couple very small stubborn spots but with the oil they dont hurt at all ! It does smell strong - like Vicks so during the day I use the Aloe Vera gel to soothe any new breakouts but as soon as I get home from work I rub the ____ on it and massage it in and you can watch them disappear. It's amazing ! I hope there's no side effects. Been doing it for a week now. I'll post if there is any downside."

ANTI FUNGAL CREAM AND CHLOROX

[YEA]  03/19/2007: Izma from Hollywood, California writes: "From what I see of your numerous cures. It appears that Shingles may just dissappear. Personally I used the antifungal cream clotrimazole, followed the next day by Clorox disinfectant spray applied with a Q tip to each spot, and the shingles and the pain left.and havn't returned in more than five years. I had used the clorox spray before to no avail but when first used the anti fungal cream apparently that did the trick. Another thought viruses seem to be resistant to nearly everything but they may have a protective coating that takes a wetting agent to crack. and the anti fungal creme may have that ingredient. I know that it takes a wetting agent to break down ordinary mold, before clorox can disolve it. A chemist probably could explain this better than I can."

I used it every 4 hours but did reduce the dose to one -two Tablespoons. I added lysine and cats claw. By the time I saw the doctor I was much more comfortable. I have been able to sleep and have not used anything for pain control other than the three I mentioned. I did start on an anti-viral 12 hours later. 10/13/2011: Bigeasybunny from Houston, Texas writes: "Suffering with shingles for the first time, went to doctor who prescribed anti-viral and pain meds, weeks later, still suffering internal pain and external itching/burning (thought the blisters have cleared). Found this site and started the ACV 3 T a day, drinking it using a shot glass, and follow up with tsp of honey.

Instant relief from the deep internal pain after the first dose and has not returned! Able to sleep soundly and even turn over and lie on my back and side where the shingles are! Dabbing the area with mix of ACV and sprinkle of cayenne pepper 3-4 times a day also helps with the external itching/burning, and in between, also use pure aloe vera gel and hydrocortisone cream.

As recommended on this site, I also started taking Lysine 1, 000 mg 3 times a day, and cayenne pepper pills 40,000 HU (processed to be cool in the stomach) 3 times a day, both with food. Am so grateful to be almost completely pain free and able to sleep soundly (though I wake up itching and apply hydrocortisone and get instant relief and right back asleep). I also recommend boosting your immune system with Vit C and diet. "

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  09/17/2011: Amanda from Anchorage, Alaska writes: "I would like to say this information was very helpful! I've never had shingles before and had four docs misdiagnosed me until they got it right! At 29 years old and coming down with a unknown rash in well, a very fragile area that started at my tail bone and wrapped down and around was one, very embarrassing and two, didn't feel the best!

I woke up this past Sunday with the shingles and never had a sign that it was coming.. Nor the true signs of symptoms.. No pain.. No itch.. No burning.. I guess in that part I was rather lucky.. When I went to the doc that diagnosed it I was already past the point of the anti viral meds working.. So I was looking for anything herbal that might help clear them up faster.. So I bought the gallon size bottle of Apple Cider Vinegar and started cleaning the affected areas right away.. Not gonna lie.. Yes it burns.. I started with one good soak and scrub and noticed a difference right away.. Later that night I did another soak and scrub and by the next morning I noticed the sores had already dried up and swelling had gone down! Now two days later it's dark.. And dried up.. Wouldn't say 100% gone.. But much better then what it was when I started..! I'm following up with zinc oxide ointment and lysine vitamin.

I would like to say thank you as reading everyone else's first hand experience has been rather helpful. I think a few good more soaks and scrubs and it will keep getting better and better.. And will heal up faster compared to if I would have just let it runs it's course as the doctor stated.. It's a pretty nasty experience and embarrassing.. I think I showed my bum to more people in the past week then my entire life.. Best of luck to everyone who experiences shingles!"

After three days of applying poison ivy meds, including the apple cider vinegar therapy, which actually caused mine to worsen as the Apple Cider Vinegar initiated furious blistering and swelling, I went to the dr who diagnosed shingles and started me on a potent anti-viral. I also went to the health food store (Akins) and got a gel rub which works wonderfully for relieving pain and itch. Also taking 1,000 mg Lysine 3x a day and 1-2, 000 mg of a good quality Vit C 3x a day. Shingles is a very serious ailment and can be life debilitating."

I started ACV treatment yesterday ( drunk ACV with water and washed rush with ACV with cotoon ball). I also take multivitamin, vitamin B and tons of vitamin C. Aloe Vera bring some relief too.

Last night I woke up for the first time with pain and had to take a pain killer. I am not sure if ACV helps or not. It's too early to say. But my cold like symptoms are gone and skin seams less sensitive too today.

Did you know that Edgar Cayce had a solution for shingles too? Check this out :

I don't think my diet is poor but I did injure my spine and I am under a lot of stress recently so it could trigger my shingles. I have not tried Edgar's treatment yet.

[YEA]  06/30/2009: CJK from Augusta, ME writes: "Apple Cidar Cinegar cured my shingles. I'm 37 yrs old and was shocked when my dr. said the word shingles!! I thought it was a spider bite for the 1st 2 days, and then on the 3rd, it started to blister. That's when I knew, something was very wrong. My dr. prescribed an anti-viral, and antibiotic, and pain med. By the next morning I was in so much pain I cried, I decided to surf the net to see if I could find anything useful. Thank goodness I came across this site! I immediately went to the store and picked up apple cidar vinegar, L-Lysine and Vitamin C. The ACV was a miracle!!! I didn't drink it because my stomach was already upset from the med's. I applied it to large gauze pads and wrapped it with seran wrap. After an hour I removed it and it already looked better and definately felt better. After 3 days the blisters are level with my skin and are not as painfull. I can only imagine what would have happened without the ACV. Try it, what do you have to loose?.......... besides horrific pain!!!! THANK YOU, Sincerely, CJK"

[YEA]  05/17/2009: Sam from London, UK writes: "Hi all, in January 09 i came down with a case of shingles on the right side of my face. It was excruciatingly painful. Once the blisters had cleared up and I could again open my eye, I thought I was on the mend. However I was left with neuralgia in the nerve endings in the right side of my face and head. I went to the doctor to see what he could give me for it as this was preventing me from sleeping each night and I was slowly going in insane. The only thing he could suggest for me was anti-depressants. No way! Not for a pain on my face, however much it hurt! So to cut a long story short I did a lot of research. ACV kept coming up over and over. One morning the pain was soo bad and frustrating as I could'nt keep my fingers from it that I couldn't leave the house. I remembered that I had brought the ACV to try and took 2 tablespoons of it in desperation. Magically the itching and burning sensation stopped almost within minutes. I thought I was imagining it. However I continued to take it every time the pain came back and each time it had the same affect. 2 tbsp every couple of hours. Or whenever you feel the need. Hope you find this helpful. Take care"

12/30/2011: Brenda from Riverton, Illinois, Usa replies: "Thank you Sam for your results with ACV for the nerve pain from Shingles. I have had the nerve pain for 7 months now. It has been horrible. The meds the doctor wanted me to take all had horrible side effects and I wouldn't take them. I've been trying to find natural relief. I did take 5-HTP which has helped a little. I started my husband on ACV for gout and he had complete relief in 3 days. I wanted to try ACV for my shingles nerve pain, but couldn't stand the taste. Another submitter suggested using 2 packets of lemon powder and 2 packets of stevia in a glass of water with the ACV. This tastes so much better that I am now going to take ACV daily to see if I can get relief from this pain. Again thanks and I hope you and I do not get any further shingles episodes."

[YEA]  03/05/2009: Kelly from Lake Cathie, N.S.W-Australia writes: "What I first thought were infected insect bites turned out to be shingles. While I did not have any pain, I had extremely itchy lumps that blistered and spread till they formed one large area on my neck and were popping up in other places as well. I had tried various things like hydrogen peroxide, aloe vera gel and betadine but they only gave temporary relief from the itching and did not stop them spreading. I remembered your site and read about using ACV for shingles and thought I would give it a go before I gave up and went to the doctor. I just used a cotton-ball and dabbed it straight onto the whole area that was affected every couple of hours. It gave me immediate relief from the itching (although it stung a bit for a few minutes) and within a couple of days it had dried up completely, the scabs were healing and it had stopped spreading. It is now about a week since I started using ACV and the shingles have virtually disappeared. Thanks heaps!"

Well, tonight is the first night that I have used it and already I am seeing less redness and swelling in the areas of the Shingles. I am currently drinking 2 teaspoons mixed w/ juice. It tastes as it smells but I don't care as long as it keep working!!! :) My Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles and Dad all swear by ACV!! So far it's working!! Thanks for the info!!"

[YEA]  11/29/2008: Steve from Ballina, Australia writes: "After six days of the really intense pain of Shingles on my scalp and right forehead - and this using the prescribed medication and painkillers, I looked up cures on the internet and found this site. ACV seemed to have the most comments and it was something I knew I could get from the local supermarket. I took the two tablespoons in juice orally as one writer had suggested and within minutes the pain had dulled to a tolerable level. This was about 8pm in the evening. I also dabbed the rash with straight ACV. Not looking forward to yet another sleepless night I took a second oral dose of ACV and all my doctor prescribed stuff just before going to bed at about 11pm. I am writing this the morning after the only unbroken sleep I have had all week. I have taken another dose of ACV with the other stuff this morning. I still have some pain but it is tolerable and I now think the other option I considered ie. chopping my head off, was perhaps a little too drastic."
