Fibromyalgia Questionnaire & Results

Latest Update: 02/10/2012

If you suffer from the widely misunderstood, crippling condition known as Fibromyalgia and would like to anonymously share some of the details of your experience, please take time to answer our QUESTIONNAIRE!

While even many physicians tend to associate Fibromyalgia only with extreme muscle pain & stiffness, the chronic condition includes a long list of symptoms, many of which are severely debilitating. Cognitive difficulties, widespread joint pain, extreme fatigue, gastrointestinal problems and thyroid dysfunction, all play a major role in the crippling nature of Fibromyalgia.

SHARING INFORMATION & EXPERIENCES

The information that you share with us in our questionnaire is summarized in an effort to help those suffering from this disturbing disorder.

Since 2006, we have received over 2,000 completed questionnaire forms, which can reviewed below and in our fibromyalgia archives section (see links at the bottom of this page). Our 2008 SUMMARY OF QUESTIONNAIRES is a great way to explore some of best, uncensored advice and feedback that we have received from more than 820 people that have already responded to our questionnaire.

Here are just two examples of the kind of important feedback you have given us so far...

Cognitive dysfunction, which ranges from concentration & short-term memory problems to brain fog (that borders on dementia in the most severe cases), is a symptom shared by over 93% of those that have completed our questionnaire. And yet, shockingly, many respondents indicate their doctors still don’t even know this symptom is associated with Fibromyalgia!

Similarly, while growing evidence speaks to a link between fibromyalgia and thyroid dysfunction, many in the medical community are unaware of this seemingly important connection. Nevertheless, without even asking a specific question in our survey on thyroid dysfunction, it was impossible to ignore the thyroid problems that are so commonly associated with Fibromyalgia.

Learn about Fibromyalgia directly from those who suffer from the condition!

1   What advice do they have?
2   What initial symptoms do they share?
3   How do their symptoms advance?
4   What are their theories and comments on the condition?
5   What treatments do they suggest?
6   How debilitating are their symptoms during the various stages?
7   How are they treated by physicians, as one symptom after the next slowly emerge?

Please note, the author of "The Cause of Fibromyalgia" has been most generous with Earth Clinic and has helped us compile all of our questionnaires between 2005-2008. We are so grateful for the brilliant, pro bono work he has done on this project.

THANK YOU SO MUCH TO EVERYONE WHO TOOK THE TIME TO ANSWER OUR QUESTIONNAIRE!

EXPLORING QUESTIONNAIRES, BY PERSON
We have added a second tab to our SUMMARY OF QUESTIONNAIRES to help you locate the questionnaire of each respondent. Where were you born: London Ontario
Is this the first time you have taken our questionnaire: yes
If not, why are you returning:
Are you still working: no
What is Your Line of Work: worked as office/clerical staff for life/health insurance
How has Fibro affected your ability to work: I have been on long term disability for two years and my doctors are unable to determine when/if I will be able to rejoin the workforce
How has Fibro affected your life: I have had to limit social activities due to pain/fatigue. Many friends are no longer friends because they simply don't understand. I also have a diagnosed mental health issue which exacerbates the fibromyalgia which in turn exacerbates the mental health problem.

History: Bipolar, Fibromyalgia, Hypothyroidism, Diabetes 2, migraines, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Chronic Fatigue syndrome, Chronic Myofascial Pain syndrome
Did You Ever Have A Long Lasting Virus: no
What were your first symptoms: Likely had it in my teens, definitely had it in my twenties. Spent much of my third year of university missing class due to flu like symptoms that persisted. Was tested repeatedly for mono, but did not have mono. Dr. at the time (early 90s) did not know what the problem was and labelled me a hypochondriac
What are your current symptoms: widespread pain, fatigue, cognitive problems, depression, irritable bowel,
Your age at onset of symptoms: difficult to determine as it was so gradual. Would definitely say I have had fibromyalgia from early twenties at the very least, and likely my teens.
How fast was your rate of decline: I was able to work up until 2 years ago. Since then I haven't been able to work at all. I would say a rather slow rate of decline up to the year prior to my total disability. I was in a very stressful job and they were not allowing a healthy work/home balance.
What are your current symptoms: widespread pain, fatigue, cognitive problems, depression, irritable bowel,
Number of years since you developed symptoms of fibromyalgia: approximately 20-23
Do your symptoms include brain fog: yes
Number of years since you developed the brain fog: have had problems with it for about 10 years
Describe the extent of your brain fog: presently very bad. Some days almost non existent, but other days so bad that I don't seem to accomplish very much
Estimate number of doctors you have seen for Fibro related symptoms: 6
Do your doctors tend to focus on all your Fibro symptoms: My doctors take Fibro into account when dealing with all of my medical problems
Do your doctors treat your symptoms individually or collectively: My doctors treat me as an entire person rather than a body part. (so I'm not just a diabetic patient, I'm a diabetic patient that has the medical conditions described above.)
Describe your experience with doctors: My dad is a doctor and he taught me from a young age to bring my questions and concerns to my doctor and to not be afraid to ask why I was being prescribed things or why nothing would be done. Also, because my dad basically taught me doctors are human, it made it easier to 'fire' one earlier this year that was not a good therapeutic fit. I try to communicate as openly as I can with my doctors so that they have all of the pieces of me to work with (and they have mentioned their appreciation) and if I know it's a first time consult, I ensure that the referring doctor sends the file ahead.
What remedies or medications have you tried: Naproxen, advil, tylenol 3, tylenol 4, Lyrica, Butrans, Tridural, Robaxicet, MSG pain rub, Myoflex pain rub, tiger balm pain rub, A535 pain rub, massage therapy, physiotherapy (including hydrotherapy), acupuncture, vitamin supplements (multivitamin, omega 3, vitamin d), meditation, relaxation exercises, cognitive behavioural therapy for chronic pain patients, nerve block injections, heating pads in winter, ice packs in summer, gluten free diet
What makes you feel better: presently the nerve block injections, tridural, occasional use of tylenol 4, physio, massage, msm pain rub, multivitamins, meditation/relaxation and heat/cold, eating gluten free diet
What makes you feel worse: stress, eating gluten, overdoing things, cold weather, humid weather.
Have you tried avoiding fluoride in your diet: haven't known this is a potential issue
If so, which sources of fluoride: see above
Have you made dietary changes to avoid any other neutrotoxins: I voluntarily gave up gluten which meant that I have had to cook the majority of my meals. I avoid nitrites and I am limiting consumption of diet soft drinks.
Have you tried any thyroid specific treatments: Presently taking thyroid medication
Your theories or comments: I lived in a pulp and papermill town, approx 2 blocks away from the waste lagoon. I've contacted a fair number of people my age from that town and a disproportionately high number of them have developed fibromyalgia.
Are we missing any important questions: not that I can think of
