Question:

Been trying ACV [apple cider vinegar] and VCO [virgin coconut oil] for my hypothyroidism of 18 years. Am feeling some changes, but am concerned about taking the VCO 3 times a day. A tablespoon has 120 calories and sometimes I take it warmed in rice milk-a cup would have 9 calories. That's 210 calories. At the minimum 3-4 tablespoons a day I'd be taking 360-480 in in calories of VCO. With the rice milk even more. I'm 59 and that would take up at least a third of my daily calories to maintain my weight. Gonna make my range of food intake extremely limited, I'm afraid.

After the ACV and VCO reduce the need for meds, do you need to maintain the same dosage of ACV and VCO to stay hypothyroidism free?

[SIDE EFFECTS] Laura from Orlando, Fl writes: "Hi everyone: I was recently diagnosed as hypothyroid and was put on bioidentical plant based meds. After using for about ten days, i noticed that i was struggling to breathe. This went on for about 2 days on and off until i decided to stop the meds to see if this could be causing it. Well it has improved about 80% but its still there especially if i try to do housework etc. I later googled hypothyroid symptoms and did found that one of the symptoms is air hunger. Has anyone had a similar experience? I would be grateful for any feedback."

Margaret from Cloverdale, Ca writes: "For anyone having trouble finding Armour (as one person in Canada mentioned), there is another product that in my experience is equivalent: Nature-Throid. I was first prescribed that by a doctor in Vancouver, BC. In the US my doctor continued that prescription, but sometimes when the pharmacy had trouble getting it soon enough, we substituted Armour. I can't tell any difference. Both work for me.

I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, with diagnosed thyroglobulin antibodies (but not peroxidase antibodies; not sure what the implications of the one without the other are).

I also have adrenal issues and find that taking Isocort makes all the difference in the world to my ability to think and have energy. Isocort is bovine adrenal gland that is supposed to be standardized to 2-1/2 mg. of cortisol per pill. It is non-prescription in the US, but I don't think it's available at all in Canada.

I am starting to experiment with EV coconut oil (2 Tablespoons/day) and Atomidine (the latter I've tried before by itself), where I try the Edgar Cayce approach of stimulating the thyroid via 1 drop of Atomidine in a glass of water on Day 1, increasing by 1 drop/day up to 5 drops on Day 5, then stop for 5 days, then repeat. I am wondering if such iodine stimulation is a bad idea or a good idea for autoimmune hypothyroidism, as stimulating the thyroid can, according to some theories, increase the autoimmune response against the thyroid. Can't say it's done anything so far, either way, now that I'm on Day 6 (nor when I've tried it in the past, except perhaps a tiny bit of improvement BEFORE I was on Armour/Nature-Throid, but I never continued long enough to be sure). The only thing that REALLY seems to matter is if I don't take my full 6 Isocort pills that I'm up to these days. (The Isocort bottle says you can take up to 8/day.)

I was hoping the EVCO would help the adrenals. I'll try another round or two of Atomidine starting Day 11 while continuing the EVCO throughout, and if I don't notice any changes from the Atomidine, I'll drop that and keep up the EVCO for another couple of weeks, and if THAT doesn't make obvious improvements, I'll work harder at alkalizing my body.

Vinegar alkalizes the body, but I'm reluctant to use it because I've heard from some sources it's not the best to use, especially if you have candidiasis issues, which I may have, though nowadays I think celiac disease is more of the problem.

So far no obvious changes one way or the other, but I have had the sense most of my life that my body likes the feel of coconut in my tummy, and it's not just the taste. I'll keep you posted..."

[YEA] Kaylin from Hampton, IL writes: "Iodine is curing my hypothyroidism! I have been hypothyroid for 11 years, ever since I was 19. My doctor says I most likely have Hashimoto's autoimmune thyroiditis, although it's never been confirmed by a test. I have been taking 60 mg. of Armour Thyroid 2 1/2 times per day. My dose has increased with each of my 3 pregnancies but I never felt any better and I still had a long list of symptoms. About a year ago I completely eliminated sugar and grains from my diet and lost 37 pounds, which eliminated a lot of my symptoms but I still had fatigue, hair loss, irregular cycles, and a lot more symptoms.

Two and a half months ago I read "_______" by ___________. I was convinced that I was Iodine deficient so I asked my doctor if I could start supplementing. He gave me permission but told me to go slowly and follow the book. I took Iodoral, the pill form of Lugol's solution. I started with half a pill the first day and I started my period one hour later (my first since breastfeeding my daughter, about 14 months after her birth). It was like my body was just waiting for iodine! My cycles have been 29-33 days since then, much more regular than they have ever been in my life (I didn't even start until I was 15).

Last week I had an annual physical and my blood tested and my midwife called and told me that my TSH is low and my T3 is high, so I'm in a hypERthyroid state! Tonight at church about 4 people asked if I'd lost more weight. The scale says no, but my dad says my face looks a lot thinner. A puffy face (which I've had half my life) is a very common sign of hypothyroidism. My midwife told me to cut my Armour Thyroid dose in half and have another test in a month. I'll update with results. I finally have hope of getting off of medication!"

[YEA] Amy from Los Angeles, CA writes: "I had a hypothyroid condition for over 10 years caused by Hashimoto's Disease where my body produced antibodies to attack my thyroid. I was told this auto-immune disease was completely incurable.

I had terrible toxicity symptoms from extreme fatigue, dizzy spells, memory loss, and multiple food intolerances. Anything that had pesticides, especially herbs, caused near anaphlyactic responses.

I was taking 125 mcg synthroid for 10 years. I never felt right.

I found when I took kelp, my thyroid increased but sometimes it went too high.

I did a lot of research on mercury fillings and decided to have a bio dentist remove them safely. I felt worse as they removed several at each visit. On my last visit, something remarkable happened. The next morning after my last amalgam was removed my basal body temperature returned to normal for the first time in my life.

I ended up in the ER because my thyroid became over active from the medication. The doctor looked at me like I was crazy when I told him it was because of my fillings. My tests confirmed that my thyroid was working on its own and I no longer needed medication. I have been free of hypothyroidism for 5 years now!

Please research the effects of mercury on your hormones. My endocronologist now makes all of her patients remove their amalagams. She has found great evidence that women in menopause can not balance their hormones until their old fillings have been replaced with more bio compatible fillings. No more silver!!!

It's also important to use chlorella or a product like ___ ___ ____ to remove remaining mercury immediately following your dentist visit after amalgam removal.

Good Luck!

Sangeetha from Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands writes: "I started taking EVCO since Friday night. I took 1 tbsp on Friday night and yeserday I took 2 tbsp - 1 an hour before lunch and the 2nd immeidately before dinner. After dinner I had loose bowel movements and went 3 times before I went to sleep and this morning too I had loose bowel movement. Was it wrong to take EVCO just before dinner? When is the right time to take it. I am feeling a bit better with my brain fog caused by hypothyroid, but its not completely gone yet, because its only been 2 days. I am taking 2 tbsp because I want to get rid of the brain fog asap and then I will go back to 1 tbsp as I am still on medication.

Also I was thinking of starting back on ACV (for my food allergies) once my hypothyroid is under control. I plan to take it only on weekends, this time for sure at least 4 hours after I have taken my thyroid medication. I also intend to continue 1 tbsp coconut oil for my hypothyroid. I will be sipping ACV throughout the day, so is it ok to take coconut oil while on ACV? Is there any particular time I should take coconut oil while on ACV during the weekends? I don't want to get my body into any kind of trouble by consuming both at wrong times.

I also read that coconut oil acts as antihistamine. Could that help me with my food allergies so I wont need to take ACV? All this when I am already allergic to coconut, but I have to do what I have to do to deal with my hypothyroid."

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] Cathy from Villa Park, Illinois USA writes: "I have been using Extra Virgin Coconut Oil since April of 2008. One tablespoon per day. I have Hypothyroidism and was having a lot of problems with brain fog. I was having difficulty doing my job and sometimes would forget where I was going when driving home for a few seconds. I am a creative person but was totally unable to express my ideas in artwork or my writing. I could not organize my thoughts. I could not make decisions or remember what I was supposed to do. This on top of all the other symptoms of hypothyroidism. 2 weeks after I started taking it the brain fog totally went away. I am very dependent on the coconut oil now as I do not want to go back to not knowing what I was doing. As for my other symptoms such as totally lost my sex drive which is destroying my relationship and sleeping too much and low energy etc. it has not changed any of that. My thyroid has gotten worse and I have had to double my thyroid medication (Thyroxine). I am working with a Naturalpathic doctor which was a very wise thing to do. She told me to keep taking 1 Tbsp of coconut oil per day. I just wonder if I should take more than that since I have heard of other people have been able to go off the thyroid meds when taking 2 Tbsp per day. She is also treating me for Adrenal Fatigue and cervical dysplaisia and fibrocystic breasts. I guess I'm a mess right now and just want to be well again. I am a big fan of the coconut oil because it is the one remedy that has made the most difference for me. Also I want to add that the doc specified I should use the solid coconut oil instead of the capsules which I started out on because she said that way you can tell if it has gone rancid. But I still use the capsules for backcountry trips and road trips for convenience.

If anyone knows a way to bring back the sex drive I would be grateful.

[YEA] Bridget from Philadelphia, Pa writes: "I'm not even sure where to start. Today is my 6th day taking ACV (Braggs organic). I'm taking 2 tsp along with 1 tsp pure natural honey mixed in apx 2 ounces of water, 3x a day ( before each meal.) Apx 2 years ago I developed a white mole directly under my eye, hated it and always planned on finding out about getting it removed. On day 4 of taking the ACV, I had gotten out of the pool and was rubbing my eye and noticed I couldn't feel the mole. I went to the mirror to look and could barely see it. Today is day 6 and it's almost gone! I have another dark mole on my arm that is also changing!

Another HUGE change this week are my bowel movements. I am hypothyroid, and normally when I'm eating healthy items such as alot of fruits and veggies, I tend to have a hard time producing a movement, but this week I have been producing at least once, sometimes twice a day, and they are very large healthy movements. I have also lost 4+ lbs which of course I also attribute to eatting better and drinking alot of water. I tend to go on these health kicks alot, for long periods of time, but this is my first time trying the ACV and I have been telling everyone about my dissapearing mole and my movements for 2 days now. I cant wait to wake up each day and see what else is going to change! Loving it, and I will keep you updated! Thanks, Mom in Phila

I have been experiencing hypothyroid symtoms as well as adrenal exhaustion symptoms for 6 months. My Medical Doctor did blood and urine tests as well as an MRI because I was experiencing headaches, low body temperature, extreme fatigue, earaches, muscle and joint pain. All tests came back normal. Liver function normal, thyroid normal, B12 normal, iron normal. Naturopath did allergy testing, autoimmune and thyroid tests. Thyroid TSH, T3 and T4 all were in optimal ranges. No allergies to foods. Negative to autoimmune test. I began on my own taking nutritional support for my Adrenals. I purchased a book and took all the recommended supplements for Severe Adrenal Fatigue. My morning temperatures were consistently in the lower 97 degree F. I ate well, eliminating junk food and sugary foods. My morning temperature dropped into the 96 degree F range. In desperation, I began taking Virgin Coconut oil, starting with 2 teaspoons on day 1, then 3 teaspoons on day 2. 3 Tablespoons on day 3. After 4 days of VCO 3 tablespoons a day I was able to do light exercise. Before that I was barely able to make it through a day. My legs felt like lead. I worked 4 days a week at a sitdown job and would be in bed for 3 days. After 9 days of 3 tablespoons of Virgin Coconut Oil a day I had nerve zapping in my right leg and right shoulder at night. Since that time I have had no nerve zaps and the pain in my left shoulder due to Adrenal Fatigue is 98% better. I have been able to exercise vigorously. If I reduce to 1 tablespoons a day my body aches. At 3 tablespoons a day I have energy and have no body aches. My morning temperatures have gone up a degree, 97-98 F. I've been taking Virgin Coconut Oil for a month and a half."

[YEA] Christine from San Diego, California writes: "I have been suffering with the symptoms describing hypothyroidism. Last week I started the EVCO and added the ACV, of course, decided to throw in the molasses. I will keep you all posted on my progress, trying to feel better and lose the 40 pounds I have picked up. Today I write because I have come up with a great drink. It kills two birds with one stone. Here goes:

ONE LARGE MUG
2 BAGS OF LIPTON CARMEL TRUFFLE TEA
ONE TBSP EVCO [Extra Virgin Coconut Oil]
ONE TBPS BLACK STRAP MOLASSES
ONE HALF TO ONE TBSP HONEY

POUR BOILING WATER OVER THE INGREDIENTS IN MUG AND STIR GENTLY WHILE STEEPING TO MELT THE COCONUT OIL.

I could not stand the taste of the molasses, however it is so yummy in this tea. Hope you like it. I have noticed since the evco and acv that like most everyone else, my ENERGY has soared, skin soft, body temp up, hair and nails gowing, dry seriously cracking heels softer and healing (using oil dirrectly) no more claritin, sleeping better, brighter outlook. This is only my seventh day. At first I seemed to gain a little weight, but just today I noticed the scale is down 1 pound. I am keeping at it and will keep you posted.

[YEA] Linda from Orlando, FL writes: "Hypothyroid / Coconut Oil: I suffer from hypothyroid and have taken levoxyl for about 7 years. I also have suffered with fatigue for most of my 47 years for a wide variety of reasons (anemia, depression, hypothyroid, sleep apnea, RLS). It seems I have every condition that can rob one of sleep and energy. Anyway, I was looking for a natural form of thyroid support and came upon information about coconut oil being helpful (about two weeks ago). I just found this wonderful site this week, which I intend to frequent OFTEN, and I thought I\'d contribute my experience with coconut oil. So far (2 weeks) I have a bit more energy. I have gained about 8 pounds since January (I tend to be slim), which I want to lose. I hope the energy helps the weight loss. I\'ll keep you posted."
