Natural Home Remedies and Supplements to Treat Vertigo and Meniere's Disease

"Meniere's disease is a disorder of the inner ear that can affect hearing and balance. It is characterized by episodes of dizziness and tinnitus and progressive hearing loss, usually in one ear. It is caused by an increase in volume and pressure of the endolymph of the inner ear. It is named after the French physician Prosper Meniere, who first reported that vertigo was caused by inner ear disorders in an article published in 1861.

The symptoms of Meniere's are variable; not all sufferers experience the same symptoms. However, so-called "classic Meniere's" is considered to comprise the following four symptoms: * Periodic episodes of rotary vertigo (the abnormal sensation of movement) or dizziness. * Fluctuating, progressive, unilateral (in one ear) or bilateral (in both ears) hearing loss, often initially in the lower frequency ranges. * Unilateral or bilateral tinnitus (the perception of noises, often ringing, roaring, or whooshing), sometimes variable. * A sensation of fullness or pressure in one or both ears.

Meniere's often begins with one symptom, and gradually progresses. A diagnosis may be made in the absence of all four classic symptoms. However, having several symptoms at once is more conclusive than having each individual symptom at separate times." (Wikipedia)

WARNING!

05/19/2010: Patrice from Nashua, Nh: "I am reading in the vertigo section re Ted's recommendations. Then I continue where people ask Ted questions to clarify his regimen but I do not see any responses. Dates are in Jan of this year... I also notice in other sections where people ask questions and very seldom do I see them addressed. Occasionally EC will step in, but that's about it. Is there an offline communication that is private answering? Thank you for clarifying this with me. patrice"

EC: Hi Patrice,

Yes, true. We try and send most questions addressed to Ted via Skype, but he only answers a few questions each month. He did just answer a bunch of questions, which will be posted on the site shortly.

If you want an answer from Ted, best to keep bugging us (EC) and we'll bug Ted. We'll send him the questions again from this thread.

the cure is/was,, lay on back on bed.. head hanging off but neck supported neutral..then roll head to the right side for 10 seconds.. then back to neutral for 10 sec. .. then roll to left for 10 sec. .. then back to neutral.. it's hard to to do.. brain spinning at warp speed.. probably vomit. but hang in there.. what happens is by doing this clears the fleck .. like magic your good to go.."
11/08/2011: Zeninfinity from Santa Rosa, Ca, Usa replies: "What Crabby from Townsend is talking about The Epley Maneuver.

It is a great way to deal with a vertigo episode. I had a mild attack last week, did the Epley Maneuver and the room rocking back and forth stopped!

Here's a youtube video of this simple movement. I hope it works for you!

12/16/2009: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand: "Meniere's Disease:

This is the simplest possible cure for this condition. You should see a dramatic reduction in tinnitus, dizziness, vomiting in a matter of days. The cause is a virus, likely to be a herpes viruses. The condition attacks the area and when you first have it, you know when it started. The remedy to get most of the viruses killed is to take 1000 mg of vitamin C, followed by a 55 minute doses and take 1200 mg of lysine for a total of 6 doses on the first day. On the second day it's 1200 mg of lysine at 55 minute dose interval for a total of 4 doses. The third and fourth day is the same. To make sure it's completely gone, you try to take at least 1200 mg of lysine dose twice a day for the next 30 days, or longer. The point is, the very first week usually 90% is gone on the first week. The lysine is kept up at a fairly high level. For the more tougher cases, an aspirin 500 mg can be added along with the vitamin C on before starting on the daily doses of lysine. That means vitamin C 1000 mg plus aspirin 500 mg before starting the 6 doses of lysine on first day, 4 doses on second day, 4 doses on the third day, 4 doses on the fourth day. It's a four day remedy that usually kills most of the herpes out of the system. If it isn't out, the attacks will be far and between, instead of getting more frequent attacks with each coming year, until it becomes very debilitating. I managed to see a couple of cures, from this Meniere's disease. If there are tougher ones, there is alpha lipoic acid, zinc and alkalization to deal with it, as well as lemon bioflavonoid, piracetam, and the like. But it's likely to be lysine, vitamin C and aspirin in that order. I am presently investigating alpha lipoic acid in such use, but since herpes always goes away before I get a chance to start it, I haven't yet a chance to try it yet.

Thereafter the one month, I think a maintenace dose of just 1200 mg lysine should prevent most future attacks. If not increasing the dose to just twice a day should be sufficient."

01/06/2010: Texas123 from Fort Worth, Tx replies: "Ted, Can you tell me if this remedy works for vertigo caused by shingles?

Also, I am a little confused on the directions. On the first day do you take one dose of vitamin C, then every 55 minutes just the lysine (5 times)? Then on the second day, no vitamin C and just lysine every 55 minutes until all the doses have been taken? and so on?"

01/07/2010: Littledove from In The Sticks, Nevada replies: "Re: H2O2 in nebulizer - Ted can you please tell us some specifics on your nebulizer? I looked on eBay and I am not sure what type to buy. Thank you so much."
[NAY]  01/11/2010: Rob from Manhattan, New York replies: "the lysine didn't work for me...though I only tried one day of it...but I could tell there was no relief of symptoms.. The high dose of lysine was a little hard on the body. I have suffered from this ailment for close to 9 years...very little vertigo, but fullness in ears, & back of neck..some jaw & face stiffness. I believe Ted is right, that it is a virus, but could be one of many.

A well respected Chinese doctor said it was a cold virus that had settled..I have yet to find anything that has come close to a cure. Some relief from simple diet and essential oils rubbed around the ear..no caffeine, sugars, and alcohol."

01/13/2010: Rob from Manhattan, New York replies: "However, I did try Ted's Borax remedy. 1/4 tsp (20 Mule Brand) in a liter of water. I was rather hesitant, since there is a "contact physician immediately if ingested" warning on the side!.. I only drank a few ounces of the water mixture in the evening to see if there were any adverse reactions. (I thought this is crazy)

Last night I slept better than usual with open & free breathing...(I usually suffer from nocturnal asthma).. good dream recall. etc. I did drink a smoothy with Pycogenol and NAC (n-acetyl-cysteine) as well so it could be attributed to that. A little premature to know for sure..will follow up in a few weeks with more experience.

One thing for sure...this stuff really boosts laundry effectiveness. I had a sheet with what I thought after many washes, was permanent oil stains (from essential oils)...with Borax, it came out completely clean...I had to double check thinking I may have confused it with a newer sheet."

01/16/2010: Rob from Manhattan, New York replies: "I chose to error on the side of caution & not continue with the borax remedy. I only had the one liter of solution (with 1/4 tsp) & drank it over a few days.

(The 1st night was positive, due or not due to it, the following nights not as good as the 1st though I did notice better dream recall. Some have reported kidney pain, which is worrisome..though this could be a coincidence or ??contaminants? or reaction? As with many of us, chronic conditions are what brought us here & we will opt to try almost anything with a hint of a cure..(mine could be a fungus condition)

Instead I will look into the supplement Boron, which was made for ingestion and try to figure out the equivalent to the 1/4 tsp Mule Brand (made for external use). I would feel safer experimenting with that."

[WARNING!]  02/09/2010: D from Amsterdam, Holland replies: "Hi I tried Ted's lysine suggestion. I have suffered vertigo for over 2 years. I had shingles when i was 15 (now 38) and again it showed up about 6 weeks ago, after an outbreak of chicken pox at my son's school. I think this virus is in my system and is affecting me so I took Ted's remedy for 6x 1000mg lysine day 1 and 4 times 1000mg lysine for the next 4 days. I was so sick. I thought I was dying. I had a pounding headache, it woke me up at night, my vision seemed darkened, I was extra dizzy. It was horrible. When I stopped with the lysine the headache went my dizzyness calmed down. I had a rest from the lysine for 2 days then took it again. Just one pill 1000mg, again headache. I think this can be dangerous. Just a warning."
02/18/2010: Laurie from Belleville, Ont replies: "Hello Ted You've always been so helpful in the past.

Could you please clarify the directions for the vitamin c and lysine solution??? I too am a little confused about the directions.

On the first day do you take one dose of 1000 mg vitamin C, then every 55 minutes just the lysine (5 times)?
Or do I take the 1000 mg vitamin C , Plus 1200mg lysine every 55 mins for a total of 6 doeses the first day
On the second day, no vitamin C and just lysine every 55 minutes for a total of 4 doses
3rd/4th days : The same as the 2nd day

I did find lysine today...but it only comes in a 500mg dosage. In your opinon would I take 1000mg or 1500mg instead of the 1200mg ????

OR have you come across a better solution you might share with us ????

Thank you for any clarification you provide"

09/05/2011: Lou from Tyler, Tx replies: "This is very weird. I had the severe neck pain, the blurred vision and dizziness. I went to the ER twice and no diagnosis. They checked me for a brain tumor and carbon monoxide poisoning. (I had gone to a cookout where they were cooking with charcoal near the house. ) We went to a frozen yogurt place (because I felt something cold would make me feel better). They had a new flavor--coconut! So, I got the coconut and put some fresh coconut on top. I ate it and my neck pain is gone as well as the dizziness for now. Could it have been something fungal in my thyroid? Or in my head? I am hyopthyroid, by the way."
11/29/2011: Sharon from Wesley Chapel, Florida replies: "I have taken lysine to prevent cold sores for 30 years now. I did some research and found that I could take 1000 mg each of lysine and vit c every hour during severe attacks and it worked fast. I even found my severely sore throat subsiding within minutes of taking the first dose. By the next day, my sore throat was gone, and I was sure I had strep coming on because of the knives in the throat feeling. If you were feeling dizziness, it could be because of the subsiding of the fluid in your ears, causing a temporary condition of dizziness. One time, I had waited to get the lysine until l had a full attack of sore throat and a bad cold, and took a whole bottle of lysine and vit c just to get some relief, and needed another bottle to rid myself of it in a couple days with lots of rest. I certainly felt weak and dizzy then, but it was only due to the illness. cheers."
05/02/2012: Ker from Hong Kong replies: "Hi Ted, Thank you for your great tips. I have suffered four years now with poor hearing on my left ear along with tinnitus and slight dizziness that never seem to go away. It all happened when one day I was struck by herpes shingle on my left side of my face. At first my complete left side of face was numb, at that point I thought it was permanent. After taking prescription from my doctor and together with acupuncture on my face, I slowly regained my feeling and now the sensitivity on my face is 100 percent regained. However my loss of hearing on my left ear, tinnitus, and slight dizziness has not gone away. Do you think your remedie for my situation is still worth a try? Or is it too late for me to do anything? I truly appreciate your response and is almost dying to find a cure. I am still living each day with dizziness.

Best regards, Ker"

SIDE EFFECT

[SIDE EFFECTS]  01/01/2008: Scott from Atlanta, GA: "I have had acid reflux for several years now. I was on a prescription for Prilosec before it was OTC. Usually only took a pill when I felt the reflux coming on strong. Over time, it has gotten worse with many reflux attacks daily. Two months ago, I started taking Prilosec OTC every day to see if I could fend it off. It worked great and I rarely felt any reflux all day long. Then, I had three violent episodes of Vertigo....which is similar to being spun around while you are violently seasick and stays like that for about 5 hours. Turns out this is rare but known side-effect of Prilosec. Needless to say, I'm off it now. I am relying on Pepsid AC now which works great but only last for a few hours and gets expensive. I'm planning to try the ACV next."

01/07/2011: Bill from Erie, Pa: "after 1 year of seeking help with ear specialists in Pittsburgh and Cleveland Clinic trying to rid my meniere's my local chiropractor found some anomalies in my neck and totally cured my disorder I can't EVER thank them enough for saving my life"

[YEA]  03/06/2011: Jj from Pittsburgh, Pa replies: "I have been suffering with tinnitus and symptoms of Meniere's disease such as vertigo and nausea. After visiting the ENT and taking megadoses of antibiotics I still did not receive any relief. At my wits end, I tried a Chiropracter in Florida while visiting the area; he helped me greatly. I was so ill the day of my visit, my daughter had to walk me into the office - when I left, I felt much better and was able to function again. Give this a try, I found this treatment more effective and quicker than all the perscriptions and weeks or months of agony."
03/08/2011: Surulere from Bloomfield, Nj, Usa replies: "JJ, please if you have the info for the Chiropractor, please send it to surulere(at)gmail(dot)com. That will be very helpful. I have suffered Tinnitus for months now."
05/03/2011: Emily from Jacksonville, Fl replies: "I live in Jacksonville FL and started going to a chiropractor specializing in atlas orthoganal (sp?) repositioning. It is not the typical "popping/cracking" chiro care. They take very specific x-rays, map out your center, and use this really cool machine - I believe it is using sound waves, you do not feel anything literally - and it's truly amazing. I have suffered vertigo for a year straight, it got worse and worse, went to the ENT, antibiotics, ear drops, garlic in the ear, you name it. My dr. has changed my life. The vertigo has lessened greatly and is manageable. He told me it will probably take about 6 months or so before I am back to normal. I had a concussion back in Nov. 2009. Dr. P said the way I hit my head jammed my atlas bone into the brain stem, which is basically your central supply of information that is dispersed through your body. The vertigo started happening around April 2010 (about 5 months after the concussion) and progressively got worse. I have always suffered ear/sinus issues, so I thought it was just a stubborn infection, but it wasn't. Anyway, the info - if anyone is interested in learning is about atlas repositioning. Hope this helps!"
05/19/2011: Krb214 from Erie, Pa, Usa replies: "Hello Bill from Erie, PA! Good to know someone with similar problems from the area. I live in Erie, PA too, and would love to go to the same Chiropractor to fix this issue. It seems hard to find a good honest doctor these days. Would you please message me back with the name of the Chiropractor and office? I would really be happy to have my life to be changed too. Thank you Bill!"

[YEA]  11/09/2007: Carolyn from Pittsburgh, PA: "re: Vertigo, hearing loss, Meniere's symptoms -- I suddenly lost my hearing in one ear, and shortly there after, started getting vertigo. I knew it was somehow related to an incident that caused very slight physical, but more mental trauma. After several doctor visits, taking steroids, seeing an Ear, nose and throat doctor, having an MRI done, seeing a neurologist, I still was not cured, and no one knew what the problem was. I also noticed that if I ate something very salty, that it might start an episode of vertigo. This comment is not about any item that helped me, it is about a particular type of doctor, and help me he did! I self referred to a chiropractor because I had heard a talk show about hearing and spinal misalignment. After starting my treatments, my vertigo gradually subsided, but took the hearing longer to come back. After months with no symptoms, I jarred my neck while horse back riding, a week later my vertigo and hearing loss came back with a vengeance! I went immediately to a chiropractor and this particular doctor had me up and running in less than two weeks, with my hearing restored. He explained that the misalignment in my neck was putting pressure on the cranial nerve that controls hearing and balance and also stated that certain foods can indeed aggravate the situation by causing dehydration, especially very salty foods, as was the case with me. This doctors regiment is not just spinal adjustment, but exercise, and nutritional advise. After being led to believe that I needed a hearing aid, or may have an incurable disease, I am so grateful that I was somehow led into the right direction and am totally symptom free. In my research I have found that thousands upon thousands of people are suffering from the same symptoms, and the cure is so simple, if the cause is the same as mine. I already had the misalignment problem, it was the mishaps that caused the further aggravation that set the vertigo and hearing loss in motion. I have noticed for years, a kind of pinched nerve feeling from my neck and into my shoulder. It does not take an accident to have neck problems, is what I am trying to relay. I hope this helps some fellow sufferers."

[YEA]  05/06/2009: Andrea from Ventnor City, NJ: "Quite recently I was suffering from a bout of Vertigo. I tried cleansing my ears with peroxide but that did not do the trick. I was out of the Colloidal Silver so went to my local health food store and picked it up. When I got home I took the first dose as recommended on the bottle... 2 tsp. on an empty stomach... and within 1/2 of an hour I could feel the pressure in my ears start to equalize. My ears started popping and slowly my Vertigo started to subside.

I have also used Colloidal Silver for sore throats... the recommended dose on the bottle... as some brands have different recommended doses depending on the suspension. It works very well."

[YEA]  01/31/2011: Jeanenne from Prescott, Az replies: "Colloidal silver is excellent for vertigo. Whether the problem is fungal, viral, bacterial or allergic, try Colloidal silver. My left ear kept feeling plugged up and it was causing vertigo and nausea. I did some research on the internet and was reminded how well colloidal silver works. I put three drops (only use 3) in my ear and by the second dose my ear completely opened up and all vertigo and nausea are gone. I feel better than I have in a long time. I also took some orally. Remember, with CS, less is more. Don't overdo it.

I tried Tad's recommendation of the lysine but it seemed to give me a headache and I didn't feel good about loading my body with so many pills (and they're giant sized and very difficult to swallow). Do yourself a favor and try colloidal silver first - mine is 15ppm."

Eliminate Aspartame and sugar free foods and drinks. I realized after reading a article regarding aspartame on EC was linked to lupus and other aliments. I came to the conclusion it caused my Vertigo. I was overdosing on the stuff daily without being aware of it. I began drinking coffee at work with artificial sweetners 1-2 cups daily, had a diet soda with my lunch, then would drink energy drinks, chewing sugar free gum. ALLLLLL contained aspartame. Once I took that out of my diet and started paying more attention to the labels on the products I consume. Its one year later still no signs of vertigo."

ELIMINATE CAFFEINE

[YEA]  10/29/2008: Alain Boutin from Derry, NH: "I start suffering mild vertigo 15 yrs ago. I was heavily drinking coffee (huuumm, good coffee...) at that time and did not know the link with vertigo.

I am very prone to motion sickness. I cannot dive either because I cannot clear the pressure in my ear. I often has mild dizziness when changing position in my youth. But the vertigo started at the age of 35 and it was something much worse. I sometimes had to lean against a wall in order to not fall when standing up or just turning the head. It I was suffering a genetic problem common in my family.

It is by change that I stopped drinking coffee, just because there were no coffee shop in my new neighborhood. The vertigo stopped. I started coffee and coca-cola and the vertigo came back.

I repeated that cycle a good dozen times, and it reconfirmed every time the link between vertigo with cafeine

I saw 2 specialist (one was Otorhinolaryngology) who sweared there were no link between cafeine and vertigo. The Otorhinolaryngology said it was some loose crystals in the ear and not much could be done except some exercises like rotating the head.

Some web site call this similar dizziness BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo) syndrome and can be cure by the Epley maneuver. I never tested it though.

Now that I stopped definitively coffee and coca-cola, I seldom have vertigo and when I do have them, they are very mild."

[YEA]  11/19/2007: Tara from Provo, Utah: "All throughout my childhood I had bouts of vertigo. Fluid would get into my ears, cross the ear drum and get stuck around the eustation tube. Recently, I had a severe bout that lasted almost a month. Decongestants and Meclizine would help but it would just come right back. I spoke with a good friend who is extremely knowledgable about herbs and she said she has had a similar problem. She uses a mix of Fenugreek and Thyme. She said its also good to use Pcynogenol as well. I have only been using the Fenugreek and Thyme mix but I have noticed a huge improvement. The mix of herbs is also good for general sinus clearing. Drink lots of water though because this will pull the fluid out of your body. Hope this helps!"

FLUORESCENT LIGHTING LINK, SUPPLEMENTS WHICH HELP

[YEA]  03/16/2008: Ester from Garden Grove, CA: "Vertigo caused by energy saving and fluorescent lighting: I have suffered from vertigo for the last year. I have found out that my vertigo is triggered by fluorescent or energy savings bulbs. I've read that the use of this lighting is questioned in Europe because it causes many health problems. Avoidance of these types of lights and supplementing with calcium (1000 mg), (500 mg) magnesium, and B 100 complex really has helped me. I have also switched to full spectrum lighting (great light!). I am now researching the possibility that I need to add zinc to my diet. Hope this helps somebody. I know how debilitating vertigo is."

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  05/18/2012: Lug from Calgary, Alberta, Canada: "I read somewhere on internet that vertigo could be because of some bacteria or infection in your ear. So u can treat it like this, take two garlic cloves, smash it, then take 2, 3 tblsp of mustard oil, heat it and roast the garlic in it. Remove it from heat. Let it get cool. Then put 2/3 drops in your affected ear at night. I did it 4 two nights and I felt pretty good. Well my vertigo is still there but not that annoying. Hopefully it will get cured if I do it continuously."

GINGER ROOT

[YEA]  02/11/2009: Ron from Emporia, Kansas: "About 1984 I woke up and got out of bed. When my feet hit the floor, my body dropped like a rock. I slowly got up and the room was spinning. It was the most strange experience I've ever had. It was like I was standing still and the world was moving. I found out it was Vertigo. I went to the doctor and he said "I don't know what to do about it...let me know if you figure it out." The Vertigo lasted for several days and slowly got better.

Every winter I would get Vertigo and over several days or weeks it would slowly get better and then go away.

I moved to Las Vegas in 1991. I was fine for a couple of years. But, then one winter, it hit me hard. It was so bad I couldn't lay down to sleep. I had to sit up and set my body up against the corner of the room. I slept horribly for days. This happened each winter for a few more years.

One night in 1996 when the vertigo was so bad that I couldn't even sleep sitting up, I was thinking about my experiences with vertigo and realized that when I got vertigo, my stomach also seemed upset. I remembered that Ginger Root was used by travelers to settle their stomachs after getting stomach upset from the local food or drink. I wondered if stomach upset might be causing the Vertigo. (Please remember that my condition always took several days or weeks to get better.) I got up and went to the kitchen and took 6 capsules of health food store Ginger Root. Within 30 minutes my stomach seemed to feel more settled. I decided to try going back to bed.

Normally when I have the Vertigo, if I'm laying down and turn my head right or left, the room starts spinning. This time...NO Vertigo! I turned my head left to right and even did is faster than normal, but no Vertigo. I slept well the whole night
and woke up with no Vertigo.

I started taking 6 capsules of Ginger Root every night after that. After a few weeks I reduced the dosage to 3 capsules before bed. This is now 2009 and I still take 3 capsules Ginger Root every night and haven't had Vertigo since 1996.

MIGRAINE LINK TO VERTIGO

07/16/2010: Cy from Baltimore, Md: "I have suffered from periodic vertigo for 10 years. Nothing has really helped. I have had to wait several days for it to pass while taking meclizine hydrochloride and allergy medicine. Recently a friend told me she had symptoms similar to mine which were correctly diagnosed as vestibular migraines. Once she told me that, it all fit together. All of the things that trigger migraines triggered my vertigo - artificial sweeteners, caffeine, some fragrances, nuts, florescent lights. I then started treated my vertigo as a migraine. The best treatment has been making sure I get 8 hours of sleep a night. But I am anxious to try Apple Cider Vinegar. And if it helps me to loose some weight too, yippy!"

OIL PULLING

03/29/2009: Tavora from Brooklyn, NY: "OP might help with inner ear infection and imbalance problems

I have a question on oil pulling. I have been suffering from an inner ear infection (or at least that's what I was told) for about 7 months now. I think I've tried everything! Tried the meds the docs/ENTs gave me but they didn't work - my condition is now beyond the acute phase and is chronic. I have two major symptoms: a rocking/imbalanced sensation....and a tightness and suffocated pain in my right ear (the affected ear). I have other mild to moderate symptoms - like tingling and nerve pain but I generally try to ignore them. I had many tests done and all came back normal. However, my upper cervical and lower back are slightly misaligned so this may be causing some compression in terms of healthy nerve flow. I don't feel at a loss - thank God for maintaining faith and hope - but I would like to restore my balance and eliminate the pain in the ear. I feel like the ear is not getting enough blood flow and because the ear houses the balance organs in the body - I surmise this is why I am still dealing with the imbalanced sensation (ie. not enough nutrients and oxygen getting into the area). I've recently seen a nutritionist/ND who is helping me fix my diet and treat other issues but I wanted to know if anyone has experienced a similar issue to mine and saw good results with oil pulling. I actually tried it today for 10 mins w/ coconut oil and it did decrease the pain in the ear - in addition to helping my sinuses drain out (this part really amazed me!) - also important to note - the ND told me he believes the infection may have stemmed from some blockage in my sinuses and that by clearing out this area, I would be in a better position to attack the virus. Well, I did want to say that after immediately doing the OP - and coughing up whatever mucus that came out - I walked around for a bit and did notice that my balance felt a bit more stabilized. Just an observation but definitely worth taking note of. Your thoughts are appreciated. :0)"

OTC ANTIHISTAMINE

[YEA]  04/11/2009: Evelina from Livonia, MI, USA: "Years ago I started experiencing dizzy spells. They became much worse. My worst experience left me on a couch for three days. The room just wouldn't stop spinning. I was tested by my doctor, ENT's, a neurologist and finally an allergist. I was allergic to my dog, mold and dust. I found benedryl (an OTC antihistamine) would cure the dizzy spells. The triggers were the allergens. I kept my dog out of the bedroom, and changed my diet, less cheese (just couldn't give it up) and no mushrooms. I already had a special filter system on my furnace, but I also bought a unit for the first floor. When I do my spring and fall gardening, I make sure to take a pill at bedtime for two to three days. All that mold in the yard can really cause my head to spin if I forget that pill. It really works. Years later, I spoke to our property manager (for a vacation rental we owned), who apologized to me for being so flaky during an earlier conversation. She said she suffered from dizzy spells and nothing was helping. I told her about my experience with benedryl. She called me that month and was so grateful! She felt she'd gotten her life back. She had been so scared and sick. It worked for her. She could hardly believe the solution was so simple. We had that condo for three years and we spoke regularly. She continued to have success with the benedryl, too.""

09/24/2011: Missy from Joe, Maryland replies: "Benedryl normally has to be taken every four hours. Look for the feel of it, the calming or settling, the flat footed-ness. 10/02/2010: Tom from Regina, Sk replies: "Linda:

Have you tried the $10 possible solution? It is a simple wristband available supposedly at larger drugstores, no prescription required:
http://www.biobands.com/about.htm

The wristband utilizes acupressure, a natural pressure therapy applied to a specific acupuncture point that controls nausea and vomiting. A small bead embedded in the adjustable band presses down on the P6 (Neiguan) point, located three finger widths above the wrist crease between the tendons of the flexor surface of the forearm, approximately in the area of a watchband. They also go by the name "Sea Bands". They will either work, or they won't! For a list of nutrients and vitamins that may reduce your tinnitus, here is a PDF on Dr. Matthias Rath's site:
http://www4.dr-rath-foundation.org/NHC/cellularhealthresearch.htm
http://www4.dr-rath-foundation.org/pdf-files/cellularhealthseries.pdf
It looks like that list would run into many dollars, even just to try for 4-8 weeks.

For the drug, there are many look-up sites like this one:
http://www.drugs.com/meclizine.html

But unlike what it says to ask your doc for more details, they won't give you that time! Your best bet is ask your local library if they have the PDR DRUG Reference book. It's a giant tome the doc looks in every time they write up a prescription. You can go there and just photocopy the page(s) you need for the drug details.
Or, you can buy your own copy (updated every year):
http://www.amazon.com/PDR-Herbal-Medicines-Thomas-Fleming/dp/1563633612

There has also been for years a HERBAL PDR.

As to the more severe aspects, have you heard of or tried the Epley Procedure?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QikUTAmeE0M&feature=related

There are also now specific variants of it, like here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTzQ4FYK_tY&feature=related

Then there's this more detailed set of procedures called NCR:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuJ0HBs2_JA&feature=rec-LGOUT-real_rn-1r-3-HM

Obviously you would have to find out the cost, and whether it's offered in another clinic closer to you, and even if your health insurance will cover it."

[QUESTION]  05/01/2009: Tavora from Brooklyn, NY: "Though I am directing my questions toward Ted - I am open to hearing from anyone who can possibly share a similar experience or shed light on what I am now calling my "Mystery Diagnosis"....I've posted a couple times before here on EC asking for advice on how to cure an inner ear infection I was told I developed 7 months ago. I received three (3) diagnoses - labyrinthitis, vestibular neuritis and Meniere's Disease (all in this exact order). I have seen numerous doctors - ear, nose and throat, general practitioner, a neurologist and a chiropractor - and done a battery of exams along w/ blood work. Thank God for my background in Biology - becuz I am persistent about doing research and ensuring I try to put the pieces together.

Forgive me for the stretch here but I gotta get this out - in Aug of 2008 - I started experiencing very slight sensations of dizziness and lightheadedness that left me feeling as if I would fall. Not too long after - started feeling a "full" sensation in my right ear - like I had water in it - but didn't know why this was happening. Confused and frustrated - thought it was ear wax - tried to clean it out but no wax. Went to the Dr. to see if it was an infection - no infection. My ears looked healthy. Ok so fast forward and now several weeks/months later - I am beyond the acute phase of "illness" and am dealing with something obviously very chronic. Though I still feel dizzy, my major symptoms are the ear fullness, neck pain, tension in spine and muscles (which by the way when all this started I was experiencing these very strange sensations of something "pulling down" on my spine (think of quick sand) - it was as though i felt like I was carrying lead. Without a doubt, my equilibrium is equally impaired (hence my balance organs are affected) and given that my balance is now a conscious event rather than automatic - I can "feel" a slight misalignment in my lower spine. That is, my left leg is slightly raised (the hip is) and my right leg has a constant tendency to want to bend. I did take two hearing tests...results came back normal (Praise God!) however, now the doctors are telling me they don't know how to help me!! This whole process has changed my life dramatically and has truly impacted everything from my job to my relationship with my loved ones. Through the grace of God, I do have a support system but I strive everyday to maintain my independence. This can be both mentally and physically taxing....but at the same time rewarding.

Somewhere along the way - my nerves have also been affected because I used to and still get this incredible head pressure (like someone has a vice on my temporal lobes). I'll occasionally get tingling sensations along my arms, sometimes right side of face, feet and legs....and persistent with the right ear fullness - I have a submandibular lymph node that is roughly a little less than a centimeter that has yet to go away. I think its because of the chronic inflammation. Don't know. Anyway - I have been searching for answers and have spoken with so many people trying to find a more natural approach rather than taking drugs! I refuse to accept that I simply must live with these symptoms! What??! My neurologist told me to recall anything I did differently last year and in looking back it was both having lost 30 pounds (thru exercise and diet) and had some dental work done (ie root canal, filled two small cavities, x-rays and scaling)

In my research I've narrowed done two things (to which I am investigating) - heavy metal/mercury poisoning (I have several silver fillings in my mouth) and/or spinal problems (in upper cervical neck)...............SO my question to Ted and to anyone else is - does this sound like anything you've come across? Could this be neurological problem or is it really just my sinuses having made my ear malfunction? Where can I start in terms of diet/nutrition by helping myself? I'm so overwhelmed but at the same time hopeful. I am willing to do the work but am not quite sure where to start. I do have to admit that I saw nutritionist about two mths ago who said my colon was backed up in two places (which is possibly causing my liver to not detox well), my adrenals are exhausted and my immune system is not working optimally. Did I mention that I'm a 30 yr old female. He Rx'd a fiber/vegetable supplement, told me to go on a raw food diet for 30 days to alkalize my body and instructed to take licorice root - iodine, high vit C along with transfer x-factor colostrum to build up my immunity. I admit I started everything and the colostrum worked wonders but then i stopped becuz I struggled immensely w/ the diet. I wonder if juicing might work better? Any suggestions Ted? AND - forgot to mention - he thinks the symptoms with my ear are actually more related to my sinuses!

For now - my plan of action for the remainder of the year is to remove the fillings, replace the root canal (which I had completed in June and then 2 mths later - I came down w/ my symptoms) - focus on converting to a vegetarian diet and continue exercising and getting physical therapy for the misalignment in my spine. But in the meantime - can anyone offer any insight?? It is very much appreciated. (So for the lengthy post but thanks for reading nonetheless!)

And "thank you" EC for being such a positive channel through which people can feel confident and empowered about reclaiming their health through God's way!! :0) "

EC: Tavora, we're posting this on the Meniere's page for now under "Remedies Needed". Will send your post to Ted as well.

Please let me know if you find anything that works for you.

06/07/2009: Joyce from Joelton, Tn replies: "Hello Tavora,

Two things that might help. Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is mother nature's diuretic so should help with fluid in the ear. However I believe the FDA recently ruled it be removed from the market making it unavailable so big pharmaceutical company could sell their patented synthetic product and rake in the money. Isn't it wonderful how the FDA is protecting us from big business? (LOL - tongue in cheek)

The other one is from EC. Some one else wrote in that they were having ear problems and dizziness. He remembered having a stomach upset with dizziness before and went and took some ginger (a great remedy for stomach problems) and found that a daily dose of ginger
got rid of his dizziness. If it worked for him, it just might work for you. It if does pass the word on it to other readers of EC."
06/07/2009: Joyce from Joelton, Tn replies: "PS Tavora,

Forgot to mention something you can do for those swollen lymph nodes, paint the skin over those swollen lymph nodes with iodine and they should revert to their normal size."
06/08/2009: Cmatthews from Tampa, FL replies: "Tavora -
I have had a similar experience to yours. Mine started in Dec '07 when I developed fluid on my inner ear from sledding in CO. After a few horrible weeks of dizziness and feeling like I was standing on a rocking boat, the symptoms subsided. But in the Spring of '08 the dizziness and imbalance returned. My symptoms were dizziness, imbalance, lack of coordination and feeling like my head was being "pulled" to one side and extreme fatigue (I slept 10 hours a night!). The doctor said it was allergies and gave my pills and antibiotics which did nothing. I refused to go to any more doctors as I believed all they would do was throw more useless RXs my way. My "gut" feeling was that I had some type of fungus inside my ears/sinuses because occaisionally my ears itched. After scouring Earth Clinic for rememdies and trying everything (and I do mean everything), I have finally found relief with large doses of Vit C (1,000 mg 3xs daily) (Ted's suggestion) and a probiotic to elminate Candida _________This is what worked for me...I hope you find some relief soon as I can completely understand what you are going thru."
06/08/2009: Tavora from Brooklyn, NY replies: "Hi. Thanks so kindly for your remarks. I am still dealing with the imbalance but have now discovered some sort of "growth" underneath the skin (by the canal). I don't know what it is but I feel like its either getting bigger or "spreading" (every time I gently place my finger in right my ear - this the "affected" - the canal opening seems smaller...its hard to describe) I will definitely try the high vitamin c! I am so fed up and ready to move on from this thing! Did your doctors ever tell u that your ears looked fine...or healthy? Has your balance returned to normal? Funny u mention the itching becuz sometimes itches on and off?

Thank you again! :0)"
06/09/2009: Verna from Burley, Idaho replies: "Sounds like "TMJ". It can affect sinuses, teeth, throat, jaw and neck all of the way down the side of shoulder and back. It use to drive people into mental institutions, but now it is recognized as a real condition due to jaw missalignment or lots of dental work through the years and/or grinding of the teeth (stress). It will cause severe depression if not diagnosed. One usually ends up going from doctor to doctor and spending lots of money on tests to find out that every test looks normal. I'm surprised that your dentist hasn't suggested that this could be what is ailing you. Most dentists have informational handouts in their offices about TMJ. I hope this info helps you with the mystery."
06/11/2009: Sara from The Beach, Canada replies: "i have to agree with the TMJ suggestion. your symptoms are very familiar with me. i have had many of them. and it began with a root canal and crown. after 6 months of most of your issues, i had another dentist appointment and mentioned my issues because he asked if there were any changes in my health. he quickly said i had TMJ and fitted me for a deproggramer,(mouthguard) it is now 4 months later and i have a significant improvment in all my issues. one other thing i did was increase my magnesium by taking mag. citrate 300mgs a day in morning. i noticed a real improvement with the pulling of the spine feeling. which i had mostley on my right side of my lower spine. i cant say why it happened to me for sure, i just know the catalyst and the relief. hope this helps. sara"
06/19/2009: Tavora from Brooklyn, NY replies: "I just wanted to say "thank you" to all those who responded to my initial post re: my "mystery diagnosis." I decided to investigate whether my problem could be TMJ related. I spoke with my dentist and he has referred me to see an oral surgeon. I took the advice of the person who recommended taking magnesium citrate. Thank you! I have been supplementing with 400 mg every day for almost two weeks now and my symptoms have alleviated significantly! This tells me I may have a magnesium deficiency. Plus, when I put two and two together -- this makes sense because I used to be a HEAVY, HEAVY soda drinker -- and from all the research I've come across, soda apparently does leach minerals from the body.

I also would like to thank Ted for his recommendation/method for treating TMJ. Though I don't know if I have TMJ - his post re: bruxism set off a huge light bulb in my head. He said bruxism is often related to heavy metal poisoning (I have 5 old amalgam fillings, 3 on the right and 2 on the left) and too much calcium build-up in the muscles. Calcium contracts our muscles - while magnesium relaxes. Seeing as how much better I've been doing since taking the magnesium, this makes even more sense! Not to mention, about 2 years ago, I was told by two different dentists that my back teeth showed signs of grinding and clenching. I am currently attempting the treatment and so far - the body alkalization (1/4 tsp of baking soda and lemon) and magnesium has also made a noticeable difference in my clenching. My jaw is a bit more relaxed and the pain/congestion I used to suffer in my right ear is virtually gone! Granted, I sometimes get these tiny electrical jolts in the ear but I see that as a good thing. Perhaps something is beginning to shift, release or "wake up". But I am so incredibly grateful because the intensity of my imbalance problems are not as severe as they used to be. I now carry around handy little pH strips to test my alkalinity. I'll be back w/ updates re: the removal of my fillings and the heavy metal detox. (ie. Cilantro, lecithin, chlorella, etc.)

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  04/23/2011: Lorhen from Gilbert, Az replies: "Tavora,

I also had the exact symptoms as you. I almost lost my mind trying to find a cure. I had MRIs, CAT scans, blood tests, etc. Finally went to an ENT that specializes in Menieres, had the calorie test and some other visual tests. Positive for bilateral Meniere's disease. He wanted me to take a diuretic medicine but I refused. Did my own research. I can manage the disease but it has not completely gone away. STRESS is a big trigger for me. I like you went all raw and found it too difficult, so now I am mostly vegan with once in a while fish. No dairy ever! A real trigger also.

No medications which is good. I have to really balance my life and never overdo it. I still have occasional bouts of head pressure/slight vertigo. Always have the ear ringing, very loud. But after 9 years of having this it is manageable.

I wish you luck. Oh, I also take magnesium, lemon bioflavenoids, grape seed extract, fish oil, evening primrose oil, a raw multi vitamin, green powder with chlorela and also grow and juice my own wheat grass. The wheat grass gives me so much energy.

Good luck, blessings.

It asks lots of questions to narrow down your search to your specific issues. Patience here is needed as each of us is a little different from others, but homeopathics have been of great relief when vitamins, diet, etc doesn't quite do the trick. It's fast, has absolutely no interactive effects with anything you take. They dissolve under your tongue. The tiny pills have a lactose (milk) base, but l am allergic to milk and never had any issues with them. The only thing you need to do when you ar taking them is to avoid eating or drinking anything except water for 10 min before or after you take them so you don't cancel the effects. It is called abc homeopathy. Also a dot com. Google homeopathy to learn this little known secret. Know also that the more of your ailments match the description, the better it works. They also come in combo styles which are great."
