7 Herbs Commonly Used to Treat Candida
If you're a candida sufferer, you know how difficult it can be to find a method to successfully control that common fungus once it begins to grow uncontrollably within your body. The myriad candida symptoms detract from your quality of life and create a variety of health challenges such as yeast infections, oral thrush, weakened immune systems, and dozens of others.
Many people have found herbal remedies are an effective, natural method to take control of candida albicans and eliminate frustrating symptoms. Here are seven herbs that successfully treat candida. Could they be the solution to your candida infection?
The University of Maryland reported that garlic, which contains sulfur compounds, has proven antifungal properties and advocated it as a treatment for candida. Garlic also acts as a natural antibiotic which, unlike traditional antibiotics, fights the harmful bacteria while promoting beneficial microbes.
Garlic can be added to your diet by either eating one or two cloves daily or it is available in pill form. It is suggested that when taking garlic pills you choose enteric-coated capsules, which protects the garlic until it reaches the intestinal tract where the majority of the candida yeast resides.
Berberine Containing Herbs
Berberine is found in a number of herbs, including barberry, goldenseal, and Oregon grape root. These herbs are staples of ancient Chinese medicines used for treating fungal, bacterial, and viral infections. Berberine stimulates the immune system and promotes the body's ability to protect against fungal infections.
It is noted that if you choose to obtain berberine by ingesting goldenseal, goldenseal can irritate the liver so should only be taken for two weeks, then omitted for seven days, then can be taken for another two weeks, etc.
A Georgetown University Medical Center study shows that oregano oil completely stops the growth of a candida infection. The same study states that "the daily oral administration of origanum oil may be highly effective in the prevention and treatment of candidiasis."
Carvacrol and thymol, both natural antimicrobial agents found in oregano, are believed to react with water in the bloodstream to dehydrate and kill candida cells. One more study shows that carvacrol is more effective than 18 prescription drugs at eliminating harmful microbes.
It is recommended that 3-6 drops of oregano oil mixed with a glass of water or some coconut oil be taken twice daily for maximum effectiveness. It can also be taken in enteric capsules or applied directly to candida skin infections.
Cinnamon does more than just taste good: it's also an effective antifungal agent and it contains antibacterial and antiparasitic properties as well. It has been used for centuries to treat numerous maladies. Besides killing fungus, cinnamon is also known to relieve pain and cold and flu symptoms, suppress urinary tract infections, increase insulin efficiency, and calm upset stomachs.
To treat candida it is recommended that you drink a tea made of half a teaspoon of cinnamon and boiling water or you may substitute 3-4 drops of cinnamon essential oil. This should be consumed daily.
Pau d'Arco comes from the bark of the tree with the same name. It is well known for its antifungal properties and its ability to halt the growth of candida albicans. It also has a mild laxative effect which helps the body eliminate toxic elements. Pau d'Arco contains a compound called lapachol that is an especially potent antifungal agent. Drinking a cup of Pau d'Arco tea each day could help you free yourself from candida overgrowth.
Echinacea is a common flowering plant that has nine species; you may know it as Black-Eyed Susan or the purple coneflower. In addition to being used as a popular remedy for colds and flu, echinacea is believed to boost the immune system, promoting the production of white blood cells, which helps restrict the growth of candida albicans.
Echinacea is available in capsules, liquids, or may be made into teas. This is another herb that the body needs the occasional break from so after taking it for a month, don't use echinacea for a week. After seven days you may resume your echinacea routine.
This is an herb widely used in Ayurvedic medicine. It is a potent antifungal agent and demonstrates antibacterial properties. It is also an effective immune booster and powerful detoxifier. A dose of 20-40 drops of neem in water or juice 2-3 times a day is recommended for treating candida. Neem may also be applied directly to skin to treat psoriasis, athlete's foot, and other issues.
Mother nature has gifted humanity with a vast collection of herbs to treat a variety of afflictions, including the harmful effects of candida. It is recommended that you talk to your health care provider before starting any herbal treatment and many herbal remedies are not recommended for women who are pregnant or nursing. For many people, however, herbs are the secret to living a candida free life.
[YEA] 02/11/2008: stephen from wichita, kansas: "Garlic is and has been a miracle cure for a entire host of ailments. Candida, which causes a condition known as candida albacons is caused by the continued use of underarm deoderants, toothpaste, mouth washes, many prescription medications and the list goes on. There are enzymes in the body and its blood supply and organs. The use of the above mentioned products kills the enzyme that would otherwise be present to devour yeast in the body. When this happens, the yeast will over produce and is linked to over 98% of all known cancers (Meaning 100% of all known naturally occurring cancers). The enzymes found in raw garlic replaces the body's naturally occurring enzymes and takes on the role of instantly killing the yeast. When this happens, the bloat in your body will then shrink, you will breath much better, your kidneys will love you for garlic consumption. Your liver gets along with garlic very well as does the heart. Mixing cayenne pepper with the consumption of raw garlic helps to dialate blood vessels all throughout your body. This combination is extremely effective for impotence. I have learned this information from trial and error and have it down now as a proven fact. ENJOY GODS gift of Garlic."Replies
[YEA] 12/23/2008: Rich from Boca Raton, FL replies: "Garlic (which has selenium and sulfer) seems to work great.
I'm trying to hit this with a lot of stuff at once. Here is what I am trying, and why.
Garlic - Selenium and Sulfer is a dandruff cure(anti-fungal)
Niacinamide - ted says it is toxic to candida. It is water soluble
Borax - cured a twitchy eye (blepharitis) (3x per week)
Vitamin C(Ascorbate) - 6000 mg, a healthy immune system can better fight candida
ACV - cured my fingers (also appears in tropicana anti-oxidant advantage juice)
Some websites seem to say to avoid Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, because it can cause canker sores. Sulfer is an antifungal... I think the Sulfate kills the candida, and then you have a hole in your mouth. I'd rather have a canker sore that Vitamin C will cure, rather than candida.
Others recommend avoiding milk. Milk Contains Lactoferrin-B which kills Candida.
Here is an article discussing Lactoferrin peptides:
It is somewhat interesting that the medical community calls Acetate and Garlic Anti-oxidents. That may be true, but they are also anti-fungals.
I haven't tried iodine yet, will try soon. That being said, the vitamin c megadose(along with some of the other stuff) seems to be working great.
In fact, after adding the garlic, I've had an "age spot", or "genetic skin lesion" disappear. Silly Dermatologists."
[YEA] 01/23/2009: Rich from Boca Raton, Fl replies: "Update: The Garlic pills worked great. It Basically cured in 2 weeks! I'm sure fresh garlic is great too. It's the sulfur compounds that perform the miracle, so an "odorless garlic", or a pill with low sulfur is no good. The more odor, the better :) Note: Garlic has Selenium as well.
For two weeks, I used a 1500mg (500:1 concentrate), so really 3 mg of Sulfur. I took a pill every 3 hours until I felt pain (Kidney, liver, intestines), and then stopped for the day. Woke up and the pain was gone, started again.
Got some cloudy urine, some diarrhea (that looked like it had yeast in it), some bad gas pains. The pain that I mentioned... one day it was the kidney, next day it was the liver, then upper intestines, then lower intestines. Eventually hit the colon. Still taking the Niacinamide (with flush), and Vitamin C. Halted the Borax, and don't take the ACV regularly. Added some liquid-kelp (I've heard good things about iodoral for Candida problems). Added some lysine (to promote collagen and healing). Added some zinc.
With any antifungal regimen, extra water is a good idea. Divided doses are a good idea as well, so the fungus doesn't grow back inbetween doses. I change to a new garlic pill, Schiff Super Garlic (16 mg of Allyl Sulfides), looks like a good pill.
Note: there is a "die-off" effect with the mega-garlic, which is easily nutrilized within a couple hours with Ascorbate.
I feel like a million bucks, so good I was able to resume a few beers per week with no side effects. Note: I wouldn't recommend this, though."
03/21/2009: Rich from Boca Raton, Fl replies: "Here is a neat new study on various oils and candidacidal activity. These seem to work on Fluconazole resistant strands. Itraconazole seems like a good drug for candida if you want a drug. Otherwise, maybe its time to get out the Gin (Juniper oil) or Peppermint Schnapps (Peppermint Oil); seems like a more fun way to go.

10/14/2009: Lisa from Coto De Caza, Ca replies: "In reply to stephan about Garlic and candida.
Candida is NOT caused by underarm deodorants, toothpaste, or mouthwashes. One of the main causes is Antibiotics which kills the friendly bacteria and lets yeast grow too much. Another is bad eating. Also, its NOT linked to all cancers. Although many people get candida when they get cancer. Saying candida causes cancer is like saying Firemen cause fires, since they are always there when a fire happens too."

Garlic and Cayenne
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand: "Briefly the cure for candida that I found to be most effective seems to be a large amounts of garlic extract taken 3-4 times a day. Along with fresh cayenne peppers. Some apple cider vinegar will reduce the side effect. Taking some amounts of unsugared yogurt (homemade) seems to do the job. It is important to avoid taking all forms of vegetable oils, white flour, and white bread. Some research claims oregano oil taken is most effective against candida and other fungus like conditions. The problem is most people can't stand the hot taste of the oregano. Perhaps a milder form the herbal oregano might be more easy on the stomach"
Ted from Bangkok,Thailand: "I need to explain little basics of candida albicans, or yeast infections. There are three strategies in killing off the yeast.
Firstly, yeast is found naturally in the body, but it has grown too much due to certain conditions which causes the yeast to grow. Therefore we have to deprive the food sources of yeast. the most obvious food source of yeast is sugar, wheat, flour and a major food source for yeast actually comes from soft drinks. Undigested food due to lack of Hydrochloric acid in the stomach makes intestinal yeast an absolute playground to play havoc to the body. The taking of foods high in digestive enzymes such as hydrochloric acid, enzymes from fresh fruits and vegetables is known to work.
Secondly is people with yeast infection frequently have leaky gut syndrome. I actually found a cure for leaky gut syndrome which was to dissolve magnesium chloride about 500 mg. into a 1/3 glass of water and drink it. Continue taking it for the rest of the day to 1500 mg. In case the problems still persists, add one teaspoon of fresh frozen royal jelly (natural bee products). In case of a autoimmune develops over this candida problems a possible cure is sodium perborate (about 500 mg.) mixed in about 1/2 glass of water and drink that. Apple cider vinegar works quite well via the destruction of fungus, but must be taken in liberal amounts, although dietary restriction of sugar and wheat (gluten allergy) is needed.
Toxins from candida albicans is acetaldehyde which our body can metabolize in safer form with taking of molybdenum supplements, eg. about 300-500 mcg.
Electrication using 464 hz at alternating current from computer's pc is another possibility shown to be workable cures also."
10/16/2013: Livia from Maryland: "Yeast or something else?
Hello, I've been reading lots about candida here in the last few months. I've started the lemon/Baking Soda alkalizing protocol and took borax for a while now I've moved on to Methylene Blue 0.1%. Some days I take H2O2, others ACV and BS as well as magnesium chloride, potassium citrate, milk thistle, D3, Fish oils, and sodium ascorbate.
I have had yeast for almost a year. It started with a UTI that I couldn't get rid of, I discovered D-mannose which dealt with that problem eventually (months), but the useless antibiotics left me with thrush, which led to an internal yeast infection. I've changed my diet hugely over the last year, but still have moments of stress where I reach for the sugar. Then I feel awful again. I've been battling depression and brain fog on and off. Pain in my vulva and clitoris (from about my first yeast infection last year - never had it before then) that has never gone away. My tinnitus seems to be getting louder (that I've had for 15 years). I've also had eczema for 20 odd years. I do feel better without wheat or sugar but somehow it's connected to comfort and I reach for it at times of stress.
I've been eating cilantro and drinking green tea. My digestion is better that it has been for a long time, but I want this heavy feeling in my head to go away. I also have a heavy/hot feeling in my chest. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks."
10/14/2010: Elizabeth from Nashville, Tn: "I suspect I've recently had extremely itchy ears due systemic candida/ yeast/fungus. It was so bad I was digging in my ears and making them even more irritated. I have essential oils at home so I broke out the tea tree and oregano oil. Just dipped a q-tip in the tea tree oil and coated inside and outside of both ears (without getting it too deep in the canal AND using fresh q-tip for each ear). Next I applied oregano oil in the same manner, making sure not to get it too deep in the canal. Yes, the oregano oil does burn some but afterwards I have no itching. I've been doing this for the past day and half and will continue to do this for another couple days. Also plan on starting back up on ingesting oregano oil and grapefruit seed extract for internal fungus/yeast (making sure to supplement this with some good probiotics)."Replies
10/14/2010: Juliettesehee from Santa Fe, Nm, Usa replies: "Make SURE to dilute the oregano oil in a carrier oil such as olive, or sweet almond (or anything you have lying around the house) - the oil feels like it's burning because it IS burning! It is way too concentrated to use straight on the skin, and is just as effective when diluted properly. Oregano oil is one of the most powerful antibiotics there is, but must be treated with respect or you will injure the skin."
[YEA] 01/28/2006: Shae from Alexandria, VA: "Oregano Oil kills candida. Get high potency wild crafted oregano oil in capsules and take them orally. Also take baths with 8-10 drops of essential oil of oregano. This WILL CURE candida and you'll feel the effects immediately."
Oregano or Olive Leaf Extract
[YEA] 08/16/2008: Mylu from California, Missouri: "Oregano cap. or oil and olive leat extract will kill yeast and fungi. Inside and out. Google them."Replies

Xylitol is a naturally occurring sweetener primarily derived from plant sources and has many surprising benefits. Xylitol is not actually a sugar, it's a sugar alcohol. Other sugar alcohols include erythritol, maltitol and sorbitol. Unlike other sugars it has five, not six, carbon atoms. Classified as a low calorie (2.4 calories per gram), low carbohydrate natural sweetener, xylitol is considered beneficial for your teeth and completely safe for diabetics. It has no toxicity and has not been linked to any form of disease.
One surprising fact about xylitol is how readily available in nature it is; making it possible to extract from a variety of sources. It's found in fruits, berries, lettuce, and corn cobs.
Traditionally, xylitol was extracted from birch trees (Birch Sugar), however many manufacturers have switched to environmentally friendly corn cobs. This insures that the production of xylitol does not contribute to the deforestation of trees and maintains a low cost to the consumer.
Xylitol is as sweet as sugar, without the calories and can be substituted one for one in place of cane sugar. When substituting xylitol for sugar, add more liquid as xylitol doesn't caramelize and can tend to make some recipes drier.
History Of Xylitol
Xylitol was discovered in 1891 by a German chemist, but it wasn't until the sugar shortage in WWII that alternative sweeteners were considered. Xylitol was introduced to the United States in 1963 when the FDA officially approved it as a sweetener and it's been gaining in popularity ever since.
Xylitol rebalances the body's pH by creating an alkaline environment, which helps the body fight bacteria, viruses, and parasites that tend to grow in an acidic envrionment. Due to xylitol's high fiber content consuming more than 12 grams in one meal can yield a laxative effect to varying degrees.
visit this site for Xylitol (cheapest price I found)
EC: That's a great price for Xylitol! Just bought a small container of Xylitol at Whole Foods yesterday for about $8.00.
