What is Your Line of Work: Paramedic for 15 years, Own a restaurant and have been a farmer my whole life. Now on SSD.

How has Fibro affected your life: It is completely debilitating. I can not even do things with my young children. I can no longer help out at the family restaurant and I am unable to care for my farm animals.

Number of years since you developed the brain fog: Since the beginning
Describe the extent of your brain fog: Sometimes I forget my name, I forget that I have kids. However I do not know if it is entirely the fault of the illness or the extensive medications that I take.
Estimate number of doctors you have seen for Fibro related symptoms: 27 -- exactly
Do your doctors tend to focus on all your Fibro symptoms: My general doctor does. The multitude of specialists don't really seem to care.
Do your doctors treat your symptoms individually or collectively: Seperately which is why I still see 8 different doctors monthly.
Describe your experience with doctors: My general family doctor is fantastic. My psychologist is fantastic. I appreciate my rheumatologist because he is very knowledgeable with auto-immune disorders but he makes it clear that he doesn't really believe in the diagnosis of fibromyalgia. Many of the doctors are just down right rude. It has been very difficult to find doctors that I like. I do not tolerate doctors that wont listen to me and who do not understand that this illness is horribly debilitating. One of the uroligist that I saw kicked me out of his practice because I told him that he was insensitive and when I had tears in my eyes he told me I needed mental health help. I was angry because clearly he did not read my history or he would have known that I was already seeing a therapist.
What remedies or medications have you tried: Lyrica, Hydroclorothiazide, Synthroid, Amitriptylline, Topamax, Neurontin (previously), pain management including everything from soma, percocet, methadone, fentanyl. I prefer not to be in pain management when possible because I can't do activities with my young children. I just started methotrexate. I have been to extensive physical therapy which does not help at all.
What makes you feel better: Keeping my feet elevated at all times. Pain management does not really work but it takes the edge off. I usually feel better after taking a long nap.
What makes you feel worse: Standing, letting my feet dangle such as in a chair, hot days and sunshine.
Have you tried avoiding fluoride in your diet: no
If so, which sources of fluoride:
Have you made dietary changes to avoid any other neutrotoxins: Yes
Have you tried any thyroid specific treatments: Yes, I am on synthroid even though my thyroid levels are completely normally.
Your theories or comments: I am entirely convinced that fibromyalgia is an auto-immune disease. Either that or it is dangerously mis-diagnosed far to often.

What is Your Line of Work: Dental Assistant Education Instructor
How has Fibro affected your ability to work: Initially the extreme fatigue and body pain were the most noticeably debilitating. But Fibro pain also involves a heavy, mind numbing feeling frequently called Fibrofog which makes it difficult to think clearly and be on target with work tasks, associate with my doctors, students, patients, and fellow workers. The many episodes of forgetfullness did not lend it self well to the arena I worked in nor the professionalism I prided myself in having. At night I would be tired but unable to sleep, which robbed me of the restorative sleep I seriously needed. I worked for about 7 years but felt I was slowly having my life sucked out of me. One day I simply could go no further, I was totally drained, and like a dead battery could go no further. I felt I simply could not live up to my job expectations anymore, because I was unable to perfore the quality of work necessary and I was demanding too much from my fellow workers to keep me afloat. However, I feel I did everything I could do to keep working and to maintain a positive attitude.
How has Fibro affected your life: Much in the same way as it did my employment, except I could also see I was withdrawing more and more from my family and unable to meet the many demands of a mother with 4 teenagers. I would come home from work, walk to the stove, cook up a dinner, be too tired to eat and go to bed. How I ever kept up with all the demands of being a wife, a mother, maintain our home, be active in our church, and work outside the home is beyond me. Slowly withdrew from so many things due to the fatigue and pain I lived with. The first years were bad but then I was able still able to maintain some normalcy in my life. With each passing year I was becoming more and more debilitated. I developed more and more issues such as hypothyroidism, digestive problems, cognitative difficulties. My friends and family kept going on with their lives and I became more recluse with my pain and fatigue. I stopped attending as many social events, church meetings, family functions. Andthe ones I did attend were often a big blur as I pushed my way through life. I have developed many issues and boundaries such as with what food I can eat due to new allergy like sensitivities, or inability to digest that food properly. THen there are the changes in my capabilities. Tasks and hobbies I once enjoy are now impeded because I am no longer able to do them, can't see as well, or find them too tedious. Just as I am sick and tired of being sick and tired, so are my family & friends. I used to entertain a lot, do service projects, work in the yard, and much more. Now as I write this I see a picture of myself, that I don't like and is not reflective of the person I once was. I was very active, had a positive out look, and enjoyed life. Today I have to work hard to be positive and maintain the hope that is so necessary in life.
What were your first symptoms: Fatigue and spasam of muscles across my shoulder and upper back area.
Your age at onset of symptoms: 40yrs
How fast was your rate of decline: over a 15 year period
What are your current symptoms: As far a FMS symptoms, I only have them on rare occassions, usually to do with lack of suffient sleep and / or weather changes. These usually cause me to have soure muscles and serious fatigue. My other symptoms I mentioned in Medical history are what I believe are caused by the Savella and Lyrica.

Number of years since you developed the brain fog: maybe 13
Describe the extent of your brain fog: Forget names, words, slurr words, feel drunk
Estimate number of doctors you have seen for Fibro related symptoms: 10 /15
Do your doctors tend to focus on all your Fibro symptoms: you have to be kidding, no. Or they want to blame my structural (spinal) problems on FMS. I have MRIs showing the spine problems.
Do your doctors treat your symptoms individually or collectively: both depending on which doctor it is
Describe your experience with doctors: A few a very sympathetic, some I can tell still don't believe it is a real illness, or that it is IN MY HEAD as in a mental case. Virginia tends to have very slow to change and accept doctors.
What remedies or medications have you tried: So many I don't recall their names. LOTS of NSAIDs which helped at first but I developed a sensitivity to. Among allergy like symptoms, like COX II rxs they cause me to have swelling and cause me to have more pain. which I can no longer take. Several opiates, Levorphanol which was the best until it was no longer available. a number of drugs used for psycological problems. Valium in very small doses (less than 1 mg) helped a great deal. Neurontin, Lyrica, Savella, Cymbalta, Effexor. I found I did best with Levorphanol for pain and Nuvigil for wake/sleep problems. I take BP meds now and Zetia. Levoxyl for hypothyroid, extra magnesium. I recently was given PanlorSS to replace the Levorphanol.
What makes you feel better: Levorphanol or Panlor SS for pain. Nuvigil for wake sleep. Warm pool exercises / hot tub, sunshine, warm weather with out humidity, prayer, meditation, guided imagery, nature sounds, having my grandchildren and family around, magnesium, good vit and mineral supplement, TUrmeric and Boswella supplements, deep breathing excercises
What makes you feel worse: not getting enough sleep, NSAIDs, Lyrica, Savella, Neurontin, Pork (I am allergic and i caused joint pain) weather change / drop in barometric pressure, over exzurtion, standing up too long, too much salt, infection, artifical sweetners,
Have you tried avoiding fluoride in your diet: no
If so, which sources of fluoride:
Have you made dietary changes to avoid any other neutrotoxins: yes
Have you tried any thyroid specific treatments: yes
Your theories or comments: I have long thought that asthma, FMS, and other muscle spasming problems are related. I recently read some research done with D-Ribose and how it helped FMS as well as people with Diastolic disfunction. I have not tried it but think there is something to it especially seeing I have both these and asthma. Restorative sleep is a big part of it. I wonder if I was exposed to some toxins. I used to live next to a field they would spray chemicals on. Was in a study as a child for polio immunization tx... another thing I have wondered about.
Are we missing any important questions: Yes, I think doing deep breathing excercises at night as well as guided imagery helps get a person into a deep sleep. Good job

What is Your Line of Work:
How has Fibro affected your ability to work: Extreme fatigue, leg pain, sleep issues make me very tired all day and it's hard to focus
How has Fibro affected your life: It has completely changed it. I used to be very physically active (played soccer, biked, walked everywhere). Now I am overweight and sedentary and my legs feel like lead. I can't sit all day or stand all day, and can sometimes stay in bed for 16 hours from having a hard time getting up or getting out of the fog to be alert enough to fully wake up.
What were your first symptoms: Arm fatigue, carpal tunnel symptoms. That heavy ache in the shoulder muscles as if I'd over-exerted myself when I hadn't done anything. I was dropping things, sleeping all the time, just tired.
Your age at onset of symptoms: 27
How fast was your rate of decline: Probably within about 4 months, hands got so bad I had to go to a hand clinic and was diagnosed with severe carpal tunnel syndrome in both hands (in a matter of months!). I then gained 30 pounds rapidly and looked bloated (as if I were on heavy steroids) and my physical activity declined from there.
What are your current symptoms: A lot of nerve pain, loss of muscle and strength. Any amount of exercise can trigger a flare which can take days for it to ease up. Having a lot of sleep issues, brain fog, lack of motivation, mild depression. Currently may be having hormone issues as well which make things worse, and also have high cholesterol.
Number of years since you developed symptoms of fibromyalgia: 13
Do your symptoms include brain fog: yes
Number of years since you developed the brain fog: 13-14
Describe the extent of your brain fog: If I don't have coffee it is very hard to get going and get the motivation to do anything. I don't feel like I get much deep sleep or restorative sleep so I just want to stay in bed in that foggy/daydream state. I have a coffee addiction I am trying to address, but it is hard because without caffeine I just haven't found a way to get that alertness that I need to function well.
Estimate number of doctors you have seen for Fibro related symptoms: 5
Do your doctors tend to focus on all your Fibro symptoms: They ask about the depression, which probably makes me defensive, they don't seem to have an understanding of the pain but only the fatigue.
Do your doctors treat your symptoms individually or collectively: They brush off most of them, and just tell me to take Aleve and act like it's no big deal. I have never had a doctor take the time to really ask about everything.
Describe your experience with doctors: Not very good. The only one who seemed to listen a little more than the others was also a little too eager to prescribe medication- more for the depression than for the pain. The pain meds can't be taken long term, so they always only think about a short term quick fix and not a life-long program to address all the issues.
What remedies or medications have you tried: Aleve, prescription-strength Aleve, antidepressants, stretching, not overdoing it, had one surgery for the carpal tunnel but I still have symptoms.
What makes you feel better: Aleve only takes the edge off the pain, it doesn't help the fatigue or get rid of the pain. Stretching helps my legs a little. I'd like to exercise more but have to stop myself so I don't overdo it.
What makes you feel worse: Too much activity, not enough activity, stress, not enough sleep.
Have you tried avoiding fluoride in your diet: no
If so, which sources of fluoride:
Have you made dietary changes to avoid any other neutrotoxins: I tried taking b vitamins for a while, tried going off of caffeine but still struggle with that. I don't like taking vitamins/pills every day so have slowly just been trying to change what I eat.
Have you tried any thyroid specific treatments: No, my thyroid tests have always come back fine.
Your theories or comments: I am still 99% sure taking Prozac triggered the onset of my symptoms. If it is all neurological/nerve related then that has to be considered.
Are we missing any important questions: Has anyone had specific nerve tests, tissue samples, or brain scans done that showed anything?
