05/10/2012: 8children from Dayton, Ohio, United States: "My daughter presented with this two weeks ago and Atavan knocked out the seizures. Upon returned home she had 3 seizures a day. That continued for 1 week. On day 11 after 1st seizure and taking 312 mg. Twice a day of depacote she had 11 seizures. day 12 - 14 seizures. day 13 - 16 seizures. day 14, admitted for eeg study and given the depacote and kepra. Seizures continue to increase and now on day 16 she is having clusters of 2, 3, 4 or five seizures all in a close span of 5-10 minutes and all 20-45 sec in length. I plan on no sugar tomorrow as just feel the hospital food is worse than her diet at home.

What is your thoughts on the ketogenic diet and have you seen success with that in a child? She had a uti and strep with the initial seizure episode that took us to the hospital. Before that, healthy child, happy, smart and loving life. Now sweet as can be just hard to see her go through seizures."

It was telling the story about how coconut oil decrease seizures, it went on to say many other things affected by the brain disfuctioning were also helped. Lecithin is also another very interesting thing rich in omega 3 and 6 and ALA which are also good for the brain. Both certainly worth researching. Have you tried posting on the Facebook page for earth clinic, Asking for tried and tested remedies and results. Good Luck.:)"

01/05/2012: Francisca from Zug, Zug, Switzerland replies: "Peggy, I was just about to post a few comments about a book I am reading which might help quite a few people on this site when I saw your question. The book is called Transdermal Magnesium therapy by Mark Sircus (I believe that it has been mentioned on this site before! ). There is not much about epilepsy, at least not in the half I have read so far but maybe enough to help you!

I will also advise this book to anyone suffering from cancer and with children with ADD and ADHD, as I saw quite a few questions about those problems recently! One thing, read also the references sections. Usually I don't read those but he includes as lot of information in them, including useful links to sites that might be of help! As I said I haven't finished reading this book yet but, despite the many repetitions I think that it is very much worth reading!"

01/05/2012: Louwrence from Rustenburg, North West South Africa replies: "Hi Peggy, Apart from the mms try to get the child off of all sugars starches candies, soda pops, soya, cereals in other words all forms of starch. Maybe magnesium & iodine will also help."
01/05/2012: Peggy from To, Ca replies: "Thank you guys!!! She takes 500mg magnesium, haven't tried iodine. 3 seizure since last night, help me help me help me!"
01/05/2012: Linda from San Francisco, Ca, Usa replies: "Hi Peggy, Have blood sugar seizures been ruled out? According to what I have read, not only here, but in other places, seizures happening for other reasons can be mistaken for epilepsy. At the link below, Bangkok Ted talks about this briefly:

http://www.earthclinic.com/CURES/pH.html

This was also written up in the research of Dr. Carey Reams, IIRC not only Diabetes, but Hypoglycemia can produce seizures.

There are also certain intestinal parasites that can cause seizures.

There is also a Millipede or Centipede (I do not recall which) whose bite can produce them, this actually happened to a friend of mine in Arizona. She had seizures from it for years before the docs found out what it was.

I hope this may give you some ideas for further research.

Linda"

01/05/2012: Rsw from Uniontown, Oh replies: "The Ketogenic Diet from Johns Hopkins hospital in Baltimore, MD has helped many young children with epileptic seizures with no side effects. It is supposedly also effective with adults. Jim Abraham made a movie about his discovery of the diet while his son was suffering with anti-convulsive drugs. Meryl Streep is in it and it is titled "First, Do No Harm" or something like that."
01/05/2012: Zorro from Milwaukee, Wisconsin replies: "Hello, This 15 year old with seizures is not drinking anything with aspartame are they? It has been known to cause seizures.

Zorro"

01/06/2012: Debbie from Melbourne, Australia replies: "I also think you need to rule out aspartame use. Diet drinks, chewing gum, anything "sugar free" could be suspect. Caffeine sports drinks... The list goes on. What is her diet like?"
01/20/2012: Shari from Rockville, Md, Usa replies: "I am a natural health practitioner and my daughter, 4 years old has epilepsy.

I have tried various herbal and nutritional remedies because I believe chemical drugs has lots of side effects specially for kids.

Recently, I have done lots of research and study abour her epilepsy ( mostly happens in the morning), I found that I need to improve alkaline. I found out that fat allergy can be the cause of her epilepsy ( she is allergic to meat fat, milk fat, ... since her metabolism and absorption has issues). I studied a book that says sulfur deficiency can cause fat allergy. Food sources of sulfur such as onion, radishes, turnip, horseradish, cranberries, mustard, dill, spinach and eggs can help to reduce fat allergy and epilepsy caused by fat allergy.

More fruits ( apple, carrot, cranberry, grape, ... ) and vegetables help to keep the blood alkaline and reduce epilepsy seizure."

02/27/2012: Mom2nj from Mahwah, New Jersey, USA replies: "My son (9 years) recently started having night seizures. After doing some research and watching him at night I found out that he sleeps with his mouth open. Also while doing the EEG the nurse asked him to breath out thru his mouth- or HYPERVENTILATE - to induce a seizure. That got me doing research into the connection between seizures and hyperventilation. Then I found the following website. http://www.normalbreathing.com/d-seizure-threshold.php

After starting the Buteyko breathing method and taping his mouth at night to enable nose-breathing, his seizures stopped completely. So please check it out. You dont need to buy anything to do this. More info is available on Youtube and other sites.

I have used this "Buteyko breathing method" for my older son to stop his Asthma. After being on several medications and 2 inhalers daily for 4 years, he was able to go medicine free with in a week of starting Buteyko breathing method. This method is explained in a book by Teresa Hale called " Breathing Free". Try to get it from a library. It is very easy to follow.

This may sound too simple. But please try. IT WORKS.

Good luck."

12/07/2011: Shaun from Malaysia: "Hi Ted,

  • Very impressive with your research on epilepsy and wish you can help us to overcome our nightmare.

  • Actually my son having an epilepsy at the age of 15 yrs old and having tecgatrol for 1 1/2yrs but the medicine does not really help him and every time we see doctor's the dosage will increase from 200mg to 1800mg per day. Then myself and my wife decided to drop off the medicine and we face a withdrawal symptom of the drug. We have being hunting all around the bushes to get best for him but still fail. Currently he is in Chinese medication but the epilepsy still comes.

  • I read thru your forum, some say because of magnesium deficiency, it caused the epilepsy but could you help us with more traditional way to overcome the nightmare. What is best to be used:-

  • 1) Baking Powder Sodium bicarbonate (what the function then, how to use and any brand)

    2) Epsom salt - (what the function , how to use (drink or bath) and type of brand)
Awaiting kind help from you. Thanks"

12/06/2011: Kathy from Lees Summit, Missouri, Usa: "Ted,

I am a desperate mom to help my 16 year old son (149 lbs. - 5.9 is how tall). To tell my story short. My son was severely autistic at age 3 and was cured doing natural things with diet and supplements under a doctors care. He was re-evaluated 4 years ago and they said he was only ADD. He is mainstreamed in the classroom, does taekwondo, sings, water ski and tubes and more. Most people now who never my son has no idea he has ever had autism. With prayer, diet, essential oils and supplements my son was cured.

On Aug. 10, 2011 out of no where my son woke up and had an 8 min. Grand mal seizure then 4 days later another and they diagnosed him with Epilepsy. We took him to Mayo clinic in rochester for second opinon and they just want to give him more drugs. He has seizure activity all over his brain and no indication what so ever when he will have one. My son who rarely ever takes medication because he so healthy is now taking 1500 mg. of Keppra twice a day for a total of 3000 mg. I have always avoided processed food, artificial colors and flavors and try to eat grass fed meat and organic vegetables. He also has kefir made with raw milk (about 2 cups a day). He takes liquid magnesium, b6 vitamins, multi vitamin, cod liver oil, buffered c, probiotics, UBQH, SEROTONIN, B 12, chlorophyll complex, paratox 22 and garlic (for parasites for dirty lake we go to), digestive enzymes, calc. D. Glucurate, silymarin and artichoke extract (for liver). We take all of this under a doctors supervision. He also takes transdermal glutathione.

My son has had to stop everything he enjoys because of his bad seizures and this drug Keppra is taking his life away. My husband is afraid to stop the keppra because of more seizures. His seizures were getting worse because each one it was taking longer for him to wake up (almost 1 hour).

We started chiropractic help two weeks ago and he had a 2 min. seizure two days ago but actually woke up in 15 minutes which was the best yet. But my neurologist wants to increase his keppra more. My chiropractors wants us to wait because she said this will make it harder for her to work on his detox because the drugs are so bad for him.

We know he is full of heavy metals and my chiropractors wants us to check in a way to get more glutathione in him. We tried 4 years ago the IV form but everytime he did he would get sick which meant his detox was not working good enough so we stayed on the transdermal.

I have no idea why this is happening with my son and would love some advice. They also found a small cyst in his MRI but of course said it was nothing to be concerned about.

    Any suggestions?

    Kathy"

    Replies
12/06/2011: Debbie from Melbourne, Australia replies: "Kathy, epilepsy is a magnesium deficiency. Maybe he is not taking enough magnesium. Have you tried transdermal magnesium? Magnesium chloride is best and adding it to bath water is a quick way to get it into the body through the skin.

You can also use epsom salts in the bath (magnesium sulphite) but it is not as long lasting."

12/06/2011: Raw from Uniontown, Oh replies: "I was reading the book, "Honest Medicine" by Julia Schoepick, and one of the chapters is about the ketogenic diet that is used at Johns Hopkins Hospital for young children for curing their epilepsy. It is very effective with young children, and some have stayed on it for many years with no harm. Most can get off it and have no more seizures after a few years. I don't know if it would work on your son, because of his age, but you could look into it since it wouldn't hurt him and might help. I'm sure the people at Johns Hopkins could advise you about whether or not it would be helpful. Good luck!"

11/23/2011: Timh from Louisville, Usa replies: "Claudia, never abruptly stop needed meds especialy after using them for yrs. Also, never abruptly begin nutrition therapy in high doses. I use epsom salt / sodium bicarbonate foot-bath thereby eliminating oral use. Begin with a small pinch of each in foot-bath. Inform your Dr. that you are taking the minerals as they help the body in its many functions. If successful, the meds may be reduced to smaller mg.

Consider a whole-food multivitamin that has a balanced profile of nutrients. I have read the chinese herb Scullcap is good for seizures. Hope this helps."

11/23/2011: Seline from Mtl, Qc replies: "Epsom salt / sodium bicarbonate foot-bath, does it work for stop seizure? I would like to try."
11/23/2011: Debbie from Melbourne, Australia replies: "Magnesium chloride flakes in the bath or foot basin apparently last longer in the body than epson salts (although epson salts, being magnesium sulphate, are good).

If anyone lives near the sea, sea water is a much more concentrated form of magnesium and you should paddle or swim in the sea water for up to 20 mins a few times a week."

10/11/2011: Mel from Mansfield, Pennslyvania : "I was wondering if anyone knew, if there is still activity there on the eeg, can that be something else other then seizures. My daughter has been on keppra for a month now and she is so upset she was told she couldn't ride her horse for at least 6 months or longer and cannot drive and she just got her permit and I do think some of this is coming from stress and how she deals with it and it can also be hormonal right?

Ever since she had teeth she grinded them too wondering if that might be a sign of some sort. She is making some progress she is not drinking caffeine and we do know her heart hurts when she drinks caffeine and heart rate is up too... More then normal it is over 100 when that happens she is 17 yrs old.

And now we are also know lighting bothers her in school she had a hard time keeping her eyes open today in school they hurt she said so.. I'm sending her a pair of sunglasses to school with her tomorrow to see if it helps. So any advice would help please. The quickest way to get a lot of magnesium into the body is transdermally (via the skin). 09/24/2011: Heather from Boca Raton, Fl: "I have been having seizures since I was 2. I am now 21. I have tonic clonic (grand mal) seizures and all the doctors I have been to have never been able to completely control them. I have been on almost every anti-seizure drug thats out there, I have had brain surgery to try to remove the part of my brain thats causing the seizure, I have had a vegus nerve stimulator implanted and I am still having seizures! Most of my seizures occur while I am sleeping and because of this I do not know exactly how many I am having. I am on 3 different drugs. I am looking for other options out there that my nuerologist does not offer or know of. There has to be more natural treatments out there!

I read about the magnisium helping seizures. How much should I take and in what form (pill, bath, oil)? PLEASE if anyone out there has some advice or answers on how to get my seizures under control I would love to hear them!?!"

09/25/2011: Debbie from Melbourne, Australia replies: "Heather, so sorry to hear what you have gone through. Apart from the magnesium section on earthclinic have you read in the ailments section seizures or epilepsy that may be of some help to you.

By the way one of the best ways to get magnesium into your body is to swim in the sea water (cheap too). The sea is a magnesium bath. I see you live in Florida.. Even if you just walked in, or paddled in the water for 30 minutes that would be getting magnesium into your body. If you swim in the water for 1/2 hour even better. Do you have any sea water baths in your area? Pill form is not as good as through the skin "Transdermally"."

09/25/2011: Bess from Calgary, Alberta, Canada replies: "Hi Heather - Have you read these testimonials here on Earth Clinic (click link below):

    http://www.earthclinic.com/CURES/epilepsy.html

Quite a few people mentioned magensium deficiency; another mentioned a very good book about healing epilepsy naturally.

One thing for sure: you need to stay away from anything with artificial sweeteners (like aspartame - very deadly), artificial flavourings, processed foods, etc.

I hope you find something that works. Take care, Bess"

09/26/2011: Nicholas from Edison, New Jersey, Usa replies: "Heather... Steven Rogat, a spiritual healer (a shaman) says that epilepsy is a spiritual condition, at the soul level. (I suggest you Google all of this. ) Referring to the soul that we are, he says... "Epilepsy is an inability to totally seat oneself in the body, as well as an inability to totally leave the body, as we normally do when asleep. That's why many seizures are experienced when we are very tired, or when we are on our way to sleep, or upon awakening. We start to leave the body, but can't totally, so we start to come back. But we can't come back totally, so we start to leave, to come back, to leave, to come back, and so on. This coming and going at an accelerated rate creates the shaking. We are neither totally aware (in the body) nor asleep (out of the body). We are in-between, continually trying to get to one place or another. Most often we leave completely or black out, however briefly, and then the seizure passes and we can be here again completely. Epilepsy can originate within the womb when we are not sure whether we wish to be born or not. It can start in childhood, or at other times in life when we think about (on a soul level) whether or not to stay on the earth."

My suggestion is you consider doing spiritual healing for a change ... Such as pranic healing, it deals powerfully with the chakras and the meridians... also do yoga exercises which also deals with chakras and meridians. Another powerful spiritual healing process is yoga breathing A.K.A. rebirthing, conscious breathing, holotropic breathwork.

There must be such spiritual healers in Florida. Good luck."

09/26/2011: Heather from Boca Raton, Fl replies: "Thank you so much everyone who contributed advice. At this point I am willing to try anything. I actually live less than a mile from the beach. I will try swimming in the ocean on a consistant basis for awhile and see if it helps. I started taking a 1/2 tsp of epsom salts every morning with orange juice. I am going to get blood work to test my magnisium levels soon and I will let everyone know the results.

    Thanks again"

Everyday he get about 2 or 3 seizures for about about 15 or 20 minutes. His MRI report notice that two small RT MAXILLARY POLYPS and EEG report GRAND MAL EPILEPSY. By viewing the comments, I start giving him EPSOM SALTS, 1 teaspoon in orange jus at night but in vain.....

    please help us out
    (thanks in advance)"

09/11/2011: Debbie from Melbourne, Australia replies: "Soonitah, rather than let your son eat the epson salts, he is much better having a bath with epson salts dissolved in the water (at least 500g-1kg). It gets into the skin quicker via the skin. Better than epson salts (magnesium sulphate) is magnesium chloride flakes.

If you are near the beach/ocean the best thing he can do is to swim in the ocean as much as possible or to even just sit in the water or put his feet in the water. The sea water is full of magnesium and other minerals."

09/11/2011: Connie from Slc, Ut: "Hi Soonitah; Infants with B12 deficiency often have seizures, and it is considered to be rare that children and adults have seizures because of this. I have read some case studies that prove otherwise. Doctors believe that a serum B12 test result that falls into the normal range means that B12 is OK. This is incorrect. There are many great researchers and doctors that are treating patients for numerous neurological conditions that do not accept the so called normal range as such. They pay respect to how the patient responds to therapy.

B12 injections could be considered for epilepsy. Subcutaneous injections of methylcobalamin into the buttock has been shown to be very effective with a large variety of conditions. But it is sometimes difficult to obtain. Compounding pharmacies can order it. (It must be fresh and protected from light). Some people respond well to hydroxocobalamin, and some, though less, respond to cyanocobalamin. Sublingual lozenges of methylcobalamin are also effective. If high dosages of B12 injections are started, make sure that potassium levels in blood are in good supply as high B12 can lower potassium especially in beginning stages of therapy."

I read a lot of articles on this wonderful website & I was inspired. I'm now on treatment (Epilim), which I want to stop taking. 08/25/2011: Debbie from Melbourne , Australia replies: "Andy, a better way to take magnesium rather than epson salts is to try and get Magnesium oil and rub it into your skin (transdermally) or also have it in the bath. Or you can buy magnesium chloride and make the magnesium oil yourself. The magnesium in Epson salts don't last as long as the magnesium chloride.

Also the best way to get magnesium into you is to swim in sea water. That is much much more concentrated than epson salts or even magnesium chloride. Do you live near the ocean?

There is a great website that discusses this magnesiumforlife.com"

08/30/2011: Andy from Joburg, South Africa replies: "Hi Debbie,

Thank you for your valuable advice. I will definitely try the Magnesium oil remedy; unfortunately I don't live near the ocean but do visit places with an ocean. What do you think of 'Coconut oil'?"

I was then prescribed 200mg Tegretol CR twice per day. Up until 2011, I suspected that seizure activity might be happening and I had another EEG done, I do not have the terminology of the my latest report but it was very similar to the first one so the meds was increased to 300mg Tegretol CR twice per day. It is my intention to be off this drug b/c of my reactions to it. I am generally tired and sleepy and I have noticed some memory and concentration problems. Also, I have weight gained and menstrual problems. Any suggestions for my conditions. I intend to have babies and I would like something that is safe for me both pre, during and post pregnancy. I live in the Caribbean. Any suggestions??"

03/02/2011: Ktjdck5 from Jeffersonville, In, Usa: "I am a new member and I have read over some of the questions and comments under the epilepsy area. I seem to have a unique case. My daughter is now 11 and 1/2 years old. She has been on Keppra for a little over 2 years. She had a genetics test done which revealed she has a DNA deletion that causes her to have seizures along with delayed developement and symptoms of ADD, ODD, OCD, and learning disabilities. She recently as in 6 days ago had a tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizure because we ran out of her meds for a little over a week. She's only had a total of 3 in the past three years and this one was the worst. It was so scary.

My question is this, will any of the things I've read about help her as well? Is it safe to use for someone like her? Is there anyone else out there with the same condition? Seizures brought on by DNA deletion. When we first discovered she was even having seizures they were absence seizures (petit mal) but we really didn't know that was going on. I thought it was just part of her developemental delay and the doctors were saying she was mildly retarted. She would just stare off into space for about half a minute or so and then right back to where she started. I want so badly to get her off prescription meds but safely."

I cracked my skull in three places, lost 3 1/2 units of blood, was in surjery for HOURS and was in a coma for 4 days! Dr's in Rochester told my parents I would probly be in a coma for 6-8 months if I lived and they didn't think I would make it through the night!!!! 4 days later I came out of the coma and exactly 2 weeks after the accident I was sent home! A few months later I was walking home, don't remember walking 12 blocks, couldn't open the door and when my mother did I collapsed in her arms! As the years have gone by, The Dr's in Rochester have told me I don't have seizures! But the episodes have gotten worse and worse! I now have Grandmall seizures so bad I am breaking bones!!! in the 1990's the Rochester Dr's did a CAT scan and they also bought the EEG results that a Dr. from Abbott had done! They told me the CAT scan didn't show anything and that the Dr. who did the EEG obviously didn't know what he was doing because he said I have seizures and infact I had one when he did the EEG!!! Excuse me, But I do have seizures and I will listen to the Dr. from the cities before I will listen to the Dr's at Mayo!!! What can I do about these seizures, I am Lost, Scared and Very Upset!!!! I can't work, I can't watch my Grandchildren, I can't be left alone, I can't do ANYTHING!!!! I am a 46 year old who will never have anything or amount to anything because of these seizures!!!! Within 2-3 days afterwards, limbs started flailing like a "body quake". I realized that this was happening when I was near someone else or the doctor approaching me. When they backed off, it subsided. Later saw that I am extremely sensitive to EMF and even fall down over underground water veins. What I'm trying to get to is that this could all be a body's reaction to the trauma of the accident and your body is trying to shake it off/out. Read "Waking The Tiger" by Peter Levine for a good explanation as to what MIGHT be happening regards to trauma being trapped in your body. What helped me a GREAT deal was cranial osteopathy with an experienced practitioner. YOU are the one who is going to solve it. Tune in and heal. Good luck in your healing quest."
05/22/2009: Joyce from Joelton, Tn replies: "Hello Cynthia,

You are a 46 year old creation of the Supreme Being and God doesn't make junk, so you are somebody and amount to something at least in his eyes. Sounds like you are having a tough time of it at present and sounds like you and the one who did the EEG are right. Since this started after a severe automobile accident, it most probably is from damage to the brain in the accident, but from the prognosis given to your family and the rapid recovery to the point where you are now, tells me somebody is on your side and has been since the accident. I can't say it will work for you, but eclamptic pregnant women are given magnesium sulfate (Epsom Salts) IV to keep them from having seizures during a crisis. If the taste doesn't turn you off, you get a 2 lb. box of epsom salts at places like the Dollar Tree for $1.00. My son recently purchased a 4 lb. package of epsom salts at Walgreens for $3.50. I would recommend trying 1/2 tsp. of epsom salts dissolved in water morning and evening. The taste isn't that bad but rinse the mouth out after taking and the taste is gone. If the taste bothers you, it can be put into empty capsules but the capsules will probably be more expensive than the epsom salts.

Cynthia, please on-line search "excitotoxins" and pull up all references to neurosurgeon Russell L. Blaylock. There was a 1 hr. video on You tube with him but I don't if it is still there or not. Dr. Blaylock blames the excitotoxins for causing headaches, seizures, ALS, Alzheimers disease, Parkinson's Disease as well as others. The 2 major excitotoxins are Monosodium glutamate (MSG) and aspartame. The more highly processed the foods you eat the more MSG and aspartame you are getting. Most all diet foods and drinks are full of aspartame, which is usually identified as aspartame, NutraSweet, or Equal in the ingredients list on the product. The other thing you need to search is "names MSG hidden under". Print this list out and go into your kitchen and diligently read all ingredients on everything you eat or drink, even your raw meats that you must cook.

If 1/2 tsp. of epsom salts twice a day doesn't get those seizure under control, you can increase it by 1/2 tsp. (3/4 tsp) morning and evening. Your body will let you now if you get too much because your stools will get loose. This is the only unwanted side effect expected and you will know when it happens. Another way to increase magnesium intake without the laxative effect is to put a cup or two in your warm bath water and enjoy a good soaking while your skin absorbs some magnesium for you.

Lots of luck and keep us posted on your progress. If it works for you it will probably work for other EC responders also."

I TURNED IN MY DRIVERS LICENSE AFTER A FATAL ACCIDENT WAS REPORTED IN THE LOCAL NEWS PAPER AND THEN THE LIGHT BULB ON MY HEAD WENT ON BRIGHT. As an epileptic since I was 8 yrs old and taking the dreaded dialantin sodium & phenobarbital has kept me sane and grand mal seizure free. One doctor took all my prescribed meds for 2 weeks-he wanted to see what would happen-well i had a grand mal seizure while on my stationary bike, fell off, bit my tongue and had a severe headach for days and stayed home from work just to get my body back to where it was prior to obeying this Dr. If I could find something but after 70 years I will stick to my apple cider vinegar in V8 or water while it still not hurting but helping my arthritis and osteoporosis. Annnd shiny hair too.

Please stick to your meds until you are truly sure and that your examiner thinks you can go ahead with alternatives. It physically hurts badly to not use the safety first method. I pray for all us epileptics especially the kids. While I was a kid I had to fight the kids for all their ugly remarks that made me cry in anger and then I began to fight them back because this is not my fault. You are all in my prayers."

If I take it 3 times a day, it sometimes keeps me up at night because it raises my energy levels up; instead, I take it 3 times a day only for more control or energy. I'm taking medicine still but at a minimal level because of these additional items I'm taking. Accupuncture helped me as well. I went from the full dosage of regular meds. to half the amount. The accupuncture takes some time though, but is worth it in the end.(The type of acupuncture I used was the approach treating the whole body - not just the ears for example.)"

    QUESTION

[QUESTION]  01/16/2009: Rose from Steedman, MO/USA: "Epilepsy (Ailment)

First I have to say I LOVE THIS SITE! I could spend hours on here and love every minute of it...I get so excited when I see people are finding real help..it is just so exciting! And now I find there's even hope for epilepsy?? This is very near and dear to my heart...my son has epilepsy. I used to worry about epilepsy taking his life, now I worry more about all the medications doing the job instead.

Ted, do you think it would make a difference if the seizures were from a closed head injury? Would the same concepts apply? Nothing tangible ever showed up in any of the tests he's ever had...no obvious visible damage.

It just makes sense though--to promote oxygen to the brain for healing, build up the myelin sheaths, the metal toxicity and the short circuiting that happens. I'm sure my son is being overcome with toxins...he gets horrible boils, in fact I was just telling him about turmeric for this. (Thanks everyone for the turmeric info!!!). And not long ago, he scraped his leg on a ladder and he ended up with a staph infection from it.

He also struggles with short-term memory issues at times, and he's in college now. He tries so hard...even though he has these problems he doesn't give up , he just studies harder and reads things 3 or 4 times.

I'm seeing how his eating/sleeping habits (and Mountain Dews-ugh!) are exacerbating the whole problem. I will be sharing all this with him...and most definitely about the MSG/Aspartame issues."

01/16/2009: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Ted, do you think it would make a difference if the seizures were from a closed head injury?

An injury you need the brain to heal. When a brain is in alkaline state, it does heal. In fact I had one Romanian professor who had astenia as a result of a head injury I think sustained from hitting in the tree during skiing. As a result he had both CFS (chronic fatigue syndrome) and inability to sleep, and a weak epileptic seizures. For me my observations was that the brain didn't heal because he had acid brain. The brain if it is acid, you get sleeplessness. Only when the brain becomes somewhat alkaline, from lower metabolism or irritation or inflammation does the brain begins to heal. The remedy that was used and it worked fantastically well, even from the very first dose, taken 1-2 hours before sleep, using the carbicarb + potassium remedy. The remedy is 1/4 teaspoon of sodium carbonate plus 1/4 teaspoon sodium bicarbonate plus 1/8 teaspoon of potassium bicarbonate (or potassium citrate) in 1/2 glass of water one to two hours before sleep. A state of alkalinity is what is needed for the brain to begin healing, it's a state where oxygen is higher, brain is alkaline and the brain heals, thus reducing the episodic epileptic seizures. Most normal baking soda solo remedy won't alkalize the brain because they get used up before reaching the brain and the brain is very high metabolically speaking. A couple of things worthy of mention that the brain is found in high amounts, besides lecithin, this includes fish oil omega 3 500 mg and taurine supplements, about 1000 mg/ day.

    Would the same concepts apply?

Generally speaking similar concepts would apply but we concentrate on healing aspects of the brain as mentioned in previous paragraph.

Nothing tangible ever showed up in any of the tests he's ever had...no obvious visible damage.

Our present state of medical diagnostic, by my standards at least is too primitive to even see. For example how do I know there is high heavy metals in the brain using standard tests such as x rays. Only if it becomes very serious do they show up. My own tests are much more simpler using a saliva test for heavy metals duing a dithizone dyes which changes color in presences of high heavy metals. Obviously in epileptic seizures, of physical accident, b complex, and magnesium citrate are very helpful too for normal functions since I have found both heavy metals and calcium to be disuptive for brain function, that may lead to epileptic seizures.

It SHOULD be noted that certain meds make the condition worse, and many antibiotics actually increase heavy metal retention, leading to epileptic seizures. A person with a condition such as these I have found a frequent POISON, came mostly from sugarless chewing gums having aspartame often labeled as "xylitol". Always read the package label. This one I have found a person to have a form of epileptic seizure from just sugar less chewing gum, innocently labeled as xylitol, but contains aspartame, which unfortunately degrades to methanol alcohol and formaldehyde in presence of a body enzymes. Tomato has this effect too, but much much less, and I may avoid this too. Softdrinks also contains them and should be avoided. These Soda that Edgar Cayce call a slops, works like this: it depletes the body of bicarbonates. When large amounts of carbonated water in presence of bicarbonate, they will usually degrade to just water and carbon dioxide withouth any buffering capacities left to control the stability of the body's pH. This information is easily verified from how buffering pH capacities work using sodium bicarbonates, or other bicarbonates.

MSG, glutamate, phenylalanine, asparagine are some other things that not mentioned elsewhere that seems to worsen condition. Any amino acids containing excitoxins literally overheat the neural system by unnecessarily exciting them. But there is another way you can unnecessarily excite them: blood sugar spikes through drinking Mountain Dew, for example. When this happens the body tries to normalize the blood sugar by producing more insulin to quickly reduce blood sugar spikes. Because it is so high, the body ends up overproducing insulin resulting in a condition called hypoglycemia and the body ends up with excessive cortisone, which cause the body to excite unnecessary from such a hormone. In short sweet sugary drinks should be avoided otherwise it worsens the epileptic seizures. Switchin to foods with low glycemic index, as in complex carbohydrates is helpful, EXCEPT for potatoes and mushrooms , which are high in mycotoxins and worsen the epileptic seizures, as mycotoxins are produced by fungus found on potatoes as well as potatoes has high levels of calcium, which is not well tolerate by the brain as excess calcium encourage cysts in a few cases and is one my frequent food intolerant lists, that frequently comes up time to time.

I am sure I haven't answered all the questions, but those are the main points.

    Ted

P.S. A very easy cure for MRSA that I have uncovered is the use of milk of magnesia. In the case of one cancer individual that had a severe MRSA or staph, the tumeric didn't work, but the milk of magnesia, mixed with 1% hydrogen peroxide, or just milk of magnesia (8% magnesium hydroxide) worked consistently well."

01/17/2009: Rose from Steedman, MO/USA replies: "Epilepsy (Ailment).

    Followup to Ted's response.

Hi Ted! Thanks so much for your very thorough (and QUICK!) explanation...I like being able to understand the why and how of things, and you explain it so well!

Two things: my son takes a mixture of anticonvulsants...levetiracetam, lamotrigine, topiramate. He (and I) would love for him to eventually be off the medications. They can help hold some of the seizures at by, but they're scary...as they lose their effectiveness, docs either add another drug, replace a drug, and then increase amounts. And the side affects! My gosh, where does this end? My son always feels like the docs just want to hurry him out of the office, they don't listen. Can his liver and brain and body handle all this STUFF. He's a young man, you know? Do they really expect a body to have quality of life all doped up this way for the duration of his life? This truly breaks my heart Ted...to watch him struggle with all the side effects of poor coordination, headaches, clumsiness, confusion, difficulty thinking or talking, etc. I'm sorry, it's just so frustrating.

    Look at this: http://www.efwp.org/programs/side_effects.shtml

The other thing is that my son is a big boy, and weight issue is a battle for him. I was thinking this might matter to you with your suggestions for supplement amounts.

I was summarizing your suggestions (and reading other similar posts), and we have dosage questions for you that follow each item. (thank you)

For alkalinity: Mix 1/4 tsp sodium carbonate, 1/4 tsp sodium bicarbonate, and 1/8 tsp potassium bicarbonate OR potassium citrate, together in half glass of water. 1 to 2 hours before bedtime. QUESTION: Is this the only dose every day? and should this be done only 5x/week, with 2 days off?

Lecithin: You mentioned this. QUESTION: Is 1-2 Tbsp per day the right amount every day?

Fish Oil Omega 3: 3500 mg. QUESTION: Is this every day for awhile?

Taurine: 1000 mg/day every day for awhile.

B Complex: I've read about your recommendations in other posts. QUESTION: Would a B50 twice a day be appropriate?

Magnesium Citrate: QUESTION: would this be 250 mg per day?

How about Sodium ascorbate, 2000-3000mg divided up throughout the day?

As his brain/body begins to heal, no doubt the medications' effects will change and will probably need to be adjusted accordingly. Any thoughts on this, Ted??? Of course, a doctor will remain in the picture.

Thank you so so much. The information you provide is helping us to find a more organic solution to stopping the seizures...trying to fix the things CAUSING the seizures and assist the brain in healing with nutrients it actually recognizes...instead of toying with the brain and getting all doped up.

    Our heartfelt gratitude,
    Rose"

[QUESTION]  01/17/2009: Desiree from Portland, OR replies: "Ted, Have you known other products to be labeled as containing xylitol, but actually containing another sweetner? I was alarmed when I read about the SF chewing gum. I just bought a big bag of xylitol. I hope that is what it really is. Thank you."
01/18/2009: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "As mentioned before the brain's toxicity in handling heavy metals is greatly reduced with magnesium supplements, such as magnesium citrate 500 mg a day. I remember reading the effects of metal toxicity in Brazilian population was much more stronger if the person had a magnesium deficiency then those who are not. The effects of epileptic seizures would reduce. The key apparently how to phase off such an effect that I had seen people being cured by just slowly phasing them out. These medications are often the cause of obesity and adds more to to the problem. The most important requirement is the issue of alkalization which has the largest effect and at the time, some parents were just happy the child actually no longer had any epileptic seizures using such a simple remedy as a lemon and baking soda also. So a lemon and baking soda may also be added too. What I did notice that inspite of all the medication the child had an epileptic seizures once a month. Upon alkalization with medication. that no longer occured, and the parents phased off the medications slowly as the body acquired more and more supplements to replace them.

    As to your questions:

For alkalinity: Mix 1/4 tsp sodium carbonate, 1/4 tsp sodium bicarbonate, and 1/8 tsp potassium bicarbonate OR potassium citrate, together in half glass of water. 1 to 2 hours before bedtime. QUESTION: Is this the only dose every day? and should this be done only 5x/week, with 2 days off?

For a conservative point of view, once a day is fine, and usually it's done 5 or 6 days out of a week with 2 days off. I can't be exact, however a baking soda and lemon may be added during the day is also possible too. That's usually 2 tablespoon of lemon juice plus 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda. The reason why this is mentioned is I had some experience that epileptic seizures was reduced with this also. Lemon becomes citrates and it helps circulation of the brain by normalizing excessive calcium that seems to block circulation of the brain. In more severe instances, cyst appears in the brain because of excessive calcium due to our present dietary practices of eating acid forming foods.

Lecithin: You mentioned this. QUESTION: Is 1-2 Tbsp per day the right amount every day?

That's the average dose and I don't see any problems with this one.

Fish Oil Omega 3: 3500 mg. QUESTION: Is this every day for awhile?

I think for most cases a moderate dose of 500-1500 mg a day for a week, before going to twice a week or three times a week is sufficient. Fish oil I prefer the newest bottle that's just manufactured a month or three months' ago. If it's out in the shelf for 2 years I won't likely use it because oil becomes rancid and becomes somewhat toxic. It's a somewhat unrecognized issue in human dietary health, but it's negative effects is seen often in fish pathology. This is one of the reasons why I don't like to use heat in vegetable oil cookins. Although pure coconut oil in general (never use hydrogenated ones!) resist higher cooking temperatures and are more ideal for the task. To tell if these resist high cooking temperature as a rough guide is whether it hardens in cool temperatures such as 70 degrees or 65 degrees Fahrenheit. It often implies higher resistance, without oxidizing at higher temperatures. Olive oil is another one that, but to a lesser extent then that of coconut oil in resistance to higher cooking temperatures. Vegetable oils works like a "sponge" in acquiring heavy metals off your cooking utensils, full of free radical iron (scientist call them Fenton reaction), nickel, cadmium, lead, etc. That's why I don't like using metallic cooking utensils when a person is on a high heavy metal issues, or have an epilepsy.

Taurine: 1000 mg/day every day for awhile.

Taurine is found in high amounts in the brain. The dose is usually between 1000-4000 mg/day with average minimum dose of 1000 mg. It's ideally taken every day for 5 days out of a week. So it is food for the brain, but the side benefit is it also decreases appetite, and reduce weight.

B Complex: I've read about your recommendations in other posts. QUESTION: Would a B50 twice a day be appropriate?

Usually this depends on a condition. A person with a weight problem may take less such as once a day for a week the perhaps on second week is taken three times a week, then it is further tapered off slowly over during the second month. Taking too much b complex may increase appetite, and hence taking once a day at least for the first week, before taking it ocassionally is a fair rule of thumb. My dose usually reflects the condition of a person. A CFS Chronic Fatigue syndrome needs twice a day, while a person with a weight problem
requires once a day for ONLY the first week then ocassionally after that.

Magnesium Citrate: QUESTION: would this be 250 mg per day?

    I prefer 500 mg a day.

How about Sodium ascorbate, 2000-3000mg divided up throughout the day?

    1000 x 3 or 1500 x 2

As his brain/body begins to heal, no doubt the medications' effects will change and will probably need to be adjusted accordingly. Any thoughts on this, Ted??? Of course, a doctor will remain in the picture.

Yes, usually with improved coordination and concentration and reduced medications will be noticed. Pretty soon, you will find medication is getting in the way of his recovery and this is often the signal for reduced medication.

    Ted"

[YEA]  01/21/2011: Vickthechick from San Francisco, Ca, Usa replies: "Ted of Bangkok you are a *GOD*SEND and I send you all the positive, positive, THANK YOU energy I possibly can. Hey if you ever come to San Francisco, California and need someone to stand there and feed your parking meter with quarters I would gladly do that for you! ALL DAY! It would be a very small price to pay for what your information has done for me!

OK FIRST let me say that there is an awful lot of information about seizures on the internet and I was mind boggled for awhile and had to sort and sift and yes, pray, and try to decide what practically I could and could not do. If you are feeling befuddled too, please be patient. It is well worth it to not have to poison yourself with standard pharmaceutical drugs if you have that option to NOT take them. Our world is toxic enough as it is without adding extra stuff in our bodies. The drug they told me to take for my seizures I researched into the medical literature (meant only for doctors) where they actually ADMITTED they did NOT really understand WHY the drug worked. It just did. Really scientific huh? I FULLY AGREE though that you MUST NOT TAKE RISKS and drive a car if you are NOT taking medication and are not pretty much 100% certain you are cured, etc. ONCE you start taking seizure medication ESPECIALLY you can NOT stop without a risk of non-stop seizures for many of these medications.

OK THAT SAID let me give you my facts straight out about me as simply as possible: Female Age 39

First seizure: 08/13/10 (nocturnal while sleeping -- no foaming no incontinence -- taken immediately to emergency room -- blood and urine tests all came back normal)

Second seizure: 10/10/10 Daytime -- about 10am at a public lecture -- immediately before had been eating hard candies given out at the tables (no aspartame according to the company) and had only had Coffee for breakfast. Blacked out for about twenty minutes. No incontinence no foaming at mouth. All tests at emergency room came back normal but I was prescribed an anti-seizure medicine (don't want to name for fear of corporate backlash).

Later I had an MRI and an EEG and an EKG too and ALL came back normal or "non-epileptic" EXCEPT for a small cyst in my brain that showed up in the MRI. Doctors said this had nothing to do with my seizures and was common but they want to watch it (apparantly a lot of people have them and don't know it until they have an MRI). Scared the crap out of me. I've always believed in vitamins and health food etc. But have been too befuddled and confused to figure out WHAT to do -- lazy you might call me but HEY modern living is complicated enough without filtering everything and doing tiresome WORK WORK WORK related to eating perfectly every day and taking a zillion vitamins.

IRONICALLY I was tired all the time but TOO TIRED to make perfect food and bother to take vitamins which could have made me feel better but who knew? WELL NOW I had a fire under my butt! Life is precious and I didn't want to have it end too soon but I checked out all the online complaints about the side effects of the seizure medicine they told me to take and I felt that I just couldn't do put that pharmaceutical crap in my body.

I got a Chinese Traditional Medicine doctor and started taking his herbs every night but still wasn't sleeping well.

FINALLY I found this site and tried Ted's 2 TABLESPOONS FRESH LEMON JUICE mixed with1/2 teaspoon baking soda washed down with somePomegranate juice right before bedtime last night. I SLEPT BETTER THAN I HAVE IN AGES!!! I can NOT find sodium carbonate for Ted's alkalinity recipe so I'm just going to do the lemon juice/baking soda thing before bed with a 99mg Potassium Citrate capsule.

I'm also taking daily: One Vitamin E 400IU softgel, One Taurine 500mg cap (Ted recommends 1000mg), Soy Lecithin Granules (at least tablespoon per day), One B-12 complex (so that weird baking soda "pill-like thing" experience another person reported hopefully won't happen to me as a side effect of taking baking soda every night! ), 1000 units of Vitamin D DAILY (this vitamin just ROCKS! You would pretty much have to lay out naked for two hours to get it naturally! ) Um. Oh and Vitamin C. How much? Oh I don't know. The only vitamins you really have to be careful about taking too much I have read are Vitamin E and Vitamin A though I know a girl who cured TERRIBLE acne through large doses of NATURAL Vitamin A capsules but I digress.

IN CONCLUSION... BE PATIENT... STUDY AND LEARN AND TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF PEOPLE! I WILL REPORT BACK TO YOU WHEN I GET MY SECOND MRI IN SIX MONTHS AT WHICH POINT I AM PRAYING THAT DAMN BRAIN CYST WILL BE GONE WITH THE WIND! Love and Best Wishes to you ALL"

01/29/2011: Sandhya from Kihei, Hawaii, Usa replies: "Epilepsy....... Check out the sites for brain injury symptoms...... More and more they are finding that whiplash or a blow to the head of some sort can cause epilepsy even up to 10 to 15 years later....... And doctors don't ask about this. Check out brain injury symptoms on a good site and see if they fit. You might be surprised."

[YEA]  01/24/2008: Chris from Lansing, Michigan: "On September 1,2007 I started having grand mal seizures. I continue to have them and my neurologist says I have developed epilepsy. I had no idea that artificial sweeteners would cause neurological disorders. It was a gift from God when my dentist found out about my seizures and steered me to this information. Doctors want to cover up the symptoms with medication that is actually worse than the symptoms themselves. I am going to stop all foods with aspertaime and I know I will feel better and my seizures will stop. I had funny feelings for months that were gradually getting worse and I was still putting the poison in my body. The feelings slowly got worse to the point of not being able to speak which led to the grand mal seizure. I was poisoning myself and didn't even know it. Thank you so much for this life saving information. I am going to use Stevia and pass this information to all I know. Has anyone developed siezures since using aspertaine?"

01/26/2008: Joyce from Joelton, Tn. replies: "To Chris from Lansing, Michigan, 1/24/08 Chris, you will find the answer to your question by googling "Excitotoxins" If you want to go even deeper in this subject, buy or get a copy from your library, 2 books: The first one is easier for the layman to understand and is written by Rachel & Richard Heller & Dr. Vagnnini, a cardiologist. The title is "The Carbohydrate Addict's Healthy Heart Program: Break Your Carbo-Insulin Connection to Heart Diseasebook".

the second one is written by neurosurgeon Russell Blaylock. Its title is "Excitotoxins: The Taste That Killsbook link".

The first book is written on what monosodium glutamate and aspartame do to the body, which starts with making it kick out excess insulin and ends up with Diabetes Mellitus type 2 with all its complications.

The second book is written on what the excitotoxins do to our brains and central nervous system. Which is excites the cells to death, which is how they got the name of excitotoxins. Fortunately the major excitotoxins that you are likely to find in your food is the same as in the first book- MSG and aspartame. Unfortunately most people do not know that our foods are heavily loaded with these two brain killers because they are hidden under other names such as natural flavors, spices (not named), natural flavorings and many others. It is hard to find a commercial salad dressing, Ketchup, sauces, sausage, etc. without them. Glad you discovered what was causing it before total destruction occurred"

11/05/2011: Jody23 from Fort Worth, Tx replies: "I heard that Pfizer added Aspartame to the seziure drug Dilantin, when they changed the look of the capsule back in 2007. There is no proof that Pfizer added Aspartame to Dilantin, but why are some people having seizures who have not had a seizure in 5-10 years while taking the "old Dilantin"(Parke Davis 100mg kapseals). I called Pfizer and asked them if the formula had been changed. They said the look of the capsule was changed, but not the formula. I think something was changed, but Pfizer wasn't going to tell me."

09/23/2010: Tom from Regina, Sk replies: "Ola:

Since you had NOT had epilepsy all your life up to age 20, why did the doctors not then suspect an external cause such as a parasite, toxin, heavy metal exposure, etc.?

The toxin could be anything, from solvents or cleaners used around the home, to mold neurotoxins released from moldy carpets or a wet wall in or near the bathroom, etc. This stinks of gross incompetence. Please try to remember where and when you were up to several months before your first attack! Your home, workplace, diet, any pets (they unfortunately bring in all manner of parasites). Did you try basic and extremely important things first like ensuring it wasn't aspartame, or a bad diet?

Parasites cause electrolyte imbalances AND release strong neurotoxins, both of which can generate attacks.

Did you first try Ted's basics like taking extra magnesium, at the link to Epilepsy on this site here?:

Please see the table of contents here, where P. 230 says "SEIZURES".

You can read this item for free, no signup or fee or registering or anything. Look to where it says "230" at the page bottom, NOT from entering "230" in the page box above the window! Here's what it says:

Seizures are always caused by tiny Ascaris larvae in the brain. I suppose they find their way to the seizure center by accident. It is not normal for them to be in the brain, they typically travel between the stomach and lungs. Ascaris eggs are present everywhere in animal filth. Dogs, cats, horses and pigs all get Ascaris. Their excrement dries and flies about in the dust, but mostly it resides in the soil. Children playing in the dirt cannot help but pick up Ascaris eggs. The eggs hatch in the stomach
and the tiny larvae, microscopic in size, travel first to the lungs. Here they go through a molt. This causes some coughing. Whenever a child coughs for part of the day do not assume it is harmless. Use a frequency generator set to 408 KHz, or use a zapper. Children should be treated for Ascaris anyway, whether coughing or not, once a week. The tiny larvae are in the cough up. (Ascaris is a parasitic nematode worm that lives in the small intestine, but it goes through all its life stages in the body. )

But obviously you must get a further professional opinion there. Do they have naturopaths, homeopaths, alternative health practitioners there, one who can look into this part?

Meanwhile, as you say if that device is doing nothing, why not get them to pull the battery or remove it entirely?"

09/29/2010: Rachael from Naples, Fl replies: ""Seizures are always caused by tiny Ascaris larvae in the brain."

This is a theory by a few doctors that has not be proven by any wide scale research. It is dangerous to make statements of "Fact" which have not been researched."
01/23/2011: Vickthechick from San Francisco, Ca, Usa replies: "As any scientist will tell you it is important to have an open mind. What is "unproven" one year can become "commonly accepted truth" the next. For example, recently it has FINALLY been realized and accepted by the medical community that Vitamin D is necessary in much greater amounts then previously realized.

Now as for this statement that seizures are caused by a parasite found in animal feces, this has possible truths in my case at least. I have a very old dog I have been taking care of who unfortunately poops in her bedding and I have to shake it out all the time and wash it. I commonly have a very small cough too. I suppose it IS possible for there to be more than one reason for seizures and to have a cure listed here work for more than one reason! I would definitely try the epsom-salt-before-bedtime (1/2 teaspoon in orange juice) or 1/2 tsp baking soda in 2 tbls. Lemon juice before bedtime. I am getting good sleep like never before with the lemon juice and baking soda and no seizure so far but am not sure about combining the two in one night (that's a lot of sodium! ) It is necessarily a trial and error thing to try folk remedies you must be patient and very careful too."

11/24/2011: Peggy from To, On replies: "I am happy for you no seizures, how do you do lately? My daughter has seizure when was 7, now 15, I really want to try."

    BETTER BUT NOT CURED

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  08/07/2011: Suzanne from Abbotsford, Bc: "I know someone who has had epilepsy since he was a young teen and has been on phenobarbitol for years. Most of the time it was controlled, but occasionally he would have a grand mal seizure and more often, petit mal seizures, particularly in the morning. However, my sister-in-law told me that in Africa where they lived for a number of years, there were many cases of epilepsy in an area that was zinc-deficient, so I suggested he start taking zinc. Since taking 25 mg of zinc (1/2 a tablet) every night, he hasn't had any trouble, except once when he was taking another brand of zinc. I don't know if I can mention the store, but the good brand was from SuperStore and the other was from an online vitamin place."
