"Symptoms of a Diseased Liver

The external signs include a coated tongue, bad breath, skin rashes, itchy skin, excessive sweating, offensive body odour, dark circles under the eyes, red swollen and itchy eyes, acne rosacea, brownish spots and blemishes on the skin, foshed facila appearance or excessive facial blood vessels. Other symptoms include jaundice, dark urine, pale stool, bone loss, easy bleeding, itching, small, spider-like blood vessels visible in the skin, enlarged spleen, fluid in the abdominal cavity, chills, pain from the biliary tract or pancrea, and an enlarged gallbladder.

[YEA]  10/11/2011: Peter from Seattle, Wa., Usa: "Alpha Lipoic Acid, along with selenium and milk thistle are a very helpful treatment for liver problems includidng cirrhosis. Burt Berkson, M. D, Ph. D., of Las Cruces, New Mexico has been treating patient with it for decades and has written a book and several monographs on the subject. I was very ill from cirrhosis, had severe ascites, could not walk witihout a cane--and only then a few yards-- and told I had to have a liver transplant or I would be dead in a month or two.

I began taking these subtances orally (600 mg. ALA with breakfast, 300 with dinner, along with selenium and milk thistle) annd immediately began to improve. I then went to Dr. Berkson's clinic and took a course of I.V. Alpha Lipoic Acid from him. It's been two years later and I am still well and able to walk miles, excercise, work and lead a normal life. You can find Dr. Berkson's monographs on line. It saved my life."

10/19/2011: Laura from Weatherford, Texas replies: "What is this stuff and where could I find it? Could you explain a little more detail about how it is suppose to be taken? And is it safe for peoples with hcv?"
11/09/2011: Peter from Seattle, Washington, Usa replies: "Sorry for the delayed response. You can purchase ALA (Alpha Lipoic Acid), Selenium and Milk Thistle at virtually any vitamin store in the U. S. And many other countires as well. I took (and take) 600 mg. ALA with breakfast and 300 with dinner. I also took/take 400 each of selenium and Milk Thistle twice a day with meals. It's a good idea to take a B vitamin if your taking the ALA because it seems to deplete B a bit in its metabolism. Obviously a number of other things help liver health as well including a number of things on this site (good low fat diet, beets, tumeric, castor oil packs, etc.)

ALA is also being praised as a superior anti-oxident by Bruce Ames, Ph. D. Of University of California who may be the most respected researcher of anti-oxidents in the world. For that purpose he recommends you take it 250 mg. Along with 500 mg. Carnitine. They market a commercial mix of the two called Juvenon that Dr. Weil sells on his web site though you could probably buy the items cheaper on your own.

11/25/2011: Anne from San Antonio , Tx replies: "Did this eliminate your ascites or did you have to be tapped also? Did you have edema and was that eliminated also? Because your have used this combination, how are your liver enzymes and blood test results? Please respond asap, as my husband was recently diagnosed as having liver cirrhosis - no biopsy as yet, but has these symptoms. He has been tapped but the ascites comes right back. We need your input."
12/01/2011: Peter from Seattle, Washington replies: "I had severe bloating (ascites) and could only walk a few steps. I was at death's door step. I was "tapped"(paracentisis) about six times--the last time they removed about 7 liters of fluid from my abdomen. The Berkson protocol (Alpha Lipoic Acid, Selenium, and Milk Thistle) worked for me. It did not cure my hepatitis C but all my enzymes improved dramatically along with my health. I went from not being able to walk without a cane to being able to walk 3 miles plus, and reasonably good health. I started to recover within a week or two and went to his clinic in Las Cruces, New Mexico where he administers the ALA intervenously--twice a day. If you type in his name on line (Dr. Burt Berkson) you should come up with some articles as well as the Integrative Medical Clinic of New Mexico. If you are in Texas you are not too far from him."
12/07/2011: Dawn from Milwaukee, Wi replies: "I have not been to a doctor but I know I drink too much and am beginning to worry. I have been reading up on cirrhosis and found that itching is a symptom and I do have that. Every once and a while I do have some pain on my right side. My question is if I take this ALA , Selenium and Milk Thistle now will it help? Also, I vowed to give up drinking during the week but would like to have a few on the weekends, would this stop the ALA, Selenium and Milk Thistle from working?"
12/08/2011: Timh from Louisville, Usa replies: "Dawn, the nutrients you listed will help your liver if you take them.

If you don't have gallstones or hepatitis, then you are several big steps out of the danger zone. In chronic alcohol consumption, the first thing to happen to the liver is the buildup of fat. If fatty liver continues it will become enlarged and cirrhotic. If you eat well and don't drink severely and you do take a good multivitamin/min, you should not have progressive fatty liver.

As for supplements, zinc is also critical for alcohol control. Choline and Carnitine are the two main fat burners, but all b-vit are good and augment the C & C. Also you must have lots of the omega 3's in your diet as alcohol depletes them."

12/08/2011: Dawn from Milwaukee, Wi replies: "So, It's okay for me to have a few drinks on the weekends as long as I take all of these supplements and this will not damage my liver any more? What about the itching and the pain in my abdomen? I used to have 4-5 glasses of wine each night, now only on weekends, could this have caused the fatty liver you discussed?"
12/09/2011: Timh from Louisville, Usa replies: "Dawn, any or all the nutrients will greatly help your liver regardless of your past or current lifestyle. Try any or all these supplements and if the pain & itching is your liver, it should subside. If the pain & itching is severe, you may want to have your liver checked out by a physician. A parasite infestation or some kind of infection may be causing these symptoms, so also consider herbals for that possibility.

Report back as to your progress."

12/09/2011: Olavo from Latin America, La replies: "I too enjoy drinking a little too much and I do struggle to cut back. I have found vitamin therapy (especially niacin) and water cure (thirst was triggering cravings) helped a bunch! I suggest you read the entries related to alcoholism in doctoryourself.com."
12/19/2011: Jesse from Milwaukee, Wi replies: "What brand and/or where to buy? Alpha Lipoic Acid"
02/22/2012: Jules from Palmetto, Florida replies: "So I have read all the lists of the past couple of months and want to know if any of you writers are still finding any remedies.. Better, what did or did not work, ect... I was just diagnosed."
05/09/2012: Gokhan from Istanbul, --, Turkey replies: "Dear Peter, thanks information you gave... I am from Turkey. My mother has Liver cirrhosis. I read lots of good things about Dr. Burt Berkson's protocol. I want to try ALA, Selenium, Sylmarian with B complex on my mother. But I am confused about dose... I will try to give 100mg ALA 3x in a day (total 300mg in a day). Than go up to 300mg ALA 3x in a day (total 900mg in a day). is it reasonable ? when we must stop to give ALA?

ps. I found that, Dr. Berkson recommends Metabolic Maintenance, Carlsons, and Biotech vitamin manufacturers. One of the interview he says dose about ALA.. "he has never gone above 15 mg/kg. For primates it takes about 90 mg/kg to kill a primate."

[YEA]  06/24/2008: Michelle from Houston, TX: "I take a daily concoction of 1 tsp ACV, 4 ounces of unsweetened cranberry juice, 12 ounces of water, and half of a squeezed lemon. It's part of an eating plan and it's said to help cleanse the liver. All I know about it after seven days is that I feel generally better. I am prone to UTI's so the cranberry is definitely helping, and I've lost 4 pounds in eight days. (Of course, I'm following a prescribed plan of eating all natural foods and eating every three hours). It's a bitter drink, but I'm still drinking it!"

AYURVEDIC REMEDIES

01/16/2012: Tenny from Kochi, India: "300 gms of aloe vera-washed n chopped

1/2 ltr of honey

4tbs of brandy

Beat all this well , and refrigerate if required. Have 1 tbs an hr before each meal. That would be 3 times per day, get the mix to room temp before ingesting it. This course is to be had for 10 days and then a 10 day gap should be taken. Ayurveda says that this mix is so strong that there is a tendency for it to do away with all the good bacteria in the colon as well. The 10 day gap is for the replenishment of this bacteria, which are an essential part of your gastrointestinal tract. Continue this as long as the problem persists. My mom's been using this for the last 7mths. She has stage4 breast cancer. She's been having it along with the graviola fruit whenever available and tablets whenever scarce. She also has soya milk and cod liver capsules in her diet."

CARBONATED WATER, LEMON JUICE, SEA SALT

YEA

[YEA]  08/30/2009: Taylor from Tollhouse, Ca: "Stage 4 cirrohsis of the Liver

Internal Body Cleanser,disenfectant & Rejuvenator
Water (Carbonated Spring, mineral) it has to be carbonated.
Pure Lemon Juice ( from lemons, a lemon squeeze, bottled 100% lemon juice)
Sea Salt

If you are not a fan of the salty food this may take some getting use to.This elixer is a rejuvenator for the a sick, dying liver. Not for the healthy.

Mix sea salt into water in large glass, until it is salty to the taste but still drinkable add lemon juice until you taste salty lemon. Drink it slowly. First time you drink it, it will give you severe diarhea. Drink it slowly & have 2 to 3 glasses a day.

Warning: I took lots of slack from the family. The medical professionals won't like the idea either. I knew. I just knew after much research on cirrohsis, that a very sick liver will begin to recover slowly at first & then your blood tests will begin to come back with much better numbers in the various catagories they check for. This is not a quick fix but is meant to be done over a long period of time. You will see an improvement after about 8 weeks. In between drinking this eleixer make sure you drink plenty of water. Eat lots of vegetsbles, fruit & the leaner meats.Stay away from breads, tortillas & eat sweets in strict moderation especially at first.

You need to take care of yourself & make your health a priority.Something that has probably been missing from your life. I have to take monthly blood tests now 4 years after I was diagnosed with stage 4 cirrohisis. Say goodbeye to any alcohol addicition, if that's why you got this terrible disease.Your liver is sick, slow & lazy. This elixer will wake it up again.Your blood tests should begin to improve in their results within a few short months.. I went from being on the transplant list, to being moved to hepatology & now a family practitioner for monthly visits & blood tests. I have now had quite a few blood tests come back near normal except for slight anemia.I continue with lasix & spirolactone, also laculose although as time passes in less doses. I once thought myself fortunate to survive 2 years after my terminal diagnosis but now going on 5 yeras, I'm no longer consider myself terminal in any sense of the word. I do not have an expiration date any longer!"

I have been experiencing the following: Swollen belly, dramatic weight loss, nausea, blurry vision, sharp paines in the liver area, extreme migranes, havent been officially diagnosed but symptoms started 7yrs ago.. Did you experience any of these and what else should I do more of or eliminate from my diet? Any feed back would be appreciated. Thanks.."
10/07/2011: Yankee from Houston, Tx, Usa replies: "You don't say how much of salt or lemon you add to the carbonated water. Just as a healthy tonic, I made this up with a tall glass of the carb. water, then I added one teaspoon of sea salt and 1/2 juiced lemon. It was delicious and I could drink it all day; love the salty sweet. But I'm curious... Why do you say the doctors won't like you drinking this. Is it bad for you? Can I take in too much salt this way? should I limit it? Also, am I even adding enough salt and lemon to be of good use? And what, since your article does not say, is the benefit of the salt? Thanks so much."
11/07/2011: Anglii from Edmonton, Alberta replies: "A swollen belly is ascites and you should never take sodium (salt) for ascites. You need to follow a low sodium diet."
12/09/2011: Ann from Deer Park, Wa replies: "Thank you for the formula. I've been taking one glass after meals and it seems to help my digestion. I have also made a drink of salt, ACV and seltzer water that I drink a couple of hours before bed. After reading more about ACV and the need to add baking soda for best results, I am thinking of adding that to my nightly drink."
01/11/2012: Rachellelvn from Covina, Ca/usa replies: "Sodium is only bad in its MANMADE form, sea salt is natural including all its naturally occuring elements included, it thins the bile, which is the livers way of detoxing, this is why it helps."

CASTOR OIL

YEA

[YEA]  03/09/2008: Brooke from Montgomery, TX: "I have always used Castor Oil Packs to strengthen my liver and kidneys. The liver can grow itself back if you take the time to do it.

You get cold pressed castor oil, wool flannel, a heating pad and a piece of plastic - I use a garbage bag. There are sites online that will explain it in details.

I put the castor oil into a sealed container with the wool flannel and shake it up. You want the castor oil to e dripping from it slowly. I then put the container into the microwave for about 15 or 20 seconds - just to get it heated up. I then put a couple of towels onto my bed or couch and lay down on them. Then I take the wool flannel and put it on my stomach. If you are trying to heal the liver, put it a little bit more over your liver, if you are trying to heal the kidneys, put it over that area. Then I put the garbage bag onto th flannel and then the heating pad - all the way on high (or as high as you can handle). Leave it on for at least one hour and meditate on what you are trying to achieve. After you are finished, wipe your self off with a mixture of Baking soda and water,to get your skin back to the proper ph.

Do this for 4-5 days on and then leave off for the remaining days.

The is a good book calld Edgar Cayce and the Palma Christi. It tells of all the wonderful things that Castor Oil (the Palma Christi) does!"

Replies
01/02/2009: Lois from Portland, ME replies: "I am a little confused on the directions for the castor oil. I would presume the garbage bag would burn with the heating pad. Please go into more detail. Thank you."

EC: We prefer using a hot water bottle for castor oil packs rather than a heating pad. We place a thin kitchen towel in between the plastic bag and the hot water bottle to prevent scalding!

[YEA]  02/26/2010: Faithinhealing from Forest Park, Ohio replies: "Castor oil has greatly improved my liver function! I've been using the castor oil packs for over a month nightly. I've noticed that the swelling has gone down dramatically, and my appetite is returning, and I'm beginning to lose weight. I also have candida and I notice that this really helps to dump the yeast. It's actually very relaxing so I do it right before bed. Castor oil is very inexpensive and can be found in the laxative section of your pharmacy."
10/16/2010: Faithinhealing from Forest Park, Ohio replies: "I just wanted to add that you can also add SLICES OF GINGER to the flannel and castor oil... I just put the castor oil on the flannel and the ginger on my skin and cover... It detoxifies the liver in better with the GINGER!!!"

CHOLESTATIC PRURITUS

She's been tested for everything since she was 6 months old that's all they can find. She's on Rifampin for itching. I don't think it's working anymore. She and I now are up all night from her scratching. She misses alot of days from school. Her school clothes, sheets, panties and fingernails are bloody from her scratching. She cries in her sleep. This has been going on for the past 3 years. The doctors said there's nothing they can do. PLEASE HELP!!!!"

Orthomolecular experts believe that many serious health conditions are the result of some individuals having unusually high requirements (i.e. , metabolic abnormalities) for specific vitamins or minerals. Depending on the regulations where you live, a naturopathic physican may be able to try IV-administered high doses of the vitamin(s) in question. Try a Google search for your region's naturopathic association and look for someone who mentions orthomolecular medicine as an area of practice."
03/10/2012: Stefanie from Palm Springs, Ca replies: "I myself went through a horrific battle with pruritus (and jaundice); I finally figured out that it can be controlled with diet; I stopped eating everything except fruits and vegetables and it stopped. But of course I lost 20 lbs, but it was such a relief. I was so skinny I couldn't look at myself; I finally got over my problem, which turned out to be caused by drug I was given (macrobid/nitrofurentoin). Now I am back to normal."
04/03/2012: Minkxy from Brooklyn, Ny replies: "Hi. I can"t speak for sure about the vitamin Def in her liver. Check Dr. Group's Global Healing Center site. As something that may soothe her skin, I recommend you try a vitamin C shower filter. Maybe she could drink that water also. I have one and recommended it to a friend who has had dandruff and his head would turn bright red, itchy and painful after shower. It became a trip of horror each shower. All dandruff shampoos didn't help. He tried the filter and INSTANTLY pain, itching, redness, dandruff was gone. He has been using it for 2 weeks, with natural olive oil soap to clean, and thinks he is in heaven. And told his 3 brothers across the ocean about it.

This may well soothe her, it costs about $40, maybe $8 shipping. Money well spent and I hope you get it. God Bless"

04/03/2012: Minkxy from Brooklyn, Ny replies: "The filter neutralizes chlorine and such. It is great for city dwellers. You can look up Ben Fuchs as he is good on specific nutrition."
05/05/2012: Missg from Richmond, Pe/canada replies: "Hi, my father, has a rare liver disease called primary billary cirrosis. His mother and two sisters also had it. His itching was really bad, similar to your daughters. Also, his mom and sisters seemed to be worse. He takes urisol (that spelling is incorrect). His itching is almost gone. The dr did perscribe an anti itch drug, as reactine did not help and is harmful to the liver. He hasn't had to take the anit itch drug in almost a year. The urisol pushes the bile out of the ducts. I hope this helps. It is agony watching them suffer so much. One of my aunts used to get her husband to tie her hands so she couldn't scratch, once she started scratching she couldn't stop."

COFFEE

11/03/2008: Neili : "Hi Ted,

I just came across this webpage, which discusses using coffee amongst other things to help promote bile flow.
http://www.itmonline.org/arts/chlorogenic.htm

I love the moderate use of coffee but abstain from it as most complementary health practitioners, including Traditional Chinese Medicine say to avoid it. I'd love to hear your feelings on drinking coffee when the liver / gallbladder are impaired and when there is also already a danger that the body is too acidic. Thanks and bless you.

Neil"

Replies
11/03/2008: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Dear Neil:

The article does not directly deal with the real cause of the issue. Gallstones are formed not from chlorogenic acid deficiency, but it is formed from eating very oily foods that exceeds the liver's capacity to emulsify the fatty food. When this happens fat collesce to form tiny balls of fat which form gallstones, along with excessive calcium. But it is also true that excessive fats lead to liver cirrhosis, or a fatty liver. The issue is that Western dietary habits eat too much fatty food and the body simply accumulates fat. While it is true that chlorogenic acid did reduce gallstone, the sad story is it shouldn't happen in the first place if excessive fatty foods weren't eaten at all. Time and time again I mentioned the use of granulated lecithin taken along with food to emulsify the fat, avoid the use of vegetable oils in cooking, fatty foods, and sugar. Chlorogenic acid real action is it prevents the body from increasing blood glucose quickly enough, or something like sugar spikes, when this happens the liver has to overwork and store them or tuck them and converted into fats before it damages the body system. So the issue hence becomes controlling blood sugar, and chromium, which I found can reduce weight, and it doesn't have to be chromium picolinate. I found out a much cheaper chromium chloride works quite effectively in reducing weight, blood sugar to more normal levels and even cured hirsute both men and women, within weeks. Coffee really have a problem of gout and increased uric acid.

A major component of bile is actually water, bicarbonates, and salt. The baking soda and water with sea salt is also a major remedy I have always post almost as consistently. There is an urban legend about not drinking water while eating. This urban legend caused a major problem, it tends to put stress on to the liver with insufficient water, excessive salt, and lack of bicarbonates leading to gallstones, despite the fact that the liver is an efficient organ in emptying the liquids BEFORE it begins to digest. This is why water goes right through the stomach fast and then you have an urge to urinate within a short time.

The issue of bicarbonates is one of the reason why alkalization remedy was chosen: to support the liver function as well as granulated lecithin to emulsify the fat. That alone isn't sufficient, metabolic acidosis, excessive sugar intake causes problems too. If the body's pH is acid, calcium in the bones dissolve and blood serum calcium is high, clogging up the heart, causing stroke, clogging the liver causing If the food has excessive oils, in particular vegetable oils which biochemically becomes cholesterol, as well as excessive eating of meats leads to cholesterol. People actually don't normally think chicken to be high in cholesterol of they don't eat the skins. This thinking is wrong. Cholesterol is found just as high level in white chicken meat as it is found in any meats. Only eating more green vegetables can people lower the cholesterol. I once had an extreme case of high blood cholesterol and had trouble with reducing this issue so a more radical steps was needed to simply avoided all pork, beef and chicken as an emergency measures eating only vegetables for about a month, the figures within a month was within normal parameters. As to the goodness cholergenic acid, it is a lot simpler to just take chinese herbs high in cholergenic acid (chrysanthemum flower, lonicera flowers (jinyinhua), ucommia bark and gardenia fruit which has 20% cholergenic acid) taken ocassionally without the added risk of gout, acidosis, caffeine addiction, and dehydration associated with drinking coffee. Women get more gallstone then men because they keep going into weight crashing diets which dehydrate the body, increase the blood fats, causing gallstones when the blood becomes too concentrated and bile is too concentrated too.

Ted"

03/10/2012: Stefanie from Palm Springs, Ca replies: "Gallstones are not formed from fatty foods; they can be formed from too much calcium, too much progesterone, and disorders in the liver concerning bile or cholesterol, etc. Women do not get gallstones because of diets, they get them more than men because of progesterone from birthcontrol pills, from pregancy, from hormone treatment. I am a nutritionist who eats healthy, sans mammal meats and dairy, and I had 44 gallstones that I extracted naturally myself using the gallstone flush. They formed because I was on too high a dose of progesterone."

[YEA]  08/27/2011: Amy from Moscow, Id, Usa: "I used some of the information in two of Dr Sandra Cabot's books to help clean my liver. 6 years ago, my liver enzymes were 3 times higher than normal and an ultrasound showed a fatty liver and 2 large gallstones. I added carrot, celery, and parsley juice to my breakfast along with a large glass of fresh lime juice/water for a month. I cut out red meat and dairy for about 4 months and took vitamin E, milk thistle, and taurine daily for about 6 months. 9 months after starting it, my liver enzymes were in the middle of the normal range and I haven't done anything to cleanse my liver since then. 6 years later, my liver enzymes are 10% of what they were when I started the supplements and juicing and I haven't had a gallbladder attack either. GENERAL FEEDBACK

10/04/2011: Sherry from Burnsville, Minnesota: "I discovered our whole body is circulatory, over 80,000 miles of blood vessels and the LIVER is loaded with them also and with it being a cleansing mechanism of the body, if it gets sick, toxic and unhealthy this causes a back-up into the body. 2010, when I almost lost my twin sister, I got blessed to hear about a 37 yr old with 80 yr old blood vessels and now he is 74 with blood vessels of a 12 yr old. You can bet his liver is clean. This is a Doctor and it is validated by Nobel prize and both the doctor and a heart institute use it on every single patient. My sister lives today with no more congestive heart failure and is without meds. Be blessed"

07/05/2011: Diamond from Salisbury, Usa: "I found at a very young age that my liver has always been at risk; I found recently after many years of pain in lower back and being way under weight but severe swelling through out my whole body, was caused from mold, I was also surprised to find that 90% of the USA has chances of mold build up because of the continuous dampness year round causes this mold, the worse case scenario is that doctors nation wide are treating it as an infection which adds insult to injury because most antibiotics are made from mold.

Recently I almost had a heart attack because the antibiotic ciproflaxine made my chest feel like it had been crushed. I think from now on God willing I plan on not seeing a doctor unless absolutely needed. I later found that I had neck surgery that was not needed. How sad a world we live in.

I seriously feel that it's herbs that are holding me together and trusting totally in my own instincts and this website. Thank you Ted and other's that have shared their much needed input, it's the glue that holds us all together.

God bless us all, Peace"

I proved this, when I was sent to Colombia, South America with the Red Cross for 7 months. I live in NY and had asthma that worsened with 9/11. I was allergic to everything, so many foods and always felt sick and not really strong, especially when I hit 39. Within my first month in Colombia, I no longer had to use my asthma inhalers, or was allergic to so many things. I was eating fruits off trees all day long and lost over 25 lbs. I was so happy and healthy. Upon my return to NY, I slowly deteriorated and within 4 months I had my first asthma attack again. I thought I had been cured, so much that I wasn't even carrying an inhaler and had to rush to the e.r. I have since then considered getting my degree and since I am bilingual moving down to South America and living life, not just surviving like I feel we do here in the United States, unfortunately. This is a great country, and I have served it, but it is not serving me. Norma"
11/06/2011: Linda from Galax, Va replies: "I used to have asthma really bad and had to use a inhaler quite a few times a day. When I started perimenopause I had an allergic reaction to Chinese food and ended up in the hospital getting a breathing treatment and put on steroids. Later I found out I was allergic to MSG. Well, as you know MSG is in so many foods but I was determined to not eat it any longer so I wouldn't end up in the hospital again. After 3 months, I wasn't having attacks as often. After 1 year I didn't need an inhaler unless I had a respitory infection. I had less sinus infections. It has been 5 years now. I can't tell you how wonderful it feels not to have to use an inhaler or feel like you can't breathe. I wish they would take MSG out of food as I believe this is why so many children have asthma now. It's a shame the FDA allows this."

LIVER CANCER

06/27/2011: Sarah from Carrollton, Texas, Usa: "My husband has liver metastasis; his oncologist said that he couldn't do anything more (thank God). We are doing the Bruess cancer cure fast right now. My husband has fasted for two weeks on this Bruess diet

I am concerned because his liver seems to be getting harder to the touch and he has been jaundice for three weeks, and his urine is dark. I am wondering if the extreme fast of nutritious fermented juices and teas has detoxed him too intensely, and his liver is very stressed. Have you had any liver cancer sufferers who have contacted you? I would like to get some advice (I'm not expecting you to cure my husband, just some good advice for a distressed liver).

Respectfully, Sarah"

06/28/2011: Fan from Pasadena, California replies: "Sarah, hang in there! Read Suzanne Sommers book "Knockout". Its all about how to treat and cure cancer without using the terrible drugs and worthless treatment that mainstream doctors push on people with cancer. Natural methods really work! Good luck-read the book!!!!"
06/28/2011: Teru from Paris, France replies: "Sarah, I read some time ago about the Gerson therapy and he said that when the body is detoxing too fast the liver have problems, so you have to do coffee enemas to help the liver. He suggest like 5 enemas every day. Hope your husband get well."
06/28/2011: Debbie from Melbourne, Australia replies: "Sarah if you google Rene Caisse and read about her story. She cured people of cancer with Essiac (her surname backwards). I have watched youtube videos of her as well. In them she mentions that often the tumors would harden before they softens and heals

This from the attached link:

"Through her work with cancer patients, Caisse observed that Essiac broke down nodular masses to a more normal tissue, while greatly alleviating pain. Many patients would report an enlarging and hardening of the tumour after a few treatments. Then the tumour would start to soften. People also frequently reported a discharge of large amounts of pus and fleshy material. Masses of diseased tissue were sloughed off in persons with breast, rectum, and internal cancers. After this process, the tumour would be gone."

I think drinking aloe vera juice would also help your husband as would spirulina and chorella."

06/28/2011: Paulo from Brazil replies: "I would look into the Gerson protocol but I think you should research how to properly take organic coffee enemas as soon as possible. I think they can possibly aid at this stage. I would be careful with any kind of drastic detox such as a fast because your husband right now does not have a functioning liver (our "filter"). Coffee enemas will stimulate the liver to dump some of its toxic overload directly into your bowels without making it circulate back into the blood system. Do some research first though, call the Gerson Institute for help.

Best of luck!"

08/10/2011: Ron from Dallas, Tx replies: "Sarah, given that your husband has liver metastasis, more than likely his liver and the rest of the body is/was overburdened for quite awhile before finally ending up in this condition and is probably not working too well at the moment. Also given that the detoxification teas you are drinking are probably putting extra strain on an already over loaded liver. I definitely agree with others that a coffee enema would be very beneficial.

I just performed my second liver cleanse following protocol by Andreas Moritz in 'Liver & Gallbladder Miracle Cleanse'. I instantly feel better after each cleanse followed a couple of days later by a coffee enema which can be done quite easily at home. Livingsuperfoods.com has simple, easy to follow instructions on coffee enema.

Hang in there and hope your husbands gets well."

09/16/2011: Naynay from Lodi, Ca replies: "Sarah,

It is so very important while doing a cleanse so intense you should help aid the liver in the dumping of toxins, especially if it is already damaged and sluggish. I am on the gerson therapy and all the juicing and fruits and veggies pull toxins that have been stored in your cells for years.. They acually starve the cancer cells make them sick and die to be filtered out.

You MUST do organic coffee enemas. If not, the overload of toxins and cancer breakdown can reabsorb or even worse cause coma or death. The enzymes in coffee, known as palmitates, help the liver carry away the toxins in bile acid. The coffee is absorbed into the hemorrhoidal vein, and then it is taken up to the liver by the portal vein. With the bile ducts dilate, bile carries toxins away to the gastro-intestinal tract. I have just been doing the enemas for a few weeks and this is the first time in a couple years my liver hasnt felt pain.

Please look on youtube -watch The Beautiful Truth and Dying to have known.. You cant put a price on the information in those documentaries. I wish the best to you and your husband on his healing journey!"

12/28/2011: Robert Henry from Ten Mile, Tn Usa replies: "DESERT, you are wasting your time with some of these birds. Dang , she posted the electrical schematic for you to build yourself. I bought one off the net from a fellow down in Alabama because she did not sell them.

I know I have Demodex Mites and it is all I can do to keep them under control. I have written about this several times. If you buy into what Clarks says then you should investigate CEDSA. 12/28/2011: Desertpunky from Socaldesert, Usa replies: "Sarah: Please be objective and open-minded and read Dr. Hulda Clark's "A Cure for all Cancers". Dr. Clark isn't mentioned much in the EarthClinic website or maybe not enough. She was a brilliant woman and her research in what cancer is from makes all the sense in the world. 02/13/2012: Michael from Edmonton, Canada replies: "Hi, Sarah; I am an undergraduate student in biology. I am not a doctor but one of the focuses of my studies has been several medical mushrooms that are used traditionally in Chinese herbal medicine to fight cancer. They have since been validated by every scientific study that has ever looked into them, which is hundreds.

Your husband needs to immediately obtain a supply of as many of these fungi as possible and take them regularly. They are not necessarily cheap, although some can be wildcrafted for free if you can identify them, but they are a far better bet than chemo and cheaper besides.

Ganoderma lucidum 'Reishi or ling chih', or Ganoderma applanatum 'Artist's conk' (much cheaper than true reishi but with the same medical effects. If you know what you are looking for you can probably pick it off trees in your nearest forest, I do all the time. ) This mushroom has shown strong abilities to fight cancer (through about 8 or 9 different mechanisms) but also to protect the liver from toxicity caused by cisplatin chemotherapy.

Inonotus obliquus 'Chaga'. This mushroom grows only on birch trees and the tea made from it is associated with extremely low cancer rates among peasants in Eastern Europe who were too poor to drink tea instead.

Lentinula edodes 'Shiitake'. This one is pretty expensive unfortunately and he would need to be eating it as close to every day as he can.

Pleurotus ostreatus 'Oyster mushroom'. Has demonstrated very very strong medicinal abilities in many tests. Cheaper than shiitake.

Grifolia frondosa 'Maitake'. Same story as the above, more expensive.

Any one of these will help against cancer, and the more you combine the better your husband's chances will be. Read the book "Mycelium Running" by Paul Stamets and any doubts will be dispelled, which is important for any therapy.

Good luck;

Michael."

REMEDIES NEEDED

QUESTION

04/17/2012: Robsimo from Sydney, Nsw, Australia: "Hi All, What a great community this is. I hope you can help me.

My Dad has been diagnosed with primary sclerosing Cholangitis and has a liver infection which requires the use of IV antibiotics. He has been on this for a month or so and I see his condition deteriorating. He has scarring and growths in both ducts including the primary bile duct.

He is staying in hospital and I see the food they are serving him isn't helping either. It's so infuriating to see them serve hospital food (yesterday was corn beef and cheese cake) to a person who is operating on 25% liver function. They plan to operate and cut out part of his liver to relieve the blockage in the ducts.

Has anyone out there had anything similar to this happen to them and if so, what would you suggest I do? I am well aware that he needs to have an alkaline diet and be taking liver supporting supplements like milk thistle, dandelion and such. Is there anything specific about PSC that requires a specific protocol and how to relieve the infection naturally? I have searched the web to no avail.

Thank you all. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Rob"

01/17/2012: Tina from Houston, Usa replies: "Please try drinking FRESH organic green vegetable juice when you wake up each morning. It makes a world of a difference and your lab work will prove with better results.

Juice

1 full celery

1 cucumber

handful parsley

small piece ginger

juice of 1 lemon

It is imperative that you use a juicer so that the pulp is not consumed during the consumption. You can use the pulp in soup broth or lasagna type dishes later to add 'bulk' but the liver gets seriously cleansed withOUT the pulp and fiber.

You will notice a difference within a month."

01/18/2012: Francisca from Zug, Switzerland replies: "B, the first thing you should check is whether your cholesterol is really high! Nowadays they lower the levels more and more in order to get more people into medication! Be careful....... And it is known that cholesterol is needed for the body to function properly. If you get older and they lower your cholesterol the chances are that you will get Alzheimer's as your level of cholesterol in the brain lowers with the age anyway. And, did you know that the women who live the longest as a rule have higher cholesterol levels? I reviewd a couple of books on the subject in the Book Review page, maybe worth reading one or two? On no account take statins!

My father-in-law in the UK was perfectly well with the cholesterol medication he was taking! One day he was told that due to new rules the medication was going to be doubled! Makes you think.... But he just accepted it, too bad...... Bear in mind that the limits have been lowered more and more over the years, the same goes for blood pressure! There are even charts already showing 0% cholesterol which actually means that you would be dead! And, if you do your research you will find out that if you eat less cholesterol your liver will make more so unless your levels are really abnormally high, and I mean high, be careful with what they prescribe or trying to lower them! Maybe better seek some advice from a holistic doctor...."

01/01/2012: Oscar from Syracuse, New York, Usa replies: "Dear Leelahadar, I very much recommend at least trying cranberry juice. It will NOT harm you and very well be just what is called for with any urinary tract infection. I had a chronic urinary tract infection. I only have one kidney by the way. Anyway the urologist I was seeing had tried all the anti-biotics with no improvement. He told me to try: one cup of pure cranberry juice taken three times a day. In one week this infection I had been plauged with for about three years was gone. This is pure cranberry juice and NOT the so called cranberry juice cocktails wich have very little cranberry juice in them. This worked for me and in about one week when all the anti-biotics failed to work. It is a time honored treatment for urinary tract infections. The principals at work have been well documented, verified in clinical studies. I still drink some cranberry juice about every week or so to protect the one kidney I have left. Give it a try. It will not harm anyone to at least give it a try....Oscar"

11/06/2011: Kelly from Whitewater, Colorado: "I went into the hospital a few months ago as I was told they needed to remove my gallbladder. During the surgery they found extensive damage and scarring on my liver. At about the same time I had been having monthly blood draws with another doctor as she noticed low white blood cell count which continued to drop.

I have had months of tests and they have come to the conclusion that I am a few years away from liver falure and needing a transplant. I was then told that I will not qualify for a liver due to the fact that I have two auto immune blood diseases. They are destroying my white blood cells and platelets. I am also diabetic and have severe arthritis. Where do I start?"

Replies
11/07/2011: Timh from Louisville, Usa replies: "Kelly, I can certainly sympothize with you as I was once similar to your condition. After a badly needed gallbladder cleanse, I had to repeat the cleanse every two weeks as my liver was so damaged. I finally stabolized with Milk Thistle Seed. 3 yrs latter I was diagnosed with aplastic anemia / pancytopenia , then myleophistic leukemia. Luckily I survived somewhat intact. A decade plus later I am still disabled despite alternative treatment and nutrition therapy.

Remove all chemicals, perfumes etc. From house and body. Use high-end air & water purification in your home.

If you are totally new to alternative med. and nutrition therapy, first go to Jon Barron website and download his book Lessons From Miracle Doctors and sign up for his news letter.

For now, start taking a good whole food multi. , Any or all the fallowing herbs for liver health: Milk Thistle Seed, Dandelion Root, Artichoke Leaves, Beet Root (or simply eat Beets) Burdock, Yellowdock. Eat cooked chicken or calf liver once weekly. Take Raw Liquid Liver Extract daily, plus Soy Lecithin w/ addition Choline/Inositol. Join the health club and do some sauna/steam for detox. Do colon cleanse (outlined in book). Get lots of good omega 3's in diet or suppliment fish oil, flax oil, evening primrose oil. Also Ester C w/ Bioflavinoids and herbs for immune support. Healthy diet (low sat. Fat, limit sugar, lots-a green foods) etc. Astragalus Root for bone marrow.

Oil Pulling and Cold Showers will provide substantial rejuvination of your entire body.

Be aggressive in self-education & care and you have a good chance of avoiding the worst, but the long-term prognoses can be as challenging as the accute phase.

Hope this helps and good luck. Update your condition / progress."

11/07/2011: Oscar from Syracuse, New York, Usa replies: "Dear Kelly, Exactly what are the two auto-immune diseases you referred to? If they are lipid coated viral diseases including the AIDS virus and hepatitis C there is evidence that the compound known as BHT [ butylated hydroxytoluene ] may be able to help you. There are some other viral diseases BHT has been shown to be effective at least for some people.

The more specific you can be, the better your chances are of finding some helpful advice in this forum. I had hepatitis C with a failing liver back in 1997. The BHT worked for me....Oscar"

10/02/2011: David from Springfield, Tn, United States: "Dear Advisors,

My mother is 82 and has several illnesses, the most recent of which is liver failure. She has had many diseases over the years and has been prescribed so many medications that her liver is about to die from abuse. She never was a drinker. She recently turned yellow from jaundice and her urine turned brown. She was admitted for surgery 5 days ago to remove her gall bladder. Her liver is now black, according to the surgeon, and he gives her no hope. Even he admits that all of her various medications over time have killed her liver.

Although this is not an exhaustive list, she has congestive heart failure, diabetes (recently diagnosed), very painful debilitating arthritis in her shoulders, and presently, a bladder infection. She has had a weight problem since her mid-forties and has had both hips replaced in the past 3 years. At this point, she can no longer walk and she is either sitting or lying down. She can no longer use her walker, as her arthritic shoulders hurt too much to support herself.

Her spirits are still good and she's a real trooper. Please help me to help get her back to better health.

Thanks so much, David"

10/02/2011: Bess from Calgary, Alberta, Canada replies: "Hi David from Springfield - My Dad suffered from liver problems when he took statins for high cholesterol (he has since stopped taking them). To alleviate the pain, he took 3 liver cleansing pills a day. The brand he uses is Liv-Tone but there are many others available online or in health food stores. He chose that one because it was readily available in the small town where he lives.

The combined active ingredients in the daily 3 pills are:

Turmeric rhizome (1080 mg)

Artichoke leaves (4:1) (450 mg)

Dandelion root (4:1) (360 mg)

Milk thistle extract (80% silymarin) (96 mg)

His liver problems were not as advanced as your Mom's are but it might provide her with a bit of relief. My Dad is almost 90 years old now and, since the problems with taking the statins, he refuses to take any prescription drugs. He has become healthier since he "fired" his doctor!

Also, castor oil packs can assist congested livers. See some testimonials under Earth Clinic's liver damage page:

http://www.earthclinic.com/CURES/liver_damage.html

I would also start making green smoothies for her. I use a blender (easier than a juicer) and throw in some baby greens, cucumbers, frozen fruit, and coconut milk or water. As she becomes accustomed to the taste (my Dad refuses to eat or drink anything green - sad but true), you can add more variety of greens and use less fruit (since she is diabetic). Add about 1/4 teaspoon Celtic or Himalayan salt to the mixture. Most older people are dehydrated and drinking water alone does not necessarily hydrate them. This drink definitely will.

The smoothies provide easily digestible nourishment, all sorts of vitamins and minerals and, of course, the ever-important hydration.

Start slowly - give her time to get used to the taste and see how well she tolerates them. Add water if she finds them too thick. Smoothies would be good for you, too. So many care-givers neglect themselves when taking care of a loved one.

A good multi (preferably liquid) and B12 in sublingual lozenges or a spray may help give her energy. Stay away from processed foods and anything with sugar/artificial sweeteners, trans-fat, etc.

A massage with magnesium oil can help painful joints and it's very relaxing. It's giving her magnesium transdermally, bypassing the liver.

Is she still taking the medications? Can you visit an alternative doctor (naturopath or osteopath) instead of the conventional ones who give her toxic drugs and then say there is no hope?

My prayers go out to you and your Mom. Her good spirits will go a long way to her recovery. Bless you - take care. Bess"

I understand that you are frightened, but no one can hope to prescribe a treatment without knowing the cause of the disorder. You say you have a liver disease. There are many liver diseases. The only safe thing I can think of is to drink some distilled water and take a regular type B-complex vitamin. NOT some mega dose of anything. Also eat a healthy diet and avoid excessive amounts of sugar and salt.

I have no idea of what is wrong with you. Those measures are at least safe ones. Also do some form of exercise. Can you still walk ? Some exercise will help get things moving inside you, your blood circulating. You need to see a doctor Sarah and soon....Oscar"
