MULTIPLE REMEDIES

3 YEA
2 BETTER BUT NOT CURED
1 WORKED TEMPORARILY

[YEA]  04/19/2009: Christine from Lynd, MN writes: "I have had my first (and very bad) case of perioral dermatitis for the past 12 weeks. After being treated with various antibiotics and antivirals, and two forms of steroid creams I continue to go through period of extreme inflammation around my mouth mainly---very itchy, uncomfortable and spreading to cheeks. After reading various suggestions on this web page, I found that this remedy seems to have nearly cleared up my rash/itchiness in 3 days times. Here is what I've done:

EXTERNAL TREATMENT
- Roll of soft paper towels so that I wouldn't have to risk infection from washcloths/towels---I dab my face dry wit the paper towels, while avoiding scratching, rubbing, scrubbing, etc.

- Three times/day I go through the following steps:
1) Rinse my face with cool water and dab dry with paper towel.
2) Use cotton ball to dab face with Apple Cider Viniger (ACV) (stings, turn red for about 10-15 minutes)
3) Combine organic yogurt (2 TBLS) with three opened Grape Seed Extract capsules. Spread over face and neck. Feels cool, refreshing, soothing skin after ACV use. I wear face mask until it dries completely. Rinse luke warm, then cool water. Dab dry with paper towel.
4) Smooth expellor pressed Organic Coconut Oil over face. (I continue to use the coconut oil periodically throughout the day.)

INTERNAL TREATMENT
1) Drink plenty of water.
2) Drink 5 glasses of combination of vegetable/fruit juices (without sugar added).
3) Take two capsules of Grape Seed Extract.
4) Other supplements: B-vitamin complex; vitamin D; Lysine.
5) Cut way back on refined sugar.
6) Limit coffee to 1 cup/day.
7) Drink tea ---green tea and Yerba Matte---throughout day.
8) Cut out nuts--almonds, peanuts, etc.-- till face clears up.
9) Eat LOTS of organic yogurt (without sugar added).
10) Get plenty of sleep.

*I also make sure to keep my hands off of my face and wash my hands very often!

Hope this helps!

Christine"

[YEA]  04/20/2009: HannaQueen from Portland, OR replies: "Ive had skin issues my whole life, and now all 4 of my daughters have excema as well. I moved to a small town with really hard water. It made all of us 10 times worst. We did everything you can think about. Here are a few things we have used and helped.
1. Use all natural lotions. no perfume/plant based.
2. Oatmeal bath. Take cheese cloth and put some oatmeal in it. Tie it close. Throw in your bath and use it to wash yourself. Very soothing.
3. All natural/plant based laundry soap, dish washing soap, laundry softener, soap bars, shampoo, etc. This will help out a lot.

We did this for 2 years and it kept the excema at bay. My 4 yr old started getting red spots under her arms, legs, and hair line. That was it, we had it. We moved into a larger ciy and the water was a lot softer. All red spots and itchy patches were gone within 1 week. If you have hard water, look into getting a filter on your faucets.

We believe in using all natural products instead of using steroid creams or harsh ointments. It really is a life style change but its better for you and your skin. So eat healthy, and use healthy items. Good luck."

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  03/30/2009: Bee from Portland, OR writes: "I have had dermatitis for years now. I have not been formally diagnosed due to a lack of insurance as a student - but my older sister had/has the same issue and she has been formally diagnosed.

It began around my 29th year. My sister thought she was being helpful when she gave be a steroid that cleared up her PD. It worked! But... it also made the PD worse. My PD was clear if I used the steroid every day and when I stopped, the PD expanded. She told me to stop as soon as she learned that these steroids make things worse.

I tried the ACV and didn't have much luck. Although I didn't probably give it enough time. drinking the stuff was impossible and during outbreaks, it stings.

Months ago my school doctor prescribed a topical antibiotic called Ethromycen, which worked, but left my hands with an orange tint and an odor. After stopping use, the PD came back.

I am now learning about Witch Hazel, Emu Oil and Neem Oil and leaves. It seems to be working a bit, but I think I will add the daily probiotics and reintroduce the ACV.

I have a feeling the PD is related to inflammation. Neem is an anti-flammatory. Emu Oil is transdermal, which means it can pass through the layers of skin, offering more healing. And Witch Hazel is a gentle, natural toner.

I hope my experience offers some help to the conversation."

[WORKED TEMPORARILY]  02/01/2009: Rashy from Wayzata, MN writes: "I've had recurring perioral dermatitis, as well as hormonal acne, for years. After taking antibiotics off and on for the last 20 years to clear up my skin, I went to a natural health practitioner for help. This was two years ago--I took an antifungal tincture, apple cider vinegar, and spanish black radish, as well as a multivitamin. These things really helped, and I was antibiotic-free for 2 years.

The perioral dermatitis reappeared three months ago (could have been a variety of triggers--dietary changes, season, cosmetics, hormonal) and I've been using natural methods to treat it--and nothing has worked. I stopped eating dairy, eggs, soy and wheat. I switched back to a natural toothpaste, and I switched to a dermatologist-recommended mineral makeup (and only use it to cover the rash on occasion!). I took ACV and applied it topically. I used tea tree oil, too. Nothing worked and the rash has gotten much worse.

I finally gave up and went back to the derm for topical and oral antibiotics--that was four days ago and I'm hoping it will clear up!"

[YEA]  11/10/2008: Theresa from Montgomery, Alabama/United States writes: "I discontinued using Fluoride tooth paste. This has had a positive effect on my dermatitis. when the doctor told me to discontinue the use, it was in a general list of what to do and what not to do. There was no specific information. No reasoning other than, I thought that my face would be irritated by the toothpaste getting on my skin when I brushed my teeth. This was not the reason. After having had this for a year, I decided to stop using fluoride. I went with one that did not contain it Within a week, the rash and broken skin was starting to heal.

Then I also read where you need to use a moisture cleanser to wash with. I had tried all the "non allergic" ones given on the list. Nothing worked. The water based cleansers only made it more dry. I found that with my face being so dry, I needed oil. If you have this you know anything and everything burns and stings. I remembered the old home remedy that my grandparents passed down to my dad about coal tar. I started using

"Rainbath" on my face. I remembered it contains coal tar that does not burn the skin. The coal tar was used way back in the day to relieve athletes foot and also mange on dogs. Then I went and purchased a bottle of "Sweet Oil" at the pharmacy, and put this on after I wash my face. I follow it with a lotion from the list the Dr provided me with Within 3 weeks, this has almost disappeared."

MULTIPLE SUPPLEMENTS

2 YEA

[YEA]  03/18/2008: Andrea from Westminster, CO writes: "I am a 30 F I have had perioral dermatitis as long as I can remember. I have been searching for a cure, I almost gave up by getting a prescription for Tetracycline but I have read the side effects of taking it are so bad. I also found people with perioral dermatitis have had success with a prescription vitamin called Nicomide which is 750 mcg of Niacinamide (amide of Niacin or B3), 500 mcg of Folic Acid, 1.5 mg Copper and 50 mg Zinc. SO, after I tried apple cider vinegar topically and it made my rash raw like chapped lips and very itchy, I went to the vitamin store and bought what I could find of the vitamins in Nicomide. I have been on 500mcg of Niacinamide, B complex w/ 400 mcg of Folic Acid and 50 mg Zinc for 3 days and my perioral dermatitis is under control I can still see a little redness but, it doesn't itch and there are no bumps or blisters. I have also been using Cetaphil to wash my face and Eucerin to moisturize and Aquaphor at night. I am very pleased that this worked for me."

[YEA]  12/18/2007: Francy from Lewisville, Texas writes: "Ok. After 20 years of dealing with dyshdriotic eczema, allergic dermatitis, contact dermatitis...essentially every skin malady recognized under the sun... I think I can provide some help. While steroidal creams such as diflorasone diacetate provide relief, they do not cure or prevent. The problem is organic. Here is the cocktail that I have found keeps me quasi-remissive with the least amount of side-effects: 1200mg of Lecithin, 50mg of zinc, 400 I.U. of vitamin E and 500mg L-Lysine once daily after a meal. For some reason, the anti-hystaminic effects of loratadine are more effective for skin disorders than other common OTC anti-histamines. I suggest one 10 mg loratadine once to twice a week to give the skin a "calm-down" period. Works for me...and I cook for a living."

OREGANO OIL

1 YEA

[YEA]  12/28/2009: Moira from Minneapolis, Mn writes: "I mix 4 drops of Oregano Oil mixed with two table spoons of coconut oil to thin it out since the oregano oil would burn the skin if used straight. This could be mixed a little stronger, but is working well for me at this strength. I keep this mixture in a warm spot to keep the coconut oil liquid.

I have been applying this to my perioral dermatitis many times a day and my POD has just about disappeared... it is fading extremely fast. Some patches are completely gone. All bumps are gone and no new bumps have erupted since I started this about 5 days ago.

I had previously used raw honey - which helped but did not control. I had also tried plain coconut oil which didn't help much. I am thrilled!!!"

PHENOXYETHANAL TRIGGER

1 BETTER BUT NOT CURED

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  08/29/2008: Laurie from North Royalton, Ohio writes: "Hello, I just wante to let you know that I recently discovered this sight after having ANOTHER bout of dermatitis. I am trying ACV, VCO, and probiotics but I'm not sure if the are working because I am on prednisoe until tomorrow. Last year, I had a very bad reaction to getting my hair highlighted, and since than I have dermatitis flare-ups. After much research, I finally figured out that phenoxyethonal is in many beauty products and I believe this is the source of my allergies. I have an appointment with an allergist mid-Sept so I will let you know my findings."

I started with the cream 12-4-08 and this is 12-20-08. I am thrilled. I washed my face twice a day and applied a thin layer of the cream after each cleaning."

REMOVE YOUR NAIL POLISH

1 YEA

[YEA]  09/08/2009: Melissa from Shelby, Mi Usa writes: "perioral dermatitis and nail polish

I had perioral dermatitis for a little over a year and a half. I was so angry because I could not find a cure. Anytime the rash would go away it would just return within a few days. Medical websites were no help and of course they have no idea what causes the rash. I came across a discussion where a girl stated that her doctor told her that the perioral dermatitis was caused by nail polish. I immediatly went in the bathroom and took of my finger and toe polish and the next day the rash was gone. I was so excited that this was a simple answer. However, confused at how nail polish could cause such a rash. After a while I forgot and painted my toes...sure enough the rash came back and I took the polish off once again and the next morning the rash was gone. I just wanted to share this and see if anyone else had the same amazing results."

SUPPLEMENTS

1 YEA

[YEA]  10/22/2008: Jayson from Boston, MA writes: "I've had dermatitis for about 15 years now pretty much all over my body. I would have a bout - then remission - a worse bout - then remission again. This pattern kept happening - each time the remission would not last quite as long. It then spread to my hands and did not go away. Very painful - to the point I could not dress myself - everything became a chore. Basically couldn't use my hands. I tried apple cider vinegar - tea tree oil - any home remedy (nothing worked) Went back to the dermatologist - creams and steroids were prescribed again!!! This always helps - however as soon as I stop taking the meds everything would come right back - pretty much the same as before.

Did some research online and spoke with a friend that was a nutritionist. Well what I found was that vitamins are the cure. I started taking vitamin C - Zinc - a super B complex - E - fish oil - evening primrose oil - flax seed oil. In about 3 days what was all over my body was much better. One week and its just about gone!! Now Ill have a very small break out here and there that tends to go away very quickly.

Anyway - thought id share my experience. Good luck to everyone."

TABLE SALT

1 YEA

[YEA]  11/18/2006: Celene from West Springfield, MA writes: "I tried using a teaspoon of table salt, mixed with a little warm water to form a paste. I appled it to the side of my nose (where the crease is) because i have a very itchy patch of skin there that I can't seem to stop scratching! Putting salt on itchy skin works! It breaks the scratch/itch cycle, but eating galic everyday will help also!"

TEA TREE OIL

2 YEA

[YEA]  05/19/2008: Beverly from Garland, TX writes: "Perioral Dermititis - tea tree oil (remedy): After a period of great stress (wedding, honeymoon, new home, new job and the Thanksgiving/Christmas holidays), I found little bumps near my mouth. I figured it would go away on its own, as it didn't hurt. When I found myself in the doctor's office for another problem, I inquired about the "rash" and he diagnosed it as sensitivity to facial creams, advised to go back to a brand that didn't irritate me and wrote a prescription for 2% hydrocortisone cream (anti-itch cream). I declined to fill the prescription, instead using the over-the-counter 1% hydrocortisone cream I already owned. Later, the area began to itch occasionally. Dissatisfied with the results I received applying the cream, I researched online for more information, saw pictures of perioral dermititis and with more research, discovered that doctors were not united on how to treat it. In my cosmetics drawer, I had a little bottle of pure tea tree oil. Out of curiosity, I re-read the label for what skin conditions it treats. On the label, it claimed to treat "dermititis." So I began mixing one drop with the small drop of 1% hydrocortisone cream and applying it to the affected area twice daily. I also stopped using any creams, lotions or soaps on the area during treatment. I have been applying this treatment twice daily for two and a half months now and it is almost completely gone. The redness disappeared relatively quickly, but the bumps are taking a little longer. This treatment helped me; I hope it may help someone else!"

[YEA]  04/21/2008: Shannon from Stillwater, OK writes: "I have been battling perioral dermatitis for about 6 months. I went to a dermatologist and was put on minocycline, which did clear it up. After 3 months of taking the medication, my doctor put me on doxycycline, due to concerns about negative side effects of long term use of minocycline. I could not tolerate the doxycycline, it made me nauseous and just made me feel weird, so I quit taking it and decided to look for a natural treatment. I found this website and began using a combination of remedies. I began taking pro-biotics, and evening primrose oil. I began washing my face with apple cider vinegar and baking soda. I also used evening primrose oil topically on the area of dermatitis. It seemed to be ok, until I got a cold. The area of dermatitis is around my nose, and blowing my nose constantly while I had the cold irritated it. The dermatitis began to spread.

I found a post somewhere about using tea tree oil. I had an old jar of Desert Essence Tea Tree ointment, so I began using it. I have used it for 4 days now, keeping the area covered constantly with the ointment, and the dermatitis is almost gone! It looks as good as it did when I was on minocycline. I think the probiotics and evening primrose capsules that I am taking may be helping too, but the tea tree oil was my "magic bullet." I have noticed that when I drink alcohol, the area becomes more inflamed. I'm not sure if this is due to dehydration, or the destruction of healthy bacteria in the intestinal tract.

I want to mention too that I have been under a great amount of stress, trying to finish grad school, and the dermatitis appeared during this time. I really believe stress and unhealthy eating habits/drinking alcohol contributed to the problem.

I hope this helps someone else out there. I love this website!"

TED'S BORAX AND HYDROGEN PEROXIDE CURE:

3 WORKED TEMPORARILY

[WORKED TEMPORARILY]  10/17/2007: Kristy from Lansing, Michigan points writes: "Hi...I was just reading the Borax page to a friend of mine and saw something a little startling in the testimony by Julie from New York dated 10/12/07. She writes that she used 1/8 of a tablespoon. The dosages I've read have said 1/8 to 1/4 of a teaspoon. I don't know if it's enough of a difference to matter but I thought I should bring it to your attention so you could figure it out. Thanks!"

EC: Thank you, Kristy! You are right -- the dosage is 1/8th teaspoon, not tablespoon!

Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Consider taking borax. Some people believed the demodex mites are responsible for rosacea. They may be right. But, there are others too that are not yet identified. I prefer to lump all these insect issues to just one category: nanoinsects. These insects have several weakness that you can kill them, or at least weaken them. One obvious ones is borax. The treatment can be broken down to two things;

1. Taken internally: Try 1/8 teaspoon to 1/4 teaspoon of borax in one liter of water/day. You just drink this water throughout the day. If it runs out then drink just normal water, with some magnesium added if possible. Magnesium is found in certain seeds such as sunflower. They seem to be synergistic with the vitamin D as vitamin D promotes calcium and the body needs to balance both magnesium and calcium to an ideal amount.

2. Used externally: Dog mange is confirmed demodex mites and the only treatment that effectively cured of dog mange is 1% hydrogen peroxide and borax saturated solution applied topically. Many people believe the demodex mites is the cause of rosacea. What I am sure about is it is an insect issue. The method of killing them is external application of 1% hydrogen peroxide with borax saturated solution to the face, unrinsed. It tends to cause drying. So you can apply appropriate lotions to prevent drying, such as jojoba oil, aloe vera or lavender oil."

[WORKED TEMPORARILY]  10/12/2007: Julie from New York, NY writes: "I have been struggling with seborrheic dermatitis on my face for 5 years. I have tried everything - drastic diet changes, candida elimination, probiotics, apple cider vinegar, topical steroids, msm sulfur, betaine hydrochloride, pancreatic enzymes, vitamin C, oil of oregano, flax oil, etc etc etc. A year and a half ago, I also developed perioral dermatitis and ocular rosacea. I read about borax and I decided to give it a try, taking 1/8 a tablespoon of borax in a liter of water for 3 days straight. After the third day, things were definitely changing but not noticeably better. I then decided to try to use borax topically. I combined a 1/2 tablespoon of borax with some hydrogen peroxide mixed with 50% water and I put it on my face then rinsed it off after about 30 seconds. It worked! My face feels as smooth as it did when I was a child, and my ocular rosacea is gone too. I didn't even remember what it was like to have normal feeling skin on my face with no rough patches, flaking, or redness. And I can't believe my eyes are back to their normal shape! I am so relieved. I feel and look like myself again for the first time in years. It seems miraculous. I am so so so grateful. What an excellent site. I suppose my problem was demodex skin mites, and the borax/hydrogen peroxide combo has eliminated them. I hope my experience will help someone else.

THANK YOU"

[WORKED TEMPORARILY]  10/12/2007: Julie from New York, NY replies: "I left feedback for borax saying that it worked for my rosacea and seborrheic dermatitis. It worked initially but it came back today. So I detract my initial claims in the feedback I left yesterday. Thanks."

10/14/2007: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Borax was not taken internally later on of 1/8 teaspoon in one liter of drinking water and only the borax and peroxide was applied externally. That's probably why it didn't work. Of course, getting the pH to 7 is still important. Dietary sugars and acid forming food is what is causing the seborrheic dermatitis."

I wash my face with this and leave it on for about a minute and then rinse it off. My skin on my nose and by my nose is now very soft and is no longer dry. VINEGAR AND OLIVE OIL

1 YEA

[YEA]  05/09/2007: Tom from Sunnyvale, CA writes: "vinegar and olive oil Ailment: psoriasis

When I was in elementary school, I had psoriasis on my elbows and knees, and all over the side of my face! It got behind my ears so bad I used to dream that my ears were falling off.

None of the doctor's remedies helped. Then my parents found this old home-remedy book from around the 1700s. It had what I call the salad dressing cure.

You soak the affected skin with vinegar for a few minutes, then you cover it with warmed olive oil (make sure it isn't too hot).

It got so I hated vinegar for years because of the smell (I think Apple Cider Vinegar would have been much more bearable), but it worked! The psoriasis went completely away, and I no longer felt like a freak at school.

Every few years I'll get a tiny patch on my knee or elbow. If it bothers me I'll use the treatment and it will go away."

YOGURT

1 BETTER BUT NOT CURED

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  07/24/2009: Lkh from Vancouver, BC writes: "Hi, I have had a nasty case of perioral dermatitis (which by the way is a worthless description simply meaning rash around the mouth!) since my digestive system went out of whack with Crohn's about 2 years ago. It progressed along with my stomach issues and I cut out SLS, sugar, yeast, dairy, and gluten but with no impact on my face. After bowel surgery I thought for sure my face would clear up but nope - it got worse.

The gastroenteroligists denied any stomach connection to the rash and the dermatologist said 8 weeks of antibiotics which I refused. I was on oral antibiotics in the hospital which made everything worse. I take heavy duty probiotics and although great for internal cures I saw NO improvement in my external rash.

Long story short: I FINALLY was told it could be an EXTERNAL YEAST infection that would not be treated by dietary changes and that I needed to apply organic plain yogurt. I did for just a few days and the raised red flaking bumps went flat! I stopped after a few days but am going to stick with it religously for another week and see if it goes away completely. I really hope it does as this has been such a frusrtrating rash!

Summary: I used organic plain yogurt on my perioral dermatitis leaving it on about 10 minutes for a few days and saw good improvement. Not completely gone, but very calmed.

Question - Has anyone had long term complete success with yogurt for perioral dermatitis and if so, how long each day do you leave it on? Also, has anyone tried Manuka honey on the rash? I heard that is supposed to be excellent as well.

Best wishes!"
