[WORKED TEMPORARILY] Bugsy1 from Los Angeles, Ca writes: "I\'ve been suffering from hair loss since I was 16 and I am now I\'m my 40\'s I\'ve tried many shampoo, medication and vitamin scalp injections and nothing worked. A doctor told me once that I have hormonal imbalance and nothing can be done to solve the problem. Lately, the itching and red bumps have been terrible. I\'ve tried apple cider vinegar which works but the itchiness comes back. My hair is very thin now and the hair fall hasn\'t stopped. Baby hair would grow but would fall off. I\'ve also noticed that when my hair falls from the root but the root is almost invisible.

Could you please help me make my own shampoo and let me know what food or vitamins I should take and which ones to avoid?

Thank you so much!

Heavy Metals and Hair Loss

D from San Diego, Ca writes: "I just submitted a post yesterday which was titled \"Questions about detoxing from heavy metals\". My main question was about the bolts in my knee from a surgery in 1988, if it were possible that the metals could be leeching into my system. And whether doing detox methods might be worsening the problem because the bolts cannot be removed.
One of the symptoms is hair loss (I\'m a woman, 43, of lower-than-average weight). I had also written this yesterday:
So I wonder if my hair-loss and other stuff has to do with my body attacking itself? Like if my hair is \"toxic\" because of constantly detoxing, that my body may be attacking it? The roots seem to be declining, fading away, and new hair comes in so baby-fine that it doesn\'t seem to stay in for long. I know the hair-loss isn\'t the main problem but a symptom, i\'m just using it as an indicator. My thyroid hormone level is back within normal range (back down to 4.5 from 7.5), so I\'m ruling that out as a possible cause. Another symptom is fibromyalgia-like, but with a hyperactive mind. So physically exhausted but amped-up at the same time. And Magnesium Chloride did not help with sleep. And there\'s other \"this and that\" inconsistant symptoms, not too drastic, but which could be attributed to so many other things too (like candida, deficiencies, ph balance, parasites, allergies, neurological restrictions, glandular, other toxins, altered immune system, IBS, etc etc).
I know that nuclear fallout from Japan could be a factor, being downwind from the jetstream here, but I would think there would be a mass epidemic of hair loss here if that were the only factor. (maybe there is but nobody is speaking about it?)
I stated in the other post a few of the methods (like oil pulling) and supplements i\'d been doing. I\'ve also tried the (expensive! ) hair product brand advertised all over the radio as being a sure thing for hair growth, guaranteed. It didn\'t help at all. Now I mostly use diluted baking soda, ACV, and aloe juice, instead of shampoo, and had done a bit of the Borax rinse. I\'d tried oils like olive oil and VCO, but that only causes more hair to fall out from the extra rubbing and rinsing. What\'s left of the roots is so miniscule and weak.
I just started taking Lugol\'s too. But now it seems I\'m losing hairs more constantly. Not in chunks (I don\'t have enough hair to call \"chunks\" anyways) but single strands. Often, a strand falling out catches on my arm and it feels like a spider web, it\'s so fine!
Could my immune system really be attacking my hair because of the metals and such collecting in it, from cleansing it out of my body?? So detoxing may also shed off my \"toxic\" hair? If that\'s the case, I guess I have to just let it all fall out until it\'s done??? That would suck, but if there\'s no other way...
Any suggestions, info, or comments are much appreciated! Thanks

Joy from Battleground, Wash writes: "I don\'t have any hair loss , but I read a lot and in the book by John Lee, What your doctor may not tell you about menopause, he writes that some people get estrogen dominant from our food, water, plastics and fertilizers, anyway, he says many people who get their homones back into balance can reverse their hair loss.

There is hairloss with thyroid imbalance and you can have an imbalance even if your tests come back normal , read the book by Mary Shomon, the thyroid diet revolution. It\'s not a Diet Book, but reviews of what helps to heal the thyroid .

Frequently a progesterone deficiency/imbalance due to estrogen dominance in men and women. Hope this helps someone.... Sometimes you just have to try a little dab and see if it helps

[NAY] Good Light from Granola Munching Tree Hugger Ville, Oregon writes: "Hi everyone. Thanks for sharing your great information. My hair started falling extremely fast when I started a new physical training program 10 years ago. I thought the hair loss was due to the new exercise stress on my body, but it turned out to be the supplements I was taking. It contained Creatine which was supposed to help with muscle recovery. Once I stopped taking creatine, my hair stopped falling out. I read that Creatine increases testosterone in women which can cause hair loss. Since I haven\'t taken the supplement in 10 years, I think there has to be a different issue now. Now, my hair goes through severe cycles of loss and growth. I was on progesterone replacement for a while which increased my hair growth, once I was \"level\" and stopped the supplement, growth stopped. I do think taking creatine was the initial cause and perhaps whatever change in my body for the hairloss to continue. I am taking the ACV and baking soda for Barretts esophagus and GERD. I am hoping the hair growth will be a pleasant side effect. My best wishes for you all to find your cure. :)

[SIDE EFFECTS] Tygiag from St Louis, Missouri writes: "Can\'t figure out what supplements are causing my hairloss. In the past I took an SSRI and it induced a significant amount of hairloss. I stopped the drug and regrew almost everything that I had lost. Since then, I have been on a routine to try and regrow my hair. I have been trying to replace the SSRI with some natural medicine to help my anxiety and all of a sudden my hairloss returned.

My supplements were:

3g Glycine, 3g Lysine, 1100mg of St Johns Wort and 200mg Curcumin

I have stopped everything because of the extreme hairloss. The Glycine seemed to help me the most, but I have heard that glycine can deplete taurine. Is this true and can that cuase my sudden onset of hairloss?

If not, do you see anything out of the ordinary that can be causing these issues for me?

[NAY] Mary from Corpus Christi, Tx writes: "I have been having hair loss for two years. It started when I moved to this coastal area. I also have a burning sensation on left posterior side of head that corresponds to a burning and gasy stomach. I have been to doctors and given antibiotics-yuck-which I took with regret but just hoping it would help. Right now I have itching in the scalp and occassional large dime size breakouts or sores in scalp. But I have the burning in scalp still. Do not smoke and little alcohol and I did give up coffee for 6 months with no improvement. Take vitamins and have tried just about all the suggestions- did for 6 or more months ACV, washed hair with distilled water and use borax for shampoo, take vitamins, had iron and thyroid and test for immune problems-all good. Any help out there? Thanks and God bless-yes and I pray!

Chergreene from Houston, Tx Usa writes: "About one month ago I noticed my hair was thinner and was falling out. I have always had very thick hair, so the change was noticable. Last week I noticed a bald spot on top of my head which is even much larger today. My first thought was due to medications.. Some I take are listed to cause this.. But apparently this usually only happens shortly after starting certain meds. I have been taking the same ones for a number of years with no hair loss. Until now. I am under emotional stress(lost my job, no income).. But a large baldspot???I don\'t seem to have any physical symptoms related to Lupus or thyroid issues. Common sense tells me this is not old age baldness because the onset was so sudden. I would like to try the apple cider vinegar remedy. How long should I wait to notice regrowth after starting applications? I am also thinking about pre-natal vitamins.. I remember a nurse telling me they were good for hair growth even if not pregnant. Any advise or feedback? I am a 59 year old female. Thanks!"

[YEA] Aurora from Palo Alto, Ca writes: "Hi, I just thought I\'d share my success with growing out my hair (even if not intentional). It used to be thin and stay shoulder length, it would break off, very fine and dry. This was when I was in my twenties and part thirties. Now, five years later, my hair is shiny, wavy and fairly thick, I cut it about a foot (12inches) every 9 months or so, it reaches my waist right now.

This is what worked:

1. stopped using commercial shampoo.

2. only wash with a natural shampoo with low alcohol content once a week (I started doing this after a trip to Italy, when I got some advise from a lady with enviable curly hair to her hips. She says shampoo is the worst enemy of hair; it strips it of nutrients, opens the fibers and makes it vulnerable to break off).

3. wash everyday (if needed) with a natural, low alcohol content conditioner, or even better; an olive oil based cleaner like available in Italy (not available were I live, so I realized I could use a lightweight conditioner). The reason the conditioner cleanses is that if you think about it; oils cut (mix with) oils. What we want to cleanse is the amount of oils in our hair, right? We don\'t want to strip out all the good oils from the hair, that makes it break... (commersial or harsh shampoos)

4.Rinse with COLD water when finished, to close the fibers in the hair.

5. Supplements; I started taking selenium, blue-green algae and alpha-lipoic-acid together (to control blood-sugar spikes). It seems the side effect of perhaps Selenium is to support hair-growth. I also took multi mineral or coral calcium and Sublingual Vit-B multi-vitamin in the evening from time to time.

6. Stopped blow-drying. Let air-dry, massage scalp with towel while drying (for blood-sirculation) and only brush hair AFTER its dry. With a natural brush, llike boar, or wood-comb (not plastic or metal - again these will tear and break the hair if it is fine like mine).

This is what I was doing, and it\'s so nice to have my hair back almost like from my childhood, too bad I didn\'t know to do this in my twenties! ;-) Good Luck!

Jojosmom from Raleigh, North Carolina writes: "Hi Ted. First of all. Let me say that I love your site. There is so much info to read. The world is a better place because of people like you! I have been having itchy, tingling dry flaky scalp for years, with massive hair falling out. It was coming out by the handful, every time I washed it. The ends are split and there are tiny knots in the strands. It used to be super thick, so much that people would ask me if I had on a wig. Now I can see my scalp in the front, the sides and the top. I tried the borax, Apple Cider Vinegar and peroxide wash, but my scalp is still itching. I also have thrush on my tongue and I was finally diagnoses with Tinea Versicolor. I have noticed, lately that I itch terribly after eating processed sugar, but now when I eat regular fruits. I was given a selenium sulfide shampoo, that has done nothing. I am pretty sure, at this point, that I have candida. My fingernails are splitting down the seam on one finger and the rest of my nails are separating from the nail bed. What do I need to do to address my problems? Thanks so much.

Erta from Portland, Or writes: "Hi, I\'m a 35 years old Caucasian woman. I moved to the USA in 2005 and felt under extreme stress financially. Exactly a year after my move, I started losing hair in chunks with huge white bulbs on each hair strand. It was so scary, I had never seen anything like it. This continued at least 8 months. I lost more than 2/3 of my beautiful thick hair. The hair loss was diffuse therefore I don\'t have bold patches as seen in alopecia. I have extereme overall loss on my entire scalp. My hair looks so bad that I cannot cover thinning areas anymore. When I visited Italy in 2007, my family was shocked to see the difference.

I follow a healthy mediterranean diet as I\'m from Italy. I\'m not vegeterian but don\'t eat too much meat. I exercise and never eat junk food. I\'m very healthy and active. I don\'t dye or dry blow my hair. So my hair is not chemically treated. I have always taken care of my hair in a gentle manner. I\'m 5. 9 feet and 129 pounds. I\'ve always been slim. My blood results were normal, no thyroid problems. The only thing was I have borderline iron and low ferritin levels, which have always been that way since I was a teenager. Ferritin 28 ug/L.

Both my mother\'s and father\'s side have full head of hair. Even my grandmothers, who are in their 80\'s, have much more hair than I have.

I read that once TE is over, hair would grow back. Mine didn\'t. No matter what I do, the thinning areas are not recovering. Is there a way to regrow my hair? I tried applying therapeutic oils, I use high quality shampoos, I\'ve spent so much time and effort on this, I\'m totally desperate and ready to give up hope.

Thank you

Gloria from Gaithersburg, Md writes: "I suffered sudden hair loss about two years ago; hair was falling out of my head, it didn\'t seem to be held in there tightly. It would come out in the shower and also during the day. I didn\'t know the reason, but I figured it was stress, since I\'d experienced a very stressful emotional crisis (involving harm to a loved one and worries about her) about 6 months previously, and I had heard that it can take 6 months for hair loss to occur following stress, OR the reverse; that it could take 6 months following \"healing\" to see results and hair restoration.

Unfortunately in my case, one crisis led to another, and I went through a period of about 15 months of a rollercoaster of stress. I had had stresses before in my life, but never had I lost hair over them.

I also want to add that I am currently 50 years old, female, caucasion, have not yet gone through menopause, have always had a very thick head of healthy, coarse/wavy hair. During this episode, I lost about 1/3 of my former volume. I have been alarmed to see a lot more of my scalp along my \"part. \" I think it is unattractive. It has made me sad.

But my dad is bald, and I\'d always \"heard\" that as women age, we might inherit some of the hair loss from our father\'s side (who knows). I hoped not! But I thought my hair loss, so sudden, might be from stress, rather than genetics. It occurred mainly on the top/front of my head (which is where my dad\'s is).

I am writing to let all of you know that I have tried many things and made many changes in order to hope to help my hair loss. I do think that some of them have worked, but I don\'t know which ones. The hair \"falling\" slowed down and then stopped. I am not sure, though, if I am experiencing significant regrowth or restoration, though I think so.

Here are the things I have done: I went \"no-poo\" -- in other words, I stopped using ALL commercial shampoos, even organic ones. I went through an adjustment period, but now my hair is much healthier. I clean it with rinsing with water most days, and baking soda or borax and ACV about once a week. My hair is long. I do not brush my hair except in the evening before bed. I don\'t use a hair dryer on it. I let it dry in the air. I detangle it and separate the waves with my fingers. I do not use any commercial products, conditioners, gels, etc. on my hair. For gel, I use aloe. For conditioner, I use coconut oil (a little goes a long way). For scent, I use a few drops of essential oil in a water rinse. My hair is soft and looks healthy.

I also worked hard to clean up my diet. I eat more vegetables and fruits and stay away from processed foods. I cook most of my meals from scratch (at home). I use organic foods as much as possible.

I started sunbathing (I am fair, so I do this only for about 10-20 minutes at a time).

I also supplement with biotin, vitamin D, B-complex, vitamin E. About 4 days a week.

I have worked on de-stressing using Bach Flower remedies and other energy therapies including massage and self reflexology.

I have worked very hard to help stop hair loss and hopefully restore my hair... So far, I think something is working. I am happy with my hair, though it is not (yet?) as thick as it used to be. It no longer falls out, and it feels \"tight\" in my scalp. It doesn\'t break off, either. I hope some of this can give some of you who are suffering with this problem, some helpful ideas to try.

I have been depressed and I think also weakned adrenals, but I think I fixed them now after following a strict schedule.

Nowadays I am only depressed because of the hair loss, it really depresses me and worries me. I am so scared I am going to lose all my hair. I had really really thick hair.

Before I was on medication, I had really a lot of gas problems. I had to go to toilet after eating because of the excessive gas, and it only progressed but has stopped since being on medication so I think I have enough HCL and stuff.

I took a hair analysis which showed I had low levels of manganese, copper, iron, magnesium, boron, molydebum, and probably iodine. I have been really healthy over the last years, 5 years or so. Eating mostly organic, a lot of veggies, no sugar, no addtivitives, no gluten and stayed away from milk products.

I did go on manganese before and it did stop my hair loss, but it did also deplete my ferritin stores. Whenever I take magnesium, I find my go low in manganese. Whenever I take iron, I get the same problem, or zinc. I dont know how to regulate all these. My stool are really weird and comes all forms, shapes and colors. I think there is something with my absorption?

Anyways, please please help me.. Iam so anxious and I have tried by best so far and.. I dont know what to do. Thanks ahead.

I have long hair and am 57 years old and over the past 3 years have noticed my hair falling out, along with seeing a scalp problem get worse and worse. I do remember that a few years ago a strange odor from the crown of my head when I scratched it because it was itching. I would sometimes be in a hurry when I washed my hair and not finish letting it dry by putting it up in a bun on the top of my head! I know that wasn\'t good and might have contributed to the crown area of my scalp having an odor. I have always had very thick hair until the last 3 years. I now have only 1/3 of the hair I once had.

I went to my doctor and a dermatologist and they had me on topical steroids and prescription shampoos. Which helped ease the itching but it seemed like it spread all over my scalp after that. Also the dermatologist didn\'t give me any explanations about what caused my scalp and hair problems. So I became desperate and came upon your website and Ted upon your recommedations for washing the hair with borax and water. It was amazing how soft and untangled my hair was after washing with it. My scalp felt very good too.

Unfortunately I began having some strange side effects right away from this such as burning in my chest area and I became very nervous and didn\'t do the borax solution again. I was so miserable with this burning in my chest that my mother in law suggested I take a tablespoon of her organic apple cider vinegar amish product that had some ginger and garlic in it. I took one tablespoon and had immediate relief from the burning which was probably acid reflux. I dont have a reflux problem usually at all. Could it be that the borax changed the ph of my body? It is a mystery or a coincidence that this happened.

Anyway, now talking about my present situation, for the past 4 days I have been taking ACV (2 teaspoons in an 8 oz. Glass of water) 2X a day. My scalp still feels itchy and there seems to be a slight calming in the scalp but the bumps and scales are still there, but I think my hair loss problem is slightly improving. I don\'t know what to wash my hair with. When I was in my 30\'s I took tetracycline for acne and nystatin with it. I took it over a long period of time. I probably messed up my stomach because I have sensitivity in the left side of my stomach or intestinal area I have a problem laying on that side of my body when I sleep at night. Any suggestions, Ted. Thank you so much for your time. God bless you and Earth Clinic!

Z_girl from Santa Barbara, Ca writes: "I am experiencing greater than usual amounts of falling hair. I\'ve tried adding hair vitamins, good protein in diet, adequate water, using safe shampoos, but the only thing that lessens the amount of falling hair, that ends up in my hands, on my clothes and in the drain, is eating several eggs per day-- they are free range, organic, omega -3 brown eggs. If I miss a day of eating at least 3 eggs my hair starts to fall out again.

Eggs are such a complex food its very hard to isolate what mineral or combination or minerals are helping my hair. I really cant eat 3 eggs every day-- not only because that is a lot of cholesterol, but I don\'t want to develop an allergy to them from eating them every day.

Additionally my nails and cuticles arent in that great of shape, but eggs sure helped at least the cuticles in short order.

Part of the reason I am so concerned about it, is that if I have a deficiency of some type I\'d like to find out before it affects something more serious than my hair.

Any help as to why the eggs are helping would be appreciated.

Robertn from Ann Arbor, Mi, USA writes: "Dear Ted, I realize you are a very busy person however I am writing you this letter out of desperation and frustration. A few years ago, I noticed that my hair coming out in large amounts on my genitals, which at the time were not as alarming as the itching the accompanied, it. The itch was ignorable, The hair loss has continued to spread to my under arms, and about a year ago I have seen it cause major hairloss on my head, in particular my scalp (the sides mostly) my eyebrows and my eyelashes have been falling out in tremendous amounts. I have also noticed that I have \"tiny bumps \"on my forearms looks identical to \"goose bumps or goose skin\". Along with that, all the hairs fall out easily clumps at a time, they all a white bulb at the end.

Some back ground information I have lived in a moldy house for a few years and have not been able to move due economic constraints. We also adopted a dog a few years back as well, who is outside a lot. (I am not sure if either that has anything to do with my condition) I have since started college and am now living in the dorms on campus, What is of great concern to me is that my roommate who I have only lived with for a couple of month is starting to suffer from the same hairloss on the sides of his head and eyelash loss and my question is what could this be? A fungus? A bacteria? A virus? And what do you recommend that I do concerning this matter?

Thank you for your time sir. -Bob

Bjornbjorn from Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada writes: "I will start out by telling you my problems and how they were caused and a little about myself. About 3 years ago I wanted to do a metal cleanse so I tried Zeolite, well that went bad in the worst way. I broke out in full body eczema and I mean everywhere, all over my face, arms, legs, back, chest and groin, at the time my hair started to fall out as well. I have since seen a naturopathic doctor and this has helped quite a bit, I now have a small amount of eczema on the back of my triceps and occasionally on my forearm, but nothing to complain about since the full body eczema. I havent had eczema since I was a little boy so I was surprised to have full body eczema from zeolite which was supposed to cleanse me of my metals. I have since found out that I need my amalgam fillings out before I detox from metals and my body\'s internal system wasnt in the proper condition to detox. I have cured my leaky gut and have stayed away from my food allergies.

Well over the last 2 1/2 months my scalp has been very itchy, so bad that I sometimes sit on the couch and itch like crazy for long periods, also my scalp is very dry as well as very dry hair. At times it feels so itchy its almost like there is something moving on my scalp but there isnt or at least nothing visible to the human eye (I Have had numerous people check) and my hair is falling out but only on the frontal region and it is falling out FAST. I have never had problems with hair and hair loss until my experiment with Zeolite.

I am a 30 year old male, I exercise 6 days a week (mixture of cardio and weight lifting), I eat all non processed foods, no wheat, I take chlorella powder daily (4-6 tsp), I dont know if this matters but I live in the Vancouver lower mainland of British Columbia Canada (very humid environment), I just started taking b complex (2 days ago) and Magnesium (2 days ago).

Please help me with my hair it is very stressful. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks in advance

Regards, Rob

Lainyw from Phoenix, Az, Usa writes: "Three years ago I had a sore in the middle of my scalp. Don\'t know if it was a bite, ingrown hair or allergic reaction. As the area became larger I decided to see a dermatologist. They took a biopsy and came back with alopecia areata. Had cortisone injections but they did not work. Scalp was itchy and sore, doctor recommended a duo- derm patch, three days on, replace with new one. Scalp went from bad to worse. Had an allegeric reaction to the adhesive, then infection. Now I have a very large bald spot on the crown. Hair does grow but under the scalp causing head to be very sore. Saw another dermatologist and became frustrated when he did not believe the adhesive from the patch prevented hair grow. Hope readers can offer some help/advice!

[YEA] Assaf from Tel-aviv writes: "Hello, I am taking magnesium for hair loss, that is magnesium citrate tablets, two a day, about 100% the RDI, for now a month, and have a lot of growth on my scalp, and in the beard actually too, which appear to come in fuller.

Magnesium seems to calm the scalp, or something similar, I think. I am taking iodine and phosphorous as well, as these minerals are lacking in my nutrition.
