[YEA] Lindsey from Columbus, Ohio writes: "I have had 2 bouts of Hives after going gluten free. I believe contact with gluten is the culprit but I'm not positive. I had a very untimely breakout before Christmas and the only way I got through it was to drink tons of nettle tea and taking quercetin. Both suppress the production of histamine which causes the itching and ill side effects.

There are great supplements out there that contain both. I can't believe this hasn't been posted yet!

[YEA] Sarah from Littleville, Alabama, Usa writes: "Rub the inside of a banana peel anywhere you have hives. The itching will be gone in a second or two. You won't be sticky or anything, it soaks in just like lotion, nice and dry, not greasy. You still need to figure out the cause if it's a chronic condition, but you won't itch anymore!

[YEA] V. from Orlando, Fl writes: "I have had hives for over a year and a half now. I got it a month after the passing of my grandmother who raised me. Many doctors discard the fact that emotional changes can trigger hives, yet there are some that do not discard that. In my case, I have been diagnosed with chronic urticaria. I have experienced it all, swelling of tongue and throat, and huge welts on my skin and even my face! I was so desperate because I have been to 2 specialists, and all they do is keep prescribing different anthihistamines and steroids like prediscone, which I hate because the relief is temporary, yet the side effects are horrible and more permanent. In my desperation, I said to myself there has to be a natural way to cure this.

So, here is what I have done, and have been doing for a week now, and let me tell you, even though I cannot say yet that the hives are permanently gone, the difference is pretty much close to it. So I really hope this will help some of you: First, ACV does work. You have to however, get the organic ACV! That is very important! Braggs brand is the best. Bragg also sells pre-made ACV drinks which you can get at any health food grocery store, and they come in different flavors and they are all organic and natural. I started drinking ACV and it has tremendously improved my breakouts! I no longer get big welts, and I do get a few small breakouts on my legs, but they dissppear quick. Haven't had swelling since I started drinking ACV. The other thing I found really helps with the itching besides the good o'l aloe vera plant, is oatmeal body lotion! It's miraculous! Oatmeal is an anti itching agent. I rub it on my skin everyday and night, and the itching is gone almost instantly! I also use castor oil to rub on my skin! Yes, the combo of castor oil and oatmeal lotion really helps. There is something about the castor oil, that helps diminish the welts and stop them from coming out and spreading. They sell the castor oil you can rub on your body at the beauty section of any health food grocery store. It's amazing! So you may want to try this to see if this brings as much instant relief as it has done for me. Good luck and God bless!

Acv Lover from Dallas, Texas writes: "I have always handling high oxalate foods until recently, when I strongly overate them for months and started to develop chronic itchy hives. Once I figured out the whole oxalate problem, I went low oxalate.

But that's also where all heck broke loose from detoxing--miserable and constant hives. I am forced to take a benedryl at bedtime to sleep all night without hives. But they are back with a vengeance all morning and only subside by noon, and can return again at nighttime.

I am told that detoxing can take a year and more. In the meantime, is there any relief from hives caused by oxalate detoxing?

I was thinking of starting her on Vitamin C and L-lysine as I have read that these could be helpful for Hives. The problem is I have no idea whether L-lysine is safe for children to take. I wonder if anyone on this site can please advise me?

Laurie Anne from Ridge Manor, Fl, Usa writes: "After finding temporary success with many therapies such as ACV, digestive enzymes and an antihistamine diet, I am very pleased to share that I have permanently resolved my hives by taking lugols iodine 2% 2-6 drops, twice a day in water ( with 1/2 tsp. ACV when I remember ). As advised on other websites, I also am mindful to continue taking selenium, magnesium and vit. C, but not at the same time as the iodine (vit. C ). I have been suffering from this condition for 3 years and found it to exacerbate with heat, many different foods and stress.

Apparently iodine is beneficial for every dermatological condition, as it is used by every cell in the body, with increased use by the endocrine system ( yes it balances the thyroid, regulates estrogen production and diminishes cysts in the breasts and ovaries ) and the skin. You could easily substitute iosol iodine and take appx. 6-10 drops twice a day to get a similar effect. I recommend these two products because they have iodine and potassium iodide and the body needs both for optimal health. Iodine has numerous other uses and benefits and I am now recommending it to every one I know... It's well worth the cost and I have had no side effects except some fatigue for the first few days of use. Iodine will displace other heavy metals and I also advise researching "bromism" or bromine toxicity as well.

Alena from San Francisco, Ca writes: "I have been suffering from what I think is hives for the past two day. Some history-

For the past 3 weeks I have been on a liver cleansing diet (Fat Fl--h) toward the end of the 3rd week I forgot to take the suppliments and the physilium husk/ cranberry water as reguraly. Some one reminded me when you are losing weight especially fat then the toxins that are mostly stored in thoes fat cells get released in the blood stream and somehow have to be flushed out if you are not keeping regular bathroom visits it does not get out of your body quickly enough. The released toxins could be the reason for my hives? The hives developed under my chin and on my shoulder in the same area where I had a hard to get rid of pimple.

On this diet I have been taking-

milk thistle, evening primrose oil, flax seed oil and lots of ACV. I was already on a no sugar, no carbs, no beans, or dairy products diet for the hives I have tried castor oil rubbed directly on the affected area and started taking some caprylic acid. The hives are not increasing in area but are still very itchi.

Would love to hear any comments. It's ironic that I should get hives for the first time when my system has been cleansed. Perhaps it has to get worse before it gets better?

Firstly I'd like to say yours is one of the best natural healing websites on the net. Well done. I broke out in a severe rash of hives over the last weekend and I have never been allergic to anything in my life. The only change I have made recently is that I started taking Acetyl L Carnitine with Alpha Lipoic Acid as a cognitive supplement, which I might add is FANTASTIC in that regard. I started the ACL and ALA three weeks before the onset of the rash, which lasted four days and led to a short course of Prednisone and Phenergan. Could the supplements have been the cause of my new friend - Hives!
Thanking you. ItchyScratchy

[YEA] Laurie Anne from Ridge Manor, Fl, Usa writes: "The best treatment for chronic hives is digestive enzymes. If you do a little research on the Internet related to amylase deficiency you may be pleasantly surprised at how simple it is to cure this acutely miserable malady. I suffered for several years and have tried many alternative treatments, but Taking digestive enzymes with every meal and snack has completely eliminated the symptoms.... I use a generic brand from an herb company that has ox bile as an ingredient and has a blend of amylase, lipase and protease among others. This has been a very liberating discovery and has provided more health benefits than just the skin issues... Check it out!"

[YEA] Janet6 from Brooklyn, Ny writes: "I have been doing OP with virgin olive oil for over four years. This has now become part of my morning routine. The first week I started, I experienced a clean palate which I think resulted in my new experience of foods. I now enjoy my foods and eat with more gusto. My other observance was that I slept more soundly and felt more refreshed and energized upon waking. Each day I eagerly started my morning doing O/P and then a thorough brush with my regular tooth-paste and baking soda and salt. My breath definitely improved during the day. However, the most important and startling feature of this new practice for me was that it cured my hives. I suffered with this allergic reaction for more than 20 years and all I got from my doctors was temporary relief. I had been using Benadryl, Allegra, Zyrtec, Prednisone among many but when I started O/P, it cured my allergies, which came out in the form of hives ( raised irregular shapes all over my body which were crazily itchy and ugly). I could not even talk about them, I felt like they were listening and would re-visit me. After four years of O/p I think this is the most amazing thing that could happen to someone with allergies. I feel that anyone with allergies can benefit if I can. I have been passing on by word of mouth to all my friends and family and those who try it tell me the wonderful results they too are having. I believe this has even helped me with whatever pain I have had in my shoulders and knees. I have experienced expelling a lot of phlegm which I am amazed is in my body as I never seem to have a cold or cough. Over the years, my face has gotten smoother than when I was younger. No one believes how old I am and I will not tell. I have used sesame oil and sunflower oil and I like olive oil the best."

[NAY] Cheree from Adelaide, Australia writes: "My son has suffered from hives for months now, several trips to the GP offered no results. This web site suggested ASV which he tried for many weeks with no obvious results and also colloidal silver which he was taking orally 3 times daily and topically twice daily still no improvement. The rash comes and goes and some days it is much worse it terms of severity and coverage over his body than others. After 6 weeks his condition was considered chronic (urticaria) and he had seen the dermatologist twice still with no cause known and no improvement. He itches until he bleeds, is covered in little scabs where he has scratched, can't sleep because he itches and is becoming fed up. The doctors think it is an over active immune reaction to a small cold he had months ago but keep assuring me the condition will burn itself out, its been nearly 10 weeks now and we are still waiting. Kids at school are calling him a leper, he is 16 years old so says it doesn't bother him but I see it is all adding up. He is taking over the counter antihistamines currently ALLEREZE 10mg morning and night. Also PHENERGAN 25mg in the evening which is aimed at helping him get some sleep but also makes it tough to get him out of bed. About 3 weeks ago the Doc's suggested SINGULAR 10mg which is apparently an asthma preventative that they thought might help... $100 later still no improvement. Next step is to see a dietitian to rule out any food allergies. Love to know if any one else has any ideas???

[YEA] Amanda from Toronto, Ontario, Canada writes: "My hives started 8 months ago where I would get covered all over and was extremely itchy.... I proceeded going to my family doctor and he started me on reactine 10 mg as well as prednisone. As we all have experienced prednisone works wonders but the side effects are horrible. I was blowing up like a balloon. And my journey started from then on. I saw a dermatologist on numerous occasions and was put on all sorts of meds. Then I saw an allergy doctor and he did endless tests and put me on numerous meds. I also saw a Chinese medicine doctor who cleansed my organs... In addition I saw a homeopath/natural path doctor. The remedies that I was put on were very complicated, time consuming and expensive but NO results. It was then that I returned back to my family doctor once again to be diagnosed with Chronic Idiopathic Hives. :(((( This really affected me emotionally and physically. I would be covered from my face to feet. I was usually worst in the morning, at night and during my period week. With all that said, my search on the net lead me to this site and I'm so thankful that you have provided this window for us to communicate. I tried the ACV with baking soda as recommended and was seeing an improvement but then my mom informed me that baking soda is not good to be injested on a daily basis. SO I did some research and it turns out that people have had their stomach rupture after consuming baking soda. That made me stop taking it and I did ACV alone.... this wasn't as effective. So I came back to this site to see other recommended remedies. A lady had mentioned her parents suffering from hives all their lives and using L-Lysine and got cured. So I purchased L-Lysine and used 1000mg to beging with, I saw a slight improvement so I started taking one 1000mg in morning and one 1000mg at night. I also take reacine 10mg at night as well. This has erased all my hives away. I have none and I'll occasionally see one or 2 small ones here and there. NOTHING like before though. I'm so thankful to have found something that works but I have 2 worries. 1) It will stop working eventually. 2) Side effects of taking 2000mg of L-Lysine a day in the long run. I've done some research and it indicates that getting gallbladder stones may be a side effect with usage of higher doses. Does any one have knowledge on L-Lysine and its side effects? I hope this helps some body....

Thanks again to the person responsible for this page. All the best to everyone and Blessings!!

For the past 5 years of so I have been dealing with them with Cimetidine and Cetirizine. During warmer weather I can get by with very little but when it gets colder I need more. When winter hit this year it got really bad and I was taking a lot of Cimetidine trying to slow it down. Was not working and I was getting concerned. I found the information about using ACV and gave it a try taking it three times a day. Within 2 days the wheals where gone just a little iching or tingle left.
[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] N. Williams from Doral, Florida writes: "Hi All

I live in the Caribbean and 5 years ago I suffered with the worst case of Hives. It affected even my eyes and made the white appear soft and jelly-like!! I missed a lot of work, could not sleep in the nights and visited three doctors and one herbal doctor. The last Dr. was an allergy doctor who could not test me because of all the anti-histamine tablets in my body. Eventually I stopped taking the meds, because my body had just enough of it and started to take a blood cleanser, which worked. Granted that my hives were starting to go. It recently came back and because I am more knowledgeable about it now, than I was then, I read where a raw vegetable and fruits diet will help to clear it up fast. So I tried it, and my hives did not come on as bad as the first time. In fact, it is very tolerable. I continue to take anti-histamines...only in the night. I take the cleanser in the morning. And I only started drink ACV last night, so I have not seen any true results from it yet, but I feel confident it will work. I don't eat any fruits or veges that have a lot of acid. And I only drink water ( not alkaline ). I attribute mines mostly to stress because I have been under a great deal of stress when I had both episodes. Making the scarifice in your diet, and keeping your stress down, helps tremendously. You will loose weight but, if you want it to go, and to be able to sleep, try it...you have nothing to loose. I also read where taking Vitamin C is very good. I am also using it in 1000 mg strength. Hope I have offered some help here."

[YEA] Hives In AZ from Phoenix, AZ writes: "Thank you, Earth Clinic! I found your website while searching for something, ANYTHING, that would relieve and cure my hives. My first outbreak was July 2008 and they started as a general itching after I'd been in the pool. I was miserable with them until September when I finally went to see a doctor (after trying to take care of them myself--I thought it was eczema). The doctor gave me a steroid shot and told me to use cortisone cream for the itch and that they would run their course. By the end of September they were gone. They reappeared this year in late June. Not quite as bad, but one hive is enough to drive a person mad! I started on Zyrtec which seemed to help and dabbed Witch Hazel on them to relieve the itch (read about WH somewhere on the web). The WH seemed to work well, but soon lost its efficacy.

I started researching again and found this site and decided to try the apple cider vinegar (2 tsp in 16 oz of water as suggested, plus applied topically to the hives). Miracle of miracles, this is working!! I also added 2,000 mg of L-Lysine/day. Not sure if it's because of the ACV or the L-Lysine or both, but I can honestly say that the ACV works topically and they are clearing up with just a little bit of itching after about 3 days of this treatment. And they seem to be clearing in the order of their appearance: legs then arms and lastly underarms and a few on my back.

I'm also back to using the Witch Hazel for the little bit of itching and it doesn't seem to be as harsh as the ACV and is working great again.

Thank you! So glad I stumbled upon this site. I'll continue with the 2 tsp of ACV in my water as a preventative...."

[QUESTION] Middlebunny from Jersey City, NJ, 07302 writes: "Help Needed: Allergic Reaction/Chronic Hives

For the past month, I have had hives/itching and really need to find some way to resolve this condition as soon as possible. Although the itching just started at the end of April, I have been dealing with several illnesses over the past few years. Before I provide details regarding the allergic hives/itching condition, here's a brief medical history:

inoperable Right optic meningioma treated with a series of Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy from August-September 2007
Hair Loss/Thinning - assumed to be related to an auto immune condition triggered by the radiation therapy
Increased occurrence of Eczema in new locations post radiation: forehead, upper arms which eventually resolved about 8 months post radiation
Loss of taste sensation - resolved 3 months post radiation
Fibroid Tumors - 75% removed during abdominal myomectomy on 4/14/09 (more than 10); however, removal of all would have jeopardized the uterus.
Severe Anemia - discovered during April 2009 hospitalization for abdominal myomectomy and treated initially with Iron Infusion and several injections of Procrit (injections terminated due to onset of post surgical complications - see below). I was not previously aware that I was anemic.

About 2 weeks after my fibroid removal surgery (myomectomy), I was rushed to the hospital with heart palpitations, throbbing fingers, itchy palms and feet, and full body hives. This was diagnosed by ER doctor as a possible allergic reaction to either the Iron Infusion I had more than a week earlier or one or more of the medications I had been on since the surgery (percocet or nicoderm). The ER doctor recommended Benedryl and the cessation of all my medications: no percocet, advil, nicoderm. I saw the GYN who performed the fibroid surgery again on 4/30/09 and he discontinued the Procrit shots that I had been receiving to help with the Anemia. I saw an Internist on 5/5/09 who put me on Prednisone and Hydroxizine. This helped control the hives and compulsive itchiness. On 5/12/09, the Internist advised my blood tests from 5/5/09 showed extremely high Iron levels and suggested that this could be the cause of the allergy. Since it seemed that it wasn't the Nicoderm, the Internist OK'd me to start using the nicotine patch again. She also advised that I had a Vitamin D, Calcium and electrolyte deficiency and suggested that I begin taking 4000 IU Vitamin D and 1200mg calcium daily. Although a milder form of the itching has continued and I have had several recurrences of the hives, the Prednisone/Hydroxizine seemed to help. Unfortunately, it became obvious that the Prednisone/Hydroxizine had their own set of side effects: insomnia, hyperactivity, nervousness and compulsive behavior. Since I hadn't had a decent night sleep in over a month and had become a hyper, compulsive, neurotic mess, I discontinue those medications as of 1 week ago. I also started taking 10mg Ambien before going to bed. The Ambien seems to help; however, it will take a while for the Prednisone to leave my system. I saw a Hematologist 2 days after stopping the Prednisone/Hydroxzine who agreed that I shouldn't go back on those medications and should use Benedryl to control the periodic/recurrent break-outs of hives. He also advised that I was severely iron deficient so it is unlikely that I am allergic to iron. He believes the initial high iron level reading from the blood tests on 5/5/09 may be the result of my body's delay in absorbing the iron from the IV Iron infusion I had in the hospital. He thinks the more likely culprit of the allergic reaction is either Percocet or Nicoderm. As of 5/27/09, I have once again stopped using the nicotine patch but continue to have hives that appear and fade several times a day. The itchiness is always present but isn't as intense as it was initially. In addition, I continue to endure the itching. I took Benedryl several times over the weekend but didn't see any noticeable improvement. Since the on-set of the hives/allergy, I have had some relief from bathing with Apple Cider Vinegar, Baking Soda and Borax added to the tub. Unfortunately, this only offers temporary relief and I am not sure how more of the itching I can take. I feel like my skin is crawling. It has been over a month and I really need to get my life back. Can you suggest anything that will help?

[YEA] Sue from Bismarck, ND writes: "I had active hives for 8 months straight (they came on out of the blue) and was on antibiotics and prednisone for most of that time. As soon as I would quit taking those 2, the hives were back with a vengeance. After researching once again for a "cure", I came upon an ayurvedic remedy that has kept the hives under control now for almost a year. As long as I take triphala daily, the hives stay away. I have tried to stop the triphala, but about 2 days in, will start feeling the facial tightness and generalized itchiness again. So will continue taking it daily. It's a sight better for me than suffering with palm sized welts on my face and neck and the other smaller welts and bumps over the rest of my body."
