BETTER BUT NOT CURED

[YEA]  05/31/2008: WT from Spartanburg, SC writes: "I read somewhere that Epsom salt baths would cure eczema. My secretary has a friend who has a kid who suffers with it really bad, to the point he doesn't sleep well because of it. After I mentioned it to her, the friend tried it and she was floored with the results. It began clearing up very quickly and he has been sleeping very well lately. Another friend tried it with great results. People are simply amazed at the results."

10/18/2010: Elaine from Dallas, Texas writes: "Eczema probably stems from a variety of reasons, and I think one of those reasons is TAPE WORMS. Many people have them and don't even know it, so I believe if you get rid of the tape worm, your skin will clear up. I have not tried ACV for eczema, but I take fish oil pills and they work just fine. It's not a cure but it remedies the problem until I stop taking the pills for a while. I had eczema since 22 and I am 33 now. Hope this helps."

I take a spoon full daily and it either completely heals my skin or dramatically reduces the amount of eczema as well as the redness, bumps, itchiness, etc... As a side note, Fish oil is also good for your hair and nails as well."

FISH OIL, YOGURT

[YEA]  09/16/2011: Liz from Boston, Massachusetts writes: "My eighteen year old daughter has struggled with eczema outbreaks almost non-stop since she was just a wee thing. Her arms were broken out so badly that she would actually wear long sleeves on hot, summer days because she was embarrassed.

In addition to steroid creams prescribed by her dermatologist, we have tried every product (and combination of products) known to man for over a decade - special soaps, lotions, creams - you name it, we've tried it. None of it worked. At best, it offered a bit of calming, but the large patches of skin eruptions remained.

In my determination to rid her, or even just ease her of this troublesome and embarrassing affliction, I continued to research and continued to try different methods.

I am beyond excited to report that I found a combination that actually works! It has been over a month and her skin has never looked better! She is blissfully happy, and I am so happy for her.

Deep down, I always felt that treatment from the inside-out would be most effective. In my research travels, I came across an article suggesting exactly that - that "good health begins in the gut" and cited eczema as one of the ailments that could be "cured" with probiotics.

I bought some quality probiotics but after a month, we didn't see any improvement. For the heck of it, I had her eat a small container of vanilla yogurt every day and I had her take a fish oil capsule with her breakfast and again before bed. The combination worked! :) I can't believe it. After all these years, all of the remedies tried, not to mention, the thousands of dollars spent - yogurt and fish oil every day did the trick and she is finally free of it!

She joked that I should win the Nobel Prize for curing eczema (hahaha). :) I'm not sure it would be a cure for everyone, but given my daughters amazing results, it is absolutely something you should try. I hope your results are equally amazing."

[BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS]  05/10/2010: Mariana from Billings, Mt writes: "Hello,

I just wanted to write and let you know what I used to cure my eczema. I developed an allergy-induced eczema on my legs when I started trying to eat dairy again (I knew I had been allergic before but thought I might have grown out of it). I quit eating the dairy after a few months, after developing a nasty case of eczema. It cleared up somewhat, but never completely went away for almost four years. It was especially bad on my inner thighs, and I would scratch it at night and it would bleed and get sores. I had to go on very strong steroids and antibiotics for it several times.

Then, this year I bought some cinnamon flavored flax oil (COLD PRESSED), at the health food store in the refrigerator section. I started taking 1 or 2 tablespoons a day. Usually I would take one in the morning and another at night. I noticed after about a week that my eczema was looking and feeling much smoother, and by the end of three weeks it was COMPLETELY gone. I couldn't believe it, and I couldn't believe I had suffered with it so long when the remedy was so easy.

I continued to take the flax oil for a few months, but I noticed it also had a side effect for me. I am a 26-year-old female and, the flax oil at that dose made my periods come much closer together, sometimes only two weeks apart. So I stopped taking the flax oil, and they went back to normal.

Now I am taking canola oil and another oil mix that is high in omega-3 acids, and the eczema has not returned. I think it was the high dose of omega 3-s that cured me, but maybe it was also something specific to the flax oil? I always ate quite a bit of fish, and that didn't seem to help any (which is also high in omega 3's). Anyway, if I start having any problems with eczema again I will know what to do. An extra monthly cycle or two is definitely worth clearing have clear eczema-free skin!!!!"

05/10/2010: Tom from Regina, Sk replies: "Mariana:

Likely you had a physical reaction to the lignans in the flax oil. They are obviously oil-soluble and not removed if the oil is just plain cold pressed and filtered, not extracted 'pure' with a solvent like hexane as are lots of commercial bulk name brand oils.

http://www.flaxlignaninfo.com/about-flax-lignans-p1948-en.html

Flax lignans are phytonutrients found in unrefined grains, legumes, certain vegetables and seeds. Flax is the richest source of lignans, providing 75 - 800 times more lignans than most other plant sources. Lignans have numerous biological properties. They are phytoestrogens, or naturally occurring plant estrogens, that can have a balancing effect on hormones. Lignans also exhibit strong antioxidant activities.

Just one possibility is that excessive sensitivity to estrogen(s), including phytoestrogens, could be because the estrogen binding sites have similar action to both iodine and estrogen, and if there's a dire shortage of Iodine in the western diet as many claim, then that receptor site is freed up to bind estrogen.

http://www.scribd.com/doc/1959949/IODINE-Solution-to-Healthproblems"
05/13/2010: Mariana from Billings, Mt replies: "Thank you very much for your response and that info, Tom. I didn't know that about the lignans in flax oil, and that they can actually act like estrogen in the body (that is true of ALL lignans, correct?). I am wondering if I took a lower dose of the flax oil if it would not have the same side effects. Two tablespoons a day probably contains ALOT of lignans, so a lot of estrogen.

The iodine info is also very interesting - I especially found the info about the Asian diet useful, and how consuming a daily intake of seaweed (high in iodine) decreased estrogen levels and increases progesterone so greatly. Here is is the text from the case study:

Seaweed and Estrogen Levels

Case study: 3 subjects with abnormal menstrual cycles (<28 days)

Given bladderwrack (brown seaweed, high in iodine) in doses consumed by mainland Japanese

Within 3 months, all subjects had longer menstrual cycles and less bleeding

Increased progesterone levels 2,900%

Decreased estrogen levels 676%

It seems like this type of information could be useful in many other applications as well - hormone balancing seems to be a major issue for many of us. I have always had VERY painful and long periods, and I always (and always have) craved a lot of salt, and I will often stop by the salt shaker and just put some on my hand and eat it (my mom and brothers and sisters think it is so weird). But maybe I actually need more iodine in my diet. I have started taking blackstrap molasses and that has helped TREMENDOUSLY (periods shorter and much less painful), but I still have to take a painkiller or I can't function. I recently started taking multi-vitamins again (I used to take them religiously as a teenager but got out of the habit in my 20's). I just checked them and they do contain the RDA of iodine, so maybe that will be enough. Although, according to the website you gave me, perhaps not. I think I will go look for bladderwrack, kelp, or iodine supplement at the healthfood store (I personally think I like the idea of the natural sources better than the inorganic ones). I wonder if this information could also be of use to my sister, who is having problems getting pregnant (she tested as having the opposite problem that I seem to have, too much progesterone and too little estrogen - and her menstrual cycles are often 2-3 months apart) - but maybe iodine can have a balancing effect in either case? Anyway, sorry this message got off-topic, but it is amazing all of the effects that simple foods and natural remedies can have on us!"

04/03/2011: Dee from Nyc, Ny writes: "Every description I have read of eczema is "dry, rashy skin."

My grandson was diagnosed with it at a few months old (he is now 2 1/2 years old). He has had allergy tests for the normal things (everything he eats), with nothing coming back positive. His symptoms are red, itchy bumps (NOT dry, rashy skin) on the palms of his hands and also his feet. He was on zyrtec for more that a year and a half before my daughter decided to stop because she figured this constant chemical ingestion cannot be good for him. It did help while he was taking it, but if she stopped a dose for 1 day, the bumps came back. He still gets these bumps.

Any suggestions or experience with this? Thanks for any input."

[YEA]  07/15/2011: Waterfallbutterfly from Minneapolis, Mn, Usa replies: "Lana,

Did you ever find a remedy for these itchy bumps? I know this has been a long time coming - but I had the same itchy bumps on my stomach (mostly) and it was terrible, but I found a cure that fixed it and is working wonders on my dyshidrotic eczema, dry feet, cracked heels, and thick, dry, itchy skin)! The first thing that helped was switching from my soap (Dr. Bronner's) to Aveeno oatmeal bar soap. That helped the bumps to go away some, but I still had lots of lingering problems. After reading through this website and combining some info from other users, I came up with this:

Mix 1/4 tsp baking soda with 1/4 tsp unfiltered, unpasteurized, apple cider vinegar with mother in a bowl until it stops fizzing - mix to make sure baking soda dissolves. Add a few ounces of water to the mix. Take a thin washcloth (I use a cloth baby wipe, but I know most people probably don't have those) and soak it in the liquid. Rub all over your body - focusing more attention on the itchy, dry, or problem areas, rewetting the cloth as needed to make sure you're getting plenty on your skin. (Note: I don't like the smell of it, but it dissipates quickly - I certainly don't smell like vinegar all day. ) Then I rub my skin down with extra virgin organic coconut oil. The EVOCO didn't seem to absorb until I wiped down with this concoction first. I put socks on my feet immediately - mostly to keep the oil off the carpet (but maybe it's been helping my feet - so I thought I'd add that. I had terribly dry feet with horribly cracked heels - this is fixing that too.)

I've also been eating a spoonful of the EVOCO each day and drinking a tsp of the Apple Cider Vinegar in a glass of water as well.

I've heard that mixing the EVOCO with some beeswax can help it stick around on your skin longer (a more lotiony feel), but I don't have any yet and it works without it. I will be trying it soon though.

My skin is so soft and comfortable to be in (it has been years, if ever, since I've been able to say I have smooth, soft skin) - it's amazing and it has only taken me a few days to get almost 100% better! I can't wait to see what else it can do. I hope this helps you and anybody else reading!"

12/28/2008: Linda from West Newfield, Maine writes: "RE: metal contamination...I haven't attempted a detox...I have eczema, so the docs have told me. Sometimes the itch is to the point where I could scratch the skin off my hands and fingers...often, I try to just rub my hands together to alleviate the itch and quite often this results in a strong odor on my hands - as if I've been handling coins. Would this appear to be indication of metal overload? I take levothyroxine for a radio-iodine-fried thyroid...drink lots of coffee and have recently given up the flouride toothpaste; gave up the aluminum deoderant a month or two ago...thanks for all feedback.

[YEA]  12/29/2008: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Handling coins can result in a couple of contamination that has been known to cause irritation of the skin and metals does get absorbed through the skin, but much more so in handling of coins compared to taking showers, as the metal concentration on handling coins are much higher, and the oils on the skin makes it an ideal carrier for metal absorption. Interestingly, for some reason or another, virus also exists in handling paper money which develops skin eruption immediately. The other issue is the unknown pathogens that exist on metal coin, in particular, certain funguses, that seem to thrive in certain metals. I haven't found which kinds of metallic coins are responsible, but there is a presence of certain fungus that may also lead to eczema. The only known remedy I used to chelate out heavy metals, externally, is either the tetrasodium EDTA or the disodium EDTA, to be used as a soap after counting coins. So the use of EDTA solution helps prevent accumulation of them by their chelation.

However, the most frequently encountered eczema from handling coins are fungus and mycoplasma, that causes skin eczema and irriation. There is a couple of remedies that can be tried, one is plain distilled vinegar, soaking the hands for a couple of minutes. This is a mild remedy. If that doesn't work, another possible remedy is a saturated borax solution and if possible the addtion of either ammonium chloride, or ammonium bicarbonate is mixed into the solution helps, of equal amount in a water solution. The strongest of the remedy is either a sodium chlorite 25% concentration, adding several drops of that in a cup of water with a tablespoon of vinegar is one possibility. However, an alternative is also possible, which means a Clorox one cap, per cup for the skin also helps. Some person actually were so desperate the use full undiluted Clorox solution to stop the itchiness. Although I believe this to be too strong and reduces the body's iodine by displacement and make the body more vulnerable to diseases as it tends to suppress the immune functions of both the thymus and the thyroid by chlorine displacing iodine. In any event this issue is also the same if a person happens to be using the MMS (sodium chlorite 28%) with a citric acid. They work similarly, but it's long term use I have found was a goiter or a hypothyroid problem. This can be lessened with a supplements of an iodine solution. One other possibility is the use of Lugol's iodine applied to the area of eczema.

Of course I am always assuming this organism to be of fungal orgins, as a result, I sometimes used a 1.5% hydrogen peroxide mixed with equal amounts of vinegar. This becomes peracetic acid. This is also fairly effective in neutralizing the fungus/mycoplasma caused eczema too. It is soaked in the hands for a couple of minutes, or less, if it becomes somewhat of an irritant, then the hand is removed, and rinsed thoroughly. In the long run, it's best to handle coins with a latex glove, although unconfortable sometimes it won't cause new infections. But that's assuming of course the skin's no longer infected. If it was to be infected, and the use of latex this would inevitably make it worse because the moisture on the hand would feed the fungus. Hence, rinsing the skin with fungus with vinegar for example, before latex glove use may lessen the problem.

It should be noted that eczema skin problem is the most frequently encountered problems for me and as a result, I have devised many formulation. One recent one, which is my favorite, but there is a big downside to cause the skin to be temporarily blue, but can be easily removed with a dishwasher liquid. For some reason or another, the soap seems to encourage fungus growth, but not dishwasher liquid, perhaps the sodium lauryl sulfate, but I can't be certain as I haven't tested this. Anyway the solution I am using is the methylene blue 0.1% concentration, applied to the skin. It stops eczema invariably within 5 minutes because of it's antifungal properties.

Taking sodium ascorbate vitamin C, and a carbicarb remedy is the other ones that reduce overall eczema issue, but is non localized, so its effectiveness here is limited.

A very agressive form of eczema, I may resort to a stronger means, such as a 2.5% - 5% copper chloride solution applied to the skin for 1 minute before rinse. Some of my friends liked it so much they refused to rinse it, but I prefer to rinse it. In event someone don't like to rinse, a lower concentration such as 2.0% - 2.5% is a preferred one since it causes less skin irritation.

If there is anything I haven't quite covered, but is also unlikely is the MRSA, which can easily be neutralized with a milk of magnesia 8% solution. The reason why I know it to work, besides my own experience is in microbiology it is well known that staphyloccous can't survive in pH of above 9 and the milk of magnesia solution is between 9-10, as well as these MRSA have a weakness in presence of magnesium. However MRSA don't cause itchiness. Other forms of bacteria is a possibility and causes itch too, so milk of magnesia is an old standby if none of the above works. However, they all work, but how thoroughly they kill them, varies.

Ted"

BETTER BUT NOT CURED

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  05/21/2011: J from Scottsdale, Az writes: "I have been suffering from Dyshidrotic (hand) eczema for the past 5 months. Before I did this treatment it was severe (oozing, crusting, itchy, red, cracking skin). When I went to the dermatologist, he wanted to prescribe me a cortisone ointment. I told him that for personal health reasons, I don't want to use it and would like to do something more natural. So he suggested I soak my hands twice per day for 5-10 minutes in a solution of 1 tbsp of glycerin, 1 tbsp of apple cider vinegar and a quart of distilled water. After the soak, he said to apply a zinc oxide ointment (which I found in the diaper cream section; I use Triple Paste Medicated Ointment).

I have been doing this for the past couple of months and my hand eczema has improved dramatically. It is not gone, but it is a lot better. I also wear cotton gloves with vinyl gloves over them, secured with a rubber band, every time I shower, wash dishes etc. I don't really have to use the zinc oxide ointment much now, I use it as needed when the eczema is severe. Now, after the soaks, I apply Theraplex moisturizing cream. It works really well and doesn't have any chemicals or preservatives in it. Oh, and I only use fragrance free and preservative free soap. I hope this helps someone!"

HOMEMADE CREAM

[YEA]  05/01/2011: Helen from Vancouver, B.c., Canada writes: "My husband used to have dry skin issues during winter months while we lived in the middle east, although it was visible as very small patches on his elbow and ankle that could be easily treated using QV cream mostly and corticosteroid rarely. Dermatologists diagnosed it to be psoriasis. After we moved in to Canada a year ago, he developed extreme dry skin 2 months ago which covered his arms, legs (from the knee down), trunk (both front and back). The GP diagnosed it to be psoriasis whereas the Dermatologist said it was eczema. Both of them prescribed corticosteroids.

As we knew of the side effects of using these creams over large areas of the body, we refrained from using them completely although the situation was very bad. I developed a cream using natural ingredients that was so effective, it has brought about a major turn around and now, am so glad to say, his skin has recovered completely and is back to being normal in every sense of the word. I would like to share this recipe along with the protocol he followed with all other sufferers of this condition with a sincere wish that it will be just as effective for you and help you lead a normal life as I can totally empathise with this, having seen my husband go through all the pain and agony of having eczema.

- one 450g tub Wellskin Glaxal Base moisturizing cream (for sensitive skin)

[I used this cream as the base for preparing the cream]

- 100% Aloe Vera gel (edible variety)
- Extra virgin olive oil
- vegetable glycerine (100% pure)
- Neem oil
- Calendula oil
- Tea tree oil
- Vitamin E oil (40, 000 I. U. )
- Evening primrose oil softgels - 500 mg (GLA 50mg)

Except for the cream base, I got all the other ingredients from wholefoods market.

To half the cream base, I added about 1/4th cup aloe vera gel, 1/4 to 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil, 1/4 to 1/2 cup glycerine, about 2 tblsp vitamin E oil, around 20-30 drops each of neem oil, calendula oil and tea tree oil and squeezed in about 10 evening primrose softgel cap contents. Mix thorougly and store in a clean jar in a cool, dry place.

To use, apply generous amount of this cream to the affected areas of skin like a face mask and leave on for 1 to 3 hours, if u can. By this time, most of the cream would have been absorbed. Either dab off the excess or leave on over night. Please do not cover with plastic wraps as it can result in further inflammations. Apply morning after shower like regular moisturizer and more intensively in the evening ( as mentioned above) an hour to three hours before going to bed. The key here is to let the cream sit for 2-3 hrs in the evening and atleast 1/2 to 1 hour in the morning. Within 2-3 days , we noticed a dramatic change in the skin condition and on the fourth day, his skin had completly recovered!!

At the same time, my husband stopped using soaps of any kind and used only cetaphil. As for diet, we decided to have only fish, vegetables ( no tomatoes, potatoes), wholegrain brown rice and a berry smoothie using organic unsweetened coconut milk for breakfast (no eggs). Avoid sugar and all simple carbs atleast for the duration of this treatment. And drink loads of water too.

Wishing all of you a speedy recovery, one that's free of medications and all its unwanted side effects."

- Vitamin E

He also takes olive leaf extract and a digestive enzyme supplement (the contents of one of each are mixed with a cup of water and taken with dinner)."

Our current remedy which does work on the spliting of the skin is either a bandage or plaster with a small amount of pure honey next day the spliting has healed and most of the soreness gone. She had been taking antibiotics for quite some time but nothing had stopped the itching. Immediately after applying the honey the itching was gone. Now we'll just have to see if it heals it completely."

I am going to use this remedy at least three time a week, but I will add some oil to it."

BETTER BUT NOT CURED

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  04/29/2009: Susie from Austin, Texas writes: "Has anyone tried Iodine as an eczema cure? I've been painting it on the skin in the affected areas and it seems to be helping. Now I'm going to try taking some iodine tablets. Iodine deficiency is apparently becoming a problem and can be one of the causes of eczema."

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  02/23/2009: Gwen from Toronto, Ontario, Canada writes: "I have been suffering through a 16month eczema outbreak. Nothing has worked for long. I have tried every natural remedy under the sun. Spent a fortune on creams that don't work. Only relief I had was in France during the summer - very hot, & sunny. I've been gluten free for 3 months (worked last time I had eczema, but no relief this time, so far). I may be sharing this prematurely, and maybe it won't last, but I've been itch free for almost 24hrs! The itch has driven me mad - and I have done lots of damage to my skin because of itching. To be itch free for even a day is heaven. I've been researching iodine & eczema. Bought the 10% povidone iodine at the drug store applied as directed and hardly an itch since. One site said to put vitamin E oil on top of the iodine, which I did after the 3rd application of iodine. It is suggested that you apply it 2X a day. Even put it on my face this morning and the itch stopped. There is a decolourized iodine, which I couldn't find - the iodine will stain clothes when wet, but dries in 10 seconds and then no staining. Can't hurt to try & inexpensive too. Nothing else has relieved the itch as well - with no itch maybe my skin will begin to heal? Good luck."

[YEA]  11/27/2008: Lisa from Coto de Caza, Ca writes: "Paint on povidone iodine twice daily on eczema patches. Worked on my 3 year and it's cheaper than the prescription drugs. Don't use iodine tincture since it has alcohol and will sting...especially for young child who scratches the eczema until it bleeds. Since the iodine stains clothes, I put large bandaids over the areas on his legs and arms."

[YEA]  04/23/2008: Debbie from Philadelphia, PA writes: "Hi there, I've suffered from mild to severe eczema for decades. Lately, it has gotten worse with my hands openly bleeding. A month ago, I started taking Iodoral tablets (iodine-potassium) because i was told it's good for my hypothyroid condition. But a surprising thing happened! My hands got a lot better within days! I don't know if it's the iodoral for sure, but that was the only new thing I introduced into my body then. Anyway, I hope this helps someone."
