Sakispeaks from Olympia Fields, Illinois, United States writes: "Gastric Bypass & Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS)

I had gastricbypass surgery in January of 2006. I developed burning mouth syndrome November of 2008. I can barely eat any food at all because the BMS is so painful... everything I eat hurts! I'm new to this site, and would like to know if there is anything that Ted or anyone else can suggest that would give me immediate relief of the pain...I just want to be able to eat a full meal (even though it would be small due to the surgery), as opposed to the 4 bites I'm able to eat before the BMS renders the meal unenjoyable and then I'm done!

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

[YEA] Kate from Newport, Ri writes: "Hi, I was in graduate school, managing to eat healthy mostly vegetarian home cooked food - but not sleeping enough and extremely stressed and drinking coffee - when my tongue started to burn. In a couple of days it got so bad that it became insanely distracting and spread to my gums and lips. Eating (especially acidic foods) became unbearably uncomfortable. My tongue looked normal and I felt fine - just the usual stressed and tired. I was desperate for a solution and went to a great country doctor near my school. He explained that the cause of Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS) is hard to determine and it can come and go for years. One theory, he said, was B vitamin or iron deficiency. He asked if I ate red meat and told me to go eat dark green leafy vegetables like kale and chard and red meat 2x a day for three days and see what happens. If no change, I'd go back for some tests. In two days of eating beef and kale the burning was gone. I realized that the stress was causing my digestive system to just not work very well; I wasn't absorbing the vitamins I needed from my food or from the B complex supplement I had been taking. B vitamin supplements don't work, your stressed out system just flushes them out. Whole foods, a healthy digestive system, and calming down a bit are key. This is not the cause/solution for all BMS cases but it is a good start in your self-diagnosis to rule out the possibility of vitamin/mineral deficiency. If you have BMS, you have my sympathy! And I hope you find some relief soon."

[BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS] Rhonda from Lakewood, Ca writes: "Hello, I tried the remedy for sour acid stomach and sore tongue with coating plus GERD intended for Ted, which was 1/2 tsp baking soda & 1/4 tsp Potassium Citrate plus Magnesium Citrate, B vitamins, & amino acids. My B vitamins come from a multi-vitamin that I am taking. I started yesterday and got immediate results! However, I now have diarhea with mucus. I wonder how long I should take this remedy safely. Also, I have candida, so when I tried a store bought veg juice, I seemed to suffer from hypoglycemia and brain fog. I am only eating home made chicken broth. Any idea how long this could last? It has already been a week. Has anyone had this experience? One more thing, I am currently taking 1/2 gm of Progesterone 2x/day, but was advised to go off because it is causing fatigue and feeding the yeast. Any response would be appreciated. Thanks."

Hi, Can anyone suggest a cure for burning mouth syndrome, I've had this for 7 months, and the pain is unbearable. the only thing that helps calm it down a bit is sugar free gum, but I'm hoping there is an alternative to this.

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR AND BAKING SODA

[NAY] N Golam from Cherry Hill, NJ writes: "re: Apple Cider Vinegar Dose. About tongue and mouth acid issues! Two tablespoons [ACV] and baking soda!!!! It doesn't work that way... Ted thinks that because the human body works best in a slightly alkaline condition then his food should also be alkaline. In fact this is patently false. Some foods actually alkalize the body when consumed in their naturally acidic form. ACV is one such food. A little research on this subject would quickly settle this issue for you. His main problem is dosage. Some people think \'more is better\' but in this case it is not true. The correct dose is one teaspoon per cup! So forget the baking soda, its proper use is to make baked goods lighter."

[YEA] sharon from okc, ok writes: "I wrote a few months ago about burning mouth syndrome..recently just been diagnosed \'wheat gluten intolerance\" or Celiac Disease...I recommend anyone w/ these symptons to get it checked out. A good website is www.celiaccenttral.org Symptons are frequent diarrhea, weight loss, migranes, abdominal pain, gas, constipation...Symptons are no differant then everyday complaints that this is HARD to diagnosis...I would recommend cutting wheat out for 2 weeks and see if symptons dissappear..I took a stool test at www.enterolab.com. IT is $99.00 but definatley worth khowing if you have an intolerance...my burning mouth has since dissappated...what happens is your body gets inflamed...and everbody symptons are different..google celiac and read about it.. thanks"

[YEA] Carol from Fairfield, CT writes: "I am using oatmeal/steel cut (cup) morning with cinnamon and soy milk. Lo fat chicken broth with instant Barley (1/2 cup added to soup) for lunch. When I get hungry I have plain yogurt. I take udo encyme 2 capsules before each meal, and 1/4 cup aloe before all big meals. I have suffered all my life with GERD and acid mouth. This has not been easy because I like white wine. I have 2 glasses at least 3-4 times a week. This diet has soothed my sore stomach. I tried everything and this works. It is inexpensive and healthy!!I also had hpylori, and there is scar tissue from 2 ulcers.

It cured that rotten taste in my mouth. I have had to go on a food regimen because I know that everything I eat sends me to the moon with the burping. If you took a match to me I would blow sky high. I got several books from library and found the food we eat today and the additives in them are not good for we who have stomach problems. Barley is used in most of my meals. Enzyme capsules and aloe drink helps so much also. My dad died from stomach cancer when I was young. We think that this may have been his problem too.

I do not eat candy I did not like the acid taste in mouth. The candy would increase discomfort!! Eating right is the key. After reading comments from people, many of them are taking too many drs prescriptions that is damaging to the liver. Barley, oatmeal, fat free soup, rye crisp (snacks) Aloe vera drinks, and Enzymes at least 2 before each meal. I also take a 1/2 lemon juice and 1/2 tes baking soda and glass water, to stop belching.. It will not cure the Gerd, but it will ease any stomach problems. I was tested in Lenox Hill Hospital to measure the acid level in system, it would help to run my car for a week, that is how strong. You fight the disease, do not let it fight you!!! Ulcer cures and foods are the way to go. WATCH what you eat.
