[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] Jay from Pueblo, Co writes: "I am a 67 year old male. I have had Lichens since about age 50. It started with extreme pain in the anal area. It was so severe I used a linament intended for livestock for relief. It was not diagnosed until 3 years ago, and my GP and Dermatologist seemed baffled about the whole thing. I don't think I can describe how painful this condition has been, but at times it felt like I had a razor blade between my buttocks. I have been thru all the steroid creams etc. With no effect. About a year ago a friend recommended baking soda and it has been a lifesaver for me. I soak at least once a day in baking soda bath, and the pain relief has been miraculous. I can usually function for 8 to 10 hours without pain, however I am still plagued by itching. It is best described as like poison Ivy, the more you scratch the worse it gets. I believe that the itch is caused or aggravated by my coffee consumtion, and I am trying to cut back on that. I apply a cream after bathing (Nupercainal) and that usually gets me thru the day. The itch, which is driving me crazy, is usually at night and effects my sleep patterns. I only saw one reference to baking soda in earlier posts, but I can assure you that it has been extremely helpful to me in the relief of pain. I am hoping that eliminating coffee will relieve the itching and in the mean time , I use the same ointment for temporary relief, or just take another bath in very hot water with the baking soda.

Ann from Cincinnati, Ohio Usa writes: "I am not sure if I have LS. I have to go to the doctor.

I have the itching and now redness. For a long time I used Derma E brand of Stop Itch cream. It seemed to really help so I just thought I was having sensitive skin. Now that I have tried to figure this out before going to a doctor I think I must have LS. The itch is unbearable and the cream seems to make it worse now. I am 60, and this started a few years ago, but was mild then.

I want to know if anyone feels these crawling sensations or a feeling like a bubble of leaking in the area? These feelings come and go. The itching can be like a sudden violent attack and reminds me of bad poison ivy.

Also in my very recent and frantic searches I saw information through Pub Med that a doctor used antibiotic treatment with good results because a large number of biopsies of LS patients have tested positive for the organism that causes Lyme disease.

I have to wonder how long has this disease been around. It seems like it isn't that rare like they try to say. Certainly, there seem too many people trying to find out what is going on. I also have rosacea, para psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis - all autoimmune issues - all impossible to cure, and all misunderstood.

So any feedback would be appreciated.

Glynda from Houston, Us writes: "Been interesting reading everything about this very ugly disease. I am 61 years old and have suffered with this since I was 11. My MOM took me to the doctor because I was scratching all the time, "down there". So that is for 51 years. And I am in that 5%. Mine turned into cancer. Not once, not twice but 3 times! 1996-2001-2008.

Sorry, but I don't see the eating habits to be that big of a cause. Mine have been all over the place for the last 50 years. For, many, many years I was told I had a chronic yeast infection! But, of course, my doctor today tells me this is what I had when I was 11. The only years I was not bothered with this LS nasty thing was when I was 20 to 25. Got on the PILL and never had it again until I got off. Prior to that I had it 1 week before each period, after period no problem. But, since 2008 it is EVERY SINGLE DAY! I feel very strongly that this is the make up of my hormones, and I don't think I can change it.

The itching is really driving me slowly insane. I feel like I have been very strong every day, trying the do the mind over body thing, but I am just flat worn out! Really looking for something to stop the itching. Thanks for all the ideas.

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] Dee from Utica, Mi writes: "I have had symptoms of LS for 2 years now and have finally found a way to keep it under control. The symptoms started after menopause with extreme vaginal dryness. Then the vulvar skin breaking, bruising and vaginal atrophy began. I work for a GYN doctor so I knew what was happening to me. I did try Perrins cream which helped a little in the beginning. I vas very reluctant to use any prescription medication, but after suffering for so long I finally tried a very small dose of Estrace cream vaginally once or twice a week which has helped alot. (I did not want to use Steroids). I also apply pure vitamin E oil (found at Target for $5.00) to the vaginal/rectal area everyday after bathing/soaking. I use only natural soap very gently in that area, no bleach on underwear, avoid any perfumes or strong dryer sheets that irritate, no underwear when at home and only lightly blot when using toilet paper. These things have helped me tremendously. Avoiding sugar and taking high potency probiotics do also help. I hope and pray that a natural cure can be found and that the cause of this awful condition will soon be discovered. I have been doing my own research and taking note of the similarities in women who have this condition. Hope this helps someone.

I can't wear underwear/long pants as it seems to irritate the area. Does anyone else have the same type of LS? I am tired of going around in my nightgown. Thanks"

[WARNING!] Kathy from Brisbane, Australia writes: "Lichen Scelrosis - theory yet to be proved:

I have a theory that moderate to high use of Vaginal creams for Thrush etc aggravate or possibly even CAUSE LS. The only way to find this out is to get as many women as possible with LS to say whether they have used these creams a lot in the past. I had a history of repeated Thrush and used the creams many times - I notice now that use of these creams aggravate the itchiness and thinness of the area for up to 2 weeks after use. Please post a answer and see if we can 'find' the cause - the Drs have no idea, so....

[YEA] Colleen from New Brunswick, NJ writes: "Wheatgrass Cure for Lichen Scelrosis.

I have had this for 2 years. and found Wheatgrass works wonders after using the topical steroids and it getting worse. I stopped using what the doctor prescribed and used WG and she was amazed and wanted to take pictures and everything. I tried many natural remedies and this is what I have found to work. I had about 6 months that was excruciating and painful sex but now and basically symptom free besides having a small patch of white spots that never real go all the way for good.

Wheatgrass pulp as a compress for 15-45 mins. Make sure it is juicy this is a little messy but very clean and has been proven as a remedy for many problems including yeast infections. Just holding the compress on for 30 mins made my white spots disappear and the skin that appeared was pink and healthy. Juice it and grow it yourself and use 1-2 times a week or get a wheatgrass shot at a heathfood store and ask for some of the pulp. I do this -you can tell them it is to treat a burn or infected cut b/c it is used for that too. You just bundle up the pulp and hold it on press it to your skin firmly. I sit and watch TV on the couch or in bed on top of a towel with paper towels on top. The chlorophyl is very rich and can stain clothing/sheets. Wheat Grass contains many minerals and chlorophyl so maybe this is why it works so well.

But, I recently got wheatgrass cream form an Australian doctor who makes it. it is sold on his website Dr. Wheatgrass. I find if I put this on a few nights a week the white spots disappear too and the skin heals. This stuff is amazing you can heal cuts and burns very quickly with it with generally no scarring. I also found that salt water baths help and Aloe Vera gel helps soothe, and tea tree oil ointment takes away itchiness.

I used the Nuva Ring birth control vaginal ring for 2 years and that is when my problems with LS started. Now I use a pill and generally have a little bit of white spots but no irritation at all anymore and the white spots always go away every month when I get my period. I feel maybe if I did not use hormonal birth control at all this would go away completely but am not at a point in my life where I can justify it as there is not as reliable of a natural method Hope this helps some people with LS b/c it is really awful to have this condition."
