Fever Cures

rss feed

"Fever (also known as pyrexia, from the Greek pyretos meaning fire, or a febrile response, from the Latin word febris, meaning fever, and archaically known as ague) is a frequent medical symptom that describes an increase in internal body temperature to levels above normal. Fever is most accurately characterized as a temporary elevation in the body's thermoregulatory set-point, usually by about 1?2?C.

Fever differs from hyperthermia; hyperthermia is an increase in body temperature over the body's thermoregulatory set-point (due to excessive heat production or insufficient thermoregulation, or both). Carl Wunderlich discovered that fever is not a disease but a symptom of disease.

The elevation in thermoregulatory set-point means that the previous "normal body temperature" is considered hypothermic, and effector mechanisms kick in. The person who is developing the fever has a cold sensation, and an increase in heart rate, muscle tone and shivering attempt to counteract the perceived hypothermia, thereby reaching the new thermoregulatory set-point. A fever is one of the body's mechanisms to try to neutralize the perceived threat inside the body be it bacteria or a virus." (Wikipedia)

BEST REMEDY FOR FEVER: EGG WHITES

12/13/2005: Ani from Ontario, Canada writes: "Hi! I love your site and find it very useful. Thought I'd share something and you can post it if you see fit.

Egg Whites:

By far the best method to lower a high temperature within MINUTES! When I was about 4 or 5 years old, I had acquired a fever so high that I started to hallucinate. My mother was in a panic, she feared brain damage if something didn't lower the fever and FAST. My grandma told her about an old-wives' remedy.

Soak 2 cloths or hankerchiefs in egg whites and put on the soles of the feet (cover with socks). The egg whites instantaneously start to draw the temperature DOWN from the brain (where it is dangerous) to the feet (where it can do no damage). After that incident my mom used this method successfully every time I had high temp. If no eggs are on hand, chopped onion or chopped potato can be applied to feet instead, although egg whites are the fastest method.

The egg whites are also a miracle cure for minor and more severe burns. Soak or coat affected area in egg white. While the egg white is still wet you will feel no pain from the burn. As soon as it dries up the pain comes back so reapplication is necessary. This also prevents scarring from the burn."

01/04/2006: Ani (anisyab[at]yahoo.com) from Ontario, Canada writes,'"I checked with my mom and there is a small revision if using the chopped onion alternative: the onion should be mixed with vinegar. The potato is fine on its own."

1/11/2006: Ani (anisyab[at]yahoo.com) from Ontario, Canada writes, "I have NO idea why the egg white remedy is not more commonly known. In fact, I did a google search and aside from my post on Earth Clinic, found only one website mentioning it as a remedy for burns (for which it is in fact as effective as for lowering temps). It is a fail-safe, non-invasive, purely natural technique that works faster than any drug. I encourage everyone to try this method first, especially when young children are in question and speed is important. Glad you gave it a try Cathy."

2/11/2007: (anisyab[at]yahoo.com) from Ontario, Canada writes, "Hi, Ani again. In regards to the egg white for fever remedy I'd like to make a suggestion. I've noticed some people are writing that they use face cloths or towels to soak up the egg white and put on the feet. I doubt the remedy will be as effective if done that way. The material shouldn't be overly absorbent, my mom used old fashioned kerchiefs because they don't absorb too much themselves but are functional in that they hold on to the egg white. Seems people have had luck with using paper towels. Just make sure whatever you're using to put on the feet is completely soaked and dripping with the egg whites. You might have to use several eggs, not just one or two. When done properly this remedy is sure to work."

2/2/2008: Ani (anisyab[at]yahoo.com) from Ontario, Canada writes: "Hi there, just checked back to see how people are doing with the egg white remedy. Glad to see it's helping a lot of people!

Quick note: the egg whites are useless once they dry up, which can be rather quickly if the temp is high. The feet get very hot and the egg whites can literally COOK! You must check and REAPPLY as many times as necessary until the temp is back to normal. Don't give up after one application, it will work but the egg whites must be WET. My mom usually reapplied once or twice but you can keep going in case of a stubborn fever"

EC: THANK YOU, ANI!

I looked for the ACV and the store didn't have any. Had to resort to the motrin just to try to get it down. Will try to find he ACV tomorrow."
01/22/2012: Jessica from Billings, Mt replies: "That sucks! I have a horrid allergy to egg whites and my baby girl has a fever :( How long do they have to wear the goopy socks?"
02/04/2012: Stephanie from Lindenhurst, New York replies: "This remedy worked for me when my daughter had a fever of 104.5 and had already been given ibruprofen and next dose was still 3 hrs away. Mixed up those egg whites and after 10 minutes on her feet the fever had already come down 1 degree... left them on for 20 minutes and the fever was 101.5."

[YEA]  02/07/2007: Dixie from NYC writes: "Hi, I found this site and am amazed by what I am reading. My mother always told a story of how in the thirties, my uncle was a little boy and desperately ill. The doctors could not figure out what was wrong or how to help him and finally told my grandparents to prepare for the worst. Apparently all he kept asking for was vinegar (my mom never specified if it was ACV) and when things looked really bleak, they decided to let him have it since he never stopped asking for it and since there was no real reason to deny him, however bizarre it seemed to give it to him. He apparently struggled to drink it, but got through a whole bottle in a few hours despite his weakness. The fever suddenly broke and he fully recovered, and to this day no one in my family really understood how. Now I'm getting a clue as to why! So, I thought I would try the honey/water/AVC drink three times a day- today is day 5 and while I didn't see any real weight loss until today, today my jeans are suddenly loose! Also been using it as a toner and guess what! No trip to the dermo like I planned because my pores are getting smaller on their own! Depression doing a lot better too - though the jury is still out on that since today I was a bit down after a few up days - will check back in and let everyone know- but WOW! I'm amazed! My little uncle was really on to something, clearly!"

We had been giving acetominaphen and ibuprofin. I immediately searched/found this website. To ensure things moved quickly I gave him about 4oz ACV, honey, water to drink and soaked a wash cloth with ACV and switched between his forehead and stomach/chest. Within 30 minutes he was back down to 102. 3 and still falling. From here on out I will use ACV before I turn to over the counter fever reducers."

She had also been taking motrin, but it did not help. I google searched and found your site. I wanted to do the egg whites, but we had just finished off the eggs this morning. I saw the posting for apple cider vinegar, which we had, and tried it just as described. The last time I checked her fever had dropped, and is nearing normal. The smell is the smell, I mean, it's vinegar, but the ends justify the means. What's a little odor, when you get a lowered fever in return? Thank you so much for providing this information for free. I have added this site to our favorites list."

His fever lasted for 3 days and continuoulsy taking lots of medicine.. Until someone told us to use vinegar ( not the ACV but the real liquid vinegar) as an alternative for water.. So instead of soaking the towel with a water while applying tepid sponge bath all over his body we use the vinegar.. I was really amazed upon using it especially that I am into a medical field.. It may sound so awful but geeeezzz, I dunno what happened but trust me. On the next day he was well with a normal body temperature.. It's not expensive and very effective.. There's no harm on trying anyways.. But as a first timer, hands up on this..."

She was told by an elderly friend to soak a wash cloth in apple cider vinegar and place one on my forehead and one on my stomach, while it smells like all get out, my mom was able to check me out of the hospital and from that day onward, it's literally been a life saver to all the children in our family with high fevers. It takes about an hour to break the fever."

My 18 month daughter had a high fever of over 100.2 degrees. I freaked out since she has never really been sick with a fever before. I called my mom, who still lives in South Africa, for advice the next morning, as my daughter's fever still had not broken. She advised me to bath her in a tub of lukewarm water (not hot, but cooled down) with a cup of apple cider vinegar. I did it this evening before bedtime, a 7 pm. At 9pm my daughter woke up crying. I went into the room, to find her wet from sweat, and cooler! Her fever had broken!"

Hope this ACV works this time."

[YEA]  04/22/2010: Diana from Eureka, Ks. writes: "Baking soda bath to drop fevers

You can use a small bowl and bath [face-head], neck, chest, & back or submerge body in tub. If using a small bowl, use 2 parts baking soda to 1 part (cool water-the colder it can be, the better). BE CAREFUL & LIGHTLY APPLY, AS NOT TO SHOCK THE PERSON. Do not rinse and apply often, fever should go down fairly fast. Once person is feeling better, bath to wash off baking soda. If submerging bath, tub does not have to be full. 2-1 parts, same as above. Just enough water to get wet good, (have water as cool as can be stood). Only stay in tub long enough, to soak or wet down entire body,(just a couple minutes). Do not rinse off, wait til fever has dropped. I have personally used this for many years, as my children grew up, passed down in my family. IT WORKS!"

[YEA]  08/21/2008: Helen from Southport, Australia writes: "This is another way of applying egg white for reducing fever that I learnt from my Chinese Grandma. Hard boil the egg and remove the egg yolk. Put the hard boiled egg white including the shell in a handkerchief. Twist the content into a ball and massage body from head to toe. Brings the temp down instantaneously. My Grandma would also insert a silver ring in the egg white content when massaging. Silver would change to different colours when rubbed on different patients. This was used to diagnose the cause of the fever and then she would use (ying/yang) herbal treatment for the illness. Sadly, I am unable to read the silver ring. My children always ask for an egg massage when they have high temperature and it always does the trick."

I tried the wash cloths soaked in apple cider vinegar with one on her tummy and one on her forehead for an hour, but there was no change. It just went up. Then I tried the egg whites. I got some cloth all goopy with the stuff and tried it for an hour reapplying once and there was no change. A tepid bath is what helped her. Now her temp went from over 104 to now it's 99.9. We didn't stay in the bath long. I hope it lasts, but I'm prepared to give her another if I need to! She hates the doctors and having stuff stuck up her butt! I saw the feedback on the egg whites and told my wife & we gave it a try. We put one egg white in each one of his socks and put them on his feet then covered them with a plasic ziplock baggie. After 30 minutes his temp came down to 102.4 and after an hour he was at 101.3! It worked. I took off the scoks and gave him a cool bath in a 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar. After the second hour we are down to 100.5. I love these natural remedies. . . No doctors and no medicine. Thank You!!!"

Tonight I was feeling slightly better and fell asleep on the couch, under a blanket, only to wake up two hours later shaking and trembling. It scared me, because the only other time I had trembled like this during a fever was when I had blood poisoning twenty years ago from an infected insect bite. I have no insurance and am broke, so was panicking about going to an Emergency Room and not being able to pay the bill.

Naturally, I went to earthclinic to find a cure... and tried out the eggwhites. I tell you, trying to separate whites from yolks while shaking like a leaf isn't easy :/

I used 3 eggwhites and tissues, and I had a garbage bag ready to place my feet in. The most amazing thing happened... I wrapped a soaked tissue around my right foot, and I INSTANTLY STOPPED TREMBLING, with only one tissue applied! Wrapped my left foot into a eggwhite soaked tissue as well, put my feet inside the bag and sat under a blanket, watching TV for distraction. I kept the compresses on for about an hour. My fever didn't break though, and I was out of eggs, but I was feeling a lot better and most importantly, I wasn't freezing any more, and the shaking had disappeared completely.

I then took a shower, ending it with cool-warm-cool and paying special attention to my legs, cooling them (groin and knee pits especially).

Thank you, earthclinic. You saved me from panic."

I thought it was nutty, my mom had never heard of this one before, but the ibuprofen I had given my son wasn't working. I figured what the heck, what was there to lose. I soaked a couple of paper napkins (I don't use paper towels for environmental reasons and someone here said not to use regular cloths) in two egg whites beat up, put the napkins in 2 gallon size plastic bags, and spread the napkins out on the bottom of his feet. I put the bags back on over his feet and then his socks. I did that at 6:57, by 7:15 his temp had dropped from 102.8 to 100.6. Amazing!! Thank you all!!"

When I questioned him, he said both his ears and his throat hurt. He was burning up. I put hyrdogen peroxide in each ear, and left it in for 1/2 hr each ear. In the past, when I have a raging sore throat, that has competely removed the pain. I also gargle with it, and make sure to spit it out. I did not let my 4 yr old gargle with it, as it was not food grade, and I didn't want him swallowing it. This removed his ear pain, but he had a raging fever yet.

I used the egg whites on paper towels and put a pair of my footies on over them. Within 10 minutes his fever was down. I then used the washclothes soaked in apple cider vinegar on his chest and head, and within 15 minutes he was down to a normal temperature. That was amazing! I then made him a organic black cherry tea, (simply bcuz that was what I had on hand) with Apple Cider Vinegar and honey and a bit of lemon (he loved it) just to aid things along. Love this site. Our ancestors had it right. We need to go back to those old fashioned ways."
