Apple Cider Vinegar Cure for Gout

Home Remedy Ingredients

  • Apple Cider Vinegar - 1 Teaspoon
  • Filtered Water - Large Glass

Taking an apple cider vinegar (ACV) tonic 1-3 times daily can improve your overall nutrition and help dissolve the uric acid crystals. Mix a teaspoon of ACV in a large glass of water (honey optional) and drink with a meal. Increase the amount of ACV as high as 2 tablespoons per glass, as your body requires.

[YEA]  Lori from Maine: "My significant other has suffered with gout since 2003. His doctor prescribed the usual pills that didn't work. His pain & swelling got worse. I found info on the web about trying cherries. He ate loads of fresh cherries & it got better. I bought him bottles of organic cherry juice, he drank a quart one night and the next day it was almost gone. This year his blood sugar was high when he got an attack of gout. I read on this site about the apple cider vinegar. He agreed to try it, drank 2 tbsp mixed with a cup of water 3 times a day... got out of bed the next morning and it was almost gone! Amazing. Yesterday, a co-worker was limping. When asked what happened he said "GOUT!". I got him to try the apple cider vinegar and this morning he walked into work without a limp! He said it was 90% gone and the only thing that has ever worked! It's amazing."

06/18/2012: Lisa from Dallas, Tx replies: "There seems to be a lot of posts regarding ACV with Baking Soda. My concern is worth mentioning that too much of the BS mixture can tend to mess up your electrolyte balance, if not careful. That can be bad. I find that Tri-Salts is a much better, safer and healthier alternative to the baking soda. I've had great success using the Tri-Salts (No sodium - only Calcium carbonate/450mg, Magnesium carbonate/250mg, & Potassium bicarbonate/99 mg), and works EXTREMELY well before bedtime, especially if you suffer from acid reflux disease. I also use the unfiltered, organic ACV from the health food store. I order Tri-Salts online. My uric acid levels being "smack dab in the middle range" is actually high enough to always cause me grief. This method works well for me to get it back down. I prefer the protocol mentioned, as opposed to possibly overdoing the baking soda solution."
10/31/2012: Amazon13 from Fresno, Ca, Usa replies: "I have been using ACV for many, many years and the health benefits of it is endless. Lisa from Dallas, TX on 06/18/2012 reply was right on the money and to that I would like to warn people that too much baking soda can make your blood pressure rise if not careful. I too now have bouts with Gout and am starting a regimen for that with the ACV and Baking Soda, but my plans are to try the Tri-Salts because this is the first of my hearing about this product!

I will be researching this before actually buying it, I'm a firm believer in researching things before I try them but it sounds promising. I was diagnosed with NAFLD last year and my doctor tole me that there was no cure or treatment for it and that many people in the USA have this disease due to eating too much fatty foods. She left it at that and soon after I left her with that prognosis because I believe that natural treatments will prevail if one persist with the treatments and I was right. I have minimum trust in Western Medicines and the doctors who prescribe them.

I'm doing much better since I left that doctor and started my own regimen to treat and maybe even, who knows, cure my NAFLD. All I can say is I stated this the beginning of 2012 and now I'm no longer having the devastating pain that I was having, by the way I had gone to the emergency room of a near by hospital back in August of 2011 for this problem and that is when this condition was identified by the emergency room doctor whom instructed me to go to my primary doctor for followup, which I did.

To say the least she was lackadaisical about how to follow up with my diagnosis even though the emergency room doctor had suggested that my emergency room visit be followed up with a CAT Scan to see if there was more damage to my liver than they were able to see on the sonogram that night. My doctors indecisiveness about the CAT Scan because she felt it was too much radiation, I've never had one before in my life! She being a naturopathic doctor who was determined not to allow me to have the procedure although I specifically informed her that I wanted it, cancelled it without even notifying me of the cancellation!

There were all kinds of signs of my NAFLD on my body, yet after seeing her for more than three years she never spoted any of the signs, considering all of the bloodtest that I had within the three years, I was livid about this to say the least! Now I'm in the market for a primary doctor again but this time I'm going to have to feel the connection before I decide on a doctor because many of them no longer have the inner feeling of wanting to help and heal their patients."

[YEA]  12/22/2011: Patrick from Atlanta, Ga: "Thanks to all you folks for posting your feedback for the home cures for gout. I have have it for the last 3 years and have had several attacks both mild and severe. It really sucks is that after a spending good money to see the doctors and podiatry folks. I found the real cure was on this website. So during my last gout flare up (5 days before Christmas) I came across this site and was amazed as to success that everyone has had with ACV and baking soda. I said this is a freaking joke and it would never WORK! I have to say that I too hobbled down to pick this suff up and decided to try it. Well hell, it work like a miracle. I can walk normally with no limp, my swelling has disappeared and I'm not embarrassed to finish my Christmas shopping with my family. It has been an absolute blessing that I came across this site. I hope that if there is anyone else out there that is a skeptic, try for yourself because it works. Happy holidays!"

10/29/2011: Weaver from Dorset, U.k.: "Hi everyone. Like so many of you here, I was shocked last year when my Doc said I had a "touch of gout", when I thought I had broken my big toe! Well, fortunately the first attack last year was brief albeit extremely painful and I vowed to lose weight and try natural methods to prevent a recurrence.

I started taking ACV with the Mother in it which is non-pasteurised and unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar for those who didn't know. Basically, it should look cloudy with bits floating in it. Don't worry though! Those floating bits are the most helpful enzymes you will ever consume!!

What I do is pour about a cap full of ACV into a glass and dilute with water. I tend to fill the glass to the top. I like the taste which is like drinking a pint of cider before bedtime.

It works! The properties when ACV has the Mother in helps to eat the uric acid in your bloodstream in a natural way. It will also help to dissolve the uric acid crystals in your joints as well, but you must drink lots of water on a daily basis to keep flushing the body and disposing of the uric acid.

Now! Taking ACV with the Mother in is only half the job done because now you need to get your blood back from high acidity levels to a neutral alkaline state and thus avoid being prone to any future gout flare ups.

How do you do this?

1. Eat healthy. Avoid eating too many foods with high purine levels in. Most Gout help websites will give you a list of foods to avoid.

2. Keep hydrated. Drink plenty of water and aim to drink at least 1. 5-2 litres daily. This will help to keep flushing out your body of any nasties!

3. Baking soda solution. If you get a tingle (any who had suffered gout for a while knows what I mean) in your bones and especially your big toe, act fast and start taking baking soda solution on an empty stomach usually before bedtime and first thing in the morning before breakfast.

Add 1/4 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda into a glass and fill to brim. Stir up and drink down in one go.

The active properties in baking soda will start reducing the ph levels in your blood bringing it back into an alkaline state and hopefully avoid a painful flare up.

4. Test your ph levels. This may sound a little gross, but it's a cheap and effective way to periodically check the ph level of your body fluids. Instead of purchasing litmus paper or other ph testing equipment, pass a little urine into a glass or similar and sprinkle a pinch of baking soda into it.

If the baking soda drops straigh to the bottom of the glass then your are alkaline.

If the baking soda causes any bubbles, then there is likely to be too much acid in your blood and it's time to start taking the baking soda solution.

Good luck everyone!"

[YEA]  07/31/2011: Donna from Uc, Tx, Usa: "Wow... Thought I twisted my knee out in the yard. Actually was beginning of my first and hopefully last gout attack. Pain was getting unbearable in right knee to the point of hobbling around! I didnt know what was going on! Remembered my mom had gout long long time ago so I started looking online... Thank God I did. Started baking soda and water therapy yesterday at noon followed by ACV with orange juice... By last night the pain was dissipating and the heat on the joint was reduced. Was stiff this morning but still better and had another go-round of the cocktails! Am very happy to report that by this afternoon was up vacuuming the house... It is still a little tweaked but the speed of improvement was incredible. Spent couple hours on this site looking at the other posts as well. Will definately be back and will refer people as well. Many many thanks!"

07/24/2011: Nick C. from Toronto, Ontario, Canada: "Please note I have suffered from Gout attacks since 1987, I am a 65 years old retired bus driver and new here and this is my first time on this site and first time posting... So be patient if I screw it up ok?

I like to applaud all of you for posting and sharing so much great personal info... I must say, none of it is new to me since I am a veteran of finding what work and what not (at list I believe I am now haha J but is interesting how we will use similar products and receive different results.

I trust every one have been truthful here and so I like to share something about what have happen to me in the last 24 years... (yes, I am a slow learner, sorry!!! ) but again, it also could be that I had to pay so much karma and it was divided this long J hope the karma is all paid off and no more gout attacks for me or anyone anymore.

I like to thank you all who have contributed so much useful information for the rest of us. I received my first gout attack about 24 years ago as stated before. I thought I had torn ligaments in my left ankle since I was running in a park at that time and I thought my foot went on the ground the wrong way.

After a few days of really great pain, (you all know what I am talking about, yes???) I had to use crutches to get to a doctor so he could check out what was. He right away say it was gout not thorn ligaments... I was prescribed allopurinol and indocine and send home.

Since these medications worked... I did not think more of that and went on living as I used to and every time I would feel any gout attack coming, I would take allopurinol and it would be gone in a day...

Stupid me, keep on doing this for years... Till God bang on my head and say, you stupid man, why do not find out what these medications are doing to your body and figure out what you can do naturally heal and get better?

Making the story a little short... a lot of problems developed from taking medications and NOT taking care in a natural way and for not looking closely to what this Gout was all about.

Now fast forward today... I have been suffering and doing everything I know to alleviate this last attack that started July 12-2011... Yes, I say this last attack because I am determined to cure it once and for all... Thanks to all suggestions I found elsewhere and confirmed them here with real people who are concerned and helpful to every one... THANKS so much to all of you for all what you contributed so far and what will contribute in the future.

Since July 12, 2011 I have taken 3 days in a row, lost of vitamin C as it worked before... But did not work this time... So I went on line to search for other natural remedies... Found the ACV and honey formula... But I am 100% vegan (yes, even vegans have gout, if it was there before becoming vegan.. I presume that is the truth) so I do not use honey and used stevia instead... 3 days of that formula.. The swelling and pain was still there.. Then I mixed Vitamin C and the ACV with water and lemon and stevia... It seamed to work, but not as it was shown it worked with others... So I went back to read the formula and I was doing it wrong... I used too much ACV... Almost 4-5 times J Anyway... I changed a little as the formula say and went on for a few more days and since it was not working as fast as I imagined, two days a go went back to search again and found the baking soda formula... VOILA" I got relived from the pain almost instantly and I say THANK GOD finally found something that brings fast results and it looks like long lasting as well.

So I have been drinking 8 oz of water with ½ teaspoon of baking soda 3 times a day..

Yesterday was a triumph and this morning got up very happy because the swelling and the pain was very minimum... But now is after 9pm at night and I can see the swelling is gone up and there is a little pain... Nothing to worry and I also must say I can sleep fine with no pain keeping me awake, I ma certain tomorrow morning will be much, much better

Not sure why or how come the swelling come up in the evening... But it has done this a few other times before.. So I got used to.... But I must say I can feel this is it, this formulation works more then any other one that I used before and it is all natural.. wow!!!!! But I also must say that I am not 100% sure what really worked more then the other since I use everything else before..

The end of this post... I also changed to a 90% raw diet and stay away from all foods known to have high purine contents, like beans and lentils and so on, I will continue taking Baking Soda and water, together with one or two times a day the ACV formula and once the swelling and pain is all gone.. And my healthy foot and immune system is 100% healthy and great shape as it was many times before... I will continue taking some ACV with water from time to time and also baking soda with water for maintenance... I am certain gout will be a thing of the past from now onward

Hope what I wrote assist someone here as your post assisted me and more."

[YEA]  04/19/2011: Jodie from Leicester, England: "Hi fellow gout sufferers. I first experienced gout a few years ago and had medication to clear it up. I haven't had an attack for almost a year, but two days ago my bunion on my big toe started to ache. I didn't think about gout until later that night when there was some redness. Yesterday, the angry redness and swelling were growing. I didn't want medication so looked on Earth Remedies.

I tried just a very small amount of baking soda and apple cider vinegar twice. I also applied some ibuprofen pain relief gel twice. Because I suspect that carbohydrates cause the gout flame up in the first place, I cut my carbs. Today, the angry redness is very slight and the pain has subsided. This is miraculous as I have been almost crippled with the pain in the past, unable to sleep and unable to walk properly. The reason I think carbs bring on an attack is because I have been eating more of them every time I have had an attack. Thank you everyone for your advice. Jodie"

04/21/2012: Jade from Leicester, Uk replies: "Hi, I was interested to read that Jodie said her gout was made worse by eating carbohydrates. I too discovered this. I haven't had a gout attack for two years. However, yesterday, I could feel a twinge in my right big toe. Today, I can feel it again. After not eating many carbohydrates I tried once more to eat some. I am not talking about a large amount; just a couple of slices of bread or similar. I knew instantly that the extra carbs had caused my gout to rear its ugly head again. I am so pleased that Jodie has also confirmed this. I am off now to get some bicarbonate of soda to prevent the attack become full blown. An attack is usually so bad that I can hardly walk, but you fellow sufferers are aware of that. Thank you all."

[WORKED TEMPORARILY]  12/30/2009: Richard from Menlo, Iowa: "I've been suffering with Gout on and off for the last year. I've been to my Dr. 6 of 7 times. Well he gave me several differant meds. None that really worked for more than a couple of day and some were no help at all. Then he sent me to a specialist. Well he drained out some fluid from my ankel to see if there was any crystals in it. When he came back he said he didn't see any crystals. Then shot some Cordizone in it and told me to come back when it flared up again and he'd drain it again. That was on the 16th of Dec. He told me that it would get better over the next 48 hour and if it was not better by the 19th to call him back.Over the next 2 days it did get a little better. Then on the 3rd day it started all over again. By then I'd found this site. So i started on the Apple Cider Vinegar and baking soda. 2 teaspoons of ACV and 1/2 teaspoon B.S. 3times a day. In the A.M.I was on crutches but by that night I was walking without them. What a turn around. Well I've read that taking B.S.for to long isn't good for you but everytime I stop for more than a day the pain comes back. So I really don't know what to do. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks"

[YEA]  11/13/2008: JJ from Wichita, KS/USA: "ACV & baking soda: I woke up one morning with an ache in my thumb and by the next day I had my first attack of Gout. A friend, who is an MD gave me a script for colchozine and I got absolutely no relief from taking that, prednizone and large amounts of ibuprophen. It hurt so badly for four days, I was starting to freak out! I went to our local health food store and bought $100 worth of supplements and began taking things like cherry, celery seed, alfalfa and fatty acids. Then that night I found a web site that told me to take ACV & baking soda in 6 - 8 oz. of water. I did it that night and thought I felt some relief but didn't want to be too hopeful. In the night I woke up and took more water and baking soda only. (I understood the chemistry behind the soda offsetting the acid) I woke up disappointed that it was not better at all. I found this web site and I decided to try the ACV & Baking soda again and amazingly withing 20 minutes I began feeling a lot of relief. I kept up the same regiment of supplements but with the ACV & baking soda twice a day. After 4 days I'd say I'm 90% recovered. The pain was much reduced after 1 1/2 days. I still have a small knot and some tenderness in one spot! Thanks so much!!!"

[NAY]  09/14/2007: F from Denver, Colorado: "I have been suffering from gout pain for three weeks with no end in site. I have read through the postings and have tried the baking soda and ACV twice a day for six days now and have felt no relief. In fact, the pain has increased in intensity. My doctor has now placed me on medication to reduce the uric acid in my body for the next 15 days. I would really like to learn of a life long remedy and not be chained to another medication. I already am being medicayed for HBP and Cholesterol. Any ideas? I would be enternally grateful. Thanks"

If he catches it at the onset...just one litre seems to do for him"
08/04/2009: Rideronthestorm54 from Grand Junction, Co replies: "You MUST change your diet. Nuts, too much meat and especially alcohol. Stop drinking beer. Remove the foods that have high purines(protein) from your diet and it will get better."

Wish I could provide the name of the product and/or the company that makes it, but if you have a good health food store in your area, I'm sure they can find the product or something similar. Hope you're better by now (you posted a year ago) but if you don't need this info, maybe someone else does. I also had to cut back on my red wine consumption. Am also using ACV and BSM."

BETTER BUT NOT CURED

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  09/05/2011: Angelo Osorio from Spring Hill, Florida: "When I woke up Saturday morning I was in terrible pain it was on my toe. At first I thought it was a spider bite? I called my Dad and he told me that we have a history with this happening in our family from his Dad(Granpa) to my Dad. "GOUT" I really don't like hospitals so I went straight to the internet to research this Gout and to see how I can find an easier solution than a painful trip to the hospital an a expensive bill. Then I read that 1/2 tsp of baking soda in a 4oz glass of water without going over 7 in 1 day helps as well as, V8 juice with a 1/2tsp of celery seeds, and a Teaspoon of Apple cider vinegar in a 10oz glass of water. I did this the entire day along with some cherries and celery sticks and the occasional intake of Advil about 800mg. Today is Monday and I'm 90% better and on my way to the beach with my kids. I thank you for all your feedback and good advise."

QUESTION

[YEA]  03/21/2012: Ron1999 from Moore, Ok: "Anyone who has gout knows how extremely painful it can be.

I usually get a gout flare once every year or two. But, within the past 6 months or so, I've been getting them every week. And, it always alternates between my left foot and right foot. Luckily I haven't had a flare in both feet at the same time. Nothing in my diet, exercise levels, or any other factor has changed.

Due to the increase in the frequency of the flares I went to the doctor, during a bad gout flare, to see if something could be done. At the time I went to the doctor my knees were also hurting. The doctor took X-rays of my foot and my knees. He said the gout has caused irreversible damage to my toe joints, and I have developed arthritis in both knees.

Well, that's just dandy.

He told me of some medicine options that could help with the gout. But, the side effects were worse than the actual disease. I declined the medication and told him that I would stick with taking Alleve when the pain became too unbearable.

Well, this past Monday I had another gout flare. I was limping around like an old man using the wall for support. I took the Alleve and it helped a little with taking the sharp edge off the pain, but the gout flare was still going strong.

Yesterday I searched online for some home remedies for gout and found this website. I decided to try the apple cider vineger/black cherry concoction that has already been mentioned: 2 TBSP apple cider vinegar with "mother" ("mother" is the floating stuff you see in the ACV. It has to be the organic, and unprocessed, ACV that can be found in any healthfood store and some grocery stores), 2 TBSP of black cherry concentrate (also found in healthfood stores and some grocery stores), mixed with 8 ounces of water. You can even add some honey if you'd like for a better flavor. I like vinegar so I didn't find the taste objectionable.

I bought a 16 ounce bottle of ACV with "mother", and a 16 ounce bottle of black cherry concentrate for $10. I read that any kind of cherry juice will work, but it has to be straight cherry juice with nothing else added to it (preservatives, sugar, etc).

I took a "dose" as soon as I got home from work. Within a few hours the pain had decreased quite a bit. I took a second "dose" right at bedtime. I did not take any Alleve, or pain meds of any kind, so I could better judge if the concoction was actually doing anything.

I woke up this morning and I could walk normally about 90% pain free. I can still feel a twinge of stinging pain if I bend my toe too far back. But, other than that, I'm not limping.

I took a third "dose" just before I left for work.

My wife laughed at me when I told her about this home remedy. She thought I was nuts to be drinking something so "nasty". But, she can't argue with the results.

There is something about the ACV, and the black cherry juice, that neutralizes the uric acid in the body and prevents those needle sharp crystals from forming in the joints.

I can't guarantee that it will work for everybody. But, for a $10 spot what do you have to lose? Personally, I like the idea of not having to take a pain pill and drinking something completely natural instead.

I plan on drinking the concoction three times a day for about a week then go to twice a day (morning and night). I have no idea if doing so will be a long term solution to keep the uric acid levels at bay. But, I'm certainly going to give it my best shot."

[YEA]  01/24/2011: Tom from Chicago, Il: "after 25 days of swelling /pain /crutches-would try anything- Apple Cider Vinegar and cherrys worked in 1 1/2 days -crazy - back in gym- but still tender in big toe thanks everyone"

[QUESTION]  08/03/2010: Alan from San Antonio, Texas: "I have had Gout about once a year for many years. Until now I used Ibuprofen and in 2-3 days it was gone. The last time was 2 1/2 years ago. This time gout attacked my big toe joint and has lasted 30 days. It is 80% cured but keeps hanging on. I have been taking allopurinol for most of the 30 days and my UA is down to 3.8. Previous tests in the past have been 7 or higher. I found your website about a week ago and started immediately on ACV with Mother and Black Cherry Concentrate capsules and fresh cherries. I started with 4 tbsp ACV/day and cut back to 3. My mouth became raw and sensitive so I skipped two days and started back with 2 tsp per day. I am puzzled by the long term of the gout compared to previous episodes. I retired at age 71 about 18 months ago. Could my age be a factor?"

Replies
08/06/2010: Alain from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada replies: "Answer to Alan from San Antonio about gout. Gout is caused because of accumulated uric acid crystals. A big portion of uric acid is eliminated by the kidneys. However, uric acid will be eliminated mostly if the urine is near pH 7 (neutral). You can verify this fact by yourself by measuring the urine pH with pH paper designed for this purpose. Look for EC alkalizing formulas, or some of my posts for some suggestions. Changes in diet will also help. Eat the least processed food as possible. Recent research have also shown that fructose will cause uric acid. Check those process food with high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). This stuff is almost in every processed food. Good luck, Alain"
