[NAY]  12/05/2006: Melissa from Machesney Park, IL writes: "I used fresh garlic dropped in ear as another person had said that she did for her son. to get rid of the pain. I tried this on my boyfriend to try and get rid of his earache and infection. It immediately made his ear burn like it was on fire. Why, I am not sure. All I know is it caused him more pain then before. I DO NOT recommend this to anyone!!!!!! I felt so bad for him."

[NAY]  04/01/2007: Jinc's from Greenville, SC replies: "Thank you Melissa from Machesney Park, IL . . . I tried the garlic cure after getting an ear infection. I was glad to have read your warning about your boyfriend's ear burning badly. Your description of "like fire," was accurate. I did a little research and below is what Wikipedia had to say about allicin . . .

"Allicin is a powerful antibiotic and anti-fungal compound obtained from garlic.

Allicin is not present in garlic in its natural state. When garlic is chopped or otherwise damaged, [squeezed] the enzyme alliinase acts on the chemical alliin converting it into allicin. Alliin is an amino acid that does not build proteins.

Allicin is not a very stable compound. It degrades slowly upon standing and is rapidly destroyed by cooking. Allicin can be used for some medicinal purposes - it helps fighting arteriosclerosis, it has the ability to dissolve fats and it can also be used as an antioxidant to some extent.

Allicin is also the chemical constituent primarily responsible for the hot, burning flavor of fresh garlic."

Please note that alicin is described as the agent that causes the hot burning sensation when you eat raw garlic. Probably does the same thing when you put raw fresh garlic in your ear.

I put raw garlic in a thin meshed gauze and after squeezing the juice into my ear. I then pushed the gauze (with garlic still in it) into my ear. I let it stay until I couldn't take the burning anymore.

Although the burning is great, I will try to endure to see if my ear gets better now that I have some idea of why it happens. I only tried it today (1 April 07). Will let everyone know the outcome in about a week. Wanted to let you know about the burning now!

Note: Wikipedia is an open source, free, web encyclopedia. I happen to trust it greatly, although some suspect it because ANYONE can add a definition."

[YEA]  03/30/2006: Barbara from Dunwoody, GA writes: "I use fresh garlic as an antibiotic for earache and sinus infection. The antibiotic properties of garlic are a direct result of the allicin produced from raw, crushed garlic. This is destroyed by age and cooking - cooked garlic has virtually no antibiotic value. I crushed a fresh garlic clove, placed it in a handkerchief and squeezed a couple of drops in my son's ear, he was asleep in minutes with no pain in the morning. I've also sauteed noodles in olive oil & sprinkled fresh crushed garlic on it to address sinus problems."

GARLIC AND HYDROGEN PEROXIDE, ALCOHOL

[YEA]  06/03/2011: Holly from O'fallon, Mo writes: "This works! I have five kids and have dealt with numerous earaches. Chop one tooth of the garlic clove and place on a cotton ball or pad. Wrap cotton around garlic and set in a bowl. Pour peroxide or rubbing alcohol over cotton ball and let sit for a minute or two. Drop 3 or 4 drops into ear and let sit for 2 minutes. Place a dry cotton ball in ear and tilt head or lay down (on the earache side) and let drain. If using peroxide wait until bubbling stops (a few minutes). Peroxide will clean out any wax or build up in the ear. Alcohol seems to evaporate quickly and aids in draining. (But chose one ore the other, not both at the same time! )
My mom always used a washcloth filled with warm salt as pain relief for earaches. Warm 1/4 cup table salt in pan on low heat until salt is warm to the touch. Pour into center of washcloth. Bring sides of washcloth up and wrap a rubber band just above pile of salt. Place on ear until it cools(it usually lasts about 15/20 min). This heat brings great relief and is safer/easier than a heating pad (great for middle of the night! ) Be careful not to get salt too hot, it can burn the thin skin around your ear."

[YEA]  07/22/2008: Robin from Ladera Ranch, CA writes: "I was told if my son was breastfed he would have a stronger immune system. Now I wonder what time of immune system he would of had if I didn't breastfeed him! He had constant ear infections from the time he was 4 months old until about 6 years old. He was on numerous bouts of antibiotics, sometimes both ears twice a month!!! I spent soooo much money on doctors appts and antibiotic prescriptions. His immune system got worse from what I think are the vast amounts of antibiotics. Finally, a guy at work told me to go to this natural store. I went and a man came out and sold me a bottle of ear oil (mostly garlic oil with a couple of other things) for 2 dollars. I brought it home, tried it when my son had an infection and I was BLOWN AWAY!!! About 2 days worth and it was gone. What's amazing is, it came back once or twice after that for about the first year and he hasn't had one since. I wish someone would have told me sooner!!!! Yeah he smelled like garlic and he was mad about that but no more expensive trips to the doctor and these crazy amounts of antibiotics. I've seen these bottles of ear oil since then and given them to my friends with kids and they said it worked for them too and they were amazed. The sell them at like whole foods and trader joes. Doesn't hurt to try right?"

A few weeks ago, my 4 yr old son was very lethargic and his ear was bright red and burning. He said it hurt. My husband chopped up one clove of fresh garlic, put it in maybe a couple table spoons of olive oil in a small cup and warmed it up in the microwave. He strained the garlic out, let it cool and put a dropperful in my son's affected ear. I gave my son some painkiller and a cold compress and he fell asleep for the night. By morning, he was fine!"

[YEA]  06/10/2009: Lanayanie from Santa Rosa Beach, FL writes: "When my son was 4, he had a recurring ear infection. Antibiotics did not help, and I was very frustrated. It seemed like a vicious cycle. Finally, I stopped taking him to a doctor (and stopped the antibiotic round). Instead, I would put a small piece of cotton ball dipped into garlic oil or mullein oil into his ear before bed time. Both are supposed to work well for this. (Mullein is an old native-American remedy for ear ache.) I also gave him high doses of vitamin C, garlic, echinacea, and golden seal (in liquid) mixed with his juice several times a day. Once he recovered, the problem did not come back."

GARLIC, HERBAL TINCTURE

[YEA]  04/17/2010: Tessa from Vancouver, Bc writes: "For Ear Infections i really recommend a liquid ear oil tincture. Although, this is not an 'in your cupboard' remedy, it is all natural, inexpensive (~$15), and I found *instantly* effective.

I experienced a severe double-ear infection about 2 years ago. The pain was so excruciating i couldn't drive, see clearly, and wasn't sure whether i was going to throw up or faint while i was in the health food store seeking advice.

Anyways, the Ear Oil recommended to me, took the pain away in an instant.
I followed the label and had 4 drops put in each ear, and stuffed some cotton in.
The pain did completely subside after the initial dose, however, i did repeat a few more times over the next day or so. Otherwise, the infections were completely gone.
The only downside-the garlic smell was a bit overwhelming to me.

Im sure there are many variations, so i cant vouch for them all, and understandably names can't be mentioned.
If it helps however, this is what mine contains:

*Garlic (Alium sativum)
*St Johns Wort oil (Hypericum perforatum)
*Mullein Oils (Verbascum thapsus)
*with essential oil of Tea Tree (Melalleuca alternifolia)
(in a base of alcohol, distilled water)"

HAND ON EAR METHOD

[YEA]  03/13/2009: Gean from Salina, KS writes: "At the very first sign of ear pain, put your hand over your ear for a few minutes, warming your ear. If your hair is long enough, pull some hair over your ear and cover with warm hand. Keep it there until pain goes away. If you have access to a hat or head band, cover ears to keep warm. If very bad you can cup both hands and make a "tunnel" from your mouth to your ear, blowing warm air. The key is not to wait at all, but do it at the first sign of pain. You can do this wherever you happen to be, and can save you lots of trouble. I've told my kids to do this, and no one in the family has had ear pain for many, many years. If time has gone by and you've had the ear pain for hours, then you may need a heated salt bag or some of the other treatments, although it wouldn't hurt to try the above. But, remember for the next time that a stitch in time saves nine."

HONEY

[YEA]  03/26/2009: Siafu from Three, GA writes: "My son developed an earache the other night and I was about to warm up some oil, but then had another idea; honey - locally procured of course.

I went ahead and used a dropper to place two drops into the affected ear and literally within seconds he went quiet and pulled the covers over his head. I was talking to my wife about what else we could do when I noticed he was not squirming under the covers. I pulled the covers back to reveal a wonderful sleeping little boy with no more pain. Altogether this took probably a minute or less.

This lasted all night and well into the next day until the afternoon when it happened again, but not as severe. Keep in mind that when it began he was kicking and grabbing his ear, not wanting me to touch it or do anything.

My wife took him to a doctor who said his ear was infected.

I have not had to try it again, but next time I'll be sure to reach for the honey. I hope this can be of use to someone, especially the little ones.

I don't know what warnings to give about honey but be sure to research it before giving it to your child or anyone, even in the ear."

[YEA]  12/18/2011: Raleighmom from Raleigh, Nc replies: "The hydrogen peroxide really works. Our son was up most of the night with very severe ear ache pain. I had used hydrogen peroxide to prevent and treat colds, but had not used it on an ear ache previously. I was a little hesitant to put something in his ear when it was already hurting. However, it made a huge difference quickly. The pain is almost all gone now. I don't know why this works, but it does indeed work well. I would imagine that some of the people who have had problems with this maybe had a punctured eardrum to begin with. We have done this often enough that we know it works fine for us. We have had no problems using the hydrogen peroxide in ears."

03/03/2011: Elaine from Edmond, Oklahoma, Usa replies: "You need to irrigate your ears with warm water and maybe a little liquid soap and peroxide after you use hydrogen peroxide in your ears. The Peroxide caused the ear wax to dislodge and swell. You can buy a ball syringe at any pharmacy. I use my water pic and it seems to wash all the "trash" out of my ears pretty well. If you wait too long this will turn into an infection and you'll have to see your doctor. Judging by the date I imagine you already have. Many years ago my doctor told me it is quite alright to irrigate your own ears. In fact he gave me a syringe to do it with."

I reccomend doing it every 5 hours and 48 hours later you're fixed. Maybe you can't take it in this solution either but it helped me to the max and I reccomend it. I'm also using it for a toe nail fungus and day by day it's getting better and better. Have a nice one."

05/26/2009: Eva from Denham Springs, Louisiana, United States writes: "Most of the children on my father's side have had to have tubes put in their ears. I suffered from many ear infections throughout childhood. Typically, it was from swimming, but I even got it from taking a shower or bath occasionally.

Ear drops from the doctor were warm, oily, expensive, and took about a week to cure the infection. My mother heard that you could get rid of it with hydrogen peroxide and I have never looked back. Any time my ear starts to hurt, I put a few drops of 3% hydrogen peroxide into my ear and let it sit until it stops bubbling. Then, I drain out the ear and put one drop of rubbing alcohol. The peroxide cleans and sanitizes the ear canal. The drop of alcohol mixes with any water or peroxide left in the ear and evaporates it quickly.

This method usually takes care of the infection overnight, and I haven't had an earache for more than two days since I started using it. I don't know how safe this is, because I'm not a doctor. I do know that I have been doing it for the past 14 years and still have good hearing and no known problems with my ears."

At the time, it was late Saturday and I knew that if I were holding my ear from the pain that waiting til Monday just wasn't an option. With that, I went online to find out if there are any homeopathic remedies that I could use. Mind you, I've never been fond about homeopathic anything..! It's like your Mom giving Cod Liver Oil which never worked, know what I mean. With that, it made sense when I ran into another posting where someone stated that they used Hydrogen Peroxide. Pretty straight forward right? Have a skinned knee use Alcohol or peroxide, made sense (not the alcohol but the HP). This one guy said that his earache went away in just a few hours. Figuring that it'll take a day or so before it felt better, I was HUGELY surprised when it worked...! If there's one thing that I've done since is use peroxide for an earache. Meanwhile, I thought the guy who wrote this POV was just making it sound like it was slice bread to just promote the option but no lie, it worked and I've never looked back. This will work, hand over fist, no question and you don't have to wait. Just spend the $0.89 on a bottle and get relief NOW...! :)"

[YEA]  03/08/2009: Nadera from Woodside, NY writes: "A few days ago, I woke up in the morning and couldn't get out of bed because... I suddenly started to feel dizzy. Everything was going upside down, and I felt nauseous. So, I lay for a while untill I could go to the bathroom, where ofcourse, I threw up! For a couple of days I was confined in bed, later when I felt slightly better, I went to my doctor. He prescribed Meclizine 25mg(saying that I have ear-infection) which I took for a few days. Then I went to your site and read about H202. So, I plucked up enough courage and poured half a tsp.,of Hydrogen peroxide in both my ears. There was a bubbling sensation and I was scared whether I was doing the right thing, yet kept on repeating the process three times a day. After a few days, I went to the hospital to have my ears checked (just in case) to make sure; because deep down I was also worried what if, the infection had spread or something...

My vertigo, had not subsided completely yet, so I went to the emergency, the doctor having checked everything said, she doesn't see any infection in my ears, so she referred me to an ENT. By the time, I got to see the specialist (according to the appointment) few days went by, but I didn't stop the application of my home remedy. In the meantime my dizziness got cured, by the grace of Almighty God.

The specialist checked my ears and put me through several tests, finally discharged me saying everything was clear. THANK GOD!"

Yesterday i woke up with a horrific earache - it just came out of nowhere. It was making me dizzy and nauseous.

I am a stay at home mom of 3 little boys - i don't have time to be out of commission.

So - i came here as usual and found the Hydrogen peroxide remedy. i poured about a eighth of a cap-full (3 ml), tilted my head and poured it in. It was rather uncomfortable, mainly because of the liquid being in my sensitive ear, and the bubbling.... LOTS of bubbling :) But i don't think it was so bad that i couldn't do it on the kids.

anyway - i did it about once every 2-3 hours totaling 3 times. The last time was right before i went to bed.

I woke up this morning feeling 100%!

**other things i was also doing: GSE and Oregano oil in water to kill it from the inside, and immune boosting herbs. (if you use gse/oregano oil, please look up dosage info first!!!)****"

[WARNING!]  02/06/2009: Glass from Brooklyn, NY replies: "WARNING ABOUT PEROXIDE!!!

i have a history of ear problems throughout childhood. i havent had any infections or pain in about 15 years, since i was 12-- until now. last week i developed a cold, everyone in my house is sick and coughing, phlegm, congestion, some with fever, you know the deal. winter in new york. i read about hydrogen peroxide in the ear and tried it, it barely even went down, that's how clogged my ears must have been. but i had zero ear pain at all, i have had many sinus infections/ flu / colds over the years, all cured naturally with no spread to ear. 2 nights ago i had a severe earache, for 6 hours i was literally wailing in excruciatng pain. i put in a cap of peroxide 2 or 3 times, it started to feel better when it first when in and as soon as it got deeper the pain was just as bad. i think it's a bad idea to put anything in your ears, especially anything liquid, if you have a history of problems draining fluid or tubes put in as a kid, because that drainage problem can come right back as it did for me. the liquid got trapped in there the other day when i first did it (in attempt to cure the cold) and whatever clogging was there just left the little peroxide with nowhere to drain, and it caused an infection.

yesterday felt a little better when i woke up, but muffled hearing. woke up today with blood and white fluid (some pus?) coming out of ear. i got scared and went to a doctor. i'm pregnant and refuse antibiotics, she said since the pus isn't green, i can try to cure infection myself but still recommended penicillin. i will continue to inhale steam, eat lots of raw ginger and garlic and massage all around the ear (around the outside of ear, all those pressure points especially behind earlobe and a little down the neck) and that could cure the infection. do both ears to prevent spread of infection to other ear. also massage pressure points around nostrils. ACV is great too!!! i swig a few teaspoons mixed with water and cayenne, like 5 times a day when im sick. it's a great sinus reliever and breaks up congestion. turmeric is great too, it's a potent anti-inflammatory. hope this helps."

I came to the website in search of something to help with my ear pain which I associated with having impacted wax with a q-tip yesterday. I read about the peroxide and used it and was immediatly regretful! I became so dizzy that I passed out immediatly and when I woke up I didn't stop vomiting for the next 2 hours. It took the whole day for the dizziness to go away. And after all that-nothing changed in my ear whatsoever. I went to the doctor and he said to make sure you MIX the peroxide 50/50 with warm water, and to make sure the peroxide is WARM. If you put it in your ear cold-you will get the side effects that I did. So-I'm not saying it doesn't work because clearly for some it does. Just make sure you WARM THE PEROXIDE and make sure you DILUTE it, and make sure it really is ear wax because I ended up having an infection and a ruptured ear drum!

Take care guys!"
09/27/2010: Luvmypumpkins from Hudson Valley, Ny replies: "Having a prolonged infection while pregnant may lead to miscarriage or premature birth. Always treat infections with antibiotics while pregnant, as your doctor recommends. Trying the "natural" or "old-fashioned" way may result in "natural" or "old-fashioned" side-effects, like premature birth, which was very common before the use of antibiotics. Do your research and use modern medicine for the safety of yourself and your unborn child."

It is amazing how quick she stops the crying and holding her ear after about 5 min of putting peroxide in her ear. By the way I wanted to throw the fact that numbers show that doctors are only right 50% of time."

When my son was an infant he had an ear infection while my husband was in New Richmond sand-bagging the city against the flood. I had no car at home and pediatrician could not come to the house but suggested another one from Clifton who was a surgeon also. He came and prescribed using a few drops peroxide in Ned's ear. SUCH screaming!!!!! But it cured him in two days. Also remember that he charged $25.00 while the usual docs calls were $3.00."
[YEA]  12/31/2010: Jasmine from Oklahoma City, Ok replies: "I am soooo thankful for the EC participants! My 4-yr old daughter suffered her first earache recently. I tried alternating mucinex and children Tylenol to help with the drainage and the pain. Even Rescon - which is specific to Eustachian tube drainage. A week later we are still dealing with the varying pain from the earache. I have been to this site before but this is my first time posting b/c your recommendations WORK!

While she was sleeping I used a note from Garlic "YEAs". Mixed a small SCORE of garlic with olive oil then dipped a small portion of toilet paper in the now garlic oil (didn't have cotton balls). I balled it big enough where it basically sat on the outer cusp of her ear - did not push it down inside. Left it there for 1 hour while she slept. In the morning she was CURED! Chipper and yelling her ear was better. Then said there was a lot of wax coming out. The ear infection had drained out - it was a watery yellowish substance. This was not from the garlic mixture as I only dabbed a small piece of tissue and did not even stick that all the way in her ear. I couldn't believe it!!!!

To remove some of the drainage of which some had crusted on the outside of the ear - I started with a warm washcloth to soften the crust and worked my way in. Then to get the inner drainage I diluted Hydrogen Peroxide with room temp bottled water and put a few drops inside. My daughter reported NO pain and said she could hear the bubbling in her ear (smiling all the while as if this were a science project). THE REMEDIES WORK!!!! Thank you ALL for your feedback (even the nays add valuable insight - don't overdo it)."

[YEA]  04/18/2008: Sarah from Battle Creek, Michigan writes: "My 14 month old son has constantly been sick and had ear infections. We have keep going to the doctor and they just kept putting him on antibiotics. It turns out that the infection never healed causing the area behind his ear to become swollen. We went to the emergency room and they just gave him another round of antibiotics. Three days later went went back into his ped and they put him on steriods for the swelling because they said it was lymph nodes. Two weeks later his ear was still swollen, red and very tender to the touch. The poor baby was just miserable so we made another appointment to go back to the ped. Since we use H2O2 for cleaning out infections and getting rid of ear wax, I put some in his ear that night, let it sit for 5 minutes and then drained it. The next morning the swelling was down by half but it was still noticably swollen. We had is ped appointment that day so we went and they referred us to a ENT and hearing Specialist. As soon as that doctor walked in the room he said he was going to have to schedule my son for surgery to put tubes in his ear. what he has is mastoiditis, an infection of the bone behind the ear. After talking for a while I told the doctor that the ear was actually getting better (I left out the H2O2 part). He gave me the option to do another round of antibiotics and see what happens but if it got worse then I had to bring him in for surgery. Of course, I opted for the antibiotics. I did a total of 5 treatments of H2O2 in his ear. I did it right before bed and when he woke up in the morning after doing a treatment his ear was less and less tender and swollen. This moring when he woke up his ear was completely back to normal. I can't believe it! My baby is happy and doesn't need tubes put into his ears anymore. Thank you God for giving us H2O2. "

[NAY]  01/20/2008: Dawn from Peoria, IL writes: "Ear ache peroxide remedy - I have a nasty sore throat and ear ache and am so glad I found this site. I just drank some hot sauce and honey "tea" which seems to be helping so I braved the hydrogen peroxide drops in the ear. In the past I had severe ear pain after putting drops in my ear, but thought I would brave it this time. Well I was wrong, after the drops got past the outer ear and possibly down farther I had the same excrutiating pain. I tried breathing through it, but no way! What I want to know is - what's causing this pain? I've tried asking doctors, speech paths and an audiologist with no answers. I did have tubes as a child. Anyone out there have an answer?

And I was watching Rachel Ray one day and a doctor on there mentioned using sea salt to cure an ear ache. I thought he said something about making a "heat pack" out of the sea salt and placing it on your ear, but I can't remember exactly. Any clues? I didn't see anything here about sea salt for ear aches. thanks"

The reason I say this is because I think for some people 3% might be too much and cause damage - I also used 3% in my mouth for gargling and noticed it made the top of my tounge white.

I think Hydrogen Peroxide has it's uses but just start off weak to begin with is my best advice."
