Natural Treatment for Herniated Disc

Last Modified on Jan 22, 2014

What is a Herniated Disc?
An intervertebral disc is the cushion between the vertebrae or bones of your back that make up your spine; it has a tough exterior and a soft interior. Also known as a slipped or ruptured disc, a herniated disc occurs when the soft "jelly" of the interior of the disc is pushed out through a crack in the exterior, which can cause back pain.

Sometimes symptoms of herniated disc do not show themselves and are only known through spinal imaging. But depending on where in the spine the herniated disc is, the symptoms will be different. A herniated disc in the lower back will cause pain in the leg and buttocks, while in the neck or upper back a herniated disc can cause shooting pain through the arm and hand. Other symptoms of herniated discs are numbness, tingling, and weakness in the affected nerves.

Natural Cures for Symptoms of Herniated Disc

This page is for Earth Clinic readers to submit and discuss herniated disc treatment. For herniated discs, recovery is mostly a question of getting proper exercise and rest, but sometimes we do not get better on our own and need a little help. Please let us know your stories of recovering from herniated discs.

[YEA]  01/22/2014: Trikke from Belgium: "I had a torn disc 6 weeks ago and everybody wanted me to take strong anti-inflammatories and heavy painkillers. I went for the painkillers for about a week, just to get some sleep and rest, but replaced the anti-inflammatory medication with heavy dosages of curcuma, combined with a bit of black pepper (it enhances the biodisponibility of the curcuma times 20). On ebay, you can find a little device that allows you to fill/make your own curcuma capsule pills for nearly nothing).

For a week, I slept at night with a warming pack which was bliss.

Lots of rest and lying down at first, putting legs at a 90? angle f.i. lying on the floor, thighs up and calves on the seat of a chair, bed or sofa. It apparently helps rehydrate de disc. Minimum 10 minutes a day.

I also started about two weeks later, to very gently sit in the yoga "child pose", which is like a foetal position (you can also do it on your back, pulling in your legs over your stomach) and very consciously breath about 10 times into your lower back by litteraly "bringing" the oxygen there - expand your lower back rather then your lungs or stomach with air (it oxygenates the cells and helps the area heal).

I was also wearing a back-brace in the beginning, but beware not to keep wearing it too often afterwords as it weakens the belly and back muscles, which is the opposite of what you want.

I am now almost completely recovered, but have started an intense training program to muscle and tone my belly and lower back muscles.

Apparently, there might also be a link between lower back pain/injury and a problem in the gut (leaky gut, candida, etc)."

[YEA]  07/18/2012: David from Baja California Sur, Mexico: "I use DMSO to relieve some of the painful symptoms of a herniated # 4 lumbar disc. My best guess is DMSO works because not only does the nerve bundle cause pain, but the pain causes adjacent muscles to tense up and spasm. Believe it or not, I am convinced the knotted muscles feed back pain to the nerve, aggravating it even more. No, I'm afraid DMSO is not the all enveloping miracle cure for a herniated disc agony. But it does temporarily relieve a significant amount of pain - and I do not have to swallow even more medicine to do it. Call me "convinced"."

General Feedback

11/05/2013: Ringgo from Jakarta, Indonesia: "As far as I know, There are NO herbal or medicine could cure a herniated or slipped disc. Only a NeuroTransmitter device such as Denas or Scenar will fix the slipped disc in a few minute. But the price expensive. Try to find a nerophaty in your area who has these device. GBU"

The topic is spread around multiple topics."

07/10/2013: Prioris from Fort Pierce, Fl, Usa: "The below is information I found that hasn't really been talked about much on internet. I'm only taking Collagen Type 2 which also has small molecule Hyaluronic Acid (HA) and chondroitin. I plan on adding Collagen Type 1 and 3. The HA has done wonders for my herniated disc in 6 weeks. I am working on my hip degeration. I wonder what adding Type 1 and 3 will do for my body.

Double dose for 6 – 12 weeks to make up for collagen deficiency, then maintain at recommended dose daily.

Take away from food – especially protein. If taken with protein the body doesn't recognise it as collagen (? hour before food and 2 hours after).

Do not take type I and 3 collagen at the same time as type 2 collagen – they have different amino acid profiles and if taken together the proteins bind and form a complete protein which means the body doesn't recognise it as collagen anymore.

Not taking with food has been discussed but not how to take it with the other type of collagen. Also I did run across double dosing but not that much. I have been double dosing with Type 2 and small molecule HA. I've seen one brand put type 1, 2 and 3 together so perplexing. For now, I have decided to separate taking the Type 2 and Type 1/Type 3 at different times of day on empty stomach. Any other views on this matter?"

12/06/2011: Maggie G. from Laredo, Texas/usa: "Hi, I would like to use the hyaluronic acid remedy suggested by Ted for herniated disc. The problem is I can not take salt. Ted mentioned that the salt will keep the HA from spoiling and is the second ingredient. What else should I add? Please help!"

12/06/2011: Dud from From The Woods Of, Wv, Usa replies: "Maggie G; The salt is added to the hyaluron water solution to act as a preservative when making a pint or quart volume. If you can not take the salt, them make a smaller volume, and consume it in 24 to 48 hours, at the correct dose;... Then mix up another small batch. In this way, the hyaluron will not have time to spoil, and you don't need a preservative in it.

Hyaluron is a protein type substance, and spoils easily. Keep it refrigerated and cold. Make smaller batches that will be used up fairly fast."

Noni Juice

05/09/2012: Farmgirl from Calgary, Canada: "Herniated Disc, Energy, psorasis, High Blood Pressure:

I first took noni for a herniated disc. It took 3 months of being on a loading dose of 4 oz per day split am and pm, but eventually it resolved after having endured 9 months of physio, traction etc which was ineffective. Within 2 weeks of starting I had more energy than I had for years and since 1997 have not had to take naps mid day to keep going. I had suffered with psorasis since the age of 16 but have not had any since 1997 either. I will take noni daily until the day I die.

I started my mother on noni in her late 80's on it at only 2 oz per day and her high blood pressure dropped within a week from 165/90 (with medication) to 87/49. She reduced (halved) the medication and it came up to 120/80 but later the doctor halved her medication again and it remained near normal (as long as she could remember to take it). It also did drop her blood sugars some but not enough to stop her medication."

Remedies Needed

12/15/2008: April from Bonney Lake, WA: "Since herniating my low back on the job about a decade ago, I have experienced chronic pain, massive weight gain (130 lbs), depression, hair loss, and an overwhelming feeling of CHRONIC fatigue. No matter how many hours of sleep I get, when I wake up I feel like I have been repeatedly mowed over by a large truck. Name the supplement, I probably have it sitting on my kitchen counter; I've developed a "taste aversion" to any nutritional supplement. Swallowing vitamins can make me gag, even though I know they could possibly help.

As of today, I have had my second MRI and my condition is worsening. My disc is almost non-existent, herniated out both sides at L4-5. My other herniated disc, S1, is almost as bad. Extreme arthritis and disc degeneration is present. My ortho wants to give me nerve shots of steriods of some sort, under x-ray procedure, then perform surgery. Five years ago I had a microdiscectomy that relieved some of the leg pain. I've just come off of a week of Prednisone, and like clockwork, I've gained 10 more pounds!!!

Along with back pain, I'm also dealing with depression associated with my husband dying of ALS. This has put a double strain on my emotional and physical health.

I'm tired of trying things that do not work. I'm tired of being forced to take painkillers because it's the only form of relief I can get. I'm tired of being short, fat, and balding. Feeling 90 instead of a vibrant 42 is really a sorry state to be in, and at times the feeling of hopelessness is overwhelming. HELP!!!!!"

So sorry to hear about your hubby and all the health problems you're enduring. I wish I had the answer that is perfect for you- but I don't. I just wanted to let you and everyone who reads EarthClinic to know that even when it seems like no one has the answers- there's One who does... so maybe through PRAYER you'll find the peace you're searching for. God Bless you!"
08/26/2009: Andi from St. Paul, Mn replies: "Dear April, I suggest you look into non-surgical spinal decompression. My Chiropractor does it in her office. I've never had it done, but I know she has been able to help others a lot. It may not work for what you have, but it would sure be worth checking to see if someone in your area does the treatment. Good Luck!"

[YEA]  10/10/2012: Kelitababy from Yucaipa, Ca, Usa: "After having had a herniated disc in C7 of my neck, my throat was feeling like I had a pill stuck in it. I found out by accident that it is all due to triger points in the muscles in the neck and there is lots of new information online about triger points and how to relieve them either by a trained massage therapist or do it yourself with online help. My relief came after 15 minutes of a specially trained massage therapist gave me a neck muscle treatment in a chair and the lump in the throat was gone and I felt better than I had in 6 months. Totally amazed me and I started researching trigger points online. So Happy now."
