Gray Hair Remedies

"Hair color is the result of pigmentation due to the chemicals eumelanin and phaeomelanin. In general, the more melanin present, the darker the hair color; the less melanin, the lighter the hair color. Considerable differences in color and texture exist between individuals of similar ethnicity, and immigration and global travel have greatly increased the diversity of hair characteristics among many countries. A person's hair color may also change over time and may be more than one color at a time.

Grey hair color typically occurs naturally as people age. (See Effects of aging on hair color, below.) In some cases, grey hair may instead be caused by a deficiency of B12 or a thyroid imbalance.

A change in hair color typically occurs naturally as people age, usually turning their hair to gray and then white. More than 40 percent of Americans have some gray hair by age 40, but white hairs can appear as early as childhood. The age at which graying begins seems to be almost entirely based on genetics. Sometimes people are born with gray hair because they inherit the trait genetically." (Wikipedia)

[YEA]  11/20/2006: Saf from Birmingham, UK writes: "Hi I'm writing about the posting pasted above. I've been researching into Amla powder. Amla is also known as the 'Indian Gooseberry' (Emblica offinalis) and has been used in India for hair for hundreds of years. It has a very high content of Vitamin C. I would say that it's more of a preventative measure than a cure for grey and falling hair.

Anjuli suggested Lemon and Coconut oil. If you wish to use these, you could definitely mix the Amla powder (available at Tesco supermarket in the UK as well as many asian/Indian grocery stores), into the oil mixture. Some of it will dissolve and there will be a grainy residue.

A lot of vegetable oils are very good for both the Skin and Hair. They are saturated with vitamins and nutrients. You can mix them together too and also use the purest essential oils. I find the following oils very good for the hair: Olive, Shea Butter, Mustard Seed, Coconut, Jojoba, Sweet Almond Oil and Thistle Oil.

Essential oils that you can mix into the blend of oils include Ginger, Rosemary, Lavender, Cedarwood, Benzoin, Sandalwood, Ylang Ylang. Only ever use the most purest essential oils.

If you add 5% Vitamin E Oil to the blend it will help keep it from going rancid for longer. Store the oil away in a cool place away from sunlight.

You can mix amla power into the oil when you dispense a little to use it.

Use the oil as an overnight conditioner by massaging well into the scalp and and hair. Wash it out in the morning. If you can't do this then massage it into the scalp and hair and leave it in for as long as you can even if it's only 15 minutes before a shower.

When it comes to washing out the oil. Massage shampoo into your hair first and add a tiny bit of water. If you wet hair first, it will be difficult to get the oil out.

A recipe for intensive oil treatment: 24.5ml Thistle Oil, 24.5ml Olive Oil, 3ml Vitamin E Oil, 0.5ml Vitamin A Palmitate, 50 drops of Rosemary Essential Oil, 30 Drops of Grapefruit Essential Oil and 20 drops of Ylang Ylang.

Or you can replace the above Essential Oils in the recipe by using the following instead: 15 drops of Ginger Essential Oil, 60 drops of Lavender Essential Oil and 15 drops of Cedarwood Essential Oil. Although the oils will improve the condition of your hair and stimulate the hair follicles and your scalp there is no guarantee that they will make new hair grow or get rid of gray hair. It may however help prevent an early onset of hair loss.

Hope this helps. Good luck and God Bless. "

EC: Hi Souad,

You can find companies that sell amla berry products on Google and Amazon.

01/27/2012: Kate from Maidenhead, Berkshire, England replies: "Souad, due to my hair loss I can't use the conventional hair dyes, however I found taking unsulphured blackstrap molasses 2 teaspoons twice a day for the last 3 weeks has turned all of my grey hair to dark black with reddish pigment. The copper in the molasses helps to change the hair colour. You can purchase it from the UK, Goodness Direct (by the way I don't get commission for mentioning the name of the company). You can also purchase Amla from the internet. Good Luck"

Amla powder is available at Indian specialty shops. Also a mix of coconut oil and lemon are beneficial."

AVOID CORN SYRUP

[SIDE EFFECTS]  08/18/2009: Jeannie from Franklin, Wi writes: "Avoid Corn Syrup - Grey hair

Someone mentioned that copper is needed for your hair to keep its color, and if you do a search, you'll find that's true. Americans especially are severely depleted of copper. I read somewhere that corn syrup sucks the copper out of your body, and corn syrup is in MANY of our processed foods, so thats no surprise. Blackstrap molasses, as someone else said, is one of the best possible natural sources of copper, and is a good supplement for many other problems as well. I'm nearing 60 and have only a few grey hairs, that started appearing after I hadn't taken any blackstrap molasses for quite a few months. When I take the molasses, my hair color slowly comes back. I just add it as a sweetener to tea, or make a tea of ACV and BSM. Takes a little getting used to, but I definitely look and feel better when I take it regularly."

12/09/2009: James from Bronx, New York replies: "I dont think the Blackstrap Molasses works for grey hair - I used it twice after I read these testimonials and I have to say that I noticed 2 new grey hairs in my beard today - I never get any grey hairs in that part of my beard, but after I used the BSM I noticed more not less grey hairs.

My only explanation is that even if its unprocessed - its still has the same negative effects as sugar. if its copper that retains hair color then I will be seeking that in another non-sugar product to try it out - I'm not over 40 yet and have some grey hairs.

I used organic BSM unsulphered from Paraguay. I probably will try it for a few more days but if I continue to see more grey hairs I will stop and will post that ppl wanting to stave off grey hair not fall for the snake-oil sales pitch I see being posted so much."
12/09/2009: Celteyes from Pearland, Texas replies: "Come on James.....you tried it twice and what...you think all your gray hairs were gonna be gone? Am I missing something? Is this a joke? Give it a chance, I haven't noticed anything with my hair yet, but I have noticed more energy and a feeling of well being. Oh and you know snake oil has positives also! hee hee Take care."
12/13/2009: Dott from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Usa replies: "Hi, I have another possible reason for grey/white hair. You MIGHT have a copper deficiency. Supplemental copper may help. My husband has served as the guinea pig for this experiment. He used to be teased a lot by family for his white-haired resemblance to wild and hairy Einstein photos. When I started reseaching causes of white hair, I found lack of copper in the diet is one. Then, I looked up foods high in copper, and discovered that my spouse didn't like ANY of them, and rarely ate any copper-containing foods. So, I got him a 2 mg. copper supplement, and he takes it daily. His hair is no longer white, but it is not that close to his natural color either yet, but it is getting there. I would estimate it to be about 70% grey yet, but it is improved enough to notice, his nape is quite a bit darker, his eyebrows are free of grey, his arm hair is darker than it was, and he told me just this morning that his chest hair is also starting to darken now. Supplemental copper is also apparently good for elasticity of the arteries to the heart---that makes you wonder if its lack might contribute to heart problems, but I haven't been able to find any indication of that online really. Still, we will take the bonus."
04/30/2010: Gabi from Toronto, Canada replies: "BSM definitely causes gray hair to grow dark. It happens after 2-3 weeks of taking BSM as your hair grow. It does not make hair getting darker! New darker color shows like roots on colored hair. When you stop taking BSM you will notice after couple of weeks more gray roots showing up again.

I was actually surprise that this remedy works so well. Regarding lack of copper: gray hair is just a symptom of it. I read that lack of copper is causing brain aneurysm and stroke in effect but do not ask your doctor if it is the truth.

Anyway gray hair doesn't mean you will get a stroke, you might be at higher risk of having one.
PS I am looking for advice how to deal with heel spur.
Soaking in Epsom salt helped my right heel but left got worse. Ouch! it hurts!"

06/08/2010: Lucy from Santa Cruz, Ca replies: "HEEL SPUR...too much uric acid in the system. I had to alkaline, and there is several ways to do that, but I chose lemons. I watched a doctor on a talk show who said he took 5 lemons per day for his health. I did 1 lemons three times per day. I don't remember how long it took, maybe a week and the spurs on my heel were gone."
07/03/2010: Larandee3 from Dubuque, Iowa replies: "Gabi from Toronto, Canada: Ask your insurance if they cover heel spur blasting. I had heel spurs in both feet, Had them blasted the right foot cleared up and the left foot was done twice then cleared up. It's been 8 some years and still no problems with my feet. I had them blasted during the experimental stage and it was done for free. I hope this is helpful. Larry"
10/13/2010: Ab from Indianapolis, In Usa replies: "My ash brown/blonde hair is graying. Has anyone with natural hair color other than black had good results taking unsulphured BSM?"
10/01/2011: Daniellejudith from Edinburgh, In replies: "Just wondering about using blackstrap molasses. I bought some, but did not see anything that said it had copper in it. Did I buy the wrong kind? With all that sugar, wouldn't it be better to take copper supplements? I found some on line. Just wondering what the difference is between copper supplements with no sugar vs BSM with sugar?"
01/30/2012: Helen from Milton, Nc 27305 replies: "Thanks! Now I know why my hair has gone from white to dark blonde and is getting darker! I will keep taking tablespoon of blackstrap molasses EVERY day. I am 84 years old and you can imagine the stares that I get!!!! However, I love it and my hair is so ALIVE, just like a child's new hair. This has happened since the last of April, 2011! My children are almost afraid to ask what I have done! Now I can tell them. I am also eating raw apricot kernels daily to prevent cancer so did not know which to credit the new hairchange to to!! "
01/31/2012: Debbie from Melbourne, Australia replies: "Helen, gray/white hair is caused by a copper deficiency. Copper deficiency according to Joel Wallace is related to heart disease and blockage (among other things) so keep doing what you are doing, not just for your hair benefits.

What brand Molasses do you eat. Mine is very high in iron (and iron is an antagonist of copper) so it didn't work."

No idea whether the pills help but I know that scientists have been working on finding something to keep hair color. I have the very same problem but I am more than twice as old as you are. Still not nice.... And I would love to stop dying my hair. I do drink a bit of molasses once in a white but not too much because of it being so sweet so, I have never noticed any change! Now I am off to dye my hair once more, believe it or not....."
01/05/2012: Debbie from Melbourne, Australia replies: "I think gray hair is a mineral deficiency. If science comes up with a pill to stop Gray hair it won't help the underlying problem, that is a mineral deficiency."

10/25/2011: Mg from Dubai, Uae writes: "Hi! I started taking BSM about 4 weeks ago. I take one big tablespoon in the morning with warm water. I have 25% grey hair towards the front of my head and at 29 it makes me feel much older than my peers and makes me feel very depressed.

I don't see any change in colour as yet. Please can someone help to tell me how long it would take to show the results."

Replies
10/25/2011: Jay from Toronto, Ont, Canada replies: "To Mg from Dubai, Uae. Some people have had success with taking BSM for hair loss or premature grey but it does take time whatever the protocol used.

Be aware that on average, hair on a human's head grows about a half an inch per month.

If your treatment is successful you will see the new growth coming in in your natural hair color.

So over time you would see your natural hair color at the root end of the grey hair as the hair grows and eventually you can cut the grey ends off."

10/26/2011: Francisca from Michelbach-le-bas, Alsace, France replies: "Of course, no one wants gray hair, that is normal, neither do I but I wonder if anyone has tried the supplement which is often advertised on the top of the main page on this site.... Any good results or hasn't anyone tried? I am a bit afraid of trying things bought on the Internet as you never know what is in there! It can just be a scam to get your money and it may even damage your health, I don't know! Just curious...."
10/26/2011: Gavin from Manganui, Northland, New Zealand replies: "A lot of natural oils mimic Ostrogen, if one of these is rubbed into the hair follicle it stimulates it to grow, There's an old Indian remedy that works, the oil can be bought in Asian shops. Bhringraj oil. You could also have poor thyroid function if so that would cause hair loss. So maybe, up the iodine. Small amounts of coconut oil rubbed into the scalp are beneficial as well."

I really need help."

[YEA]  10/04/2011: Starhawk from Houston, Texas Usa replies: "There is an alkalyzing protocol by a man named moreless which uses blackstrap molasses and lemon juice and extremely diluted calcium hydroxide and water and kelp. This protocol has cured many diseases including candida even though there is sugar in the blackstrap molasses; this is due to the fact that candida cannot exist in an alkaline environment; so basically this is about creating the correct ph level in the body. Also I believe it is the lemon juice that activates the minerals in the blackstrap molasses to it can be absorbed. His protocol is on another website so I don't know if I can mention it, so try googling Moreless ph balance, or moreless alkalyzing drink of if interested contact me and I will send the recipe. Also different types of baths are included to also alkalyze, but what I am saying here is that perhaps this is a safe way to take blackstrap molasses because the body is alkalyzed and candida will not be a problem. Moreless is no longer on his old forum but has a new forum, if you can email me do so or I will check back on this post. Starhawk Houston Texas."

Have you tried any of the other remedies on the Gray Hair page?:
http://www.earthclinic.com/CURES/hair_gray.html

I would guess that where you live, something like seaweed should be readily available. Also, it's non-prescription and it should be quite inexpensive too. Remember that the life cycle of each hair is a few years, and the hair shaft above the scalp is dead keratin, so it won't change back but new erupting hairs you will be able to see if they're dark. The amount of bound iodine in seaweed can vary greatly, like by a factor of 100, but Iodine isn't the top reason for seaweed in this case. As a living plant from the ocean, it will have most or all of the trace minerals that are mostly missing today from any land soil-grown food plants. The one specific trace mineral that gets mentioned repeatedly as being deficient in gray hair is COPPER. It is also necessary in reinforcing the arterial walls to prevent aneurysms. It is usually available in a 3 mg dosage tablet copper sulfate.

http://www.livestrong.com/article/172218-supplements-for-gray-hair/
According to Oregon State University's Linus Pauling Institute, loss of pigmentation is one of the many symptoms of copper deficiency, since copper has an essential role in the enzyme processes involved in melanin formation. This is a trace mineral, meaning that the body needs only a small amount. While too little copper can contribute to health problems, too much copper can also be unhealthy. Consult a certified nutritionist to help determine the right dosage before supplementing copper to help with graying hair.

Kelp: Sea-based foods like kelp are high in naturally occurring minerals including iodine essential for the proper function of the thyroid gland. Unfortunately kelp has fallen out of favor in Western diets due to its salty taste. Whilst in Asia recently I remarked how uncommon it was to see people under 70 with gray hair, this is due partly to their wholefood diets and consumption of sea-based vegetables. #

Fermented Foods: long implicated as being essential for a healthy digestive system. Most cultures have a version of fermented foods which provide local beneficial bacteria for the digestive system. Examples include miso, Kimchee, Sauerkraut, yogurt, Kefir, sourdough breads. Many of these you can make yourself using easily obtained base products.

Then there's Foti:

Many traditional methods use herbs to eliminate gray hair and a popular Chinese herb used to get rid of gray hair is Foti. Foti is the common name for polygonum multiforum. It is a climbing vine with red stems and white or pink flowers. It is grown in central and south China. It is known to grow to a length of 30 feet. [YEA]  12/29/2010: Deb from Melbourne, Australia replies: "The best remedy for gray hair I have found is wheatgrass (juice or powder). When I started taking a combination of the juice and powder, I was shocked after a couple of weeks that I had large patches of dark hair growing. In about three months I could see the dark hair moving from the back of my head slowly to the front. Interestingly I found that the strands went dark from the roots to where my hair dye had grown out. There was no gray and then the dark started growing. I believe that the hair is like a piece of chalk you place in a glass of ink. When you drop it in the ink the whole thing turns dark. A strand of hair when given the proper nutrients also fill up. I gave my sister wheatgrass juice and powder and the same happened to her. It was more noticeable as she had more gray. Within a week you could see dark hair peppered all over her scalp. Wheatgrass contains so many nutrients including copper, so it is fantastic to take every day. There is much information on it on the web. I had fantastic blood results by taking wheatgrass."
12/29/2010: Sue from Virginia, Usa replies: "Did you buy it in powdered form, or in capsules?
Also, a question for some of you biochemists out there: I read that oils can remove pigment from hair, which makes sense given the many people who report that oil-pulling removes stains from teeth --maybe oil lifts pigment from surfaces. But oil is also used as a conditioner, and at least one reader mentions using castor oil on eye lashes to darken them. Does anyone know more about oil/pigment etc? Or do various oils do different things?"
12/30/2010: Deb from Melbourne , Australia replies: "Sue, I buy it in capsules because it is easier to take. I take about 10 capsules per day (5 in morning and 5 in evening). You have to keep it up because I stopped the wheatgrass and started on the Super Greens and my gray hair returned. I am now back on the wheatgrass capsules. It also keeps your body alkaline."

I also sometimes buy drink fresh wheatgrass juice (in a shot glass from a juice outlet). The capsules I buy are a brand from New Zealand which says "Certified Organic. A Guaranteed Shot of Authentic Sun Grown Wheat Grass". I am not sure I can tell you the brand on this website. They also sell the powder. You could probably google them. Cheers Deb"

also i have type II diabetes. because i am unemployed and uninsured i could not take my prescribed insulin. i just could not afford it. i googled natural cures for diabetes and found out that unsulphered molasses would cure and regulate blood sugar. it suggested using it twice daily would do the trick. recently i went and had blood work done for my diabetes and the results were that my blood sugar levels for the past three months very normal. again i contribute this to the ubsm. i am certainly not saying that one should not take their medication for diabetes but the addition of ubsm certainly cannot hurt as it is low in sugar. you would to talk to your doctor about it first. anyways usbm is working for me . i really believe that it works but in a very slow way. have patience and hang in there. have a good day. donald"

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  01/11/2010: Bsm from Shanghai, China writes: "I moved to China in the age of 24 coz of work requirements, before that I had absolutely no issues with my hair, in fact they were great. By 26 my eating habbits were totally changed and I wasnt eating home cooked food and religious factors stopped me from various foods. At that time I noticed few grey/white hair appearing in the beard and head. They were few so I didnt care much but when I was 27, I started seeing a lot of them.. i believe it was a little early for me as I had no genetical problems for hair in my family.. I did a little research on google and tried using coconut oil/vaselene/medicated shampoo and almost everything but I realized that its only helping in a minor shine and conditioning for a temporary time and hair grows from inside out not outside in.. so it wasnt helping much and didnt convince me.. then i read about Blackstrap molasses on the web.. I tried to find it but finally I had to go to HongKong to get it. I have been using it for almost 3 months now regularly and by the way its not unsulphered.. its organic (pure blackstrap molasses).. in the first month..nothing happened, 2nd month.. some white hair started falling..3rd month.. I started seeing white and weak hair falling down regularly and some white hair r getting brown back to its original color only from the tip not from the roots..the pure white hair are also catching brown color very slowly.. my beard is still unchanged coz i think hair is very thick there and i shave almost everyday..so after 3 months there are some results finally.. lets say out of 30% white hair i am left with 22% (not a great achievement anyway)... I never used hair color.. I would just say that if you plan to use BSM then be patient.. results are definite but u have to wait for a long time.. I think after 6 months I will start getting it back more quickly..i m not sure about beared but lets see..the other effects of BSM is that i have gained weight a little..but there is another thing i noticed.. I havent even caught cold from the time i started using BSM.. I m catching no flu..although i travelled to cold places in different countries..i interact with sick ppl too sometimes..but i think its coz of BSM..and also i avoid restaurants.. i prefer eating at my apartment.. i try to keep balance in diet..meat/veg/fruits/milk..I include them everyday.. i dont use any special shampoo now.. i just use a herbal one.. mild shampoo without much chemicals..

its worth trying..good luck!

anyone has same results especially for beard.. plz share nov_2@hotmail.com"

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  07/25/2009: Jeannia from Salem, OR writes: "Last year at 50-yrs old I began seeing silver hair and wanted to nip it in the bud, and found this site on gray hair. The benefits of B/S Molasses(BSM) purchased at a health food grocery store has been that my new hair growth is my natural color. I began taking BSM January of '09 and a "warbonnet" of 2" of natural black hair is quite visable as of July '09. I intend to keep faithfully using this habit.

At first I experimented with coffee then switch to 3/4 cup of filtered water microwaved (hot enough to melt the molasses), 1 Tbl BSM, an allspice mixture (cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg) measured to taste, and 1/4 cup Vanilla Soy Milk. [all measurements should be adjusted to drinking container size] I add the BSM & spices together in the hot water to dissolve then add the soy milk to cool down to drink, and to me this taste like pumpkin pie. As to the allspice measurements I premix together in a spice jar and add according to taste. In the beginning I sprinked to get the right flavoring and viola! found it. During the cold months I wanted more flavoring and as a warm drink, now that it's warm using less flavoring for an iced drink. This is a versatile receipe limited only to your imagination -- enjoy."

I am 61 with no grey hair although small parts occassionally turn grey then reverse. One coin sized patch turns white if I get a bad shock that 'freaks me out' then gradually recolours. This has happened twice that I can recall. Another small patch can turn grey if I eat the wrong food then gradually recolours when I stop eating the problem food. This has happened a couple of times since I first noticed it 15 years ago. It takes a couple of weeks for the colour to fully return. I eat gluten and dairy free, with very little meat and lots of raw foods, fruit, nuts, juices and cooked vegetables etc plus nutritional suppliments including B vitamins. I also use soy milk but am currently changing to raw goats milk. My husband's hair went grey at 60 when he went on a prepackaged diet with many refined foods including white flour and sugar, dairy products and cheese. Now he has stopped that diet the colour has mostly retuned to his hair. I will add BSM to my diet for taste nutrition and hopefully a healthier look."

06/13/2009: Rena from Mineral Bluff, Georgia writes: "Hi Rob From Manhatten,

I've been experimenting with the herb Polygonum Multiflorum, and it does seem to be working but it is very slow. I was at about 35% gray, but recent pictures tells me I have decreased in gray, and natural hair color is coming back little by little. At first I thought I might be under 10% gray now, but the pictures tells me it's more like 20% still gray (wishful thanking I guess). I am making my own tincture, and it seems to be working better than the health food store pills. I still want to give it more time, and am not giving up.

I started taking the health food store capsules back in Mid January, 2009, with little effect. Then started making my own Tincture about Mid March, whereas I started noticing some results. So in essence I have decreased gray hair by about 15% in the last 3 months. It is stated on herb pages that it takes approximately 6 months for desired results. I am hoping I can report even better progress within the next 3 months.
My partner who is 62 has thinning hair along with gray hair, has only been taking my tincture for about 2 months. He told me his feels like it is getting thicker, and pictures are showing a slight difference. We are both hopeful, but again it is too early to be conclusive. I will report back in a few more months and let those who are interested know. Peace, Rena."

It's too soon to tell if it is working for my grey hair, but my skin seems to be getting darker. I took zinc supplements for years for my joints. I found out that zinc depletes copper from the body. That is probably why I started turning grey at age 28. Copper is responsible for coloring our hair! It turns out that blackstrap molasses is full of copper. So in theory, blackstrap molasses should work for grey hair. I have talked to one person who had a relative in her seventies with no grey hair. The relative said that her secret was that she too a spoonful of molasses every day. I will write back in a few months with an update on my grey hair."

09/27/2008: Alain from Ottawa, Canada replies: "What is blackstrap molasses? Unsulfured Blackstrap Molasses is preferable to fancy or regular molasses. It has less sugar and is more concentrated in minerals. If it does not say "BlackStrap" there is a good chance that it is not it.

Here is something from Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molasses

"Sulfured molasses is made from young green sugar cane and is treated with sulfur dioxide, which acts as a preservative, during the sugar extraction process. Unsulfured molasses is made from mature sugar cane and does not require treatment with sulfur during the extraction process. There are three grades of molasses, Mild or first molasses, Dark or second molasses, and Black strap. These grades may be sulfured or unsulfured.

To make molasses, which is pure sugar cane juice, the sugar cane plant is harvested and stripped of its leaves. Its juice is extracted from the canes, usually by crushing or mashing. The juice is boiled to concentrate which promotes the crystallization of the sugar. The results of this first boiling and removal of sugar crystal is first molasses, which has the highest sugar content because comparatively little sugar has been extracted from the juice. Second molasses is created from a second boiling and sugar extraction, and has a slight bitter tinge to its taste.

The third boiling of the sugar syrup gives black strap molasses. The majority of sucrose from the original juice has been crystallized but black strap molasses is still mostly sugar by calories; however, unlike refined sugars, it contains significant amounts of vitamins and minerals. Black strap molasses is a source of calcium, magnesium, potassium and iron. One tablespoon provides up to 20 percent of the daily value of each of those nutrients. Black strap is often sold as a health supplement, as well as being used in the manufacture of cattle feed, and for other industrial uses."

Regular Molasses (1 tbsp) vs Blackstrap Molasses (1 tbsp)
Iron (mgs) 1 vs 3.5
Calcium (mgs) 40 vs 170
Potassium (mgs) 290 vs 500

Before this I had to dye my hair every few weeks to cover the grey that was threatening to overtake my dark hair. After six months of taking the two remedies daily I was able to stop colouring my hair!!! I couldn't believe it! Now I can actually see when I pull the odd grey out that they are gradually turning black at the folicle. It takes a long time, but the results are definitely worth the wait! I'm not sure whether it's the vitamins or the molasses or if they work together. Daily intake seems to be the key. Also I feel healthy and relaxed. Good luck!"

06/01/2009: Brian from Denver, CO replies: "Leilah from Baltimore: 17 is a very young age to be experiencing loss of color. And just b/c your parents had similar experiences, doesn't mean that the same thing didn't cause the lack of color --- For example, it's likely that both you and your parents eat the same kinds of foods. Is it possible that these foods are low in copper and other vitamins? In fact, it's even more possible that the foods your eating actually are stripping copper out of your system. For instance, sodas and sugary foods leached vitamins and minerals out of your body. So does stress. Are you a worrier? Are your parents? Constant stress causing the body to use up minerans & vitamins at a faster rate, leaving less nutrients to give your hair its natural color. Thus, if both your parents & you are worries, then it's likely that habit that is causing the loss of color. Change the habit, change the diet, change the CAUSE, and you'll change your hair color. Good luck! YOu can do it!"

I hadn't seen them in so long I'd forgotten I ever had them. The grey appears lessened as well. It is not a dramatic thing; it's taking a long time but it's definitely showing more and more. I now take BSM as I need the iron and calcium in it. If it appears this hair color process is speeding up due to the addition of BSM, I will post back. I think it all greatly depends on your own nutritional status, so what works for one may not work for another. Definitely have patience! Hair can take a long time to show effects."
01/05/2010: Sarah from Auckland, New Zealand replies: "Hi, this answer is for Deepak, Frances and Guest Mother (hope it's helpful). I have used different brands of vitamin B supplements - we get many brands (that I'm unable to post on this site) in NZ. I think just as long as you are getting B6 and B12 with all the other B varieties in your supplement. I would like to emphasise that taking the molasses and B vitamins took a long time to show an effect (6 months to a year with a regular daily dose). As I mentioned before I am unable to write specific brands here - the site forbids it! Anything calling itself organic unsulphured blackstrap molasses should contain the same ingredients. Incidentally, I still take 2 tablespoons of BSM and B vitamin supplements daily and am still free from all but the odd grey hair. I agree with others on this site, though, that a healthy diet is also important. Frances and Guest Mother - you may like to try the B vitamin supplements as well as the molasses. Can't really help any more, sorry. Hope you start seeing results soon, I know how frustrating it can be."

So, yes, I added more vit B in the form of brewers yeast. Now I can see auburn highlights so clearly around my face (on the temples and just above my forehead). My natural colour is ash blond and these auburn highlights look quite different from my natural colour but it is still better than having these patches grey. My grey strands, however, are still there on the rest of my head. I found a few strands with brown roots but the white rest. So it is definitely helping but slowly. 06/12/2009: Nopey from Arkansas, USA replies: "Hi there BSM is very rich in copper. BUT when it comes to melanin and pigmentation Zinc also plays a role. So perhaps you actually are getting enough copper but not enough zinc. B12 is also great with folic acid when it comes to repigmentation of the skin and hair. Perhaps your problem is not enough b12 or folic acid even though you are taking a supplement. And last but not least if you are having any digestive issues it could be masking a vitamin mineral deficiency so as I always say get to the root of the cause.

I am very intersted in the connection between vitligo and premature grey hair and if it is both a b12 deficiency or a copper and zinc imbalance..but from what I understand they are all interelated. I also think it is so intersting that the melasma ( brown spots) caused by hormone fluctuations are also affected by zinc and copper, at least when it comes to me. The more zinc I take the more the pigmentation disapears...

Earth clinic any ideas?

Nopey

Good luck"

I have been taking Blackstrap Molasses for the last two months and don't see any results for the gray hair. Maybe it's due to the brand of the Blackstrap Molasses which I have took. Could anybody out there who have taken Blackstrap Molasses and their hair color has reversed back to their original/previous hair color could be kind and considerate and do write or tell me what type of Blackstrap Molasses brand which has reversed back your hair color. I would be really happy and glad to know the brand. Thank You & May God Bless You"
