ALKALINE PH

[YEA] 08/02/2008: Deborah from Riverview, Fl: "Deb for your IC please get some Ph paper and test your urine. You want it alkaline, not acidic. Check it all day long. I think you might have a fungal growth. To kill it and get alkaline take 400mg of potassium citrate 3 times a day. Also take 1/4 tsp. borax, 1/8 to 1/4 tsp. baking soda and 1 to 2 tbls apple cider vinegar in a little water. Take it 3 times a day. You can drink some plain water after it to wash it down. The fungus won't like this and you may feel worse, before you get better, please stick with it and stay away from all sugars. I can now go 2 to 3 hours without going to the bathroom and only get up 3 times at night, it use to be every 20 minutes. Good luck and I will pray for you."
Replies04/16/2009: Anjie from Goodlettsville, TN replies: "Please help me understand this. I was told 3 weeks ago that I probably had I.C. UGH!!!!! My Dr. gave me Enanblex and the run down on this disease and told me to check several websites and support groups on how to deal with this. His nurse said it all to do with what I ate and if I ate something acidic to do the baking soda trick. It didn't help as a matter of fact it seem to get worse and my urine then had a foul odor with some pus in it. I finally convinced my Neurologist not my gyno to put me on antibiotics (even though the urinalysis was negative)and it seem to start getting better right away. Does any body else have this problem? I did find that you can use _____ to remove the acid from foods and it comes in a oral tablet & a granule formula to put in foods that you are cooking.I feel like I need to find a different Dr. because he wasn't very helpful and basically told me to talk to the internet if I had a problem. Any feed back would be so helpful."
05/03/2009: Elizabeth from Nashville, TN replies: "This is for Angie from Goodlettsville, TN that suffers from IC...if you had pus in your urine than it sounds like an infection to me. My urologist said that the does not rely on the urinalysis done in the office because they can be unreliable. He always sends them out to be cultured. I would definitely get a second opinion if I were you. I would much rather have UTI's which can be cleared up rather than IC which is a chronic condition. Best of luck to you."
07/01/2009: Pooky from San Diego, Ca replies: "potassium???!!! that would kill an ic patient. An ic patient cant get alkalined with acids. it would kill them!!! The potassium test is a test to see if you have ic. If you are crying after it you have ic. it's a cruel test."
07/26/2009: Susan from Grand Rapids, MI replies: "I have had IC for 19 years so I have a lot of experience dealing with it. When I first came down with it I also noticed that antibiotics relieved my symptoms, so I kept going to the doctor and begging for antibiotics. Whatever causes it is some kind of virulent fungus. What has worked best for me is ___ ____ [anti-candida supplement] and colloidal silver."
01/14/2011: Diane from Ottumwa, Iowa, Usa replies: "For I. C. , look at a particular form of calcium called Calcium Glycerophosphate, (brand is P______.) good luck everyone."
06/05/2011: Renae from Mpls, Mn replies: "Calcium Citrate alkolizes urine while giving you calcium you need anyway. Search on Google " "Calcium citrate" "urine PH" " Plus you can put them in your purse. I use 4/day (The recomended dose), one per meal and 1 w/small snack b4 bed. (Purchase w/Magnesium in the pill also, or you can get constipated. ) Test w/ph paper if you like. Works like a charm, while providing what we need anyway-strong bones. I hear to always take calcium w/food for best absorption. 1st time I took them, I tested PH and wow very alkaline. Pain went way down. After taking for 3 weeks, I was pain free, but still on the IC diet, but starting to cheat a little with good results. (salty foods good now, I couldn't eat blueberries b4, can drink white wine now) Sleeping well (up 2x- was up to 10x), and able to wait to go for over 1.5 hrs now."
06/16/2011: Lisa from Hastings, Mn replies: "Yes. I agree. Calcium Citrate did the trick. And Fast. Pain gone almost right way and permanently. I can eat much larger variety after only a few days. Staying off citrus and tomato sauce because I don't want to push it, as I am back on low acid caffeinated coffee after only 2 wks and I am afraid to push it. I need the caffeine more to get to work. I am also back on chocolate. If I take it on an empty stomach though I get nauseous! I take 3 to 4 per day. If I take 4 I get dry lips though. PH of urine is VERY alkaline."
[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 07/12/2011: Renae from Mpls, Mn replies: "Update: still have IC as a problem even w/calcium and mag. Not cured. Can't open up diet much, but constant pain gone. Took awhile to get the correct calcium to magnesium ratio. As I have fibro and that got bad (as did constipation) on just the calcium citrate (w/the little magnesium oxide that was in the capsel) so had to add more magnesium oxide , but adding too much caused diarrhea. After finetuning this I still need to move on to do more w/glucosamine and condritan, but have a hard time taking that due to gastro issues. I am going to try some "manesium citrate and ozide", together as I keep reading about how the citrate changes urine PH to alkaline."
10/11/2011: Sandi from Clarksville, Tn replies: "I just read your post, even thought it was written about 2 years go. I hope that you are doing much better. Just wanted to let you know that you live very close to one of the best doctors in the country. Dr. Barry Jarnagin is absolutely awesome. Just Google his name and you will be very impressed. I cannot say enough great things about how wonderful he is. Not only did he help me get my IC under control, he also diagnosed a hernia that everyone else missed. Feel free to email me if you need to chat."
10/23/2011: Bobbie from Hartsville, Sc replies: "I read your post here and am interested, I've had IC in 2003- 04 for about a year, Sat before last it started back... I'm just sooo depressed about this and in pain most of the time. I've been through all that back then, and can't tolerate the idea of going through all that again. We thought it my just be a regular UTI but now I'm thinking it''s IC back. Burning, pain, and urgency. Thanks, Bobbie."
04/19/2012: Ali from Brisbane, Qld Australia replies: "I had recurrent cystitus for 30 years. Got to the point where I could not have sex without getting it. I would also get it if I got too dehydrated. Doctors advice did not prevent the attacks. I had to help myself, I cured myself by using a mild antibacterial cream instead of KY jelly before sex for six months. I have not had an attack since and that was 5 years ago. Sounds simple, but it worked. If you are into more natural methods you could try ACI-JEL which is just vinegar in a cream. You can also try 1/4 tsp of bicarb with water twice a day to keep you alkaline, as the problem thrives in an acid conditions. Good luck to all you long sufferers, my heart goes out to you."

ALOE VERA

06/16/2011: Pinklight from New Orleans, Louisiana: "I am interested to know if anyone has used a special aloe vera formula for ic available from two particular companies that are online. These aloe capsules are formulated specifically and takes 2-3 months to cure, not treat ic. Both companies have the word "harvest" in them.
-Pinklight"
Replies07/29/2011: Nettie from Chicago, Il replies: "I have used a supplement from evenbetternow.com for my IC (I think it's called Buffer Ph). It has aloe vera in it and alkalizes your ph if you are acid, which was part of my problem. I tested my ph and was as acidic as one can get. Bad news and dangerous. I take 2 caps 3X per day on an empty stomach. I also take a multi-vitamin, vitamin D, Calcium, Magnesium, high dose Omega 3, probiotics and some supplements that my acupuncturist gave me. I get acupuncture once per week. It's been a life saver. Along with the IC, I also had problems with chronic UTI's, which I cured by taking Inner Defense capsules from the essential oil company, Youngliving. Before starting on the essential oils, I was taking antibiotics all the time and they were making me more and more sick. The ant-bacterial essential oils got me off of the antibiotic cycle and have helped to strengthen my immune system."
[NAY] 09/02/2011: Renae from Hastings, Mn replies: "http://www.buzzle.com/articles/side-effects-of-using-aloe-vera.htmlDon't listen to "aloe has no side effects" Not true.
I have tried the Harvest Aloe. Severe gas, gut ache. Not everyone can use it. They give you a sample of 6 pills for free. 1/8 th of one pill gives me severe problems. Can't use. I have a history of IBS. I eat no sugar, gluten, dairy, alcholol due to IBS.
Many people are helped according to their website. Not me."
[NAY] 04/20/2012: Gianna from Costa Mesa, Ca replies: "I started using freeze dried aloe vera capsules for my mild IC, which I have had for 10 years now and can't seem to find a remedy :( Anyhow, I took 2 capsules 3x a day and I really didn't see any signs of improvement."

ALOE VERA, VITAMIN C, MARSHMALLOW ROOT

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 11/29/2009: Karen from Riverside, California: "IC Home Remedies
I have a mild case of IC and hoping is doesn't worsen. I notice that stress, spicey foods and menstral cycle provokes flare ups.
I am curious if the apple cider vinegar will really help prevent IC or if it is toooo acidic???
My home remedies for IC are: aloe vera juice (very concentrated) daily, Buffered Vit C, marshallow roots boiled as tea to neutralize urine for temporary and effective relief, the product called "___" for temporary relief, and pin pointing and relaxing specific abdomen muscles. The aloe vera juice seems to be very effective.
I would also like to try the baking soda and will keep it on hand at work for emergency relief. My father has always used the baking soda for stomach pain."
04/08/2010: Wendy from Toronto, Ontario replies: "I have found the Marshallow Root to be very helpful for flare-ups. The Baking Soda did not help me but Apple Cider Vinager has been helpful. I get flare-ups the same as you - stress, certain foods and during that time of the month. I am also prone to bladder infections and collidoial silver has been helpful for these."

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR

[WORKED TEMPORARILY] 01/11/2009: Nancy from Charlotte, North Carolina: "i have suffered from IC for the past 10 years. it has caused extreme, constant pain bringing on bouts of depression i never had. i had read about apple cider vinegar and its benefits. over holidays, tried it, two tablespoons in an 8 ounce glass of water twice a week. for a week i was virtually pain free and realized it had to be the vinegar. walked today and am hurting. does anyone else hurt after walking? took baking soda, 1/2 tablespoon to 8 ounces of water for relief. this seems to help for a "quickie relief". IC is a horrible disease that gives you pain 24 hours a day. have seen four urologists in four states. elmiron did not help. when pain is really bad lasts too long i do have percoset for my migraines that is a last resort. it gives me a day of relief. working and just living are difficult with this constant pain. hoping the vinegar will continue to help. any other folks finding that vinegar relieves? doctors send me in the same circle, cystoscopes, CT scans, cultures, different meds like Urelle. i've spent a fortune."
Replies08/27/2010: Molly from Madison, Sd replies: "I have had IC for quite sometime. I am going to a chiropractor now (not your typical one) and he is treating me with laser treatments and acupuncture. It seems to be helping, but I did just start. You may want to give that a try. I've had more problems solved/questions answered going this route than I have for the past 6 years plus of doctor visits, tests, and "treatments"."
01/13/2011: Vegathegreat from Charlotte, Nc replies: "I am also in Charlotte. You should go see Dr. Robert Evans in Greensboro, NC. He's one of the foremost IC experts in the country, and is extremely knowledgeable."

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR AND HYDROGEN PEROXIDE DOUCHE

05/21/2011: Pinklight from New Orleans, Louisiana United States: "I am greatly interested in anyone who read about an equal parts Apple Cider Vinegar and hydrogen peroxide douche that reduced or cured ic. My issue is the frequent urination day and night. I tried this concoction today and it burned so badly I could not really do it. It may have been the Apple Cider Vinegar that caused the burning; I'm just not sure. Has anyone tried this? If so, did you end up having to dilute the recipe with water and it still worked? I'm anxious to know. Thanks for any replies! -Pinklight"
Replies08/23/2011: Rabm from Austin, Tx replies: "Hi New Orleans, Did the douche work for you? Are you still having pain? rabm"
01/24/2012: Natalie from Pittsburg, Ks replies: "Hi RABM, I am going to try the douche, hoping it works but I was wondering, what do you use to douche? Do you buy a douche at Walmart or where would you get the supplies to douche. Sorry I have never done this before but REALLY want to get relief without the extreme diet and pills. Thanks so much. Natalie"

[YEA] 09/04/2010: Cherieh. from Odessa, Texas, Usa: "I was diagnosed with Interstitial Cystitis more than 2 years ago and it's been excruciating. Having been told there is no cure, and after many painful and expensive treatments I had to be my own health care advocate. A couple of months ago I began to douche 2x a day... Morning and afternoon... Using equal parts apple cider vinegar and hydrogen peroxide. (Do NOT douche in the evening or the hydrogen peroxide will keep you from sleeping. ) Within 4 days, the constant urge to urinate was completely GONE and I was able to discontinue the Flo*** I was taking to help me urinate. After the second week, I was able to discontinue taking El***** because all my symptoms of I. C. disappeared! My doctor is utterly amazed and telling his other I. C. Patients. I am able to eat anything I want (with the exception of beets and hibiscus tea) without fear of a flare up. I have my life back!!!! Amazing that the help I needed was under my roof the whole time. I am still douching 2x a day as of today."
Replies09/12/2010: Greatful from Frisco, Texas replies: "Wow, Thank you for sharing I am going to try this right away!!!"
09/20/2010: Silliesyl from Long Beach, Ca replies: "Hello I am in so much agony with my ic and have been trying everything. Just wanted to know how soon you got relief?"
09/21/2010: Zsaqwe from Brownsville, Texas replies: "I think DMSO is for interstitial cystitis. CVS pharmacy might have it for that condition. I got it from the web. DMSO, although it is not approved by the FDA for anything except an obscure bladder condition (interstitial cystitis), is widely used in sports medicine. Professional sports in particular are obligated to use DMSO to get their athletes recovered from injury and back on the playing field. Each team knows the competition will use it, and this would mean a tremendous advantage for the other team, if it were to be ignored. Combine that with the fact that DMSO is as safe as it is effective (unlike large-dose steroid injections, which were once commonly used in professional sports) and its use becomes mandatory in professional sports medicine. When you consider the fact that DMSO is not a new and patentable drug, is cheap, safe and effective, and knowing what you should know about the medical establishment in the U. S. , you could predict with your eyes closed that there is a propaganda campaign against DMSO. The FDA has done nothing except drag its feet in DMSO research since October 25, 1963 when the first research application to study DMSO was filed with that agency. I got the information from: The Doctors' Medical Library by Ron Kennedy, M. D. , Santa Rosa, CA"
09/21/2010: Elizabeth from Nashville, Tn replies: "That is wonderful to hear! I also had suffered from IC and never once thought to look in that area until I read this article:
"Researchers Ruben Gittes, MD and Robert Nakamura, MD, of the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation recently published a research study on Female Urethral Syndrome: A Female Prostatis" in the May 1996 issue of WJM. Their studies have conclusively proven that women do indeed have a set glands, the paraurethral glands, which are homologues of the male prostate. In the abstract for their research project, they state "The most important aspect of recognizing this microscopic 'female prostate' as an anatomical feature is that it's infections may completely explain many cases of the urethral syndrome."
I noticed my symptoms decreasing when I started using boric acid capsules for my recurring bv/yeast infections. I noticed within weeks that my IC symptoms improved dramatically. I now use a verrrry diluted oregano oil for my vaginal health and guess what???? No IC symptoms.... I take my daily turmeric just in case (it's a great anti-inflammatory) I just thank the Lord that I found Earthclinic over a year ago. I have found soooo many awesome remedies that WORK!"
09/22/2010: Rs from San Francisco, Ca replies: "I also tried all the remedies for BV and also had continuous bladder infections (so I thought) most likely caused by douching with H20 and H202. I read about the boric acid capsules and quickly bought boric acid and veggie caps and made my own (very cheap). I inserted one capsule nightly for about 3-4 nights and it was gone. Totally gone, and like you, I never had another bladder infection again, which I later found out was I.C. And I never knew it. I also believe that the boric acid capsule cured the I.C. When I feel the BV or the I.C. coming on, I immediately insert a boric acid capsule and its totally gone. I also highly reccommend liquid colloidal silver for I.C. I read about it on this site for treating I.C. And also make that a daily part of my regimen. The first day I took the liquid colloidal silver I felt all my I.C. Symptoms go away. I take it everyday now without fail and no pain, everything is back to normal. I also take large doses of super cranberry extract everyday just to be sure I have everything covered. It may be over kill, but its better than dealing with the pain and discomfort of I.C. And BV on a daily basis. Thanks for your comment and thank your Earthclinic for helping me and others."
09/28/2010: Melisa from Odessa , Texas replies: "What doctor here in Odessa do you see for IC?"
11/27/2010: Alex from Yorba Linda, California replies: "To: Rs from San Francisco, Ca I wanted to undesrtand correctly... U insert the Boric Acid in the vigina? I want to make sure I am understanding the note u posted. Thank u so much. Alex"
02/08/2011: Lauren from Los Angeles, Ca replies: "Hey ladies, I developed "IC" after a miscarriage last year. A doc put me on various types of antibiotics (which always made my bladder feel better) for ureaplasma and possible Lyme disease; I have not had a positive urine culture since the onset of my "IC". Because of the antibiotics I got yeast infections a lot. Frustrated, I began douching with peroxide and - SURPRISE!!! My constant bladder symptoms (urgency, frequency, burning, pressure) and pain during intercourse were nearly erased!! So I ordered a vaginal test to figure out why. It showed that I don't have BV at all and very little yeast, but a serious overgrowth of group B strep (4 on a scale of 0-4 !! ) an antibiotic and herbal sensitivity test was done, showing all antibiotics to work, and also oregano and colloidal silver.I'm currently trying oregano mixed with coconut oil (so I can mold it into a suppository and it wont sting). My doc says the herbals are better for vaginal problems because antibiotics kill off the lactobacillus/bifidobacterium, allowing infectious bacteria to return stronger. Whats interesting is I tested negative for group B strep while pregnant with my son 3 years ago.
Also, I noticed while using the antibiotics, kefir or any other cultured milk was the only product that seemed to truly have live and active bacteria. If I drank this, my stomach was fine. But with probiotic capsules, regular yogurt, my stomach was NOT happy! I hope this helps someone!! I'll keep you guys updated! "
02/25/2011: Shawna from Bronson, Mi replies: "I want to say thank you for this idea. I have been battleing urinary issues since just before Thanksgiving. These issues include constant burning, pressure and really bad spasms. Tests continue to be negative for infection. I've been on antibiotic off and on the whole time and __viaz for about a month, still no relief. Pain so bad at time I can't get out of bed, sleep in a recliner with pillows between my legs and have been off work for over a month. Running to the bathroom 30 or 40 times a day and 8-12 times at night has foreced me to hybernate. I started using the half perioxide half apple cider douche 3 days ago and drinking lemon juice with honey also and feel like a new person. Only getting up 1-2 times at night is awesome and I no longer feel the spasms or my bladder hardening. I quit taking my scripts yesterday and can not wait to go back in next week and find out the results of my scope and udi test. But am so thankful you shared this remedy."
[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 03/04/2011: Lauren from Los Angeles, Ca replies: "I too started douching w/ peroxide and vinegar due to a stubborn yeast infection and- voila!! IC symptoms (burning, pressure, pain, frequency) were soooo much better. So I douched for about 2 months, but it kept coming back quickly unless I douched every few hours. I learned I have a very heavy growth of group B strep in my vagina (tested negative for it 3 years ago, before IC started). So this explains why antibiotics always made my bladder feel better, but after I stopped i'd get a major flare-up (good bacteria killed off enabled bad ones to proliferate more).
Currently having luck with boric acid. I insert a "00" size veggie cap full of it at least once a day, and also a cap full of kefir cultured milk to repopulate good bacteria."
07/01/2011: Gloria from Yucca Valley, Ca replies: "Do all of you use boric acid, or is this a mistake, and you meant to say borax (which kills fungus?) I thought boric acid was poisonous."
07/07/2011: Mary from Hastings, Mn replies: "It's something that dehydrates the tissues. I have noticed this, when I have done it. It will also burn if done too frequently. It is used for bugs. They lick it off their feet and they get dehydrated and die. I suggest to use in an emergency only."
08/15/2011: Doodlelady from Westfield, In replies: "Can you please tell me what the ratio of Hydrogen Peroxide - Apple Cider Vinegar is for this douche? Also is it mixed with anything else ie...wWater. What do you use to douche with... Sorry for all the questions. I have IC, and have been suffering since I was 21, and I'm 46 now. I had yeast infections on and off my whole life, but have been testing negative for years now, but I do have itching. Also would the Boric Acid work better than the douche? Can you use the oregano oil vaginally? This sounds like overkill though. I could not tolerate the oregano oil capsules because it upset my GERD/Acid Reflux... Thanks for all the wonderful information..."
09/15/2011: Mary from Hastings, Mn replies: "Boric acid capsels can be premade for emergencies and kept with you. I fill only to 1/2 full or I can get a burning sensation. I put them in my purse in case I flair and have to drive a long way, or fly on a plane all day. They can be inserted in any restroom really fast if you have your purse with you. I premake a few for if I can't sleep due to pain and urgency, and I want quick relief. Works in 15 min to 1/2 hr for me. Keep with the tampons in your purse. It can save a vacation, or a dinner out, that's for sure!"
01/30/2012: Natalie from Pittsburg, Ks replies: "To Cherieh: I have started the douching and it is amazingly helping alot. My question is, do you douche during your period? I know this is an older post but I hope someone has an answer for this one. Thanks for the the great info everyone! Natalie"
02/23/2012: Julianna from Three Rivers, Mi replies: "Hi all - just something to add for stomach issues, acid reflux.... Try digestive enzymes for your stomach. The chewable papaya enzymes are easy to take. order them from www.drugstore.com for the best price. It should help with your acid reflux/stomach issues. It's not recommended if you have IBS or Crohn's however."

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR, BAKING SODA

[QUESTION] 08/05/2009: Ga Girl from Villa Rica, Georgia: "IC and High Blood Pressure
Hi, I looked to see if i could find a question similar and couldn't find one... please excuse me if there is already (and kindly direct me to it). I started taking ACV with honey 2x/day morning and evening after my mom in law told me about it. Her mom has been taking it for yrs and is rarely sick. It was great until my IC started acting up. My bladder was throwing terrible fits. I looked on your website and did the baking soda thing and it helped so much. I also went out and got an over the counter pill that my OB/GYN had suggested back when my IC was flaired up and initially diagnosed. on monday i went to the doctor and was told my cholesterol and triglycerides were high (total cholesterol was 232). I am 33 yrs old and not very active at the moment, plus i have a desk job. I know i need to modify my diet and get some excercise.
My question is this: I was wondering, if i mix the baking soda with the ACV, like i saw in another post, will I still get all the benefits of the ACV (such as lowering my cholesterol) without it causing my bladder to flare up? And is the baking soda safe to take everyday?
I don't want to go on any medications...anything i can do naturally is the way to go for me. I was also recommended by a friend to take 2 oat bran tabs 2x/day... it helped her lower her cholesterol 30 pts. I am going to get some of those today.
Thank you!"

BAKING SODA

01/06/2012: Mary from Tucson, Az, United States: "I have had IC for 30 years. My main pain triggers are vinegar, lemon, citric acid, acidic foods, vitamin C, some of the B vitamins. I am unable to take any products with citrates, orotates, asporotates. The perfect remedy for me is 1/8 tsp. Baking soda (I use nonaluminum product from health store) mixed into very warm water. Usually pain subsides within the hour. If not, I take another 1/8 tsp. It is important to read labels carefully because many products contain triggers. My flare will occur within hours of eating a substance so I have learned that even small amounts of vinegar in mayonaise and salad dressing can be a problem. Before I reached menopause, hormones (I believe estrogen) were a trigger as well. That occurred at onset of menstrual cycle. An over the counter product for vaginal burning was very helpful to me at that time. It contained Benzocaine for numbing. I would only use for extreme pain though because it contains parabans, etc.
I learned these are common causes of flares at the IC website: Vitamin C, some B vitamins, the hormone Estrogen, acidic foods. Unfortunately, I suffered many years before I found what was helpful for my flares. Now I forget that I even have IC because I can treat it so easily. I'm hoping this will be helpful to someone."

[YEA] 02/08/2008: Elizabeth from Memphis, TN: "I have chronic bladder problems (Interstitial Cystitis) and am always looking for something to make it better. I drank 1/2 tsp of baking soda in some water during the worst possible bladder pain ever. In 15 minutes the pain was gone. I feel that the baking soda made the urine less acidic and that let my bladder be less irritated. Anyway, baking soda did what hundreds of dollars of meds could not do--make me feel better! BAKING SODA, PEPPERMINT EXTRACT

[YEA] 10/30/2011: Sharron from Grove, Ok Oklahoma: "I've been suffering a terrible flare of IC. Apparently, I've had it for years, although I just learned about it recently. I've adjusted my diet to eliminate all acidic type foods. Onions appear to have been a particularly bad thing for me, and I used to eat them all the time! Anyway, I'm still recovering from this flare -- it's been two weeks now that it's been bad. I came on the EC site about a week ago and read separate posts about peppermint tea and baking soda. Well, what I've discovered is that both of those things help me. However, what seems to help me best when I'm having a lot of pain and urgency is 1/2 teaspoon baking soda and a few drops of stevia extract mixed with either 7 drops of peppermint extract (not oil) OR a strong-brewed cup of peppermint (leaf) tea. Within minutes I'm feeling better. If it is during the night, I'm able to go back to sleep right away instead of laying awake with stabbing pain in my abdomen.
Additionally, I've lost 6 pounds in a week. I think it is related to all the inflammation that the IC was causing. I hope that it will continue!
I hope my little remedy will help others who are suffering. Thanks for a great site. I almost always come here first when I need a remedy for something.
Blessings!"

BARLEY MILK

11/25/2010: Mel from Portland, Or: "Whole Barley Milk with MSM Recipe
This recipe is very easy and cheap to make. Whole barley flour can usually be purchased from a health food store or ordered online for about $2/lb. The cheapest source of pure MSM powder I have found is an online bulk food supply site for $9.71/lb, and it lasts a really long time. Even if you omit MSM from the recipe, it is still wonderfully soothing and healing. Whole barley milk is smooth, creamy, and easy to drink. Personally, I find it tasty. It is a perfect beverage for mixing in other supplements such as ph drops, aloe, condroitin, d-mannose, liquid calcium, etc. It makes a nice smoothie shaken-up with 100% blueberry juice. I have been drinking about a quart of whole barley milk a day and it has helped me greatly. I recommend it for any one wanting to improve their health, especially those suffering with IC, UTIs, arthritis, or heartburn. Like marshmallow root water, barley water is demulcent. It is purportedly soothing and healing to soft tissues, such as internal organ linings and soft tissues surrounding joints throughout the body. Water boiled from barley has been used for digestive health and general soothing tonic for centuries. Whole barley is rich in fiber and good for cholesterol health. I usually triple this recipe, making three quarts at a time. Ingredients:
2 tablespoons whole barley flour, organic preferred, - not coarsely ground
1 pinch sea salt, optional
1 tablespoon raw honey or organic agave syrup, optional
1 tablespoon safflower, grapeseed, or coconut oil; cold-pressed/organic preferred
1 level teaspoon pure MSM powder
4 cups cold water
Have a clean quart jar and lid handy for each quart of milk being prepared. In a good non-reactive saucepan, whisk the barley flour into 3 cups of the cold water, and heat over medium-low heat, stirring regularly until steaming. Do not boil. Whisk or shake the MSM into the remain 1 cup of water, and set aside. Add salt and honey or agave to the saucepan, if desired. Continue to heat and stir until thickened (about 5 to 10 minutes). It should look something like skim milk the consistency of heavy cream, and should be well heated like hot soup. Remove from heat. Whisk in oil. Whisk in MSM mixture. Pour un-cooled into clean quart jar, cap and refrigerate. Chill barley milk overnight before using. This allows fine barley particles to fully absorb liquid. Shake well before serving. If you prefer a thinner beverage, mix with water or blueberry juice. Keep stored barley milk refrigerated and use within a week. Notes about adding other supplements: A single serving size (as directed) of supplements such as ph drops, liquid condroitin, and/or d-mannose powder may be mixed in the last cup of water along with the MSM, before incorporating into the barley milk and refridgerating. Heat sensitive supplements - such as Aloe, or supplements that should not be taken near bedtime - such as liquid calcium, may be added when serving, if desired.
About me:
I am a 38 yrs old. I believe that I have had too much acid in my system my whole life, both as a result of diet and exacerbated by times of stress. As I approach middle age, soft tissues throughout my body are suffering, especially my bladder lining and those involving my joints. I have been a natural foods junkie most of my adult life - but unfortunately I also had a serious daily habit for all things extremely spicy and sour, as well as copious amounts of caffeinated tea. I also drank alcohol and smoked cigarettes socially. For bodily comfort, I have omitted these things from my diet/habits. General stress reduction is also a must. Yoga helps! Best of luck and health!"
11/29/2010: Ziggy from Franklin, Pa replies: "I have read your post & see that you suffer from ic & joint pain. I am currently going thru the same thing at this time. Do you know why you have the joint pain. Just curious to know if you found out anything. Thanks so much!"
[YEA] 12/22/2010: Mel from Portland, Or replies: "I can not say for sure if there is a direct link between my personal joint pain and I.C. , however, I believe they are indeed related. I believe they are related because first because the dietary/supplement remedies that help one always seem to help the other. And correspondingly, when one is flaring, so is the other. I believe that they are conditions both exacerbated by high acidity in the system, either as a result of diet, or stress, or both. These are the dietary items I have found that seem to give me comfort, relief, and healing... -barley water, and barley milk
-eastern barley (also known as hato mugi, jobs tears, coix), also as water or milk
-unflavored gelatin, mixed with cold water, then dissolved in tea or hot water and drunk or added to kefir, nondairy drink, or low-acid juice
-agar, used with beverages the same way as gelatin, above
-whole grain hemp seed milk
-whole grain unsweetened brown rice milk
-whole mixed grain nondairy beverage (a healthfood chain sells one with quinoa and amaranth)
-coconut water/juice (all natural)
-carrot juice
-marshmallow root tea
-soaked basil seed drink (all natural/homemade)
-fresh broccoli and kale sprouts
-onions
-chondroitin supplement
-msm supplement
-d-mannose supplement
If there is anything above you have not heard of, search it online and you will find info. I am doing very well after changing my diet and drinking plenty of the assorted beverages listed here. Good luck!"
05/17/2011: Jen from Portland, Or replies: "Mel, I am not sure if you will see this since you wrote a year ago here. I just found out I have IC and am wondering if you are still doing well from your changes and barley milk? I live in Portland too. Thanks"

10/31/2011: Lynne from Titusville, Pa replies: "Mel I also am curious if you are still doing well and what kind of bladder pain was yours cause mine is burning, pulsing pain in my bladder and back that has been 24/7 since 2006, and is the barley milk healing to the bladder? This pain is so horrrible I would like to try the milk- is that what has helped your bladder?"

[QUESTION] 10/06/2009: Husseypat from Panama City, FL: "Interstitial Cystitis
I have IC and have suffered severe pelvic pain. Diet has helped a lot, but I am definitely not pain free. I have found that heat can help the pain temporarily and that the acid reducer listed on the IC NETWORK does help if you take it before every meal or snack. I know tomatoes drive me to a bad flare-up, so I try to avoid them at all cost. It's very hard to not eat foods with any preservatives-----that means nothing out of a box, can, or package. I do not drink ANYTHING but water. I wondered if anyone knows which of the bottled waters has the highest PH and the least of damaging processing for an IC patient. I can't walk much, stand much and definitely can't exercise. I get horrible pain. I bought an Elliptical Trainer machine and after a couple of days it had my pelvic in a complete knot. I have always exercised religiously, but not anymore. I find this condition can be very depressing because you know the lining in your bladder is gone forever and you have to deal with this the rest of your life. You look healthy when people see you, but they can't imagine the suffering you do in private. Good luck to all. pat"

[YEA] 07/28/2009: Angela from Federal Way, WA: "I am so sorry to read of soo many struggling with bladder problems and UTI's. It is miserable and costly and sometimes embarrassing!!!
I had what I thought was constant UTI's or feeling like I was getting one for about a year. I did get many uti's but even when i didn't 'officially' have one it felt one was coming on. I was finally diagnosed with Interstitial Cystitis. This is when part of the lining in your bladder is thinned or damaged- causing tissue, muscle, and nerves to be exposed to your urine causing debilitating pain. If you get an infection on top of this it is excruciating. I thought I was dying one time. After being diagnosed and not ok with "experimental drugs" I looked into natural options and prayed a good deal. I asked God for wisdom as no one here seems to know what to do to end the pain.
I started taking cayenne pepper. Believe it or not it actually works! I was scared to death to try it but the incredible pain i already had made me feel "it can't get any worse". I found capsules that also had ginger root in them to help the pepper not burn your tummy. Cayenne is an amazing healer of Interstitial tissue (bladder lining included). Start slow.. maybe two pills a day at 40,000 hu. It does burn some but that means it is working. After a couple of days add more pills to your intake until you can take 3 in the morning and 3 at night. Always take with food. Hang in there through the initial tough parts... you will get some diarreah and it can be painful. Also, cut out coffee, fruits and berries for awhile. After a couple of weeks try a half cup of coffee with an antacid and see if you can tolerate. Add lots of greens to your diet.
I have been doing this for over two months now. I can drink small amounts of coffee and little bits of fruit. I went from a 10 in pain to a 0... no pain at all. At times a little discomfort but I can tell my bladder is healing. The heat of the pepper is supposed to help fight infection too."
10/29/2009: Christie from Cottage Grove, Tn replies: "Dear Angela,I just read your post about cayenne for IC. You posted July of 2009. It is now October. I would be very interested to know whether you are still taking the cayenne and how it has worked out over the last three months. Thank you!
--Christie"
06/27/2010: Jim from Franklin Park, Illinois replies: "My girlfriend has suffered from IC for years. She has loosely controlled (only a couple of flare ups a year) it with diet. The taking of Cayenne sounds crazy for those suffering from IC. I am looking an update from anyone using Cayenne to treat IC. Thanks for any help."

[YEA] 04/14/2011: Md4im from Orlando, Fl - Florida, United States: "after immense daily suffering, I found an article on glucosamine-chondroitin-MSM for IC relief. Provides cellular components that are essential to the epithelial bladder lining. Made a 180* difference - very noticeable after just 2 days. Still taking it 6 years later, and I can TELL when I miss a few days. It has been a real life saver. I hope this helps other women out there!"
Replies[SIDE EFFECTS] 07/07/2011: Mary from Hastings, Mn replies: "Side effects for me are bad digestion, IBS. CAN"T take it. Also can't take that hyaluronic acid either (eyes feel like sand in them) Any other ideas to heal the GAG layer (glycosaminoglycan layer)?"
08/16/2011: Mary from Hastings, Mn replies: "Found a Glucosamine and Chondritan that doesn't bother my GI tract that much if taken w/food. It's sold at an IC site CystoP*****. Maybe it's because it's got Olive Kernal in it, which makes it more bio available. I take 4x per day (1 capsel per day) rather than twice per day (2 capsels per meal). Already see a small differance after 4 months. Constant flair is gone, and can have salty snacks and sometimes blueberries now. I had gone crazy w/blueberries over the last few yrs since getting this and I seem to have developed a problem w/them."
09/26/2011: Tricia866 from Collinsville, Il, United States replies: "Hi Mary, Is the Glucosamine the only remedy that you are taking for your IC? Is it still helping with repairing the bladder?"
11/23/2011: Mary from Hastings, Mn replies: "Update on this Glucosomine & Chondroitin: I found that when I take it, the Quercetin makes me VERY hot only at night. I tested this by just taking Quercetin. Same result. The heat radiates from my vagina! I am 48 yrs old, and having night flashes, but this is ridiculous. I had to quit the product. I had tried it for a few months and I wasn't gettting much sleep. I just got hotter and hotter. I hear it helps alot of other people though as stated by their testimonials on-line. I called the company, and they said that they had not had this complaint before. Maybe I will need to try another brand."
01/17/2012: Mary from Hastings, Mn replies: "Anyone try Gotu Kola? I tried it in the past, but got hives and had to quit. I found out Acidophilis stops hives. Now I am on alot of Acidophils and will retry some Gotu Kola. Anyone find relief with this? They sell it online for Cysitis, as it repairs the GAG lining of the bladder. Thanks!"

[YEA] 01/05/2010: Donna from Royal Oak, Mi: "I've battled bladder issues all my life, and for a while, high contentrations of cranberry (pills, not juice - juice has too much sugar which feeds the infection) helped. That was until I got IC and became antibiotic resistant. Felt like I was peeing glass. By fluke I read 3 sentences in a magazine that saved me - it basically said that cinnamon kills off E-coli. E-coli is often the cause of bladder issues and IC. I started taking cinnamon capsules and felt major relief in a matter of a few days. I highly recommend it to anyone who suffers from IC. You'll sing its praises too."
Replies01/06/2010: Elizabeth from Nashville, Tn replies: "How much cinnamon do you take daily? Do you take capsules already premade or use fresh? Thanks."
01/08/2010: Donna from Royal Oak, Mi replies: "Fresh is of course always better, but I basically took premade capsules for the convenience. Started out with 4-6 a day, a couple in the morning, afternoon and evening. After the symptoms were alleviated, I gradually reduced my intake. I still will take one a day, and sprinkle fresh cinnamon on my toast or apples just for maintenance purposes. Wonderful thing is that cinnamon also helps stomach issues! (gas, bloating, etc) It is a miracle worker as far as I am concerned."
01/08/2010: Elizabeth from Nashville, Tn replies: "Thanks for the information. I will add this to my daily regimen for my IC and hopefully get the same results. God Bless!"
01/08/2010: Donna from Royal Oak, Mi replies: "Let me know if it works as well for you as it did for me! Good luck!"
08/16/2010: Emily from Charlotte, Nc replies: "Hi Donna,
I live in NC but used to live in Ann Arbor, Mi! Hope you are doing well. I have suffered from pelvic pain for a while - I believe it's IC, as it flares up after I drink coffee, eat chocolate, or eat strawberries or tomatoes. I read your post and bought cinnamon capsules. I would love to know if you or anybody on this post has had luck with cinnamon - how many 500 mg capsules should I take every day to feel a difference?
Thanks! Emily"
09/08/2010: Jen from Ann Arbor, Mi replies: "Be careful with Cinnamon, it's a major IC bladder irritant for me."
[NAY] 01/19/2012: Ichater from Northern, California Usa replies: "Prior to the worst flare up in my life, I had already been taking cinnamon capsules daily for a year prior... So I don't think that cinnamon works for everyone. I was taking 1000 mg a day and I still had a flare up. :/"

COCONUT OIL, COCONUT WATER

[YEA] 03/29/2010: Kelly from Chicago, Il: "I only found out about virgin coconut oil Dec 2009. I had bladder pain for 15 years - eventually diagnosed with interstitial cystitis but was always convinced it was a bladder infection since Bactrim (sulfa antibiotic) would always make me feel better with flare ups even though cultures were negative. I had a flare for months that would no longer go away with Bactrim. I started with coconut water and it helped my urethral pain. Now, I take coconut oil and coconut water. I no longer have urethral or bladder pain!!!!
I am beginning to believe that interstitial cystitis is a bogus diagnosis that thousands of MDs have earned a pretty penny off of - in fact - entire medical fields have opened due to this diagnosis. I think all women with this should try coconuts before they spend another dime! I know the frustrations - I have been to the best urogynes and urologists - Northwestern in Chicago since I was a teenager and in California. I have had my urethra widened twice, - I have been tortured like so many other women; missed life events, canceled trips, spent many days in the ER with flares - not too mention the $$$ spent! AND ALL THIS TIME -- COCONUTS WOULD HAVE SOLVED MY PAIN. I MUST TELL EVERY WOMAN!!!!"
Replies04/25/2010: Salgal from Miami, Oklahoma replies: "I, have suffered for years with symptoms of IC. I am blessed because I don't have the pain but feel like I need to urinate all the time. I have been to the so called best doctors in my area with no relief. Finally I tested positive for UTI, which I think I may have had all along. I am antibiotic resistant and did some research and found out there is a resistant bacteria, ESBL, that is more difficult to cure than MRSA. I, too always feel better when on antibiotic but the infection comes back about 2-3 weeks after treatment. I am going to try coconut oil to see if that helps."
04/27/2010: Teresa from Rockville, Md replies: "I have suffered from IC for years. I take a prescription med but also take quercetin. I have been in remission for 8 years."
[NAY] 08/14/2010: Lucy from Chicago, Il replies: "I'm wondering if the coconut oil is still helping and how long it took to see results. I have been taking both the water and oil for nearly 1 week, with no decrease in symptoms. Thank you."
11/16/2010: Iceangel from Chicago, Il replies: "Salgal,
I was diagnosed with IC Oct 2008. I have had symptoms including, urgency, pressure, and burning. 4 weeks back the symptom went to another level! I was having unbearable burning (felt like razor cuts in my bladder), blood clots in my urine, chills, pressure, extreme urgency.. I took the uti strip test at home and it came negative for nitrites, but positive for leucosites. I went to the doctor and for the first time I got a POSITIVE UTI results. They said I had ESBL infection.Currently I am prescribed antibiotics for 4 weeks. The symptoms decreased down after a week, but they are not gone. The first week they it got better, but now they seem to be coming back. I have been sexually inactive ever since the symptoms increased. As I was feeling better now, I gave it a try yesterday, and now my symptoms have increased again. I am not sure if ESBL infection can be long term. I have had IC for 2 years. I want to believe that it is this ESBL infection and will be cured by antibiotics :)
I wanted to know if your ESBL infection was cured? Also, was it a separate infection beyond your IC or has your IC been cured as well?"
11/16/2010: Francisca from Michelbach-le-bas, Alsace, France replies: "Hi, I always have the most common bacteria coli bacillus, no idea what are the others you are talking about but one thing I make sure of is that I treat it right from the start. I have never let it get really bad because that is very dangerous. I drink a lot of water right way and if I don't get better quite quickly I take antibiotics for three days. I hate them but luckily this now only happens once a year and when I don't take care to drink enough liquids. I think that maybe it is taking time to go away now because you let it go too far. Be careful......... If it gets to your kidneys, my doctor told me, it can kill you in no time! "
02/05/2011: Aron1947 from Sarasota, Florida, Usa replies: "Hello Kelly from Chicago,
Could you, please, let me know how much coconut oil you were taking and who is the manufacturer. Thank you very much in advance. Best regards. Aron."
[NAY] 12/12/2011: Martin from Seattle, Wa replies: "I'm a man, 46, who may have this condition. My symptoms fit it to a tee, and more serious symptoms are not evident.Regardless, two of three flareups in the last 3 months occurred as a cause of using coconut oil as a lubrication, and this was after using it for years as a lubricant. It is the clearest trigger I've seen, and I used to use it for 3-4 years all the time satisfactorily. It does not seem to have adversely affected my gf.
This leads me to believe either I'm not keeping it fresh enough, or it's a transit vehicle for the fungus or bacteria, but I just wanted to add in that it hasn't been a wonder cure for me. Maybe ingesting it would help, ironically, but direct application has become a total no-no for me."

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 06/30/2010: Rs from San Francisco, Ca: "I have been battling interstitial cystitis since February 2010 and have been on several rounds of Levaquin thinking it was a UTI. After reading this site I know its cystitis. I went to Whole Foods yesterday and bought ultra colloidal silver and took 2 tsp. yesterday right when I got home and 2 tsp. this morning on an empty stomach, as directed. As of this moment I have no urinary pain at all and no urgency to pee. This is a miracle. It worked fast and it took all the symptoms away in about 24 hours or less. I took my first dose yesterday at about 3:0pm and my second dose this morning before work at about 4:40am. Im pain free and peeing like a normal human being. I did get up last night about 3 times to pee but I expect tonight to be very different. I can feel a difference already. I will give another update in a week. Good luck ladies!! Give this a try if you are at your wits end like I was."

[YEA] 04/06/2012: Britt from Harrisburg, Pa: "Hello, I'm 22 year old female suffering with a bad flare up of IC. For the past 2 years I've been getting DSMO treatments every 6 months (once a week for about 6 weeks). I've found these to be amazingly helpful. It's been about 8 months since my last treatments and that is why I think I have a bad flare up now.
I am able to drink coffee (sometimes) and basically anything I want for up for 6 months after the treatments and feel fine!
During this current bad flare up (the worst it's ever been) I've tried cinnamon pills, baking soda, and colliaded silver. So far cinnamon pills and baking soda may have helped a little and just took the silver so I'm not sure how that will work.
I would HIGHLY advise to get DSMO. The first treatment or 2 can be pretty painful in itself, but after that the results are so worth it.
Good luck everyone :)"

[YEA] 06/28/2008: Bret from Phoenix, Arizona: "You know, DMSO is approved by FDA for treatment of hemorragic cystitis. I about died when I confirmed this, as DMSO has be characterized as quackery by the medical powers that be. I don't understand why lesser forms of cystitis are not being catagorized as treatable with DMSO. My suspicion is that the hemoragic cystitis is so crippling and so evil that somebody with a heart at the FDA couldn't igonore the clinical research suggesting efficacy for this horrific illness. Cystitis has been called "autoimmune," naturally! By now many people reading this can predict that I will associate it with a virus or elusive infection.
How does DMSO work? Many, many theories but very few pertaining to viruses. It would be too simple and easy to say that DMSO best known as oxygen donor, attacks anaerobic viruses by depriving them of their anaerobic environment. This would be too easy! Too cheap!
Baking soda, I was skeptical at first about this broad range therapy. But, after reading so many, many testimonials from people not promoting themselves or selling anything, hell, I am about to write something about this cheap, simple remedy on my own research website. I will of course try it myself as I too am battling a chronic illness, a confirmed infection of the prostate.
Ted, in this regard has been benificial by taking the time a providing the chemistry to me which explains Baking soda's relationship to CO2.
Baking soda, higher urine ph, is in fact anti viral as viruses just love slightly acidic environments. Alkaline ph actually prevents viral transcription of RNA for replication. Base pair matching cannot happen at certain ph levels. Even in cancer. Whatever we believe causes cystitis one thing is for certain, once again, higher oxygen and higher ph are god sent remedies."
10/18/2011: Lauren from Northern Ca, Usa replies: "Do you mean DMSO medically inserted into the bladder? Or cream applied to the area? I love DMSO and would love more info on how you used it."

GELATIN

[YEA] 03/22/2011: Mel from Portland, Or: "In the past couple months I have had dramatic success with IC symptoms using plain, unflavored gelatin. After reading a medical report that suggested evidence Chondroitin may bond to compromised areas of bladder lining tissue, and knowing that Chondroitin is processed from cartilaginous matter, I decided to try adding a regimen of unflavored gelatin to my usual IC mindful diet and supplements (see posts). Obviously, vegetarians would not be able to try this, and those with religiously restricted diets would need to locate an appropriate type of gelatin. I started dissolving single packets of unflavored gelatin in hot teas and soups: consuming 3 packets a day. Within a week, not only had I noticed an absence of any painful flareups - but my bladder really did feel somehow stronger - something like less "bloated" or "distended" when "full". I have continued this for two months and I feel it may be the most restorative (as opposed to just soothing) IC specific remedy I use. I think it may be "building-up" bladder lining. If anyone else is game to try this for a few months, please post your results - I am eager to hear if others experince any similar changes."
Replies08/04/2011: Spelt 70 from Bracey, Va replies: "I just ran across your post about gelatin. I am desperate to get some relief. I was just wondering if this was still working for you and have you had any side effects. Thanks."

[YEA] 05/07/2012: Gwyn from Denham Springs, La: "Dear Friends Who Suffer from IC- What a disease this is, with lots of pain, urgency and most of all not knowing what to do; that can make you think you are crazy!
I have had IC since I was a child but never knew, until my daughter was diagnosed with it at the age of 12 years. I had to live through her pain and anguish for years, and I'm not only living through her pain now; but mine too.
I have tried herbal remedies, and diet and I find one herbal remedy that will help calm that pain down within seconds, and that is Goldenseal! Try it!
I was told by a massage therapist I visited to try Cayenne peppers for ulcers; and I was desperate to try anything to calm this pain down... and do you know that within a few days, I feel great! It has not only helped my pain, but it has also given me energy and helped the muscles and lower back pain I have with IC.
I have also tried over the counter vaginal cream and that helps the burning you get with IC; it does the trick. I have never used medicines doctors have prescribed because of side effects, so I try the natural way always and lots of prayer!
There is another herbal product that will help with the goldenseal already in it and that is Kidney/Bladder by Natures Way, this product really helps and just follow the instructions on how much to take and carry it in your purse with you; and take it with each meal.
A candida diet helps too and stay away fron sodas, it will do you in!
I do hope some of this helps you, because it has helped me and I help my daughter with herbs!
May God Bless you all! Gwyn"

HYDROGEN PEROXIDE, IODINE, ORGANIC FOOD

[YEA] 11/16/2009: Mariais from Gf, Mt, USA: "Peroxide, Iodine and Organic foods for Interstitial Cystitis
I started having IC symptoms over a year ago, and was diagnosed earlier this year. I tried prescription antibiotics, antifungals with minimal results. I am convinced now that IC is an infection of the bladder by microscopic parasites (schistosomes - look up Hulda Clark and IC) and fungus, because antiparasitic herbs, salts, iodine, peroxide, antifungal herbs, and other antimicrobial treatments have kept my symptoms completely gone for many months.
I started on one drop of 35% food grade h2o2 x3 daily to 25 drops. I stayed on the max dose for 3 months. I am now on a maintenance dose of 5. I also consumed about 300-500mg of iodine thoroughly mixed in 1/2 gallon fresh homemade wheatgrass juice daily. I was on this range for about 3 months also. I am now on a maintenance dose of 50-100mg daily. Other changes I made this past year was to switch to all organic, down to my condiments, personal care products, etc. I also moved out to the country here in MT, where water and air is fresher and cleaner. I regularly douche with a mixture of equal parts peroxide and acv, with a tbsp of borax per cup of liquid mixture.
IC is a complex illness, and it takes commitment to major fundamental changes in one's life to see significant changes for the better.
Thanks"
12/15/2009: Leslie from Anaheim Hills, Ca replies: "My daughter has suffered with IC for two years. She lost out on going away to college this year because of her constant pain and flair ups. I went to at least 8 different doctors and many hospital stays for pain control. I took her to my good old family doctor for a flu bug and told him about her problems. He ran allergy tests and found she is highly allergic to Yeast. She has Candida which is an over growth of yeast through out her whole body and it is inflaming her bladder. Look up yeast connection and women. Your answer is there!"
03/13/2010: Melissa from Tampa, Fl replies: "I wanted to know what the doctor prescribed for Leslie's daughter for the yeast allergy. I have also been diagnosed with a yeast allergy and have IC. Thanks, Melissa"
03/14/2010: Lisa from Coral Springs, Fl replies: "Couch grass works wonders for IC. Take it in pill form or in a tea and after about 30 days you will never knew you had it."

If you are allergic to shellfish you may also have an allergic reaction to iodine.
Proceed with caution - consult your physician before using iodine.

MEDICATIONS FOR IC

[SIDE EFFECTS] 11/29/2009: Karen from Riverside, California: "I suffer from a mild form of IC. I was prescribed "Elmiron" by a uroligist. The Elmiron made my mind crazy. I couldnt think straight or drive well. I could barley take attendance in my classroom, let alone teach. I cut back to only taking it at night. The drug knocked me out. The CD that came w. the prescrition blatantly stated, "the researchers arent quite sure how this drug works..." Very Scary!!!!! I stopped taking Elmiron after a couple of months and turned to natural remedies, life changes and stress management. (Also, lots of prayer!)"
Replies01/14/2010: Angela from Houston, Tx replies: "I was diagnosed with mild IC a little over 4 years ago, but think I've had it more like 20...I remember trip after trip to the dr's for a UTI, finding nothing wrong, but being prescribed antibiotics. Been taking Elmiron on/off for the past 4 years and have finally had it. I've lost so much hair over the past year, and finally faced the fact that it does nothing for me! Also done the whole DMSO thing, but think that's more painful that helpful. Anyone else felt the same way? I'm usually in bed the rest of the day from pain. I've got Marshmallow Root and Whole Leaf Aloe on the way, and use baking soda for a quick fix. Will let you know how my experiment goes! : )"
01/15/2010: Elizabeth from Nashville, Tn replies: "The aloe works wonders for the bladder pain. I've read it actually works to repair the lining of the bladder. Slippery Elm is supposed to do that too. I use the distilled kind of aloe juice that "tastes like spring water". Can't mention the product name. I had IC pain that got so bad last summer I thought about taking pain pills. I didn't want to do that so I went the natural remedy way. After alot of trial and error this is what works best for me:
1) I drink lots of water to keep the urine as non acidic as possible. I also take Prelief when I eat or drink anything acidic.
2) I use marshmallow root liquid- non alcohol (1 dropper full), aloe vera juice (3 oz) , MSM (4000 mg), and tumeric (1000 mg) as a daily regimen. I have some break-through pain sometimes but I keep it under control most of the time. It tends to flare up more when I get close to my cycle. I've noticed that this regimen also helps quite a bit with my IBS and asmtha too.
I've done alot of reading on IC causes and I think mine started because of systemic candida and having an acidic ph. Candida can affect all of your organ systems, which it has mine. I take coconut oil (2 tbspn), oregano oil, and ingest H202 to fight the candida (I'm seriously considering doing the H202 intravenously). I'm going to add fresh garlic to the mix. I also take 50 billion probiotics daily. My health is still not at 100% but I have come a loooong way in a year.Good luck and God Bless!"
07/28/2011: Missie807 from Blue Island, Illinois, Cook replies: "I have had a IC flare up for the past 4 days, ODDLY enough I haven't had a flare up in 4 years! I drink pop (soda), coffee and alot of chocolate!!!! Still no problems, I lost my job, sister got sick and because of all of this STRESS guess what... IC IS BACK!!!!!!!!!! Stress in the Number one cause of my IC and now I have to eliminate stress which can be as hard as eliminating "Acid" from your diet. I went to Walgreens and bought AZO Standard which an anti-flammatory drug for bladder. It works WONDERS!!!! NO PAIN!!! The baking soda and water provided "some" relief, but not enough, I was still in pain!!! I was diagnosed about 5 years ago, after chronic bladder infections and no relief. The doctor said my bladder looks like swiss cheese! Scarred beyond measure. I was devastated, I wanted to just die. Glad to know I am not alone (although I wish NOBODY had this disease) I would not wish it on my worst enemy. I also bought some Cinnamon and Calcium Citrate (which I will try if the Cinnamon doesn't work) I'll repost later to let you know what works best for me. Thanks eveyone and keep the conversations coming, we need to stick together to beat this thing!!"
01/18/2012: Chrissie B from Anaheim, Ca, United States replies: "First timer on this site. I appreciate all of the valuable information... Mostly just knowing I'm not alone is the most helpful. I was diagnosed about a month ago with IC and am just trying to navigate my way through this murky pool of "treatment options". I was wondering if anybody has any advice on how to mix and match some of the different supplements/extracts/juices/etc??? I went out and purchased several of the things many of you all have mentioned am both excited and reluctant to try them.Should I try one thing at a time? Start with one and then add more each day or week? I'm affraid... Don't want to mix up a cocktail of all of these things and make things worse. HELP???? My pain and discomfort say... Take everything mentioned all at once and cross my fingers... My head says... There has to be a logical way to go about all of this that is both safe and smart. Any feedback is is greatly appreciated!"
01/20/2012: Timh from Louisville, Ky, Usa replies: "Chrissie B, not sure if you got answered so here goes. Yes slowly, I like the swimming hole analogy of first just getting your feet wet (one foot at a time), then you'll soon be wading, then swimming. There are very few interactions with natural medicines as compared to pharmaceutical (although many naturals don't work well together while others work very well together (synergistic). Unless you're in a life-or-death situation, spend as much time as possible reading into the world of natural medicines & treatments while taking notes or highlighting anything and everything pertaining to your situation so you can re-read for permanent memory."
01/21/2012: Chevygirl from Tuakau, Franklin, New Zealand, New Zealand replies: "Hi Chrissie, I was told to take acidophilus tablets and I must admit, I was pretty skeptical about them working, but I can tell you, they worked within an hour!! I was blown away! The weird thing was however, I bought them from right where you are at a drug store in Anaheim. The bottle is labeled 'Henry's', freeze dried acidophilus. When they had run out I bought more from our local health shop (in New Zealand) and to my disdain, they didn't work!
I have no explanation for this, so I will have to get my brother, who lives in Anaheim, to send me some more, as those ones definitely did without fail!!
Good luck with this, keep us posted!
Chevygirl, NZ"
