I recently tried apple cider vinegar and hydrogen peroxide, which helped a little, but not that much. I did notice recently, however, after coloring my hair with henna, my scalp felt much better, not itchy and irritated at all. A little internet research suggested that henna is in fact a treatment for dandruff, lice, and other scalp issues. The only downside to this would be the fact that it's a dye of sorts, so you'd have to be willing to go with that. Worked great for my purposes, however, and I wasn't even anticipating it helping my scalp issues! "

This fungus is naturally found on human skin, but if it's overactive it causes a fast turnover of skin cells. In other words, Malassezia produces flakes faster in dandruff sufferers than in people without dandruff. If you have oily hair (like me) then you're more susceptible to dandruff, since Malassezia feeds on sebum, the oily matter produced by the sebaceous glands in our skin. This is the real secret. When I tell most people they just think it's gross and don't hear me out. :) When I hop in the shower in the morning I give my scalp a vigorous 15 second rinse under the water. This gets the visible oiliness out of my hair, but doesn't actually strip my scalp of any oil. It's washing without washing. When you first do this you'll notice that your hair might feel a little "sticky. " Don't worry, you have to give it time to adjust. The interesting thing is after a few days my scalp seemingly stopped producing so much oil. I don't know the science behind it, and I haven't been able to find conclusive studies about it, I just know it works. Some people use baking soda and vinegar. Or lemon juice. These products don't strip your hair of its oils. Good luck to all of us suffering from... I call it: "shampoo-itis" "

I started mixing one part raw, unfiltered organic apple cider vinegar with one part filtered water in a spray bottle and spraying it all over my scalp, massaging briefly, and rinsing before I shampoo. It seems that shampoos get my scalp dry and every time before I wash it (only once/week) I apply warm olive oil on my scalp and leave it for 5-10 minutes, and sometimes even longer. Recently, I am experiencing a more than usual itchiness, my scalp has red spots as if I have a mild sunburn, even though I am not exposed to the sun. Also, I have noticed tiny white flakes all over my scalp, this is a new symptom I did not have before. I tried the anti-dandruff shampoo only to find it made it worse! I am running out of options and do not know what to do. I read about using the apple cider vinegar and the hydrogen peroxide. I will try this today to see if this helps. Please let me know what can I do.!!!! "

I've been reading about alkalinizing your body to help with SD and started using (2 TBlspns) apple cider vinegar and baking soda( 1/4 spoon) along with 8 oz of water on an empty stomach for once daily( two days in a row). By the second day afternoon I started noticing stomach cramps and diarrhea. I have not taken it today, but I have a lot of stomach cramping and gas. I'm burping a lot of gas too. My head was itching a lot, but I use hairgel and hairspray every day, so I thought it might be that. But to rule out dandruff, I tried this method. I put equal amounts of apple cider vinegar and water in an empty hairspray bottle. I then shampooed my hair as usual and rinsed it. Then I sprayed (and poured) the mixture on my head and rubbed it in for about 4 minutes (careful not to get it in your eyes! ). Then I rinsed it out. Then I put in some Tea Tree oil conditioner I found at a nearby healthfood store, and rubbed that into my scalp. I let it sit for another 4 mins or so, then rinsed it out. I did this twice, about 2 days apart, and my head doesn't itch AT ALL anymore! and I still use my same hairgel and hairspray. What a wonderful cure! Thank you Earth Clinic for sharing it! "

We tried a lot of cures like rubbing oil on his scalp before going to the sauna, rinsing with ACV, a milder shampoo and the only thing that seemed to help was toasted sesame oil which I can't find easily here in France. Still, we have discovered that although everything seems to work the first day after that his hair would be covered in dandruff again. Now we use mustard oil before the sauna, wash with the mild shampoo and rub a bit of coconut oil every morning and evening. He also washes his hair less often and so far so good! The coconut oil seems to keep his scalp moist and therefore free of dandruff!"

Took Tetracycline (anti-bacterial) from 18 to 24. I believe this killed off all my good bacteria which caused a chronic SD infection. I subscribe to the theory that there are bacteria which feed on the SD yeast. I've tried everything ... topical ACV was the winner for a long time, but the SD would always come back. I had been juice fasting for a whole month, had a colonic and the practitioner recommended fermented foods. I came across a posting that prescribed eating lots of sauerkraut for SD. After a hair cut I could see the red scaly areas and my bald forehead was very red. I was so worried that I tried a little of everything, ACV, alcohol, milk of Magnesia, colloidal silver, it got better then it came back again a day or two later. Thinking that it was the coal tar that was working but it came back, knowing something worked I had to go through and try again, this time with Ted's 1/p ACV 1/p H202, 10/p water and things are clearing up fast at 40 hours later. I washed w/ ACV solution let it sit for 5 min then rinsed. Then applied Aloe Vera gel and let that set for the night next morn cold shower wash w/ ACV solution then shampooed w/ my old stand by natural citrus from TJ's. I decided to stay away from SLS which is the main ingredient in the baby shampoo, coal tar, and many other so called psoriasis shampoos. "

I read through all the posts and did the following; Raw, unfiltered, organic AC vinegar and tap water 1:1 ratio in spray bottle. Adjust to stream and seperated sections of hair to soak scalp. I just let it dry overnight, next morning I brushed it out and things looked better. I went to whole foods and picked up the tea tree oil. When I got home, I added @25 drops of tea tree oil to spray bottle that had 1/2 cup ACV and 1/2 cup water. Same method of application and again, left it over night. I washed hair with my new DE shampoo and conditioner. WOW!! 90% better!! My hair has not been this shiny in ages. My scalp does not hurt. Minor,random itch.I can pull my hair back and am not worried. I have great hope that this is my answer. Dandruff shampoos never really worked for me and this last batch seemed to make it worse. My hair looked awful. Keeping my fingers crossed and will post again after giving this method some time. Thanks to all who posted information. "

When I say severe, I would have flakes the size of a pencil eraser, daily, with the itching scalp. I was always told that topical treatments were the only way, so I used shampoos. I also used apple cider vinager as a scalp wash externally. This worked, but I knew an external treatment was not the real cure to dandruff, dandruff came from the inside out, so it must be treated from the inside out. The REAL CURE FOR DANDRUFF is a vitamin deficency, in particular B-complex vitamin's. These vitamins are destroy in todays food because heating foods and pasturization. I am currently in my first year of schooling to becoming a Homeopath. My nutrition teacher has been preaching about B-Complex vitamins. The type of vitamin you buy is VERY IMPROTANT, you can not buy cheap vitamins. I have no ties with any companies, but what I used and trust is _____. They are a whole food vitamin and totally organic. The majority of B-Complex vitamins you can not take on an empty stomach, because they will cause nausea. These whole food B-vitamins are one of the few that can be taken on an empty stomach with no side effects. Anyways, this is the first complete month of my life being dandruff free, curing the problem from the inside out, addressing the root cause, not treating the symptom. I juice carrots, celery, garlic, and dark green lettuce daily (12 oz) 2 TBSP of Apple Cider Vinegar before each meal I take acidophilus 1 juice an onion and add it to my shampoo then apply to hair for 3-5 mins. then follow up with another wash 1 take homeopathic sulphur 30 c according to the directions. This has helped me so much that I wanted to share. SD is very painful, irritating, and embarrassing."
