Dandruff Remedies
Dandruff, medically known as seborrheic dermatitis, is a type of eczema of the face and scalp. It results in red, itchy skin but is best recognized by the scaly flakes of skin that tend to fall from the scalp and out of the hair--the stuff we recognize as dandruff. The condition affects the sebum glands, resulting in dried out skin.
Several herbal remedies and natural treatments can help prevent dandruff, reduce flaking, and minimize dandruff irritation. Check out our natural dandruff shampoos and other home remedies below!

TED'S ACV AND H202 CURE
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand writes: "Hydrogen peroxide/apple cider vinegar might help in removing the source of dermatitis. Apply that first, wait for a couple of minutes, then rinse. This is then followed by a generous application tea tree oil to the entire scalp. Wipe of the excess, leave it overnight. Based on my own personal experience, one application does it. If it comes back in a couple of months, redo the above. Dandruff should go away in 2-3 days.
Recipe using Apple Cider Vinegar and Hydrogen Peroxide: Dilute them by 1:10: 1 part ACV, 1 part Hydrogen Peroxide with 10 parts water. Use like a shampoo and rinse after the shampoo is "finished" to make the cure for scalp infections even more potent.
More details:
Leave the mixed solution on scalp for about one minute before rinsing away in water. Repeat this again if the infection is severe enough. Avoid getting the solution in the eyes as it may cause stinging. You do not need large amounts of the concoction, only small amounts... just enough to get it to the scalp.
Again, it seems to work with remarkable consistency. For some reason, I found using shampoo as the cause of dandruff. I don't know what they put in. However, an easy way to test it is do apply it on your skin to see if you have a skin reaction, after applying the pure shampoo over the arms for a couple of hours.
If you want to permanently reduce the problems of shampoo caused dandruff, the addition of small amounts of sodium thiosulfate and tea tree oil and lavender oil to a non fragranced shampoo will solve most of the problems. I now make my own shampoo for my mother and sister due to brand name shampoo causing severe itchiness and dandruff. This formula seems to work very well and never had any problems. One application, strangely is all you need. Perhaps severe dandruff might need 2-3 applications.
If the problems persist use aloe vera oil and tea tree oil apply to scalp. This is done only once. Aloe vera oil will heal the scalp.
Take lots of vitamin C for a week. This will also help healing.
One of the causes of scalp problems is inability for body to absorb vitamin A. It's been my experience that people with scalp problems not drink or eat fresh carrot juice as often (usually never!) and this will help the body absorbed the needed vitamin A. Synthetic vitamin A, even natural ones they sell in supermarkets don't seem to work.
3/22/2005 UPDATE:
There is a lot of misunderstandings in the use of aloe vera in the use of severe dandruff. The ONLY aloe vera that I found useful in dandruff is ALOE VERA OIL. But aloe vera oil alone is not effective unless when mixed with tea tree oil AND/OR lavender. If you are desperate (seems you are) use pure tea tree oil and apply it throughout your head - soaked. Do this for three days in the row. If it doesn't work, then complain!
Another little known information is that I found many people who DON'T DRINK enough water (avoid count tea, coffee, coke, beer) have severe dandruff. Sometime ago, I told some colleague as a passing remark to drink 0.5 liter in the morning before breakfast, 0.5 liter of water before lunch, 0.5 liter of water before dinner, and 0.5 liter of water before sleep. (Water must be dechlorinated). What was so amazing was persistent skin peeling (which lasted years) and dandruff stopped within a week. Recently I had this problem myself - horrible facial skin peeling for months and cured myself after finding my urine conductivity exceeded 90,000 siemens (heathy levels is about 40,000). So excess blood salinity could possibily be another cause. Excess salinity causes cellular dehydration, which in turn causes skin scaling, in my case facial skin peeling, in your case possibly severe dandruff.
Avoid absolutely the use of all shampoos. Use only a very mild soap to shampoo your hair. Salts in shampoos contributes to dandruff - which again causes scalp dehydration. Follow this by putting borax to saturation to the water and wash your hair, then rinse. Borax have antifungal and antiparasitic properties.
You need not do frequent shampooing of hair. Just do enough. This is then followed by apple cider vinegar and small amounts of common drug store 3% hydrogen peroxide mixed to it(if you are that desperate). These severe dandruff are usually fungus, which is why the treatment is so detailed. Fungus is really difficult to get rid of, but it was not a problem down here in Bangkok.
The small amounts of 3% hydrogen peroxide can be added a bit to apple cider vinegar. Since this is used only externally, you won't have trouble finding the hydrogen peroxide. Just get the 3% hydrogen peroxide they use at drug stores.
Once your hair is all dried and everything, before going to sleep, apply pure tea tree oil. If not, add some 50/50 with aloe vera oil, if you find it too strong. However aloe vera oil need not be applied for everyday. You need to apply it for only once a month, if need be. Again, these procedures more or less cured my friend of a severe dandruff problems. The tea tree to effect a reduced visible dandruff, was effective after 1-3 applications (1-3 days). Actually, I was satisfied with just one application, and it was manageable after that. You need to follow this by a maintenance dose of this (usually just tea tree and some alo e vera oil would do it) once a month.
Apple cider vinegar is needed to remove scaling of dandruff, but for maintenance - monthly or weekly, just apple cider vinegar, tea tree and aloe oil might do. Aloe vera oil is used only once every 2 weeks or a month. You don't need to use it that often and it is always mixed with tea tree oil and sometimes in combination with lavender oil - in case tea tree were a bit too irritating.
If you are STILL having problems, consider taking internally a peroxide form of colloidal silver. The procedure is simple. Buy any colloidal silver, add one drop of 3% food grade hydrogen peroxide and take it 1-3 tablespoon/day. Again, this is not needed now, and I know you will have trouble finding them. We will discuss this later.
Again, if YOU ARE STILL HAVING problems, eat one large onion a day - in salads or sardines (mixed with lemon) And add this onion juice to shampoo your head. Dandruff is a sulfur deficiency and my grandmother used onions to cure dandruff. I used onions - amazing stuff - to cure my hypoglycemia conditions. Onions lowers (or suppresses) blood glucose helps with dandruff condition by allowing normalization of cellular metabolism, instead of cellular death, which causes dandruff.
I hope this helps! If not, send me another feedback. There are other methods that will work also, but I have so little information regarding your health (pH, salinity, etc.) that I am generalizing these treatments."

04/14/2011: Abi from London, England replies: "Any idea what strength the peroxide should be? I have used 3% which was what I could buy in the chemist, have done the treatment twice and it hasn't worked. Any advice would've welcomed. Thanks."
04/29/2011: K from Cairns, Australia replies: "We live in a very tropical climate and dandruff here for a lot of people is a problem. Im not sure if it has to do with the tropics or salt water or what. My partners dandruff was getting really out of control. We have black bed sheets and pillow casses so you could only imagine what those looked like in the morning. IT WAS BAD! He had used dandruff shampoo most of his life and that made it better but never got rid of it. I have been all about natural remedies for years. When I realized how bad the problem got I had to do something about it. My first thaughts were to use ACV (organic mother raw) and tea tree oil which are products that I always have on hand. I wasnt sure how exactly to execute this so I looked on line and got to this site. GREAT!
I diluted the ACV and used H202 as well. 1:10 of each. filled the rest of the botle up with clean filterd water. I also added a couple tblsp of tea tree oil and aloe vera oil to the mix. Shook up the btl and generously applied it to his dry scalp as I massaged the mixture in. He let it soak in for about 10 min then got into the shower and washed it out with organic tea tree soap (not regular shampoo ever! ) as he was showering he took a fine comb and combed as much dandruff off his scalp as he could. There were clups falling out! When he got out of the shower and dried his hair you could see a remarkable diference. There were no more dry patches on his scalp and no more flakes.
We then applied a good amount of teatree and aloe vera oil straight onto his scalp and he kept it in for the next 8 hrs. Before bed that night he showered and washed his head only with the organic teatree soap to get rid of the strong scent of the straight oils that we applied earlier. When we got up the next morning there was not even a single flake in our bed and his scalp was totally gorgeous! Now he keeps the mixture in the shower and if he feels the need to use it he will. That should keep it maintained. He will never use a regular shampoo again. Only herbal organic shampoos or organic soaps.
If anyone wants to get rid of dandruff please try this method. But you must realize that it is very very important to stop using all chemical un natural products. The more natural and organic you eat and live the better your body will maintain its natural ph levels and be able to start healing its self.
This method was effective for us because we eat very well and we dont use any chemicals. So if you are still having dandruff problems you must evaluate your whole lifestyle and get to the sources of your problems. Most things need to be fixed from the inside out. Vitamin A and clean unchlorinated water are a big key."

[YEA] 12/31/2011: Annette from Fairbanks, Alaska writes: "Dandruff remedy
According to this BBC News Health article, dandruff and itchy scalp are caused by overactive Malassezia fungus. This fungus is naturally found on human skin, but if it's overactive it causes a fast turnover of skin cells. In other words, Malassezia produces flakes faster in dandruff sufferers than in people without dandruff.
If you have oily hair (like me) then you're more susceptible to dandruff, since Malassezia feeds on sebum, the oily matter produced by the sebaceous glands in our skin.
This is the real secret. When I tell most people they just think it's gross and don't hear me out. :)
When I hop in the shower in the morning I give my scalp a vigorous 15 second rinse under the water. This gets the visible oiliness out of my hair, but doesn't actually strip my scalp of any oil.
It's washing without washing.
When you first do this you'll notice that your hair might feel a little "sticky. " Don't worry, you have to give it time to adjust.
The interesting thing is after a few days my scalp seemingly stopped producing so much oil. I don't know the science behind it, and I haven't been able to find conclusive studies about it, I just know it works.
Some people use baking soda and vinegar. Or lemon juice. These products don't strip your hair of its oils.
Good luck to all of us suffering from... I call it: "shampoo-itis""

[YEA] 12/24/2011: Tara from Baton Rouge, La writes: "I'm 24 years old, and I've had dandruff for several years. Often I would get build-ups of cells and scabs on the back of my itchy scalp. I started mixing one part raw, unfiltered organic apple cider vinegar with one part filtered water in a spray bottle and spraying it all over my scalp, massaging briefly, and rinsing before I shampoo. My dandruff was completely gone within the first two treatments and has been gone for months now. I do it a few times a week. Although the smell was hard to handle at first, I'm now in love with apple cider vinegar. It's still not exactly pleasant, but the benefits are so worth the smell and taste, which don't last very long anyway. I use it for many other things, which I'll report later! :)"
Replies[YEA] 12/31/2011: Fifi from Gold Coast, Qld, Australia replies: "Hi everyone, I'm 28 and had been searching for a remedy to treat seborrheic dermatitis on my face for about 3 years. Finally, this year it has cleared up and I believe that raw apple cider vinegar with the mother helped a lot. I do not really suffer from SD on my scalp, it only appears there in small patches in winter which clears with shampoo. The sides of my nose were the main problem area. I had constant pink patches on the skin there, which would sometimes burn. I had hardly any flaky skin, just the pink, sometimes red irritated patches.Anyway, it was diagnosed by a dermatologist as SD and after a couple of years of on and off again treatments prescribed by him and my family doctor, I decided to change my diet and my skin care routine.
Ten months ago, I cut virtually all yeast from my diet. I stopped using prescribed medications on my SD. There was an initial flare up as my skin was addicted to the steroid cream I had been using. I began to use a face wash which is very calming. I used filtered water to dilute raw Apple Cider Vinegar with mother in a small spray bottle. After cleansing and whenever I thought of it during the day, I would soak my face with the spray. I would keep my eyes closed with a folded tissue held over them. At first the smell was bad but it does not last long. I did this intense soaking everyday for about 2 months and then as the SD improved I cut back to doing it morning and night. I stopped spraying and just used a soaked cotton ball.
I also use the Apple Cider Vinegar as a salad dressing and mixed into tuna. Ten months on my SD has not returned and my skin has never looked better. I still avoid eating yeast but I am not as strict. I stopped using the Apple Cider Vinegar on my face, but I think I will start to use it again as a toner after reading everyone's great reviews here. I am also going to try the baking soda face scrub. I think it is important to dilute the Apple Cider Vinegar if you are going to apply it to your face and avoid getting it in your eyes."

[YEA] 06/16/2011: Natalie from Brooklyn, Ny, Usa writes: "Thank you so much for this REALLY simple remedy that REALLY works! My head was itching a lot, but I use hairgel and hairspray every day, so I thought it might be that. But to rule out dandruff, I tried this method. I put equal amounts of apple cider vinegar and water in an empty hairspray bottle. I then shampooed my hair as usual and rinsed it. Then I sprayed (and poured) the mixture on my head and rubbed it in for about 4 minutes (careful not to get it in your eyes! ). Then I rinsed it out. Then I put in some Tea Tree oil conditioner I found at a nearby healthfood store, and rubbed that into my scalp. I let it sit for another 4 mins or so, then rinsed it out. I did this twice, about 2 days apart, and my head doesn't itch AT ALL anymore! and I still use my same hairgel and hairspray. What a wonderful cure! Thank you Earth Clinic for sharing it!"

Replies03/07/2010: Ken from Seoul, South Korea replies: "I am writing because i would like to try the apple cider vinegar approach for my seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp, but I am living temporarily in Seoul, Korea, and here they only have "brown rice vinegar". Can this be used as an adequate substitute for apple cider vinegar? Your help would be much appreciated."

07/12/2010: Haci from Sivas, Turkey replies: "Dear Susan. I think ACV does work, but you must use it at least 3 months and you should be patient."
[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 04/27/2011: Wendy from Ontario replies: "Perhaps the ACV works as a preventative, but Ted's other remedies perhaps have to be applied first to get rid of the dandruff? I use and have for years used ACV (raw with mother in, not pasteurized at the grocery store) full strength in a spritzer I keep in the shower. I only use shampoo about once a month but I do use a hypoallergenic scent free conditioner from the health food store as my hair is very long and curly. I spritz with the apple cider vinegar and always leave it in and on my scalp. Perhaps diluting it would be better? I do notice if I put too much in, then it gets 'heavy' and yes, almost greasy like or filmy and weighs down my curls ;-(I am going to try the Apple Cider Vinegar and hydrogen peroxide. Will post back! I have done tea tree oil neat (straight) on my scalp a bunch of times in the past and felt 'freaked' out, can't sleep, wicked headache etc. In my 'brain' area- too strong and too much absorbing into the brain? I haven't the nerve to do it quite like that again, so I will try diluting it. I have added it to our shampoos and stuff when I remember. My dandruff is not 'that bad' visually unless I put my head over a black cloth and scratch really good! LOL Mind you my scalp has been really itchy and burning lately- which could be food allergies but or mites/fungus etc. As spring as arrived... Right on cue! Thanks Ted for all your advice ;=)"

[SIDE EFFECTS] 12/06/2009: Jack from Knoxville, Tennessee writes: "I just stumbled upon this website the other day and after reading all the fantastic results ACV had when curing dandruff, I rushed out and grabbed a bottle. I started the treatment last night. I couldn't find a spray bottle, so I just poured a bit on my damp hair. I waited several minutes, then rinsed it out, then shampooed as usual. When I got out of the shower, my hair felt quite a bit cleaner, but once it dried it felt dirtier. Not greasy, really, but I dunno, like I could almost feel all the flakes when I touched my hair, and they started falling out way easier. I was a bit worried. Was this just another treatment that I would try and try and get no results? I held my ground and tried again tonight, except this time I used a spray bottle and diluted it with water. Same results. Are these results actually showing that my hair is improving getting rid of these annoying flakes? Is this how it is supposed to be?
Please help. I'm so sick of suffering from this. I've had it for a while now, but lately it's just been so much worse. About a year ago I had a tamer version of what I have got going on with my dandruff now, and I was able to get rid of it all by just using tea tree oil and t-gel shampoo. I tried this a couple months ago when I noticed problems again, but it only seemed to make things worse. I then tried nizoral, but that made things much, much worse. So, please, please help. I will be very grateful for any feedback. Thanks."
Replies12/07/2009: Diane from Berkeley, California replies: "I have found excellent results eliminating dandruff and improving health of hair by oiling my hair regularly using hair oil products from my Indian grocery store. Mostly this is coconut oil, with ayurvedic herbs such as amla and the like added. I have a particular brand I happen to like, but there are many different kinds - you have to see what's available where you are. There are some that are sesame or almond oil based, but I don't care for those as much. I guess you could use regular old coconut oil, but I think there is a huge benefit in the added herbs in the Indian products.
I oil my hair with a few Tbsp, leave it in a few hours and then wash out. Done regularly it really helps. I do it about once a week."
12/08/2009: Merryanne from Orange City, Florida, USA replies: "This is Merryanne in FL, I am not sure what the answer is, if you try something for several days, and you have no good results, then that is not the answer, so try some thing else,,sometimes a combination of items helps bring results,,why not put hydrogen peroxide on dry hair and wrap in a towel for 15 min then rinse with water, then rinse with acv, wrap again in towel and wait 10 min, then shampoo and no cream rinse,, wait an hour let hair dry in the air,,,check results,,,if no good may be try treating for fungus,,try iodine clear,,,keep searching,, Merryanne"

01/29/2010: Mr. B from Binghamton, Usa replies: "I'm not sure if all cases of S/D start out like mine, but I remember feeling something pimple-like on my head when I was in middle school or or 9th grade. I scratched it off and didn't think anything of it. It came back, I scratched it. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. When I gave myself the usual buzzcut a few weeks later I noticed the hair in that spot had grouped together and at the base of that grouping their was a red skin lesion. I, to this day, nearly 5 or 6 years later, haven't told either of my parents and if/when I cut my hair short where my scalp is visible (at this point, and for the last couple of years, there are many, many lesions on my head) I'll wear a hat until my hair grows out and covers up the red, flaky scales. I even had hair down to my shoulders at one point because I was so afraid of cutting my hair short like I like it.
I tried T/Gel shampoos or whatever they are called. Some with Salasylic acid (sp?) and others with coal tar. Neither helped much, if it all. I'm contemplating trying Selsun Blue and/or Head and Shoulders, but I'm guessing they won't help either. My case is pretty severe, though I've been too scared to ever see a doctor about it.
I came on this site, and others, and apparently ACV is helping lots of people. Though I'm confused, do you drink the ACV (which I have no probably doing...I drank a shot of malt vinegar no problem just for laughs one time) or do you apply to the spots on your head that are red from S/D? Also, those claiming ACV works...is it simply ridding your head of dandruff and flakes? Or does it alleviate the reddening too? I am more concerned with having a scalp that is 100% the color of my skin rather than some flaking (which I don't notice when I cut hair short, but I don't because my scalp has lots of red patches).
I'll be trying the 1 part ACV to 1 part water mixture tomorrow regardless of how it affects the redness part of my S/D.
Looking forward to a response...
Thank you."

[YEA] 10/21/2009: Maya2141 from Cambridge, Ma, Usa writes: "I have been suffering from Seborrhea for most of my adult life and used all possible medicated and non-medicated shampoos, nothing seemed to help. The only thing that worked was steriod creams and after I stopped them, it came back. I turned to the internet and found the ACV cure on EC. I have used it religiously for two weeks and its working.
I read another user's remark and got myself a color applicator from a beauty store and poured half ACV and half water. I apply it everyday after shampooing, rub it into the scalp and leave it for 2 to 5 minutes. It stinks like vinegar when the hair is wet, but once dry, no smell. There is none to minimal scaling and absolutely no itching in the hair. Since its only a couple of weeks, I am going it give it more time to completely rid the scaling. Note: I use an organic shampoo, with all natural ingredients and no sulfates. And since using ACV, I have skipped using the conditioner, the ACV leaves hair soft, shiny and detangled."

[YEA] 08/20/2009: Noele from Charleston, South Carolina writes: "I tried the apple cider vinegar for severe dandruff, and was shocked that it worked so well.
I've had terrible dandruff my entire life--I cannot think of a time when I didn't have severe itching and a dry, flaky scalp. I also had little plaques of flakes all over my scalp, and if I scratched them they bled. It was really irritating.
I had tried every single dandruff shampoo and treatment available, and nothing helped AT ALL. I was at my wits end. When I saw the ACV cure here on Earth Clinic, I figured I would try it. Couldn't hurt!
I went to a beauty supply store and bought an 8 ounce hair dye applicator bottle. I filled it with 4 ounces of ACV and 4 ounces of water and shook it to mix the two. Then, in the shower, I washed my hair with an olive oil soap [I had cut out using shampoo, figuring the sulfates were drying out my hair], rinsed, combed out the tangles, and then applied about 2 ounces of the ACV mixture to my hair and scalp. I left it on for a minute or so and then rinsed.
It worked! When I dried my hair, ALL the dandruff was gone. My head didn't itch at all, and my hair was also very soft and shiny. I have continued to use this method for the past month, and the dandruff has never returned.
This stuff is a godsend. I can't believe how well it worked, and it's so inexpensive. Thanks very much, Earth Clinic!"

The plaques were so bad lately I began to seriously think about shaving head. Truly, I was at my wits end.
I found this website and read about the ACV treatment. I happened to have had some in the cabinet that day (for treating my dogs for fleas) so I mixed some ACV 50/50 with water and applied it to the worst area, put a shower cap on and left it for 30-45 minutes. Then shampooed and conditioned as usual.
There was a marked difference after ONE treatment! I couldn't believe it! I have continued the treatment 2-3x per week for the last 3 weeks ( now with a spray bottle). My scalp is now almost completely clear! I expect to be completely cleared up within 30 days of starting treatment.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!! ACV works!

[SIDE EFFECTS] 08/08/2011: Courtney from Lewisville, Tx replies: "Hello Christine and everyone else, So I have a question.... I have had a bad scalp for so long and a Doc said it was SD like so many other stories on here. I have tried literally everything under the son from shampoos to liquids etc. After reading this site I went out and bought ACV and a bottle to use to pour on the scalp. I mixed half ACV and half water and also added 2 drops of Peppermint Oil that I read about it's benefits in another site for the scalp and hair growth. I got in the shower and applied the mixture which actually felt good on my scalp! As I was allowing it to soak in as directed, the fumes from the ACV began to almost choke me! I could not breath and began to cough a lot, I opened the bathroom door to get more ventilation which seemed to help. I wanted to see if anyone else had this problem? Also, after my hair dried my sclap seemed to be peeling off very badly like the condition worsened. I want to give it a shot and try again as that maybe my scalp needed another treatment. What do you guys think? Thanks, Courtney"
[NAY] 08/11/2011: Courtney from Lewisville, Tx replies: "Ok so I have been keeping up with my treatment of the ACV and water for my scalp, and although the mixture feels really good on my scalp.... My flakes and dandruff have increased a lot! Before the flakes would be somewhat visible but mostly just to me.... Now when I brush my hair my shirt/shoulders are covered! I think this is great for people that it works for, but I just don't think that I am one of those people. I do like how soft my hair is, but the flakes getting worse I just can't handle. I did a spin class at the gym today and when I began to sweat I smelled like vinegar :( Oh well, I guess I am on to another product."

I tried all the special medical shampoos like T Gel etc., I also tried a healthy dieting with low carbs, I tried ACV, I tried taking Neem, Garlic and nothing got rid of it...Then when I was 25 I decided to do a CRASH DIET to lose some weight fast! I read about Beyonce's Lemonade Diet, "The Master Cleanse" and I decided to do it for 11 days... After the cleanse, I did lose weight mostly water weight which I gained back about six months later. But the greatest thing about it was my Seb Dermatitis disappeared and hasn't returned as of yet... Master Cleanse is not the best weight loss method, but it definitely clears out some toxins that could be causing rashes... Hope this helps anyone!
One more thing, I recently noticed my hair very dry... I read that you are not supposed to shampoo everyday because the shampoo will dry your hair and your scalp. Well, I tried to shampoo every other day but my hair just looked to oily and gross. So I decided to put about a half cup of melted coconut oil in my shampoo bottle. It has helped alot making my hair less dry and frizzy and with it being mixed with the shampoo, it doesn't make your hair look oily. Another thing that helps with dry hair is Shampooing every other day and on alternate days, only using Conditioner to wash your hair. The conditioner has fragrance and will mask the smelly, oily scent of your hair. I know it sounds gross, but my hair looks better, feels softer and styles better when I don't overuse shampoo and when I add a little coconut oil..."

[YEA] 06/10/2009: Charlie from Boca, FL USA writes: "First and foremost thank you all for posting and for this site. I have Seborrheic Dermatitis on my face and scalp. It started as a red dry skin area around my nose and spread to under my eyes, chin, side burns, eye brows and when I did not shave anywhere there was hair. It has not spread to the rest of my body and thankfully just on my face.
It would get worse when I exercised, sweated or a temperature change from hot to cold weather wise. This caused me to stop exercising, which as a tri athlete was horrible. Sadly ordeal lasted roughly 6 years until I found Apple Cider vinegar. Before that I tried, dandruff shampoos, creams, acne solutions (proactive) and steroid based creams from my dermatologist.
The solution was simple and in my grocery store:
Apple cider vinegar in liquid form. I got the idea from this site and tried the recommendations.
1. Drink it mixed with water. That tasted badly so I decided to just do a shot of it. BAD IDEA. It almost killed myself and threw up for roughly 4 hours, side note it was a interesting way to reset and rid myself of all my stomach lining. DO NOT DRINK IT AS A SHOT.
2. I then tried the pills-no effect
SOLUTION:
Got the liquid. Take 3 piece of toilet paper and fold it in 3's just enough to make a strip where I can cover the top of the bottle and turn the acv bottle over making 4 circles so I can wipe my face with it. It stings but man does it work. No more pealing and my bad flare ups now are what I used to consider my good days. I did it once in the morning and once at night at first but now I forget to do it because I don't need to. I f I go more than about a week it will start up, but as soon as I do the acv"poof" all better. Sweating and exercising does start the process again but as long as I do it twice a day- I am good to go.
Please feel free to email me with questions at hawkcs@yahoo.com
I hope this helps and thank you all again for introducing me to acv."
07/02/2009: Connie from Columbus, Ohio replies: "I agree about taking ACV and the side effects it can have on your taste buds and stomach. But here is a tip a friend told me about... mix 4 ounces of warm water with one tablespoon of ACV and one tablespoon of honey mix well a drink in two quick swallows. This is still a little shock on your taste buds, have a full glass of cool fresh water ready. Drink this mixture three times a day. I must admit it took me about three weeks to get use to this but you do and the MANY health benifits of ACV and the honey are well worth it!!"
07/04/2009: Alicia from Madrid, Spain replies: "Hello! I've just started using ACV and I feel heartburn. Makes your body loose bone density? I'm right now starting my menopause and I'll appreciate your info. What do you think about ingesting H2O2? Thanks a lot. Alicia"
07/06/2009: kungfuchic from Thibodaux, LA replies: "I just wanted to relpy to Alicia from Madrid: ACV actually helps your bones to retain density. It has nutrients that bones need to keep strong and healthy."
07/14/2009: Alicia from Madrid, Spain replies: "This reply is for Kungfuchic from Thidobaux, LA. Thanks so much for your interest and hope everything is the best in your life."
09/20/2009: Eve from Concord, Nh replies: "I'm concerned by the question from Alicia from Madrid, Spain. She wondered about ingesting H2O2. I hope she has not done so. H2O2 is highly toxic when taken internally. It is a naturally occurring substance and is produced by many organisms to destroy other one-celled organisms. It damages cells and kills them. This is why it works for killing bacteria and fungi on the skin. Please Do Not take it internally!Eve"
09/29/2010: Ana from Philadelphia, Pa replies: "For those who said that taking a shot of Apple Cider Vinegar was too harsh - a simple remedy for that awful taste, I've found, is to mix it with a glass of orange juice. It just makes the OJ a bit tangy. I would, however, recommend brushing your teeth immediately afterward. The combined acidity of the ACV and the OJ could be pretty bad for your teeth. Realistically, it's probably a good idea to brush your teeth after consuming ACV in any manner."
03/08/2011: Coregon from Medford, Or replies: "To Ana from Philadelphia who said:"Realistically, it's probably a good idea to brush your teeth after consuming ACV in any manner."
Ana, you're correct and incorrect. Leaving the acid of orange juice and Apple Cider Vinegar on your teeth isn't good, but brushing your teeth while you have those acids on the teeth is hard on the enamel. Dentists recommend you rinse your mouth several times but don't brush teeth right after drinking acidic drinks.. wait until later."

[NAY] 05/11/2009: Rachel from Toronto, Ontario writes: "Please help! I am sure that apple cider vinegar actually made my scalp much worse and gave me horrible dandruff. I recently stopped using shampoo and instead tried cleaning with baking soda and rinsing with apple cider vinegar diluted with water. Dandruff worsened.
So I added tea tree oil and lavendar and still my scalp got worse. Also, I noticed my thick head of hair getting thinner because of hair loss.
I have stopped using baking soda and ACV - and now have to deal with a dry, itchy scalp. At least my hair has stopped falling out."
05/13/2009: Stacey from Greensboro, NC replies: "Hi. I've had a scalp problem for most of my life in which I would get these little pimples on my scalp that would itch horribly. The itching was getting so bad, it was keeping me up a night.
I've tried EVERYTHING, and only two things have ever worked. One was a gel that was actually a circulation stimulant to increase breast size. My logic (because I feel I should explain) was that most topical creams and gels for scalp circulation were oily, but this gel dried well on my scalp and stopped the itching. Unfortunately, this stuff is really expensive, and I honestly think the company stopped making it.
The only other solution that works is to use Head and Shoulders Extra moisturizing shampoo + conditioner. Use this everyday with no other hair product and it will MINIMIZE the problem, though not completely cure it. I've tried other dandruff products with no success. My hair still falls out, though not as bad, and I still get the occasional hormone related scalp flair-up. But, I really mean when I say, use no other product on your scalp or you will have the problem back.
When I have the occasional hormone realted breakout and itch, I apply baking soda directly to my scalp, and within 10 minutes, the itch is bearable enough to get through what I am doing and then take a shower.
I've not yet found a cure, but my life, or at least my sleep, has significantyl improved with doing this. I hope this helps."
05/13/2009: Jay from Greensboro, NC replies: "Stacey,Try adding 2tbls of sage and 2tbls of rosemary to 8oz of boiling h20. After it cools way down, use this as a final hair rinse. Let me know how it works. okay"
05/14/2009: Jennifer from Mesquite, Tx replies: "Have you thought about oil pulling for this problem...it has helped my skina nd hair in so many ways! I just think its worth trying. Hope you find the solution for this. Jennifer"
05/15/2009: Stacey from Greensboro, NC replies: "Hi Jay, I've tried a rosemary rinse before as well as rosemary oil with no success. I'll give the sage plus the rosemary a shot and let you know. Thanks for the recommendation!"
03/08/2011: Coregon from Medford, Or replies: "Although ACV is a great scalp tonic for dandruff or dry scalp, it doesn't seem to be effective for chronic scalp problems (scalp eruptions, etc. ) I believe that some of these severe chronic scalp problems evolve into bacterial infections from the constant scratching and need something stronger, and more soothing. Colloidal silver and MSM (sulfur.. As Ted recommends) work very effectively for scalp problems. Add a couple ounces of the silver and then put 4 capsules (1000 mg) in an 8 oz bottle of distilled water and use for final rinse. (leave in) You could additionally add these same ingredients to your sulfate free shampoo for faster results. It's also important to get a shower filter, chlorine and other impurities will keep the irritation going."

[QUESTION] 05/04/2009: Kenly from Dudley, NC writes: "Hi, I've been reading about the ACV treatment for dandruff. I'm really excited about trying it, but at the same time I have a bit of a concern. I have color-treated hair. I dye my hair rather frequently (well, as frequently as they recommend) and I don't want to waste money coloring my hair just to have what I'm doing for my dandruff condition stripping the color right back out. Is this safe for color treated hair?"
Replies05/04/2009: T from Maryland, USA replies: "Easiest way to find out: Snip a lock of hair from underneath in back and apply the ACV to it. Hang onto the lock and apply the ACV over days like you would on your whole head (including rinsing it out) if you really want to be sure."
05/06/2011: Rebecca from Salisbury, Nc replies: "I have color treated hair (due to gray) and use Apple Cider Vinegar every week to remove cigarette smoke smell cause I don't smoke but they do at the bar where I play pool. I have been doing this for about 4 months now and have not had any problems."
08/05/2011: Vinay from Sanfransisco, Ca replies: "This worked well for me:1. Use a shampoo which has ketocanazole 2%. 3 times a week. for 2 months
2. apply coconut oil mixed with amla everyday(you will get in indian stores)
3. Mix one cup of ACV and 5 spoons of honey and 30 ml of tea tree oil(all are powerful antifungal indegridents) in 1/3 gallon of water and apply to you hair every day for a month.
4. for oral take terbinafine tables 250mg(lamisil) for 15 days.
As preventive measure you could drink 3 spoons of Apple Cider Vinegar 3 spoons of honey mixed with water for an year.
Please note all natural herbs take 6 months to cure dandruff from roots."

08/30/2009: Spidey from Mumbai, India replies: "The hair fall after the use of ACV is completely natural and you do not need to dread it. Those are just those hairs which have been already loosened."
04/27/2011: Wendy from ..., Canada replies: "I just wanted to mention that I have used ACV for YEARS, at least 10... On me, the dogs, it was the only things I used on my 3 kids for the first 2 yrs of life and now as a rinse for them.. My oldest is 9. None of us have ever had any problems with hair falling out and I use it straight undiluted and lots of it. Now mind you I am not using the same brand as say the company who makes ketchup- I'm using raw unpasteurized stuff from the health food store, so perhaps that makes a difference?, although in a pinch I even used white vinegar for a time when and it seemed to be ok but it dried my hair out a bit ;-( Anyhow I put the raw apple cider vinegar in a spray bottle from the dollar store (like one you would use for household cleaner) and I spray it all over my scalp and then in the ends of my hair while I am in the shower so I can comb it through but then I leave it in. If I spray too much in it seems to get heavy around my scalp area or 'wet' looking like I have mousse or something in it LOL But the ends of my hair are super fluffy. I have wavy/curly hair and ALOT of it, it's at least 1/2 way down my back. I'm 42 and after stopping highlighting and bleaching my hair 11 yrs ago (after a lifetime of it) and switching to just the odd shampoo and using conditioner and then apple cider veingar every day in the shower, my hair looks and feels pretty amazing IMO ;-) ps hydrogen peroxide makes an excellent hair 'lightener' as does lemon juice in the summer- farrah fawcett did that for her highlights! LOL hth"

Over the last few months my scalp and face around the hairline went from a mild case of a few flakes to a very bad case of extreme flaking and scaling etc. I too had tried everything and was getting extremely disheartened thinking I was just going to be doomed to deal with this condition forever. Not only has it helped the skin condition but just like others said my hair looks and feels shinier and it has also cut down on the amount of static in my hair (I think the static was caused by the medicated shampoo I was using before that stripped my hair). I don't even care that I'm walking around smelling like a jar of pickles!"
Replies[YEA] 06/14/2009: Larryc from Buffalo, New York replies: "I have used apple cider vinegars for years-not faithfully but continue to fall back on its healing abilities. Not only do I use it on myself but on my 2 Saint Bernards-thats right. The ACV I use is ___ ACV which is 100% organic. It is a little more expensive but I feel that the strength of this surpasses the basic store bought acv.
I take mine with orange juice, it helps cut the bitterness of this acv and seems to be somewhat potent and expedient in its healing properties. It works on my 2 dogs due to the fact that it has helped greatly in the curing or reliefing of its so called allergies.
I have not had any dandruff or scallyness for as far back as I can remember which seems to be forever.Give it a try with orange juice.Good luck and stay healthy. Larryc"
06/18/2009: Janice from Coloma, Mi replies: "Hi Larry, I am curious as to how you give the vinegar to your dogs. Right now I am treating my dog with a systemic yeast problem. 05/18/2010: Kjustice from Corpus Christi, Tx replies: "Janice -I know it's been awhile since you asked about the way to give your dogs the ACV. I add a couple of drops to my yorkies water (She's only 7 lbs) Adjust according to the size to your dogs.I would not give more than 1 tsp. per day in their water bowl.
*****Side Note:******
I don't recommend giving them tap water.
Those water windmills are great, they filter out ALOT of chemicals. Another tip, I read that tap water isn't good for house plants, and what a difference when I started using the windmill water.
????WOW what is our city putting in our tap.????
***********Another side note:**********
If your dogs have allergies,
ACV is great for that, plus I add 2 drops of NEEM leaf oil. (also found at your health food store)
I hope this helps and you continue to use this website. I have been telling EVERYONE, even my Dr. about EarthClinic.com Very helpful. Thank you for all the wonderful information that your website provides.KJustice (and mommy's baby- The yorkie)"

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 02/10/2009: Amy from Tekonsha, Michigan writes: "I suffer from Seborrheic Dermatitis and it drives me nuts! I've always had a flaky scalp, but it got worse in college. To manage it, I use Neutragena T-Gel everyday, which kind of works. It usually causes the itching to subside for a day ... until I wash my hair the next morning.
I also suffer from rosacea on my cheeks. It recently started getting worse in the evenings. I'm getting married in August and definitely don't want to be dealing with it on the big day. Like I said, it really only flares up in the evening before I go to bed.
I came across EarthClinic for a cure for rosacea and decided to start drinking ACV everyday to see what happened. As of today (10 February 2009) I have been drinking 1 tablespoon ACV mixed with a cup of orange juice every morning for 17 days. I've only missed one day. Here's what I've noticed:
* The itching in my scalp has subsided, only a tiny itch every once in a while
* My scalp is flaking significantly less than before
* The rosacea on my face has gotten better ... but isn't completely cured
* My skin has an overall healthier look
I haven't noticed any adverse side effects from the ACV. I still use the T-Gel about two times a week for the seborrheic dermatitis just because."

I have a combination of Perioral Dermatitis, and Seborric Dermatitis, making my face a flaky and dry mess. The first 2 days were alright, it reduced the flakes density, and made it easier to pluck off... I'll tell you; it really stings. The third day or so i guess i may have used too much, but it made the area around my mouth soooo swolen that i couldn't even open it for 2 days. Its too soon to really tell if its working or not. But its not enjoyable right now. Im going to start taking ACV capsules and see if that works too. A friendly tip to you all, dont over do the ACV or you can end up with a swolen and iritated face which is not enjoyable at all."

When I was younger my mother would deep condition my scalp and hair and moisturize my scalp daily. When I was a teenager I did the same but have tried countless treatments and prescriptions and products since then. It has been frustrating trying to find a solution to my scalp condition while taking care of my hair. I am twenty 26 and tried using ACV 5% acidity in my hair 4 days ago and my scalp has made a 100% improvement!!!!! I put the ACV on my scalp and let it sit for 20 minutes and washed and styled as normal. Amazingly, my scalp is not white and itchy and my hair is not full of flakes. I haven't put anything on my scalp since the day I washed it."
Replies04/27/2009: Sishy from Kingston, Jamaica replies: "Savannah - do you relax your hair? I would like to try it but it would to good to know how ACV reacts with relaxer first."
04/29/2009: gd77 from Boston, MA replies: "Dandruff, ACV, and relaxing hair: I've used it in the past and my hair is relaxed. It worked pretty well. You may have to keep at it for couple of days to get rid of it. I would put it on my scalp w/ a dropper and massage it in. Then put a plastic cap and sleep with it on. In the morning wash it out or rinse. Blow dry or air dry. However, I would do this a least 3 days before you actual relaxer because washing irritates the scalp."
06/17/2011: Tami from Maple Hts, Ohio replies: "I am also African American with the same issue. I am willing to try anything. I wanted to get braids just so I can apply the ACV to my scalp directly. This is a horrible condition, but I hope the ACV will work. I am taking it to my hair styist tomorrow to give it a try."
09/03/2011: Sarah from Shamong, Nj replies: "I am have had Seborrheaic Dermatitis since I can remember. As a kid and teen, my parents took me to multiple doctors and dermatologists to treat the issue, but to no avail. When I entered college, I decided to lock my hair (I'm African American). By my junior year, I found SkinZinc, a spray and lotion to treat psoriasis. No, the stuff isn't completely organic, but the spray is 25% Zinc Pyrithione which knocks all the dandruff out.Since I wash and retwist my locks every 2-3 weeks, and I also keep a 5-day-a-week workout routine, I need something that's going to last. Though the apple-cider vinegar is a nice idea, I can't apply it without ruining my hairstyle. I'm certainly not going to wash and retwist my locks every week; I'd be pulling my brains out (not to mention damaging my hair). I swear by SkinZinc."

My dandruff has not improved and the skin on my forehead and back has begun to itch severely after I get out of the shower. Needless to stay, I have ceased using this treatment."
Replies[YEA] 10/28/2008: Victor from San Diego, Ca replies: "First of all, sugar cane "white" (clear) vinegar is better for topical use, as it does not make you stink after the shower. Use it full strength, do not mix it with anything. Just be careful not to get it into your eyes or on your teeth. I had dandruff and exema type problems on my scalp and face for decades, until I started using vinegar. I spray it and massage it 5 minutes before the shower, three times a week. It may take some time, but I am pretty sure you will succeed if you're persistant. For the first few days, you may do it every day, then every other day. I still have nightmares when I think about the times before I discovered vinegar: all the corticosteroids doctors had me use for years - they always gave me more side effects than relief..."

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 10/13/2008: Christine from clearwater, florida writes: "Please help! If you want to skip the entire story, please just scroll to the bottom 5 or so paragraphs. However, if you can help, please do read the whole story.
I think I have had something fungal going on with my body for some time. All throughout my pregnancy (5 years ago), I had a few yeast infections all handled with acidopholis. My son was born with "cradle cap". He is 4 and still has it (I think it's fungal = sebboreac dermatitis)
I currently have very bad dermatitis on my hands and face. It started about 3 years ago in between my fingers - lightly red and inflamed on a few fingers. Never having taken a drug in my life (including natural births), I saw a nutritionist.
He is one of the new who knows how to PROPERLY muscle test, and can test the supplement for your body and the correct dosage. He handled many problems for me (including major back spasms preventing me from operating at all). He handled liver cancer on my father, I've witnessed him handling autistic kids - I can sum it up to say for the most part he knows what he's doing!
On the hands, he found that it was a parasite. Throughout the last few years, he's also found a fungus as well. Most recently he found a virus in the liver (which makes sense as liver dysfunction can cause skin problems) I have drastically changed my diet and eliminated ALL sugar over the past 3 months. I went strictly organic 3 years ago.
Despite doing his protocol, it would ebb and flow - each outbreak steadily getting worse and spreading onto my knuckles and front of hands.
After a year the redness then changed to red and small little pustules. (little clear "puss pockets" on my fingers and eventually moving into the palms of my hands). I am super hygienic - wash my hands about 8 times a day with mild natural hand soap - doesn't make sense.
Frustrated, I went and got topical fungal cream. It vanished after a few days - only to come back when I went off the cream.
Last year I had it licked for several months when I went onto NO sugar (no bread, legumes, honey, juice, etc.)... Then it came back after about 3 months.
Now three years later I've had all of my body products tested on me - I use 100% natural soap, shampoos, toothpaste, makeup, etc. I clean my house only with vinegar and peroxide. I eat like a hippie - it doesn't make sense!
3 months ago I went to a "natural spring" in Florida, The next day my entire tummy was broken out in hives. It spread up my chest, onto the neck and on the hands.
I decided to skip the nutritionist as I'd been struggling for three years. I went to a dermatologist who told me it was an allergy to whole food supplements! I didn't buy this, but decided to take the steroid and antihistamine.
I took both twice. I felt terrible and the condition got worse! I went back and the Doctor the next day who then told me to keep it up for two weeks as it could take that long !!!!!
Regretting taking the drugs I went to my nutritionist who handled it within a day - EXCEPT the hands (my struggle).
I then started soaking my hands in salt water. I'd do this about an hour a day. This would clear them up and instantly take away the itch (didn't hurt surprisingly) and chilled them out.
At the end of September it was my son's 4th birthday. I cheated on my no sugar and had a piece of cake (not all natural, organic and sugar free).
The next morning I wooke up and it broke out on my face!!!!!! Within a day of the breakout my chin was orange from the oozing. YUK. I can't go to work looking like this... I work in the financial industry!
I went to my nutritionist who couldn't handle it.
My hands were also worse than before - I could NOT stop from itching. I bought cortisone cream, tar, psoriasis cream, etc. and loaded it all on my hands. NOTHING stopped this terrible itch. The knuckles looked like I got into a fist fight and were bleeding and swollen. My fingers almost twice their size. The salt water was also not helping.
By the way, each breakout has been worse than previous - especially since these terrible drugs! I researched the drugs (prednisone, xyzol and another topical steroid) Turns out a side effect of these medical drugs is breaking out WORSE than before once you're off the drug!!!
The nutrition was ALSO not working and now I had an orange chin and bloody knuckles.
I finally broke down and went back to the MD again (I saw a different one). He said it was a staph infection (hands) and impetigo (face). I could think with this. I took the anti-biotic which totally cleared the skin. This made sense to me - nutrition not working with such a massive infection misdiagnosed for months.
I thought an anti-biotic is OK - I've never had a side effect from the 3-4 times I've taken them (no condition I've had ever came back).
Now I've been off a week. Within a day I could feel the skin heating up under the lips. The itch started the next day, along with chin getting red and the lips also have little bumps around the base. I also have white heads around my nose, which is slightly red.
I spoke to the MD, who wants to put me on more drugs. I truly don't think this is a solution - seeing the "side effects"!!!!
I took a BUNCH of oregano oil (3 days ago). The condition has continued to worsen.
Remember, I drink more than 1/2 my body weight in spring water a day and I ONLY eat organic veggies and chicken (I even clean and steam veggies in bottled spring water). No sugar of any kind (bread, fruit, refined, dairy, etc.) I don't even put dressing on my salad. The ONLY stray from this is one cup of coffee per day. This is definitely not some allergy from a crap diet or chemicals in my environment.
I found this site - T H A N K Y O U!!! I've been taking apple cider vinegar internally and externally since yesterday. The chin is definitely drying up but still quite red. It started bleeding today (I think it was so dry, that when I moved my mouth, it cracked a scab)
HOWEVER, the hands don't seem to be changing. The knuckles are redder today (with white flaky skin on top - I assume this is eczema) and continuing to get chubbier and spreading.
I've also been drinking water with 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda with lemon juice and two teaspoons of ACV. I've put the ACV on my face and hands three times a day.
The redness is not yet going away on the face, but it's crusting up (yuk - sorry if this is gross).
Last night I put yogurt on my face and hands (the thick Greek yogurt) and taken a bunch of acidopholis. The yogurt seems to draw some of the gunk out as a "white head" formed after I rinsed it off.
I considered the oil gargle - but am worried I'll detox too fast and the skin will get worse than it is now.
I am going to start with coconut oil tonight and see if that helps on the hands.
I need to know from other people out there - does it sound like I'm improving?? Anyone else go through these symptoms before (or as part of) healing??? My main concern is whether or not I am healing.
Any suggestions? Please help! I am 29 and refuse to let this spread on my body! I plan on it being gone :)
Thank you so much,
Christine

I broke out in a horrible itchy red rash with bloody bumpy blisters. Of course I had removed the ring immediately when the itching began (who wouldn't?) but instead of disappearing as it had in the past, this time it just kept getting worse and worse and my finger swelled up so badly I could not close my hand. I tried some aloe vera which was soothing but didn't seem to do much else. Finally in desperation I bought something called tea tree oil which i had heard was a good remedy for burns and other irritations. Whaddya know---my rash started clearing up immediately---the skin dried out quite a bit but I relieved that with ordinary cortisone cream. The infection and swelling went away in a few days. The stuff is not exactly cheap ($12.50) but not that expensive considering the rapid result."

I typically take about 1/4 cup of Apple Cider Vinegar and 1/4 cup of water and mix it in a spray bottle (1 part to 1 part). I spray it directly on my scalp, by combing through the different sections. Then leave it on for at least 10-15 minutes. Then I rinse it out and use a mild shampoo & conditioner. The longer the better. Its best to do it on the weekends or at night because it does smell. (2-3 times a week) The worse you have it the longer it will take to see results. I started using the ACV because the Nizoral shampoo started making my hair really dry and brittle and it started to break and fall out. I have pretty oily skin and I needed to wash my hair every day. For the face, take a cotton ball and dab the mixture on the spots. And make sure you dry your hair good, the moisture breeds bacteria."
