[QUESTION] Guppydas from Lamsai, Prathumthani, Thailand writes: "Hello everybody. I am writing this in a desperation as I have been suffering this condition for more than 3 years now and it got worst due to improper medical procedure. Please excuse me if I am too graphical in explaining the sysmptoms.

3 years ago, a small acne like boil developed on right thigh. Disappeared in 2 days. Only to appear a week later. Then it changed the location. This time, on left thigh. Sometime then I also had an attack of Herpes Zoster on my Left shoulder and left back. I was completely exhausted by this two infections.

Eventually after a month or so, Herpes disappeared, leaving pain in the spot which is more intermittent. However, the infection around thigh didn't go away. In fact it became more stubborn and aggressive.

I do not like to take anti-biotics as I know the devastating unwanted effects they have. Still I visited doctor and I was put on some heavy doses of Antibiotic. I was dead against use of any cut and drain procedure. I believed this could be sorted by medication.

With patience I kept taking the medication to no benefit. The infection spread, finally covering almost the entire region on buttocks, inner thighs and groins. It was painful, foul smelling and not improving at all.

All this resulted in extreme exhaustion and finally in May 2009, I was taken to local hospital for check up and treatment. I was given 2 units of blood, put on drip for 5 days. During this, without my permission, the doctors performed a incision to drain the fluid out. Did bring good relief. However the entire procedure was conducted in a very unprofessional manner. No local anesthesia or numbing aid was given.

Eventually this short lived relief faded away in 3 months. I was completely bed ridden for a month during July and August 2009. Finally to get admitted to a bigger hospital. Results of diagnosis came around and to my shock and surprise, I was found HIV .

However, the doctors were nice and explained me the benefits to do a proper incision procedure to drain out the infected area so that the medication bring about healing faster. I agreed. I was taken to the surgery room. General anesthesia and after 3 hours, I was back in my bed in my ward. Felt very good. For few months. Then, the reality started sinking in.

The wound was not healing at all. 8 spots about 2 cm wide and 1/4 centimeter deep at least were not healing up. Once again there was pus formation and pain returned. This happened relatively swiftly before I could get to doctors and get some medical attention.

NOW, cutting long story short, I cannot get any medical attention nor can I afford any. So a well learned friend of mine suggested to take Food grade H2O2. I started taking that about 10 days ago. I am taking 3% food grade in about a litre of bottled water (says no chlorine on the lable). Can't get distilled water here. Don't see much difference. The only thing I see different is sleepiness. I don't fall asleep but I am sleepy all the time.

Ok this is getting too long. I did cut it short. My question is, in addition to the above treatment, I wish to take mega doses of Vitamin C. Any suggestions, warming, comments, recommendation on this? Vitamin C H2O2? Any other suggestions to heal this wounds faster? I am held back due to this. I can't sit or sleep properly. I need to travel back to my Home country and infection holds me back from travelling for so many hours in an airplane. The discharge is foul smelling and is constantly painful. Any suggestions are welcome. Please please help. I am emotionally and financially broke due to this condition.

Thank you all for your support.

PS: No doctor has so far given any name to it. However looking on Internet, I found two conditions (two names) most fitting to describe this infection on buttocks. 1) Hidradenitis Supprativa 2) Acne Inversa. many misdiagnose it as Acne Vulgaris. Yes I have had inherent Acne problem all my life. I also have a long medical history. I can share if it is helpful."

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] Julie from Salt Lake City, Utah writes: "Hi everyone,

I'm 19 and have had HS ever since I can remember. I've had surgery to remove abscesses in both armpits. I remember being in grade school and not participating in gym because I could not sweat and risk having it resting on my skin all through school. My gym teachers never really believed me and just assumed I got a doctor's note because I was overweight and didn't want to exercise. This is an embarrassing disease and I'm sorry all of you had to go through it too.

Over the years, I've gotten better though. I do something that I think no one has mentioned after every shower I use sterile cotton balls and PUT RUBBING ALCOHOL on the areas that I normally get them (especially the open sores). Doctors use this to clean instruments and they go in first aids kits to cleanse burns and wounds. It sounds harsh but It doesn't make my skin dry at all. Once I started doing this, I barely even get any boils maybe one or two a month! :)

I also use softsoap antibacterial liquid soap or any other generic brand that is close. I look at the ingredient triclosan the higher it is the more antibacterial quality. I DO NOT USE bars of soap because they can carry bacteria on the surface, unlike liquid soap that comes in a bottle.

If you'd really like them to go away I would really suggest using the rubbing alcohol after showers and before bed (if you only shower in the mornings) and put on clean LOOSE clothes to sleep in. One last thing, it is very handy to put the rubbing alcohol in a medium sized spray bottle to spray on the skin during the day or anytime you apply it. (This is also great for spraying on public toilet seats to disinfect them. I also lay down toilet paper ALWAYS before sitting on public toilets) Sanitizing toilet seats (even my own toilet) before going to the bathroom has helped so much I hardly ever get sores down there anymore!

Soon I am going to start trying more natural methods like putting tea tree oil on instead of rubbing alcohol. I am also going to start taking turmeric (used in making curry) they say it has anti-inflammatory agents.

I hope this helps someone because I know how hurtful and embarrassing it is to live with this disease."

I have always had it on my thighs and groin area, but now in my armpits as well. I found that some people had success with Vitamin E since it naturally boosts your immune system. I took 3 of the 400 milligram capsles at night, and when I woke up the next day, the boils were already softer. I took 3 more that night, and they are even better today. The pain is gone, and there is just loose skin where the boils were. I am going to keep taking 3 pills a day as long as it works. Hope this helps."

Zinc supplements are giving me AMAZING results. A study in Nantes France showed great results, taking 90mg of zinc daily. I have followed this regimen for 2 1/2 wks. and have had no new outbreaks, and (dare I say) my infections seem to be healing. This is the first time since I have been in my teens,I am now 55, that anything positive has happened regarding my H.S.

I highly recommend zinc supplements, if you can tolerate it. I have had no side effects at all, although the study said upset stomachs could occur. That being said, an upset stomach is a very minor thing compared to the pain and discomfort with this sad disease. Good Luck to all who try this. I am AMAZED!!!!

Crystal from Wallace, Ks writes: "I just figured out what I have tonight on this site. I have had HS for 11 years. It started when I was twelve years old. It started on my neck, causing embarrassing/painful lumps that people could see. A doctor told me that is was in the "fungus family" and told me to use compound W. This got rid of it, and left scarred holes in my neck. A year or two later it started between my thighs and under my stomach, and the compound W had no effect other than severely burning. Tried fungus creams... My husband has been supportive, but I feel for and understand the self-conciousness for the women (or men)who are finding new mates. It is embarrassing. I can't believe a cure may have been in my cuboard the whole time (i may have to purchase the capsules)! Anything is worth a try. I was getting to the point of wanting to scald all of my skin with as many chemicals as I could think of to get rid of it...the turmeric seem like a wonderful alternative, thank you all for the info. I will try to report back if I find this cure helpful!"

Stephanie from Eugene, Or, USA writes: "Suffering from Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS), Looking for cures!

Hello, I've been suffering from HS ever since I can remember. I'm now 20, and my mother tells me I've had it since I was very young. Around the age of 11, I saw a [rather uneducated] dermatologist regarding the hideous and painful sores I had in my groin and inner thigh areas. After showing her, she actually had to consult another dermatologist, and refer to some Skin Disease Encyclopedia, based on what the boils looked like. This dermatologist offered me an antibiotic to treat it, and I remained on the drug for roughly 6 months, with no relent in sight. After the antibiotic failed, I was prescribed an ointment (clindamycin), which too failed to have any impact on the sores after months of diligent use. When all this failed, the dermatologist recommended intralesional injections-- they basically inject something (I don't recall what was in the syringe) directly into each boil. Left with really no other options, I agreed to take the injections. The dermatologist administered three injections one day, which were pretty painful (mostly due to the sensitive area of the body) and left scars, BUT scared off the boils. I had two more injections after that day before I couldn't take it anymore. The scars still remain, but I'm happy to say I haven't had any outbreaks in those 5 spots since the injections.

I went a few years in remission, with the occasional flair, however nothing I couldn't handle. About two years ago, I had another outbreak-- a very, very bad one. I didn't do anything about it, thinking it was just stress or irritation, and I'd go back into remission shortly. Long story short, that didn't happen, and the HS actually traveled north, so to speak, and I now have very embarrassing scarring and boils underneath my breasts. When I first noticed the spread to my breasts, I immediately called a dermatologist (a different one from the first, since I moved out of state for college). This dermatologist recognized the disease right away and seemed very familiar with it. She explained the lack of a cure for HS, and after telling her of all the medicines I'd tried years prior, she said the only option left was isotretinoin (sp?), aka Accutane. I was hesitant to begin a cycle on Accutane, since the FDA highly regulates the drug due to its connection with blindness, frequency of headaches, severe depression, and severe birth defects, if the child were to survive birth (miscarriage and stillborn children are common while on Accutane). However, with my options dwindling, I agreed to start Accutane. I'm currently in my third month, and have seen slight improvement, but nothing to jump up and down about. :/

I plan on seeing this cycle through (I have about 6 months left), but don't foresee anymore cycles. The risks are too high, and the payout is too low. I've read some other posters' remedies, such as epsom salt baths, tea tree oil, antibacterial bar soap, etc., and plan on giving some of those a try. I'm hoping something helps, because the condition is extremely embarrassing. I feel exposed, damaged, and don't feel like I can have an intimate life with my boyfriend, comfortably.

I am so happy to have found this site, it's a reminder that I'm not alone in my physical and emotional pain and suffering. I hope one day I live to see a cure for HS, and pray that doctors, especially dermatologists, become more educated on the subject.

Thanks, and good luck to everyone sharing this fight with me.

Tamplestiltskin from Deep In The Heart, Texas, USA writes: "I have been afflicted with HS for 19 years. I am what one might refer to as a "poor" person and have been for most of that time. I did not have access to alot of insurance, and when I did the results I got from modern medicine were unremarkable. Once I got pregnant the first time, my outbreaks became worse, and for the last ten years, there has not been a day where I did not have at least 10-15 bumps. Mostly I get them in the groin area, the rest are scattered around my breasts, thighs, stomach, buttocks and armpits. I've never had surgery nor never really entertained the possibility. I have had to relieve the bumps (relieve being a VERY poor choice of words) by using heat and sewing needles to pierce them myself.

Needless to say those are very painful treatments, and do very little if any good. The last doctor I saw, about four years ago suggested that because of my HS and because of other conditions I have such as rheumatoid arthritis (which I aquired at apprx. the same time)I most likely had an auto-immune disease, naming lupus as a possibility. After testing me for an auto immune disease he told me the test came back positive, however it failed to name the auto immune disease itself.

The last several years I have taken an interest in herbal and natural remedies (medicine women, etc) I stumbled upon this site quite by accident and was astonished at all the people afflicted with HS. I knew I wasn't the only one but I had no idea it could be so vast. I often feared, after my divorce that should I entertain another relationship.... in an intimate moment I might be accused of having herpes or something and in that way HS has made me insecure to a debilitating point.

I have been taking Turmeric capsules 500mg three times a day. Today was my second day. Yesterday I noticed mild relief and a subsiding of a massive cluster of bumps. I did not notice them today, however tonight they became noticeable and painful yet again. I realize that I have not taken it long enough, but I have hope and will continue to take it. I was wondering if there was a recommended dosage, I had wanted to maintain a regular dosage, but if I needed to increase it I wanted to know asap. I know that herbal remedies are not an exact science but then for that matter, based on the inability of modern medicine to combat this widespread problem, neither is modern medicine.

I plan now to go look up cures for my arthritis and can only praise this site for it's help, it's hope for the hopeless, and for it's affinity for natural ways to defend the body.

I hope that all the people who have gone into remission continue to stay that way, and I surely hope that anyone needing help and hope for this merciless disease stumbles across this place, (I know I will be spreading the word) I also hope that all of us who have yet to experience a bump free day, realize that goal very, very soon.

Since August I have been on Bactrim three different times. It helps while I am taking it but after about a week of stopping my lovely groin cyst returns as does the pain. The only thing that seems to dull the pain is applying heat directly to the area...not easy to do escpecially at work. I decided to try using a disposable heat wrap. I attach it to my underware, tape a gauze pad on top and it does seem to dull the pain. It also seems to
decrease the swelling of cyst.

I am wondering if anyone knows of a connection between HS and other auto immune diseases? I have Psoriasis and was diagnosed with Psoriatic Arthritis this past summer.

To the woman (or anyone ) who soaks in bleach water, please don't do that: Bleach suppresses the endocrine system; not safe at all especially when sick!

My MD prescribed a short round of Penicillin which helped me, but not for long. I then switched to coconut oil (medium chain fatty acids in coconut oil kill many viruses and bacteria). I also used oregano oil, (super Strength P-73). If it doesn't say P-73 on the bottle, it may not be the right oil. I also took adaptogens (Rhodiola, schizandra, etc.) to support my adrenal glands.

OREGANO: I filled two 00 gelatin capsules twice a day for 2 days with food, then backed down to one 2x a day. I also rubbed it on the skin as much as I could tolerate throughout the day.

COCONUT OIL: I took 4-6 coconut oil gelcaps 2x a day and also rubbed it on the skin constantly. Be aware that oregano oil can cause a temporary burning sensation. After all this; there is no evidence that I ever had a boil. Praying helped too, I'm sure.

What a horrible, HORRIBLE PAIN!!!

Most of the time, I do not get the bumps unless I skip several days of putting on the oil; however, even if I get a bump, it prevents any bumps from getting large. I have had some so large I could not even sit correctly. ____ patches are great for pain relief. You can cut the patch to the exact size you need. I am 49 and have had bouts with these since I was in my teens. About six months ago, I read about the oil in Isaiah 1:6 In the JPS version it reads "From head to foot no spot is sound: all bruises, and welts, and festering sores-not pressed out, not bound up, not softened with oil." I had pressed bumps allot, but I had never softened them with oil. The oil works miracles.

Miracle from Mission, Tx Usa writes: "well..I just started taking zinc gluconate for HS. Mayo Clinic recommends this as an alternate medicine. I had been doing well with just ibruprofen before when I would get the abscesses every month with my period under my arms. My family doctor thought it was hormonal so he referred my to an ob/gyn. I got lab work done and all my hormone levels are normal. The ob/gny then referred me back to my family doctor. Good thing that my friend is a surgeon and told me it was probaly HS. I had NEVER heard of such a thing...so here I am. I will keep you posted to see how the Zinc supplements (50 mg/ 1 a day) work."

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] Studentincalifornia from Oakland, Ca writes: "hello to all i was reading the Hidradenitis Suppurativa Remedies,i have been battling this since 11 off and on. had my sweat glands removed from arm pits at 12 so i know the pain but now in my twenties i had this lump forming under my breast and i knew what i was.i didn't want any cutting done to me, i still remember the pain and the disfigurement and scars. so it formed about 3 weeks ago size of a large marble but it felt deep. so i did the turmeric 1teaspoon with i teaspoon of organic cinnamon and half a teaspoon of raw honey.the cinnamon and raw honey has a lot of anti- fungal and other properties, mix it with half a cup of warm water twice a day,i want to take it three times but i am a student that works = no time. and i remember what the nurse told me when i was a child which brought it to an head immediately and started draining, was blow drying it with a hot hair blow dryer also i used apple cinder vinegar to help dry it out and of course tea tree oil. im on day 2 and it's totally flat. God bless i really hope this will help others. One more thing eat as clean as possible more veggie than fruit and drink turmeric regularly. thanks"

Kygirl from Owensboro, Ky writes: "I dont have a cure as of yet, but I am trying Turmeric about 2000 to 2500 mg a day, plus curcumin 500 mg for my back pain another prob i have and tea tree oil mixed with peppermint oil, and thieves oil. I have Hashimotos disease which is diseas of the thyroid. It is a autoimmune disease, I think this is part of my problem. Since the glands in the groin area are part of the lymphatic system and is suppose to excrete bad things, my body is overworked by my thyroid thinking there is an affection when actually I dont have one but antibodies in my body think there is one, if this makes since. People should do more studies about the Lymphatic and Endocrine system. Now, This outbreak has been worse than others in the past. I just noticed tonight as I am changing clothes for bed that I have a new boil that has broken out lateral to the one Im trying to heal! This is heart breakening, Im scared of the outcome for the future. I feel as though I may need the surgery and if it takes ripping out the glands that are clod causing this prob then Im all for this. I dont want to worry about how Im going to fix this problem every 4 to 6 months as well as it being uncomfortable wearing my favorite pair of jeans. I went to my gynocologist and he told me not to worry about it, that it would go away, this was two years ago. Meanwhile I have seen a dermatologist and they said that this was a gynocologist issue. My family physician did make a local incision and cut out the top layer of the infected skin and stitching up. It came back within in 3 months time. I am depressed every time this happens I feel my heart sink. Ive researched and found that the stitching after the excision might not be the best ideal. They say it needs to heal from the inside out and to leave it open with out stitches. I havent completely cut out artificial sugar, coffee, caffeine products. I dont drink cokes but maybe once a week or so, and I drink coffee everyday first thing in the morning. I love to workout, cardio and lifting weights, Im not over weight like some sites suggest may be a problem. I recently this year have had alot of trauma to my body though from back problems to surgery on my thyroid to remove two nodules as well a part of my thyroid. This is saturday night and I am definitely going to my physican monday after noticing this second boil. If anyone has any good suggestions please notify me at fitpta08@yahoo.com. This hasnt been as bad as other peoples posting Ive read, but anything in the groin area is painful i dont care what. I think I would rather have Herpies simplex than to have this problem, I DONT HAVE THIS BY THE WAY, BUT AT LEAST YOU CAN TAKE A PILL THAT CONTROLS THE OUTBREAKS!!!"

However, I will try the Tumeric, I have tried Hibicleans, Anti bacterial soap, natural deodarant and a host of other options, I will try this and let you know."

I also bought some of the kind thats in the spice form and "rubbed" that one my groin and I still feel no pain. I cant wait to see what happens in a week!! I am very excited. i am writing you the details of this antibiotic but would like to say one thing. this medicine effects on my daughter very quickly probably she is very young and respond immediately to this medicine. but as more adults are suffering with this.. i have a feeling its will take slightly more time probably it will take a month or more . but please try it. she takes one tablet everyday for the last 4 months. i dont know how long i am going to give this medicine but certainly not going to stop soon. at least she is not a victim of Hidradenitis Suppurativa anymore.

the name of the _____ is bee propolis. its a wood supplement. if you couldn't able to find it feel free to contact me.
