Apple Cider Vinegar Cure for Gout
Home Remedy Ingredients
- Apple Cider Vinegar - 1 Teaspoon
- Filtered Water - Large Glass
Taking an apple cider vinegar (ACV) tonic 1-3 times daily can improve your overall nutrition and help dissolve the uric acid crystals. Mix a teaspoon of ACV in a large glass of water (honey optional) and drink with a meal. Increase the amount of ACV as high as 2 tablespoons per glass, as your body requires.

In the cold damp weather, these areas ached terribly. Taking 1 tspn Apple Cider Vinegar with 1 tspn honey in hot water at night then again next morning balanced the PH except for the big toe which was inflamed. Increased my water intake by 100% and took half a tspn bi-carb soda in half small glass warm water. 50% improvement within 24 hours then second dose bi-carb, problem solved!Maria from Canberra"

[YEA] 01/25/2011: John from Greve, Denmark: "I have had gout for the last 8 years. First half of 2010 the attacks grew more intense with several attacks pr months. The pain circled position toe-leg-hand-left and right side. After reading these reports I started to take ACV daily from mid June 2010. The pain slowly ceased and after three weeks it totally stopped.
Now 7 months after I have experienced no attack at all. THIS IS FANTASTIC. Every day two times I take two spoonful of ACV dissolved in a glass of water. I feel it important to take the right type of ACV, I take the organic type. As outlined, it works perfect with me, and I recommend strongly the treatment. I will continue to take the "medicine" the rest of my life."
Replies[BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS] 02/22/2011: James from Pittsburgh, Pa replies: "I had a flare up with really bad swelling, after taking a couple tbs fulls of ACV I could feel the pressure of the swelling subsiding. It gave me an upset stomach though even after diluting it with lots of water. So far so good, we will see what tomorrow brings."
05/21/2012: Ronnie from Decatur, Tn replies: "Ok I have had a Gout attack 6 mo 7 times per year for the past 9 or ten years now. Everyone knows that uric acid causes gout but what causes uric acid? Food with high purines- so how do we get rid of the high purine food? We dont. We eat foods that ride them for us like sourkraut and yogurt. I have been eating activa yogurt for 2 years now a 4 pack per week and no gout so far and I love sourkraut too, so you decide- liver damage or the natural way. The doctors wont tell you about yogurt or sourkraut because they havent been taught that it works. Try and let me know if it works for you tic410(at)Gmail.com I just got to know if its just me or if someone else found that this works."
[YEA] 01/24/2011: William from Orderville, Utah: "Finally a Magic Budget.Thank You Apple Cider Vinegar I have been dealing with gout for around 5 years now. I have had small episodes, along with some massive ones. 10 days ago I started feeling a gout attack in my right foot. I ignored the small pains until they were no longer small. I had a full blown attack. My right foot swelled up like a football and was red with fever. The allpurinall is so hard on my stomach that I usually try to wait out an attack, rather than try to fix it with man-made drugs. This attack seemed to be the Gout from Hell. I was miserable, my wife was ready to ship me off to some foreign country (just to have me out of the house).
To make a long story short, I started googleing gout and found this forum. What a blessing I started reading all the testimonials about ACV and hobbled right down to the supermarket and bought me a bottle of ACV with mother. I tried the ACV with honey, I tried it straight, I even mixed it with orange juice. I just wanted to get as much of it into my system as quick as possible. The results were amazing. I didn't see anything the first evening (I started taking ACV at 7:00 pm) however when I woke up the next morning the swelling had gone down at least 50% along with the redness. 24 hours later I put the crutches away (O' yeah I was on crutches for 4 days) and each day after the swelling and redness subsided. I have now been taking ACV for 5 days. I am a believer and will continue to take my 3-4 tbs of ACV every morning in my Orange juice. Thanks again for the helpful information. And good luck to all you fellow Gouters."

06/11/2011: Sabbyhubby Gout from Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam replies: "Could you please explain or be more specific on "Mother". I am lost and I have no clue what it is.ACV is apple cider vinegar and that is very clear. Please help. Thanks"
06/17/2011: Gracie from Victoria, Bc Canada replies: "The mother is in ACV that is unpasturized. It is basically just the chunky bits that float around and settle on the bottom. Its what turns the apple juice into cider vinegar. Most of the organic ACV will say it has the mother on the bottle and that it is unpasturized. Thats the kind that you want, not the chemically produced commercial variety."
[NAY] 01/08/2011: Healthy248 from Digby, Nova Scotia, Canada: "Can gout flareups be caused by an over abundance of iron in your blood, and then if you compound that iron with something with more iron in it like Molasses Honey, or maybe ACV, could that trigger an attack. Or is it strictly a uric acid buildup. I have had gout for number of years but not as severe as now, it always seemed to go away by itself. Recently I tried an old remedy of blackstrap molasses and warm water, but the gout got worse after the second day, then I happened upon the ACV, Honey and water regimen tried it for 2 days now; but gout is still here and getting worse, is there an issue with iron and this remedy as well, In defense of both cures I inadvertently have had more purine rich veggie foods and even haddock lately, mybad I just wasn't paying attention I guess, I'm just asking to see if anyone else experienced any thing like this. If iron is the culprit does anyone know how to diminish iron overload in the body. Thanks to all for any advise"
Replies04/23/2011: Bill from Brighton, Mi replies: "If your issue is too much iron, you can increase your intake of tea, tea chelates iron out of the body. I know this because I deal with iron-deficiency anemia. I am on this site researching high blood pressure and mild gout....."
05/17/2011: Dalimama from Philadelphia, Pa replies: "And, what do you do for your iron deficient anemia? I have that, too, although I found this site searching for natural remedies for gout for my hubby."
05/17/2011: Mmsg from Somewhere, Europe replies: "blackstrap molasses helped me. iron pills didn't get absorbed but molasses - the real black stuff here in europe, not the brown one, helped me."
05/18/2011: Lily from Brisbane, Queensland, Australia replies: "Yes Molasses really works for iron deficiency. I was taking it for the potassium and had my blood checked and my iron was through the roof. Twice the amount that it should have been. Now I have to stop taking it and rely on tomato juice instead. (not pleasant really). Lily."
07/26/2011: Patty from San Jose, California, Usa replies: "To Nova Scotia, if you have high iron levels, you may have Hemochromitosis. This is a genetic disorder that causes your body to obsorb all the iron in the food you eat. The genetic disorder can damage your joints, cause Cancer, Diabetes, Scirrosis, and more. Yet is as treatable as giving blood weekly to reduce the iron stores in your body and then give blood on a regular basis to keep the iron levels in control. Before you eat any more iron rich foods, such as molasses, you should have a genetic test or at least have your "Ferritin" levels checked. Too much iron can damage your joints and you may have seudo-gout as I do. Instead of Uric Acid crystals, seudo-gout forms Calcium crystals in the joint and acts just like gout. It is also treated with the same medication as gout. Hemochromitosis is one of the most undiagnosed disorders. Often the syptoms can mimic iron dificiancy anemia."
04/08/2012: Gayle from Ashland, New Brunswick Canada replies: "HEMOCHROMATOSIS -Too high iron levels in your blood... 01/08/2011: "Has anyone tried this soak for Gout? Please advise as soon as possible, my gout is killing me, does anyone have a remedy that could draw out the gout crystals?
Boil 3 cups of water and pour it into the container. Let the water cool just enough so that you can safely touch it with your foot. Pour 1 cup of apple cider vinegar into the hot water and stir to combine thoroughly. Lower your foot into the bath and let it soak for as long as you want. You can add more water and vinegar in the same proportions of three parts water to one part vinegar."

01/10/2011: Debra from Harrisburg, Pa replies: "I use Sour Cherry Juice (organic) and it helps with artheritis/sore joints/carpal tunnel. It is also very helpful for gout."
01/24/2011: Greg from Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin replies: "I have been suffering from gout attacks for over 15 yrs (elbow, knee, ankle, toes). I am 39 now. I started taking Aloe about 8 yrs ago and it has done well for me. I really don't like the idea of a "pill" for the rest of my life, but what else can I do? I have had few attacks with the Aloe but have been Dieting for a month and have lost about 25lbs. My problem is that I know I have gout in my left big toe, knee, and elbow. What can I do? I would love to get off Aloe."
01/24/2011: William from Orderville, Utah replies: "Apple cider vinegar, my friend. I am a firm believer in the stuff. I have been suffering from gout for 5 years. The ACV (with Mother)will help reduce the Uric acid in your blood. Everyone suggests to take 3-4 table spoons with honey, with 6 oz of water. I like to mix 4 table spoons of ACV with 6 oz. of orange juice. I think it is all the same, you just need to get it into your system. It has worked miracles with my Gout, I wish you the same success."
01/25/2011: Alain from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada replies: "Answer to Greg from Prairie Du Chien, about gout
The best thing I found for my gout was when I learned about pH balance. Gout is caused by accumulated uric acid crystals. A big portion of uric acid is eliminated by the kidneys. However, uric acid will be eliminated mostly if the urine is near pH 7 (neutral). You can verify this fact by yourself by measuring the urine pH with pH paper designed for this purpose. Look for EC alkalizing formulas, or some of my posts for some suggestions. Changes in diet will also help. Eat the least processed food as possible. Recent research have also shown that fructose will cause uric acid. Check those process food with high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). This stuff is almost in every processed food. A quick test to increase the pH (less acidic) of the urine is to take ACV with baking soda (sodium bicarbonate). If you have water retention, half of the baking soda should be replaced with potassium bicarbonate or potassium citrate.See: www.earthclinic.com/Remedies/alkalizing_formulas.html where you will find these 2 formulas.
Apple Cider Vinegar and Baking Soda Formula
1-Two tablespoon of ACV plus 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda. Take this two to three times a day on an empty stomach. It is supposed to give you more energy. The pH of this formula is about 7. 2-For People with Sodium Issues and Want to Alkalize
1/8 teaspoon of baking soda 1/16 teaspoon of potassium bicarbonate 1/4 teaspoon of citric acid. Add water to 1/2 glass of water. Take this twice a day once in the morning and once in the evening on an empty stomach. This is done to avoid diarrhea problems, if taken along with food. You may also consider adding a pinch of EPSOM salt to you drinking water, meals or the formulas above as magnesium will also help to alkalize see this post "

02/24/2011: Guy from Montreal, Canada replies: "I have a simple question.. Gout is created by excess uric acid , so how come that drinking ACV which is acetic, can cure it??"
02/25/2011: Bill from San Fernando, Luzon, Philippines replies: "Hi Guy... In order to understand how ACV is handled in the body requires that you understand a little about human digestion. Digestion begins in the mouth where the saliva juices and enzymes (alkaline) begin to digest only carbohydrates. The food then reaches the stomach which is an acid environment and then moves into the small intestines or duodenum where bicarbonates are secreted from the liver as bile and from the pancreas as enzymes in bicarbonates to neutralize the acid chyme. The digestion environment in the duodenum must be alkaline to neutral otherwise the digest the food and enzymes cannot do there job. Also, the necessity to neutralize the ACV wastes body bicarbonates which are critical for both proper body/blood alkalization a well as for respiration and human energy itself.
So if you ingest ACV as the acid form -- it will pass into the duodenum and must first be alkalized to citrate and malate salts(more alkaline) which is how it is best absorbed into the body. This neutralization process wastes your alkalizing body bicarbnates unnecessarily.
This is why Ted always insists that you should always neutraize the ascetic and malic acids with Sodium Bicarbonate(Baking Soda) from ACV FIRST, before you ingest them -- in this way you will not waste your essential alkalizing body bicarbonates on just neutralizing these acids."
02/25/2011: Bill from San Fernando, Luzon, Philippines replies: "Hi Guy... I forgot to add that when the ACV's malic and ascetic acids are converted to their citrate and malate salts and are absorbed into the blood -- these salts are somewhat alkalizing which again helps to dissolve out the excess uric acid crystals causing the gout
Since gout is all about blood acidity, an equally useful remedy for gout is simply to take 1/2 tspn of Baking Soda(sodium bicarbonate) in a 1/2 glass of water 2 or 3 times a day. This remedy directly alkalizes the blood, which will help to easily dissolve out the uric acid crystals causing the problem.
Yet another remedy for gout which I have used very successfully is to take about 1000 mgs Chanca piedra(capsules) twice a day at mealtimes. Chanca piedra is alkalizing and is also a diuretic which acts as a wonderful liver and kidney protective and balancer."
11/27/2011: Butterkup37 from Archdale, Nc, Usa replies: "Thanks for educating me on the digestion system, Bill. I was just doing the ACV because I heard so many bad things about baking soda. Just doing ACV my pH went from 6.5 to 6.2. That really confused me. Is it because I only consumed the ACV?I also ordered the Chanca Piedra. If I take 1000mg a day of this, will I still have to consume the ACV and baking soda? It really upsets my stomach, I find it more and more difficult to consume."
11/27/2011: Millie from Moorpark, California replies: "Our body needs to be at a 7.0 ph level to be healthy Your ph shows that your body is acidic and you need to raise your ph."
11/29/2011: Bill from San Fernando, Philippines replies: "High Buttercup37... Over 80% of your main blood serum macro-electrolytes (Sodium, Calcium, Magnesium and Potassium) is Sodium. Your body needs sodium to balance the serum electrolytes. That's why sodium bicarbonate will not hurt you. It is usually refined salt that is the problem -- and its not the sodium but the chloride part of salt that causes all problems which nobody ever mentions. That's why it's better to first neutralize the ACV with a 1/4-1/2 tspn of Baking Soda as Ted recommends. It also tastes much nicer and isn't acid.
When raw ACV is ingested and gets to the duodenum -- it uses the bicarbonates from the pancreas anyway to neutralize the acids in ACV before it is absorbed into the body. So why not neutralize the ACV before you ingest it. All you're doing here is just creating the post-digested form of ACV, so what's the difference ?
I'm also not sure why you are using ACV. ACV can be used in its raw form to help GERD problems where stomach acid is lacking -- because this increases stomach acidity. But if you are using ACV to alkalize and you are having problems with taking it -- then you should really be using the ACV and Baking Soda with half a glass of water as Ted recommends."
[YEA] 08/14/2010: Ricohoc from Udon Thani, Issan, Thailand: "First I want to thank all of those who have contributed such useful information for all of the rest of us. Reading it all and using it have been very valuable. I received my first gout attack about 16 years ago. I thought I had torn ligaments in my left ankle, but had no idea how. I was prescribed the usual allopurinol and indocine. After about 3 or 4 months, I quit the "allo" and just used the indocine for pain if I felt an attack coming on. It worked for years. Over the course of the past 16 years, I have only had 2 or 3 attacks that I would consider to be "not caught in time", and none of them prevented me from going to work. I have been fortunate. All of the attacks were either in my left big toe or left ankle. Then, two weeks ago, I woke from a great night's sleep to find my left arm swollen from the elbow to the middle of the forearm. I thought that I had contracted some kind of infection or had been bitten or stung during the night by some insect. It was neither. By Day 2, I had been online and realized that it was gout. I never knew it could/would attack the elbow. Again, this wasn't a severe attack. It did not keep me from doing what I had to do that day, but my left arm looked like Popeye's left arm. It was uncomfortable and so hot I could have fried an egg on it. Not pretty. I'm not inclined to return to the "allo", so I started looking online and found this site. I started the ACV quickly. Once in the morning and once in the evening after dinner and before sleep. I take two tablespoons of ACV with a tablespoon of honey in a glass of water. It is working wonderfully well. I'm assuming that everyone just uses a dosage that works for them? I haven't seen any hard and fast rules regarding that. Also, for how long do you take it? Every day forever? I've seen one site that recommended a month on and month off. I have no qualms about taking it every day. It has even cut my appetite. Thanks again for a great site!"
[NAY] 02/09/2010: John from Sulphur Springs, Texas: "I have suffered from gout for about 9 years, it started in my toes, but about 4 years ago it moved to all my larger joints, ankles, knees, wrists, hands, elbows & shoulders. I was having attacks about every 6-8 weeks. Then I read about ACV & started trying that in hopes that something would work. I started the ACV on 11/29/09 & stopped it on 12/17/09 because I was having one attack after the other. The VA has me on Prednizone & allopurinol for maintenance & are starting me on Indomethacin for when I feel an attack coming on. I read about ACV with Mother & tried that for about 20 days, taking one tsp. with baking soda in 8oz. water twice per day. The gout attacks became more frequent ( 10 attacks in 90 days)they would last from 3 days to 14 days with the latest attack lasting a full 30 days. I would really like to be able to use the Organic ACV with Mother but I am now afraid to try it again. Any suggestions??"
Replies02/09/2010: Alain from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada replies: "Answer to John from Sulphur Springs about ACV and Gout.
I read that 60%-70% of uric acid is eliminated by the kidneys. It would indicate that gout might be an indication of reduced kidney functionality.
Also, being an acid, uric acid may dissolve better if the urine pH is less acidic. It is said that uric acid dissolves 1,000 more times with urine pH of 7 (neutral) than compared to a urine pH of 5 (acidic).
Here are a few recommendations:
Read the following pages, they are related with alkalizing formulas -
http://www.earthclinic.com/CURES/gout_questions.html#Question_1246
http://www.earthclinic.com/Remedies/alkalizing_formulas.html
As a quick fix I would try the baking soda or BS ACV formulas to see if it helps. Careful with BS if you have water retention. But a better formula would be the [ACV or Lemon Juice or Citric Acid] [Baking Soda] [Potassium Bicarbonate or Potassium Citrate] [with a pinch of Epsom Salt (Magnesium Sulphate)]. For the correct amounts see Ted's formula.
Drink a lot of good water to cleanse the system and help dissolve uric acid crystals.
You can also try these and alternate to see what may work. Soak a paper towel with ACV or Epsom Salt concentrated sollution or Milk of Magnesia, and wrap the painful area (then wrap with saran wrap plastic).
Buy yourself some pH paper and measure the pH of your urine. You should see that the pain will decrease as the pH of your urine will increase (I assume that your urine pH will show it is acidic). I recall that after using alkalizing formulas and drinking a lot of water of lot of pain disappeared after 10 hours. During that time, the pH of my urine went from below 5 to above 7.
BS formulas are quick fixes, some say they should not be done foe an extended amount of time. There are formulas that are more complete mineral wise.
I suggest you search the web for alkalizing diet. Seek food that are not detrimental to the liver and kidneys. Avoid alcohol (very acidic), processed food, sugar, synthetic sugar. Reduce red meat and shellfish ... Unfortunately it will probably mean a change in lifestyle, eating more natural. No soda pops, no coffee. When you will find alkalizing food charts you will know what is good and what is wrong.
Search my posts at earthclinic and see other web pages addresses I suggest for pH balance.
Finally good luck
Alain alainwiel[at]yahoo(dot)ca"
02/10/2010: John from Sulphur Springs, Texas replies: "Thanks for your quick responce, I look forward to trying your recommendations & I will keep you informed with my progress. I love the website, it's really nice to have a place that offers natural/alternative options for our health problems. All medications have such terrible side effects, I know the Good Lord gave us the herbs to heal ourselves with if we only would, but it all goes back to greed & money. Shame on the AMA & FDA!"
[YEA] 01/08/2010: Barry from Shawnigan Lake Bc, Canada: "Dear Earth Clinic, thank you so much for posting so many positive comments regarding Apple Cider Vinegar! I recently had my first bout with Gout, and ACV scored an impressive knockout! I had been taking a diuretic for high blood pressure and in my initial research I learned that my medication could be contributing to my gout. It was new years eve and I couldn't get out to see my doctor until the following monday (4 days later) I found your website and learned about ACV. I knew we had some as my wife had asked me to purchase some for home made salad dressings. It wasn't organic with "mother" but rather a typical commercial brand "pure" ACV. Beggars can't be choosers and with nothing to lose, I decided to give it a try. I followed the instructions on your website and began to take 2 tbsp with water, tomato juice, etc. Within 12 hours the swelling crested and within 36 hours I was about 80% better. I was completely cured within 5 days. My Doctor confirmed that my medication could contribute to gout and was very impressed with ACV as a remedy. I decided to read up a little more about the benefits of ACV for my high blood pressure. Well, it's been 9 days now and with my doctors blessing, I've weaned myself off my medication. I've purchased an organic brand with the "mother" (available at most specialty grocery and health food stores) and I'm happy to report that my blood pressure is steady in the 122/80 range and is lower now that when I was on the medication (135/88). Thanks again! Like the oldtimers, I've started to take it straight up (with an apple juice chaser) I have more energy and am continuing my daily routine of 1/2 shot glass 2-3 times a day as I attempt to shed 40 lbs over the next 6 months. It's the miracle I've been looking for and I'm telling the world! Cheers!"
Replies03/14/2010: Michael from Kansas City, Ks replies: "I am curious as to how the ACV is working for you now. I am 43 years old and this is the second time I have been "hit" with gout. As many of you can easily attest the pain from gout is often quite unbearable! I have it in my right ankle this time. The first time was in my big toe on my left foot.
I will try the ACV and see what happens. I have been drinking cherry juice but have really not seen a benefit as of yet. However...I'll give it another shot. I can't be put in the position of NOT being able to work...
Thanks."
[YEA] 12/30/2009: Robm from N. Las Vegas, Nv, USA: "I came down with a bad case of gout in my right big toe. I searched on line and came across this site. I started by mixing 4 ounces of regular store bought apple cider vinegar with 20 ounces of cold water. I added a packet of sweetner to make it palitable. The next morning my pain had gone from an 8 to a 3 or 4. I continued with mixing 4 tablespoons of ACV with 8 ounces of water, 3x a day. It has now been 2 days and I am virtually pain free with full movement of my toe."
Replies02/10/2012: Gordon Gout from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada replies: "I have been a gout sufferer since 2009, went to the dr as I was having severe pain, thought I broke my ankle, to discover the dr diagnosed it as a case of gout, to which he perscribed allopurinol which by reading on the internet burns a hole in the lining of your stomach which encounter pain from, and indomethacin. Indomethacin it works wonderfully. Cherry juice did not work for me as a friend of mine has full body gout and she drinks the cherry juice and is free from pain.So now that I have discovered the ACV with apple juice- oh my god, there is a heaven out there and have been pain free for two years now, and not have to be bedridden for 6 weeks ever again along with the loss of work as well.
Thanks so much"
02/15/2012: Frank from Wollongong, Nsw. Australia replies: "I've been reading your post on Gout attack rescues. Read with interest about the use of ACV. I've been a gout sufferer for the last 3 years and it now attacks frequently in the feet.. I'm usually a very active 51 year old who attends the gym on a regular basis but because of the gout attacks I'm unable to attend.. Tonight I'm trying the ACV remedy for the 1st time.. I've eat some blueberries and strawberrys as well.. Also 3 tablespoons of ACV with water.. I'll keep you posted. I 'm currently on Aurinpol and took the pain killer prednisone tonight because of the pain."
[YEA] 10/26/2009: John from Glendale, California: "Wanting to cut back on my hard liquor consumption, I switched to red wine for about ten days. Just two glasses with my evening meal. Sure enough, it triggered my second gout attack. The first one required medication and took weeks to eliminate the agony. Thank God I found this site and thanks to all who wrote in about organic ACV. I went to the Whole Foods Market immediately and took about 3 ounces with 14 ounces of water. Whoeee that is stronger than straight 151 proof rum!! I did not add honey being diabetic. The pain in my right foot was reduced 80% by the next morning and completely eliminated within 48 hours. You have my complete and total gratitude."
Replies[YEA] 11/28/2011: Henry from Lowell, Indiana replies: "Add me as another success story. After thanksgiving dinner, I woke up on Friday with a lot of pain on my right toe. I know I have a somewhat high level of uric acid but my doctor told me I only needed to reduce my red meat intake (which I've been doing for the last year). What the doctor didn't tell me is turkey meat is also associated with uric acid. I've been consuming a lot of turkey meat to make up for the lack of beef. After reading this thread I decided to visit the grocery store and get the ACV. I drank about three glasses of a mix 10% ACV, 90% water and went to sleep. Next morning, no more limping. It's Monday and I can move my fingers no problem. I can even jump. I'll keep drinking ACV with water, orange juice, etc The taste is not too bad. I'm also adding it to my salads. I'll be ordering ACV capsules soon. Of course, I'll reduce my meat intake. It seems only fish is safe to eat.
Give it a shot even if you haven't had a gout attack."
[YEA] 12/11/2011: E.eddie from Detroit, Michigan replies: "just over a month ago I went to the ER with chest pains (I have an irregular hear heat) and what I thought was a painful blood clot in my right foot. Turns out I had a real high level of uric acid. I was told by my family doctor who I saw for a follow up to lay off all red meat, chicken, turkey. I only eat red meat once a week now and take ACV twice a day with 10 oz of cherry juice. I went back to the doctors office a month later and was retested for the uric acid level and was found to be in normal range. I use the (_____s) brand. This has been wondeful. ArrhythmiaI also noticed that my acid reflux has almost gone away completely! I used to take pepsid ac two to three times a day. now I am lucky if I take it once to twice a week.
Since starting this diet my arrhythmia has almost gone away. I feel so much better then I have felt over the past year. I just need to lose some weight now."
12/26/2011: Gianelli from Atlanta, Ga replies: "Reading the posts here, a question pops out. ACV is supposed to REDUCE acidity (or keep body alkalinity high)? How does that work since the PH of any vinegar is acidic? I'm gonna give it a try anyway but it is certainly counter-intuitive."
[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 10/24/2009: Mel from New Harmony, Ut: "Wow, I spent several hours going through your site and others regarding gout and the causes and cures. I had already started to get hydrated by drinking a bunch of water. The pain that has be on and off for about two months and pretty bad the last couple days has subsided a bit. Well enough that I went to the Movies with my wife tonight. When we returned the pain was back to a higher level. BTW, I have not been diagnosed with Gout, but have all the symptoms. All the foods to avoid I love and have been trying to loose a little weight lately. We eat pretty healthy, mainly Bison and veggies. A couple days a week we eat vegan. So, finally after reading many comments on your site, I decided that since I had some ACV with "Mothers" in it on the shelf in the pantry, I would try 3 Tablespoons in a bit of water. I chugged it down about an hour and half ago. I sit here and can feel a tingle in my foot and the pain is going away as I sit here. I can wiggle my toe up and down with almost no pain, where before I could wiggle my toe, but there was pain. About a 7 on a scale of 1-10, 10 being the most painful.
Wow, is all I have to say. I really didn't expect that. I expected to wake up and have no change and have to take more to feel anything. I will certainly continue this daily. I drive a tour bus and will make sure to take ACV with me on the road. I guess it is like an apple a day....thanks"
[YEA] 11/07/2011: Rn With Gout. from Chicago, Usa replies: "Well I spent the early hours of last night reading all of your opinions and feedback..... I had been awakened by an excruciating pain in my Rt big toe joint, with swelling, redness, hot to touch; I was sure I had injured it somehow. Then it hit me... Gout. I've treated many many patients with gout who were driven to the ER with the pain. They were always treated the same way, medications (Allopurinol, corticosteroids, ibuprofen), fluids and diet restrictions. It seems, as a 50 yo women going through menopause, my symptoms were spot on. I limped down the hall, took the Apple Cider Vinegar in hot water with tea. (Yes it was in the pantry) Shockingly, by morning I was 80% better and able to work. I will share this gem with my patients. It's truly the best response I've ever heard of, and experienced, and it's natural.I know what works for one person may not for another, but it's worth a try!
Take care all"
11/14/2011: Tonyccc from Limassol, Cyprus replies: "Here is my story. I had my first gout attack about 10 years ago. At the beginning I was having attacks every 6 months. Then gradually I was getting them every 3 months, then every month and eventually every week. It started at my big toe and then it was moving sometimes in my knees, and generally all around my joints, in my feet. And the pain was agonising.
I have tried all the cures you can imagine. I tried ACV, lemons, drinking a lot of water, but to no avail. I tried water fasting, juice fasting, baking soda, again without success. I almost gave up meat, limiting it to only once a week , gave up alcohol completely, again no success. I was living on vegetables, lots and lots of fresh fruit, milk , cheese beans and so on. My
eating habits could not be healthier , or so I thought. But my gout was worsening. Then I decided to increase the amount of fruit I was consuming, thinking that if some fruit is healthy, more fruit will be more healthy. Some days I was eating fruit only , others over 10 portions a day. And alas my gout instead of improving it became chronic, it was there all the time. I was desperate I did not know what to do.
And then one day accidentally I read an article about fructose, which is contained in fruit in large quantities. It said that it increases uric acid, in a matter of minutes. Fructose is also present in table sugar, and in HFCS, which is used in soft drinks. I put two and two together and realised what I was doing wrong. I stopped eating fruit and all other sugars, for a period of 3 weeks, and by magic I saw a dramatic improvement. Pain was gone, swelling was gone, I was fine. I re introduced fruit again in my diet but reducing them to 1 or 2 a day, and my gout completely disappeared. I do eat more meat now, and occasionally have an alcoholic drink, and thank God everything seems to be fine. Fructose was my enemy."
10/24/2009: Alexandra from Tumon, Guam: "I know someone with gout and mentioned that apple cider vineger might work for her. She adamantly refuses to use it because she claims that acidic foods cause burning sensations when she urinates. I was disappointed since after reading the testimonies I thought it would be a great alternative to the meds she is currently taking for gout. Any thoughts/suggestions? She currently takes meds for her irregular heart beat as well. Thanks!"

[NAY] 07/23/2009: Crystal from KY, USA: "My husband has been suffering for gout for around fifteen years. Whenever he had an attack the medicine the docter gave him would make him very sick and he would lose weight and become very weak. It was awful to see him in so much pain,he could not even stand for the bed sheet to rub his foot. I decided to try to find a natural cure for gout that might help him so i went searching on the internet and came upon this site. I read all the post about AVC greatly relieving and even curing peoples gout,I got very excited and since we had some on hand I got my husband to take the recomended dose that same night and the next day.I had great hopes that the ACV would help him but my hopes where dashed the next morning when he woke up with his big toe very swollen and in pain. I felt awful! He had not even been having an attack when I got him to try the ACV and now here he was in lots of pain after taking the ACV.....Not only did he have an attack but where he usually only got it in his feet for the next six months its spread from his big toe to his knees and on up into his hand and then into his elbow. All in all the attacks came one after the other for six months. Half of the year he was in almost constant pain! Now he has a HUGE knot on his elbow because the attack there was the worst one.
I have never felt worse in my life watching him in so much pain and feeling that I caused it because it was my idea for him to try ACV. I was desperate to help him and started asking local pharmacies what to do for him and it just so happened that one of the owners happened to have gout himself and told me to get my husband some cherry concentrate, he said it helped him better then anything. I found some black cherry concentrate at a local _____ for twenty dollars and even though I was now weary of home remedies I figured it really couldnt hurt so I had my husband start drinking the cherry concentrate and i am so glad i did because after about a week his attack in his elbow receded and now two months later he hasnt had anymore attacks. He walks better then he has in a long time.
From what I have read on here it seems as if ACV has worked for many people but my advice to anyone that is thinking of trying it for gout is, Please be very careful and weigh all your options before trying ACV or at least start out in a very small dose.
Thank You"
Replies07/24/2009: Michael from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "As you can see from my email below, the ACV helped me 90% but not completely. However, while ACV was helping, it's interesting to note that INITIALLY, my big toe swelled more for about 3 hours with throbbing and some pain before it finally subsided and got it 90% cured quite quickly.
I suspect that the increased throbbing (with some pain) was the ACV sorta "dissolving" the "hardened" uric acid crystals in my toe and later eliminating it from my system. Maybe in your husband's case (15 years) there was just so much uric acid deposits that the dissolving/throbbing/pain process was more intense and takes longer than the 2-3 hours it took for me.
Just a guess; I'm no doctor.. but then again, doesn't seem like conventional doctors know about the true physical effects "earth medicines" either! lol"
09/06/2009: Lightfallonme from Brandon, MS replies: "Have been suffering from 1st onset of gout for months now, from knee down on both legs. Severe edema in both legs. Have not found a cure yet but will try some of the recipes found here. To the woman whose husband suffered from gout for 15 yrs, honey, you may have used the processed ACV. The vinegar you need to use is the organic apple cidar vinegar with the "stringy mother" in it. It's brown & gross looking but is the only one that works. It's loaded with potassium, vit c & nutrients you won't find in the processed junk. Doctors have been useless and I won't take the dangerous meds; however, the organic apple cidar vinegar provides relief & helps get rid of the fluid build-up that's so painful. Will try a combination of the treatments I see here & will let you know what works. ACV does provide enough relief for me to function but attack so severe, guess it's going to take a combination or longer length of time for cure & I'm not willing to wait longer."
09/21/2009: Roey from Somers, Ny replies: "Thank you for the info on ORGANIC apple cider vinegar. I totally agree it MUST be organic. My husband has suffered for gout for years, he was 60 when his first attack came. He was always very active but this horrible ailment stopped him in his tracks..literally. Conventional doctors are no help..they just prescribe meds with all kind of side effects and who knows what kind of problems they will cause down the road. It's a quick easy fix..which most people want. The real cure is possible but most people do not have the fortitude or ability to deprive themselves of all the unhealthy eating habits and mind altering substances that cause all the problems in the long run.My husband went to a medical Doctor who trained in alternative healing with a famous MD and authority on Alternative healing. His prescripion was very simple..but also complex in other ways. He claimed that Gout is a sympton of clogged internal filters which need to be cleansed by detoxing. Basically the kidneys and lover are not functioning to capacity. He gave my husband a protocol which I did with him for support and why not optimize my own health.
For the first 2 weeks cut out everything acidic. Alcohol, caffine, animal fat (all red meat). Basically become a vegetarian. No white flour, refined sugar or gluten or wheat products. 64 oz of water and or herbal tea..no caffine. The next 7 days consists of 16oz of Green Juice from organic greens 4X per day. 8am 11am 2pm and 5pm in addition to 64 oz water/herbal tea. Enzymes and probotics are also recommended as well as other dietary supplements like a quality multivitamin.
Last but not least..get ready for this one..Daily Tap Water Retention Enema 1x per day. 1qt. water in bag with 4 drops lemon juice. Hold water in roll to left side hold 3 minutes if possible, come up to all 4's head slightly lower than your butt..hold 3 min..roll to right side hold 3 minutes..finally position self against wall and raise legs up wall..hold 3 minutes..after this release into toilet. If cramp deep breaths help. and messaging lower abs...This routine helps to relieve toxic substances and toxic effects from fast such as headaches and edginess. Rigourous exercise not recommended. Important to slow down.
The juice fast ingredients are: 1/2 cucumber, handful of parsley, 5 stalks of kale, 3 stalks fennel, 3 stalks of celery and 5 stems of dandelion, all organic. Add a small piece of ginger root. Coming off the fast is very important. Just some brown rice and steamed green vegitable, salads..no vinegar very acidic use lemon juice and olive oil. You cannot jump back into old eating pattern. Vegetarian life style works well for gouts sufferers or limit your animal protein. Rice pasta is a good alternative with olive oil and garlic. Light fish such as sole, flounder, snapper, cod..no shellfish..highly acidic. Try to substitute green tea for coffee which is also very acidic.
My husband has been gout free for 3 years. If it comes back he will just go through the protocol again. A small price to pay for good health and no more pain! Check out the work of Gabriel Cousens and the Tree of Life Rejuvination center. They are very radical and proponants of eating only raw vegetarian food but they have good tips on detoxing and how to do it safely. You can find them on line. Also retreat centers like Kripalu in Lenox Mass. and Omega in Rhinebeck NY offer supervised week long fasts. Good Luck!!! Oh yes..yoga and meditation are great ways to heal the body and the mind and learn to slow down."
09/22/2009: Julie from Ellwood City, Pa, Usa replies: "Cherries are another very successful home remedy to prevent gout. If you can eat fresh while in season, do so; otherwise, buying a can of cherry pie filling and eating the cherries will work also. It is up to you as to whether or not you want to rinse them off. Cherries are more successful than the RX medication Cholchicine for gout. Eat a can of cherries over a weeks time or so; eating just a few a day is all that is required. Simple and effective way to prevent gout "attacks" and faster at getting rid of gout if currently suffering."
10/31/2009: Charcoal from Hong Kong Sar, China replies: "I've got over 10 times of gout attack randomly around 7-8 years and now I'm having the 11th so I found this web site. I agree with Michael when the remedy works it dissolves the crystal so this happened to me is more painful to the joint(imagine the mountain of needles are breaking so you get more needles in the fluid), but after the overnight of deadly painful I will get better.
I didn't try the ACV but my handy remedy is mixing lemon juice with baking soda (half piece of lemon's juice mixing with baking soda until no more bubble developed, then dilute with glass full of water)
Also, I'm taking over the counter painful killer
However, I think any natural remedy is good for minor to moderate cases and I'm sure drinking water is the most natural one.
After first few attacks I never go to physician again because they don't understand your painful and they cannot monitor your situations at home."
[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 07/23/2009: Michael from Bangkok, Thailand: "Worse gout attack since first time and extremely painful (left big toe, or more like foot!), and cherries and medicines didn't cure it this time (worked before).
ACV 2 Tbsp 2x/day with juice worked very well, 90% improvement quite quickly (about 3-4 days) and removed the intense pain and swelling, and could walk 85% fine (kinda limp a bit) again...
However, it's been more than a week since that "big improvement" and I continue taking the ACV, yet there seems to be very little improvement since then, and it's still 5 to 10% painful/immobilized, and still cannot "fully" bend my toe (although before I couldn't bend it at all, couldn't even touch it).
Any comments? =0"
07/23/2009: alain from Ottawa, Canada replies: "Suggestions for gout.
You should get some pH paper and measure your urine pH. I read that 60%-80% of uric acid is eliminated with the urine. If the pH of the urine is for example 7 instead of 5 (very acidic) then 1000 times more uric acid is dissolved in the urine.
You can increase the pH (less acidic) if you take your ACV with baking soda (sodium bicarbonate). If you have water retention, half of the baking soda should be replaced with potassium bicarbonate or potassium citrate.
See http://www.earthclinic.com/Remedies/alkalizing_formulas.htmlApple Cider Vinegar and Baking Soda Formula
Two tablespoon of ACV plus 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda. Take this two to three times a day on an empty stomach. It is supposed to give you more energy. The pH of this formula is about 7.
For People with Sodium Issues and Want to Alkalize
1/8 teaspoon of baking soda 1/16 teaspoon of potassium bicarbonate 1/4 teaspoon of citric acid. Add water to 1/2 glass of water. Take this twice a day once in the morning and once in the evening on an empty stomach. This is done to avoid diarrhea problems, if taken along with food.
More formulas can be found.
Try to find more of my posts in EC for other alkalizing suggestions.
Also, search the internet for "Alkalizing foot baths".
Good Luck

[YEA] 07/21/2009: Blutoe from Austin, TX: "apple cider vinegar dose for Gout: Do you have to use water when you drink your dose... or are 100% apple juice or grape juice acceptable companions. It did rid me of gout over a few days, where before nothing was helping. I have been using them, or a mineral water drink to mask the taste of the vinegar, I just dont want to cancel out any of it's effectiveness, now that I am moving to the maintenance doses. I figured apple or grape juice would be fine, since you can make vinegar from the fruit. any thoughts are helpful."
