[QUESTION] Celteyes from Pearland, Texas writes: "I was wondering if anyone has had any luck with regrowing hair after chemotherapy.

Before I knew anything about natural medicine I went thru chemo and radiation for breast cancer. Before treatment I had thick shiny straight hair but it had body and would hold a curl.

The stuff that came back is fine and kind of frizzy. My stylist calls it "angel hair." I even have an almost bald spot in the crown area. The hair on my body never came back. I only have to shave maybe once every couple of months. I keep thinking maybe it is a detox issue. I would really appreciate any info. After all these years I still miss my hair!
I am so thankful to have found this site. I love it.

T.leela from New York, New York writes: "HELP!! I am a 27yr old female suffering from HAIRLOSS. I have seen countless doctors and none of them give me hope. My family all has thick hair including my 65yr old parents. I have been to every specialist and they all give me minoxidil and spironolactone, however neither has helped the regrowth. Below is my most recent biopsy which was VERY painful and my doctors response was "ready for a hair transplant!" Again I am 27 and female and I am desperately seeking help. I am unable to interpret the below and was hoping someone could help. I would give anything to have my hair back to the way it was 5 yrs ago. Thoughts? Advice? Help?!?

Clinical information
1. 2mm punch. Mid inf. Scalp frontal submitted for DIF, B. 4mm punch mid frontal superior scalp: A, B:/Female pattern hair loss, autoimmune hairloss. 704.00. IDX mc

Diagnoses:
A. skin, mid inferior scalp frontal, submitted for5 DIF:Ã¥
- Positive lupus band test of IgM isotype

Comment (specimen a):
There is a fairly striking deposition of IgM along the dermal-epidermal junction and as well there is staining within the epithelium for IgA, IgM and IgG essentially defining a very immunoreactant profile. This profile is not dissimilar to other cases of androgenetic alopecia

2. Skin, mid frontal superior scalp:
- Non-scarring alopecia consistent with androgenetic alopecia

Comment (specimen b):
The findings are those of a fairly advances state of non-scarring alopecia. I would tend to favor a diagnosis of androgenetic alopecia. There is one terminal hair unit however that suggests the possibility of alopecia areata although I do not see frank lymphocyctic bulbitis. I am curious to know if in fact this patent has and clinical features of alopecia areata. If indeed the clinical presentation is more in keeping with common baldness I would interpret the process as an inflammatory immunogenic variant of androgenetic alopecia, especially given the very impressive immunoflurescent profile. We will destain slide B1 (D4-6) to see if we can actually identify any lymphocytes permeating the bulbar epithelium

Microscopic description
Direct immunofluorescent studies have been performed on specimen A, the results of which are as follows:

IgG: There is 1-2/3 fine granular staining of epidermal keratinocytes within the epidermis and hair follicle
IgA: There is a fairly intense granular staining in the sebocytes and other root sheath of a hair follicle as well as 1-2/3 fine granular staining of epidermal keratinocytes
IgM: There is a continuous band of 3/3 granular staining along the dermal-epidermal junction as well as 3/3 granular staining within the basement membrane zone of the hair follicle
C3: significant immunoreactivity is not identified
C3d: there is an interrupted band of 1-2/3 fine granular staining along the dermal-epidermal junction and within the follicular basement membrane zone
C4d: negative

There is an average normal number of anagen hair follicles however they appear shorter and thinner. There is a superficial and mild perivascular and slightly perifolliclar infiltrate predominantly of lymphocytes. PAS stain fails to reveal fungal hyphae or a thickened basement membrane. There are yeasts of Pityrosporum on the epidermal surface

[YEA] Kindee from Southbridge, Massachusetts writes: "I tried this brushing technique for hair loss and noticed a difference within a couple weeks. I really had my doubts, but truthfully I feel that nowadays I have less hairs falling than I ever have.

I always had really thick hair which I took for granted but over the past few years it had been shedding at a more and more rapid pace. It began to look thin, and I had a handful of maybe fifteen hairs nearly every time I ran my hand through it. Naturally I was panicked and self conscious at the age of 23, but was reluctant to use certain topical drugs and other unnatural "remedies." Since starting this technique once a day or every other day, along with decreasing my shampooing to two times a week (three max), my hair has looked great! Shiny, full, and I've had several unrelated unsolicited comments from people I know about the difference they noticed.

All I do is flip my head over and use a boar's bristle brush over all my hair until it's brushed (sometimes this requires pre-combing if it's knotted), making sure not to put pressure on the scalp, and I can feel the follicles being stimulated. Flip back over, brush it all down, and viola, treatment over.

No more clogged drains, no more hairy brush. I also quit eating beef; I wonder if this had anything to do with it? Either way, now I'm grateful for the hairs in my head, even though they're turning gray. Thank you earth clinic."

[YEA] Leelannee from Sussex, Nj writes: "YEA for biotin (hair loss)
YEA for iodine & borax (dandruff)

After the birth of my son 15 years ago, I had more hair loss every time I brushed or washed my hair than I had ever had before. I always had long, almost waist-length, thick hair. After the birth, I became so distressed over the thinning, dryness, & split ends that I cut my hair to chin-length. I kept trying to grow it long but every few years "chopped" it again due to split ends. My hair is medium-coarse and never seemed thin to people who cut my hair but I could tell the difference.

About a year ago I started taking biotin. I take 5mg per day, and I get a bottle of 300 capsules (10 months' supply) for $12, so this is a very affordable, no fuss remedy! It took a month or two to notice a real difference, but my hair loss became minimal. My hair is now so thick, and has grown past my shoulder blades for the first time in 15 years! Also, there are very few split ends--even though this doesn't make much sense, as only the new growth would be affected by the biotin, but it's true (a few months ago I bought some very sharp scissors and trimmed my split ends, but they haven't come back). And my hair is growing a little faster; it used to grow no more than 1/2 inch per month (I color my hair 3-4 times per year, and occasionally measure) and now it is growing almost 1 inch per month.

Another hair problem I had for about 20 years was dandruff. This started when I was 16. I tried many, many supplements, diet changes and topical remedies over the years with no results (except for a liquid zinc treatment for excema--this helped but didn't cure). I eventually tried a dandruff shampoo, which would give me relief for no more than 24 hours. I really didn't want to do this, but if I didn't I would actually get scabs in addition to incessant itching & painful inflammation.

A few weeks ago I bought a "liquid kelp" iodine supplement, took a dropperful twice a day in water and within 48 HOURS I had ZERO FLAKES! This is after 20 years of discomfort, self-consciousness, and not being able to wear black or use nicer shampoos! I recently found another supplement that has 150mcg iodine per drop, and I take 2-3 drops per day.

About 2-3 weeks after starting the iodine, I had a VERY slight return of the dandruff. But now I am not using dandruff shampoo at all. I shampoo, douse my scalp with a borax solution (1-2 tablespoons in 2 cups of water), let that sit for a couple of minutes, then condition. My scalp is super clean, I can go several days without shampooing (when I had the dandruff I had to shampoo every other day), and my hair seems softer & less frizzy."

Luca1979 from Birmingham, Warwickshire, England writes: "Hi there,

I have just read Ted's threads as well as all the other people that have contributed to this site. I am a 29 yr old male living in England and for the past several years been suffeeing with hair loss. I put on a brave face and have a bit of a laugh about my hair loss but deep down, it is very frustrating, hurts and a lot of my confidence has gone. i have tried saw palmetto tablets and fenugreek (2 tablets aday each) but I don't think it has made any difference. My hair is thinning from the front and on the top of my head (top is getting worse!). It seems to have got worse in the past year.

I don't want to take any drugs for it or undertake surgery. I'd like a natural remedy. There are many remedies on this site and I would like suggestions and advice from 'Ted' (who seems very educated about this area) or any other people who can tell me which supplements to take or what remedies to carryout and how much and when to take it. I just need clear instructions on what to do. There are a lot of remedies here but is making me confused as which one to carryout. Ideally, I'd like to stop hair loss but would be amazing for my hair to grow!

This is the first site that has been really useful and replies from sincere people. I am not expecting a magical cure but I am willing to try anything to help my situation.

If you can help me in any way or advise me, I would be very grateful indeed.

Thanks"

I want something i can drink to help cool my system down as my hair loss is apparently due to having too much heat in the body - well they need something to tell me so will acv help to decrease this or what do you recommend me to do?
[YEA] Terri from Nanaimo, BC Canada writes: "I am just starting to try the ACV this week so will let all know how it works for me. I am writing to let everyone know what has finally worked for me after dealing with thinning hair for 20 years now. My hair has always been very fine, but starting thinning in my mid 20's.

My thinning hair has been a source of embarrassment and concern to me for many, many years. Although I eat very healthy, use all natural hair products for the most part and take supplements, nothing has helped.

I tried Nioxin which made my hair nice and shiny and healthy but did not stop the hair loss or thinning. My hair loss was so bad that it plugged the bathroom drain and I had to put a snake down the drain to clear it. When I pulled up the snake there were handfulls of hair that had been lost over time. I was really upset at that point and decided to go to the doctor and have complete blood work done thinking that I must be very low in iron. My tests all came back normal although my iron was in the low normal range. I did some reading on this site (stumbled across it) and read a testimonial from one member who said that she had started taking Lysine, biotin and iron pills for her hair loss and she had great results. I bought the biotin 5000mcg, lysine 500mg, but decided to take 1 tablespoon of blackstrap molasses instead of the iron pills (they upset my bowels).

After only 1 month I can see any incredible difference already!!!! My hair is thicker, healthier, and is filling in nicely. More importantly it does not seem to be falling out at the same rate it used to. I had almost gotten to the point that I had given up on trying to find a "natural" cure to my hair loss and was ready to consider a hairpiece or transplant when it thinned a little more.

I had been struggling with thinning hair and the lack of self confidence that goes with it (you can spend a lot of time trying to cover all the thin spots) for years. Please give this an honest try even if you are fed up with all the things that never worked. It is worth one last try and the supplements are reasonably priced and won't do your body any harm. Good Luck to all!"

The only product that has given me immediate relief is Olive Oil. Mind you , it should be Extra Virgin Olive Oil (First cold press). The other ones dont work so good.

I apply a tablespoon of olive oil all over the scalp and hair and leave it at night and shampoo the next morning with mild shampoo. (The shampoo should not be harsh or which causes hair falls).

Right after the first application, my hair loss the next day reduced and after a few days application it has reduced significantly.

Now I hope i get back all my hair...And hope this information helps those who are desperately in need of the same.

[YEA] Dan from Bullhead City, Arizona writes: "I have found that taking Selenium nearly completely stopped my hair loss. With Organic Virgin Coconut Oil, I saw a little hair re-growth - not to mention a fantastic improvement in my overall skin and scalp health.

Mine is typical male pattern baldness, but it started when I was only 16 after a tough bout with Walking Pneumonia. I'm now 39 years old. Hair loss began early with me, most likely by way of an internal systemic fungal infestation that was allowed to flourish in the wake of the heavy antibiotics I was given for Pneumonia.

Read Ted From Thailand's comments on hair loss and causes. You need to detox and get heavy metals out of your body first, then treat with natural anti-fungal remedies and supplements.

When taking 400mcg of Selenium and two to four tablespoons of Organic Virgin Coconut (internally) each day, I saw some very modest hair regrowth. Just some; not a lot. I also was taking as many tablets of Acidophilus as I could to fight fungus in the body, since I don't think there's a way to overdose on Acidophilus.

Consistency is the key. I am not as consistent as I need to be, unfortunately. To see real results, I have to take the Selenium and Coconut Oil each and every day.

Scalp itching is part of my hair loss, and treating itching topically with coconut oil helps a lot.

It is my hunch that if you have dandruff, acne, hair loss, brittle hair, flakes in your eyebrows and crust around your nose or in your ears, you probably have a fungal infection. Again, read Ted From Thailand's recommendations."

[YEA] Mike from Sofia, Bulgaria writes: "I have to say I am surprised nobody has mentioned hair transplantation. All the remedies above are fine but I don't see many MEN who had a total regrowth of hair. I lost a large portion of my hair by the time I was 38. I had a transplant of about 5800 hairs from the back of my head to the top.

Now I have a full head of hair and don't need to worry about it anymore. It's been an amazing boost to my self confidence. If you have the money, do your research on the forums and find a top surgeon.

WARNING: There are many bad surgeons out there. A bad transplant is worse than no transplant as you can end up with a bad result and a nasty scar - so do your research!"

[YEA] Maiya from San Francisco, California writes: "I am a female, 53 yrs old. Three months ago my hair started falling out. My scalp was burning and I had red patches and itching. I had numerous blood tests done, but all the blood tests came out normal. I believe the hair loss and scalp problems were caused by an allergic reaction to Prozac, so I went off the Prozac immedietly (It takes 4 to 6 weeks for Prozac to leave the system). But I needed something that would stop the hair loss and scalp pain fast.

I tried switching shampoos and using other OTC products, but nothing would help. I lost half my hair. Then I read an article about Emu Oil for hair loss. I started using it on my scalp and got immediate results. The burning and itching stopped within 2 days and my hair stopped falling out. After using it for only 1 week, I noticed new hair coming in. I would highly recommend Emu Oil to anyone with scalp problems."
