[YEA] 12/31/2010: Jasmine from Oklahoma City, Ok: "I am soooo thankful for the EC participants! My 4-yr old daughter suffered her first earache recently. I tried alternating mucinex and children Tylenol to help with the drainage and the pain. Even Rescon - which is specific to Eustachian tube drainage. A week later we are still dealing with the varying pain from the earache. I have been to this site before but this is my first time posting b/c your recommendations WORK!
While she was sleeping I used a note from Garlic "YEAs". Mixed a small SCORE of garlic with olive oil then dipped a small portion of toilet paper in the now garlic oil (didn't have cotton balls). I balled it big enough where it basically sat on the outer cusp of her ear - did not push it down inside. Left it there for 1 hour while she slept. In the morning she was CURED! Chipper and yelling her ear was better. Then said there was a lot of wax coming out. The ear infection had drained out - it was a watery yellowish substance. This was not from the garlic mixture as I only dabbed a small piece of tissue and did not even stick that all the way in her ear. I couldn't believe it!!!!
To remove some of the drainage of which some had crusted on the outside of the ear - I started with a warm washcloth to soften the crust and worked my way in. Then to get the inner drainage I diluted Hydrogen Peroxide with room temp bottled water and put a few drops inside. My daughter reported NO pain and said she could hear the bubbling in her ear (smiling all the while as if this were a science project). THE REMEDIES WORK!!!! Thank you ALL for your feedback (even the nays add valuable insight - don't overdo it)."
[WARNING!] 01/26/2014: Sunny from Ca: "So from what I have read, you do not have to put solutions in your ear if you have a ruptured ear. So how would know if you have a ruptured ear? Thanks!
I need remedies for ruptured eardrum.
[YEA] 03/13/2009: Gean from Salina, KS: "At the very first sign of ear pain, put your hand over your ear for a few minutes, warming your ear. If your hair is long enough, pull some hair over your ear and cover with warm hand. Keep it there until pain goes away. If you have access to a hat or head band, cover ears to keep warm. If very bad you can cup both hands and make a "tunnel" from your mouth to your ear, blowing warm air. The key is not to wait at all, but do it at the first sign of pain. You can do this wherever you happen to be, and can save you lots of trouble. I've told my kids to do this, and no one in the family has had ear pain for many, many years. If time has gone by and you've had the ear pain for hours, then you may need a heated salt bag or some of the other treatments, although it wouldn't hurt to try the above. But, remember for the next time that a stitch in time saves nine."
[YEA] 12/30/2009: Amanda from Hot Springs, Ar: "my 3 year old daughter has a cold, and yesterday her ear started hurting. i gave her the usual remedy that i always use for my kids' ear infections that has always worked; it is an extract that has black cohosh root, chickweed arial parts, goldenseal root, passion flower arial parts, licorice root, and valerian root. i put a few drops in the ear, and if they are over two, i give 1/4 tsp by mouth. anyway, it didn't stop the pain right away,so i chopped 1/2 onion and put it in a cheesecloth, and held it to her ear for 1/2 an hour; within 10 minutes she stopped crying and went to sleep and slept through the night and never complained about it again and it has now been about 24 hours."Replies

[YEA] 06/17/2007: Matt from Trenton, FL: "I kept reading that holy basil leaves would kill the pain. I didn't wanna chop fresh ones up so i just found a small bottle of the liquid from a company out of India. I put 2 drops into my ear with the pain and it seem to get rid of the pain within minutes. I don't know about everyone else but i know anti biotic will get rid of the infection i just need to get rid of the pain myself until they do their job. This sure helped."
[YEA] 03/29/2012: Jp from Culver City, California: "Tried several of the wonderful suggestions here on an unexpected ear infection (garlic, ACV, alcohol & distilled white vinegar, coconut oil), and none of them made a significant difference, alas. Then I read a piece on Manuka --aka tea tree or jelly bush-- honey, and its powerful antibacterial effects. Fortunately, I still had a tube of Manuka from my last trip to New Zealand, applied a small amount v-e-r-y gently with a Q-tip around the perimeter of my ear canal, and voilà ! Pain erased. The infection was gone by the next day.
Nature is so wise; my personal belief is that bees are absolute angels of health and well-being on our planet. One can often find Manuka honey from NZ in health stores worldwide. It's usually a very dark amber color. (And, of course, being honey, it's delicious! )"
[YEA] 03/26/2009: Siafu from Three, GA: "My son developed an earache the other night and I was about to warm up some oil, but then had another idea; honey - locally procured of course.
I went ahead and used a dropper to place two drops into the affected ear and literally within seconds he went quiet and pulled the covers over his head. I was talking to my wife about what else we could do when I noticed he was not squirming under the covers. I pulled the covers back to reveal a wonderful sleeping little boy with no more pain. Altogether this took probably a minute or less.
This lasted all night and well into the next day until the afternoon when it happened again, but not as severe. Keep in mind that when it began he was kicking and grabbing his ear, not wanting me to touch it or do anything.
My wife took him to a doctor who said his ear was infected.
I have not had to try it again, but next time I'll be sure to reach for the honey. I hope this can be of use to someone, especially the little ones.
I don't know what warnings to give about honey but be sure to research it before giving it to your child or anyone, even in the ear."
Hydrogen Peroxide Treatment for Ears
Alternative Home Remedy Ingredients
- Hydrogen Peroxide - 3%
For blocked or infected ears, lay a towel down on your bed or carpet. Then drip a bit of 3% hydrogen peroxide into one ear. After a few moments you will hear fizzing. Wait until the fizzing stops -- 10 to 15 minutes. You may want to occasionally add more hydrogen peroxide to the ear. Then turn over and shake the remaining liquid from your ear onto the towel. If necessary, repeat on the other ear.
[YEA] 05/07/2014: Pam from Boston, Ma: "My mom used Hydrogen Peroxide on us kids since as far back as I can remember. Anytime we had an earache, we'd lay on our side with a towel around our face (from the ear down) and over our necks and she'd pour in the 3% Hydrogen Peroxide. I'm used to it now as I've been doing it for over 35 years. I have perfect hearing and no ear damage. Now - I've never had tubes put in or anything like that, so such people may require special treatment. But on me and my siblings anyway, we love it. I have one ear that for whatever reason, is prone to infections. Whenever the pain starts to kick in, I do the Hydrogen Peroxide treatment. If you have an infection going on, it will bubble up like crazy - that's how you know it's working. When it stops bubbling, simply tip your head to the side and drain it out - whatever little Hydrogen Peroxide is left will evaporate. I've never had any trouble with it getting "trapped" in my ears - but that's me. Like I said though - I've been doing this for 35+ years. I also advocate an onion poultice for severe pain...used overnight. And avoid getting water in your ears at all costs. Also direct sunshine on the ears is great if possible. HTH! :-)"
[YEA] 11/20/2012: Mundaring from Perth, Western Australia: "Thank you EC community for helping me discover remedies I had no idea about. Had an excruciating earache which doc prescribed antibiotics for. No thanks! Checked EC to discover Hydrogen Peroxide may kill the little gremlins causing my earache. YES! Happily dipped the "cottonbud" (Aussie for Qtip) into H2O2 3% and dripped a drop or three into the ear, tilted head while it bubbled for a few seconds. Repeated a few hours later and went to bed. VOILA! Woke up 6 hrs later and.... THANK GOD... no earache. Shalom."
07/15/2012: Azure from Toronto, Ontario: "Hi, I just want to know what percentage of the peroxide are you gonna drop in your ear? I'm having weird pain on the left side of my ear but I haven't got any colds or flu. It hurts at the back of my left ear to my neck on the left side as well. I used to have swollen lymph nodes on the left side of my neck months ago and I know it subsided but I think it came back. Will this also help swollen lymph nodes, if ever? Need help please."
[YEA] 12/18/2011: Raleighmom from Raleigh, Nc: "The hydrogen peroxide really works. Our son was up most of the night with very severe ear ache pain. I had used hydrogen peroxide to prevent and treat colds, but had not used it on an ear ache previously. I was a little hesitant to put something in his ear when it was already hurting. However, it made a huge difference quickly. The pain is almost all gone now. I don't know why this works, but it does indeed work well. I would imagine that some of the people who have had problems with this maybe had a punctured eardrum to begin with. We have done this often enough that we know it works fine for us. We have had no problems using the hydrogen peroxide in ears."
[YEA] 06/08/2011: Jas from Toronto, Ontario, Canada: "It worked! I was a bit skeptical about putting it in my ear but it hurt so much... So I got 3% Peroxide and a cotton ball... Soaked the cotton ball, tilteld my head to side then put inside my ear and squeezed so the liquid can go inside my ear... Kept my head tilted to side for a few minutes, couldnt hear anything but as soon as I straightened my head out the peroxide dripped out and I could hear again, and pain was almost gone!!! I did that a about three times in an hour... Went to bed and my earache is pretty much gone this morning!! Still a bit sensitive but nowhwre near the pain last night! Thanks EC once again... Awesome site"Replies
[YEA] 02/28/2012: Mtb from Milwaukee, Wi replies: "My daughter woke up in the middle of the night with ear pain that made it hard for her to tolerate people talking at normal levels. We did the hydrogen peroxide 3 times in a total of about 5 hours. Each time the ear pain was reduced and the last time her earache was gone. She woke up today with earache still gone. Seems like a winner!
Thank you - Michelle"
[SIDE EFFECTS] 09/30/2010: Jules from Denver, Colorado: "Here's a twist, two plus days ago I dropped hydrogen peroxide in my ear because I thought it needed to be cleaned. There was no popping or fizzing and when I tried to drain it, nothing came out. Now my ear is aching, my glands are swollen, can't hear a thing and my ear feels full of water. I've tried to drain it; jumped around, alchohol, heat, antihistamines, oral acv, gse... Anyone have some advice? I'm in so much pain and can't hear a thing but the inside of my head!! :("Replies
01/23/2011: Lisa from Stamford, Ct replies: "What did you end up doing to relieve your symptoms? By accident I took full strength 29% H202 in my ear and now it is a little achey. Hope you're feeling better! "
03/03/2011: Elaine from Edmond, Oklahoma, Usa replies: "You need to irrigate your ears with warm water and maybe a little liquid soap and peroxide after you use hydrogen peroxide in your ears. The Peroxide caused the ear wax to dislodge and swell. You can buy a ball syringe at any pharmacy. I use my water pic and it seems to wash all the "trash" out of my ears pretty well. If you wait too long this will turn into an infection and you'll have to see your doctor. Judging by the date I imagine you already have. Many years ago my doctor told me it is quite alright to irrigate your own ears. In fact he gave me a syringe to do it with."
08/19/2012: Anonymous from Pdx, Or replies: "If the wax is lodged in the ear, go to the nurse treatment room and get a ear irrigation- it is inexpensive, and it painless process."
[YEA] 04/15/2010: Sylk from Cincinnati, Ohio: "My 94-yr-old step mother told me: I really know about it curing ear problems. When my son was an infant he had an ear infection while my husband was in New Richmond sand-bagging the city against the flood. I had no car at home and pediatrician could not come to the house but suggested another one from Clifton who was a surgeon also. He came and prescribed using a few drops peroxide in Ned's ear. SUCH screaming!!!!! But it cured him in two days. Also remember that he charged $25.00 while the usual docs calls were $3.00."
[YEA] 02/04/2010: Matt from Fremont, Ca: "Let me start by saying that I have used this site many many times, but this is the first time I am writing in. The reason I chose to write in now is because this remedy is quite extraordinary. It works! I had my wife help, but she poured 1/4 tsp of Hydrogen Peroxide into my infected ear and it worked immediately. If you are like me, be prepared for what could be a loud POP! After the POP! my ear felt better. Thanks to all that make this site what it is! :)"
