[YEA] 04/24/2006: Joe from Dublin, OH writes: "I had gout for many years with attacks starting once per year and increase in about 10 years to 4-5 times per year. Dr. prescribed the std. Colchicine and Alpurinol but but the end this was no longer curing the pain or swelling but I did get the "fun" side effects of diarrhea from the cholchicine. I read some articles about Cherries and wanted to find a good source since they are not always in season and the extract is horrendous. In a vitamin store I have found Black Cherry Pills. I take 2 per day. If I start getting the early signs, I increase the does to 4-6 per day. This has made me gout free for about 3 years, Until this weekend when I had my first attack in a long time (week in Hilton head with alot of drinking and grilling out so it is my own fault). I actually found some 5 year old Cholchicine and took that (no help), started taking 10 per day of the Black Cherry pills per day and it is getting better but not out of the woods yet. The Black Cherry Pills definitely helped me."

CHERRIES, APPLE CIDER VINEGAR, BAKING SODA
[YEA] 06/12/2009: Tim from Gladewater, Texas writes: "I am 30yrs old and have had gout in my left foot/toe for a few years now. My flare ups usualy last a few weeks to months, so last week when I started feeling the twinge in my ankle I new it was gonna be long summer.
As of last nite it was in my knee (a new thing) and I was imobilized (also a new thing) by the pain in my foot.
So like a good little invalid I was sitting on the couch foot elevated scouting the web for a remedy on my iPhone when I came across this site. I read all the posts for gout and was inspired by all the stories of people actualy finding relief from such excruciating pain as gout can cause from somthing as simple as apple cider vinager. As anyone reading this post probly knows I was eager to give anything a try. Last nite I ate a half a bag of (at least 50) plum cherries as well as mixed 1.5 tbl spoon ACV (5% acidity #1 national brand sounds like Heins with a Z) with a half cup of water and tossed it back followed directly by 1/2 tbl spoon baking soda mixed in a 1/2 cup water. Within a few hours the pain in my foot had deminished noticeably. This morning the pain was back but not as severe as yesterday morning. I followed up again with ACV/BS water treatment and cherries for breakfast. It's 2:00 pm now I just finished my second dose of the day and am standing here writing this post on my iPhone almost pain free (yes standing here). It seems to good to be true but it worked for me."

[YEA] 04/11/2007: Eric from Brooklyn, NY writes: "coconut milk helped with me with gout and any other in the joints with in a week than any other thing i have tried.
COCONUT MILK - HOW TO MAKE IT (Recipe Courtesy of http://www.all-organic-food.com/index.htm )
Coconut milk is not the liquid inside a coconut, although this liquid does make a satisfying drink. Rather, coconut milk is made by squeezing the grated flesh of a coconut with some hot water resulting in a rich white liquid that looks very much like cow's milk.
Coconut milk should be distinguished from coconut cream. Fresh coconut milk, when refrigerated, and canned coconut milk, if not shaken, separates into two layers, with the thick (upper) layer being the coconut cream and the thinner (bottom) layer constituting the milk. The top layer can be skimmed off with a spoon and used for recipes requiring coconut cream (usually desserts) with the bottom layer being reserved for recipes specifying coconut milk.
Canned, frozen and powdered coconut milk are widely available, convenient to use and generally of acceptable quality. However, they do not generally achieve quite the quality of coconut milk prepared at home from fresh or desiccated coconut.
For those who might want to try preparing coconut milk at home, the following provides instructions for doing so.
A: Preparing Coconut Milk from Fresh Coconuts
Pierce the eyes of a fresh coconut, drain the liquid inside and place the coconut on a rack and bake in a 325F pre-heated oven for about 30 minutes. Remove the coconut from the oven, let it cool a bit and crack it with a hammer so that the shell breaks into several pieces. Remove all the coconut meat from the shell, peel off the brown skin and cut the meat into very small cubes. Place the meat in a blender, add hot water to just cover all of the meat and blend until finely grated. Place a sieve covered with cheese cloth over a bowl and pour the coconut meat and water into the sieve squeezing handfuls of the coconut meat to extract as much liquid as possible into the bowl. Discard the squeezed coconut meat and refrigerate the coconut milk that has been extracted into the bowl. Refrigerate the milk and use within 1 or 2 days. B: Preparing Coconut Milk from Desiccated coconut.
Empty an 8 oz package of unsweetened desiccated coconut into a blender and add 1 cup boiling water. Blend for about 30 seconds and allow the mixture to cool a bit. Place a sieve over a bowl lined with cheese cloth. Ladle the mixture into the cheese cloth, fold the edges over the coconut meat and twist the ends to extract as much milk as you can into the bowl. Discard the squeezed coconut meat and refrigerate the coconut milk that has been extracted into the bowl. Refrigerate the milk and use within 1 or 2 days."

[YEA] 02/21/2009: Lisa from San Francisco, CA/US writes: "Arthritis/gout: I've had my first gout attack and was in excruciating pain for 4 weeks. I tried pretty much everything: ACV, turmeric, ginger, prescribed pain killers, acupuncture, cherry juice and the pain subsided but not much...
I lost faith in my doctors who prescribed me a bunch of pills that did not go well with my body not to mention long term liver damage. So finally I read posts from people who gave coconut oil to their pets. So I tried 2 tbsp of coconut and within 1 day felt better. Now I was still taking 2 tbsp of ACV along with the coconut so if the combination work better or not but I did feel 95% better. I am now taking less ACV and more coconut oil.
Folks, when you are desperate, you'll try anything to get healthy but keep in mind, you want to take unrefined, raw virgin coconut oil. I do not understand why most of our food has to be refined and over-processed? I hope the food industry will improve our food quality in a very near future. I even started researching on raw milk (which unfortunately is hard to find and gets quite expensive) where in some culture take it to cure their arthritis problems. Good thing is virgin coconut oil is pretty cheap and widely available online. I even use coconut oil on my face and hair, works great on my hair."

[YEA] 03/03/2009: Adam from North Myrtle Beach, SC writes: "I accidently gave myself gout after self medicating with extreme amounts of B vitamins. My family has a history of gout so it was bound to happen to me sooner or later. I have had excruciating attacks in my toe, ankle, and various places on top and bottom of my feet. I have found some very good treatments over the last year or two for gout. The first one I found was a far-infrared sauna which will work wonders but is very expensive ($2000+) but will treat multiple conditions. The second one i found was the ionic foot bath. My grandpa and I have had amazing results with it. After one treatment I could eat or drink anything I wanted with no side effects for about a month but then I would need another treatment. Each treatment usually costs around $30-35 or you can buy one for about $300. The third one and by far the most economical fresh cod liver oil taken everyday about $50 or less to cover you for a month or more. I would recommend 1-2 tablespoons of fresh cod liver oil a day and one ionic foot bath treatment a month to never worrie about gout again. You might be able to find a alternitive health clinic near you that will give you a free first ionic treatment. Try these out and let us know if they help you."

[YEA] 12/18/2008: Don from Southwest , Michigan USA writes: "For several years I suffered from gout and lymes. I haven't had a bout of gout in a long time since I lost weight and improved my diet. A few days ago I messed up and ate like a teenager and got a whopping case of gout in my left big toe. It then moved through my chest and into my right foot. I spent a terrible night. Both feet were swollen and painful. The next morning I used what I had learned in the past and put together this therapy mixture.
I started at 8am and by 3pm all the pain was gone and the swelling had decreased by at least half.
Everyone asks for specifics in measurements so here is what I did.
Let me emphasize that what worked for me may not work as well for you, but I hope it does.
IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU START THIS THERAPY IN THE MORNING ON AN EMPTY STOMACH!
1. One 64oz. bottle of Cranberry Juice 100% Juice (Ocean Spray/Old Orchard). It will probably have some other juices like apple or grape but that's a good thing. (DO NOT USE JUICE BLENDED WITH HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP AND NO SUGAR ADDED) READ THE LABEL!
2. One 14.5oz can of NATURAL RED TART CHERRIES PITTED.
3. About 4oz of Natural ACV with the Mother. (Mrs. Braggs etc)
4. About 8oz. Natural Grapefruit Juice 100% Juice (NOT A BLEND NO SUGAR)
5. Two 200mg tablets of IBUPROFEN (Advil, Motrin etc)
In a small blender blend the cherries till smooth and pour equally into two 1qt. jars. (Use one large container/pitcher if you prefer)
Add the ACV and Grapefruit Juice equally to the jars.
Use the Cranberry Juice to fill the jars.
Drink as much as you can at the first drinking.
Then take the two Ibuprofen tablets with bottled water.
For the rest of the day drink the remainder of the mixture as you feel like it.
As you finish the first jar and part of the second rinse the first jar with the remainder of the Cranberry Juice and pour into the second jar. When the Cherry mix is completed continue to drink the Cranberry juice until gone.
DO NOT DRINK WELL WATER OR MUNICIPLE WATER THIS DAY.
DO NOT EAT ANYTHING UNTIL THE MIXTURE IS FINISHED.
If you start this at about 8am you should be finished by 2-3pm in the afternoon.
Then eat sparingly as required (hot vegetable soup) but NO BREADS OR MEAT!
Stay off your feet thru the day and keep your feet elevated.

ELIMINATE HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP
[YEA] 11/16/2007: SG from Bakersfield, CA writes: "HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP OVERDOSE. I have a friend that used to have gout. When I met him, he walked like an old man and leaned on shopping carts in the grocery store. Well, after some Internet research, I found that high fructose corn syrup overdose can cause symptoms identical to gout! Keep in mind that high fructose corn syrup is everywhere... not just sodas, I found, but in things like canned string beans! It is very easy to overdose. So, for the next 3 months, he removed high fructose corn syrup, "natural flavoring", and all cooked food with no labels from his diet. Doctors always say to avoid red meats, but to test my pet theory that it was the chemicals the meat is cured in, instead of the meat itself, we ate either pork or beef (bought raw and seasoned at home) almost every day. After three months, it was gone! And he went back to eating high fructose corn syrup, and it is still gone. Amazing!"

LEMONS, CHERRIES, DIET AND EXERCISE
[YEA] 03/29/2009: Stephen Norman from Jersey, United Kingdom writes: "Gout cure
1. Lemon Juice
Gout is a build up of too much acid in the body. Therefore the body's pH level must be neutralized by adding alkaline to the body. This is best achieved by drinking the juice of a fresh lemon. Lemons are 20% acid, 80% alkaline. I just take the juice of a whole lemon, mix it with warm water in a tumbler and down it through a straw. Doing this first thing in the morning on a empty stomach also helps cleanse the kidneys which is linked to other gout related problems.
2. Cherries
Prior to taking lemon juice every day, if I felt a gout attack coming on, I would go and buy a kilo of cherries and gradually munch on them for a few hours. Cherries are a natural anti-inflammatory.
3. Diet and Exercise
While the first two points are excellent treatments, a healthy balanced diet and exercising 3 times a week for 45 minutes is core to preventing gout from occurring in the first place.
Fad diets are rubbish. Dieting is pretty simple. It's pretty obvious what's healthy and not:
Things that grow out the ground and that are natural = good. Things in colourful packets with loads of e-numbers and weird looking animations promoting them = bad.
Moderation is the key."

[YEA] 04/02/2008: Lorenzo from Portland, Oregon writes: "Lithium and Vitamin C eliminates painful gout flare-ups.
I have had gout since my early 20's. I am part Islander, and it tends to run in our genes. I was not diagnosed until I turned 29. Most doctors thought I had other problems, but finally a podiatrist clued me in. Since then, I have tried a number of different medications and home treatments. Sure, Allopurinol is great, Promethecin is good, but these drugs can cause liver problems in the long term, esp. if you don't drink enough water. My doctor (an Osteopath), finally found an experimental treatment that seems to work nicely for me. More importantly, it's natural and I can get off allopurinol and promethecin, at least for a while, and give my liver a break. 10-15 milligrams of Lithium taken twice per day, plus about 1000 - 2000 milligrams of vitamin C. This magic combination has made my gout pain disappear. I still eat meat, but avoid my trigger foods (mushrooms, mussels, beer, any kind of stewed meat). This has not only eliminated my flare-ups, but my knees feel better than they have in a decade. I strongly recommend you switch to this med. as soon as possible. Lithium is a natural mineral with a long history of people taking it in large quantities for other problems (like depression and bipolar disorder). 20-30 milligrams a day is nothing compared to the 200 that is prescribed to most people suffering mental issues. You may need to buy the lithium off the internet, as nobody sells it in health stores. You can buy lithium in 120 milligram tablets. Just break them into 4ths and take one each day = 25-35 milligrams. The Vitamin C can cause bright yellow diarhea, so adjust your Vitamin C intake down if you start having problems. I now take 500 - 1000 milligrams a day and my digestive system is fine. Finally, a simple maintenance cure."

1 WARNING!
[YEA] 07/25/2008: Joyce from Joelton, Tn writes: "Response to Sandra
"To Joyce from Joelton,Tn. Gout: What is the method used with Pokeweed for Gout? Do you make a paste and wrap the foot, or do you ingest them? Please advise? What are the exact measurements for this herb?"
I started doing this by putting berries in l gallon jug and using enough Vodka to just cover the berries. Put tight lid on and let set a week or two, moving jug around a little every two to three days. After that, just strain off the liquid and store in brown or green bottles. Beer bottles work fine for storage. (You can also use your potato masher (or whatever you have) to kind of sqush those pokeberries before straining the liquid off.
For those of you who are interested in doing your own herbs, when using fresh herbs your ratio is l:l. If using dehydrated herbs the ratio is l part herb to 2 parts diluent.
I can't remember where I read it, but I do recall reading that you shouldn't treat children under l2 with poke, because it hastened the setting of the long bones (arms & legs). There might be something to this because my family ate a lot of poke sallet and many of us have normal size bodies but short arms and legs. I might also add that most references recommend parboiling through 3 waters before ingesting, but my family (and others that I know who ate their share of it) only parboiled through one water (water discarded) before proceeding to finish cooking it and eating it."
[WARNING!] 10/01/2008: Denise replies: "Please reconsider keeping this posting on your site. Pokeweed is known to be toxic- all parts of the plant. The toxins can cause a myriad of health problems, including paralysis and death. It is believed that no amount of boiling and discarding the water will remove all its toxins. There are too many safe alternatives, to even suggest this to anyone!
Thank you for your consideration,
Denise"
10/02/2008: Joyce from Joelton, Tn replies: "I have been eating poke sallet as far back as I can remember with the only adverse effect being diarrhea for a couple of trips to the bathroom if you ate a large amount of it and that was only parboiling it x 1. I have never had any adverse effects from taking the poke berries nor has any of the other people that are taking them and we all had good results with improvement with the joint pain.
If you researched pokeweed you would learn that Vanderbilt and many other hospitals have done a lot of research on them. As I may have mentioned before, while working on my Nurse Practitioner MS degree at Vandy (1978), our physiology instructor shared a little pearl of wisdom with us which was: "We don't know why but from a little research project we have going on here now, pokeberries throws the body into gear to fight". From her little pearl of wisdom, I assume they were ingesting the pokeberries in the study.
If you looked the plant up, one thing she would learn is that poke berries are very rich in Vitamin C, along with a bunch of other chemicals with different reactions. I think that several of us have been taking them for 40+ years and are still living are proof that they aren't all that poisonous. On the other hand, I suspect that Vioxx evolved from some of those research studies on pokeweed, and we all know what happens when you isolate one property of the plant, and make a synthetic version so it can be patented. When the fail-safes included in the plant are removed, so is the safety. I think most people know what happened to the ones taking Vioxx. I am still in much better health at age 75 after 40 + years of taking pokeberries than most of those poor souls who only took Vioxx for a few years. I believe I have a little more experience with this plant than most and I know several friends and family members who have been taking them almost as long as I have.P.S. There are some things that I won't recommend such as Jimson Weed (also known as deadly nightshade) because they are poison. I remember reading in the paper 10+ years ago about some farmer getting the bright idea of grafting his tomatoes onto jimson weeds *same family) to increase their resistance to pests, etc. & increase yield. Three or 4 of the family died after eating the tomatoes and several others came close to it. I know that one is dangerous, because it is where atropine came from initially.
I recently had someone tell me that johnson grass was poisonous. I told him that I had never heard that before but I was sure it wasn't because I had chewed on one of its roots (actually tasted sweet) just to see what it tastes like. I have also read that it is edible (if we ever get that hungry)."
10/06/2008: Denise from Sparks, NV replies: "re: Joyce's response about Pokeweed
Thanks for your informative reply. I'd always heard the pokeweed was poisonous and that was the only information I ever came across in researching it.
As luck would have it, I had to go out and get something for my husband's sore throat this weekend. I came across Boiron's homeopathic remedies; in looking through them, I located the 'sore throat radiating to the ears' remedy. It's main ingredient: Phytolacca decandra, commonly known as POKEWEED!!
Needless to say, I was amazed!
So I did research more, and while Iowa State U's recommendation is to eradicate it everywhere it comes up, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the American Cancer Society actually acknowledges that while it can be toxic, pokeweed when used properly, has incredible healing powers for a wide array of ailments.
Live and learn."

When I used to play rugby, after every game, both of my big toes felt like they were on fire. As you all have, I tried every remedy I could, trying to stay away from Allopurinol as much as possible. Finally, I came across a magic bullet - potassium supplements. I tend to be a bit of a carnivore so my diet lacks the proper levels of potassium. I was reading an article about arthritis (another legacy of 30 years of rugby) and they mentioned that low potassium levels contributed to the problem and in passing mentioned that potassium also appeared to dissolve Uric crystals. The next time I had an attack, I started taking potassium supplements and IT WORKED. Within a day, the pain was reduced to a dull roar and within 2 it was gone completely. What a relief! I can't recommend this approach enough. Good Luck."
