09/12/2011: John1230 from Delhi, India: "Hi All,
My Father (70 years old - from INDIA) is suffering form psoriasis since last 15 years. This has now spread all over his body. He tried everything from Allopathic, Homeopatich to Ayurvedic and now is afraid of trying anything else.
Any suggestions on tried home remedies are desperately welcome. Thanks all for this wonderful website and info."
Replies09/13/2011: Jen from Bozeman, Mt, Us replies: "I have had psoriasis since I was a toddler. It was such a struggle when I was a child since doctor's had no idea how to treat it back then. I finally got permanant relief from an awesome dermatologist. I told her that I always got better in the sunlight. She knew exactly what would help me then. She gave me a perscription of straight vit D ointment. I applied it to each of my psoriosis spots dailey for about 2 to 3 weeks and they have never returned since. That was 9 years ago. I don't know if I was just really vit D deficient or what. I do live in Montana so it's possible. I think you could take some vit D capsules and mix them with lanolin or something very hypoallergenic and rub this mixture on your fathers psoriasis. The cream I bought was really expensive. If I ever have another break out I will make my own cream."
09/13/2011: Lilsadone from Dallas, Tx, Us replies: "Here's what I've done - I've had it my entire life (30 years) and it pops up in new places and the severity changes often, UNTIL I started making the following changes to my diet and lifestyle.. Here's what I found made my flare ups worse and what has worked for ME.Meat & dairy aggravates it. If I stick to a vegan diet -i have less psoriasis problems and any patches I might have start to clear up. When I start pigging out on non-organic meats and fast foods - I notice a change in my skin quickly. So when I start eating too much fast food (or bad-for-you-food in general) it shows in my skin in a couple weeks. Vegan is best for me, but if I'm not eating vegan I try to stick to organic as much as possible.
For scalp psoriasis, (mine flared up the worst I ever had in my life. It got to the point where it was oozing from the skin scaling). I started taking GSE (grapefruit seed extract) to make sure I didn't have any yeast build up and to make sure to kill any infection if there was one- and I cut out sugars temporarily (which feeds yeast). I put GSE in and on everything. I put GSE drops in my water (3x day), in my shampoo and conditioners, plus I used a shampoo called psoriatrax which has the highest amount of coal tar you can find - it's pricey but it's WORKS better for ME than Tgel or the other psoriasis shampoos you can get. I also put GSE drops into all my body lotions and creams - I basically wanted to make sure I got it on my skin as often as possible - during my daily routine. (this way it didn't feel like a chore). The amounts are on the bottle. I took just under the maximum recommended amount I could internally daily.
Also for full body psoriasis and eczema (I had it on my scalp, in my ears, armpits, groin as well as patches on my body) all of that went away when I did the above items AND started taking 5,000 vitamin D3 a day (I work from home so I don't get a lot of natural sunlight), plus a good quality multivitamin and some type of omega 3 as well. My omega 3 is flaxseed based because I would get those fish burps even if I took the pills frozen.
It took some time, but over a period of 8 months now since it was that bad (i had a flare up from the stress of moving to a different state and that's how long I've been here) adding all the things in that I mentioned above ---- I only have one small patch on my scalp left, and I had it like I said, on my scalp, groin, armpits, ears, and patches over the rest of my body. I was even getting patches on my face - and that had never happened to me before! My ears were so bad they would fill with fluid and half the day I couldn't hear - but I mixed in a VERY small amount of gse with an ear cleaning solution every so often and they cleared up - no problems with them now.
Also, the lotions I used were Eucerin calming creme and pure shea butter only - anything else irritated my skin and would make things worse. Whenever I get a new bottle of body wash (dove or Dr. bronners) or lotions or shampoos, I put my GSE drops in there right away - so I don't have to worry about it.
My flare up started right before my move and like I said, been here for 8 months . The only things I do now (since it's not flared up right now) is take my daily supplements of the multi, omega3 and vitamin D. I also sometimes take turmeric, garlic and cayenne for inflammation (I use the computer a lot) so I don't know if that also plays a role in my psoriasis or not. But I only take the GSE INTERNALLY now randomly, because it's done it's job and I only use the coal tar shampoos when I have a flare up - you shouldn't use that coal tar stuff all the time.
So to sum it up:
GSE drops internally to kill off yeast which makes psoriasis worse
Cut back on sugars and breads - which feed the yeast
Cut back on meats & dairy (if you think that causes flare ups for him)
GSE drops externally in the creams/lotions/body washes (if there is any cracking or broken skin it keeps it from getting infections from scratching)
Eucerin Calming Creme - really keeps things moisterized which helps with any cracking or broken skin that may develop
Vitamin D3 (At the most I used 10, 000 daily, but my regular is 5, 000 because I work from home and don't get a lot of natural sunlight - so you'll need to figure out what works for him)
Omega 3
Multivitamin "

12/03/2010: Brendan from Adelaide, South Australia: "Im just wondering if anyone can shed some light, I have psoriasis or some skin condition on my face, posibly seborheic dermatitis or some sort of infection, god only knows but my derm says its psoriasis. However anything he says id take with a pinch of salt coz he actually said to me "It doesn't matter if its psoriasis or sebhorraic dermatitis, they are treated in the same way" meaning with elidel cream. I know this to be wrong as they are totally different conditions.
Anyway I was wondering if anyone could tell me why it is that my condition is made worse by sleeping at night. It is steady throughout the day and often calms down but every morning I wake up, and its more inflamed and sometimes has spread over more of my face. Also I sometimes get a feeling like I have tiny things crawling on my skin or in my hair, though this could be in my head. There has to be a reason for these things. Any ideas would be appreciated. Also thanks to those who made suggestions on my other posts, I have not tried them yet as I just fear that they will make it even worse. My face is stinging enough as it is and sometimes I get itches that are nearly unbearable. Thanks to earthclinic and I pray that everyone on here finds their way to fixing their problems. Don't give up, life is to precious."
Replies12/04/2010: Catherine from Wellington, New Zealand replies: "What you are describing certainly sounds like dermodetic mites.. Ted has a bit to say about this condition. I'm wondering about the increase of symptoms in the morning.. Could it be you are reinfecting yourself with your pillow? I can't really comment on that but a new pillow and a clean pillowcase each night is worth trying. Best of luck with it."

SEA SALT

[YEA] 05/08/2011: Brad Shad from N.providence, Rhode Island: "I started using himalayan sea salts for my psoriasis as directed by a friend. One teaspoon in the morning in 8-16 oz. of clean water on empty stomach and the same thing at night. You get one of the sea salt rocks and you add triple the water to it to make what they call a sole. Then let it sit for 24 hours and it is ready to use. Then use a hard plastic teaspoon to scoop the mix into a glass of water. Mix and drink. Note, make the sole in a glass not plastic and when scooping mix into glass dont use a metal spoon. I was told it will change the chemical component of the sole. So my psoriasis is getting better and the added benefit is I go to the bathroom every morning like clockwork. Sea salts are very healthy and do not raise blood pressure providing you are eating a healthy alkaline diet (vegetables etc.. ). good luck."

SELENIUM

[YEA] 03/27/2009: Rich from Boca Raton, Fl: "Selenium and Psoriasis:
Selenium deficiency is pretty common in dandruff, psoriasis, eczema, tinea (age spots), athletes foot, jock itch, seborrheic dermatitis, candida infections, hypothyroidism.
There are different yeasts, of course, trichophyton, mallasezia furfur, candida and others. Some spots may itch, others may not. I suspect rosacea may be a yeast problem as well (combined with Demodex mites eating the yeast).
Yeast needs oxygen, and Selenium is a very powerful antioxidant (500x stronger than vitamin e). Kill the oxygen supply, with Selenium, and you kill the yeast.
A good source of Selenium is brazil nuts(orally), or Dandruff Shampoo(topically). Selenium works with iodine (and is thyroid protective). Taking one alone, though could cause a deficiency of the other, theoretically.

How to treat Malassezia furfur (tinea versicolor) in humans?

Malassezia furfur, a lipophilic, dimorphic and yeast-like fungus, occurring in human skin as an opportunistic pathogen, causes diseases such as dandruff, pityriasis versicolar, seborrheic dermatitis, etc. Suitable media for culturing the organism were standardized. A modified medium for the culturing of M. furfur has been proposed. Growth of the fungus was also determined in the presence of different carbon sources under the influence of different temperature, pH and salinity. Plant extracts of 19 species were screened against the growth of the fungus by using disc diffusion method and the results are discussed."

SULFER 8 AND ZORIASIS
Ratings:

[YEA] 09/11/2008: Lynne from Dayton, Ohio: "I have been suffering with psoriasis for twenty years. I was mainly affected on my scalp and had constant flaking. Several years ago, I began to get small patches on my body. One day a lady noticed the flakes on my shoulder and recommended a product called Sulfer 8. This is usually found in the African American hair care section in major supermarkets. I found that it did work pretty well but when I mixed a product called Zoriasis in with it, the results were amazing. The small spots disappeared in several months and the redness and flaking on my scalp has diminished greatly! I am so happy. My scalp doesn't itch like it used to. The Sulpher 8 does have a menthol smell but it feels really good. The Zoriasis product can be found online. I just mix about one teaspoon of Zoriasis into the four ounce jar of Sulpher 8 and this will last for months. I just had to share this and I hope it brings psoriasis sufferers the same relief it gives me! Good luck!"

SUNSHINE
Ratings:
|
[YEA] 07/01/2008: K.A. from New Jersey, USA: "Ailment: Psoriasis.
Remedy: Throw away your sunblock and take a walk in the sun!
The insides of my ears have itched like crazy since I was about 16, though I never knew it was psoriasis until almost a decade later. I just recently figured out that that was the age when I started to avoid direct sunlight and also wear sunblock constantly to prevent future wrinkles on my very fair skin--a practice I continued up until this year.
Avoiding the sun and living in an area with a far angle from the sun during winter months causes Vitamin D deficiency, which I am certain I had. Getting more sunlight by exercising outside in the morning has helped tremendously. Vitamin D apparently decreases cell turnover, including in the skin.
Avoiding a pro-inflammatory lifestyle and stress should also help, since autoimmune disorders such as psoriasis are modulated by inflammatory cytokines; in the case of psoriasis, interleukin-17 seems to be the problem."

TANNING
Ratings:

[YEA] 05/30/2011: Melinda from Schertz, Tx Usa: "I've had guttate/plaque Psoriasis since I was 16, and I fear that now I may be developing inverse Psoriasis. Now I'm 25 and have been without health insurance since I was 21, so needless to say I've had to be pretty creative with my treatment. For the first 5 years I used a clobetasol propionate steroid oinment, which worked well until I became steroid dependant. I've developed secondary skin infections from overnight flare ups, and it seems like any tiny change in the environment or in my body will trigger it.
I find that tanning is the fastest way to treat it but if you don't get rid of it fast enough then you just get way to dark! I read that things like celery, oranges, and flaxseed contain something called Psoralen with helps your body process UV rays more effectively. Even if you don't tan indoors but you live somewhere like South Texas (where we also have the possibly worst allergens), I learned that eating 4-5 sticks of celery or drinking a single serving of pure OJ before sun exposure really does wonder. So much so, that you can even feel a tingly sensation inside your skin when it's working. Cool, right? I actually got on here to find other remedies, since I'm having a severe flareup at the moment. But as I was thinking about how well that used to work, I got excited and wanted to tell you all about it! A little carried away, maybe...."

TANNING BEDS
Ratings:
|
[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 09/17/2009: Elle from Columbus, Oh: "Sun and tanning bed use at tanning salon. All exposed areas of psoriasis cleared completely with treatment, with visible results apparent immediately. Psoriasis returns in other areas after stopping treatment, but when resumed continues to clear. The dry buildup of flakes and scale first leaves you with smooth red patches which fade in color, leaving me with a dark patch of normal skin. The dark patch completely fades as well, and the skin is left as if it were never afflicted."

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32187497/ns/health-cancer/
Associated Press
Wed., July 29, 2009LONDON - International cancer experts have moved tanning beds and other sources of ultraviolet radiation into the top cancer risk category, deeming them as deadly as arsenic and mustard gas.
For years, scientists have described tanning beds and ultraviolet radiation as "probable carcinogens."
A new analysis of about 20 studies concludes the risk of skin cancer jumps by 75 percent when people start using tanning beds before age 30. Experts also found that all types of ultraviolet radiation caused worrying mutations in mice, proof the radiation is carcinogenic. Previously, only one type of ultraviolet radiation was thought to be lethal.
09/17/2009: Kathy from Dubois, Pa replies: "I am very skeptical of this "tanning beds are dangerous" thing. More and more evidence is coming out that light is a kind of nutrient, and that Vitamin D-3 the "sunshine vitamin" (actually a hormone) prevents and cures a whole host of diseases, and that humans have a process similar to photosynthesis in plants. Plus, humankind evolved to live in the sun, so it just doesn't make sense to me that sunlight is the CAUSE of skin cancer. It makes more sense to cast an eye at modern cosmetics and food additives, along with nutrient (especially pigment-type nutrients like beta-carotein, etc) deficient diets, REACTING WITH sunlight to cause skin cancer. I know that when I use commercial skin or body washes, the scent lingers for literally hours afterward. That must mean that the scent is penetrating my skin and/or bonding with my skin chemistry in some way. I don't know about any of you guys, but I think that cannot be a good thing. And those scents, flavors and colors are also hormone mimics and are based on the technology of solvents. And that's not to mention all the "preservatives", transfats, pesticides, herbicides, etc. that our so-called "food" is loaded with. Jeez, its a wonder anybody is alive at all. And then they blame the tanning booths or the sun."

TED'S REMEDY READER FEEDBACK

[QUESTION] Wayne from Exeter, Devon, Uk : "Hi, I have suffered scalp psoriasis on and off for numerous years. Sometimes I find a shampoo that will clear it but the scalp appears to become accustomed to it after a while and it is no longer as effective. Recently, after washing my hair I noticed a strong ammonia smell from my scalp which eventually subsides. I would like to try Ted's lotion recipe of 5% Milk of magnesia, 10-15% Ammonium Chloride & 5% Xylitol. Is this solution made in water or an unscented shampoo? Will let you know how I get on."

TOPICAL D-3

[YEA] 05/06/2011: Amanda from Wonewoc, Wisconsin, Usa: "I have had Psoriasis since I was 8-9 years old. I am 28 now. My mom read in a Vitamin D book about using Vitamin D3 Gelcaps, prick them open and spread the oil onto the Psoriasis.
Well, I tried it. This is my 5th dose or so, and it has really taken the Psoriasis down, there are patches of more normal looking skin inside the Psoriasis! IT took away almost all the scales so its almost smooth skin now. It used to be bleeding, scaling, and really gross.
I used Vitamin D3 gelcap 2000 IU once daily!!
This could help tons of people and be an alternative to Steriod Creams!"

VINEGAR AND OLIVE OIL
Ratings:

[YEA] 05/09/2007: Tom from Sunnyvale, CA: "vinegar and olive oil Ailment: psoriasis
When I was in elementary school, I had psoriasis on my elbows and knees, and all over the side of my face! It got behind my ears so bad I used to dream that my ears were falling off.
None of the doctor's remedies helped. Then my parents found this old home-remedy book from around the 1700s. It had what I call the salad dressing cure.
You soak the affected skin with vinegar for a few minutes, then you cover it with warmed olive oil (make sure it isn't too hot).
It got so I hated vinegar for years because of the smell (I think Apple Cider Vinegar would have been much more bearable), but it worked! The psoriasis went completely away, and I no longer felt like a freak at school.
Every few years I'll get a tiny patch on my knee or elbow. If it bothers me I'll use the treatment and it will go away."

VITAMIN D

[YEA] 03/10/2012: Skyesmom from Memphis, Tn: "I had bloodwork done and was very deficient in Vitamin D. I have suffered from mild psoriasis for about 10 years. I recently had a small patch come up on my elbow. I have been taking liquid Vitamin D-3 bought at GNC for a few weeks and the psoriasis is gone. I take one dropper full a day under the tongue and let it absorb in."

[YEA] 02/07/2009: Chuck from Atlanta, GA: "For about 20 years, I had a chronic patch of psoriasis over my left eyebrow. I had tried several prescription and OTC creams, but none of them worked. After reading an article about how thousands of people got relief from psoriasis by sunbathing in the Dead Sea area, I remembered how my own psoriasis would practically disappear during the summer months when I sunbathed regularly. That was when I made the connection between sunshine and vitamin D. So, I started taking a daily supplement of 1000iu of vitamin D, which was in addition to the 400iu in my daily multivitamin. In about a week, I was amazed to see the patch of psoriasis had completely disappeared and has never returned. It may not work for everyone, but it sure worked for me!"

This greatly reduced my symptoms and i have very few small spots left. This does take serveral months."

[YEA] 06/09/2009: Sunsong from Mission, Canada: "I would like to share with you my cure for Psoriasis. I had never had psoriasis until a few years ago when it broke out on the back of my scalp and quite severely on my left hand area inside the thumb and the palm of the hand. Anyone who has had psoriasis knows this is an extremely bad place to havce it!! I am also left handed so it became difficult to even write with a pen or do basic tasks.
I believe in natural medicines and it became an almost two year long journey to find the natural cure (for myself) and I'm hoping and praying it will work for others as well. I tried different natural topical treatments to no avail. And in a moment of clarity, realized that skin eruptions happen because of an imbalance 'within' the body.
First of all, i must stress that i was diligent about having my Vitamin D levels tested by my physician. I followed Dr. Mercolas advice on getting the correct vitamin D test and getting myself within the optimum range for good health. This took a few months. During that time i used a homemade cream with vitamin D drops on my hand. This helped, but did not cure the problem.
What truly made the difference was when i added in a very high quality omega 3 fish oil supplement. I vary between the capsules and the liquid high quality grade. Also, I use the recommended dose of 2 capsules daily or 1 tsp. liquid daily. If i take more than the recommended dose i feel imbalanced. Needless to say, one has to experiment with the correct dose as each person is unique biochemically.
The improvement in the psoriasis was startling. Within two months it was 98% gone, and it looks like it is never coming back. Since psorisis is a skin inflammation, and Vit D and omega fish oils are powerful anti-inflammatories, one can see why the remedy worked. I had used fish oils (omegas 3's) in the past, but had lapsed in taking them (stressful time in my life). I can see now how very important these two simple things are.
Also, I had a cat with a very serious allergy and skin problem. I started putting the Vit D drops (very tiny amounts) and fish oil in his food, and he cleared up almost completely. His condition was so serious that he would lose his hair and have bleeding crusty patches all over his body. Also, his nose would plug up so much he couldn't breathe. Now he is all clear and his dandruff is gone, he can breathe, and his fur feels like absolute SILK. All this with no pharma medicines.
So i gave it to my 3 elderly dogs....two german shepherds and a wolf hound. Huge improvement in their arthritis symptoms! Also, their fur and skin feel like absolute SILK.
Regarding the psoriasis and skin: i must mention that i use all natural soaps, dish soap and skin lotions. I also have a chemical free home (clean with baking soda, vinegar, and essential oils) Also, i wash my animals in a solution of borax and rinse them in clear water thoroughly. No chemical soaps or junk on their bodies!
I recently started adding a little Apple Cider Vinegar (the good organic kind with the mother in it) to my pets food. I only use tiny amounts, but they all seem to like it. I am trying this to see if it helps repel fleas, as I heard from elsewhere on Earth Clinic that his helps. We don't have a flea problem at all, but i'm hoping the ACV will keep it that way. (I also put garlic in their bone broth that they get).
I must mention again: the ACV i've been taking for a week dropped my blood pressure. I don't know if it has helped me lose weight because i don't use a scale. But i feel less bloated and more mentally perky. As with all things, i believe in consistency and in not overdoing. I only use the Earth Clinic recommendation of 2 tsp in 16 oz. water drank throughout the day. On some days i have ane extra glass because my body/mind is asking for it. I can hardly wait to see my doctor and give her the news that i lowered my blood pressure with such a simple thing.
May mother earth bless everyone who contributes their cures to this site!"

07/01/2009: 4Yahshua from Fountain Valley, CA replies: "Sunsong, just to let you know. You do not need to see fleas to have a problem. We learned this the hard way with "Pretty" the young calico kitty that came to our home late last year. She stayed mostly in our garage and was doing very well with the good diet we gave her, including a garlic capsule (to help control fleas) and a lecithin capsule daily. After awhile we noticed a small bump on the back of her neck, that was all. However, during this past month she started to have more bumps there and they looked like sores, raw and open. We took her in to see what was wrong. Then we learned that she was infected by the fleas. (They said that they are a real big problem here.) If you feel any bumps under the fur (especially at the back of the neck or under the chin), please start flea control immediately. Eventually, they can kill your beloved pet!"

I got up this am and to my surprise I peeled the glue off my elbow and it was smooth as silk. Washed my hair (a couple of times:() and most of the scales were gone. I probably missed places. ZINC
09/14/2008: Stephanie from Chicago, IL: "From: http://www.doctoryourself.com/psoriasis.html
ZINC SUPPLEMENTATION
Your skin contains one fifth of your body's zinc supply. Rats and mice that are deficient in zinc develop a skin condition called keratogenesis that is very similar to human psoriasis (Hoffer and Walker, Orthomolecular Nutrition, p 156-157). Zinc deficiency in humans is the rule, not the exception. The US RDA for zinc is only 15 milligrams a day, and yet the average American takes in even less than that. (Williams, Nutrition and Diet Therapy, 7th ed., page 253) In spite of this, it is most uncommon to find either dietitians or doctors ever recommending a supplement of this mineral.
Research has shown that supplements of zinc are safe up to about 500 mg. daily. A more sensible daily dose of 50 mg to perhaps may be maintained for as long as is desired. A good multiple vitamin along with this will provide some balancing copper, as will (believe it or not) the copper water pipes in your home.
The "amino acid chelated" form of zinc ('chelated zinc') is better tolerated and better absorbed than zinc sulfate or other inorganic forms of the mineral."
