Phughes from London, London, Uk writes: "Hi there - not sure which ailment this one will go into but hope someone can help. A neurologist recently diagnosed my migraine and dizzy symptoms as a result of a head injury I sustained in August last year. The bang on the head has triggered the migraines I experienced as a young adult and which I grew out of about five years ago. His recommendation to rid me of the dizziness is to be on beta blockers for at least 2-3 months. I'm not massively keen on prescription drugs. Can anyone recommend an alternative to 'reset' my overactive brain in the issue of balance? Effectively that is what the neurologist said the pills would do. Thanks in advance."

Mindy from Tulare, Ca. / Usa writes: "Hello,

My name is Mindy. I am 45 years old and have a handful of health issues. I am Hypothyriod. I have clinical migraines daily. I am anemic. And... Now, I am perimenopausal. Joy joy!

I have been suffering from migraines for over 10 years now and they have gotten more intense and much more frequent over the past 2 years or so. Doctors have tried all sorts of meds on me. Relpax is what I currently use, though I truly do despise medication. Unfortunately, it is the only thing that I've found that somewhat works. Long story short, I finally had an MRI of my head done about a week and a half ago and the results showed normal brain, however chronic sinusitis. I'm afraid that is likely a broad term. Here's the thing though... I, for many many years had chronic sinus infections. I always had a minimum of 3 per year. They were horrendous. Then, they just stopped. Never had one since. Has been several years now. So, hearing this new diagnosis makes sense if I take my past into account, but I was somewhat surprised. My Neurologist is referring me to a specialist. Am waiting for ins to approve. Anyhow, this may be the answer that I (and many members of my family) have been waiting for all of these years. Time will tell. I am concerned that likely they will want to do surgery on me. I would love nothing more than to avoid surgery and medication.

I know that you guys cannot "prescribe" persay, but can you give me ideas of what to try? I have lived in Tulare County, Ca. All of my life and we have very poor air quality. Some of the worst in all of the U.S. so that most certainly contributes daily.

I am quite anxious for guidance outside Western medicine which I truly am not a fan of.

Please give some ideas if you would. I would really love love feedback. I know that whatever you suggest may or may not work for me, but I am willing to try.

Thanks for putting up with my rambling! This is so important to me as these migraines have turned my life completely upside down. I am debilitated a good portion of my life which causes me to have almost No life.

Please write me back as soon as you are able to.

Thanks so much!

Mindy

Agapegirl from Orlando, Florida, Usa writes: "For 14 years I have had 3-day migraines approximately once a month (more or less). This week my 3-day migraine morphed into a 5-day full head headache. I haven't had a traditional "headache" since the migraines began, so I was very concerned. My standard migraine Rx (Relpax) only takes pain away for a few hours and it didn't even do that this week. A couple of times I tried 3 ibuprofen, which worked for about 2 hours each time. On earthclinic, ACV seemed to work for some people, so I decided to drive (nauseated and in pain) 20 minutes to the health store. I bought ACV capsules and took 2 (500 mg each) with water in the parking lot. By the time I reached home the headache/migraine pain was gone. I was exhausted and aching from 5 days of pain so I went to bed early. I took my normal nighttime supplements (200 mg chelated magnesium and 1 gr L-Glutamine), I woke up refreshed and back to normal. I will try ACV capsules the next time pain strikes. Thanks.

[YEA] Gisela from Lawrence, Massachusetts, Usa writes: "I mixed 2 1/2 tbsp of organic apple cider vinegar with 1 tbsp of organic raw honey into 8 oz of spring water and added ice (made from spring water) to treat a full-blown migraine (headache from neck to forehead, blurry vision, light sensitivity, horrible nausea and sensitivity to sound). I also put on sunglasses to help with the light sensitivity and placed a frozen bottle of water at the base of my skull propped up behind me on a rolled up pillow (helps to stop the excess blood flow to the brain, which in turn reduces the pain as well).

I had tried Excederin Migraine with no luck. This migraine was on and off for a few days, a menstrual migraine (I get one before my period, one during my period and one or two after). After drinking about an once, I felt good enough to take off my sunglasses.

I ate a few saltines to help my stomach as the taste of the mixture didn't sit well with my already horrible nausea, that allowed me to drink more of it. I am now about half-way done with the 8oz and feel about 90% better. The saltines helps to majorly combat the nausea.

I want to add that in the past I tried just the organic Apple Cider Vinegar and water for migraines and it only helped after numerous cups and only provided like 50% relief. I believe that using organic raw unfiltered honey made all the difference as it contains beneficial minerals that have healing powers themselves. The oganic apple cider vinegar with the mother in it together with the organic raw unfiltered honey has been the winning combo for me as well as adding the ice to the base of the skull and using saltines for the nausea.

Hope this helps!

[YEA] Sonja from Greenwood, La writes: "About a year ago I stopped drinking anything with caffeine in it and quit eating chocolate as this was advice given in a book about preventing migraines. It helped my migraines not to be as long and as painful, but they came back none the less. I decided to stop using artificial sweetener in my lemonade I make every day and started using Stevia. One package every morning is all I use. I NEVER get migraines anymore as long as I faithfully use this natural sweetener. I have made the mistake of not using it for a couple of days and I wind up with the start of a migraine. But if I take some stevia, mix it in some water and drink it real fast before the migraine gets worse, it gets rid of it for me. I don't know what it is about this natural sweetener that has cured my migraines but I thought I'd share it with others just in case it can help them too. The stevia I get is the Wal-Mart brand that is in the vitamin section in a box."

[YEA] Melanie B from Los Angeles, Ca, Usa writes: "Fenugreek & Thyme for Migraines

For years I suffered from Migraines. The symptoms I experienced were nausea, light sensitivity, smell sensitivity, and sharp pain on the left temple as well as my eye. To make matters worse this lasted for 2-3 days. I then noticed that it would happen around my menstrual cycle ever month without fail. I couldn't find relief in any over the counter medications. It got to be debilitating. The only thing I could do is lay in bed in a dark quiet room with a cold towel over my head.

One night I said enough is enough, I got up and ran cold water over my head and neck, as I did this the migraine would subside but when I took my head away from the water it would come back. I then remembered being given Fenugreek & Thyme capsules a few months back and decided to give it another try, but this time instead of taking the recommended dose of 1000 mg (700 mg of which was Fenugreek and 300 mg of Thyme), I increased the dosage amount by three and I took 3000 mg.

In 20 minutes my migraine was GONE! All these years of failed over the counter medications and being miserable and all I needed was in an herb. I was able to get a good night's sleep and when I woke in the morning I felt it coming on again so I took 1500mg, but it didn't seem to stop it so I took another 1500mg 30 minutes later and again the migraine disappeared. (I haven't noticed any side effects so far but if anything comes up I will repost).

I hope this helps, and I am happy to add my experience to the community as you all have given me so many great remedies over the years!

[YEA] Debbie from Melbourne, Australia writes: "I had a migraine coming on yesterday.. It was getting a bad enough to need something for it... I could feel the pulsating vein in the side of my head. I decided to try cayenne pepper to see if I could stop it.

Last time I drank the cayenne mixed with hot water and I did feel a bit sick afterward so I decided to try something different.

I grabbed a pinch of cayenne and put it directly under my tongue and left it there. I thought I felt pretty quick relief as the pulsating vein seemed to be less noticeable, but the pain was still there. I added a pinch of cayenne a few more times under my tongue, swallowing the excess cayenne along the way. Doesn't taste too good but better than a whole cup of hot cayenne tea. It is a bit painful and you do salivate a lot. I also put a pinch of cayenne directly on the tip of my tongue and left it there.

Well I can say it got slowly better and then vanished (within 1/2 an hour to an hour). Normally it would just get worse until I take about 3 panadol.

[YEA] Ck from Erie, Pa writes: "I have suffered with migraines for 61 years with relief only from sesame oil pulling and acv. It never completely alleviated migraines but helped. The past five years the migraines increased from two or three a week to five. I missed so much work, was out of it most of the time and unable to function when a new naturopath suggested I might be gluten sensitive! After yrs at pgh and Cleveland clinic no one had ever suggested that! I had been living on toast, too I'll to eat much else! I immediately started a gluten free diet and amazingly have been migraine free four months today! I feel my life has been a gift returned to me! I still use avc and sesame oil pulling every day for the remarkable health benefits but want to share my experience for any of you migraine sufferers. Our modified wheats now have over 500 times more gluten than they did 20 yrs ago. It is estimated that 50%of the population of the U.S. have some gluten related illness. Our livers simply cannot process this load. I hope my experience may help someone out there!

[YEA] Organic Mama from Minneola, Fl writes: "Thank you everyone for for the glowing testimonies on acv. Ive had some around for yrs and was never able to really get used to drinking it until recently I got a new job and was getting a migraine like everyday. I was taking a popular migraine over the counter pill to get rid of it and I know that it was making me sick so I thought to look on here and thier were so many positive testimonies and I wanted to get off the medicine due to the caffine in it was hurting my bladder.

The first day I did like 5 rounds of the honey with the Apple Cider Vinegar in about 8oz of water the following day like 3 rounds then 2 then none for a day or 2. Never had a migraine since. Yay!!!!

So today I took a supplement that I had an allergic reaction to, lots of sneezing and this caused my bladder to leak. My eyes were horribly itching too. So I came back here and looked up allergies and here it was again ACV the cure all. Within a half hr all the allergy symptoms were completely gone. I am very greatful for this site and wanted to contribute due to the wonderful and simple effects of the ACV. What I love best is that anyone can afford it. I have a few health books by the braggs family and they are great but I really love this site best due to the specific testimonies. Thank you Ted for everything you do to help the health challenges of so many of us. Organic mama

Debbi from Winston Salem, North Carolina, United States Of Am writes: "The first migraine I had was one month after I stopped smoking at age 33, in1990. It woke me up, I was blind and vomiting before my feet hit the floor. I was divorced with two children and this was very scarey for them. (Let me state: I smoked as a teenager but quit at 18 the day I found out I was pregnant with my first child and did not start back until age 28 due to stress from their Daddy's doodies. ) The migraines started coming once a month. I couldn't say if it was hormone related because I had to have a hysterectomy at 25. After many tests (the doc thought for sure I had a serious problem tumor etc.) and losing my sight days after a migraine in the middle of the grocery store, he put me on a Beta Blocker. He found no serious problem. He did say that quitting smoking could be the cause, it was rare, but it happens. I then developed side effects to the Beta Blocker and had to discontinue use. He said there was nothing else he could give me. Buddy, I went out and bought smokes right away. I would have eaten non-filter Camels if it would keep me from having those. He suggested I wait a year and try again. I did and exactly one month to the day "Migraine Hell". The day of my younger sister's wedding and I was maid of honor. Well this maid didn't feel so honorable and was in the hospital. I quit again in 1992, same story, different day. I just gave up.

Then in 2003 I called the doctor and he told me they had made sooo many advances in migraine treatments, he felt sure we could do this. I quit in April of 2003 and sure enough they started coming. Topamax worked for awhile but they had to keep upping the dose until they said I had to stop it. From their I went to feverfew, cool cayenne, Maxalt, Imitrex(which instead of making it a little more intense and then bringing down, it would just stay much more intense), Staydol spray, Frova, Botox (which worked the first time)you name it, I've had it. My doctor became ill and I was sent to another doctor in his practice who is supposed to be the go to guy for migraines in this city, not! When he did the injections of Botox, he did not do them the same and it was futile. I started back smoking after being quit for almost a year thinking that would stop them, NOT! I was then put on the dreaded Fentanyl Patch. I also have Fibromyalgia(which I have controlled beautifully with Malic Acid and Magnesium for years) both of those docs decided it would be a good idea. NOT! Don't ever go on that. I then graduated to Oxycotin not just for a migraine but a slow release 30mg tablet twice a day. I had to get away from this nut. I know this type of medication is not good for long term use.

I found a great doc, he used diet, vitamins and medication. Only it was short lived. His partner accepted a position at a hospital and bless his heart, he was 70, and decided it was time for him to retire. Funny thing is, the hospital his partner went to my doc used to be the head of neurology. He left there and started a clinic of his own because the medical profession in general does not recognize herbs and supplements.

Enough of my chatter about my story. I am now 54. I have one most days. I lost my job in 2004 due to migraines and have been on disability since 2008. Yes it should have been sooner but I was determined to beat this, still am. I am constantly researching for any new ideas, but darling they do not go away just because you turn 50. As a matter of fact, they can be caused by menopause. Which may be the case with me. I was told I would start it 10yrs earlier due to the hysterectomy. My mother went through it starting in her forties. You do the math.

Jesus has kept me going through all of this and believe me many times a guillotine has seemed inviting. He is where my strength comes from and I know without him I would not be hear any longer. I am learning much during this time and I fully believe that I will be healed and made whole!

God bless all of you and my prayers go out to you. Unless you experience a migraine, you really can't relate to what that person is going through. Your friends and family don't know what to do and it is painful for them to watch you in such pain and not be able to do anything about it. I am blessed to have a husband who knows the Lord. We were married in 2003. You can see our marriage has been more on the worse than the better side. We remain resolved that we will walk out on the other side of this soon. I am seeing glimmers of hope. A month ago, I walked out into the sun without shades. I figure right now, my future is so bright, I have to wear shades!

Keep smiling and moving! Debbi

[YEA] Dorothea from Waynesville, Nc writes: "ACV definitely helps with my migraines, which start in the back of my neck and creep through my head into the forehead. Nothing helped anymore unless I'd take something so strong that it could be dealt on the street. Not my cup of thea though and I drive a school bus! I tried the 2-3 tbsp. ACV in about 8 oz of water with a little honey. It really tastes good, like tart apple juice. Anyway about 20 minutes later my migraine/headache was considerably better and I could think straight again and the fatigue that usually comes with this headache was gone. I drink the concoction now everyday at least once and more whenever needed.

[YEA] Elaine from Flint, Texas writes: "I have been reading earth clinic for about a year now looking for relief of 15 plus years of debilitating migraines. About 8 months ago I started taking 400 mg. Of CoQ 10 everyday and for awhile I thought I had my migraines under control. It wasn't unusual for me to wake up every morning with one and some days they would last for 4 days with the nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to noise, smells and light. I notice they started letting up some and came less frequent and for shorter duration with the addition of the CoQ10 but I was still having them just less frequently. This is where I decided to add Nattokinase. I take one a day and it's 2000 FU. I have been on the Natto now for a little over 4 months and I have not had one single migraine. I felt I needed to shout to the world my experience. The migraines had ruled my life for so long. Kept me from living a normal life. I hope migraine sufferers will try this combo and see if it works for them. I know I have stumbled upon a miracle I have long prayed for. Hope this helps someone else."

Giulietta from Gandia, Spain writes: "My latest findings about migraines:And I am much much better. There are lots of underlying problems which lead to migraines so if you resolve them (or go towards resolving them)then the migraines will be less strong and fewer or you might be able to avoid them altogether. There are 4 main problems

1.) Digestion - always have enzymes with you to take whenever the first sign of a migraine appears and /or after you have cooked food.

2.) Circulation - there is certainly a circulation disorder in a migraine sufferer. So improve circulation-a.) By walking at least an hour a day nonstop 6 days a week b.) Natural supplements that are known to help circulation.

3. Sugar balance - It is important to maintain sugar levels so take stevia instead of sweeteners or sugar or fructose and eat regularly.

4 Nutrients. - Very important to take nutrients that the brain needs ie: magnesium, linseeds, vit B, wheatgerm and beetroot

Other essentials for avoiding migraines:
A- Eat alot of raw food - the minimum per day a big lettuce salad with at least 2 other raw veg and seeds, and apple cider vinegar, cold pressed oil, sea salt or rock salt and cayenne pepper
B. - Completely avoid coffee, black tea, milk and soya products like miso.
C- Sleep in a very well ventilated room.

Good luck

Vetta from Northeast, Usa writes: "I came upon this by accident and have since learned that several friends also use this trick. When you feel one coming on, get yourself a really thick milkshake (like the fast food places make) and suck it through a straw as fast as you can. Don't eat it slowly. The speed plus the cold can stop the pain in minutes. Of course the sugar and other gunk is bad for you, but the trade-off is worth it to stop the pain. Any flavor works."

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] Rachael from Naples, Fl, Usa writes: "I take coQ10 daily for migraines. Although I still get them the amount of them has been reduced by about 50%. Clinical trials have found coQ10 to be effective at migraine prevention. Research was released in 2004 by American Academy of Neurology. CoQ10 can be found at any health food or drugstore.

I also use Oxygen as an abortive for cluster headaches and have found it to be helpful for migraines and hangovers. I keep an oxygen tank next to my bed. You do need a prescription from a doctor for oxygen. Oxygen is actually the recommended treatment for cluster headaches for an acute attack.

Tom from Regina, Sk writes: "MIGRAINES:

Here is a very quick and cheap thing to try, because all it'll cost is a small bottle of the niacin form (nicotinic acid) of Vitamin B3! I note that B3 is not listed under the Vitamins on this site, and B3 is not in the Remedies list under Migraines, either.

From the Linus Pauling site (well, one of them):

Two Case Reports on the Treatment of Acute Migraine with Niacin: Its Hypothetical Mechanism of Action Upon Calcitonin-Gene Related Peptide and Platelets
Jonathan E. Prousky, N. D. , FRSH; Erika Sykes, N. D. (Cand)

http://www.orthomolecular.org/library/jom/2003/pdf/2003-v18n02-p108.pdf

At the first sign of aura, he orally ingested 300 to 500mg of niacin, slightly chewing the niacin pills to allow them to dissolve slowly in his mouth. Hall found that the benefits of niacin were most pronounced when taken on an empty stomach, although it was noted that there was still a MH relieving effect when taken after meals. Additionally, he remarked that the migraines were resolved when intense flushing occurred.

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] Simsboynton from Vancouver, Wa writes: "My husband read that vinegar reduced cramping in athletes - so he tried it for the leg cramps he gets from riding 40 miles on his bike. One day he suggested I try it for my frequent migraines - he thought it could affect the sodium channels that are linked to migraines. I get the kind w/ hypersensitivity to light, sound, etc., sometimes w/ naseau. Well, it's not 100%, but it works fast and helps more than other painkillers. He uses approx 1 tsp. apple cider vinegar in 2-3 TBS water. Someone should do clinical research on the sodium channel aspect as per migraines."
