Home Remedies for Cystic Acne

Last Modified on Apr 19, 2014

Natural treatment options offer relief and treatment for cystic acne, considered the most severe form of acne. Cystic acne is characterized by inflamed breakouts that result in cysts formed under or on the skin. This type of acne is often extremely painful and causes significant emotional distress in affected individuals.

What is Cystic Acne?

Also called nodulocystic acne, cystic acne is defined as deep, inflamed breakouts on the skin that involve the formation of cysts. Cysts typically feel like soft, fluid-filled lumps beneath the skin’s surface and are considered the most serious type of acne blemish. The condition is genetic and is contributed to by overactive oil glands, excess dead skin cells and overproduction of acne-causing bacteria.

Natural Remedies for Nodulocystic Acne

Natural treatments for cystic acne involve those that reduce inflammation and naturally treat bacterial formations in the skin. Turmeric, vitamin C and apple cider vinegar are among the most effective treatments for cystic acne; however, dietary and lifestyle changes as well as other herbal remedies are also effective. These treatment options can be applied individually or in tandem with other natural treatments to achieve the most effective results.

Turmeric is a warm, peppery spice used as a home remedy to treat a number of health conditions including cystic acne. The spice contains curcumin, an anti-inflammatory compound, which naturally relieves inflammation. Curcumin also helps break down cysts in the body working to eliminate acne at its root.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a vital nutrient involved in necessary growth and development. The vitamin is also an active antioxidant that functions to remove toxins and buildup from the skin and body. Vitamin C also functions to repair damaged cells and heal wounds while minimizing the appearance of scars.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is one of the most widely used alternative remedies and can be used as both a topical treatment and an oral dose. As such, apple cider vinegar functions to both cleanse the skin and balance the body to treat acne. Apple cider vinegar also delivers a number of nutrients to the body to promote healthy skin development.

Cystic acne is often quite painful and can cause significant damage. Natural treatment options function internally and externally to safely heal acne and prevent further breakouts.

12/28/2011: Kimberly from Rancho Cucamonga, California: "Hello, Yes a change in the body's ph balance will help. I am a Licensed Esthetician. I must say that I am not a doctor and it is not in my scope to medically treat and so on... I learned about all of this through my son having a very severe and embarrassing skin ailment. We went to doctors and tried pills, creams, etc. The only thing that worked and it worked fast too was anitioxant alkaline water. We used the 2.5 ph water directly on his shin and he dranklots of the 9.5 water to cleanse and detoxify the acidic environment inside which was causuing the exterior problem. I would love to share more information about this. It really worked!"

[YEA]  06/04/2013: Coloradopnutbutrcup from Aurora, Colorado, Usa: "Hi everyone, I found this site approx 4 weeks ago and I'd just learned from a co-worker the various benefits of ACV. The key however was buying a brand that had the "mother" in it as it's unfiltered. I had the chicken pox at age 20 and cystic acne took up residence on my face on and off for the last 20 years. It's hormonal plain and simple. After tons of otc products and optioning against accutane and spiralactone, finally at age 40, I can honestly say I found my cure and ACV works. After reading this site and copying the recipe routine posted by 05/12/2009: Sandra D from Greenwood, IN I began the ACV treatment on my cystic acne and began to see immediate results and now 4 weeks later I'm testifying (with tears in eyes) that it worked. The ACV balances internal PH, aids in digestion and gave my skin a healthy glow. Without let up, I drink 2 tbspns of ACV in 8 ounces of water first thing in the morning and either after lunch or before bed. I don't add honey as I don't mind the bitter taste. I wash my face in the morning with either CeraVe or Dove, and use a cotton swab with the ACV as a toner. Personally, I don't think the smell goes away much but after I put on my Mederma (for scars) and Palmer's Cocoa Butter Fade cream, then Aveeno moisturizer (LOL) I don't smell anything. I'm a flight attendant and facing customers with cystic acne plays on your self esteem big time. Well get this, 4 days ago I didn't wear any make up except lip gloss and got compliments from co-workers familiar with my skin ailments. Thank you all for sharing and thank you for this site. I've also started making a baking soda & water paste to exfoliate my face 2 - 3 times a week which absords oil, and make a mask of mango pulp, fresh lemon juice and water and leave on for 1 hour, then rinse with warm water. My skin in smooth, 90% blemish free 95% acne free. I'm elated."

10/28/2012: Lowstomachacid from NY, NY: "I just have to tell all of you who are seeing results from ACV, this may be because you have low stomach acid and the ACV is helping you digest fats better so they're not ending up in your blood stream and then your skin. I just began taking HCL supplements and my face is starting to get better. It's not great but finally it's starting to look better. A few years ago I had stomach problems and took Nexium and then had a huge acne outbreak. It wasn't until I googled and googled that I found out that low stomach acid causes acne. I just went off the birth-control pill and I'm finding myself with awful cystic acne all over my chin, cheeks, forehead even above my eyes! And they all hurt. It's been rough. I know the problem is internal and I know I have other symptoms of low stomach acid so I just started this new regimen of a pill with each meal. Using ACV was on the list of other options to use if you have low stomach acid so that may be your problem as well if taking it orally is helping to clear up your face. I'm going to increase my dosage of HCL and also start using the ACV as a toner. Hope this works!"

06/03/2012: Anon from Detroit, Mi - Michigan: "i read a post that said to use _____ Apple Cider Vinegar as a toner.. I just have one question... Is it suppose to tingle? Sometimes it even stings a little. Ive been battling cystic acne ever since high school but its gotten worse over the years. Tried ever otc product that exists and nothing works so im trying something different this time around... I wash my face with nubian queen black soap... And apply the acv... I then moisturize with ambi acne cream... So ive only been doin this for a couple days now... ill le you know my results soon."

10/10/2011: Debbie from St Pete Beach, Florida: "I am 51 years old and fought cystic acne for years. I was on accutane four seperate times over 20 years. Each time it worked for about 5 years and then the acne would return. My face is now acne free but for the first time in my life I am getting cysts on my chest.

Here's the double whammy... I think I am getting these cyst on my chest because of my nightly hot flashes. My chest is covered with sweat and the acne flourishes despite prescription topical treatments. The only way I get rid of most of these bumps is to go to the dermatologist and have them injected with steroids.

So, after looking at this website, I see that ACV is mentioned to stop hotflashes and cure cystic acne. I am running to the store now to get some. I will report back in a few weeks. Perhaps, I can kill two problems with one remedy!!!"

[YEA]  02/12/2012: Deltagirl from Portsmouth, Usa replies: "have been struggling with Cystic Acne for a couple of years now-and nothing has been working. It has been horrible. A few weeks ago I had three start to form on my chin - I felt the painful tenderness that precludes cystic acne. At the same time I was starting to catch a cold, so began to take my regular "shot" routine of organic Apple Cider Vinegar to ward off the bug. I noticed about an hour or so later that the pain in my chin had subsided, so decided to google for any link with ACV and cystic acne and found this site.

Have started drinking ACV regularly since finding this site and so far it appears to be working! (fingers crossed! ). I am totally ecstatic and hope that it continues! I bought the store's supply of ACV! Lol."

05/13/2013: Valerie from New York replies: "I just went to the vitamin store and bought Turmeric caps and a gallon of ACV. I am 51 years old and NEVER had to deal with acne much less this painful cystic acne until I started menopause about 3 years ago! I have been put on birth control pills, numerous topical prescription creams, lotions and oral pills all with no resolution to the problem! I have had it! I work with the public as a Medical Assiatant by day and group exercise instructor by night! I am so self conscious of this and SICK and tired of gobbing on makeup to cover the cysts and redness caused by them! I hope the turmeric and ACV works!"
05/13/2013: Hopefully replies: "Have you tried moisturing with coconut oil (anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial) and cutting out milk (dairy may cause acne cycts)? Best Wishes!"

07/27/2011: Devra from Jamaica, Ny: "Stay away from foods that don't work with you. I suffered with cysts acne for 20 years and had to cut out rice, peas some bean and grains. It is true that apple cider vinigar is a miracle, it balances the oil of the skin and also gives a healthy shine all over."

[YEA]  05/12/2009: Sandra D from Greenwood, IN: "I am a 43 yr old woman. About ten years ago I started suffering from terrible cystic acne. I am taking testosterone blocker and minocycline. Nothing worked. I also use Duac gel which is an antibiotic and peroxide. Still nothing worked. Tryed thousands of combinations of medications and home remedies. Yesterday I read this blog on apple cider vinegar....thought what the heck. I will try it. I took 2 tablespoons in a glass of water and dabbed some on the exsisting cysts. Then that evening did the same thing only using the cider as a toner.

Today my acne is almost completely clear. Why, I do not know. But be assurred this is no joke. My dermatologist is going to freak out. I am very active in the gym etc. Now I can go in and strut my stuff with confidence.

My regime is:

Morning: Wash face with Oil free cleanser
use apple cider vinegar as a toner with cotton swab
(smell will go away in a second) drink 2 tablespoons in an 8 oz glass of water
afternoon 1-2 tablespoons in a glass of water)

night: Wash face with Oil free cleanser
use apple cider vinegar as a toner with cotton swab
(smell will go away in a second) drink 2 tablespoons in an 8 oz glass of water

Kroger or walmart vinegar works great.....

So for $3.49 I cured my acne or at laest kept it at bay I was spending

$99.00 month minocycline
$68 month aldactone
$70 month duac gel
$20-60 month on every over the counter thing I could find and thought would help

You may contact me if you need advice etc.

02/12/2010: Marty from San Antonio, Tx replies: "does it have to be a certain type of ACV? raw? thank you in advance."
02/27/2011: Janet from Kerr, Tx replies: "Beware of minocycline... Its is linked to drug induced lupus which can attack the skin. We had three miserable years with my teenage daughter. We are still have outbreaks but nothing like we had."
03/10/2011: Sjc from Philadelphia, Pa replies: "Thank you so much for this post as well. I just purchased some ACV for acid reflux and now can use it for these painful bumps as well. One has just started developing on my face last night. I'm so glad to finally find this website with these natural and very inexpensive remedies. Thank you."
[YEA]  05/04/2011: Meli from Las Cruces, Nm replies: "I am so thrilled I came across this site. I've used everything from antiobiotics, prescribed creams, even Accutane, which worked for a while but was hell to go through the treatment. I found this a few days ago & started using the ACV as a toner twice a day, and my skin immediately started showing improvement. I'm going to try adding ACV to a homemade body wash and face scrub too!"
06/17/2011: Asianmom from Austin, Tx replies: "Hello, my 16 years old son has really bad cystic acne. We spent so much money taking him to dermatologists and nothing except Acutane helped. Since he plays Tennis every day for 4 hours a day after school, after the first round of Acutane which worked wonderful on him, his cystic acne came back. His dermatologist would not want to put him on Acutane again because his exposure to the sun. So he is only taking an antibiotic right now and use Cetaphil as his cleanser. The antibiotic does not help. He is still breaking out like crazy. I tried the apple cider vinegar toner on him (twice a day) for a week now and I have not noticed any improvement. How long does it take to see the result? He would not want to take apple cider vinegar didulted with any thing. He tried one and spitted it out because he couldn't take the taste of it, even with fruit juice. Does anyone has any tip that can help him to combat his cyst acne problem? Thanks so much for all your help."
06/17/2011: Blkmanchgo from Chicago, Il replies: "Hi asian mom, Whenever I see anyone with with custic acne I like to recommend they try the yogic water technique. What you do is first thing in the morning you drink 8 glasses of pure water, then you do simple yoga stretches and breathing. It worked for me although I have a few other skin complaints. It's actually harder then it sounds he might have to build up to 8 cups so maybe start off with six. Some people even dissolve sea salt on their tongue after every cup but I guess thats optional. I know it sounds weird and he's sixteen but try it for two weeks and let us know."
06/19/2011: Linda from Alpharetta, Ga replies: "You might try ACV in form of capsules. You can also make the salad dressing with ACV instead of normal vinegar. Avoid mustard! It increases chances of break outs. Baking soda would be helpful as well, but it does not taste great either."
08/02/2011: Rachael from Watertown, Ny replies: "How long do you think until results are visible?"
12/19/2011: Christa from Huntsville, Tx replies: "Sandra, thanks for the regimen breakdown. It helped alot. Had to find a stronger mixer than just water, but once I did, me and the ACV became friends. So happy to have found this site! Thx again!"
03/18/2013: Aimee J from Centerville, Oh replies: "For the people who have used the ACV internally and externally... How long until you start to see results?"

[YEA]  04/10/2009: Ann from Seattle, USA: "When I was a teenager, I had terrible cystic acne. No medications helped me, but eventually I "outgrew" it. Now that I am perimenopausal (age 51) I seem to be getting it again. In desperation, I tried birth control pills. It helped with the acne, but the side effects were miserable. I quit the Pill a month ago. Last week I could feel the beginnings of a deep pimple on my chin (it wasn't terribly visible yet, but I could certainly feel it). I applied ACV with a cotton swab for two days mornings and evenings. It's gone! Before, there'd been nothing to do but wait for a deep lesion to surface and evetually go away (a long, painful and unattractive process!) Never has anything worked as well or as quickly as the humble ACV!"

04/11/2009: Ann from NY, NY replies: "Hi Ann in Seattle. I too have been having issues with cystic acne in my chin. How did you apply the ACV and did you rinse it off? thanks in advance for your reply."
04/12/2009: Ann from Seattle, US replies: "Hello, Ann in NY. All I did was saturate the end of a cotton swab with ACV and apply it to the lesion in the morning and again in the evening (after washing my face). In the morning, I just allowed the ACV to dry before applying moisturizer and makeup. That's it! I hope it works for you, too!"
10/03/2011: Anonymous from New York, Ny replies: "Hi there! I've been reading that many people just use Apple Cider Vinegar as toner and follow with moisturizer. My question is, do you follow with any anti-acne cream? (ie. I'm currently using the Acne-Free kit) Thanks so much for your help!"

[YEA]  09/04/2007: Jessica from Lady's Island, SC: "I have been suffering from cystic breakouts and chronic constipation most of my adult life. These issues seem to only have intensified with age. Mind you, I eat an organic, almost-vegetarian diet and am always sure to get my minimum fiber intake. Before ACV, I was lucky if I had a bowel movement every other day and always felt "backed up" and suffered from terrible gas! My face would suddenly erupt in cystic acne lesions that took weeks to heal. After spending literally thousands of dollars on products in an attempt to rid myself of both conditions, I am now able to throw out more than half of the things in my medicine cabinet. I take 2 tbs. ACV morning and night, straight-- I don't even mind the taste. I also apply it topically to my face every morn-- seems to brighten my complexion and tone my pores. If you have sensitive skin, you might want to consider dilluting it, as it is pretty strong. My skin has never been better and I am completely "regular" now-I only wish I had tried this sooner and imagine the years of suffering I could have saved myself. If something ails you, try it-- it certainly can't hurt!"

09/08/2010: Aya from Atlanta, Ga replies: "I am suffering from the same things you have mentioned in this post. I started to form cystic acne after traveling and my bowel movements became irregular. I have been like this for the past 4 months now. Did your gassiness issue go away as well? What did you do to become "regular"?"
08/22/2011: Elle from College Park, Ga replies: "Hi Aya, Wow, its so interesting that you said you experienced cystic acne when you began traveling because that was my experience too. I had to go over seas for my job in feb/mar of 09 and since then Ive battled cystic ance. Ive tried everything from all the stuff (antibiotics, duac, acanya, steroid injections, etc) a dermatologist prescribes and holistic methods as well. But I wonder if there's more to this traveling commonality.... Did you travel overseas by chance?"
12/10/2011: Leilani from Boston, Ma replies: "Elle and Aya!! I have had cystic acne since puberty... Its been getting better (im now 21) but still comes around every week or every other week.. And when it hits it hits hard and everywhere :( I have been traveling with my parents overseas since I was pretty much able to walk.... Hawaii, new zealand, australia, europe, carribean islands, I live on marthas vineyard.. Which I guess is overseas.. Mexico and costa rica too! My younger sister has PERFECT skin... Maybe an occasional whitehead... Me, being older have traveled more than her and to certain countries she's never been! I will try googling different search terms that correlate with foreign countries and cystic acne.. Maybe its a bacteria/skin disease one can literally catch from the water out there that the natives are immune to! Who knows... But this is fascinating.... I take ACV internally on occasion, but am going to use it as a toner RIGHT NOW! Thank you all! And also... Does anyone have any good alternatives to A____ tablets? ones without artificial sweeteners? I also have bad constipation... The best thing for me (because laxatives are terrible for you) are stool softeners... Docusate sodium (dulcolax makes the most effective ones) I eat oatmeal every day and occasionally use the leftover on my face! Great for drying up whiteheads and helping draw up the cysts. Maybe ill mix some ACV with plain yogurt and oatmeal! SO GLAD I found this site! I'll be posting more of my remedies while using ones I find here as well!"
08/31/2012: Tappr8 from New York, Ny replies: "Both of those things happened to me after traveling to Costa Rica... I wonder if they're related at all?"
04/20/2013: Dr J from Dallas, Tx replies: "Apple cider vinegar is very beneficial, however I would not recommend taking it straight. It is too acidic and can harm the enamel on your teeth. Be sure to take it diluted."

[YEA]  12/19/2011: Christa from Huntsville, Tx: "Thank you to everyone who recommended the ACV or A____ to help with cystic acne. Here is my story. I've been suffering with bad cystic acne for the last 3-4 months and have spent much time trying to figure out what was causing it and how to fix it. I thought it was my Adderall causing it, but when I quit taking it, I was still breaking out, just at a slower rate. I finally based it down to hormonal changes caused by going off of birth control after having been on it for over 8 years, but adderall does seem to severly compound the problem, so for those with cystic acne that are taking that, it's something to think about. I graduated this December and didn't want to go to graduation with this horrible painful acne. I couldn't even get pictures done because of it. I found this site about a week before my graduation and started on a regimen of ACV and A____ to see if I could get the praiseworthy results so many have boasted on this site. I had little faith but it was worth a shot. Like many others have said, when you're desperate and you've tried everything else, you're willing to try just about anything that might have a chance of working. On the site, people seemed to recommend either the ACV or the A____, so I decided to try the two together to see if I could get results fast! After just one night of using the ACV I woke up to better skin. The new huge cyst I had forming had been significantly reduced and the pain was gone, and my face as a whole looked better. My other scars, cysts and acne were reduced, less red, and my skin really did look brighter just as someone else on here had said. I was amazed. I have since continued on my regimen and now my face is almost completely clear. And it's only been a little over a week! Now that's what I call results!

I have been on face medication (spironolactone and bactrim) from my dermatologist for over 10 years for milder acne but it wouldn't phase this new cystic acne I've been dealing with. In fact, I could almost hear the acne laughing at it. No OTC face products worked on it either, which makes since because this type of acne is caused by something inside you, not by surface oils or hygiene related causes. I did talk to my doctor about the ACV and A____ working and she said it works because it is changing the pH of the body. This is because both the ACV and A____ are highly acidic. (In the A____, it is the high amt. Of vitamin C, a. K. A. Ascorbic acid that makes it work). I thought I had discovered something natural I could use during pregnancy but my doc said no, even on the ACV. It's too potent. So much for that idea, but I can still use it until that time comes, and can still use it on my face when pregnant. She said you just can't drink it if pregnant.

I would recommend anybody with cystic acne to try this out. It has worked great for me. Also, a benefit to using both the ACV and A____ together is that the ACV is cheap which saves you from spending so much on the A____, and the A____ tastes better, which saves you from having to drink so much of the ACV. To those of you having trouble downing the ACV, I feel you. I don't recommend diluting it with water as many others have. You guys must have mild mannered taste buds. I tried the water thing, and threw up. I have found that mixing it with Hawaiian Punch (most flavors work), or V8 Splash helps me get it down. They are strong flavored and have a sort of twang alredy which helps mask the ACVs twang. It is truely some gnarly stuff!

Here is my regimen:

Drink 1-2 tbs ACV morning and night

Drink 1 pkg or tablet of A____ in afternoon

Spot treat cysts with straight ACV holding on each one for at least 10 seconds

All over face with a 50/50 water dilution of ACV as a toner

You can also mix it up and do the A____ morning and night and drink the ACV in the afternoon. Just play with it. I would start out being aggressive with it and back off slowly until you get to a maintanence point.

Good luck and I hope this helps!!!"

01/10/2013: Sarah from Nashville, Tn replies: "Hi everyone, I read a lot of posts on here about how ACV and A____ (Vitamin C) tablets help with cystic acne bumps. I have been suffering from cystic acne for a few years now and tried numerous things. Currently I am on antibiotics prescribed by my derm, but no results so far. (It has only been a week. ) I am going to try the ACV and A____ tonight. My question is: I have a huge cyst on my chin right now. It sort of drained a little bit over the past couple of days, but every morning, I wake up and it is still big and red and hurts. It has a partial scab on it from where it drained part-way though. Will the ACV dabbed directly on it still help although it has a partial scab? I am so embarrassed to be out in public. I am 33 years old and hate being around other professionals at work with this crap on my face. Thanks for any feedback! This site is fantastic and I am so happy that I found it!"

[YEA]  05/26/2009: Cassi2 from Houston, TX: "i have had adult cystic acne for years and have tried everything the doctors have thrown at me. Well I don't know if it was all the ACV or what. I have a drawer ful of prescription and over the counter topicals and also antibiotics that i've tried over the years along with birth control pills. of course none worked completely and all had their drawbacks or side effects. about a week ago i had the biggest, baddest, most painful cyst i've ever had on my chin. i usually get one at a time but not this time - another popped up just under my lip line and another on my jaw line. i was so embarassed and in so much pain. my face was swollen all over the place. so i gave up all my prescription stuff and decided to go all natural.
i started with the all natural organic ACV cocktail three times daily for three days with 2 teaspoons ACV mixed with local dark honey to sweeten to taste and about 8-10 ounces of water and a couple ice cubes. i also took straight acv and soaked a cotton ball in it and held it to each cyst for about 30 seconds to a minute. i did this for three days, twice a day. then i used a ACV toner of 50/50 pure water and ACV and wiped it on my face twice a day for three days. i also cut some fresh aloe vera and would wipe it all over my face at night after all the cleansing. i used my regular cleansers - either pevonia or origins. its taken a week but only the biggest chin cyst is still there a bit but all the redness is totally gone. my face did get a bit dry but i put it into shock mode i am sure - that's why i only did the shocking part for three days and then moved to a maintenance. the skin around the cysts dried up and flaked off and i did have a scab where i was stupid and HAD to pick because i was in so much pain. but there are no scars and no more redness at all. my face looks great already. i am now on a maintenance of the cocktail twice a day, and toner only in the evenings with the aloe as my night time moisturizer. i am using aveeno for a daily moisturizer/sun block which is supposed to help with redness and calm your skin.

i am also taking a good B complex vitamin as that is good for stress and also i take tumeric capsules as they are good for acne and cleansing from the inside also. i haven't changed my diet but that was my next step if this didn't work.

i do hope this helps someone else out there - i really was too uncomfortable and embarassed to even go out and had to pile on the makeup."

07/18/2009: Julia from Houston, TX replies: "I'm really glad that I am not the only one who deals with cystic acne. I don't get the bumps on my face, I get them on my body in the most uncomfortable places like my inner thigh, on my chest or my back. So you can just imagine the discomfort I experience. Right now I am laying with a hot compress on my thigh as I just had a bump come up yesterday. I have gone to the dermatologist back home in Michigan before moving to Houston and he prescribed so many medicines that did not work. My sister told me about Neem Seed Oil that I could get from a store that sold herbal remedies. Since they were out I was told that I could use 100% Tea Tree Oil and that seemed to work on a few bumps, but this bump I have now is making me want to pull my hair out. After reading the posts about the ACV I would like to try it, but I'm a little hesitant to put it on a bump on my inner thigh. I also heard that taking Tumeric helps too. But I really want to get this situation under control because it can put everything on pause for a week due to not being able to move much. Any instruction anyone can give will be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks guys."
04/16/2010: Jgmurphy from Skokie, Il replies: "Don't know if this will help you, but I believe that at least in my case, my cystic acne is related to diet. I almost always get a cyst after an over-indulgence in chocolate, ice cream or some other sweet. Basically I can keep it under control by limiting my diet in these areas. Chocolate, particularly. I have given up ice cream almost altogether.

Once when living in California I went with a friend to Solveng, a small Danish town in the Inland Empire that specializes in (you guessed it) baked goods. Of course I had a bunch of cookies....and the next day, a HUGE cyst in the middle of my cheek! Coincidence? I think not!

I now keep sugar to an absolute minimum. Honey is a safe sweetener because it is antibacterial (i.e. the bacteria that cause infections can feast on sugar but cannot digest honey as the molecules in honey are too big.)

I find that with an existing cyst I do better to leave it be than to try to bring it to a head, since doing that almost always leaves a scar. For me, prevention is better than cures.

Good luck with yours! J"
[YEA]  05/20/2011: Elizabeth from Chicago, Il, Usa replies: "I've gotten those horrible boils/cystic acne on my inner thigh/lower back a few times, and the absolute best remedy I ever found was to put a good amount of liquid echinacea on it, and cover it loosely with a bandaid if it doesn't hurt too much. Keep doing this throughout the day and at night before you go to bed. I thought it was too deep for any medicine to reach it, but within 24 hours, the entire cyst had become a whitehead that was painless to pop. (wow this description is kind of gross, but I know it works!)"
07/28/2013: Charlotte from Dfw, Tx replies: "That is untrue about bacteria being unable to feed on honey because of the size of the molecules. When you eat honey, the molecules are broken down by your own body's processes into 2 smaller molecules which are regular forms of sugar (which bacteria *can* feed on).

What you're talking about would only be true if you were using the honey externally, like on your face or a wound, but internally, your body will break up the molecule."

I finally found something that is starting to work. I knew it had to be internal so i have tried al sort of cleansers. I went to a consultation to an esthetician who told me i need a bio feed back test which test all your body systems, food alergies along with testing your hormones, stress level and mental stability. If you take your supplements and products you use it will also test those to determine if there helping or if you need to stop using them. I was told I have a bad candida infection of the liver and that until i rid myself of the candida it wont go away no matter what i put on the outside. I believe it came as a result to taking antibiotics which i was given by dermatologist time and time again for acne when i was younger. I also used to drink. If your in Atlanta i know a great specialist who offers the bio feed back test it has done a great help so far and i know it will take time to rid myself of the candida and since i stopped eating anything dairy, with yeast, and sugar i havent had any more cysts on my face or body. If you want to know where to go email me. Blessing to all."

09/08/2010: Emily from Atlanta, Ga replies: "I live in Atlanta right now, and am suffering from cystic acne on my face. I believe it all started when my bowel movements became irregular. Can you please tell me the physcian's name and number so that I can make an appointment? Did your insurance cover it?"

[YEA]  03/12/2014: Activemom from Monmouth County, Nj: "After each pregnancy, cystic acne would appear. I had no idea what it was. It was like a clogged pore and then after five pregnancies, it progressed to huge cysts that would stay for months and they were all over my body. I avoid people and wear long sleeves all summer, as it has even gone down my entire arm. After five years, after the final pregnancy, I finally saw a doctor who diagnosed me with cystic acne. It has been horrible and such a blow to my self esteem. I just hide most of the time. I started taking oral antibiotics, monodox, and an avar cream, sodium based, which helped, but didn't solve my problem. One cyst on my face in particular that just persists and refuses to go away. It is extremely painful and extremely obvious.

Thank you to the man who suggested coconut oil. I cannnot begin to express in words how you have helped me. Within two days, my facial cyst has gone down to where I can see the healing skin and the reduction of the build up of fluid underneath the skin. It was sitting in my pantry all along.....

After insurance costs have changed and the price of medicine has escalated greatly, I decided to research alternative natural remedies and this site is amazing. I will continue to use this as a first resource in remedies for my family."

[YEA]  04/02/2008: Russell from Toronto, Canada: "Used many oils including virgin coconut oil in many of my skin care cosmetic formulations. But thats history. My problem has always been cystic acne. In my late forties and it is without a doubt extrmely debilitating. Large cysts would form on my face and it would take weeks for them to subside leaving a purple mark for many months. After My business mail order business went down the toilet due to 9/11. Nobody trusted the mail. I realized I had a klo of virgin coconut oil left in my refridgerater. Literally stumbled on the idea that VCO would help acne. Skeptical about putting straight oil on oily acne skin. I gave it a shot because one of my best sellers of my cosmetic formulations was an oil based, black head removal cream containg organic jojoba oil, actually it is a remarkable oil for rducing large pores. Bottom line is that cysts or leasins would be reduced within 48 to 72 hours. I was stunned to say the least. For two years I have had almost totaly relief from a lifetime problem. I have just started taking it internally since I realized I have had candida, probably for 35 plus years because of the massive amounts of tetracycline, minocin etc. (unconscionably destructive acne anitibiotics) It truly does smooth and soften the skin. My face looks like the moon, from acne scarring, although my wife says I exaggerate but It makes me look younger for sure and for certain. Don't use refined or fractionated coconut oil on your face it must be unrefined virgin oil. It really is miraculous. Cheers all."

[YEA]  08/07/2013: Crankybanana from North Carolina : "I have had cystic acne for over 15 years, always worsening right before my period. My skin was pretty clear overall except for one or two large cysts on my chin coming or going at all times. Long story short, I found that eliminating dairy has almost completely resolved the problem. I can still have small amounts, like the occasional slice of pizza, but when I let loose on a milkshake, it shows a few days later.

My esthetician told me that the acne profile of cystic zits on the chin and clear skin elsewhere is a good indication that the acne is hormonal. Not everyone has this reaction to dairy, acne can be caused by many things, but it has worked really well for me and a friend of mine. It is quite sad to have to dramatically reduce my dairy consumption, but it's worth it if it works."

08/08/2013: Wendy from Columbus, Oh replies: "There is absolutely NO reason to be "sad" when eliminating dairy. There are so many alternatives these days to dairy: e.g., almond milk is yummy and can be used in cereal and in your coffee and for smoothies. You can get coconut milk ice "cream" which is amazing! Just be careful not to eat a whole pint at a time or you may get diarrhea! (Yeah, this happened to me)."

[YEA]  05/14/2013: Tolwich from NH: "I tried eliminating diary, sugar, and gluten with a major improvement for adult cystic acne. I then eliminated coffee which cleared the rest of the acne. I take fremented cod liver oil, probiotic, etc."

01/21/2013: Lena from Kalamazoo, Mi: "The problem is GMOs!!!  I'm 22 and I have worse acne now than I ever did as a teenager. Like, "I don't want to go out in public ever again" bad. But about 2 weeks ago I started on an organic vegan type diet and my acne disappeared within days! The ACV and vitamin c treatments helped me a little, but this diet change has been miraculous for my skin!

I've come to find out that the trigger foods for the cystic acne which is really a type of allergic reaction are US wheat, US dairy, US soy, US corn, canola oil, and really anything else that's been taken too far out of its natural state. Try eating organic just for like 4 days and I'm sure you'll see a difference!

01/18/2013: Juliet from Los Angeles, Ca: "Yes! Diet is definitely a HUGE factor despite the fact that medication driven dermatologists are STILL so in the dark about this! Try eliminating chocolate and dairy (esp. from a cow) completely!! Then eliminate sugar dense foods - no honey, mapyle syrup, fruit juice (stick to eating fruit! ), soda, etc. You will see such a change in your face - not to mention your weight!"

[YEA]  08/15/2007: Tammy from Calgary, Alberta: "I suffered with cystic acne for years. It was so bad I had to go to the dermatologist on several occasions to have it injected with cortisone. That was the only way the acne cysts would drain. I was told there was nothing I could do. It was so frustrating and I felt hopeless and hideous. A couple of years ago I was in the spa and I told a lady there about my condition. She told me to stop using dairy products and to cut down on coffee. Prior to this I used to have a mocha every morning at work and I would also eat a bowl of yogurt for breakfast. I cut dairy and coffee out of my diet completely and have not had any cystic acne since! I sincerely hope it works for whoever tries it because I know how painful emotionally cystic acne can be. Good luck"

[YEA]  12/27/2008: Robert from Toronto, Canada replies: "I think some dietary changes can positively affect for most acne sufferers, and if you have acne and consider it a problem I highly recommend you examine your diet as the likely culprit.

I had virtually all types of acne that I didn't seem to be growing out of. Was put on that awful Accutane with the requisite monthly blood tests to make sure I wasn't slowing poising myself. Long story short, the drug didn't work. At least not permanently, because I simply was not addressing the root of the problem. Found out that some of the most common allergens can cause acne. I realized that soy, gluten and eggs, through a process of elimination, were the cause of my acne. Once these we eliminated literally in a couple of days my acne disappeared. Skin was no longer oily, and I felt great. Not only was my skin clear but by eliminating the foods that my body for whatever reason cannot tolerate I was running more 'efficiently' and thus felt better!"
04/14/2011: Ashley from Boise, Idaho replies: "COFFEE - I've had cystic acne for six years, since I was 20 (when I started drinking coffee in college). I cut out coffee for four months this past year and stopped getting new cysts (or any acne at all) on my chin. Ended up having a mocha this week and the very next day noticed that a huge cyst had developed under the skin on the corner of my chin overnight. It's a small possibility it could be the caffeine, but I am more convinced in my case that it is the coffee. Try cutting it out for a few months and see if it helps before drastically altering your diet, lifestyle, etc. Good luck everyone."
[YEA]  05/31/2011: Skidaddy from Knoxville, Tn replies: "My acne cleared completely when I went on the Atkins diet. I have since found a direct relationship between eating starchy carbs (bread, pasta, corn, potatoes, rice) and my acne flaring up... its not just chocolate and sugar like everyone says... its hard to give this stuff up, but it sure is nice to have a clear face.

Hope this helps someone..."

[YEA]  03/04/2012: Littlewing from Boston, Ma replies: "I had the same result years ago when I cut refined sugar out of my diet. I had huge incredibly painful plantar warts on my feet. I gave up sugar to lose weight and realized a few weeks in that the bottom of both feet had completely cleared and the warts never came back."
04/13/2012: Ozloz from Melb, Vic replies: "Thank you so much. I don't feel like the only one. I have recently discovered the horrible lumps I have been getting are called cystic acne. Only a month ago the cysts got so bad I was put into hospital for emergency surgery to my face. I have take 8 courses of various antibiotics which help the little pimples but not these massive lumps. I have just consulted a dermatologist and they want to prescribe isotretinoin, which sounds horrible from the side effects and honestly I was thinking there must be a better way than these tablets and constant blood tests.

When I read the coffee thing and diet it seemed to send a light flashing in my head. I drink way too much coffee, horrible sugars and a lack of natural vitamins. I think after your info I'll be cutting down or stopping coffee and will start honey as a sugar substitute. Is it the caffeine or something else in coffee (like the oils or something) would tea be ok as an alternative?

If anyone has some suggestions or info please post, I certainly do not want to have anymore surgeons cutting into my face, and would prefer something more natural.

Felt like a coffee but might crack out the ginger tea!"

Eat Lettuce, Eliminate Corn

[YEA]  12/14/2007: Kelly from Toronto, Canada: "Eat lettuce! I have suffered with acne since childhood and always believed it was diet related. After many years of drugs to treat (including accutane) and experimenting with diet, I do believe it is food sensitivity. To make a long story short, corn caused my cystic acne (especially popcorn) and chocolate. I have eliminated all corn from my diet, including corn oil and have no longer get large painful boil like acne. Chocolate tends to cause the small white or blackheads. If I relapse (popcorn just smells sooo good!) it comes back immediately. My friend also stopped eating popcorn and his cystic acne was eliminated. If only I had know this 30 years ago, life would have been so much better! I guess better late than never, eh? I found eating lettuce daily will make an outbreak heal up quickly and gives a nice glow to the skin. I will add ACV and see if my complexion can even get better! PS. Also, a natural clay mask will draw toxins out of the skin. Thanks so much for this website!"

09/17/2009: Paul from Davis, Ca replies: "I definitely agree about the corn oil. But I discovered this most dramatically consuming a variety of corn chip that used corn oil. I too was disappointed to find that popcorn was a culprit. I love corn so much, I'm still willing to hope that tortilla's or fresh corn might not be a problem. Has anybody who has found corn oil aggravates acne had the same experience with fresh corn or corn flour tortillas?"
04/04/2011: Steve from Ottawa, Ontario Canada replies: "I suspect I am just like Kelly. For some time now, several years in fact, I have tried to be scientific and tightly control what I eat. What I now suspect is that if I eat 'corn' some time later, e. g. 10 hours or more, I have a 'cystic' reaction and if I do not eat 'corn' I do not have a reaction.

A major problem is that it is very difficult to definitely say 'corn' is the problem since its presence is pervasive and it is hard to always remember what I have eaten.

An example of food that I think cause a reaction: McDonald's hashbrowns which, surprise, surprise, contains corn and may even be cooked in corn oil. I suspect it is not the oil, per se, thought I do not know.

If anyone is interested I can list what seems fine."

[YEA]  12/01/2012: Miss Lori from Charlotte, Nc: "I've recently learned that after over 20 years of experiencing acne/cystic acne breakouts that excessive consumption of milk was the culprit. I love milk and drank it with most meals and also drank it just because. My sister shared with me that when my niece stop drinking milk it helped her acne breakouts(and yes my skin sensitivites are hereditary, also somethign to consider), so I put it to a 2 month test and low and behold I only have the usual "lady time of the month" breakouts. I'm now testing drinking no more than 2 cups per week and so far so good. I'm so happy that I can stop using & taking prescription meds(Retin A Micro was the only one that worked best for me & has yet to be recalled and been using as needed since age 10). Oh.... and to add, Soy & Almond milks are nasty to me.

Cystic acne is just something trying to escape your body that not agreeing with it. I always knew this and have took this long to pinpint what exactly my body was reacting to, but better late than never! Now I just use oatmeal soap (Sappo Hill Brand from local healthfood store) to wash my face and witchhazel as an astringent and a light moisturizer when needed.

So don't believe all the hype that acne is just bacteria, it's more than that. Your body may be reacting to something that's being put into, just take the time to figure out what it is. Hopes this helps someone...."

[YEA]  12/02/2007: Lillian from Akron, Ohio: "Lillian (lprince/@/kent.edu) from Akron, Ohio writes: I read the feedback on this site and agree with the person who said carrot juice worked. I have suffered from acne since my teens and have a 100% guarantee that works! I found a book called Best Face Forward at a thrift store and did some of the things suggested:
1. I started working out daily to get my circulation going and get my pores revved up.
Remember, your circulation flows upward.
2. I kept my hair washed often to keep the scalp free of excess oils.
3. I ate carrots (raw) and sweet potatoes like they were going out of style! You have to eat plenty of them every day. The vitamin A and E are good for skin, nails, and hair. I also cut out anything fried, like chicken, pizza and french fries, etc. and put no mayonnaise or dressing on my salad.
4. I washed my face with Aveeno oatmeal soap and with Palmer's cocoa butter soap, in that order. The oatmeal dries up the pimples and the cocoa butter fades the scars and dark marks. Any oatmeal soap will work though.
5.I drank plenty of water!
I did this in high school starting in june and by the time school started back in august, my face was clear! I mean not a mark anywhere. My classmates remarked how clear my face was and asked what I had done.Even my mom was surprised and a Mary Kay representative that she worked for who had previously tried to get me to try her products asked what I had done.
I hope this helps somebody. I had tried Retin A and tetracycline, but decided to go with the suggestions in that book. Tetracycline can be hard on the stomach and Retin A smells bad and you need to limit your sun exposure."

High Fiber Diet, Homeopathy

[YEA]  06/19/2011: Tara from Mumbai, India: "I had severe painful nodulo-cystic acne on my nose since 1998. Doctors put me on antibiotics for a long term and when that had no permanent effect, they put me on roaccutane for a year during which the acne did go away but the roaccutane left me with severe depression for which I still need to take antidepressents.

The acne came back after roaccutane and I turned to homeopathic treatment which took a long time but the acne is finally under control.

But the most amazing thing has happened in the last eight months - there has not been a recurrence of the acne - ever since I started having a high fibre diet which includes large amounts of steamed okra for lunch and dinner.

The homeopathic doctor gave me the medicines calcarea sulph and hepar sulph in various potencies which always helped to clear away the acne and gradually decreased the recurrence."

[YEA]  06/30/2010: Kea from Austin, Tx, Us: "I battle cystic acne in spurts. I went to Arizona for 3 weeks and had no breakouts. I came back to Texas and bam...at least 10 cystic acne bumps in 2 weeks. I realized that these breakouts occur a week before or during my period. I found this website and began trying everything, A____ tablets, turmeric, coconut oil spearmint tea, and even urine therapy. Nothing gave results. The coconut oil seemed to smooth the rest of my skin but did nothing for the cystic acne. I began looking elsewhere and here is what is finally working for me:

When I first feel the cyst tingling I began to ice it (15 seconds on and off), which seems to help it considerably. Then at night I take a dime size amount of unrefined raw (thick) local honey mixed with the same amount of organic cinnamon and make a paste. I put it on my cysts overnight. Day 1 the cysts didn't hurt anymore and swelling decreased by 50 percent and by day 2 it is pretty much gone! All that remains is redness, no knot underneath the skin anymore!!! What a blessing!"

[YEA]  10/04/2011: Hannah from Middletown, Ct replies: "Raw natural honey IS the miracle cure for cystic acne! I read about it somewhere, dabbed it on before bed, covered it with a bandaid and in the morning it was much smaller and less painful! Honey is known to be a natural antiseptic with anti-microbial properties. The bandaid isn't necessary, but the honey DOES need to be raw (crystalizes). Honey in the bear bottle doesn't work. I haven't tried cinnamon with it... But I will!"
[YEA]  11/14/2012: Ancilla from Kansas City, Kansas, USA replies: "I just tried this remedy last night. I went out to buy organic, raw honey and applied it before I went to bed directly onto the cyst. The exact same thing as you experienced occured: the pain subsided (! ) and the 'knot' beneath the swelling is gone. That's a signficant amount of healing overnight. I should have used also cinnamon. I will try that asap. Thank you for sharing this awesome remedy! It worked way better than the apple cider vinegar! I just wish I hadn't picked at it earlier yesterday and the night before because now I have a scab that has to heal yet as well. Hopefully it will be gone by one week from today!"
11/14/2012: A.i. from Kansas City, Kansas replies: "Oh, I just remembered what I had wanted to say. I think this raw honey trick works because the honey works as an antibiotic, but the raw honey has, I think, properties that work as a natural steroid."

[YEA]  09/05/2007: Bev from Elroy, WI: "to respond to the woman with the terrible boils. I suffer from horrific cystic acne. I discovered that if I eliminate all forms of hidden MSG [do an internet search to find all that it is in] that my skin is perfectly clear. I am so sensitive that I cannot even touch anything with citric acid or natural flavor which is a form of hidden MSG and is in most shampoos, liquid hand soap, prepared foods, pop etc. I convinced my husband to eliminate all hidden MSG and his headaches, ezcema and skin rash went away. Now when he has any exposure the itchy, weepy skin rash comes back and today it is back with a vengence. He had mustard on Sunday and it flared. By Monday evening it was drying up and he licked the spoon of the ice cream he served our children and during the night it erupted so bad he could hardly sleep.

A good rememdy for all these skin things is a 125 watt clear infrared bulb. Not only will this clear up the skin but is great for any aches and it healed my son of acute asthma. Asthma requires a one hour treatment 1-2 times daily or more. The more you use it the quicker it heals. The only draw back is having to stay stationary so long. My husband hasn't had time to sit under it the past two days so he is still in bad shape. He started on the vinegar and honey last night to see if a change in body pH will help"

05/30/2013: Kathy from Colosprings, Co: "Regarding cystic acne. I saw a show on TV today that discussed this problem today. The show is Your Health With Dr. Richard and Cindy Becker, they talked about Lugol's Iodine helping cystic acne by correcting the hormone problems many people have. The show also said that people with other problems such as low thyroid, hair loss, headaches, keloids, ringworm, and many other ailments could be helped by adding 12.5 milligrams of iodine to our diet daily. They said this could be accomplished by taking tablets purchased at the health store or by painting iodine on the skin. Clear iodine can also be used instead of the red stuff we all remember for wound healing. Some may think that we get all of the iodine we need from iodized salt, but other added chemicals we incure in our diets obstruct the absorption our bodies need. I am going to try this on myself and others in my family and let you know."

[YEA]  07/12/2013: Earthwoman2 from Memphis, Tn, USA: "I have suffered from Cystic acne on my chin since I was in high school (for over 10 years). Anyone who has cystic acne knows that it is painful and hard to cover up wth make up (not to mention the deep purplish colored scars that they leave behind).

I tried every natural topical treatment available and nothing helped. About 5 months ago, my mom gave me her masticating juicer to juice greens (the omega J8004) and I started juicing a few ounces a day (varying between 4-10 oz). After 2 weeks of juicing, my cystic acne, which usually just form into painful mountains on my chin without every coming to a head, starting getting filled with puss (gross, I know- just bear with me) so I popped them (thinking they'd come back in a matter of days). But they never came back! I have been free from my cystic acne for over 5 months and I owe it all to the green juice! I usually juice Kale, ginger, lemon and mix them with other stuff like apples, cucumbers, carrots, brocoli, watermelon rinds or any other veggie I have lying around. I always use organic too.

The scars are fading away too and for that I use a combination of jojoba oil and calendula balm. I know a juicer is a big investment, so maybe start with a less expensive one like this one: breville compact juicer.

I hope this helps someone out there as much as it has helped me!"

All treatments worked for a few weeks, then didn't help anymore. Witch hazel, noxema, aloe, medicated pads, oxy... So, one day I use my two brothers Lava soap they used after working on motors in the garage. That lava soap didn't cure my acne, but reduced it to half what it had been. Best - not a single scar. Photos from before are terrible, from after is skin like new. Today almost 60 yrs old, and still get compliments on baby-like smooth face skin. [YEA]  07/11/2013: Miracles from Santa Monica, Ca, United States: "I thought it was crazy that something as simple as lavender oil could actually work on my cystnic acne - after going to doctors for cortisone injections to reduce inflammation and expedite the healing. But you must try Lavender Oil and put it on your acne as soon as they develop. The swelling will go down immediately and the pimple/cystic acne will come to a head within 24-48 hours. Thank you to Earth Clinic and everybody who writes in for these wonderful cures!"

[YEA]  05/09/2011: L from Horsham, Surrey: "Get occasional acne cysts and decided to try pure lavender oil, dabbing several times a day rather than leaving on the skin for an hour as per previous post. Have found this has really reduced its size over the last 24 hrs. Will continue until gone. Great tip, thanks!"

[YEA]  10/12/2011: Es from Newton, Nj replies: "You can dab it on but the way to really get rid of the cyst is to do the compress method I described. I've tried both ways - I discovered this by accident several years ago and also tried dabbing lavender on which helps some, but the tried and true way to really get rid of them or completely prevent them from growing, is the compress method as I originally posted."

[YEA]  12/13/2010: Es from Newton, Nj: "I meant to share this with people for years and somehow never got around to it, but I want to share this because ance cysts are really humiliating - I used to get them sometimes, and sometimes, still do. But they don't cause me the awful grief they used to, including a big ugly cyst that lasts for two weeks, and red marks that last for months if you pick at them. I stumbled upon a way to make them go down instantly and let me tell you, I'd tried a dermatologist and they prescribed a special cyst cream that cost $50 even with my insurance! It was like a $187. Cream that only dried the living cr*p out of the cysts but didn't really help.

OK so the cure is simple. You take a few drops of lavender essential oil, you put it on a little swatch of cotton, and stick it on the cyst. You leave it there for an hour or even two. Here's the deal. Sometimes, before the cyst actually shows up, you feel that little painful spot on the skin, and if you catch it then, that's the best time, because if you feel the cyst coming on, and put the lavender on, you will find the cyst never really gets to develop. Sometimes you might want to do the lavender treatment again the following day for good measure. This stops the cyst before it can really form at all. But sometimes, you don't catch it until it's come up. In that case, you will have to treat a few times, but it will completely reduce your misery. Some cysts are more stubborn than others, but none of them can stand up to lavender essential oil. I ALWAYS keep lavender oil in the house.

So, if the cyst has come in, then here's how you do it:
I just pull a little piece of cotton off a cotton ball, so it covers the cyst completely, and drop the lavender oil on with a dropper. The little cotton patch should be soaked with the lavender oil. Do not dilute, lavender can be used on the skin undiluted. Leave it on at least an hour. That cyst will be beginning to go down from that point. You may need to repeat this treatment once daily for the next couple of days if it's a stubborn cyst and you got it later in the development, but it's ok, it WILL NOT become a big monster, it will not grow, from when you begin treating, it will stop growing and start dying. Every day it shrinks more. This has worked for me every time, and I discovered this trick by accident about 5 years ago.

My handsome younger brother poo-pooed it as nonsense until he got a cyst zit on his nose, and suffered a humiliating job interview where he swears he wasn't hired cause he looked like he was growing a second nose the thing was so big. He said the interviewer couldn't help looking at it. Well, a few weeks later another cyst started coming in, what did I see but my brother, raiding the medicine cabinet for my lavender oil! It worked for him too, so he bought his own bottle (it's cheap and tons of companies manufacture it, very easy to find). He keeps some at home just in case because you may not get them a lot but when you do, they SUCK.

Anyway, my neighbor had a problem with cysts for years, and used to go to her DR to have them drained. I gave her some of my lavender oil and guess what? It worked for her too. She was amazed. So don't suffer with a huge ugly cystic zit on your face that hurts physically, lasts for ages, and causes embarrassment. Either hit your local health food store, or search online for some pure lavender essential oil and give it a shot. Do not put a lavender compress on your skin if you have just put on aloe vera gel (or fresh aloe vera gel from the leaf) - the aloe combined with the lavender compress will burn the skin and leave a scab!!! (Found that out the hard way - using myself as a guinea pig). Good luck. ES"

[YEA]  02/23/2011: Lolo from Fullerton, Ca replies: "I tried this compress with Lavander oil since I felt a sore bump in between my eyes 3 days ago. Wow! I was so surprised when the zit never came up and the soreness went away after a day and a half! I've never had anything work this fast! That's one less pimple I have to nurse for a month. No ugly redness and no bump ever surfaced. Thanks for this post! I will be sharing it with everyone I know!"
05/17/2011: Cysticzithater from Grand Rapids, Mi replies: "Oh boy. LOL. I laughed so hard at your hiliarious and artful way of expressing yourself about cystic zit dilemmas. I, too, have suffered terribly with the embarassing condition. In fact, I have one on my chin again, which drove me to seek help on the internet today. I love this web site! Last year, I purchased lavender oil but I never thought to use it for a zit. And after looking back, I stopped drinking coffee with cream and other dairy products and noticed no new zits. Thanks for your help!"

I then came to the conclusion that it must be caused by something hormonal rather than an overgrowth of bacteria and clogged pores. I started taking 1 tsp of Maca powder in orange juice and in 5 days my skin had cleared.

I got lazy about taking it (it doesn't have the most pleasant taste so perhaps I was avoiding it) and my skin began to break out again. I started back up on my regimen of Maca powder in orange or apple juice and within 3 days my skin had cleared again."

I use this anytime I feel one coming and it is a miracle product. A lot stronger than honey in the US. 17oz will last years."

[YEA]  07/22/2013: Andrea L from Glendale, Ca replies: "I use Makuna Honey for my adult acne AND all other wounds. THE UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) tells you how much healing properties the jarred honey posses. I began with UMF 12 to save a few bucks, but after having success with that one, I splurged for the UMF 16... It works like a dream! I leave it on my face for hours sometimes; it makes my whole face glow! It very moisturizing, while purifying. Manuka honey acts as an antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal treatment. ; it heals nearly anything in record time. It ALSO works great internally (not for acne) and it good just to snack on!"

[YEA]  07/23/2009: Drea from Sarasota, Florida: "I have been suffering from cystic acne for about 2 years. I went on birth control and that helped, but my skin was very oily, and I was very moody all the time. When I went off it, i developed really bad cystic acne. It was bad one month and then it was better. But it never went away. I came to the site about a year ago and started using many of the remedies but never was consistent to see results. But I was getting very depressed TO see my face the way it was. So I changed my diet, started ACV, cooked only with EVCO. I gave up all caffeine, coffee, started the Paleo diet, drank lots of water. I also started taking some supplements like zinc, omega 3, and evening primose oil. But within a month my face was the worst it had ever been!!! I was so depressed. I was really good about my diet, and I was losing a lot of weight. I didnt know what to do anymore!!! I was just going to stay at home and never go out! I started doing alot of research, and I stopped taking all the supplements, stopped drinking ACV and I wasnt cooking with any oil, I did continue to follow the Paleo diet. Within a week my face was a little better, so I decided to start taking the Omega 3, and Primrose oil again. Acne was back in a few days. So it was the EFA'S that were giving me this terrible acne!!! It was trial and error, but its true. I heard about saw palmetto, and I decided to give a try I take 320mg daily . It started working!!! I read that it helps to regulate hormones especially testosterone. I also read about the spearmint tea and gave it a try two cups a day. It works wonderful. I also noticed that my hair on legs wasnt growing as fast!!! I read that it helps with the androgens and with body hair. I feel so happy, my acne is gone, less body hair. I hope this info helps someone, because it has helped me! I still take the ACV it helps with weight loss cook with EVCO and once a week 50mg of zinc, I only use organic makeup and face cleansers! I stay away from sugar, eat lots of veggies and fruit!"

07/23/2009: Thealth from Los Angeles, CA replies: "Hi Drea,

I am happy to know that your acne is much better now and you have a clear skin. I do have the same issue and want to know what is palmetto.. where do i get that.

Thanks a lot.

Most health food stores should carry it...

05/22/2011: Davy from Seattle, Wash replies: "Cystic acne may be contributed to an increase in the androgen hormone which increases as you get closer to your menstruation. Studies show that the androgen hormones decrease when you drink spearmint or peppermint which contributes to decrease in the androgen. So drink a couple cups of peppermint or spearmint tea is worth trying to decrease hormone cystic acne . I do this as well as use tea tree oil on the cystic acne."

Oregano Oil, Apple Cider Vinegar

YEA (2)

[YEA]  08/14/2009: Alicia from Nyc, Usa: "Cysts or cystic acne can be treated with one of these two remedies: oregano oil or apple cider vinegar.

For extremely stubborn cysts: Place enough oregano oil on a cotton ball to cover the surface area of the cyst. (You can also use cotton pads whatever you find works for you) Place the cotton ball on the cyst and secure with a band aid or medical tape. The oregano oil may burn but don't worry this means it is working!

The oregano oil will bring all the fluid to the surface and the cyst will turn from the red or pink color it originally was to a greenish / white puss color. Do not be alarmed the oregano oil is pulling all the impurities to the surface. Soon the cyst will start to drain.

Repeat the cotton ball treatment until the cyst is completely drained. Once it is completely drained cease the cotton ball treatment. Keep the area clean with peroxide and allow it to dry so it can scab over.

While it is scabbed over, keep it clean and help it heal by putting honey on it. Honey can be used in place of petroleum based antibiotic ointments. Honey is a natural antibiotic which will not clog pores, unlike petroleum based antibiotic ointments, and will keep the scab somewhat moist to avoid scarring.

This treatment will take about one week to complete. The cyst will become unsightly, so see if you can arrange to stay home that week or keep it covered with a bandage. It will probable result in scarring but so would any other treatment or lack there of.

After the cyst is gone, wash with a gentle, all natural, non animal fat soap. Use a nickel size portion of olive oil with 2-3 drops oregano oil and 4 drops sea buckthorn oil. Rub together in your hands and spread over skin to prevent cystic acne, cysts, and acne. It will give your skin a yellow tinge so you may choose to use this treatment following night time cleansing only. It will not clog your pores and will aid in healing any scars.

Apple cider vinegar can also be used to clear up cysts. I have never tried it in place of the oregano oil in the above treatment but it may work in lieu.

Soak a qtip or cotton ball in apple cider vinegar. Apply to cyst or hold in place for a couple minutes. This is a slower method than the oregano oil but it does not make the cyst look unsightly, it just dries it up gradually.

You can also try apple cider astringent for a daily cleanser.
Let green tea steep in a cup. Measure equal parts green tea and apple cider vinegar and mix. Pour into glass bottle (has to be glass). Use as an astringent and wipe on face with cotton ball after cleansing.

These treatments can be used for cysts, cystic acne, or acne."

[YEA]  04/10/2012: Skep from Charlotte, Nc replies: "Clean your face really well with a mild cleanser... But it must clean off your OIL.. That is what the bacteria likes to eat. Then use a moisturizer with feverfew in it.. By Av**nO. Do this 3 or 4 times a day, depending on your oil production. Take WILD OIL OF OREGANO.. 4 drops in 4 oz. Of water.. 1 or 2 times a day. Stay away from all sweet tasting foods... Even sugar free gum. No STARCHY carbs, no potatoes, rice, but sprouted breads - organic- and low glycemic noodles are okay in limited amounts. NO SUGARS, no vegetable oil fried foods. Just use a little butter to saute, if necessary. I have discovered for my son that he really can't handle carbs and sugars. Just staying away from wheat didn't help him and he still broke out. LOW GLYCEMIC FOODS ARE GREAT! ... DO THIS and you should see a difference... Hope this helps... We have had a horrible 3 years. 08/13/2012: Sarah from Winnipeg, Mb replies: "I'm 36 and I've been dealing with moderate acne, some cystic, ever since I stopped using birth control pills. For the last week, I've been taking oil of oregano 5-7 drops floated on a shot of water twice a day and applying apple cider vinegar to my face at night with a cotton pad. It's been a rough week, because these two treatments have forced all the eruptions to the surface at once, but it's all healing now and I'm not seeing any new acne developing. Fingers crossed, but I'm really think this is something that's going to clear me up almost completely."

Finally after much research, have come across a supplement named;

A pill or capsule that will internally heal the cause of the acne, all these creams do fine, does not stop the cause of the acne, you can buy this online, just type in this name and it will bring you to it, not Panethetic acid, that is not it.

It has given me great success and I have tried everything.

Also watch your diet, stop eating peanuts and foods with oil.

Rostoplasty website has some amazing russian salves. Though pricey they heal cystic acne scars after a good baking soda scrub. So does Camellia Oil (oil of green tea leafs). This is a secret Japanese beaty treatment. My cystic acne is cured. Red rasberry did this for me. I got cystic acne @ 24 after my second child. Please give it a try."

07/27/2012: Victoria from Homestead, Florida replies: "I'm 32 tears old and i've been battling with acne since I was 14 and developed cystic acne at 25 years old. So this has been a terrible battle for me. My daughter gets teased and made fun of in class by her peers because of my acne. Makes me feel so horrible. I even get people that stop me in the store to give me advice on how to clear it up. It's that bad for me and embarrassing. I don't like to leave the house if I don't have to. Thankfully my husband is very understanding and he tells me to stop buying crap that doesn't work and let it be. He's starting to get frustrated watching me struggle. I've spent thousands of dollars trying to get clear skin. I've tried the ACV and it didn't help me much. I tried MilkThistle (found in the vitamin isle at the pharmacy) and it helped a little. I did a lot of research online and after doing a few things I've notived 35-40% progress on my skin. I just started 1 month ago and maybe I will have better results if I continue.

This is what I do:

AM: Use warm water to help open pores.

Mix 1 tsp of milk and sugar. Don't vigorously mix it, you don't want to dissolve the sugar. Use your clean finger. It must be a paste like consistency. You may want to add more milk or more sugar. The proteins in the milk will dissolve any dead skin and impurities on the skin. The sugar is used as a natural exfoliant to help scrub the impurities away. Do this 3 times a week. After the first time you will be amazed at the difference in the feeling of you skin.

I use an antibacterial soap on my face after the above step. Dry your face. Once the scrub is done everything you put on your skin can be better absorbed because their is no longer that barrier of impurities. After the soap I use ACV as a toner. Let dry. I then use an oil free lotion. Any moisturizer for you skin type should do fine.

I use the antibacterial soap again. Main thing is to keep the bacteria off your skin long enough not to cause breakouts. Wash with warm water, allows to pores to open. Rinse with cold water, allows your pores to close to stop bacteria from getting in and helps the sabacous glands not to produce too much oil. Which the oil is what bacteria feeds off of and return causes the breakouts. I then use the ACV as toner again. At night I don't use lotion because I've noticed at night is when your face will produce more oil.

I still drink my vitamins everyday:

Once A Day Womans, Milk Thistle (helps clean the liver), Zinc, B12, and I just started using Saw Palmetto (helps lower testosterone levels in woman who get acne along the jaw line and chin). It may be hormonal but I will find out in longer use.

Everything I mentioned above is worth trying. It's not going to harm your bodies.

Even if I help one person, I will be happy knowing I changed a life.

Good Luck everyone on your journey to clear skin."

01/07/2014: Natural_believer from Huntsville, AL: "I have suffered from severe acne twice in my life, both during and after my pregnancies. The first child the acne went away about 4 months after and by the 2nd child @ 4 months the dermo put me on Accutane . Both were what you would consider cystic acne. 5 years almost to the day, of taking my last dose of accutane the acne is back and worse than either times I had it before. Now it is in my hair, on my face, back and chest. It is unlike anything I have experienced before. They are large nodules but the skin on and around them is extremely thin and easy to break. They leak scab severely and seem to swell all skin around them. The back and chest are not as big and red but more large areas of black heads but can get agitated by undergarments. I refuse to go back to the dermo because he will only put me back on that awful acutane and I have a feeling it will just keep coming back. I have also been on doxycycline for months and I quit taking it as well because frankly it never helped enough to tear my system down even more. I have tried witch hazel and Hydrogen Peroxide and both have helped tremendously at keeping it from opening and scabbing as badly. I want some input on other things that might help actually stop the problem all together. I just bought some ACV to add to the regiment. When the problem started back I did notice that I began to crave milk by the gallons! Can not get enough?? Any ideas on why that may be? Please help. I really can't take this anymore:( I have worked in Public Service jobs for years and it is what I enjoy but the acne has made it hard for me to even get jobs , possible employers see my face and think something is wrong with me!"

01/07/2014: Theresa from Mpls., Mn replies: "Hey NB!

Something about your post made me think of demodicosis, so here goes.

Demodex are mites that normally live on your skin and cause no problems. In times of stress, for some people, the mite population grows out of balance, and can result in really bad acne - deep down in the dermis like cystic acne. My experience is in dogs - not people- but you have some similarities. In dogs, once their immune system recovers, they can fight off the mite overgrowth and then things die down and go back to normal.

Not saying you sound like my dogs, but.. you have two incidences of extreme physical stress and cystic acne, and since your immune system gets jacked with the Accutane, when you get off the Accutane you have no means to fend off the mites and so now huge mite population explosion.

You might try Ted's mange remedy. Its cheap, so certainly worth a shot.

I mix this up by the gallon when I have a mangy dog, and this is what I do:

Take 1 [16 oz] brown bottle of hydrogen peroxide from the grocery store - this is a 3% solution.

Take 1 gallon of distilled water.

Take 1 box of Borax laundry booster, no fragrances, from the laundry aisle from the grocery store - this is way more than you need so plan on trying it on your laundry.

You will also need an empty gallon jug.

Take the brown bottle of 3% hydrogen peroxide and dump it into the empty gallon jug.

Next fill the empty brown bottle up with distilled water and dump it into the jug with the peroxide - do this twice [so add 32 oz of distilled water]. What you now have is 48 oz of a 1% solution of hydrogen peroxide.

Then - add 1 cup of the borax to the jug of hydrogen peroxide. Shake the dickens out of it. The solution *should* be grainy. If all the borax crystals dissolve, add more - until the crystals STOP dissolving [this is called a 'saturated' solution].

Now the fun part..

Try soaking in this solution. For example - take a wash cloth and get it sopping wet with the solution and lay with that on your back for half an hour, switching it out and getting it soaking wet again every 10 minutes or so. The idea is to sit with the working solution on you for at least half an hour, and then allow the area to air dry - do not towel dry.

I do not know how long the active solution will stay in the jug once it is all mixed up; with a tight lid it may last a few days. I usually use it all in one bath, and so mix up fresh each time.

Try this - you should either feel relief rather immediately, or no difference - in which case you can rule out demodex."

01/07/2014: Karen from Cambridge, Mass replies: "Hi, I am sorry you are going through this. Sounds to me like it's a problem in your blood. Look up the spice turmeric as it is the best skin purifier. I would take a quarter to a half teaspoon of turmeric in a glass of warm water twice a day until your skin clears up. You can also find turmeric capsules if you can't tolerate the taste. Make sure you drink a lot of good purified water. I would also focus on looking at and cleaning up your diet and very importantly, eliminating foods baked in oil like tortilla chips, etc. I've found that certain types of chocolate candy bars (usually the cheap ones) cause cystic acne almost immediately. I think it might be the cocoa butter ingredient that causes congestion in the liver. Nuts can also cause cystic acne. Also a liver cleanse might be helpful."

04/21/2012: Jennifer from Sunrise, Fl replies: "Sandeep, acne near the chin is primarily hormonal, usually due to an excess of androgen hormones in the body. (If you are female, excess androgen can cause an excess of facial hair as well). The key here is to bring the hormones into balance. Drinking spearmint tea regularly might be beneficial for your acne. It helps lower the amount of androgen hormones in the body and has been shown to reduce chin acne, oiliness of the skin and excess body hair. It also soothes the stomach and aids digestion. However, as a caution, it may also lower sex drive as well. Best of luck to you."

My face is hideous. I find that alot of people just stare at me. I have alot of important things coming up and I would like to look nice for them. I am currently using proactiv which seems to control it somewhat but these cystic attackers are everywhere. They are so painful they keep me up at night. I need something to get rid of these things but also something to make my skin nicer. I would appreciate any help. Thanks!!"

06/06/2011: Debbie from Melbourne, Australia replies: "Bryce, go out and buy some 100% Tea Tree Oil and put a couple of drops on the affected area. You can use it undiluted but you don't need much at all. It will kill the bacteria both on the skin and the ones coming up. Let me know how it works out for you. It will stop them in their tracks."
06/06/2011: Carly from Seattle, Wa - Usa replies: "I agree with Debbie - but also -

look up "tumeric" on this site, and read, read, read... It is amazing for this type of thing. It is not expensive, and you can find it on the spices isle at your local grocery store. I bought a $5.00 jar that has lasted 5-6 months.

Being your age and having your skin rebel on you... Well, my heart goes out. It WILL get better. Hang in there."

06/07/2011: Debbie from Melbourne, Australia replies: "Yes Tumeric is excellent as well.

Also look at your diet. They say that all health begins in the gut. Good digestion is key. If your digestion is bad your body will be toxic and the toxins come out via the skin. Processed foods/ drinks like coke are bad for you. At your age too much alcohol could make your body too acidic causing skin breakouts.

Taking ACV every day would also be beneficial. 1-2 tablespoons in a glass of water with raw honey per day.

A great book to read is Nourishing Traditions."

[YEA]  06/22/2011: Tara from Mumbai, India replies: "Hi Bryce. I too suffered terribly from cystic acne and as I've described in my post above, conventional medicine just made things worse. Homeopathy really helped me - read up on the remedies Calcarea Sulph and Hepar Sulph, as well as the proper way of taking homeopathic remedies (start with a low potency such as 6x or 6c four pills/drops thrice a day; no food/drink/mints etc half hour before and after; stop remedy when you notice improvement and start if/when relapse occurs, etc). If you have had the ailment for a long period of time, then homeopathy might take some time to cure you, though you should see some improvement immediately with the correct remedy.

Or better still, find a good homeopathic doctor, since remedies can vary for some constitutions. Homeopathy also helps me for almost all other ailments and best of all - has no side effects.

What actually stopped the acne completely is a very high fibre (all natural) diet (steamed okra for lunch and dinner! ) - I guess it all had to do with some toxins in the gastrointestinal system which the okra is washing away. I have also pretty much cut out all processed packaged unnatural calorie-dense foods from my diet. Hope this helps you."

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  08/26/2011: Briana from Cumming, Ga, Usa replies: "A few years ago I started getting severe cystic acne and I've tried everything in the book to stop it, including doctors prescriptions, and proactiv. Nothing works for me. A few days ago I had HUGE swelling on my face from one of the cystic acne spots and I got concerned so I cleaned it with my daily face wash. I use clean & clear. Then I dabbed hydrogen peroxide on every pimple on my face, and then put neosporin on them.

In the past 2 days I have done those 3 steps when I get up in the morning and at night before I go to bed and my face is better than it has been in a long time. I'm not sure if it is going to continuously work, but I'm guessing if you do those things when acne first starts to show up, it should keep your face pretty clear."

03/06/2012: J from Rockford, Il replies: "I just want to thank whoever discovered this. I'm 28, I've had cystic acne for 2 years. Acne concentrated on the chin and jaw line are almost always hormone related. BC pills such as Yaz, Yazmin and Saffryal contain the equivalent of 25 mg of spironolactone. I take 100 mg of spironolactone plus Saffryal. BC pills alone, with spironolactone equivalents may work for some. Spironolactone is a prescription, Saw Palmetto is an herbal equivalent to spironolactone."

I had cystic acne on my chin . I read it was hormonal so I set up an appointment with a bioidentical hormone replacement specialist, but meanwhile. I tried turmeric, but it stopped working after the second week. I tried ACV and it did not work . So, I did tons of research. Which resulted in me taking daily does of 1000 IU of Vitamin E ( which I believe began to erase my brown age spots)1250 IU's of Vitamin A and 500 IU's of Pantothenic acid, also known as vitamin B5, niacinamide and zinc. I have since decreased the IU's since my acne began to subside. Please be careful when taking high doses of IU's..do your research or talk to your ND/MD. My acne began to decrease rapidly.

I began having weekly acupuncture and gave them a brief on my history. Prior to my cystic outbreaks I had been on antibiotics for about for 50 days. So they assumed my flora in my intestines had been destroyed. I was put on some great probiotics (that are kept in the fridge) I also started eating a couple tablespoons of natural yogurt in the am and pm. They also recommended vitamin C to rebuid the matrix of the foundation of the skin .

So now it the acne decreased by it 95%. Now when one appears I use tea tree oil on it with a cotton ball, which decrease the size by 90% within a couple hours and my the next day with reapplication every 5 hours it disappears in two days. I also began taking Udo's oil and it helped repair my skin ( Udo's oil 3-6-9 blend) I believe it is the fountain of youth. I realize everyone is not the same, but this method has been highly successful for me."

Thank you to whom ever suggested that, my cyst was a quarter of the original size within 2 hours. By the next day completely dried out. Just be sure to use a small dab, to prevent over drying. 01/10/2010: Mcneillmama3 from Asheboro, Nc replies: "I too have been battling acne cysts and boils for the past 9 years, since I started going through menopause.

Last week I thought I would try some OTC exfoliator because it was on sale. BIG mistake. The next day I had 7 new, very painful acne cysts. I went right back to the paste I concocted of Turmeric, colloidal oatmeal, sea salt, a little warm water, and a few drops of tea tree oil. I have been applying that paste, letting it dry, and then washing it off with Tea Tree Oil soap and they cysts have about self peeled after about three days. I have also started taking a turmeric capsule by mouth every day as well.'

Does anyone know how to make a paste out of turmeric, colloidal oatmeal and milk to get rid of menopausal peach fuzz. The tiny hairs on my face are the culprits for the cysts and blemishes. I believe if I could get rid of the hair, I could elminate the bacteria that are trapped around the hair follicles."
10/29/2010: Tj from Bull City, Nc replies: "You are right. The glands at the base of the hair produce sebum, thus acne sometimes. A remedy that is not only great for menopause but also cystic acne is Spearmint leaf tea. It lowers testoserone naturally. When you go through menopause, the estrogen that normally keeps testosterone in check is lowered. Try it. 2-5 cups a day, I use organic leaf. It will help manage the hair and likely help some of your other syptoms. Plus its safe and delicious."

I applied it on the area (my inner thighs) with just a small dot of the oil, and it caused large red welts to appear just a few hours later. I'm not allergic to it, so that wasn't the cause, and I'm not sure what was."

Turmeric Cure for Cystic Acne

Home Remedy Ingredients

  • Turmeric - 1 Teaspoon
  • Black Pepper - Dash (1/8th Teaspoon)

Add a teaspoon of the spice turmeric to a small glass of milk (almond or rice will do as well as dairy), add honey if you like, and drink twice a day to clear up cystic acne almost overnight! A small dash of black pepper added to any turmeric remedy increases its effectiveness.

01/10/2013: Sue M. from Worden, Il, Usa: "I'm gonna throw about 3 things out there for you. Do the research on neem, turmeric and oil of oregano.

In my reading, all three have huge value and help with skin ailments.... Both internal and external. The neem is suppose to be on the same level as the oil of oregano as far as doing the "anti-" work and the turmeric is for me, BIG. I had a cyst in my right armpit and I thought it was an ingrown hair. It wasn't.... There was no soreness and nothing would come out. At my yearly physical, the Dr. dismissed it and said it was nothing to be concerned about. That's when I decided to try a turmeric paste. I mixed a very small batch of turmeric with virgin coconut oil (the oil keeps the turmeric from drying out), put it on a bandaid and put the bandaid on my armpit and left on overnight. I did this for 2 nights. The following morning, I was able to extract 2 hard white( the size of a click pen) pcs. From that cyst. The excess fluid came with it and it has healed beautifully.

I would see which one of these may click with you. The oil of oregano is wonderful to dab on externally. The oregano never lets my cold sores grow or get that healing scab... Just kinda zaps them. I hope this helps..."

01/10/2013: Sarah from Nashville, Tn replies: "Sue, thank you so much for your advice! I did my research, and I just placed an order for some tumeric powder and oil of oregano. I am so excited for it to get here so I can try it! I just used some ACV on my cysts about 30 minutes ago, and my face does seem a bit calmer, although still red. And I have been eating these a------e tablets all day. I will report back on what happens. (fingers crossed) :)"
01/11/2013: Sue M. from Worden, Il, Usa replies: "Sarah... The turmeric may have a staining effect on your skin. Mine didn't stain too badly with the coconut oil mixture. It will wash off and you can also use a diluted ACV for rest of staining. I take 4 capsules a day internally.... Mainly for inflammation, but I know it does help with the skin, also. The oil of oregano, (if you take internally... I do 2 to 3 drops under tongue for about 10 to 15 seconds, then drink full glass of water) I don't take everyday, as it can deplete your iron levels. Just have to pay attention to what your body says.

I have never considered my complexion as "glowing, or beautiful, etc" and have come to the conclusion that it is gut related. So, I am concentrating on that. I take a 30 billion probotic and also Kombucha capsule (raw) 2 capsules twice a day. This protocol has only been the past month or so, but so far I think I'm on the right track. You may consider checking into that, too. Keep me posted... I hope I've helped."

[YEA]  12/18/2009: Ejstewart73 from Las Vegas, Nv, USA: "YEA for Turmeric!

I suffered for years with cystic acne/boils due to monthly hormonal changes, and was placed on oral contraception, antibiotics and topical retinoids to mitigate the problem, with little success. Now that I am trying to conceive, I'm unable to take these prescribed medications (and I'm also tired of the cost).

I came across this website looking for natural cures for many ailments yesterday. I ran to the store to buy Turmeric as soon as I read these testimonials, because I HAD two huge, throbbing cysts on my face, and another one that was in the beginning stages (red bump, itchy). After ONE DOSE, I am already noticing a huge difference. I took the following last night around 8pm:

1 tsp Turmeric
1 tsp Honey (to taste)
1/4 tsp Cinnamon
1 c Hot Water
2-3 tbsp milk (to taste)

The taste reminds me of Chai so it doesn't bother me at all.

I also applied a hot compress for about 10 minutes to the worst one before I went to bed, and applied antibiotic cream.

I woke up this morning, took a shower and the worst two boils had come to heads. Once the pus drained, they were still somewhat red, but completely flat and no more pain and throbbing. The other one that was forming is reduced in size and redness completely gone!

Thanks to EarthClinic.com and all readers for their suggestions and feedback. I look forward to trying other remedies including those using ACV."

10/01/2010: Candy from St. George, Kansas, Usa replies: "My question about Turmeric is can it affect you in any way when trying to conceive? I was on birth control for 12 yrs and quit about 1 1/2yrs ago to try to conceive. In the process of my hormone fluctution I have developed Cystic Acne which is so painful and emotionally draining. I use ACV orally & topically but also wanted to try the Turmeric. I know that it is not recommended while pregnant but wasn't sure about when attempting to conceive. Any help would be great, thanks so much!"

[YEA]  08/22/2008: J from Redlands, California USA: "About a month ago i came across this site. for the last 25 years i have had cystic acne probably genitic...I also suffered from boils around the nose. possibly MRSA or a staph infection! Anyways i read the forum and decided to apply some of the treatments. I first tried turmeric capsules and most recently turmeric powder with milk. I think the simple powder with milk is more effective...I also mixed a few drops of tea tree oil in vaseline and applied it to my nostrils with a cotton swab. At this point i still get the acne but the inflammation that goes along with the acne...has been reduced dramaticaly...thank you so much for providing this information!!!!"

[YEA]  07/11/2008: Jennifer from Covington, LA: "Turmeric and Cystic Acne: I have been battling acne since I was about 26, I am turning 40 this year. I have seen the doctor and taken his useless antibotics, clearly they didn't work. I realized that artifical sweetners caused major breakouts and have completely stopped using them. This has helped a lot but not completely. After reading how many things Tumeric was great for, I added this to my supplements. I noticed in just one day how much the breakouts I had were clearing up. I take 1200 mg a day in capsule form. The flair ups are not as bad and go away much quicker, in just a day or two. Usually they start to form and clear up before completely breaking out. Not to mention how great I feel, no more body aches!!"

[YEA]  04/17/2008: Stephanie from Rancho Cucamonga, CA: "Turmeric for Cystic Acne. I have had cystic acne on my face for years and have spent thousands of dollars on acne medicine that doesn't work. I finally came upon Turmeric and so far, so good. I apply it to my acne as a paste. I mix Turmeric spice and unrefined sesame oil till it makes a paste. I have been leaving it on for an hour or more a day for the last 3 days. I immediately noticed that the acne comes to the surface and begins to drain and has reduced in size considerably. I am only on day three and had about 7-8 fairly large cystic acne on my face. It is clearing nicely and I will update as to the finished results. Turmeric does turn everything yellow, including your skin. The yellowing of the skin will go away with washing. However, traces of turmeric will be left on your face and will stain pillowcases, sheets, clothing, sinks, and countertops."

[YEA]  06/21/2007: Julia from Lac du Flambeau, WI: "I have suffered off and on for several years with cystic acne, mostly tried antibiotics, products with salycic acid, my son who now 15 also gets the same type of acne as my sister and even my mother did. she used to get cortisone shots injected in the 70's. I got on internet last night and saw massive responses to turmeric, and ran out to store and drank my first glass, which was disgusting. Hold your nose, chug it down, and chase with juice or pop. I put neosporin on the 3 on my face, and this morning swelling is down by 50%, and pain is gone. the disgusting taste is worth it trust me. I am amazed that something this inexpensive works so well, do doctors know? they must, but don't get money for advising patients to use something that only costs a couple dollars at a grocery store. My son is going to try today."

[YEA]  12/22/2011: Misha from Indianapolis, In replies: "Thank God for this site! I recently developed really bad cystic acne. I started to feel like Quasimodo or the Phantom of the Opera. My self-confidence was really low and I hated having to go out in public. I was dreading the thought of having to go to a dermotologist for expensive treatments or painful procedures that might not even work. So, I googled "cystic acne homepathy" and this site came up.

I read all of the raves about Turmeric, so I stopped at the store a few days ago and bought Turmeric capsules. I took 3 capsules before I went to bed and the next morning my cystic acne had healed at least 70%. I kept taking them (about 6 a day) and one cyst that I've had FOR MONTHS has flattened completely and other cysts are about 80-90% healed.

I tried facials, acne wash/creams, warm compresses, draining, and Turmeric is the only thing that has worked. I've also started putting Apple Cider Vinegar on the cysts and that seems to dry up the oozing.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions! I can't even tell you how much it's changed my life."

[YEA]  12/23/2011: Crystal from Salyersvile, Ky replies: "I cannot say enough about turmeric!!! It is the best stuff for any kind of skin conditions.. I had a lot of skin tags coming on and had started taking the turmeric for cystic acne and rosacea... And to my surprise the skin tags are barely feelable now.. And I only take one per day.. I have my aunts taking it for different skin ailments and its also working for them!!"
11/12/2012: Dc-girl from Sarasota, Fl replies: "Misha, Can you please tell me how many mg of turmeric those capsule you are take are? I would like to take straight turmeric itself but I don't know how much the equivilent dosage would be in the powder form of the spice itself. Or if anyone else knows please let me know, thanks so much!"

Urine Therapy

[YEA]  01/16/2012: Anonymous from Vancouver, Bc: "Before you ignore this you might want to try it if nothing else worked.. I have used this many times and it works quickly.. use a Qtip to catch a bit of your urine, dab it on your new pimple (or old) you may have to repeat this several times but you will notice almost a complete reduction on the first day! (research urine therapy if you think this is way out there. ) - wash your hands well as it gives less of a chance of you giving yourself pink eye on this delicate matter."

[YEA]  05/03/2009: HoraceGrant from Atlanta, GA: "Urine to cure cystic acne. I just want to say urine really does work. In the past I have had to have my dermatologist give me cortisone shots directly into the nodule. This is extremely effective but becomes a hassle and pricey. I have to say urine on a cotton swab has essentially the same results. I recommend taking a swab of your first urine in the morning and hold it with some light pressure for about a minute.

Thanks earth clinic"

[YEA]  05/12/2007: Jennifer from Lansing, IL: "Urine really works for acne. I get really deep or cystic acne. The kind you can't pop and if you do it just gets worse and leaves a scar. After reading about using it for acne on this website, I just had to try it for myself. I peed on a cotton swab when I woke up and held it for a minute or so on the pimple. After just a few minutes it seemed to have brought the pimple to a head. The next day I did it again and now it's almost gone. This will be the way I handle my cystic pimple from now on. Try it and see!"

[YEA]  02/26/2007: Jess from Johnson City, TN: "I have suffered from severe cystic acne, the most severe, painful, and deepest of acne for at least 13 years (since puberty). I've tried everything. Nothing topical worked because the acne was so deep. I finally found the cure! A form of vitamin B5, pantothenic acid, in extremely high doses cured my acne completely! I have been taking 10g of pantothenic acid a day for almost a month. Within a week I could see huge results and within two weeks I was completely clear. I'm so glad I decided to try this instead of trying Accutane like the rest of my family. If you decide to try this build up to 10g/day over the course of a week (if not, it can cause stomach upset) and continue the 10g/day regimen for 2 months. After that you can gradually decrease the dosage down to a maintenance dose of 1-2g/day. This information is supported by a study done by Dr.Leung in China. The initial 10g/day dosage is extreme-the pills mostly come in 500mg doses which ends up being 20 pills/day but if you're desperate like me then it's worth it. I split mine up into 2 doses/day and dissolve the pills in a drink. It doesn't taste good but its better than having to take so many pills. I've read that smaller doses work but it may take longer to see results."

[YEA]  01/11/2007: Erin from Seattle, WA: "I'm really surprised this hasn't been posted, but the real remedy to acne or cystic acne is your own urine! Soak a cotton ball (first morning pee is best)hold it on the pimple, repeat every time you urinate, the pimple will go away. Contrary to popular belief, human urine is sterile and contains your own wasted antibodies. Don't knock it until you try it, it really works!"

03/06/2011: Starofafrika from Atlanta, Ga replies: "My mama said that when I was a baby she used to wipe my face with my urine because women from an older generation said that this would make your skin pretty.

I just developed a case of stubborn cystic acne over the past couple of weeks. I have gotten it subside greatly but not completely. I will try this first thing in the morning.

Thanks for the tip. I will be sure to let my mama know that this wasn't just an old wives tale."

Vitamin B

05/24/2012: Ashley from Vancouver, Bc: "For the past month I have had terrible trouble with Cystic acne. The type that is painful, then itchy, then becomes a large hard red bump, then will become squishy and filled with puss that is "popable" but will leave a nasty red mark for a week (if you're like me and pop it). I was on minocycline in the past but do not have the money to buy such medication and was really looking for something that was a more natural remedy. I tried all the natural topical treatments, such as Apple cider vinegar, turmeric, regular astringent, and clearasile benzile peroxide ointment.

I knew I needed something internal to do the trick, so I started taking vitamin B5 (Pantothenic acid) its actually a vitamin that breaks down fat, carbs and protein and also helps with acne. I've been taking it for 2 weeks now and all my previous cysts have gone away and all the ones that I could feel under this skin are starting to get smaller! I'm so happy! I also started taking Zinc which is very similar to B5! I did take some A____ but I didn't get "instant" results like some did, then again the vitamins need sometime to kick in and have your body get used to them. If you have acne like mine I would 100% suggest an internal medication such as these vitamins! They work wonders, are natural ( I found mine in the organic section of superstore) and help keep a healthy body! Hope this helps!!"

[BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS]  03/19/2014: Queen from North Carolina replies: "Be very careful with using B5. Its been a year now and although my face cleared up, I've lost all my hair in the top of my head. I noticed a few months into taking the B5 that my hair was thinning but didn't put two and two together. It wasn't until it got really bad that I decided to pull out my diary and see when it started. I remember before breaking down and taking it because my face looked horrible, I had read about a woman who suffered major hair loss from this supplement. I wish I would've listened because now my hair is falling out at an alarming rate. There are tons of stories about similar experiences with this vitamin. Can someone help me please? And only herbs and while foods, I am done with supplements!!!"
03/19/2014: Mike62 from Denver replies: "Queen: The 80/10/10ers enjoy good success with their complete raw whole food program. The program was begun by Dr. Doug Graham, PHD. life sciences, nutritionist to Martina Navratilova. For immediate relief you can give your hair a buzz cut. Air and sunshine are good. You can apply some Jamaican black castor oil, expeller pressed coconut oil, cold pressed rose hip seed and carrot seed oils."

Vitamin C (Commercial)

11/14/2012: A.i. from Kansas City, Kansas, Usa: "Sorry, but not everyone can take A____ unfortunately. My own stomach, for instance, is particularly sensitive to products with high amounts of zinc. It's absolutely a horrible, frightening reaction.

There are, however, a lot of ingredients that can be taken that are in the A____, including zinc. If one knows what is causing a sensitivity in their systems, they can always get the ingredients separately (like the echanacea, or Vitamin A), or apply them topically to the cystic acne (like suggested with the zinc). Right now, I'm taking supplemental powder (with low zinc) and protein powder and mixing it with oat 'milk' (laying off of dairy until this heals). I'll be eating organic carrots, apples and papaya* (*for the enzymes) and drinking lots of lemon water to help alkaline my system and aid in the healing. Also, I'm taking Milk Thistle to further detoxify my system to prevent another one from popping up.

In a way, I'm kind of grateful that this happened, because it is making me think about eating a lot more fruits and vegetables drinking more water and eating less refined sugars, and avoiding saturated fats, and limiting dairy."

[BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS]  02/27/2012: Meg from Vancouver, BC: "I've been using 2 to 3 tablets a day for around 6 days. I have noticed one really big cyst has gone down quite a bit, but I don't think I'm having as remarkable results as others. It would probably help if I kept going with this regimen, but I'm concerned about the high vitamin intake long term. They seem to have lowered the vitamin A content, so that safe daily intake allows for 2. 5 tablets. So, less of a risk of vitamin A toxicity. However, each tablet contains around 1667% of daily recommended vitamin C. Probably not safe longterm. I'm wondering if the lowered vitamin A is why this isn't working that well for me. Most forms of acne are treated by dermatologists with vitamin A derivatives: effective for acne, but lots of side effects and yes, toxic, hence accutane. It may be that those who found this effective were simply ODing on vitamin A.

If you wanted to do that now with A____, it would mean also taking upwards of 4500% your daily vitamin C, and I know when I drink this, my body gets a bit saturated and starts to tell me it's had enough! I take a few sips and just want to stop. Either way, whatever you decide is a safe limit for you, you could just get vitamin A caps and it would be a lot cheaper."

[YEA]  05/14/2012: Lady From London from London, Uk replies: "Well, I read this and my monthly cystic acne on the chin was coming, and nothing else I tried worked (ACV topically and drinking a shot of it straight, lavender oil applied over a two week period, tea tree oil), so I decided to give this a go. Well, I'm dumbfounded that the one cystic acne spot I had developing on my chin has now all but died. It started yesterday, and was big and red and painful within hours of me waking up. I took a total of 4 or 5 (I lost count) tablets of A____ in the last 24 hours and it sorted it out. I still have the remnants of the bump, but it is no longer painful, red or growing. It feels normal again, and it lost it's voom! I noticed a small breakout of the cystic acne now on my shoulder, so I hope that A____ will sort that out too. Anyway... I'm pleased! So, thank you so much for recommending this!!!! Ever so grateful :)"
07/27/2012: Loren from Madison, Wi, Usa replies: "I just found a bottle of Very Berry A____ tablets in my cabinet! But the expiration date reads 05/12, is there a possibility this will not work, even being only 3 months "old"?

If not, I will certainly buy a new bottle, I really want to try this treatment, my chin cysts are ever persistent these past few weeks..."

[YEA]  02/07/2012: Esm from Philadelphia, Pa: "I want to say Thank You for the A____ suggestion. It worked right away!!!! I had cystic acne on my chin. I had one about 1 month ago and it took a few weeks to go away. I suddenly noticed a bump on my chin just like the cyst I got last time. I freaked out b/c these things hurt. Anyway I went and bought A____ in citrus flavor. I took it early morning on Saturday. I was taking 2 every 3-4 hours. I took them all day Saturday & @ the end of the day the disgusting painful bump was gone!!!! I am amazed @ how it worked!!! I am still taking A____ just a few a day & my face looks better. Thank you a million times. I'm 32 yrs old & I never suffered from cystic acne or acne. I just had some acne through the years, but nothing major. It was managed with OTC stuff."

01/04/2012: Averi from Pittsburgh, Pa: "Thank you!!! Everyone or all your information.. I am 44 years old and was told by my dermatologist that I have too much yeast in my body which is causing my acne and cysts. I have battled acne since my early teen years but I have never had bumps like these. it's horrible and makes you feel like a monster. I get them on along my chin and jaw bone on my back and chest. They itch and hurt like hell!!! I absolutely hate it!! But to read all of these comments helps me see that I am not alone in this battle and there is help. My dermatologist has me using ketokonizole cream and shampoo and I take a form of it orally... But nothing seems to help. I'm so desperate to clear this up that I will try anything. I will be going to the store today to by some A____ and ACV. I pray it works!!!!"

[YEA]  10/16/2008: Monica from South, Georgia: "I had a big problem with cystic acne. I tried every remedy on this site and nothing worked. I changed makeup, used prescription and otc products. I prayed and prayed and kept trying different products and foods, cleanses etc. Then someone in my office got sick with a cold so I started taking those grapefruit effervescent cold immunity tablets. I noticed I didnt get any new cysts on my face. So I increased the dosage and used selson blue as a facial wash to dry up the lesions already there. My answer to prayer had finally come. I just wanted to share this in case there is someone else out there who has tried everything it wont hurt to try one more thing. This could be the answer for you as well. The box dosage is 3 tablets a day but Im taking 4-6 a day. I hope this helps."

EC: WARNING: This is an Airborne product which contain sucralose (aka Splenda, an artificial sweetener)... not advised for those with the herpes virus! Read the ingredients here.

[YEA]  05/30/2009: Erin from Naperville, IL replies: "I have also found A____ to be extremely effective against cystic acne, but you have to start taking it as soon as you feel a bump coming on. I have taken all the flavors, not just the grapefruit, and had success, but I do think the grapefruit tastes the best. I take one fizzy tablet dissolved in water as soon as I feel a painful bump forming and I continue taking one every few hours until it goes away ... usually less than 24 hours. I have been doing this for several years and I swear by it. It's better than any treatment I ever got from my dermatologist!"
[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  01/09/2010: Ria from Piscataway, Nj, Usa replies: "I am 22 and my face recently started breaking out in cystic acne. I stopped using makeup, (MAC Cosmetics & Clinique) increased my water intake, exercised, drank ACV but nothing was working. Yesterday I was browsing around the house and happened to find some of these tablets. That night I did my regular routine (washed with African black soap for a minute) and then took ONE pill. Afterwards I wiped my face with lemon and ACV. I woke up this morning and my bumps have decreased DRAMATICALLY!! I definitely recommend. Today i'm going to buy some Pantothenic Acid Pills and see how they work! Thank you for this advice!!"
03/10/2011: Sjc from Philadelphia, Pa replies: "Thank you all so much for this advise. I'm 42 years old and to have to live with skin that breaks out more than my 14 year old daughter is extremely embarrassing. I too have tried everything but nothing works for long. Now I'm feeling very confident about trying this remedy. Thank you so, so much."
[YEA]  05/15/2011: Jacqueline from Cream Ridge, Nj Us replies: "I am 41 and I have had cystic acne for about 11 years now and I have tried everything and could not get rid of it. I read this blog and decided to try the Orange flavored A____. I take one a day and in about 2 1/2 weeks my face is clear and I haven't had any new breakouts! I am so happy!"
08/04/2011: Emipol from Montreal, Quebec, Canada replies: "I'm 15. Every once in a while, I get this huge pimple on my chin, on top of the acne that I already have. It's under the skin and it hurts alot. It's really embarassing and it does nothing for my self-esteem. I'll try your remedy and hope for the best. ;)"
[YEA]  08/04/2011: Sara from Newport Beach, Ca replies: "have you guys tried garlic?? eat a whole clove or as many as you can handle, apologize to those you love... While these remedies worked a bit to relieve the length of time a cysts remained on my face - bottom line I was STILL breaking out and developing new cycts weekly if not daily. I visited an accupuncturist - she did a simple test on me manuvering my arms and head this way & that, etc... She told me I had parasites. We all carry them, she told me. I was shocked! OMG I bought the zz ointment after 8 weeks I have NO NEW CYSTS developing and only very small pimples on occasion. It got WORSE before it got better, which was really hard to take, but stay with it!

My face is getting back its normal color - amazing!"

04/22/2013: All Natugal from West Palm Beach, Fl, Usa replies: "What is A___? Accutane? I've started getting about 1 cystic visitor every month and it's the worst problem I've ever had. I am 28 and never had these growing up. I think it is related to me being on the pill for 10 years. Today I ingested Vitamin C, Zinc 50, liquid turmeric, women's multivitamin, echinecea, liquid vitamin B12 and Apple Cider Vinegar. I applied a lemon, saw palmetto honey and apple cider vinegar in separate increments to the affected area. So far the honey drained it, the lemon subsided the swelling and pain and the ACV just dried it out. I then applied a Rx cream called Epiduo later in the day. If anyone here is a female in their 20's, never had kids, took or on the pill and gets few but re-occurring cysts on their chin area and has found a solution please let me know. Also please share what foods you have found to be targets for the problem. Is it coffee, peanuts, bread? Help!"
