Chanca Piedra Cure for Kidney Stones

Chanca piedra, a plant whose name actually means "stone breaker", is an effective natural remedy for kidney stones. Find it in pill form at your local health food store or online. Take this herbal remedy as directed.

09/26/2012: Elisa from Seville, Spain: "I went to a naturopath that commented that chanca piedra might destroy the dentin of teeth as it breaks down calcium in the body. I was wondering if maybe Bill would know if that is true.

Lots of love to all earth-cliniquers. Elisa"

09/26/2012: Ed2010 from Oakville, Canada replies: "Commercial colas do dissolve the calcium in the body. I am not sure whether chanca piedra dissolves the calcium, but it is famously called as Stone Breaker.

From my folk learning it is a liver strengthener, pancreas strengthener. Chanca Piedra is a herb, so use it for the purpose you want to be healed, you will be safe.

FYI, this is a very potent herb."

09/26/2012: Roec from Los Angeles replies: "There are different forms of calcium and Chanca Pedra effects the calcium-olalate. It does not effect calcium in bone, teeth and denton. If one is still concerned, dry herb cpasules are available."
09/27/2012: Bill from San Fernando, Philippines replies: "Hi Elisa... It is true that Chanca Piedra is a calcium channel blocker because it solublizes calcium in the body -- which is how it has gained its much-deserved reputation for ridding both gallstones and kidney stones from the body because gallstones and kidney stones contain calcium.

It is also generally true that western diets contain way too much calcium -- in the form of milk, ice cream, yoghurt, cheese etc, which can cause excess calcium problems in the body. Excess calcium in the body will also block the absoption of iodine in the thyroid gland and iodine absorption throughout the rest of the body and so this can significantly contribute to other symptoms and problems like hypothyroid, myalgia pain and loss of energy.

Chanca piedra is also well-known for its anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, lipid lowering, glucose-lowering, blood-pressure-lowering and mildly diuretic effects. CP also has strong hepatoprotective and kidney-protective effects as well. You can see all CP's other beneficial effects here:

http://rainforest-database.com/plants/chanca.htm

http://www.herballegacy.com/Thomas_Medicinal.html

I don't generally use Chanca piedra on a daily basis, but I do use it as a decoction on a monthly basis to help clear any excess calcium from the body and for its liver/kidney protective and reviving effects.

Also, in all the research that I've ever seen on Chanca Piedra, I have never seen any warnings stipulated about its calcium blocking effects in the body(as apart from drug contra-indications). There also seems to be no known overdose limit for Chanca piedra -- the natives in South America have been drinking it as a tonic tea for centuries."

[YEA]  09/01/2012: Jane from Dallas, Tx: "Chanca Piedra is the most effective remedy for kidney stones and ureter spasms that your money can buy! I have had serious problems with stones and spasms in the past, and now when I feel a stab in the back from a stone, or a tightening in the ureter areas, I take two droppers full, and like magic the pain and discomfort disappear. The taste is bearable -- kinda like prune juice -- and I carry a bottle in my purse at all times. Even today I had to use it, so here I am reordering and letting everyone know that this is a WONDERFUL product."

Started with just few drops and last one week full dose (10 drops) once or twice a day. Please reply or email me."

[YEA]  08/28/2012: C. Young from Summerville, SC: "I've had several bouts with kidney stones and went through all of the traditional therapies and treatments, including surgery. Nothing helped and I was left with an extremely large stone that was too large to pass. I did some research and discovered chanca piedra, so I ordered some. A couple months after starting a regime of taking 15 drops 2 X day, my monster stone started moving again. I dreaded the pain I knew would accompany this process and the medical bills we would be facing for treatment. To my surprise, after a few days of mild discomfort, I actually passed the stone that was "too large to pass!!" Moreover, it passed painlessly and my discomfort immediately ended. This stuff is great! I wish I had known about it years ago, as I could have saved a lot of money and avoided some horrific pain. It's the best medical investment I've ever made."

08/29/2012: Terrell from Akron, Oh replies: "I sent this stuff (Chanca Piedra) to my grandma who also had to have them surgically removed or special medication. She had a separate doctor she would visit quite regularly.

I sent her the herb in tea form, already sealed in a tea bag. She would drink a cup 2 times a day several times a week. Fast forward a year and a half. She gets a call from that doctor to find out what's going on as her once regular visits were now zero.

She said she was so well and things seemed so normal that she eventually forgot about the kidney stones. She then recalled why she started drinking the tea I sent her. I love grandma, she is at the age where she forgets things sometimes. She did not realize all that time that it actually worked.

In the beginning before I sent her the tea, she was complaining about how bad the pain was and that she was in the hospital because how bad the pain was. She was dreading that the pain was returning and foreseeing another hospital nightmare. I immediately thought of that tea, bought it online and sent it to her."

[YEA]  05/04/2012: Dawna from Albuquerque, New Mexico: "I recently had 2 5mm kidney stones confirmed by ct scan one in the ureter and one in the kidney. All the er doc could do was send me home with prescriptions for hydrocodone telling me it might take 2 or more weeks to pass. I was on the hydrocodone for 5 days until the stone had moved enough to give me some relief. Needless to say I was not a happy camper that I was just supposed to wait until the stone moved to the other locations by the pelvis and into the bladder when he told me I would just have to take the pain pills and wait it out.

So as I was researching and found out about chance piedra I went to a local health food store and bought a tincture. Took it 4 times the first day, a dropperfull in 8 ounces of water. I also drank apple juice and water throughout the day. In the pee strainer appeared small mounds of what looked like wet sugar. Most of it came out the first day and by the second day I believe all of it had come out. I put the sugar in another dish and when it dried it was a bright white color of what I believe was the pulverized calcium oxalate stone. (80% are) There was no pain and I am ecstatic. If this will help someone else avoid the awful pain of passing stones I am happy to pass it along."

[YEA]  04/16/2011: Tinrob from Middle Of Nowhere, Al: "For those people not helped by the ACV, lemon, and olive oil treatment I would suggest an herb called Chanca Piedra. I found out about it in 2008 after having my 7th bout with stones. I had the surgery and hurt so bad that the demerol wasn't touching it. I went online and found out about this great plant. It's name means stone breaker, and in addition to helping the urinary tract, it helps with blood pressure. It has to be imported and is not cheap, but it is cheaper than surgery and sooo worth it. I get mine online from nutrihealers, and I think you can get it from Amazon also. I have no ties to either place so not trying to promote a site. It comes in a liquid or capsule. The liquid works better but has a horrible taste. The capsules work really well also. When my first order arrived, within 2 days I felt like a different person. I took a dose of the liquid every 3 hours and drank lots of filtered water. I now take a dose a day for 1 week out of each month for maintenance and have had no more kidneystones. I ran out of Chanca at the end of last year and now doing the ACV honey drink every day and still no stones or blood pressure meds! YEAH!!"

[YEA]  04/24/2011: Pat from Smalltown, Oregon replies: "I am currently being treated by the Urologist for Kidney Stones that started two months ago. My family has been plagued with them and we live in different parts of the country and eat different diets so I am sure this is hereditary. I put off going to the doctors for a month with an oblong stone that became stuck in my Ureter, approximately 4x7mm long. When I finally went to the Doctors they did a CT Scan and it also showed a 14mm stone in the upper part of my left kidney and a 3.5mm stone in the lower part.

They addressed the stone in my Ureter with the first surgical procedure using a cytoscope instrument to break up the stone and extract it. They then installed a stent, a very uncomfortable tube to allow the Ureter to heal. Two weeks later I went in to have a Lithotripsy on the large stone in my left kidney and the Dr said he wanted to leave the stent in, I said no-way, to take the stent out! It was extremely uncomfortable with it causing spasms and feeling the movement of the coils on both ends in my kidney and bladder.

After they performed the Lithotripsy I was in continual pain for 5 days following with no particles straining out in my urine. I could feel that a stone had moved back to the location in my Ureter where the earlier one had blocked the flow, but this time it was still allowing things to flow. Luckily for me a friend called to ask how I was doing and informed me she had a stone like mine that had become lodged in her Ureter, and she had taken Chanca Piedra, aka "stone breaker" and she indeed had it work on the stone with it breaking it up allowing her to finally pass it! She recommended the liquid variety because she felt it worked better for her. The next day I was able to get to the health food store, bought some and started taking both the liquid & capsules. 3 1/2 days later the pain finally broke and some fine particles started coming out!

I returned to the Doctor a week later and had an x-ray taken, indeed the large stone they performed the Lithrotripsy on was gone, but the one in the lower part of the kidney had moved to the area in my Ureter. I have been continuing to take the "urgent" dose of Chanca Piedra 6 to 8 times a day. 4 days following that x-ray I feel that the stone broke up and passed yesterday, although I was away from home and not able to strain my urine. I will find out in another 1 1/2 weeks what the status is when the doctor has another x-ray taken.

I wanted to submit this so people would give this a try, as I feel it made a huge difference for me. I had intially tried the other remedies when I first started with the stone problem (ACV) somewhat helping with pain, but, it did not seem to dissolve the stone that was causing the blockage."

[YEA]  08/04/2012: Heather from Thunder Bay, Ontario Canada replies: "In 2010 I went in to emerg with severe pain and frequent urination. An X-ray found a 7 mm stone blocking the ureter, preventing urine from draining. I was hospitalized and a stent put in. Not only had I the 7 mm stone, I also had numerous stones various sizes in my other kidney. That stent was very painful every time I walked.

I went to our local health food store where the clerk suggested I try Chanca piedra. It was worth a try. I bought a bottle and took two capsules twice daily for two weeks, until my surgery for lazer blasting. When I awoke from anesthesia, my doctor said " no more stent. And guess what? No stones... " I asked him if he had trouble blasting them. He said , "No, there were no stones when he went in with his camera. None!! All were gone. No sand no large no small stones. ". He then asked what that was that I had taken, as I had asked him before I took them. At that time he said I could try the Chanca piedra but not to get my hopes up. I would take them again in a heart beat. In fact, my shih tzu has calcium oxalate stones and I am going to give him some Chanca piedra as well."

[YEA]  03/06/2011: Bill from San Fernando, Luzon, Philippines: "I've been living in the Philippines for over five years now. As an uprooted Englishman, my own adjustment to the tropical climate was necessarily swift. For some years I've had a fascination for and have used herbs, but I was astounded at the proliferation and variety of fresh tropical herbs that I am now able to grow in my garden so easily. These range from simple well known herbs like Thyme and Oregano to more oblique herbs like Chanca Piedra, Heart Vine, Aloe Vera, Tumeric root and Neem. So, over a period of time, I experimented and used many of these herbs very successfully for my own systemic candida and other problems, which are now all gone. I have also used both Heart Vine and Chanca Piedra over the years to successfully help people with diabetes, gout, high blood pressure, arthritis and candida problems.

There was one old Filipino who was quite badly constipated -- in a serious condition -- he hadn't been able to go to the toilet for over a month!! His family had tried all the usual laxatives with no success at all. I figured it must have been a blockage caused by a lack of liver bile, so I gave him the Chanca Piedra and Heart Vine remedy. He had a rather large evacuation after about 3 days of taking this decoction and he is now fine.
But I have had more recent success with my old and favourite Chanca Piedra and Heart Vine decoction remedy. I live behind a large but poor Filipino shanty where I have a friendly relationship with the community. They are lovely, happy people. Recently, an uncle of a Filipino friend said he went to the doctor complaining of abdominal shooting pains and bloating. The doctors diagnosed gallstones and insisted that they would have to operate to remove the gallbladder (gallbladder removal rarely, if ever, cures gallstones in the long run).

But the uncle was far too poor and couldn't afford the operation anyway. So a family member mentioned this problem to me and I taught him how to recognize and find the herbs, which all grow in the area, and I showed him how to make the standard decoction -- which consists of just two herbs -- Heart Vine (Tinospora cordifolia) and Chanca Piedra (Phyllanthus niruri) with daily dosages. In the Philippines, both these plants are regarded as useless weeds believe it or not. But in Indian Ayurvedic medicine these two herbs are revered for their rejuvenating and tonic properties.
Anyway, two months went by and word was eventually passed to me that the uncle with the gallbladder problem had successfully passed out all his gallstones naturally while taking the decoction and he was healthy once again. I really love it when I get feedback like this. To me it is simply the best sort of confirmation whether a remedy works or not."

09/27/2009: Bill from Malden, Mo: "Someone calling into a recent medical health show mentioned "chunk-a-pietra" [spelling???] as a curative to dissolve all types of stones in the body. Does anyone know what this is, or the correct spelling? thanks."

EC: Hi Bill, it's called Chanca Piedra, aka Phyllanthus Niruri. We already have feedback about this herb on the site.

More info on Wikepedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phyllanthus_niruri

Extracts of this herb have shown promise in treating a wide range of human diseases. Some of the medicinal properties suggested by numerous preclinical trials are anti-hepatotoxic, anti-lithic, anti-hypertensive, anti-HIV and anti-hepatitis B.[1][2] However, human trials are yet to show efficacy against Hepatitis B virus. [3]

The plant has long been used in Brazil as an herbal remedy for Kidney stones. Reseach among sufferers of Kidney stones has shown that, while intake of Phyllanthus niruri didn't lead to a significant difference in either stone voiding or pain levels, it may reduce urinary calcium, a contributing factor to stone growth.[4] In addition, one study conducted on rats showed that an aqueous solution of Phyllanthus niruri may inhibit kidney stone growth and formation in animals who already have stones.[5]

[YEA]  05/26/2010: Shannon from Ottawa, On replies: "I found out 6 months ago i had 2 kidney stones. One in my left kidney and one in my right. They were 3 and 4mm in size. Right away i started searching for ways to get rid of them, as i was dreading having to go through the horrible pain of passing them myself.

While researching, i came across the lemon juice method, as well as a herb called Chanca Piedra.

I read to drink a full cup of lemon juice followed by 1 oz in 1 cup of water for the next 12 hours. I have a lot of stomach problems so i wasn't able to do that. Instead about once a month i would drink a cup of lemon juice over a few hours, or make a salad dressing with lemon juice and EVOO.

I then purchased Chanca Piedra in pill form and took 2 pills once daily for about a month. It has now been 6 months since that Ultrasound, and I had a follow up Ultrasound this morning to check and see if the stones had grown or moved. The technician just looked at me and said "Where are your stones?!" I never passed them, but they are gone. He said there was a little bit of calcification in the kidneys, but no definitive stones like there were last time. I honestly didn't believe that these remedies would work, but i was willing to try even if there was only a 10% chance. So for all those who are skeptical, GO FOR IT. These remedies are painless and inexpensive and are TOTALLY worth it. I will be recommending them to ANYONE and EVERYONE i meet that has had experiences with stones."
05/27/2010: Bill from San Fernando, Luzon, Philippines replies: "Hi Shannon...I completely agree with you about Chanca Piedra, a truly remarkable herb. When I was taking my anti-candida protocol, I took several herbs everyday in a decoction and one of them was Chanca Piedra. I also took coconut oil as well as the juice of lemon and limes daily in Ted's alkalizing protocols with BS.

I'm not sure what happened but from the outset all my gallstones came out(I could feel them) at toilet over a period of 2-3 months. And not only did I loose weight, but as an added benefit my tummy became flat again...!!

I have high respect for Chanca Piedra, a remarkably powerful herb, which continues to grow wild as a weed in my garden here in the Philippines. I still take it once every month as a simple decoction for liver, kidney, immune system and blood support with other herbs(that also grow in my garden)."

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  04/21/2009: Aicha from Bedford, Beds UK: "I am a first time sufferer of kidney stones. My problem started at end of January. I was diagnosed with a kidney stone in my left kidney. My consultant after checking my scan again, then wrote to me to tell me i had in fact another stone also in my utherer. I have gone through hell to say the least the most pain of which semed to be coming from the "stent" and the continuous infections and always bleeding every time i passed urine. I have other medical conditions so used to dealing with pain and so have a very high pain threshold but this has truly been unbearable. I have been hospitalized 3 times so far! Recently someone mentioned chancy piedra so i rushed to order online and at the same time also saw this website for the first time.

This morning I have taken 3 cups of chancy piedra so far (and also the lemon juice and olive oil method for good measure). It is too soon to say whether i will pass the stones etc but i know one thing already..the excruciating pain i have suffered since end of January has actually gone for the first time!

My surgery is scheduled for tommorrow to remove the stone from my utherer and when i recover from the surgery i have been told i will need at least 2 lots of lithotripsy to remove the other stone as it is so big...

I wish i had seen this several weeks ago and i am 100% sure if i continue to take the piedra i will not need the lithotripsy...Have had so much time off work already and of course i will need another 4-6 weeks to recover from the op..There has been so much wasted time and all the hospital does is give you painkillers and antibiotics which in the end stopped working. I ended up having to take morphine as the pain was so bad!...I also suffered from acid reflux/reflux disease which developed into barratts esophegus so i will also be trying the aloe vera and also magnesium..Many thanks to all readers for their immensely helpful comments."

11/10/2009: Bill from San Fernando, Philippines replies: "Hi Connie...I live in Ilocos Sur in the Philippines and Chanca piedra grows like a weed in my area. Just go to Google Image and search for "chanca piedra" or "Phyllanthus niruri" and the images will show you what plant to look for.

Chanca piedra is also used widely in Ayurvedic medicine and is sold at Indian Deli stores in Manila. In Manila, if you go down United Nations Ave away from Roxas Bld you will come to the Unilever building on your left. Directly opposite is a line of Indian stores including Agad which sells Indian spices. At one of the other delis there I have bought two prepared indian condiments -- called Triphala and Caywanprash. Both contain chanca piedra. These condiments are both prepared in the natural ayurvedic way, with no chemical processing and no use of preservatives, colourings etc. You normally take just a spoonful or two a day of the Triphala or Chaywanprash and is regarded as beneficial food in India."

I have passed well over 100 stones. When the last one began causing me pain, I began making the tea and drinking it every day. By the time I passed the stone--It was very large and spent a couple of weeks or more in my bladder, the stone fell to pieces. Chanca Piedra, according to research done at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil affects the ability of the crystals to bond together. I am not sure it helps with pain, but it does cause the stone to dissolve over time."

WARNING!

[WARNING!]  09/03/2008: Rick from Inaka, JAPAN: "This is to add a strong second to one notice I have seen on this site to chronic kidney stone sufferers. If you have suffered repeated episodes of renal calculi buildup and passing kidney stones, it is advisable that you have your doctor run a simple blood test for hyperparathyroidism, an until recently little known condition that causes high blood calcium and a myriad of other symptoms including, but not limited to, depression, hypertension, loss of energy and interest, short temper, and even emotional instability. Many people suffer from this condition and do not know it, and many doctors are still unaware of it."

06/24/2008: Elaine from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA: "I see many of the folks in the Kidney stones area are reocurring sufferers. Some of them should ask their doctors to check them for Hyperparathyroid. You have four to six small rice size glands that sit close to the thyroid. These glands regulate calcium in the blood. Primay hyperparathyroid is caused by a tumor. Secondary hyperparathyroid is caused by a lack of vitamin D. Ask your physician to check your PTH (parathyroid hormone) and blood calcium. Sometimes you have to have a tumor removed and sometims all you need is extra vitamin D."

After the surgery my PTH levels returned to normal with the other 3 gland going back on line (so to speak). The doctors kept monitoring me for stones and until last Wednesday (09/24/2009) I had not suffered an attack for two years. X-rays had been clear for over a year. I have not had a chance to try some of the remedies yet but will be doing so in the hope of dissolving the one blocking my left kidney. Doctors put a stent in on 09/28/2009. Thanks for the information and suggestions."

Stone never showed up on CT scan or x-ray but I was having pain so he believed there was a stone. I decided to not opt for the surgery and sought advice from a naturopath.

I was told to start drinking 5 cups of cleavers tea a day. I should note that I did do the olive oil/lemon juice flush that same morning. The first day of drinking the tea the pain episodes lessened and I did not need to take my pain meds after that. Every day the pain got better. When the pain came it was in my urethra like a faint stabbing pain instead of in my back so I knew it was working its way out. Then a week after drinking the tea, I felt a quick pinch while urinating and then it was over. I saw a stone in the toilet, which I captured, and measured at 8 mm and was told it would not pass without surgery. I am to say that it will."

Why can't I simply buy some food grade phosphoric acid and dilute it down to a safe level? I would do this only I don't know what the safe level would be and if I need any kind of buffer for the acid.

5 years ago I had a small calcium oxalate stone I passed with the help of a supplement. Now I have an 8mm stone stuck at the bottleneck just above the bladder. So far nothing has worked to dissolve the stone. It's been almost 4 months now. I'm beginning to think that all these home remedies worked for people because they had stones other than calcium oxalate."

It should be untrue that Pepsi doesn't work, all cola beverages have phosphoric acid as far as I know--I use Diet Rite because it has no caffeine and is sweetened with Splenda instead of NutraSweet, which I believe to be very harmful to one's health. Had two stones two years ago before I heard about the Coke approach, had to have surgery, nearly $25,000."
