HERB TEA
09/01/2011: Nicholas from Edison, Nj Usa writes: "I've not been getting good sleep for a couple of weeks. I had no problem falling asleep, but slept only a couple hour, on and off. Very dissatisfying... left me weary.
I checked this fabulous website and saw it recommended different teas to help sleep. I found I had two ... Yoga brand "Bedtime" tea and Sunrider brand Calli "night" tea. I boiled both of them separately... 3 cups of water each pot. I slowly sipped a full cup of the Yoga tea after my evening meal, and then slowly sipped a full cup of the Sunrider during the hour before sleep.
I had a good night's sleep, had great dreams and awoke in a positive mood. Tonight I will drink only one of them to see if it's sufficient to the task."
Replies09/22/2011: Jc from Boston, Ma replies: "I have and still use the Yogi Bed Time tea from time to time. I helps a little bit for me but not a significant difference. If you drink too much after 8pm it may wake you to urinate. This effect needs to be balanced with many herbal bed time teas.I find the Nighty Night tea by Traditional Medicinals to be a biy more effective. But again, nothing dramatic, sublte and no urge to urinate at 4 AM.
Can anyone recomend any Chinese Herbs for sleep?"

[YEA] 12/13/2007: Bonnie from Long Beach, US writes: "I was looking on your site a couple days ago and saw a remedy with honey to help lose weight. I tried it and found that i had more energy during the day, had less of an appetite, and fell asleep faster at night!! i love it! the remedy i found was every morning, a half hour before breakfast, as well as right before bed at night, drink a tablespoon of honey in one cup of boiling water with a teaspoon of cinnamon. It has only been four days, but man, what a difference!!!"
Replies[YEA] 12/04/2007: T.Srikantharajah from Wimbledon, England replies: "Daily in the morning, 1/2 hour before breakfast on an empty stomach and at night before sleeping, drink honey and cinnamon powder boiled in one cup water. If taken regularly it reduces the weight of even the most obese person. Also drinking of this mixture regularly does not allow the fat to accumulate in the body even though the person may eat a high calorie diet."

HORLICKS

[YEA] 06/01/2009: Beth from London, UK writes: "My mum is 65 years old and has been experiencing lack of sleep at night for about 3-4 years. She would drop off to sleep but never have any sound sleep as she would hear everything happening at night and had difficulty falling asleep after getting up at night. She now takes a drink of Horlicks every night and sleeps quite soundly that I have to wake her up in the morning. She gets up in the early hours of the morning to go to the toilet then drops back to sleep quite soundly that she can't hear my radio playing music in the morning. She started with 4 teaspoons of horlicks in a cup of milk as the label states but now sleeps even with taking one teaspoon. She also uses the light, medium and strong types and they all work the same. On the nights she doesn't take horlicks, she doesn't sleep. What I can't understand is that she used to take vitamin B complex tablets, which horlicks is mainly made of, every night but never slept. Does anybody know of any side effects for long term usage of horlicks?"
RepliesEC: Horlicks is a malted milk hot drink: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horlicks
01/23/2012: Lorayne from Sun City, Az replies: "I wouldn't use Horlicks, since it contains milk which means it probably contains rBGH (genetically modified bovine growth hormone). Go to www.mercola.com to read up on the dangers of GMOs. They are in dairy, soy, corn, canola, zucchini, yellow squash, Hawaiian papaya, cottonseed and alfalfa at present. Organic food cannot be GMO. So if you want to eat these things, choose organic. The Environmental Working Group has a petition of it's website to force labeling of products that contain these poisonous GMOs. Go to www.ewg.org to sign the petition."

HYPNIC JERKS
01/19/2012: Maria D from London, Uk writes: "Hi, would you please be able to begin a topic on HYPNIC JERKS? It's a life wrecking condition for so many people as it totally prevents one from falling asleep. The person will be able to fall asleep but will wake up *the second* he/she starts to drift by this jolt/jerk that. So the cycle goes for hours and hours. I really think this should be a topic on its own and not under insomnia as the person is able to actually fall asleep but keeps waking up from these jerks.
I would love to hear Ted's opinion on these hypnic jerks.
I have struggled with these for several years and they truly ruin my sleep completely. I know that alkalizing the body helps a lot. The things is, it always gets much much worse after I work out. The harder I work out the worse they get. It makes me wonder if the body cannot clear lactic acid, or wheter it's some kind of electrolyte imbalance.
I usually can keep these jerks under control by massive doses of Natural Calm magnesium. However, it gets really expensive and I usually must take doses so high that I get a loose stool the following day.
I am just about to try Ted's alkalizing baking soda/apple cider vinegar formula although I am not sure exactly what the best ratio would be for this.
I used to have perfect sleep and insomnia like once per year. A doctor once gave me a few pills of Xanax for minor anxiety attacks daytime (if I had known then about this poison... ) and after about 5 pills this nightmare began and has stayed with me for 8 years now....
Please, if possible, create this as a new topic as I know it will help many many people around the world.
Many thanks,
Maria"
01/19/2012: P from Middle, Fl replies: "You can move to California and get a prescription for them organic cigarettes that seem to be illegal in the rest of the united states (wink, wink)OR
you can check out; "Cat Nip Tea"
I read that it is an alternative to marijuana in the sense that it gives the same tranquil effects, they sell it as tea, but I've also read that young kids smoke it as well. but of course I'm suggesting the drink version!
Also check out 5htp and melatonin!
Good luck! I get that too and it is very irritating! I haven't tried the above because magnesium works well for me at least 500mg and chamomile tea with passion extract as well.
I don't live in california, but wish I did! ; )"
01/19/2012: Linda from San Francisco, Ca, Usa replies: "Hi Maria, Have you tried a Magnesium Chloride or Epsom Salts bath before bedtime?Or you might be able to get away with soaking your feet the way I do, as follows-
What I do when in a hurry to get to bed is put about 1/4 cup into a plastic dishpan, then stand in it as I shower, or if I'm already out of the shower I add a small amount of water (inch or so) to the pan with the Magnesium and stand in it as I brush my teeth before bed; I do not have hypnic jerk but I think it might be worth a try for you. Magnesium is the Great Relaxer..
OTOH something very like what you describe used to happen with me years ago, and it was actually a Bladder spasm. It was happening because I was "holding" urine too long and my body was desperately trying to clue me in. I hadn't even realized I was doing it... Just too much to do, and no time to stop.
I hope this helps,
Linda"
01/20/2012: Hattonhall from Woodridge, Queensland, Australia replies: "Magnesium is rapidly absorbed through the skin, maybe a MagSolution is available which could save you over the high cost of those li'l ol' pills ??"
01/20/2012: P from Middle, Fl replies: "Hello Again! I forgot to tell you that Castor Oil on your eyes and lid might work also; minutes after putting it on, my eyes start to curl with sleep! I read that it cools you off indicating to your body that it's time for sleep!"
01/20/2012: Francisca from Zug, Switzerland replies: "Maria, I had the very same symptoms after I had to wear a brace during the night because I had had my teeth straightened! I had no idea more people had the same problem or that it had a name? It was awful and usually I would also have a big snore, would jerk and wake up over, and over and over again. After a while it got better but when the orthodontist changed the stand of the brace it started all over again! Somehow this stopped when I went to the nose doctor and he gave me two sprays and anti-histaminic pills. I think that if people have never had this they have no idea how it feels like and how miserable it makes one feel! It is like our body is working against us, like some sick joke where one is waken up every time one falls asleep, or some kind of torture. The orthodontist told me he had never heard of it but I can hardly imagine he hadn't as he was at the end of a long career but well, this way he didn't have to deal with my problem! Jerk!"
01/24/2012: Maria D from London, Uk replies: "Hi Linda, thanks, I have tried magnesium chloride by Natural Calm. It truly helps but in order for it to help I need to take about 4-5 times the RDA. It's way to much for my stomach to tolerate too, although I prefer good sleep. I am just wondering if there is anybody who has found a permanent cure to these jerks/jolts."
01/26/2012: Francisca from Zug, Switzerland replies: "Maria, I did... I left you a post a while ago! But I didn't have them longterm like you! As far as the magnesium chloride goes you can try to do it transdermally! Dissolve the crystals in water and apply to the skin. As I said I had the hypnic jerks on two different occasions (many days at a time) because of my orthodontic braces but with the nose sprays the doctor prescribed they disappears instantly! Now I don't wear braces anymore I don't have a problem! No idea other people had the same problem or that it had a name! The orthodontist told me that he had never heard of it but then... He was a jerk, took my money and never finished aligning my teeth!"
01/28/2012: Francisca from Zug, Switzerland replies: "Sorry Maria, I am not living at home right now so I can't see what the spray was called. I went to the doctor twice and I think that he prescribed the same stuff both times. He also prescribed a spray with sea water (that one I have here with me) and an antihistaminic. The mixture worked both times and now I don't use the braces anymore the jerking has stopped completely! I have no explanation.... But it was awful so I know what you are going through. And I only had it for a short while.... I got very afraid to go to bed! The orthodontist didn't want anything to do with it and I felt very alone! I still get the chills when I think about it! Torture, is the right description! All the best to you and when I go home at the end of February I hope to think about it and look for the spray. But any anti-congestion spray together with the sea water spray (to clean the nose to start with) and an antihistaminic might do the trick! Worth talking to a doctor about it..... It worked right away, amazing! The doctor had me sleep with a machine to record my sleep but it didn't work because I woke myself up all night! I suppose you googled that problem? I never did but luckily I got relief right away and the second time I just went back to the same doctor. I don't think that he knew the problem either!"
01/28/2012: Maria D from London, Uk replies: "Hi Francisca, sorry, I did read your post, thanks. I'm totally bewildered about your orthodontic experience. You wouldn't happen to remember what kind of nose spray the doctor gave you?I feel pretty sure this boils down to some kind of electrolyte imbalance, in my case. I don't know why my body can't keep the electrolyes in balance anymore. I used to run miles and miles without such a problem. But now I can barely powerwalk without things worsening. As soon as I work out hard they get a thousand times worse.
I have tried massive amounts of magnesium oil all over my body. It helps as well but not completely. I need to combine this with too high of a dose oral magnesium in order to sleep. And then I get (I hate the word) diarrhea from such a high dose of magnesium and feel exhausted from that instead...
Please Ted, if you read this, help!!!
I am going to try potassium citrate to see if that helps.
I'm waiting to buy a new juicer (mine broke). Looking back, it seemed as if juicing dark greens, especially cellery, every day put an end to this torture. It literally destroys my life."

IODINE

[YEA] 04/04/2010: Allmymarbles from New York City, New York writes: "For 30 years I suffered from ever-worsening insomnia. The cause was never found, but it was suggested slyly that I was neurotic. Ultimately I developed short-term memory loss and my exhaustion was profound.
One winter I developed a craving for clams and could not seem to get enough of them. I noticed that occasionally I had short periods of normal sleep. Then it hit me - iodine! I had myself tested for hypothyroidism. The result was positive. And I was furious. I never got help from the medical profession, lived for years as a zombie, and had to find the cure all by myself! Thanks to potassium iodide I sleep just fine. Although I started at a higher dosage, I currently take only four drops of 5 per cent solution a week. Now if I could get a refund of all the money I wasted on doctors who resorted to facile psychology instead of medicine . . . ."
04/05/2010: Flying Frog from Grass Valley, Ca, Usa replies: "Hello! I want to suggest you look into/try kelp tablets for your hypothyroidism--I prefer it to other sources of iodine because, of course, kelp is "found in nature" & contains many nutrients in a form that I feel is more compatible with the body than a synthesized form. Peace!"
04/05/2010: Janice from Coloma, Mi replies: "Flying Frog...How much Kelp do you take a day? Do you take it every day? Thanks"
04/07/2010: Kelp from Louisville, Kentucky replies: "I'm currently using kelp, two teaspoons twice a day, I saw the post about potassium iodide and found it interesting because I just ordered some potassium iodide. I'll keep your post in mind in terms of the number of drops that you started with. The kelp hasn't helped with sleep so far, iodide is much stronger so that may be the issue. Another consideration is that there are various types of kelp, bladderwheck is the strongest, so that one may work. I've only taken it once so far, was using dulse, and I noticed the difference, it certainly is stronger!"
[SIDE EFFECTS] 02/16/2011: Jp from Ottawa, Ontario replies: "Don't take your iodine late in the day, as that can worsen sleep.
If you use kelp you 1) don't get a lot of iodine and 2) may be getting heavy metals along with it. Check your source
Lugol's or Iodoral are sources of both Iodine and Potassium iodide, both forms of iodine that the body uses. You can make Lugol's yourself. Iodoral is the same proportions in tablet form."
[YEA] 01/26/2012: Mamallama from Deerfield, Ma replies: "I agree, iodine has helped my insomnia. I would have to take 2-3 mg melatonin every night and hated feeling dependent. I have been taking Lugol's for 5 days now (started with 2 drops of the 2% solution and have increased to 4) and I see an improvement. I have been able to decrease the melatonin to 1.5 mg and I feel pretty confident that I'll be able to eliminate the melatonin entirely! Even when I was woken in the night (something that would have me up for hours, normally), I was able to fall back asleep within 10 minutes or so.BTW, I take the iodine in the morning, in cranberry juice.
I have had other positive effects with the iodine but will post about them after I've been using it for a couple of weeks."
01/27/2012: Francisca from Zug, Switzerland replies: "Hi, I have just ordered Lugol's (5% iodine, 7% potassium iodide) because I am quite sure that I am iodine deficient. As you can't buy it anywhere in Europe I ordered it online. It is Hulda Clarks recipe and I have no idea how many drops to take. I saw the label on the site and it says one should take 6 drops a day, max. 3 days. This sounds like nonsense to me.... The lady selling it told me that in Hulda's book she advises 6 drops 4x a day for up to a week for stomach bacterial infections. All very confusing...... Dr. Brownstein says in his book that 1 drop of Lugol's 5% iodine and 10% potassium iodide amounts to 12,5mg. I think that the fact that Lugol's can come in so many combinations makes it very difficult to know how much to take. Right now I am at a loss so if anyone can help I would very much appreciate! As far as insomnia goes I also hope that Lugol's will help me. Please keep us informed of any other changes you notice, I will do the same. I will be taking Lugol's for the insomnia, falling, weak hair, puffy eyes, dry skin..... By the way, I thought that Melatonin was a great thing after reading a book about it. It is not sold here in Europe so it is not something I can try!"
01/27/2012: Lisa from Rabat, Morocco replies: "Francisca, one drop of Lugol's (5% iodine, 10% iodide) is 6. 25 mg. There isn't really a set amount to take, it all depends on the person. I think it is generally believed that a maintenance dosage is 50 mg. Many people take more depending on what illnesses they may have. It might be best to start out slow and gradually increase your dose since many people can have detox symptoms. I have been taking Iodoral (pill form of Lugol's) since last March and I am up to 62. 5 mg. I have some thyroid issues and uterine fibroids along with sluggish adrenal glands. It is also recommended that you supplement iodine with Vitamin C, magnesium, selenium and unrefined sea salt (like Celtic). I think it is best to take it all at one time early in the day since taking it too late can cause sleep problems in some.If you want to get some really good information I would suggest joining the iodine Yahoo group. The moderators are very knowledgeable and have lots of experience using iodine. The group owner had thyroid cancer and used very large doses of iodine to help cure herself."
01/27/2012: Eva from A'dam, Nl replies: "Francesca, you can relatively easily buy iodine in Europe, just need to google it while entering the right keywords. By the way, Melatonin is sold in drugstores in the vitamin section, I did not enter a store yet where it was not sold and I have also seen it in several countries. I am not sure if you live at a really small place, or you don't look at the right place, but I would be more careful with generalizations about what you can and can't find in such a large area as Europe."
01/28/2012: Francisca from Zug, Switzerland replies: "Eva, I do live in a small town now but I used to live in France near Switzerland and Germany. I looked everywhere but I never found any melatonin, they told me that it wasn't allowed in the EU, only melatonin percursors. I am not sure but I think that I also asked in De Tuinen when I was in Holland last year. I am going to the UK next week and I can try again in a very good health food store where I mostly go to."
01/28/2012: Francisca from Zug, Switzerland replies: "Lisa, now I feel even more hopeless... You say that one drop is 6,25 mg, Dr. Brownstein says it is 12,5mg.... I will try to find that Yahoo group and maybe I just start with one drop. I am taking vit. C, 1000mg a day, am using magnesium chloride transdermally (dilute myself in water) and will buy some selenium soon (I do eat walnuts most day as I picket a lot during the Autumn). I also take a bit of Celtic Salt now and then, apart from what I take in my food!"
01/28/2012: Francisca from Zug, Switzerland replies: "Thanks Timh, yes, melatonin percursor are allowed here. I tried one but it didn't really have any effect. I am not waiting to go the the UK next week and pick up the Lugol's I ordered on the Internet at my sister-in-law's. Actually my biggest problem is my husband's snoring. Once he wakes me up I have trouble going back to sleep and by now I am not used to sleeping all night anymore. When he leaves early in the morning I often sleep like I am in a coma just then I wake up too late and have difficulty sleeping in the evening again! "
01/28/2012: Timh from Louisville, Ky, Usa replies: "Francisca, if Melatonin is on the EU ban list, try 5 Hydroxytryptophan (5HTP) before retiring as it stimulates the penial gland to secrete melatonin. If 5HTP is not available try regular L-Tryptophan or foods high in T like Turkey."
01/29/2012: Linda from New Haven, Connecticut replies: "Mamallama, from all that I have read, Vitamin C (which is in your juice) is not to be taken at the same time as Lugol's. Lugol's is comprised of iodine and iodide and the Vitamin C will convert the iodine to iodide. For this reason I always take my Lugol's in water & wait at least an hour or more before I eat or take my suppliments (including my Vitamin C). Hope this helps.Linda :-)
http://curezone.com/faq/q.asp?a=13, 281, 2962&q=630
"Let's go through the titration process with a specific example: the titration of vitamin C by iodine. The chemical name for vitamin C is ascorbic acid. When Iodine and ascorbic acid are combined in solution, a chemical reaction takes place. In this chemical reaction, the ascorbic acid molecule loses electrons, which are transferred to the iodine molecule. Chemists call this type of reaction an oxidation/reduction reaction (or redox reaction for short). The ascorbic acid is oxidized to dehydroascorbic acid, and the iodine is reduced to Iodide ions. Oxidation-reduction reactions always occur in pairs like this. The molecule that loses electrons is oxidized, and the molecule that accepts the electrons is reduced."
We need ioDINE AND ioDIDE:From "Iodine, Why You Need It, Why You Can't Live Without It":
"It was thought that the intestinal tract could easily convert iodine to iodide, but research has shown this is not true. Different tissues of the body respond to different forms of iodine. The thyroid gland primarily utilizes ioDIDE.... the breasts, on the other hand, primarily utilize ioDINE....
Because different tissues concentrate different forms of iodine, using a supplement that contains both iodine and iodide is preferable to using a supplement that contains only one form, As mentioned above, the breasts concentrate iodine. The prostate gland concentrates iodine. The thyroid gland and the skin primarily concentrate iodide. Other tissues, including the kidneys, spleen, liver, blood, salivary glands and intestines can concentrate either form. With different tissues responding to different forms of iodine, it would make common sense that a greater therapeutic benefit from iodine will be achieved by using a COMBINATION OF IODINE AND IODIDE. My clinical experience has proven, beyond a doubt, that a combination of IODINE/IODIDE (e. G. , Lugol's or Iodoral) is much more effective than an iodide only supplement (e. G. , SSKI and most other liquid iodide formulations).""
01/29/2012: Linda from New Haven, Connecticut replies: "Francisca, I am taking the same strength as you, although I bought mine from J. Crows. I began with 1 drop a day (which is 6. 25 mg) and worked up to 8 drops a day (which is 50 mg) as Dr Brownstein reccommends. I'll continue with that dose for 2-3 months and then taper down to a daily maintaence dose of 2 drops a day (12. 5 mg) for life as recommended.Just be sure to take it on an empty stomach and wait an hour or so before before eating or taking any supplements (read my post earlier in this thread).
Linda :-)"
01/30/2012: Francisca from Zug, Switzerland replies: "Thanks Linda, I will pick it up on Friday evening so will start on Saturday morning. Funny enough I can't find the instructions of how to take it in Dr. Brownsteins book. Are you sure that one should take it one hour before eating? I hope that it can be done during the day or else I will have to wait for 1 hour before having breakfast, which is not always possible! I underline the books I read in order to find anything of importance more easily but I couldn't find that information...."
02/09/2012: Linda from San Francisco, Ca, Usa replies: "To Francisca from Zug,The number of milligrams per drop can differ very widely dependent upon the size of the dropper used, and additionally the exact mg amount will differ dependent upon whether the drop is released from a dropper held exactly vertically, or from a dropper which is slanted sideways at the time the drop is released. So it is a ballpark, but not precise to talk about how many drops = 1 milligram, etc.
Exact precision with Lugol's 5% (that's what I have) is not usually critical, unless there is some special case-specific medical circumstance. Lugol's has been in extensive use in the USA for more than 100 years. Its use and effects are well-documented and easily findable on the web.
Dr. Brownstein is a good source of info on this. Also there is an Iodine Supplementation forum (VWT Forum) on Curezone where many knowledgeable folks have posted their own experiences with it for several years.
I have taken from 1 drop per day to more than 15 with a standard-sized eyedropper orally off and on for months at a time, for probably 12 years now. So IMHO not necessary to stress about a milligram difference here and there. Just always start with less and err on the side of caution, and work up very slowly. I would not take it without having food in my stomach *first*.
If I am uncertain about its effects, I can paint it on my skin.
Linda"

I just turned vegan and was looking for something raw to sweeten up my food and desserts. It is KAKAO (cacao). Raw Chocolate nibs. You will find them in health food store. Take 1-2 teaspoon in the evening and chew it. I put mine in a coffee grinder.God, how well I sleep! I am not insomniac but used to have sleepless nights time to time and my friend with sleeping problems is already on it and sends me his blessings every morning so I hope it will help you also. Don't ask me if there is caffeine. I don;t know.It works. I use it when my schedule is craze and I sleep 2-4 hr every night and this is going for months sometimes.Being "on cacao" I fall in a sleep in seconds and wake up well rested. I just feel in the morning like a baby again! Please send me email if it works for you."
Replies08/25/2009: Susan from Vancouver, Canada replies: "Yes, I started using cacao (Cocoa) in the powder form. It is very healthy. I have researched it on the internet and it has the most flavanoids (immune booster) of any food. As well it is a pure protein. Do not mix with dairy as they block many of these nutrients."

L-GLUTAMINE

[YEA] 02/26/2006: Victoria from Florence, KY writes: "I tried L-Glutamine after complete colon cleanse and Candida treatment called ThreeLac. Insomnia was one of the symptoms that surprisingly disappeared. While L-Glutamine is an amino acid, and supports the body in many ways, I learned through this experience (and the guidance of a very good Holistic Chiropractor) that when this amino acid is first introduced into the body, the colon just loves it, and sucks it up. As the mucous membranes of the colon are regenerated, insomnia is one of the symptoms that fall to the wayside. I did use the L-Glutamine after a round of the candida treatment, which irradicates an overgrowth of Candida and helps to balance the pH levels of the colon and body. There is also product called HGH at night, which is rich in L-Glutamine, but this is not the original source that I took. I originally took a powder form, about 1,500 mcg. daily, first thing in the morning, as it is loaded with protein and jump starts the metabolism."
Replies12/06/2009: Wydo from Ventura, Ca replies: "I have a question for Victoria. I am very interested in the HGH at night product but I cannot find it sold anywhere. If you still have a bottle could you please post the ingredients here?
I have tried everything just about to help me get to sleep. I have just started taking GABA and it helps me get a better sleep but does not help me to get to sleep. A lot of suplements help at first but over time quit working so I cannot rate the GABA just yet. I do think you must be right about having a good bowel movement helping to make a better sleep at night. I notice when I have a good early bowel movement I can get to sleep better at night. I also have IBS so I want to work on that as well."

As a result I had to withdraw from my PhD program, for example. I simply would not be able to sleep at all, for months at a time. Finally a doctor put me on a very sedating antidepressant. It made me sleep but made me drowsy all day and I lost my short term memory. I got off that 2 years ago and have since had poor sleep but I have slept for a few hours. Anyway, 2 weeks ago I got a new episode. I would lay awake for hours and when I finally began to dose off my body would jerk and twitch so I would wake up again. And so it went on the entire night.
Finally I googled "insomnia and twitching" and got thousands of hits saying "magnesium deficiency". One site in particular said "if you suffer from insomnia, body jerks and twitches, chest and back pain and cannot take deep breaths, then you should take magnesium. " So I read thousands of sites and found one particular brand of magnesium that seemed to help the best. I assume I cannot mention the brand here but it's a powder form and you must mix it with hot water. Given the severity of my insomnia I didn't think a mineral would ever do the trick, but what could I loose? So I ordered it as a last resort before going to the doctor to get sleeping pills. I am not kidding you, day 1 was better, day 2 even better and since day 3 I have slept like a rock for 8.5 hours straight. My chest and back pain are almost gone and I can breath properly.
I have read countless of anecdotes by people discussing insomnia and magnesium. It seems as if absorption is a big problem. Please don't give up if the first attempt doesn't work. Go to the health food store and ask for the brand that has the best absorption. If you do get a good intake of calcium you may be magnesium deficient and may do better on magnesium alone. Otherwise magnesium and calcium is recommended. Personally I take 800 mg/night. Google it! Given my severity of insomnia I am blown away that it all came down to a mineral. WOW!!!"

I to have suffered from insomnia for many years and would have never guessed that it was magnesium related. That is why this site is so valuable for curing illnesses because it tends to promote the idea that "NATURAL PRODUCTS ARE THE BEST WAY TO CURE ALL MINOR ILLNESS THAT POTENTIALLY CAN LEAD TO IRREPARABLE SERIOUS ILLNESSES IN THE LONG RUN".Thanks Earth Clinic since this is not the first illness I was able to treat just by reading from the experience of others. Perfect example how Prescription and Over The Counter Drugs once again has no place in the human body! You might Google to find out which food has the highest magnesium content and change your eating habit accordingly. Mike"

01/18/2011: Zsaqwe from Brownsville, Texas, Usa replies: "Maria, what you describe is exactly how I had to live for 15 years. I hardly could cope with my two babies with that terrible insomnia. Please tell us what magnesium to take. There is many different magnesium. Which one? I found this info in the web. www.relieve-migraine-headache.com/magnesium-migrainesSo just what is the magnesium migraines connection? Researchers have been investigating the magnesium migraines connection because of magnesium's role in stabilizing blood vessels walls. Magnesium is also an important mineral when it comes to helping you get to sleep. Regular sleeping patterns are also very important to migraine sufferers. Magnesium also helps in protein synthesis, and keeps your bones strong and helps maintain normal nerve and muscle function. It was first suggested that a deficiency in magnesium could cause headaches over 70 years ago. It makes sense, because a lot of the things that cause the body to run short of magnesium also either trigger migraines or lower your resistance. For example alcohol, stress, and menstruation. Today we know that about half of the people who get migraines are also short of a certain type of magnesium (serum ionized). When faced with a migraine that won't respond to treatment, many headache specialists will give an injection of magnesium. You should be able to get benefits from long term (2-3 months or more) regular magnesium supplements.
The magnesium migraines link may make a big difference to many people. Certain types of magnesium are not well absorbed by the body. Too much magnesium, particularly the wrong kinds of magnesium, can cause diarrhea and simply make your mineral deficiency worse. Also, remember to take magnesium for at least 60-90 days to see if it makes a difference. If your body isn't absorbing magnesium well, try avoid these types of magnesium: Oxide, hydroxide, and chloride. Instead, look for magnesium types that end in "ate", particularly glycinate, but also gluconate, lactate and orotate.
Note: Very often two or more types of magnesium are combined, such as oxide and citrate. The best thing is to simply talk to your doctor and then try one kind and see how your body handles it. A note about calcium: Magnesium and calcium balance each other out in the body. If you have too much of one and not enough of another, it can cause problems. That's one reason why it's important not to take too much of one or the other. However, when taking magnesium for migraine don't buy a calcium/magnesium blend. If you're taking a calcium supplement, take it at another time of day. It can interfere with the benefits of the magnesium for migraine."
[YEA] 03/24/2011: Maria De Suecia from Stockholm/london, Sweden/uk replies: "Hi, I'm responding to those of you who had a question regarding which magnesium I was taking to treat insomnia. I posted this on 10/24/2010.Insomnia DESTROYED my life, beginning 6 years ago. I had to drop out of one of the best PhD programs in the world in my field. Sleeping pills didn't even work. I was put on an antidepressant, just for the insomnia, that is normally given to Alzheimers patients in order to sedate and calm them down. It D*E*S*T*R*O*Y*E*D my life. And now look.
First let me sum up, 5 months on after my magnesium discovery, and I still sleep like a rock. But I've discovered an even better magnesium. Let me tell you the exact experience.
I initially began taking a regular pill form of "magnesium carbonate", and it clearly helped a lot but I would still wake up a few times with these awful hypnic jerks. I did this for a few days while I was waiting for my order of this magnesium powder that people rave about on various sites.
I can't reveal the brand name because I think it will be deleted by Earthclinic. I totally respect that since the non-commercial integrity of this site makes it so trustworthy. If I tell you the following, then you'll be able to track it down: this particular brand of magnesium is in "magnesium carbonate" form and was developed by a leading nutritional researcher named Peter Gillham. Now you can google that and find the name of the brand. I'll take a shot at revealing the name as I have found it so helpful and I hope that Earthclinic will post it to help people. It's called: Calm Natural.
I take the magnesium only, but they sell a calcium-magnesium blend as well.
So I got the order of this powder and I had done enough research to know that, unless you have an existing kidney or liver problem, it is pretty much impossible to overdose on magnesium. I was in a state of panic because I did not want this awful insomnia to keep wrecking my life, so the first night I took 1200 mg of this stuff. Fell alseep instantly. Not one hypnic jerk. Nothing. Slept! Slept! Slept! I took this dose every night without getting a loose stool (which is an indication that you take too much). Day 4 I woke up with loose stool. But I didn't flipping care, it's better than taking sleeping pills or not sleeping at all. But at this point I reduced the dose a bit, still slept like a baby.
I kept thinking that it must be too good to be true since sleeping pills had not even worked for my insomnia/hypnic jerks in the past. But oh no, I kept sleeping, adjusting the dose so that I would take just the amount that my stomach could handle - sometimes diarrhea and sometimes not. With time I needed less and less and after a few weeks I could even skip a few nights here and there.
Now to the other big discovery. I tried magnesium oil. EVEN BETTER! Some points on my experience with magnesium oil. 1) I am using a magnesium oil derived from the ancient Zechstein seabed (google it) - many brands of magnesium oil get their oil from this place. It's the gold standard source. 2) Magnsium oil is better since it does not go through your intestine you can apply as much as is needed without getting a loose stool. 3) I began using this in conjunction with drinking the magnesium powder, not risking insomnia. Bloody h***ll, this works wonders! 4) Initially I rubbed this stuff all over my body, 20 minutes before bedtime. One must be prepared that initially it feels as if you have been stung by a swarm of bees, but it gets better with time, believe me, like 4 weeks or so of applying it daily and it will no longer sting. I did this combo for 4 weeks, every single night. After 4 weeks my magnesium levels seemed to have been built up enough so I only needed to rub it on my belly before bedtime. 5) Yes, it's a bit oily, but again, I don't flipping care, I want to sleep after 6 years without sleeping.
So where am I now? I no longer drink the magnesium powder and fall alseep without a problem just by rubbing the magnesium oil on my belly. If I have a feeling that sleep is a bit more rocky I simply rub my entire body with the oil.
One point to be made here is that the magnesium has helped me with the hypnic jerks that prevented me from falling asleep. I would have these hypnic jerks, what felt like, one thousand times per night. They drove me crazy! Now they are GONE! GONE! GONE! 6 years of hell is gone!!! I don't know if magnesium helps with regular insomnia when you just lie awake starring, perhaps calcium in combination with magnesium is a better option then.
In treating my adrenal glands I began taking a high potency (OBSERVE, VERY IMPORTANT: HIGH POTENCY) vitamin B complex, which I noticed made me feel much much calmer in general. I still take that.
There are other minerals and vitamins that can cause insomnia. I read about that somewhere. I remember one of them being Folate."

Phosporus is also very good but makes me too groggy when I wake up. Melatonin also makes me too groggy. I take Melatonin when I have had caffiene before bed and it knocks me out. I get the tablets and nibble the tiniest bit off of the edge and it works everytime but seems to be too strong for me and makes me tired during the day. For me magnesium is gentle and when I wake up I feel relaxed but not tired. We stayed overnight in New York City at my daughters boyfriends apt on a busy, noisy, avenue. I took my two magnesiums as usual but woke up in the middle of the night because of the terrible street noises. The next few nights I took 3 magnesiums (200 or 250mg's)and slept thru it all. At home I take two every night. Thank you so much for this website!! People helping People!! YaY people power!"

[YEA] 07/14/2010: Stephanie from Chicago, Il writes: "For two years now, I've been taking 400mg of Magnesium Citrate every night before bed and I sleep like a baby! My boyfriend takes it too, completely relaxes you and makes it easier to fall and stay asleep. I read somewhere it is the most 'relaxing mineral' and people need higher amounts of it as we age as it becomes depleted with stress. Major side benefit--it also just happens to eliminate PMS symptoms, fyi. Oh, and migraines! Also, make sure you are drinking at least 4-6 glasses of water per day if you suffer from any ailments whatsoever as most people are chronically dehydrated and have no idea why their body is deteriorating with age. Aging is a process of dehydration!"

This is on top of the Seroquel that I already take, which is dosed at 100mg. I usually start off with 3 mgs. of Melatonin, and if that doesn't help, I take another 3 mgs. (because the supplement that I take only comes in 3 mg. tablets).
The usual recommended dose of Melatonin to start with is 5 mgs., and then take it from there. This is a extremely effective supplement, and I would recommend it first before anything else."

The older she became, the worse it was, telling me to "get lost" when I came in the room at 11:00 p.m. She would just continue on the computer and ignore me. It was very depressing. I had to sleep so I would just go and leave her alone. Her dad didn't help much. Rescue remedy! melatonin! I bought the chewable kind and used to give it to her when I was totally exasperated at 10 or 11 p.m. Now I give it to her at 8 or 8:30 p.m. and now she jumps into bed by 9 or 9:30 p.m. What a miracle! Why did it take me so long to figure that one out? She was sleep deprived for many years!"

About 20 minutes after taking one I drifted quite naturally off to sleep. Now, I still take them occassionally, but usually just the thought that they're in the medicine cabinet is enough to relax me to sleep! Melotonin induces the body's 'down time' mechanisms which night owls like me tend to inhibit. Now I know to relax, read a book, watch tv, or just 'chill' about 20 minutes before bed, this behavior allows the body to naturally produce it's own melatonin and drift peacefully to sleep. - sleep tight!"
